she knows alot about what she is talking about, and tries to make letrue interesting with stories and pictures, provides review sheets for her exams which are fair

She is the best professor I've had by far, and she can make even the most boring subjects interesting, and she can make us laugh. I've taken two of her classes, loved them both, and I am sad I can't take them again.
She's a great teacher for those who want to learn. Not many of those in Anthro 101, though. Her talents are wasted on the young.
She makes lectures interesting by relating anecdotes about her own children and family life, which is the best way to keep students focused on the material.
She kicks ass... no way around it. Makes the classes fun, keeps it half way interesting even when it shouldn't be, and the class is pretty gal darn easy. Enjoy, ta-ta.
Very well done

gotta love her stories. very nice lady.
She really makes the class a lot of fun.
Lectures always were interesting... Even when the material wasn't. Recommend it for new students, also fulfills a couple of requirements
She is a very friendly and entertaining professor.
She is a very entertaining and talented woman. High personal and professional values. Quotes: "When I was in school, if a guy had an earring, it meant he was a pirate! Arr!" "Marvelous purple seats!"
GREAT teacher, she is so sweet and entertaining. She has a great sense of humor and knows how to make lectures interesting. Good class, not too hard only three exams (no final) and one paper. Great first year class!
Great lecturer, not too boring! Easy class.
I loved Miss Peters-Golden! Her stories were entertaining and somehow always turned out to be relevant to what we were learning about. Tests not too hard as long as you go to lecture and/or read the textbook
she is the best! if ur taking 101 make sure you get her. she always manages to spice up the material by adding personal stories, most of which are hilarious. the textbook isnt bad either, you learn alot of interesting facts. i reccomend this as a great first year class bc it eases you into college
Good lecturer, pretty funny, and very knowledgeable, but the class is SO boring and the tests always have 2 or 3 nitpicky questions that require you to have done the reading thoroughly.
Amazing class, you'll learn a lot with minimal effort needed for exams. Also, it takes care of your race and ethnicity requirement.
Definitely one of the best classes I've taken at U of M. She makes it even more interesting by showing a lot of videos and bringing in guest speakers who specialize in whatever topic it is that we're talking about.
she's amazing and funny, if you take her class go to lecture, great story teller plus she's from brooklyn, and a dreamboat.
very interesting, very fun. she finds a way to keep you awake and tells interesting stories from the field. easy workload and exams. her class is not to be missed
Pretty interesting. VERY easy exams.
She's HILARIOUS! The class is cool--she lectures once a week and the other class is a video or a panel of guest speakers. It's not too hard and you learn A LOT. I highly recommend it!
very interesting and fun class, great stories during lecture, highly recommended
I was told to take this class because it was interesting and not too difficult. The material is interesting and Holly makes the lectures fun with great stories. The exams (3 multiple choice) are not too difficult, but the GSIs liked to trick you with a lot of questions. I would have preferred a writing exam. Be interested or don't take it.
She is a good teacher but at times tries to be too funny. The material would be a lot more interesting if she went into more depth. The easiness of the course makes it boring and slow at times. Overall a class worth taking.
Funny lectures and stories. Easy class but interesting. :)
NOT Funny.. but the fact that she tries makes lecture a lot better. Great lecturer who provides examples for every major concept you go over. Definitely worth taking.
easy class and interesting topics.
extremely easy class but interesting aspects too- discussions were tougher just because you're reading non-textbook material. took it a few years back but best my memory she was entertaining and was from Brooklyn so there's nothing wrong with that
She's a great lecturer! I'll admit it wasn't quite the blow off class I expected it to be, but it was still pretty easy. We only had to write one paper and homework was minimal.
She's GREAT. My advisor recommended her. Very clear, interesting, hilarious in lecture. PLUS you get an exam review guide before each exam that's REALLY helpful. Key to this class= PAY ATTENTION IN LECTURE. TAKE GOOD NOTES. That's it. AND don't wait until the last minute to do your paper, it's easy, just write it.
I won't wreck her b/c I think she's a good person, but the class didn't do it for me. A topic that I'm not interested in and she's making corny jokes the whole time? Lame.
One of the best classes I've taken at U of M. Prof Peters-Golden is awesome! Lectures are really interesting and I like the stories she tells. I would highly recommend this class as its really interesting and not very demanding of your time.
She is a great lecturer with many interesting stories and facts. There is quite a bit of reading to do with a huge coursepack, but most of the articles are bearable. The class really is not that easy to ace, however, because there are two papers and two written exams which could ask you about anything.
