He was always willing to help students understand the material. His tests were very fair. Great professor!
Didn't cover some key points in this subject at all. Grading policy is goofy, and he was never very helpfull. This experience is consistent with many other students I have spoken with.
Hollis was funny and interesting, but he lacked few things in defining key points for the tests. He didnt take late work, and didnt discuss questions often enough. Great interaction with the class, and pretty helpful.
He was super funny and great at teaching. Great at getting everyone involved and actually interested. If I were taking more math, it'd be with him.
his lessons were not very clear, and his way of grading homework is weird. we only had our homework graded a handful of times. he also always picked on me (a shy student) to do problems for the class, which made me very uncomfortable.
Though he never really checked our homework that after, I did enjoy his classes. He made math funny and easy, though I dont like his grading system.

Awesome class! Hollis is Da'MAN very clear and precise grading. Homework grading is different for sure bhut he is good at what he does. I wish he taught more subjects!!!!!!
His approach to teaching makes what they are learning real for the students, not something they may never use again. His grading system is a little different, but he is very approachable with any questions and wants all in the class to be successful. He made it fun...
He's a really cool teacher. He makes Geometry fun. I would recommend taking Geometry with him.
always willing to help
Great teacher for Geometry. Very helpful and entertaining. Always happy to help.
The greatest math teacher on planet earth! Actually makes math fun. He understands that students don't automatically like math or appreciate how cool it is. He doesn't just teach math, he explains it. Helps you get the point. Always ready to help.
Awesome teacher. Makes things interesting and has a great sense of humor!
Lower level students, Stay away! Never once enjoyed his class. He is a very arrogant person. He makes it obvious that he's just so much smarter than MTH60, and if you have trouble? go to the math desk! He makes it clear its a job, and he's not there to help you keep up on things. YES, he does pick on people, but if you thought it back, that's a NO!
Very Rude ! He is arrogant , and he picks on people! Not helpful. Basically introduces the concepts and expects you to learn it at the learning center. Also, no an encourager, doesn't care if you pass or fail.
He is good, he covers alot of material a little fast.
Boring class and he is always late in class. He doesn't care about the students. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS.
I took math 60/65 with Hollis. He is very through in his teaching but arrogant and often side tracks with the "peanut gallery" and jokes around too much. I found it very distracting at times... all in all I would say good teaching style, but needs to grow up.
Lots of fun to take a class from. Made math a lot more than just "numbers and stuff". He brought up practical uses for things we learned in class, and made me realize what I might actually need this stuff for.
Hollis is pretty good. He make the class enjoyable and he is funny, and explains math in relatable terms and is willing to explain further if you need more help. However, he takes forever to grade tests, and seems pretty arrogant. Disorganized and his grading system is all over the place. Overall, though, a decent teacher.
IF you want to have a good time and get a C in your math class then take Hollis. If you want a qualified teacher that won't waste your time then take someone else. He has no ability to be clear or do anything but subject his students to his inane sense of humor. Doesn't bother to put smart-board notes online. Not useful with his sloppy writing.
Hollis is awesome! He makes mathe fun and exciting, is hilarious, and is always willing to put aside time to help if you are struggling. He really attempts to make math understandable. I would recommend him for any math class.
This teacher is not a teacher. He is a child trapped inside a mans body. He is ice cold and does not care about his students. His scheduling does not set you up for success. If he does not get to the material in class you are expected to learn it on your own time. Which would be fine but half the time he is up to 15 minutes late.
When he is asked for help he will ask if you're in a group and if you say no he'll tell you get in one or go to the learning center. Minor use of the text book. Has his classes do group presentations which seems a little odd for a math class. If you're use to a structured math class and knowing where you stand don't take a class from him.
He's fun for sure, but help from him outside of class is non-existent. He was always willing to let me know my standing in the class and did offer some extra insight for me personally with test taking. The worst part really is the constant banter with the very people in the class that like to waste my time/money with stupid remarks and jokes.
