Extremely easy, you only have to do 4 papers and read short stories. Very helpful. Is of Chinese decent and English is her second language, but she still can teach the subject matter. Is entertaining when making fun of stupid kids and slackers.
tough class, expect a lot, but very helpful
only graded on tests
Is not nice to all the students in her class. Over all i found her to be stuck up. I would never take another class with her again.
While the class is easy, she is a terrible teacher. She is exteremly hard on grammar and hates ideas that go against her own beliefs. Her accent is horrible and hard to understand - also dislikes certain students (strong minded females upset her).
She got her doctorate and forgot how to teach.

It's clear she wants you to learn the material. She has a tiny problem pronouncing her r's. Nice little tight body. Made it hard to concentrate on the material sometimes.
a great teacher, very passionate, want students to learn
I took Holly's classes years ago. I am sure that she is as helpfull and informative now as she was then. Good with grammer. I write professionally today and most of the helpful things I know I learned in Holly's class.
horrible teacher, very biased towards students she enjoys
I have vowed to never take a Shi class again. She is a VERY nice person, but a very bad teacher. Does not know how to explain grammatical concepts, assumes that as native English speakers we should already understand. Avoid her if possible.
horrible. if she doesn't like you she makes it known, sometimes in front of the whole class. she also does not like people (mostly females) with an opinion and a voice
She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She asks, "Am I right?" all the freaking time. Well, Shi, you tell me, you are the one teaching! Plus she singles students out and makes everyone feel very very stupid. I hate her class!
She's very flexible. Get on her good side right away.
come on people! The woman is hawt!!!! If you get bored you can just stare at her ass all hour, and im talking to you girls too. Lets you redo assignments many times over. But if all you can do is stare then there could be a problem
One class with Dr. Shi is enough to know that she is not a good professor. Her grading changes from test to test (which are insane!). She even told our class that the vowels are "aerou" (!). I really disliked her class.
I pulled an A in her class, but most of my friends pulled B's or C's. She always needs re-assurance from the class like previous posters mentioned. Most of the assignments were 3-5 page papers.
You people! She is the best! her tests are consistent and she has points next to every problem and there is no way that you don't know how it works unless you are stupid of something. She is so smart and it is intimidating. Be smart!
I love the classes I took with her. Yes, her classes are hard, but she is very smart and she knows the material so well. She has answers to all your questions and is willing to help. All you need to do is ask. Take her classes if you want to learn.
dont ever take her, im not saying this because she gave me a bad grade or something ill probably get a b, but she is a HORRIBLE teacher. Her assignments are a waste of time and shes very inflexible to people or ideas she doesnt like.
The class itself was pretty easy. there are about 5 papers, but she is a pretty easy grader. She comes off kind of rude, but she's actually very nice if you follow her directions and don't ****her off.

Yes, she is very nice, and the class is not that hard if you follow her directions. take it.
I can't stress enough the fact that she is a HORRIBLE teacher. I had a friend come in for one day and she thought that she knew her stuff but she was unable to teach it to the class. She came across rude and cold. We're in college... we're not 5!!!
horrible prof....the class wasent that hard....but it's definitly not worth taking for what you have to put up with.......she is extreamly judgemental and she picks favorites right away...she is an English teacher and can't even speak good english herself
Nice lady, but good lord -- hard to understand!! We basically had a party at semester's end and burned our books...'nuff said.
Prof. Shi is very straightforward, fair and consistent. She is also very willing to stay after class and explain further if you don't understand. Prof. Shi does a great job, I liked this class and the professor.
Prof. Shi is awesome! She is fair, clear, and helpful. Notice the negative comments are from Freshman - they have a lot to learn yet, and some growing up to do. If you do the work, read the chapters, and come to class, you will do fine.
DON'T EVER TAKE A CLASS FROM DR. SHI!!!!SHE DISLIKES CERTAIN PEOPLE FOR NO REASON AT ALL.......SHE IS VERY VERY RUDE AND HAS NO PROBLEM DISCUSSING YOUR PAPERS WITH THE WHOLE CLASS WITHOUT ASKING YOU AT ALL...SHE HAS HORRIBLE GRAMMAR...TERRIBLE PROFF
She makes the class fun and talks to us like we are humans. She funny and makes the class much more at ease. Take SHI and just do the assignments.
horrible
Prof. Shi's tests are difficult, but the grading scale is easy. She has the unfortuante position of grammer teacher, a class which is villinized at every university.
yes,her tests are hard, but she is easy in grading. She does a good job teaching grammar that most students hate. She is a great teacher.
