He truely cares about his students. He is a great help when you need him, but dont blow the class
He really cares about his students' success. He is a bit hard to understand but he's a really friendly person. Great professor! His finals were hard, though.
He is very helpful.
Sometimes he can be a tid hard to understand but it has not kept me from learning, he is a GREAT professor.
Extremely funny, and does a great job of explaining concepts. His tests aren't too bad either.
Very kind and competent. He speaks perfect English but if you're the kind of person that can't handle accents, you'll probably complain.
I loved this prof. Yes he can be a little hard to understand but he is thorough. I loved that he knew my name after only meeting me once. When I went to his office he was always very helpful. He is one of the few profs that actually care rather or not you know the information and pass his class. I definitely recommend him to others
I hate chemistry, but thanks to professor Hong I had a semi-decent time in this class. He is very clear, loves his subject, is knowledgeable and fair. Also he is so cute! I would not say "hot", because he is not my type, but he is def cute.
He is very friendly and helpful but I don't think teaching is his calling. He is very knowledgeable but could be more clear in lecture. He obviously takes his job very seriously. Tests are manageable if you put forth some effort.
Zhao was one of my favorite professors. Yes, his English was not perfect but you could easily understand the most of what he said. His notes were extremely good and he genuinely cared about the students.
Dr. Hong is such a caring teacher. And he really wants students to succeed. I would definitely take his class again. I still HATE chemistry, but at least now I understand it.
Dr. Hong is a great professor that loves teaching and learning. If you don't do well in his class, you probably didn't try.
Great professor! Like someone before me said, if you didn't get at least a b in his class, you didnt try!
A truely good person, very intelligent, you get at least a B if you do the work, and you will learn chemistry! Just remember "durta" means "delta", and "frakwensee" means "frequency" and you are fine!
I found professor Hong to be a very dedicated, passionate, and adorable professor. He really cares about his students and will be more than happy to help you outside of class. His lectures can be fast-paced though, so you have to pay attention. But otherwise, if you do the weekly HW and pay strong attention in class, you should get an A/B.
Dr Hong is among the best professors out there. You can tell he cares about his students, and has a passion for teaching. You may think all the online hw and quizzes are annoying, but they help you learn the material. His exams are very fair, and if you did your work and came to class, you should do well on the exams.
A great professor. Sometimes slightly hard to understand. Very passionate about Chem and loves helping students out. A great guy. Try hard and do well. Meet with him for help.
Wonderful man!
Hong keeps the class interesting. As a teacher he is fine. He is funny and speaks English very well. Being at lecture is important. My problem was that I was no good at chemistry. His sample tests are helpful. The final destroyed me though; got a D on it, but still made out with a B.
The class itself is easy, but he was not a very good teacher for it. You can tell that he tries to explain things, but he cannot communicate well. Very monotonous.
This class is basically review from highschool chemistry. The recitations are helpful if you do not understand the material and Dr. Hong is very helpful during office hours.
Solid nice guy and unlike some others, I had no problems with his accent. What I did have a problem with was his skipping over some important material and the sheer amount of work that he expects in order to succeed: this class will consume your life! Recitations of little help but easy points- you will need all you can get!
Not a fan of Mr. Hong for multiple reasons. As a personal thing he cannot admit he is ever wrong and his class is very meticulous. He expects his class to be the only class you have while in college and it has been one of my most expensive classes. He also release slides with blanks on them but skips slide 8 at a time so u cant get the information
Dr. Hong tries to make Chemistry harder than it should be. He's very hard to understand with his thick accent--making it even harder to learn chemistry. There is a ton of work for this class, as if it's the only class you're taking. The lab that goes with this course is also demanding as far as work goes (C125).
He is very nice and forgiving, but just difficult to understand. if you do not have much experience working with accents, this class is not for you. his is very difficult to work through, especially when rattling off long chemical names and elemental properties. I attended EVERY lecture, but I learned everything in Recitation. Enroll with care.
Although his lectures weren't horrible, you'll definitely get your best learning done during workshop/recitation. Online homework takes about 2 hours each week, and tests are harder than the study material.
He is helpful when you come to him and ask him some questions. In the lecture, it seems hard to understand the materials, but when you do the homeworks and the quizes, online, it gets easer and understandable. the best thing is that you can have another chance for each exam.
My fav. professor! I love his teaching style. Attend class, recitation, do mastering chemistry, weekly LearnSmart (20 extra credit), and do the practice exams and you will get an A. He has a good grading scale! His practice exams are basically his exams.
Probably the best professor on campus. This guy is awesome.
C105 is challenging, but as long as you attend class, do all of the homeworks, and actively participate in workshop you should be able to pass with a B. It happens to be a very time consuming class, so be prepared to put in the work. I would have never gotten an A if I hadn't read about every chapter in the book.