I thought she was great. She was very clear and told stories that related well to the material we were covering. This definitely made it interesting. The workload is pretty easy, too.
AWESOME class! The teacher is not only knowledgeable; she can TEACH. Brings in guest speakers, shows relevant films, has relevant readings, gives great lectures. Definately one of the highest quality teachers at UM. If only all instructors would take the effort she does to ensure studenst have a valuable classtime experience. Learned a lot! TAKE IT
Good class for freshman, the GSIs for this class SUCK however, but the professor is pretty cool. I mean, who else brings in Curious George and talks about him for 1.5 hours???
It's okay, don't believe the hype about the class being a blowoff. There's 3 books you read, and to me, i hated them. waste of my time. she's a good lecturer, but bring a recorder cause she talks fast, and she gets her exam questions mostly from the lecture. If you hated psychology, you do not want to take this class cause it's the same style.
Interesting, funny...really tries to make the class comprehensive.
Her lectures are incredibly boring but a tape recorder is useful. If you can stay awake during lectures and while reading the textbook the class is easy.
Prof. Peters-Golden was a great teacher. Class was pretty interesting for the most part, and she's pretty funny and entertaining. If you don't go to lecture you need to get somebody's notes because she quotes her lectures in tests, and that is stuff that is NOT in the textbook. But I would reccommend this class, just pray you get a decent GSI!!!
She is very entertaining. Not an easy A
she is a great lecturer and a lot of fun to have as a professor. she is a little crazy but that's what makes it interesting. she tells funny stories that keep you engaged and help you remember material for the exams. tests aren't terribly difficult but it's crucial to go to lecture and do all of the assigned readings
She is an excellent professor whose lectures are extremely important to go to because she uses overheads instead of powerpoint so taking notes is a MUST! Don't worry, she is really funny so lecture is entertaining. Tests are easy; just look at notes and re-read the summaries from the chapters. All mult. choice questions, easy A!
Great teacher, really funny. Section is kind of pointless for this class. Makes lecture really interesting and has funny stories.
Holly was a wonderful teacher who kept her lectures interesting and was clear about all material tested on
her tests can be really hard. her tests reflect whether or not you paid attention to EVERYTHING she said. for example, she would have questions that ask "the topic of __ was discussed in lecture, and the examples included everything EXCEPT.."she talks fast, and it's hard to write down everything. you have to record her lectures to do decently well.
She is an extremely nice lady and is really interested in our learning. I did learn quite a bit but sadly her tests as said in the previous comment are just not based on the concepts of anthropology. Well, not at all but maybe 60% anthro and 40% did you listen to every word she said and did you memorize Kottak. Plus, the GSI I had was horrid.
Prof. Peters-Golden is fairly entertaining at lectures, but on the exams you are expected to know very specific details of each lecture. Class was fairly interesting, and lectures were entertaining, until you get to the test and realize you need to know everything about them.
Holly is a nice person and TRIES to make lecture interesting (even though its not). However, her tests are impossible! If you are trying to take this class as a "blowoff" DROP IT!!! Unless you go to EVERY lecture and write down EVERY word, you will do terrible on her tests. Good luck if you take her class. Take Fricke if you can, he is easy!
HARD DOOOOO NOT TAKE>>> SHE SEEMS NICE BUT ON HER TEST SHE LOVES TO TRICK STUDENTS>>> DO NOT TAKE
Medical Anthropology is a great class. Professor Peters uses a lot of humor, brings in great speakers, and makes lecture very interesting as you learn about medicine you never knew existed. But, lectures are tedious. You write non-stop for an hour and a half b/c they are so dense. She doesn't pause. Find a good GSI or else the class might be rough.
I thought she was a really funny and interesting professor, I learned a lot, and the class was really easy. I took good notes and made sure I knew the stuff on the study guide, but I didn't do any of the Kottak reading and barely did the other reading. I did not put in very much effort for my A-, and she's one of my favorite UM professors ever.
Her lectures are long but very interesting. She keeps it funny and easy to listen to. The reading and the essays are the hard part. The tests are determined by the GSI's so they are usually based on the notes.
Prior to taking this class, I checked this page and i was nervous about the tests/class. However, the tests are not unfair in anyway, in fact if you read and attend lecture and discussion... the tests should be no problem. The essays are a little difficult but just take some thought. And finally, Holly is a wonderful lecturer and teacher.
Really nice and funny. The tests are tricky and I found them hard to get an A on even though I attended lecture.
