A tough task master. Very demanding but good.
Not a very good teacher makes learning to difficult
expects alot but you learn from this class.
finds the most difficult way to teach something
Willing to review progress before assgnmnts due to make sure you're getting it.
Seems like a tough teacher at first.Turns out he's a real softie & very helpful
heard he's great from my friend, i don't need him i'm 120 styling
the worst teacher i have ever had. I have a 3.7 gpa and his is the only class i have ever droped.
You'll learn quickly that his quizzes all have a certain pattern. Figure it out & improve your grade. Big Padres fan & heavy smoker. Never saw a student win an argument with him about how a paper was graded.
Lectures are interesting, but an extremely tough grader.
Very tough with papers. Easy quizzes - they have a pattern. This is the only English class I've ever gotten less than an A in - very disappointed in his style and grading.
Horrific teacher, he sucked the life, beauty, and interest right out of the dynamic realm of mythology. He growls out the most worthless lectures for hours; i can only imagine that he gets some sort of fulfill by talking to the audience of himself.
Hypercritical professor. You must completely (and I mean completely) clarify your arguments if you hope to even get a passing grade on your essays. He gave me Ds on essays that other professors would have given me As & Bs on.
This was during the summer and very tough, but I passed! Mr. Lusk is intersting, but the work is hard! A lot of reading!
Worst teacher I have ever had!!!! Do not take for grammer!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He is hard at first-but you realize it IS for your own good. He is a great teacher!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! lusk is a conglomeration of all that is bad about teachers. his grading is malicious and arbitrary, he enjoys giving bad grades. he's BY FAR the worst teacher i've ever had.
The man is terrible. He can't explain what he wants in an essay to save his life. I've heard really good things about him from previous students but I fail to see what they saw in him. This semester, fellow students I've talked to agree.
If you don't want to actually think for yourself...then don't take him. Imagine the nerve of a teacher to actually EXPECT college students to have emotionally graduated from HS! He knows mythology completely; I found his lectures fascinating!
While entertaining us with his Sean Connery-esque demeiner, he proceeded to barrage us with some of the most difficult tests that I have ever taken... and they were take-home!
good teacher
Fabulous teacher, if you want to learn something. Very helpful if you ask for help
Awful, awful, awful, has good intentions but is expecting a bunch of graduate students in his class. Did learn good stuff in the lectures, however weekend papers were a nightmare especially knowing it was going to be an automatic D anyhow.
He has the most entrancing voice,it makes a night class fun.Took all 12 of our quizes home. On essays he gives a C for doing them, you can make it up.His class changed my whole perspective on life.Easy C, pretty easy B, kinda hard A.
Even though english is my second language, I love his class. He cares about the students. It is a lot of work, but at the end learning takes place. Excelent professor.
grades very difficult but he is a good teacher
eassy quizzes with open book. will learn grammar and get a good grade
nice guy,but not a good teacher. can't stop smoking and drinking coffee.expects way too much.if he likes you and wants to c you do well he'll give you books to read so you can't BS his essays and there are NO take home tests!!
Another class that has changed my life. I have moved on to SDSU, and I want to say that nearly every teacher here wants essays done the way Prof. Lusk does.
Good teach! Pro-student. Hard grader. Class hinges on final(do not have any fragments or run-ons). Will work with you on anything, and you can learn alot. Definitly recommended.
BEST teacher I've ever had!! He's extremely intelligent, REALLY knows his subject, very understanding and helpful, entertaining/witty, quizzes are takehome, no tests. Just don't use passive verbs on essays... very interesting lectures and humorous quizzes
Great Class, good teacher, however do not write in all caps, or he WILL give you a zero. That's the only disagreement I had with him. For the take home quizzes, look for patterns!
Tireless lecturer, knowledgable. Clearly unifies world myth. Injected wry humor. Listen to the lectures and pay attention to movies, to make sure you can get max points on take-home quizzes. Personable. Joseph Campbell & the Power of Myth rocks!
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. His grading is unfair and he is unclear. He grades essay's very hard and will not help you understand what he wants. His class started out with 45 students, by the final six were left, all with a c- or lower.
I'm taking his class now and he seems to be a great teacher. Although he smokes to much, he's still a damn good teacher and offers to meet you before class to help you. Always be sure to make an appointment!
