just dont take her
Her class was VERY easy...but boring. So, if you want an easy A I recommend taking Individual and Society with her.
helpful, nice, somewhat boring class
Very intelligent and clear!! One of the better professors!!
although her class was somewhat boring, she's a great person and tries to make it interesting, and she's a very nice woman. one of the easiest classes you will ever take - her exams are open book/open notes, and you get to work in groups, and you go over the exam at the end of the class period so you're guranteed an A on that section.
very boring class... didnt learn a thing. rambles on about her thoughts. learned absolutely nothing. waste of time. wrote papers on stuff we didnt talk about. BORING!
I wish I could recommend Holly because I like her but I can't. She is very disorganized and a weak lecturer.
Very easy teacher who doesn't stay on task at all. Sure some of the stuff is boring but if i can make the best out of it anyone can. I got an "A" in this class so it must not be too hard. I would recommend her to anyone :)
Rambled on and on, in that giggly too-friendly kind of way. I hated the class. Although it didn't help that the one I took was a 2 1/2 hour night class.... 6:15-8:45. Bleh.
She likes to teach you her ideas rather than strictly facts. She likes to teach theories like facts. She jumps from subject to subject without tying them together. If you must take her DO NOT take her night class. Will want to shoot yourself.
She is a feminist...BIG TIME! She is very nice but does ramble on. You have only 2 tests...one open book and the final is the same test as the open book! You watch a lot of movies and just talk about them
VERY liberal, and lets you know it. Tries, but 2 1/2 hours at night gets boring, like in the first 5 minutes. Assignments are never "due" you can do them if you want. Easy, but boring, and you don't learn much.
She was the easiest professor I have ever had. I probably skipped half the classes and still got an A. Exams were open book and then she would give us all the answers. Impossible to not get a 100. Papers were extremely easy.
Wow, talk about boring! Im a student that has never fallen asleep in any class ever, but this woman, destroyed me..Going to class is optional at best, she doesnt teach anything. My friend only went to 3 classes and got an A+..(Her mole needs to be removed)
Likes to use movies rather than text books. She gives group tests. Sometimes her class is wicked boring. A light work load. She is pretty funny. I would take her again. She takes attendance, but it is only worth 30 pts of your total grade. I fell asleep a lot, but pulled off an A.
Extremely boring but nice and happy. Loves to help and gives group tests. Easy Easy Easy. I went to class about half the time and got an A. I would recomend her to anyone! its a good way to boost your GPA.
very very easy.. if you take her class for individuals and society it'll double up as a diversity credit.. not really sure why but can't complain with that!!!
She is so sweet and loves to hear whatever you have to say! Makes me feel very comfortable. Easy class to pass
I believe she is friends with Pelosi or maybe even Chairman Mao. If you are interested in learning nothing about other cultures and care only about how evil the white man is you will fit right at home in her extreme liberal America hating class. She is un-American at best. You can post/say anything as long as it follows her far leftist agenda.
If you like to have set due dates, this is not the class for you. It can be confusing trying to remember to turn in everything but you get used to it. Some days are very interesting while others are very boring. Online quizzes are annoying, but papers and essays are pretty easy.
All over the place, you have 2 internet sites, not very understandable, and random due dates. But, there is pretty much no homework, easy online quizzes, and it is random attendance. You also have to read a book, but it's not bad. I must say she is very left wing liberal.
If you want an easy A take this class! Although she can be forgetful and scatterbrained, it's worth it to get a good grade. Attendance taken one every few weeks. One downfall to her class is that you have to buy a $35 membership to a website to take your quizzes. Other than that it isn't that bad of a class.
She is super easy! The class is interesting though. My biggest complain about the class is she hates men. She always talks about how men are the root of all evil. If you can get over that fact the class will be fine.
Terrible teacher, she is an extremist and hates men. She also hates white people. The class is easy to get a good grade in if you can put up with her stupidity for an entire semester.