WOW, hard class, cant believe i ever took it. Prolly going to drop out of school because of this class. But it was, she makes it very interesting and i earned an A.
prof. shi picks favorites and will give you a bad grade just b/c she doesn't like you!!! She says lots of words funny, and if she doesn't agree w/you, then you're wrong. I hated her class, and really her!! If she likes you then I'm sure you'll have it made... :(
Got an A in the class, but learned nothing. Pointless.
probably will get an A, but was a lot of hard work. She is a great prof.
Ok let's just say she completely plays favorites like someone mentioned. If she doesn't like you, it doesn't bother to even try. She doesn't even speak English as her first langauge. It was such a joke. I wouldn't take her its not worth your time at all.
she was very hard to understand when she was explaining on how to do things
she is very nice, one of the best professors. The assignments are easy and her web sites are awesome, easy to follow. if you miss something, you can go there to find out what you have missed.
Great teacher, class discussions are great! i learn a lot, and i hate eng. If not to sure on your eng. skills take her, she cares more about proccess.
okay i can't believe people actually say they like her...She can't say the word "idea".. it's IDEAR... so how can she judge student's grammar when she can't even pronounce words....
I spent every day in the class angry because she obviously loved the people who would flirt with her. She totally picks favorites and I honestly believe she based her grades on how much she likes her students. I get an A average and I got a C in this class. Though it's partially my fault because I was always way too frustrated to participate.
great prof- perhaps she will argue if she disagrees with you, but remember your place. she knows what she is talking about. her esl experience actual gives her an advantage in understanding the specifics of the language which we all take for granted. she may mispronounce some words, but trust me, she knows what she is talking about.
HORRIBLE CLASS... She's argumentative and lacks the ability to understand simple questions asked in class. I refuse to ever take a class with this professor ever again. I don't take issue with her accent or inability to enunciate, however, her lack of understanding in the subject hindered my ability to do well. She is somewhat attractive though :/
There are actually right and wrong answers in her classes. I don't understand why many simly don't get the stuff, they are not that hard. I really love her classes. I learned more in her classes than in any other classes. She is a great prof. take her classes if you are serious about learning something.
She definitely knows what she is talking about, super smart. Too bad that we don't h ave more courses in linguistics, I will take some more with her, or just with anyone in linguistics. caution: don't think you can get a decent grade without hard work in her classes. recommend her class highly.
the class is really easy. you don't do anything. it gets boring.
i dont like to use the word hate, but i hate this teacher. shes hard and confusing. She also needs to learn how to speak and understand english clearly if shes going to teach the class.
By far the WORST prof I have had at WSU. When I went in for help last semester she said, "Good Luck" and walked away after telling me not to study with my usual partner saying she didn't know anything. Tests are horrible and she prides her self on saying how hard they are. Plays favorites and not clear on anything she says.
If you are willing to put in a decent effort in this class you will do fine. The material is not so bad, but the tests are hard and pretty long. She does a good job of teaching the material it is just a matter of how much effort you are willing to put into learning it.
Pretty good at teaching, willing to help, but unclear on what she wants for the tests and for daily work. Easy grader on papers as long as it is clear effort was put into it. Easy to understand, comments above bashing her English are pretty ridiculous, her accent is not bad at all.
As a person, she is quite nice, friendly and generally interesting. As a professor, she is unclear, and quite inconsistant. Don't be suprised if she changes things up like no other. A warning she is a horrible grammar nitpicker. Just go to the writing center. She used the books Gang of One is intersesting. and the working poor boring.
Believing in herself too much
Prof. Shi is a tough but fair teacher. She is highly intelligent and doesn't spoon food you. People who hate her either aren't bright or aren't willing to work. But that's WSU for you.
She is a tough teacher, but if you work hard it'll pay off. Hard to understand because she is an Asian teacher teaching an english course, so her grammar is very poor but you eventually catch on to what she's actually trying to say. Grades papers tough too.
I had her for Syntax and she was terrible. She means well, but the fact that she's not a native speaker of English makes it difficult for her to explain things to students who grew up with the language. She couldn't understand complex questions and in general was rather clueless.
Dr. Shi is very disorganized but doesn't like to admit she was wrong, so she'll try to pacify you with unclear answers. She snaps at students who have too many questions. The lectures, exercises, and study guides have too many mistakes and inconsistencies in them to be helpful. Take Dr. Krase if you can.
She has no idea what she's talking about, and gives grammatically incorrect sentences to diagram. English Syntax was HELL. She's a nice lady, but a poor teacher.
Prof. Shi is possibly the worst teacher I have ever had. She is very unclear on what she wants in your paper, and when you ask her to be more detailed she makes you feel like a complete idiot. Her grammar is horrible. She openly admitted to not reading one of my papers and just gave me a "D" on it. She then read it. Get out of her class if you can!
Horrible teacher. Openly admitted to not ready one of my papers and tried to give me a "d" on it until I asked her about it. Get out of her class if you still can because it will be a long semester with her.
