Very enthusiastic, very nice, enjoys her profession, good class
Nice, funny, & enthusiastic, but expects a lot from the students.
for every letter spelling mistake she took a point! i was pissed!!! everything on my exam was marked red!

plays favorites, impossible to get an A
She has high expectations but is totally willing to help. Grades hard on homework but it prepares you for tests. tests are straight forward...she makes class fun if you already have a good grasp, if not spend a lot of time studying
Holly is a wonderful teacher who really cares about her students. After so many semesters of French, she still makes it fun. She is very fair and understanding. You are lucky if you get to take one of her classes.
She's really nice and cares ALOT about her students. Very helpful, I suggest to go to office hours. HELPS ALOT. Grading is decent. Not too clear on grammar rules, but she make the class FUN AND ENJOYABLE. Try her out. She's pretty cool!
Some reading, rarely homework, based on presentations...but they're so much fun. Speak up and get creative, she's great!
Pretty hard teacher, but fair and helpful if you go to your office hours. Not a great class, but not a bad one either
I've never been in a class where I didn't want to learn the subject.
Well, for those of you who think she is a hard grader - How do you think you learn a language? By showing mediocre knowledge and excellent grades. It doesn't work this way. Holly is fair. She demands a lot, grading accordingly. I strongly recommend he
outstanding professor! most knowledgeable about her subject that I've ever seen... I wish all were like her!
one of the best I've ever had. Take her classes if you can. totally enthousiastic and helpful. ya learn a lot!
Very enthusiastic. Just wish she was a good teacher. Hardly any HW. Oral group presentations. Vocab tests every week. I spoke less than in my french writing class.
Interesting theme; great teacher.
Horrid. You don't know your grade until after the semester is over and you can do nothing about it. She chooses favorites and unless she likes you, there really is nothing you can do about your grade. Unless she likes you, she won't help you either.
She's very nice and enthusiastic, but you don't really know what she wants from you. You have to do homework, vocab tests each week, and 4 oral presentations. Grade is not always what you expect, you can do better than you think you are doing.
She definetely has favorites. Hard grader. Not very willing to help. Funny in class, but not the best teacher. It's more review than actual learning. She's a perfectionist. Watch out!
Terrible teacher!! Stay away, plays favorites and doesn't give good feedback to improve, expects to already know what you're suppose to be learning
For 3 semesters in a row I've had the pleasure. upper div class is graded harder. 220 is easy street. But why are we rating her when there is no one else? Just go to her office hours and never say anything bad about French!
has favorites (the ones who talk good about her) and does not help AT ALL)
plays favorites, grades arbitrarily, you won't learn anything because she is only interestewd in her own ideas and LOVES to hear herself speak. doesn't hand back any papers until the end of semester, so you don't know how you are doing and therefore, make little (if any) progression. she sucks
Wild and energetic, but very quick paced. A LOT of reading and working on your own. Takes a while to get papers back, but easy/fair grader. Kind of expects you to already know french grammar. I suggest taking 210 to fulfill foreign language requirement instead of 201.
Fun class! enjoyed her up beat spirit! But youdont know your grade. Never get scores back from presentations you spend days working on. But I have enjoyed the class
very good teacher. she will do anything to help you unerstand the stories that you read. tests are easy if you read. not a lot of grammar. quizes are t and f questions, very easy. only bad thing is that she speaks very fast, if you don't feel comfortable hearing french, then don't take the class.
The begining is very intimidating, she wasn't very organized and she doesn't speak any english during class. But it gets easier, and she gives extra credit questions a lot. Basically, the less french you know, the harder it will be.
I thought this was a very good class. The work load was not overwhelming but the teacher makes you work for a good grade. Professor has excellent knowledge and presentation. I would recommend taking her class.
She's full of enthusiasm and knows her stuff. Made the reading fun.
This was the easiest class! A little reading, a few web exercises and a multiple choice exam every week on vocab. No written final or midterm, they are less than 5 min orals in her office. Don't be scared, just participate and be prepared(do the 10 min of hw you might have) and you'll do fine.
She makes class fun by trying so many different ways to helf us learn the concept, vocab, etc. She is also upbeat and very funny -- even speaking english with a funny French "zay talk like dis" accent.
You better really love the French if you are going to take this class. Book is very biased towards the French. Ransom is a decent teacher and very approachable.
She is a pretty good teacher. Lectures are fun because she is so animated and bubbly. Pretty easy class. Not a lot of work, homework is average. She does everything she can to help you understand the readings. You have to guess what your grade will be, because there isn't a way to figure it out.