I took American Indian Studies with her for a diversity credit. She grades very easy, and you get a lot of credit for participation. Tests are open-book and you can work in groups. The resources are available if you really want to learn, but it's not really necessary to do all the readings.
By far the easiest individual and society teacher at this school. Only professor I've heard of for this class that has online quizzes (2 tries each), and has no formal tests. Just a couple required events to attend and a couple essay assignments. Class is quite boring, but you don't really need to pay attention to her endless powerpoints.
So fun to watch her teach. She has this semi-frazzled energy about her. But super empathetic and interested in her students lives and thoughts. The class is REALLY easy, and she will help you/work with you every step of the way. If you show up and participate each class it's an easy A
While she is really unorganized, her class was my favorite this semester.I was nervous at first because she's very liberal and I'm not so much, but she never made me feel uncomfortable. Her passion and unique information was refreshing and useful. Her class was supereasy. She also provides many sources for you to learn what you want/interests you
It is easy to get a good grade in her class, I have had her for a Gened before this Race class and gotten A's in both. However, I can't say I recommend this race class since it is extremely liberal and some of it is ridiculous.
She is in my opinion my worst professor this semester. She is very unorganized and goes off-topic. Take her 2 and a half hour night class once a week. She gives a break in the middle where you can leave since she already has the attendance done. All you need is the book for the quizzes and a little bit of common sense. Still an easy A.
This class was a joke! I didnt learned anything from this class. Everything I learned was by watching movies in class. Her lectures are so boring and unorganized. One day she decided to leave class because she was hungry. Another time we had guest speaker who was Native American. I learned from the speaker in 1 hour than I did the whole semester.
Take this teacher if you want to get an A. Online quizzes and a very easy grader. Don't bother taking notes in class though because they are irrelevant.
Prof Denning is very kind and approachable. She is willing to move deadlines to fit with your busy schedule. She is very passionate about this subject of American Indians and allows students to enjoy this massive subject more by digging deeper into the areas of History or culture that interest us. Easy A as she is always willing to help clarify.
Such a boring class. I feel like I didn't learn anything while attending, and I attended every class. She takes the worst notes on the board because her thoughts are all over the place. The only positive is its an easy class, but then again I didn't learn anything new. WORST class for me for the semester.
One of the nicest people on this campus! Her class isn't "in-your-face" awesome but since it's a requirement she's such an adorable teacher and besides being SUPER nice she's more than helpful with answering questions you have in the class. There is one point when you need to read a short book (like 300 pages) but it's still interesting. TAKE HER!
Don't take 2.5 hour night class, it's brutal. Easy class. Hard to follow lectures/powerpoints.
Professor Denning has very confusing assignments. Her classes are VERY BORING. If you do not like giving your opinion during discussions DO NOT TAKE HER. She docks a lot of points. She is also very unorganized. I would not take her again.
This class is really easy but super boring. Also, at the end of the semester she will change your grade based on what grade she thinks you should get. She changed 3 of my grades so that I would get a B+ instead of an A-.
Very nice lady but VERY unorganized. You never know what is expected from you on any given day. However, there are many extra credit opportunities and she isn't a hard grader.
If you do the readings and show up to class and participate you will pass. You definitely get the grade you deserve. I really liked this class and Holly. I would highly recommend her and this class!
As others have noted, she is very nice but horribly unorganized. It is never clear what is expected of you, what is optional, what is graded, etc. There are too many online assignments with poorly defined requirements, especially online discussions. This class is sort of an intro to sociology. Quiz answers are all common knowledgesense.
Holly Denning is the best professor I've had so far. I learned so much about the Native American population and the problems they still face today due to her passion of the subject. Really easy class if you put in the work and participation is huge. She's really nice and very willing to help you outside of class. I highly recommend her!