She's a nice lady, but so unorganized that it is a nuisance. Her directions are shoddy as well as her grading of papers. There is no way to know if you'll get a good grade on a paper, and it seemed like she never really read any of my work, but just skimmed over it. I would avoid taking her classes.
By far the worst professor in the WSU system. Extremely unclear in every aspect of teaching the english language. She teaches the english language and cannot pronounce half of the concepts she tries to teach. She openly admitted that she read the first paragraph of a paper by a student and disagreed with its standpoint and gave them a D. RUN!
I took her 111 course and I dont think she understood that the lower the class the easier it should be. She graded me and others from class like we were Ph.D. level. She is not well prepared for class ever and hardly pronounces words correctly for a full sentence. Not very approachable or helpful via email or office visits either.
years ago, i took her linguistics class. this stuff was way over my head. half way through, it finally made sense, and i got it through with an A. She was good, i mean she expected you to understand linguistics--syntax, but most students were not interested. they gave up and complained. My advice: take it from a prof who gives everyone As.
She is rather disorganized most of the time and expects to much of her students in a 50 minute class. Have to write a large paper, read two books, and do a video presentation for a 1 credit/half semester class. I recommend getting a different teacher if you need to take a English course.
I honestly didn't learn much at all in this class besides the fact that I do not excel at APA format. This was a writing course, and we didn't practice writing once; the only thing we actually wrote was the "Final Paper."
Prof Shi, while a nice person, is a rather unpleasant teacher. I have her for College Reading and Writing and the material she gives us to read is very difficult to comprehend. Making the papers you have to write all the more difficult. She can be helpful, but you have to push more than what's necessary when asking for clarification from a teacher.
Not the best teacher for this class. Was very hard to understand due to her accent and her worksheets were not always clear. Was very unorganized and really had no idea what was going on the whole time. Class was only a quarter long though and only had one 8 page research paper due at the end of the quarter which was a plus.
She sometimes words things funny because English is not her first language. The class itself wasn't very tough, you write 3 papers and there is not a midterm or a final. There were occasional quizzes on the reading that were due but they were not hard if you did the reading or simply just used spark notes right before class.
Very high expectation to students. A lot of course details are higher than neccessary for just being student. Be ready to read two textbooks before come to class. Online Quiz everyday with writing assignment. Prof is not Native English Speaker, and prof has few idea to teach English as second language. No holiday for homework and email from prof.
Difficult to understand with her accent but the class was decent overall
Dr. Shi means well, but she forgets just how much she assigns to her students for an entry-level class. There have been points in the semester where I turned in a paper, started drafting a new one, read two chapters from two different books, prepped for a quiz on those readings, and did an online assessment. That was in one day.. high expectations!
Actually, I'm from Asain. I came here to study English, how come it's Chinese teacher. It's really a bad professor that always tells us to do some group assignment and wasting time. Useless class .
She didn't even be prepared for the lecture, always let students do the assigned group work in class.
I loved Shi's online class. There is always feedback on your work. I would set aside an hour or two for this class every day.
Terrible Teacher that is very hard to reach outside of class and gives no help when trying to fix your writing.
She is literally the most difficult professor at WSU. THE MOST DIFFICULT!!!
I loved Dr. Shi's online class. She is very organized and makes it easy to understand what needs to be done. I ended up putting maybe 2 hours a week into this class.
She gave me a D on a beautiful written paper because SHE didn't understand it. She claims she gave it to another teacher to grade as well, but I bet that was a lie. She teaches an English class but she has no sense of creativity. I've read the "A worthy" papers. They are AWFUL. "I played dice with my family. It was fun." That's an "A paper"
I took her for a completely online class as a junior in high school and I thought it was fine. If you just do your work you will be fine, she seems more strict than she actually is. She is open to emails and always responds. Sometimes the work is confusing or the quizzes arent descriptive enough but I just emailed her about it.
Her quizzes on the readings are extremely specific, but you can look back on the text if you need to. Although they are specific, the questions can be vague and confusing. She refuses to give 100% on anything; the highest you'll get is a 90% usually. The final paper is optional if you did well on everything else, so I guess that's a bonus.
She is one of the worst graders I have had as a professor. She never gives 100% and I felt like sometimes she would create ways to doc points off. You have to read a lot and there are a lot of papers but the final paper is optional. There are two textbooks that are free online. The quizzes are extremely specific and she will try to confuse you.
Very unforgiving with late work. Grading for papers is not clear. Rarely responds to emails or questions. Provides reading material for the class. Quizzes on reading happen often. Class discussions on D2L happen monthly (pay attention to start and end dates for EVERY assignment). Has a road map to tell what is due on what days weekly.