SHe does not provide your grades, picks favorites. At times you think she never reads your work just gives you the grade she thinks you might get. You cant get around her so just stay on her good side.
The class compares French to Americans in every aspect possible. Started out interesting, but then I realized the book is blatantly biased toward French people. There was a presentation at the end of the semester and 3 short papers. Holly is friendly and helpful if you ask.
She's a very hard grader, doesn't give back assignments on time so you have no idea how you're doing in the class. She's reluctant to thoroughly review material before the tests b/c she expects you to understand everything from the reader. She's made belittling comments to students if they express difficulty understanding something in class.
Best French teacher out there. She does pick favorties, just make sure your one of them and you'll fly by.

really nice lady, but a little unorganized in her teaching style. hard to predict what was important to know for tests. if you took time to go to office hours she would do the best that she could to help but if you did not learn from the same book previously you are kind of left in the dust because she assumes that you know all of that info already
Very nice lady, she's knowledgable. Homework is assigned twice a week. The class is well paced.
The class is fairly easy if you like French and if you do homework assignments on time. Need to be careful because she tends to be very mean if you aren't one of her favorites. She does seem to grade you based on what she thinks of you and not on your homework.
Holly is a good teacher. There is a lot of homework but that comes from the department requirements. She is very energetic and funny but sometimes doesn't explain things that well. This class is hard, any language class will be. You won't die if you get this teacher, she really wants you to learn French and a lot of work is probrably the best way.
Holly is really nice and fair. There are quizzes (online & in class) & labs practically every week that are required for the dept. but the online quizzes are easy points. She's energetic and offers extra credit, can turn in assignments late. 3 exams, including the final. other instructors taught our class briefly, and I recommend Holly over them.
She was the most active and inspiring teacher I've every had. She made french seem extremely interesting and was always energetic and bubbly. Compared to all the grumpy professors I've had, Holly was the TOTAL opposite. Kind, caring, and even persuasive on test dates. :) She teaches in a very understanding way and is totally kind and AWESOME!
Holly is one of the best teachers I have ever had. She is so amazingly inspiring and makes you never want to miss class. She is very enthusiastic and involves you in every lecture on the readings. Reading is required and she can tell if you haven't read. Not to worry, the reading comes with practice. Take Holly, she will make French 201 worth wild
Holly was my favorite teacher. I took 100A with her and then wanted to take 100B with her too. Her explanation is perfect and clear. She is funny and was very inspiring to me. Tests are basic, so are the quizzes. If you stay focused you'll do well and she is very helpful. I highly recommend her.
She is my favorite professor at SDSU. She really loves the language and teaching. She's very animated and helpful. Attendance is mandatory. Going to class will also help you a lot if your French isn't that great.
Great teacher. Class is somewhat difficult, just an expansion off of any SDSU french 100a class. She keeps your attention. She will help improve your understanding of french. Will gladly help you, easy to get a hold of.
Great teacher, very passionate; she loves euro studies and will make you, too. 424 is a film class so you have to attend, but she makes it interesting. Moderate homework, but not difficult, fair testing and grading. I would look for more classes with her if ES was my major.
A wonderfully kind professor who truly knows her stuff. Unfortunately the class moves at an incredibly fast pace. If you miss one day you might as well drop the class because you'll be world's behind. Difficult but she really is a solid professor.
Great professor, knows her stuff! Super cute!
Spoken French. Very lively and brilliant professor. Class is based on participation so answer questions as much as possible. She's a drama teacher also so she looks favorably on students who to speak up in class. Great person and very helpful; she knows several languages, very knowledgable in literature, French culture, and European history.
Excellent teacher! Very funny and kind! She made the quizes and exams easy.
She is an awesome instructor! This class is very difficult, but she makes it as gentle as possible. She is super fun, but clearly brilliant. Ask her to tell you fun stories about the Middle Ages. Super cool and smart.
Holly is a great teacher. She is always willing to help if you go to office house and wants her students to do well. Super enthusiastic and fun. I had her for 3 classes and loved each one!
Great teacher, very enthusiastic and fun! She is always willing to help if you go to office hours. She wants you to do well. If you haven't taken french before the class will be difficult, but manageable. 12 quizzes, lowest dropped. 3 non-comprehensive midterms and a comprehensive final. Online homework w/ 3 chances each time.
Take her for any French class, you won't regret it! She's super energetic and funny. Also, go to class! I personally didn't take notes, because I learn language faster by just listening, but you really won't notice the time in her classes. Weekly homework chapter assignments online, takes 3 tries, total of 11 quizzes plus final, lovely professor.