Wonderful professor! She actually cares about the students and makes lecture interesting. Easy to get an A as long as you take good notes in lecture. There are 50 multiple choice questions on both exams. Exams are noncumulative. Take Prof. Peters-Golden for Anthro 101. You will not regret it!
Great professor! She was always very engaging in her lectures. People say her tests are tricky but they are absolutely not. As long as you are a good note taker and literally memorize your notes, the class will be a piece of cake. I read for the first half of the semester and then stopped afterwards because 99% of the questions are from lecture
She's a very energetic, funny professor
Hands down, THE BEST professor of my college career. I had never taken an anthro class in my life and she made it fun, interesting and left a lasting impression. I highly recommend taking her class. Go to lecture, do the reading and you're guaranteed a good grade. She's one of the best professors you'll have at the University of Michigan.
If you are taking anthroculture because you think it will be an easy intro class. Think again. The format of the class is now changed from the 50 multiple choice tests to a combo of that definition, essays, short answers which the GSI's seem to grade harshly regardless of attending lecture/ and reading the book.Profisnicebutyouwonthaveconatactwithh
Great prof! She makes people laugh in her lectures, which makes me more interested in the material. This class is a good intro to anthro, and I'm glad I took it. The first test was way easier than I expected. She makes a sheet of terms you need to know for each test and if you know it you're set.
Professor Peters-Golden is very entertaining at lecture, she always has stories to help demonstrate her points and you learn a lot of information about the basics of anthro. The exams are super easy, just learn everything on the study sheet, and the GSIs were very generous when it comes to grading. Be prepared to read though! :)
Holly is so funny and she does her best to use funny stories to help you understand the material. The entire lecture hall laughs out loud at least once a lecture. This was a really interesting class and she made it fun! LOVED HER!!!! Discussion was pointless, just come to lecture and your fine
really didn't like this class. she is nice, but her lectures are hard to follow because she uses overheads with no clear headings. it was hard to group concepts and her exams were literally quotes from lecture. tests were otherwise straightforward but the multiple choice was the most confusing
Good class to use for R/E requirement, the lectures are fun to listen to, but does not teach you anything, besides a random collection of facts about different societies.
Entertaining lecturer, but the confusing tests are written by the GSIs, a slightly unorganized group. If you take it, choose HPG. good r/e course...
Exams are graded harshly.
Good class. Peters-Golden is a fun and interesting professor, and the exams aren't bad if you study the professor's review sheet posted on c-tools. Culture Sketches are interesting, but the Kottak textbook isn't completely necessary to read. Lecture is fun, but discussion can be boring. Overall I'd recommend it!
Her lectures are clear and funny. The Kottak textbook is not really necessary - just go to lecture and you'll be fine. I had an extremely helpful GSI - exams are graded fairly and it's not hard to get As on your papers as well. Overall an excellent class.
Absolutely awesome teacher. I was so upset when the semester ended. She is extrememly nice and her exams are completely fair. I highly recommend this professor.
Anthro 101 should be renamed Story Time with Holly! It's kind of ridiculous, but definitely entertaining. I have had a very easy time with the exams and the class average is pretty high. It's worth going to most lectures, because she does sneak weird details from them on the exams to see who has been attending. Overall, a great class!
What a great intro class! Anthro culture is very interesting, especially with Holly. It's almost like she performs to a group of students rather than lecture. Her stories and examples are entertaining and relatable. She's hilarious and always smiling. Really passionate about her subject and the class overall is pretty easy.
Not as great as everyone says. Her tests are mainly written while Shryock's was all multiple choice. Her lecture notes that she provides are subpar at best. Shryock's are very detailed. Yes, she's entertaining, but she tries too hard to get people to come to lecture. When studying for the exams, you will wish she gave understandable lecture notes.
Holly is a cool professor. Even though her lectures are BORING, she always tells funny stories in class. The tests are pretty easy. *MAKE SURE YOU READ THE CULTURE STUDIES*!!! Alson, go to lecture because her overhead slides don't make sense unless you know what she was talking about. The paper was easy.
I love Holly! She's hilarious. Anthro 101 is interesting and super easy. Don't bother with the textbook, read the culture sketches, and go to lecture. Totally worth taking.
LOVE her!!! She's the best prof ever (I had 101 with her too). SUPER easy class if you come to all of the lectures & do the readings...you won't need to do any other studying on the side if you do this. :)
i LOVED this class and loved her. i've never enjoyed a big lecture before. holly is fabulous. such interesting material and anecdotes. definitely take!