WORST TEACHER. I guess if you can understand hic-language, go for it. Mumbles and never actually reviews ANYTHING. Originally our class was full with like 40 people, but at the final, there was (NO JOKE) 7 people left, including me.
Just the best teacher
Lusk is one of the best teachers I've ever had. The tests are easy and the class is interesting. Ok, the movies suck, Bill Moyers is the most annoying man ever, and the papers are HARD. GO TO THE WRITING CENTER, you'll need to. Mythology is a great class
Lusk is a terrible teacher! The worst I have ever had the misfortune of meeting! He mumbles everything! He grades VERY unfairly and hard. No matter how many hours you put into your papers, he is still able to make you feel like a loser.
Avoid this man like the plague!! Please, Please take another literature class. This guy is worthless! He knows a lot, but he can't teach worth a damn!
This class is HARD because he fails you on every paper you turn in and the lectures are nearly impossible to survive. He seems like a nice guy, but not the best teacher, students dropped like flies throughout the course... no one can blame them!
He is one of the hardest graders. I'm not sure how I am going to do in this class because of his grading, and there was SOOOO much work. I felt overwhelmed because I had another summer class and work. Takes lots of outside time, nice but not on paper.
Stay away from this teacher!!!!!!
Yes I passed the class but he made it seem like I was lucky to have and that because I have other priorties besides this class I am somewhat an idiot for taking this class. Don't take it for summer school that's for sure!
I didn't think he was THAT bad.....I managed to get a B. He does seem to show his opinions too readily on the papers you write. I found him interesting.....
The worst English teacher I have ever had. Wrote his own book and expects you to teach yourself. As long as you show up for quizes and turn in your essays on time you can pass without even showing up on any other day. I managed to get by with a C.
Don't take his class if you want an easy class. Take him if your ready to learn everything about English, Literature, or Mythology.
Understanding and helpful.
Eng 101: makes class fun and interesting, always there to help with extra work and help if you aren't understanding the material.
easy if u actually study, straight forward, but hard to talk to, doesnt understand that student are slower in understanding things
He is a very good teacher. His classes are hard but he expects you to learn (duh). If your not very good at English(essays and such)I recommend not to take the summer course.A lot is crammed in, in a short amt of time.He is very helpful and he will help you till you understand.Great teacher.
learn to write how he likes his essays!!!!
This teacher is HARD! Don't take him! Stay away! The guy wrote his own book and wants you to teach yourself. He expects A LOT of writting, I use to love to write but not anymore. This guy turned me off to english...i USED to want to be an english teacher. STAY AWAY FROM LUSK!!!!!!!
I stayed in his class as long as i could put up with this teacher but i could not stand how he would go off topic as often as he did and i was failing because i did not understnad a thing at all and i did not like how he wrote his own book, it was so poor.I felt like i was suffering. I droped it.
He was not a very good teacher at all. Also very boring so it makes you not want to learn.
When he lectures he mumbles. Hes hard to understand, unclear, and explains things to you as if you already know it. Hes hard to keep up with.
Take his class if your an English major. He's perhaps the most respected English instructor at Grossmont College. He knows damn near everything. Be ready for a challenge.
Great, funny, extremely intelligent guy. Really loves what he is teaching -- if you do too, you will love the class. If not, he can be a bit hard to follow. Wants exactly what he wants out of essays, but you might as well get used to that. Will let you write optional assignments instead of essay
If you're interested in improving your English, this is the class. My advice to anyone who takes this class is to do your homework, study, ask questions and be there. He IS the most knowledgeable instructor.
Mythology course was so...unclear. I don't remember/don't want to remember a thing from that horrid class.
Mythology course was extreamly fun and EASY. Covers what the book talks about and is very fair on the essays he gives. I take more out of his classes than just the class material. Extreamly GREAT teacher not to mention unique
I took the mythology class last semester. The quizzez can be hard so do them in groups and you'll have no problem there. The essays can be somewhat challenging as he likes it his way. I got an "A" in the class and he is lenient you get to redo essays but make sure you nail the sonnets if you decide to them. Overall great teacher for this class
He is a great teacher, though he expects written work to be done his way. Very fun, informative, and overall enjoyable class. I still find myself referencing the information learned a year later. Have to work for the A, but it's definitely worth it.
He made no sense and belittled those who asked questions. please don't fall victim to this teacher, don't say i didn'ty warn you!