TAKE HOLLY. She really cares about her students and wants them to do well. The homework is all online so you can work with friends on it. 9 in-class quizzes and the lowest gets dropped. 3 exams that cover three chapters each and a cumulative final. You need to show up to class or you won't be passing the class.
I absolutely love Professor Ransom! If you do not get something in class, go to her office hours! She is always willing to help and genuinely wants her students to do well. Pay attention in class, do all the homework, participate and you will pass. This class is not an 'easy A' course but I would definitely recommend taking it with her.
This was my first upper divion french course and I was really scared. She made this class easy, understanding, fun etc. I loved how she tries to be theatrical, I cant wait to take her theater course
Very hard class, not knowing any French this class was a struggle. I thought there would be some lee way for it being French100A, however it is difficult right off the bat. I studied hard for tests and still didn't get good scores. Would recommend trying to take a different professor if possible.
Passionate about the material being taught in class, cares about you as an individual, really easy class, very little homework, no textbook, one midterm and one final exam.
An excellent professor & very passionate about French! Sure, French is taught right away in the class and it may be difficult. The course does move very quickly and there are a lot of tests and assignments. If you want an easy language class, this might not be the easiest when it comes to workload. But I enjoy her enthusiastic teaching every class
What can I say, she is an amazing french professor. You will never feel lost in the course. 3 exams, 4 translations plus homework which you correct yourself, she gives you points for doing the homework. Its for learning purposes so dont cheat yourself and copy the answer. Cant wait to take her French 304 Phonetics course
Ransom is a great and passionate professor. She truly works with you to make sure every student gets the grade they deserve. I struggle with French but I respect her because she is always willing to help and knows I am putting in the effort
Professor Ransom is so enthusiastic and really wants her students to learn and pass. She is so kind and grades the tests reasonably. Being a language class, there are obviously many tests, but she prepares you well for it by giving examples similar to the tests. Homework is online and helpful. I definitely recommend her class.
Not going to lie, this is a tough class. Any foreign language class can be a drag at times, but Holly is literally the best choice to have for an instructor! Enthusiastic, loud, high-energy. You learn a lot more effectively when you're relaxed, and this professor makes sure you don't stress over learning French. You will not pass if you don't come.
Ransom tries her best and was liked by most, but she just wasn't my type. She tries to be funny and is very loud which I just found unnecessary. Besides that she is a good teacher and definitely taught me a lot about French, but something that really bothered me is that her grading is really unclear and doesn't update blackboard much.
This was an amazing course. Linguistics is an interesting field and Madame Ransom is really knowledgable in the phonology branch. I would recommend anyone to take this class with her. Your French speaking skills will improve. You will notice why certain words a pronounce. Specific way etc.
I felt like the entire time I was in this class I was honestly annoyed. She had way too much energy, at times it felt like she was yelling to us like children. We barely did written or speaking work. What I remember most from this class was her talking at the front the entire time in french and showing videos. Did not help at all.
Mme. Ransom is a really great prof! Some people are say she is too "high energy", but when you have to come to class 4 days a week, I think it's a good thing that she is so energetic. She is so sweet and her teaching methods make learning a new language easier. Not a lot of hw, tests are very straight forward. Allowed 5 absences.
Love professor Ransom! Clear, helpful, and I learned a lot! I wish the class involved more speaking in french (presentations are supposed to be in French, but most people didn't do this). The grammar book is used and all the homework answers can be found in the text.
Prof. Ransom is so sweet. She has a lot of energy and is very passionate about french. I have struggled with the foreign language req., but she helped me a lot and was very encouraging. I recommend taking the class credit/no credit if that's an option for you. It takes A LOT of pressure off - allowed for me to get a C but still maintain a 3.75 GPA.
She seems really nice at first but then you get to know her real side after a couple of weeks. You can see that shes over it and pretends to be all dramatic in class. Retiring or teaching less classes should be an option for her.
This class was really difficult as a hybrid, and she definitely could've organized the lectures better. However, she is super helpful and accessible outside of class, and genuinely wants her students to succeed. It isn't an easy A, but she was a great professor
I've had Prof Ransom for 301,302, 304. She is the bomb! She is super personable and is willing to help you out on anything you need help with. And honestly she was the best, even when I was highkey all over the place in my life. Take her!!! You won't regret it. She has office hours and her tests are straightforward.
Worst class ever. She pretends to be a French native and likes to complain about students. I heard that she does not have PhD. She definitely needs to get one so she can teach this class better. My roommate took prof Benaglia last semester and she was amazing. I should have waited for her.