The class is extremely interesting, and I'm not an Anthro major. She keeps lecture light, but goes over a lot of stuff. The 3 tests are extremely straight forward, gives out study guides and review sessions. The books are not usually necessary. And I had a great GSI! Overall pretty easy class!
Amazing teacher! Charismatic, engaging, witty, all around outstanding. Use of textbook is rare, and discussion can be helpful if involved.
This class was pretty easy, I am a junior trying to get my last R&E credits. The exams are straight forward and they give you a review, the book is boring but the paper is pretty easy to write and only discussion section takes attendance. Overall, easy A but it is easy to slack off and not prepare enough for exams
she is awesome.
Holly is the best!!! By far my favorite prof at this school. Even though lecture isn't mandatory, you should still go - she's hilarious! The GSI's are really helpful and nice for this class too
Gives the best stories in lecture and some of the multiple choice questions relate to topics and examples only covered in lecture. She clearly knows her material. Literally all you have to do is sit there in lecture and listen and you'll get at least an A if not an A+
This was a really interesting class. She's full of fascinating and often hilarious anecdotes. You will learn a TON about different cultures. It isn't difficult to get an A, but it isn't a total blow-off class, and some of the exam material comes from the textbooks. There was one essay, 4-6 pages, pretty easy as long as you read the book assigned.
I LOVED her lectures. They were always enjoyable and she related each subject and term to a specific personal example. The class is basically memorizing terms...If you study and know your stuff, you should expect an A.
She is such a wonderful teacher! Easy to follow & interesting lectures. Her sense of humor is awesome & she's really easy to pay attention to.
Holly is a great teacher! She keeps the class entertained with her relevant stories (which also help on the exam) while still getting the information across. Genuinely interesting class.
This is a class that anyone, no matter what major, should take. Peters-Golden keeps it interesting with her stories and you learn things that you can actually use. Not to mention that the grades are VERY fair if you do the work! Highly recommend.
Holly is a great lecturer and keeps class interesting and humorous. Her passion for the subject's clearly evident. Three exams non-cumulative each with a comprehensive study guide mean that lecture isn't necessary. Great class to knock out your R&E req with. highly recommended
Great lecturer but would not recommend taking from her if you are looking for an easy A. Her exams are definitely way harder than every other prof so although I loved the lecture, her exams weren't worth it. Attending lecture is not necessary but the readings are if you even want to try to pass the exams, and there is a lot of reading...a lot.
Holly is awesome! She is extremely passionate about the subject and it shows. She kept lectures entertaining--good stories. Readings are interesting too.
This was a great class and I would recommend it to anyone. She is extremely clear during lecture and is both entertaining and funny. I feel that I really learned a lot. Although attendance isn't mandatory, still go because her lectures are that interesting. The tests are very fair and pretty easy if you go to lecture and keep up with reading.
Prof. Peters-Golden definitely knows what she is talking about and does a good job of helping students understand material. The stories help keep lecture interesting. If you're looking for an easy A, there are probably some easier classes out there, but it wasn't overly strenuous.
Holly is the best! She is very funny and has the entire lecture hall laughing at least once per lecture. I would recommend attending lecture, because her exams are based on this rather than the textbook. If you attend lecture and skim the culture sketches reading assignments, you will have no need to use the actual textbook. VERY EASY A!
Very helpful and clear in class! Really amazing and interesting lectures that were articulated perfectly. Love dis girl
Had no experience with Anthro before this class. LOVE anthro now. Holly is funny, energetic, and has amazing stories. Fantastic class and also really easy. You MUST attend lecture though because her slides are very undetailed.
Lectures are very clear. There are two tests and two papers. The tests are relatively difficult, but Holly is very helpful and a good lecturer.
She is one of the best profs I had! She doesn't post her notes online so you have to go to class. but still highly recommended. She is a great story teller and keeps you engaged!
This woman is amazing. I would take another class of hers just because she was the one teaching it. And her Judge Judy impersonation is spot on. :D
love her! the gsis for discussion all suck, but this professor is the best. her lectures are interesting and fun and made me really like anthro
Very funny, but very chatty
Absolutely loved her! Her lectures were very entertaining, and she tells great stories that illustrate the concepts. The work load was manageable- 3 exams and a paper, but it wasn't too bad. I would definitely recommend her for any anthro course.