Hard class and prof. This is not a class to take if your objective is to pass with a "C" and with almost no effort. I think this class is entended for those who have a genuine interest in learning true Lit. His classes are a rare apportunity for true learning as well as very easy to FAIL. I got a "c" anywhere else I could have gotten an "A".
Honestly, I thought he was pretty easy. Just as long as you read the material. I liked his teaching style, although we'd get off topic often. The material was wonderful...a lot of short stories instead of one massive novel! Made it easy to keep up.
Unfair about stupid stuff like writing in all caps. Tests were for the most part easy, extra credit was difficult at times. Overall good class, and he's cool even if he is unfair.
He took a great subject and sucked the life out of it. Papers need to be done his way (not standard). He mocked those who asked valid questions, which in my book makes him not worthy of teaching PHYS ED let alone literature.
this guy gets a bad rap. . .the only reason y ppl fail his class is cause they dont TRY hard enough. quizzes are super simple and always have a pattern, and u get so many chances to rewrite ur papers before ur final grade its not funny. . the only down fall is that he dont like the verbs "is" and "are" in papers, but hey, nobody is perfect.
He is one of the best professors in Grossmont college!
I agree, he is an awesome teacher. I got a "C" in this class but, is the best c ever, worth an A of knowledge. great professor.
This class was not what I expected, but it was a good class. Mr. Lusk rambles through his lectures and sometimes it is hard to see where he is going with it. The book is so boring but his tests are based on the lecture. I find if you do the quiz right after lecture you will get an A, since it is not something you can look up later. GOOD TEACHER!!
Amen on the boring textbook, but Mr. Lusk himself as a teacher was pretty awesome. I think to do well in his class, the only thing you have to do is put forth a bit of effort & follow instructions. Piece of cake, really. :D
Mr. Lusk was great. Some of the videos wernt that great...but otherwise superb teacher. Listen to what he says, and you will com out feeling better in general. His essays are easy to graps, and the quiz are beyond simple. Easy, enjoyable, and educational...Who would have thought that could happen?
I had Prof. Lusk for Fantasy Sci-Fi Literature in the early 90's. Great teacher, fun class, but no cake walk. Remember, you are going to college to learn, and that requires actual effort! He is one of the few teachers unrelated to my chemistry degree that I remember well.
One of the best English teachers I have ever had. He gives you the textbook and he has broken down concepts of English so that anyone can understand them.
Mr Lusk is a very good teacher, he really wants you to ask questions and come to his office hours even if he doesnt say so. All his quizes have a pattern to them so as once as you figure out the pattern for each individual quiz you are good to go.
Mr. Lusk is a good teacher. At first it is real hard to understand him, but once you actually listen you begin to understand. He is very scarcastic at times but i find it funny. I like how he doesnt move on until everyone understands. He offers extra credit and learning becomes real easy if you go everyday and really try to learn.
Lusk grades your work scientifically and marks down unnecessarily. It is not so much a literature course as it is a sharp wrap on the hand for not standardizing things correctly. The emphasis is misplaced, and consequently, his students gaze around the classroom bored. I've earned only A's in my other 6 English classes, here I'm hoping to pass.
He is so hard to follow! He mumbles and the notes he writes on the board are important but illegible. I had never received lower then a B- on a paper and I didn't get anything higher then a C-. He doesn't answer any of your questions!
Homer Lusk is a disappointment. I missed the first day of class due to a personal obligation that I had to follow through on and he dropped me. He has NO compassion and no desire to listen. If you have children or put your family needs first, he is not the teacher for you.
Lusk taught my first college English class ever, and that first (abysmal) essay grade certainly shocked me. But his comments made me a much better writer. He's really tough, but ultimately very fair. I learned a ton from him, both in terms of writing and narrative history (mythology in this case). So I say if you have the moxie, then TAKE HIM!
He is a teacher who doesn't care what you have to say but why you say it. If you are able to actually pass his class, you will not only be a better writer but also a more savvy individual about both mythology and history. If you want to get ion good with him just like Shakespeare & Milton
he is such a helpful teacher but one problem is that he is a tough teacher. for a 2 hour class he tried to make it less dreadful by saying interesting facts and jokes about other people, funny about english yet it helps all the way. if you want an A dont take this class, but if you want to learn take him.
he is very hard to understand he mumbles most of the time and doesn't explain how he want things to be done. he is big on attendance too.