Horrible teacher Web based class largely based on discussion but if you discuss your own opinion AT ALL she will one, call you out over a post that everyone can see, and two downgrade you for voicing your opinion. I wasn't aware you that you couldn't voice your opinion in college, let alone in a discussion post for a sociology class. she is a joke
This is one professor that you want to stay away from. Extremely boring, doesn't organize any class well, talks about random things that have no correlation towards the class topic, and she will only show viewpoints from one side. On one hand though, it is an easy class. She won't be difficult at all, but the entire class is one big joke.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. She is the most unorganized person I've ever met and it is very hard to follow along in this class as she puts everything online and doesn't organize it so that students can understand it. It takes about 30 min to find what you're looking for on her site. Would definitely not recommend her.
write a few papers, finial is online. Group quizzes and one group project. Kind of boring and a little weird but very nice and willing to help. Gives really good feedback and going to class is kind of pointless but easy points for going.
This was my first online course and I don't really have any complaints. There are weekly discussions you must participate in, 7 really easy online quizzes, and about 4 major papers and assignments. Her expectations are very clear and is very helpful. She gets a bit unorganized at times and deadlines and assignments are at times difficult to find.
Holly Denning is a great professor. She cares a lot about what she's teaching, and I think being passionate is important. I understand how some people may feel she is unorganized, but her class is meant to be free-flowing and open. It is a discussion style class, not a lecture.
I enjoyed taking Professor Denning's class very much. She is one of the kindest, most welcoming and understanding people I have ever met. At times she can be a bit confusing and disoriented, however I feel that can easily be forgiven considering we can all be that way at times. She is always open to giving extra help outside of class.
She doesn't have control of her class at all. I don't even know what we're learning about and I never miss class.
Super nice and caring. Her class can be sorta boring but she tries to make it as fun as possible. Show up to class and you'll pass no problem.
She's a solid choice for Individual and Society. She is really lenient, but class can be really boring. Not too much work, so you will pass the class no problem.
Not many graded assignments - so they matter. All tests/quizzes are pretty much verbatim from the book making them easy. Need to participate in weekly discussions as it's a decent portion of the grade. Allows for extra credit. Doesn't do many (any?) lectures, but had other videos plus reading the text.
Highly recommend for Ind. & Society, if you're looking for an easy class. Quizzes are around 15 questions and are all online, so you can use your stuff while taking them. You can easily get by without doing any of the readings, so the book is basically useless (aside from using on quizzes). Only grades on easy assignments. Class is super boring tho
Prof. Denning is an amazing person overall. She is one of the kindest and most caring professor's you will meet. She is very passionate about what she is teaching and you can clearly see that in her lectures. You have quizzes online that easy, you just read from the chapter to find the answers. You will read memoir but trust me it is worth it.
Super nice lady, very easy class. Attendance is only mandatory on certain days, like group discussion days, so when you skip class just make sure it's not on a discussion day. Not a speck of homework, only a few easy things in the beginning of the semester. Have to read a memoir and write an essay on it at the end though. All quizzes are online!
The lectures are hard to sit through because of boring material and the monotone voice used all of class. Do not recommend.
Easily the worst professor Ive had this semester. Granted her class isnt hard, but when its primarily graded for the discussion topics its not fun. Shes very condescending and rude when you email her, and takes off points when you try to voice an opinion that is different from hers. Very unorganized. Avoid her class.
Okay this Professor is so unorganized and unclear, I couldn't not understand what was expected of me for this course. Material was SUPER interesting but never knew what the assignments asked so never knew what I would get. Lots of extra credit opportunities and super easy to do, but dang, I was frustrated all semester with her.
very hard to follow - all over the place
Let me start by saying Professor Denning is a nice lady. However, when she is is lecturing she does not follow a process that makes sense. She jumps around in thoughts and does not relate them to one another. It is difficult to take notes because she does not write things down in the order she talks about them.
Denning was by far the WORST professor ever had. She teaches nothing about the material of the book, yet tests us on our knowledge of the textbook. You are required to buy a book outside of class which you will write a paper on that she gives absolutely no information on what she wants you to say. Avoid her at all costs.