Hollis is the worst teacher I have ever taken math from, he is late all the time, he takes forever to grade papers, tests and quizes. He is very inconsistent, lazy and disorganized. Yes he is funny but it is a waste of time. Go to his office hour just wanting answers and he looses you by skipping half the problem. This is a teach yourself instructor
Hollis tends to joke a lot, but that is what actually keeps me interested and coming to class. It's not like sitting through a mind-numbing lecture where you pay more attention to the clock rather than the teacher. He's willing to help you as long as you've put in the effort, come to class, do your homework, etc.
Hollis is a great teacher! What many people may see as arrogance I see as confidence in his ability to get you to learn the subject matter. Hollis frustrates the timid because he forces you to think and figure things out on your own with his guiding hand! Hollis is the MAN!
Hollis is the man. He's funny, good at explaining, and does a good job preparing you for tests. If you are scared of math, have a bad attitude, and think the best grade you're capable of in math is a C, then take someone else. If you believe you can do it, and want to do well, then take a class with him.
His class was great. I always got bad grades in every math class and he managed to get me to understand all of it and do well in the class. It was an entertaining class and not a drag to go to everyday. Overall he has a great attitude and seems to actually care whether his students understand what is going on or not.
Puts a lot of the problems into real world solutions. Keeps the class interested even when not everyone is quite understanding the material. Hollis is super helpful with problems and answers questions when they arise.
Awesome teaching style. very helpful and entertaining
I have taken a few math classes with Hollis, he is HILARIOUS and makes an effort to make math entertaining, and comfortable for you to do on your own. Attendance is required because if you miss notes youre lost, accommodates all students via office hours and email.Great professor who is super intelligent!
Hollis keeps things simple and has an excellent sense of humor which makes for an interesting class. Uses the smart board usually without pre-made PowerPoints. His tests are kept to the point and aren't very lengthly if you're in a 50 minute class. Does quizzes. Homework is pretty much not mandatory but definitely good to keep up with.
Hollis is the man. His teaching style is engaging, and the class was an excellent use of my time and money. This was by no means an easy class, but he does make sure to cover all material that will show up on tests. To everyone complaining about how hard he is: pay attention in class and do the homework assignments and you'll be fine.
Even if your in the third row, if you love math, Hollis is the man. Don't be afraid to ask questions because he does assume you will learn on your own. He covers the method behind the math that is more helpful than just doing the math to me. A student tattooed his name and the quadratic theory on his arm. He's got fans.
Class is very difficult and not much homework is assigned. If you want to do well in this course you must assign yourself homework from the book, come to class, study hard and ask for help when necessary. Hollis is an entertaining professor and teaches well but expects students to be responsible for finding and practicing the problems on their own.
He made math actually enjoyable to learn. He was funny and always had some silly story to tell. He was also very thourough in explaining each detail of a math problem and he's also very chill and didm't make math more stressful that it already was. Definitely recommend him.
Tells jokes instead of teaching. Never grades tests on time and doesn't return emails. Made a not overly hard class impossible to pass. I would NEVER recommend him for an instructor.
Fully expect to be put through the ringer with this class. Math 111 is a hard enough class on its own, so you do not need a wishy washy teacher. We had a substitute teacher for 4 classes. He would assign papers assignments & then never collect them. He showed up late to one of our test and didn't give us extra time in replace. Messy appearance.
Hollis is pretty good about putting notes up and he is funny as hell. You do have to take the time to study and do all the practice quizzes on web assign. He has a beard. Homework is online. If u rely on him to make u study ur going to fail. He's not the clearest guy but he has a great personality . normally I would skip once in awhile but he's rad
Never again! dont take this class with this teacher
There is no help from him and he is super unreliable. I feel like I wasted a whole term in this class doing the online hw. Don't take any hard classes while taking this class. If you take math 111 with Hollis be prepared to have no free time & have him only give u 35 minutes for a huge test BC hes telling jokes for 25 minutes. He tests on Fridays
He's SUPER BAD about homework. Doesn't even open it up correctly, and made us do 2 weeks of homework in 1 week because he didnt open up any homework from the week before. The homework is super sloppy even though it's online. Great personality, though. And he teaches 45 clear and awesome. I voted all 1's so that his avg goes down because of hwork.