She was a decent prof. Honestly, this class was not as interesting as I thought it would be. One thing I did not like was that she did not use PowerPoints; instead, you had to listen to her talk for an hour and a half and take notes. Her exams were pretty easy and straight-forward though (although a few of her multiple choice were kind-of tricky)
Holly is fantastic; a wonderfully funny woman, very knowledgeable about anthropology, incredibly entertaining lecturer. She doesn't use much technology, doesn't post her lecture notes online, doesn't use powerpoints either so you really have to go to lecture and take good notes. Her tests are really hard though, focusing on small details.
Dr. Peters-Golden has been by far my favorite professor at U of M. I've taken both of her classes just to have her as a prof. Everybody should take classes with her before they graduate.
I took this class freshman year, and I absolutely loved it. Prof Holly is absolutely amazing and hilarious, and knows how to make class interesting. If you only attend lecture and take notes on it and do nothing else, you will definitely get a high B or an A if you're a good studier. Definitely would recommend.
Holly is the bomb dot com. I have taken two of her classes and they have been my favorites bc she is such a good lecturer. She is clear about what information is important to know for papers and tests and good at explaining concepts and making them interesting. She brings in a lot of examplesfunny stories about her kids that make lecture fun
Took ANTHRCUL 101 fall 2014 with professor Peters-Golden after seeing all of the great reviews...I can't be happier that I did! She is an amazing lecuturer, and is hilarious as well (her judge Judy impersonation is spot on). Great class to take as an elective, have to write one paper for the class, but it isn't hard.
Best lectures I've ever experienced in my four years. She's hilarious, clever, witty, and has amazing anecdotes. I'd take it again. I'd take any class she taught. I LOVE HER. I'd hang out with her. Other than that, the class material is extremely interesting to me.
Holly Peters-Golden is one of the best professors here at Michigan. Anthro may not be the most interesting topic, but she makes her lectures fun and keeps the students engaged. Oh, and not to mention she gave all of us 100% on the final because they printed the wrong one. She's as amazing as it gets.
She is an amazing lecturer; she always has funny, interesting stories related to the topic. A lot of the course material is vague, boring, and abstract, but Holly can usually make it pretty interesting. Don't buy Kottak, and try to stay on pace in Culture Sketches. Also, attend all lectures because there are always lecture specific test questions.
Gave the whole 400 person lecture a 100% on the last test!!!
Because this was an intro class, a lot of the course material was common sense and repetitive but she was able to make it interesting and funny in lectures with her animated storytelling. There is a decent amount of reading (2 textbooks and a separate ethnography) but if you stay on top of it, you will be fine.
No need to read, simply go to class and for the test find a quizlet online that someone has already made and study that. For the essay, as long as you write a structurally sound paper you will get an A; I spent about 3 hours writing it and got a 99%. Definitely a good class to take because it's an easy A and satisfies the RE requirement
Prof Peters-Golden is an amazing lecturer, and makes boring topics fun to learn about through her stories and examples. If you go to lecture you really don't need to read Kottak, but it's a good idea to skim over Culture Sketches. If you know how to write a standard 5 paragraph essay and memorize vocab words, you'll get a good grade.
She is amazing especially because she forgot to print out our final exam so she gave us all 100%
Class is interesting but you find yourself constantly struggling to takes notes on everything she is saying as there is no way to distinguish what you need to know from what you don't . Powerpoint slides would be SUPER helpful, but are not available. Grading is extremely subjective and most of the GSI's this semester are pretty tough
I was really excited to take this class but it was a major letdown and grading is super subjective as people have mentioned. Holly is awesome but the class lacks in consistently covering meaningful material. Still helpful to those wanted to go into medicine nonetheless
She only teaches the honors seminar every other year, but if you get the chance to take it, DO! Readings are extensive but very interesting so you want to do them anyway. Seminar style is awesome, and a great break from the usual school grind. Easy easy grading
Anthro 101 with Holly was the right choice. Tests are easy, if you memorize the study guide you will do well. I didnt do any of the readings and memorized the information from her book before the exams and got an A. Take 101 with Holly, you wont regret it
I had Prof Peters-Golden for 101 and it was great, so I was excited for this class as well. The lectures themselves are interesting, but the exams and papers are so open ended and subjective that everything is based on your GSI. Mine was terrible, and gave no rationale for the harsh grades he gave out.
Lectures are more like story time which is great, but makes them hard to follow and takes notes on. This makes studying for the exams hard, so get to know your GSI for help and clarification. The two papers aren't horrible, but the exams are all essaysshort answer. Lots of reading, but you can just skim and be fine.