Awful Professor. Her lectures make no sense. She jumps around from random topics and connects them poorly. You need to read the textbook for quizzes, but she doesn't even make an effort to talk about the book. She makes us sit in a circle and talk about our feelings. She also assigns a paper, gives no context, takes off points when she doesn't agree
D2L course is very hard to navigate...
Pretty easy online class. Discussions every week and a book report, but otherwise not bad. Not the most interesting class but easy enough to take
She is a very nice lady but her lectures are impossible to follow. She goes on random tangents that literally mean nothing. She didn't get to a whole unit yet still tested us about it on the final. She gives you answers to the quizzes before you turn them in though, so the class is not impossible it just sucks.
This class overall was very easy. Be ready to read but quizzes are open book and notes. Denning can be unclear and the organization of the class is a little unsteady but she did a fine job. I wouldn't take her again just for the reason she is a little all over the place.
I like her. A few people had questions-she replied quickly. For winterim: 5 units; discussions on each; 1-4webquests; Videos, Readings, 6 online/open book quizzes. A comprehensive final; &extra credit. If you are familiar with online and pace of 3 week course you will have no trouble at all. She does mark down grammar. I enjoyed the class
NOT clear at all about due dates and what is required to do. Things are all over the place and very hard to follow. Took during Winterim so it is fast paced but is very stressful and is not helpful at all.
Had no trouble with course organization; My suggestion with online 3 week classes is to try and work yourself 2 days ahead of the syllabus.(you then have time to do the extra credit; or if u have questions, etc) I finished the course early. Put in about 3 hours a day. Course has a back-end work load; Stay ahead of it or could get buried at end.
I was worried going in based on comments of disorganization. Just followed the content and d2l - along with looking at dropbox descriptions. Knew what was due. Used my book as resource for tests(didn't read chapters); quizzes and MC final super easy!I've taken 3 GenEds all online and this course had the most work but it by no means is difficult.
If you have different beliefs than her she wont accept it. Lots of writings and quizzes
Hands down one of my best professors, she is always willing to work with you and she is so understanding. Attendance was required, but lectures always finished early.
Ms. Denning is a little disorganized. It's tough to tell exactly what she wants from an assignment and she grades pretty harshly. You'll probably be confused 80% of the time. Pretty easy class but the confusion gets a bit annoying. Obviously I could have done more to be less confused but the class could be structured differently.
This professor is awful. Her lectures do not make any sense, as she jumps around from topic to topic with no connection whatsoever. She gives homework on topics that were never talked about in class. There is a book, but she never talked about it or used in class and gave quizzes on it. Boring, monotone voice. Avoid.
She doesnt give a lot of homework and is a pretty tough grader. She doesnt really teach anything at all much less anything that is recent. She falsely accused me of plagiarizing. The final was a class exam and only worth 20 points, really not worth my time. I was very disappointed with this course and wouldnt recommend taking her class.
Professor Denning is one of the hardest professors I have ever had, only because of her disorganization. Her lectures make no sense due to the fact that she doesn't even know what she's talking about herself. She goes from one topic to the other, and gives false information as well. Her assignments are unclear and hard to understand. Avoid her.
Professor Denning is a very caring person and you can tell she cares about her students. But she is a very critical and hard grader, gives too many reading assignments and lectures are long-winded. She does provide a lot of extra credit opportunities which can help out anyone's grade.
Holly is a nice person. But, her classes are very disorganized & have no structure. All of her content is also very bias rather than fact based. Her political beliefs are prominent in every lecture & theres no room for variance. Would prefer if the class was middle of the road with politics rather than her trying to pound her beliefs into your head
This class was horrible. Holly is just not it. Her lectures are scattered everywhere and we have class three times a week. It also doesnt help that she teaches the most boring drawn out class. My major has nothing to do with gender studies and i have to take this bs class still and get 80% on quizzes because the answers are subjective.
Holly is a good professor, while her classes are more student-driven she is very accessible and very easy to reach out to. She also spends quality time making sure you understand the subject matter and her quizzes/tests are fairly simple if you read the textbook.