Ok lectures.
Hollis is funny--for the first week. then he expects you to laugh at the jokes he tells instead of teaching. the whole class had to buy a new book or the online web pass (at least $90) for online homework so he doesn't have to grade papers. notes are iffy and if the whole class doesn't respond to Qs immediately he gets mad.
Hollis has targeted me for no reason and grades my papers much harsher than all the other students. He also let's everyone but me make up assignments- I had surgery, a legit reason, and you can tell other people just skipped. He is rude to me for no reason and I am the only one with an F . I will be going to the dean of students. Unbelievable.
I think Hollis is one if the best math teachers I have ever had! He is personable, reasonable, and an enjoyable person to be around. He gives clear step by step instructions, and is approachable. He also has a great knack for putting these math lessons into practical uses so you can actually understand vs. thinking of it abstractly.
Hollis is a great guy! His jokes are corny yet funny and his class was never painful to sit through. Sometimes when explaining concepts he would go a little fast so I had to work with other students or tutors on my own time to get caught up. He cares about his students and is always willing to help. I am really going to miss his class!
Hollis was simply awesome! He makes the best jokes and he really values class participation. He even brought chocolate to encourage participation. He looks intimidating at first but he's actually very flexible with his teaching methods. Do the work and you'll be fine.
Fun class. Made me glad I went.
Favorite math professor ever. He will paint the bigger picture for you, and expect you to learn the more basic concepts on your own. Which I think is the best way to learn math. Also he's really entertaining. He really cares about his students
Wastes a lot of time trying to joke around and be funny. Lectures over easy problems and then assigns hard problems as homework. Will not take again.
Makes math practical AND looks like Jeff Bridges!
Hollis is a comedian as much as he's a math teacher. He tries to make math relatable through laughter. Not everyone appreciates this, but I sure did. He was very helpful during office visits and is very good about extending homework deadlines as need be. Seems to have missed some big math 111 concepts but overall was a great class.
He's really good at helping you actually understand the math. I took 254 from another teacher and had almost no idea what was going on the whole term, and had almost the opposite situation with Hollis. His frequent joking seems to polarize some people, but regardless the quality of his teaching is fantastic. Reasonable workload and grading as well.
Work hard, pay attention and study after class with other students.
Hollis is one of the best math teachers I have ever had! He is so good at explaining things and he never makes anyone feel stupid. He applies concepts to real life sceneries and it really sticks with you. I would highly recommend taking him, he is awesome!
Oh my goodness, Hollis is the best math teacher I've ever had. He is so funny. He makes sure that you are learning the material and he won't test you on things you haven't gone over at least twice (unless it's simple). He feels like a dad, jokes and all, but he also gives some great advice through his many stories. He wants you to like math. (:
I don't know if calculus is easy or Hollis made it easy for me!
Hollis is a great teacher. He uses a lot of analogies to make sure you understand the material. He also has a lot of work done in class with your table groups, so find people you want to sit with and work with. There is a decent amount of online homework, so stay on top of it. It can be hard to reach him outside of class though. Be aware of that.
This is my first term out of the next three that I will have him, and out of my whole college experience, he has been my favorite professor by far. He is genuinely caring, and works hard to make sure that you grasp the material in your own way. The homework is a lot, but he doesn't collect it unless he can tell that you are not doing it.
Hollis is so funny get ready for lots of puns! Show up and participate and you will pass.
Hollis thinks he is funny. He is actually condescending and rude. If your goal is to sit through a painful comedy routine then take his class. If you want a teacher who actually teaches and puts effort in to the class then take anyone else.
Hollis is a great teacher for those who are math illiterate like I am. His course is pretty homework intensive but that's because he uses the Aleks software, and it tends to tailor everything to your needs a great example would be myself, I had zero understanding of pretty much everything so my homework load was quite high compared to others.
Is very helpful. If you don't understand something he walks you through it. Makes topics easy to understand and giges you the necessary practice to succeed
Hollis is a very diligent teacher& is sure that no one is left behind. His communication skills and teaching ability is second to none. I am not a book smart person on average but he made it easy. I am still able to contact him for advice when I need it &he has helped me with multiple math concepts since having him as a teacher almost a year ago.