The professor lectures well but it is difficult to know what to pay attention to for the exams. Although the professor is fair and really nice, your grade is dependent on your GSI. The essays are really open ended, there's no grading rubric. It is disorganized. I got an A on both exams and ended up with a B because of the harshly graded essays.
Great easy class. Very easy to skip lecture or pay minimal attention then just cram for the exams. Pulled off B+ on exams even when I began studying the night before.
She gives funny lectures via personal stories to demonstrate points. For every exam you're given a study guide with every term you need to know, so if you study that you should be fine. I didn't even open the textbooks until we got the study guide, otherwise your reading stuff you may not need to know. Some things on exams pulled right from lecture
Seems pretty nice i didn't go to lecture much and didn't have much interaction with her. The workload in the class is very small. Your grade will completely rely on how strictly your gsi grades. The one paper is very easy just write a standard 5 paragraph essay and you'll get an A
Loved Holly's lectures (the ones I didn't skip). Grade COMPLETELY depends on GSI. They grade your exams, term paper, and section. Exams varied in difficulty so you didn't really know what to expect. There are exam questions about lecture examples so you have to go or you'll miss easy points (my mistake). Overall not a terrible class.
Holly was a great lecturer, she presented the material with funny personal stories which made it easier to remember. Don't read kotak, just the culture sketches. Your grade kinda depends on your GSI because they grade the tests (Sheng Long is awesome). 3 exams with a specific study guide for each as long as you study you'll do fine.
I LOVED Holly. I actually looked forward to going to Anthro in the midst of all my other classes. She was super fun and entertaining and made the material interesting and applicable. Discussion sections were pointless, though. Read her Culture Sketches, maybe not Kottak.
She is a good lecturer, but overall the class was a disappointment. As others have mentioned the grading is very subjective and depends on your GSI. The material covered in lecture and section was often inconsistent and the material constantly felt all over the place. Definitely has the potential to be a better class.
Holly is a good lecturer. Honestly, you don't even have to read - ESPECIALLY not Kottak because everything in it is sufficiently mentioned in lecture. Culture Sketches is not all that necessary either tbh because there are quizlets online with everything you'd need to know for the exam. Save yourself $100+ and don't buy books for this class. Easy A
This professor goes off on a lot of seemingly random tangents and shares stories about her life, but usually they relate back in some way and are mostly entertaining.
My GSI was the worst so that may be why it was so hard for me. But the lectures were way too long very boring and the tests were way too long MY had felt like it was going to fall off by the end
Professor Peters-Golden definitley has a passion for what she does. A lot of people loved her lectures, but I found most of them boring. Her "slides" are just pieces of paper projected onto the screen that are very confusing and lacking a lot of detail. If you are interested in Anthro then definitely take her. There is one paper that is super easy.
The class is quite easy. I didn't read anything; culture sketches, getting ghost, or the textbook and I got an a on the paper and am doing well in the class. Her lectures can get a little boring but aren't necessary to go to if you have a friend who can get the notes for you. This is a good grade booster four credit class.
Professor Peters-Golden is kind and enthusiastic about her job. I showed up to pretty much every class, did not read the textbook, and am still getting an A. There is one paper on a book, but I know people that got an A without reading it. Easy A as long as you study before the test. Would recommend if you want an easy class with a fantastic prof.
Would recommend to any engineer fulfilling IB credit. Lectures aren't dry, she makes them very interesting. I attended lecture 50% of the time, went to discussion every week, never did readings, and only studied the day before the exam for 2-3 hours. Also started my paper the day it was due. Ended up getting a healthy A. Easy A, don't P/F.
I went to a total of 1 lecture (the first) and for obvious reason. It was so boring and the material is so dry and makes the students so indifferent. If you attend lecture you will be fine, but very GSI based so hope for a good GSI. if you put in some effort you'll be fine. Easy scheme just study with people and get the notes about the movies.
Do not buy the textbook and maybe skim the culture sketches. Even going to lectures isn't a huge deal other than about one or two multiple choice questions on a test about a movie. Attending and participating in discussion sections is 15% of your grade so do that. Comprehensive study guide, so basically if you cram hard you can get the A.
She's really interesting, and I liked her lectures a lot. You don't really have to go to lecture to pass, you can just read the book, but I always went because I liked hearing the stories she tells in lecture.
I really enjoyed this class. We had three tests and a paper for the section. The amount of reading is very reasonable and very easy in general. A very good class to take for majors and non-majors alike. I took it in the first semester of my freshmen year. It was a breeze.