Professor Denning doesn't do a good job connecting textbook material to class material. The syllabus isn't followed, and she skips all around the place every class period. Maybe this class would be better if taught in person (I took it during Covid), but I didn't enjoy it and little information was taken away.
Professor Denning, she walks around alot and doesn't speak up and she is very caring but her lectures and everything is disorganized and everything in the book is different from which she teaches you
Doesn't teach objectively and is very disorganized in teaching and in utilizing canvas.
Really easy class, but very long and boring lectures. Not really mandatory to attend. Read the chapters, do the quizzes, discussions, and exams and you will pass very easily. Not a hard class at all.
Holly Denning is very caring but she is very boring and her lectures literally make no sense. Her lectures are so random and just difficult to understand. She also assigns a lot of homework and is just super disorganized with using Canvas. Way too much reading in that class and she's a hard grader when it comes to assignments.
A VERY nice lady, but she is VERY unorganized. Lectures are very off-topic, therefore you do sooooo much unnecessary reading. For what is supposed to be an easy course she is a tough grader as well. Going to class was pointless at times as you don't cover the topics you had to read a lot about.
Im not really sure we're to begin, her only good quality is that she does offer extra credit. Otherwise her lectures are boring and are so far off topic it's probably best you don't even show up to class. I don't know what's worse, her grading criteria, her explanation of assignments, or her response to students emails.
Very unorganized, goes off on tangents during lectures which makes it hard to understand or learn anything. Really most of what you learn is when you read the books required for the class.
Professor Denning was very unorganized, from not following the syllabus calendar to not grading assignments she was all over the place. Very unprofessional when responding to emails and nothing she lectures about is really interesting. The book taught me way more than she did.
She basically rambles during the whole class and doesn't make sense. If she caught you talking to someone (even as a whisper) she would call you out in front of the class. She complains about students form other classes as well. Lots of homework, she never grades it immediately, and she's a picky grader. Disliked it.
Does not like talkihng during class, is a hard grader, gives a lot of homework, overshares, doesnt answer emails
She is one of the most political teachers I have ever met, if your opinions do not align with hers when it comes to what you are writing about get ready to alter it. She brought up abortion, gun rights, and more out of nowhere and would go back and forth with opinions that don't match which led to me and others getting docked on essays.
Overall, the class was easy, but most of my knowledge came from reading the textbook or researching things myself. Holly Denning is one of the most political teachers I have ever had and she will not listen to anyone else opinions. She also can be very rude and degrading when you try to give your opinion (which she asks for during lectures).
Very tough grader, hard to understand what she wants from you.
Worst professor i've ever had. So unprofessional, argued with students who didn't agree with her. Grading is all over the place and no real feedback. DO NOT RECOMMEND AT ALL. Avoid her if you can. Never been so frustrated with a professor before.
Celebrating being free from this class. Course content was eh, too many discussion posts. Regularly came off as immensely condescending. She invalidated opinions she explicitly asked for students to share, and called people wrong to the entire class. Fantastic! Threatened to dock points if assignments are submitted on time but "last minute".
She literally said to the class that only men's suicide is justified because of their inability to openly show emotions. Shes crazy. Nothing she lectures about is actually on any tests. I cannot find a place to start about reasons why someone would actually enjoy her as a teacher. If you get really personal with her, she'll love you.
If you like bossy, know it all hippies, you will love this professor. On the upside, Denning cancels classes very frequently!
Very political and assumed everyone thought the same thing as her. Kind person, but wastes a lot of our time. I never skipped class, but could have and gotten the same grade. The class is easy, but she expects reading and participation. Tests/quizzes/exams are all 2 tries on Canvas. Still, I would not recommend.
It was fine but during presentations she interupts ALOT. Don't come to this class excepting an A
Professor Denning has strong views that can sometimes clash with students. While the class is challenging, using resources like the textbook, study apps like Unstuck study, and attending study sessions can help. Overall, an engaging professor if you're willing to put in the effort.