Love her and her energy. I feel like she really cares about her students and is passionate about her job. It sucks that I can't experience her lectures in IRL but i still appreciate the online class. I am a beginner in french and i feel like she goes tooo fast for me though.
Worst French professor at State. She hardly lectured and she expected us to know to do a lot of work on our own. Asked her how French people make animal noise she had no idea. I though she was native but Iguess shes not
best professor I have had at state, French is a hard language, I recommend not taking it if you can, but if you have to/really want to she is the best. you can tell she really cares and tries to make class fun, she's always smiling and has great energy. She's very considerate, I missed a lot of in class assignments and she let me make them all up
Honestly one of the best professors I've had. She's so caring about her students and just wants you to succeed. She makes it clear what you need to do to do well and makes every class engaging and not dreadful to be in. If you show up and put in the work you'll be fine, especially if you want to learn. If you're taking French definitely take her.
She was my 1st french teacher at sdsu, she was amazing! Lectures are engaging & helped me step out of my comfort zone which rly helped my french. I wan't afraid to make mistakes in class & she rly values participation! her lectures directly reflected the homework & quizzes. I skipped a few classes & I was able to catch up.1000% recommend taking her
This is a 5 credit class, so you'll be meeting twice a week and have LOTS of homework. The hw is easy just time consuming. If you show up to class, do the homework, and participate, you'll get an A easy. Prof. Ransom is one of the best French teachers, you will end the semester speaking MUCH better than how you started. I recommend this class.
I am halfway down with the semester and the homework doesnt match what we learn. The homework is harder because we do not learn it during class. The professor doesnt make class interesting and some of her power points have grammar mistake.s
I did not like the structure of the class. The professor was not understanding and expected student to self teach the material. It is a 4 day class cut into 2 days so you do a lot of the work on your own. I was disappointed because I had my RWS class next to her office and at times I would hear her complain to someone about students.
I loved Professor Ransom! I found the coursework very easy and straightforward. She does a great job of explaining concepts in class. Every other week there was a very low-key quiz, one-sided, typically with extra credit at the end. The final was very similar to the quizzes from class. Participation counts in class, but it's not too hard.
The class was not easy compared to French 100A. The professor tries her best to teach the material but we never have enough time to review grammar and vocabulary. At times it seems that we are rushed and running against time to learn every single week.
This teacher sort of assumes the students know everything and teaches WAY too fast. Literally everyone in our class was confused all the time because of how little detail she would give. I was in one of her French classes, so only have her as your teacher if you're very confident in your french
She races through material super fast. A lot of unnecessary passive aggressive bullying. She screams in German randomly. Kind of made my language learning experience miserable. Her philosophy is that she went through a tough and mean education as a child and seems to be passing on tradition.
I was excited about this class, but the professor always rushed through the material. She did not go over the material in detail, and we were assigned a lot of individual work to learn independently. I recommend skipping this class or taking it with another teacher.
I took 2 years of high school French and I got A's every class. I always struggle with this teacher because she rushed through the material. I also noticed some typos on work and I told her and she just ignored me. We get deducted points if we make a mistake, we should both have the same standards.
Her lectures often felt rushed or off-topic so there was a lot of individual learning. She also was a very hard grader on homework assignments and tests throughout the semester. However, she offers some extra credit and tries hard to prepare her students for exams so they can get a good grade. There were no surprises on the exam material.
Attendance Mandetory. TONS of material. Ive taken French so I loved this class, but if it was your first time, this would be HARD. A lot info each class, and lots of outside assignments as well. Mindtap heavy, reading, writing, listening, and oral assignments. Final Exam is 5 pgs, but only 20% of grade. Can bomb final if ur grade is high @ the end
Prof. Ransom is a passionate French teacher who really cares about her students. The class is challenging but doable if you put in the work. I found Unstuck study and the textbook super helpful for study prep.
Show up to class, 3 exams, 1 group final project super easy (you write a short story). Exams are mix of grammar and review on films you watch in class. Participate in class and get to know the teacher and you'll get an A. She wants you to get an A and if you don't mess around she'll get you right. One book you need from bookstore.
I love holly, she is the best French teacher I've had so far. she really cares about her students and she tries to help everyone actually learn French. there is a but load of homework but that's with any French class; you do have to participate but going to class is key. when you participate she doesn't make you feel bad for not knowing things.
Madame Ransom is awesome! She is very knowledgeable, and I feel like I was able to learn a lot through her teaching style. Her lectures and notes make a lot of sense, and she is really good at answering questions and giving help