Prof. Peters-Golden is PHENOMENAL. Her lectures are so entertaining-- she is engaging, funny, and clearly passionate about her job. I absolutely loved this class and would take another with Prof. Peters-Golden in a heartbeat. Very manageable workload and she lectured in a way that made me actually look forward to going to class. I can't say enough!
Definitely not as easy as the other anthro professors. If you are taking this class for an easy R&E, take it with someone else or P/F. Easy B+, will make you work for it if you want the GPA boost.
Pretty clear lecturer. Tests are a little more specific than the other sections, so if you're looking for an easy A and dont want to go to lecture take them, but if you just go to lectures (dont need to do readings) you'll be fine. Her lectures are pretty interesting, and if you take basic notes w/ examples you should be able to get an easy A.
Peters-Golden is by far the most annoying professor I have ever encountered. I don't know how she has such a high rating. For the lecture on Primates, she brought in a Curious George stuffed doll and continued the entire lecture as if it were one of the books. She's patronizing and her stories are obnoxious. The lectures were painful and cringy.
Kind of annoyingly rehearsed lectures, but she tells good stories and gives you all the material. Read culture sketches for the tests, but fairly straightforward exams. One paper assignment off of a chapter book you read on your own.
Lectures were boring & I feel like I learned nothing new, but dont expect to skip lectures & do well on the tests unless you put in the time to study (from Quizlet, review sheet, discussion notes, & readings). I got by without the textbook, but needed Getting Ghost for the essay & the Culture Sketches, which appeared in written questions on exams.
Holly Peters-Golden is by far my favorite professor I have ever had. I have taken 3 classes with her, and loved all 3. She is so wise and intelligent, and her stories make class so much fun! Everyone who took this class was sad for it to end, and wished we could take it again! All you have to do is read and participate in discussion everyday
She clearly was interested in what she was talking about, and she had plenty of personal anecdotes to help explain the topics. Make sure you go to class though, because those anecdotes may appear on the exam. Exam 1 was difficult, but she and the GSIs made a conscious effort to make the next two easier and better prepare us.
BEWARE: No longer a blow-off class!! Go to lecture, take notes, utilize the GSI-led exam review sessions before each test. Tests are straightforward and fair, but grading is very picky on the short answer and essay sections.
Professor Peters-Golden is a super involved and entertaining lecturer! I think she's caught onto the fact that her class is thought of as an "easy A", so tests were more difficult than expected. If you go to lecture and listen, you can really get by with just studying the day before. Never used the textbook, but get the novel and culture sketches.
The format of the class takes some getting used to but I grew to love it. Every lecture felt like Dr. Peters-Golden was just kind of telling some stories but in a good way. You absolutely have to attend class and take good notes because there are no recordings or slides to look ateverything is verbal. Exams are not bad at all if you pay attention.
Peters-Golden is one of my favorite lecturers at UM. Doesn't use slides, which takes getting used to, but class involves a film every other lecture, which is great. Graded based on a paper, 2 exams, and section. Tells great stories and has a wonderful sense of humor. For a 300 level class, workload is SO manageable and interesting. Must take class
I can't say enough good things about Prof. Peters-Golden. VERY caring and wants her students to succeed. 258 is a seminar on culture and medicine. Prof P-G is VERY knowledgeable and imparts intellect when she speaks. Accessible outside of class and willing to help. Definitely take 258 if you're pre-med. Good background for culture & biomedicine
Dr. Peters-Golden is amazing! So eloquent and funny, and her lectures and films are usually pretty interesting. Something to be aware of though is that this is a very lecture heavy class, where important concepts aren't always on the overheads or mentioned. It takes some getting used to but overall very insightful class would take again.
Professor Peters-Golden makes every lecture interesting and has a ton of funny anecdotes that she ties into every class. There is a review sheet for each exam, which helps a lot. Also, you can get by without buying the textbook, as long as you attend the lectures.
Professor is really interesting with her lectures and its clear that she cares about her students and about anthropology. It's really fun listening to her stories and then actually seeing them on the test. She tries her best to make things interesting for us. I was actually sad on the last day of lectures!
Professor Peters-Golden, is amazing in class. She delivers informative and interesting lectures through a story telling method. You will no doubt do well by just attending lectures. Peters-Golden is super inspiring but be aware. You will be graded on few things. Additionally, her overhead slides are very simplified. SO DO NOT SKIP CLASS!!
Dr. Peters-Golden really knows her stuff on anthropology. Her lectures are incredibly funny and she is a very engaging speaker. You can do well in this class by simply attending lectures.