I took him last fall 2012 for my English 98, and my experienced with him as my professor was great. He is very knowledgeable. He seems like a walking dictionary as he knows everything about english world. He doesn't require us to buy book as he makes his own book for us to use the entire semester. I have extremely learned English because of him.
Lusk was the most inspiring writing coach I ever had...correction "cheerleader". That was my experience, yours may have differed.
In the classroom, he is very difficult to listen, understand, and overall just know what he's trying to say. And when you talk with him outside of class, its not all that much better. Also, on the papers he assigns, no real clear explaination on what he wants to see in it. Overall, he might have been better suited for History than English.
Mr. Lusk delivers the ultimate amount of support needed to aid his students while also encouraging their self-development. He provides thought provoking lectures that use the English language to connect the scholars of yesterday to the students of today. He requires the student to put in the work. Nothing is given away here, its earned.
Great professor! Learned a lot. Just read the text, ace the very easy quizzes and write your papers.
I have always received A's and B's in every English class I have ever taken and after taking this class I faced my first failing grade. He's unclear, unfair and critiques everything you have to say, giving you a harsh grade you wouldn't expect. Save your GPA and do not take this class.
I took this class thinking I could handle it. I was wrong, he is the hardest teacher I HAVE EVER HAD. He isn't clear in what he expects us to do, he doesn't care about the students because he's getting his paycheck either way. I study and study and but somehow its still not good enough. I wish I would have never taken his class.
He is a really tough teacher... I don't know how I passed but if you truly want to understand the material he is teaching you should take him! you will learn a lot! but if you slack offnot try you wont pass. He is passionate about teaching and wants his students to understand the material
If my grade doesn't improve I will be forced to drop the class by the deadline. His only office hours are an hour before class. He doesn't provide an email or return voice messages. He goes off on tangents about world history instead of teaching English. His instruction is unclear then he rips my papers apart. I don't know what he wants.
I took him for English 103, it was back in the 80's, hard to remember. Liked him a lot
Very hard to understand. Very boring! No visuals ( powerpoint or posters)! Sooo confusing! Makes it harder to understand what is going on
Mr. Lusk is a very passionate teacher. However, if you are not passionate about your schoolwork, there is no way you'll succeed in his class. Yes, he lectures long, but his lecture ties everything together if you pay attention. He's here to help you, but if you don't ask for it then it's your fault. He greatly appreciates participation.
To pass his class, you really have to work hard and study. He is a very helpful teacher and will help you out with anything whenever he can. This is a class you must attend every single class period. It was hard in my opinion, but if you are good at sentence structure and essays you will do great!
Professor Lusk, while a very intelligent man forgets he is teaching to students and showboats his vast wealth of knowledge while teaching at his students. I luckily passed this class being the only class I have ever struggled in. You must show up to listen to his wild tangient "lectures" or you will not pass.
He is very off topic during lectures and expects you to learn from a booklet. He speaks very quickly, sometimes hard to keep up. Hard to reach outside of class, poor hours. We started with 30 people by three weeks there was only 12 left
TAKE NOTES! He's hard to follow sometimes. He gives you all the opportunities to improve you have to take them. We ended the semester with 6 people showing up to the final. Tough grader, this is not an easy class.
He goes over homework ONLY! Gets a attitude when asking for help. Very hard grader. Checks EVERYTHING. Make sure to write in pen or your grade will suffer. You do not get graded for showing up. He lies about certain lessons to see what you know. But, also tends to go way off topic. Make sure you have taken grammar and greek mythology recently.
Let me start by saying that this class is not for the faint of heart. Lusk is an intelligent professor, whose personality and humor isnt for everyone. He often displays his vast knowledge in (extremely tangential) lectures. Theres a heavy workload and tough grading. However, if youre willing to challenge yourself and get help, youre bound to succeed
I graduated from Grossmont College in 1998. To this day, Homer Lusk is one of only three professors that I remember. He was a great teacher and challenged me intellectually. I received the highest grade in the class, which was a B. I took him again for two more courses and received a B and finally that elusive Homer Lusk A. It was worth it.
Homer Lusk is retired and does not teach anymore I took his classes back in the 80s and 90s whereas I didn't do too well I did like his style and communication skills