Lectures are hilarious and awesome, and its clear that he cares about his students. Tells hilarious stories and helps students along in whatever they are having trouble with. Has sporadic HW, online and on worksheets; doesn't tell you about online HW, but its still required. Doesn't have office hours, which is something you might consider.
Hollis, despite caring about his students, was seemingly quite condescending at times in an attempt to joke with us. He would oftentimes ask a question, then after nobody answered, just finish the problem and skip past it without explaining. Very knowledgeable and a kind soul, but not a tremendous instructor of the material.
Hollis is a great guy, and I loved taking advanced algebra with him last year. His online class structure this year, however, was abysmal. It was super hard to learn with a combo of a third party website and Google Classroom. It was very hard to get feedback, and with the assumption students show up, recordings were not posted. Just hard to learn.
great in person teacher. willing to help in and out of class. genuinely cares about each individual student's learning
Hollis was the best professor I've ever had, and the only one that was so good that I felt compelled to write a review on here. He always kept things interesting, made sure we understood the bigger picture and genuinely cared about our success.
Sort of anti technology in class but moved so fast you had to have his lecture notes (one note) open or else you would miss something. Was very difficult about using DAS accommodations like extra time, alternative testing location, etc. Ended up teaching myself most of the material the weekend before the final.
Show up to class and do your homework and you are set for an easy A. He love answering questions, so don't be afraid to ask them!
Hollis teaches with the expectation of you seeking out more information after the lecture and that is the ONLY way you can succeed. I asked for help with an APA and he shamed me for not knowing what I was doing because I had been talking with groupmates previously. He is impatient and overall make me feel stupid in the classroom. :I
Hollis is really nice, and he does his best to make difficult subjects understandable. He is also very committed to making sure that you fully grasp concepts, to the point that if enough students seem unsure about something, he will go back and reteach the whole "behind the scenes parts of the subject. Many Dad jokes and puns :)
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. If you have to take math after this class you will have no idea what you are doing. He literally told us he teaches 20% of the required material. I could not tell you what I have learned this year. Plus he is a SUPER harsh grader and makes you feel dumb when you ask questions. Save yourself. Trust me.
Hollis was a great professor who laid out a very simple guideline for success. He's personable in a down-to-earth sarcastic way. Very funny and uniquely inspiring. If he taught every math course i'd major in mathematics. Take him if you like to have fun while learning.
Hollis was extremely difficult this term. He had to take 2 weeks off for family, which we understood, but our poor sub was left with nothing to work with. He did not make any effort to contact her regarding material, so sub tried her best to teach with nothing from Hollis. Not to mention his condescending "jokes". Test scores were
This review is for the math75 in person class but that wasn't an option to select on here. He was a phenomenal teacher and he makes class fun and engaging. You can tell he genuinely cares about doing his job well and he's one of the best teachers I've ever had. Very clear on what assignments, tests, and homework are due and by when. 10/10
I took his course during winter term, and this was the first time since high school I actually was comfortable with my professor. He was really understanding, offered some extra credit, and stayed to help explain problems to me multiple times. Only thing I didn't enjoy was the group project for the final. Didn't have a clear rubric. Very odd.
He would give us reviews for the test, and they would not correlate with what the test was about. I never really felt confident about the tests because he never gave us a straightforward answer on what they were about. By far the worst teacher I've had in college. ONLY TEACHES HALF THE MATERIAL!! BE READY TO TEACH YOURSELF EVERYTHING!!!
Hollis really has a love for teaching math. He always pushes us to dive deeper into our explanations and understanding of the basic math concepts. I really enjoyed being in his class and learning from him. It was a fairly easy class if you paid attention, did homework when it was assigned, and asked questions when you needed help.
Diff Calc is tough but Hollis makes it enjoyable. First math class where I actually learned instead of just memorizing. Homework varies weekly but isn't overwhelming, offers test corrections. He breaks things down, stays after to help. If you put in effort you will succeed. One of the best math teachers I've had. Helped me relearn my love for math.