Very talented speaker. Attendance isnt mandatory but im constantly inspired to listen to her teach. Important to note that you watch a movie/documentary for like 40% of lectures. Exams are not super easy (almost entirely short answer) but are still pretty fair
Honestly, her Medical Anthro class is amazing. You don't have to go to lecture but I go every week because its so interesting and you actually learn a lot. You also watch a lot of movies but they aren't bad and you do get to know a lot about the world.
Holly Peters-Golden is by far the highlight of my freshman year. Not only are her lectures interesting and engaging, but she gives a study guide for each test that outlines exactly what you need to study and every test adheres to it. She tells amazing stories that relate to her lectures and she is truly an amazing speaker. She's the best!
Her lectures were very clear because she would show on the projector bullet notes of what she was talking about. In addition, you didn't need to go to her lectures to pass but she definitely made the concepts more interesting by putting her own twist into them.
Amazing professor. Her culture and medicine seminar is truly amazing and is a must-take for any student interested in a pre-health path.
Holly is the best professor I've had at UMich. She cares so much about the topic and is always sharing super interesting anecdotes. I recommend this class to absolutely everyone. It is so eye-opening and every lecture is very interesting. After taking this class I decided to minor in cultural anthropology.
Lectures aren't mandatory but going really helps because she puts specific examples and funny stories along with the concepts.
Prof. Peters-Golden is an amazing lecturer. You don't have to go to lecture but I strongly suggest you do. It helps with the exam and she's really funny. The exams are also easy if you do the study guide.
Prof Peters-Golden is amazing! Her lectures are awesome, but skipping one every now and then is fine and readings are not super necessary. If you have an interest in anthropology or need SS credits, take a class with her!
PG is an AMAZING professor. Lectures in 101 were interesting and enjoyable. Her stories are funny/relevant (and occasionally appear on tests!). Strictly follow the review sheets for the tests - know everything on it well, but need to know nothing else. Discussion sections useless and paper is rough but would still highly recommend 101 with PG!
I dont know how she has such a high rate but 344 was awful. Her lectures dont make any sense and neither do the notes. Even class lectures, the things she is saying dont make sense. The exams are reasonable but graded VERY harshly. If you miss a single word you loss all the points. Material was really interesting but HATED THIS CLASS.
Good professor who made the material interesting and relevant. I often found myself looking up class material on my own due to how much I liked it. Easy class if you actually take lecture notes and do the readings
Professor Peters-Golden was amazing! I took her class remotely due to COVID, but when I listened to her recorded lectures, I felt like I was sitting right there with her. She tells amazing stories, and she engages her students to think about the material in a relatable way. I would encourage everyone to take her class!
I loved taking Anthro 101 with PG. She was very accommodating in changing the number of assignments and tests with COVID. Other classes were very stressful being online remote, but I never stressed for this class. The lectures were very interesting and I really enjoyed the discussion section with the GSI as well.
This professor was really nice during her pre-recorded lectures. The course was relatively easy if you put in the bare minimum amount of effort. Our online section did not have exams, however. The content was somewhat engaging but can be dull. I think the course has a reputation of being easy which it certainly was. Great for your RE course
Dr. Peters-Golden is my fav lecturer. So sweet and funny. An amazing story teller and keeps her material and lectures applicable and interesting. I highly recommend Anthrcul 344 but I had her for Anthrcul 101 too and all of this still applies. If you are interested in anything health related- take this class!! Her assigned readings are great too.
Very interesting class. The professor makes the lectures interesting by incorporating personal stories. She gives you notes/outlines on all her lectures. Weekly responses are pretty easy (you don't even need to watch lectures to answer them - just use prof's notes). Participation matters for discussion sections. Had a meh GSI who goes overtime.
Much harder than the other section. Unnecessarily so for an Anthro 101 class. A lot of reading and the study guide is not comprehensive at all.
I had Prof Holly online, but still thought she was an excellent professor. Super nice and you can tell she cares about the subject material. Would take her class again!
Class was hybrid, but holly recorded her lectures and they were great. Doing the readings aren't super-necessary, but still good. Make sure to fill out the study guide from what she says in the lecture and youll be good for the exams. I wish more profs were like Holly!
Graded just on 3 tests, plus some discussion posts and participation in sections. Although she requires you to buy two textbooks, one of which she wrote, you don't actually need it for the exams. She also gives study guides, which covers all exam material, but her actual lectures are a bit boring. Class was hybrid so never got to actually met her.