Ive hated chemistry since high school, so as I started this class as a freshman, I was closed minded and hated every second of it. Now that Im finished, I hate chemistry less because of Dr. Hong. He IS a hard professor, but he is nice, forgiving, and if you study and do the practice exams, you will do fine..Just don't wait until last minute
One of the best professors I've had. He is very approachable and forgiving. His class is awesome and his accent is not bad at all. Btw those that say his is a "hard" and "meticulous" class, unless this is the only life science class you have to take, drop whatever you want to do now. This class is EASY!!!
Dr. Hong is my 2nd favorite teacher and is VERY approachable and helpful. His accent was different at first, but definitely not as strong as other teachers. Lectures were generally easy to follow. The workload was heavier but manageable and extremely helpful - Dr. Hong really won't assign it unless it truly helps. Many extra credit opportunities.
This professor believes his class is the only one your taking in college. I only took his C125 chemistry lab and it was only worth 2 units. However, I ended doing more work for his class than other classes that were worth more units. Even though I did every experiment and assignment I couldn't pass the class. I tried my best but it didn't matter.
Easy class and the professor is also very helpful if you attend his office hours. Do his practice exams because the are very similar to the actual test and also attend lecture!
Dr. Hong was great! He really wants his students to do well and is always there to answer questions. His accent is a little thick but I rarely had trouble understanding him. I did well in this class because of his helpfulness. He is a great resource to have so go to his office hours and get to know him. He never forgets a name or a face.
Dr Hong is a really nice professor, he will try in any way to help you & get to know you. So i recommend going to office hours or staying after class, this ensures a good grade. However, this class had WAY too much material & he gave way too much homework which took over 2 hours. I would only take this class if you will work hard 24/7
Dr. Hong was without a doubt the best chemistry professor I have had to date. I highly recommend his class.
Dr. Hong is such a great instructor. He is so funny and really is passionate about helping students understand the material. He puts so much time into the class and it really shows. Many people complain about his accent, but honestly there was never a time when I didn't understand him, he is really clear. He is super awesome and one of my favorites
Dr. Hong has been one of my favorite chemistry teachers at IUPUI. Although, his accent is thick if you are focused he will be easy to understand. He really cares that his students succeed and his office is always open! Great teacher! Nice guy!
The class is tough, but he is a nice lecturer and tries to make everything fun for the students. He provides all of the resources students need to succeed, however even then the class is difficult. The tests are tough but not impossible. I would recommend taking C101 prior even though you tested into the upper level course, I know I wish I did!
Dr. Hong was a very good lecturer if you like a lot of examples. Exams 1 & 2 are very calculations based, but exams 3 & 4 and the final are pretty conceptual. He is very clear about what you need to know for exams. Lectures are pretty interesting most of the time. You definitely need to attend lecture and recitation (most of the time) for an A.
If you ask questions he will take the time to answer. May kind of put you on the spot a little. 2 hrs can pass quickly in the testing center if you're checking your work. There are online assignments every week. If you miss some it's not too bad. *Work on examples from the book, it REALLY HELPS. There are Clicker questions for participation.
The class itself isn't so bad. Just make sure you get your free points in recitation and Mastering Chem and you'll be fine. He's such a nice dude, though. Very respectful and understanding. Accent was played up a little bit dramatically before I took the class. I thought he was very easy to understand.
Dr. Hong is the best Chemistry Prof at IUPUI for C105. Take his class, not the others.
Dr. Hong is amazing! I loved his class so much. With all the extra credit, you will pass easily with an A. He gives you the points you deserve based on how hard you work in his class. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in his class and I will now be taking him for C106!
Great professor, one of the best I've ever had. He does a great job of explaining tough material for the exams. The exams are not as bad as everyone says, but definitely do the practice exams and self evaluations if you want to do well on them. He tries to keep the class interesting even if the topic isn't.
This was his first year teaching 106. He's a great guy and really loves his students, but has no business teaching 106. The tests are nothing like the guides or practice problems. Test averages were failing grades. He gets confused in lecture a lot, which confuses all the students. Nguyen handles recitation grade, so you have to deal with her too.
I have had Dr. Hong for C105 and C106, and I can say that, in C105, he really shined as a teacher and his students did well. In C106, however, he was new to the material and had little time to prepare, so he adopted Ms. Nguyen's notes and wrote his exams just as unnecessarily difficult as hers. It's clear that she runs the show. Still he's so nice!
As well as being a great professor, Dr. Hong is very nice and sincere. This was his first time teaching this class, however, I thought that he did a great job at explaining the material. Attending his office hours was incredibly helpful for me.
Best professor at IUPUI hands down!Dr. Hong's lectures are effective, reasonably paced, and helpful especially when preparing for exams. He is committed to helping his students perform their best but expects hard work and dedication hence the difficult exams. He's willing to help during exam jams and is welcoming and patient if visiting office hrs.
The quizzes are ridiculously difficult, and usually kill your grade. There is a huge exam about halfway through the determines if you pass or fail. The experiments are all explained in the manual. Your success depends on what TA you get. I had Tanner, and he was great. Very helpful in lab, and a generous grader.
Chemistry was super hard for me, Dr. Hong is a funny and great guy but I personally did not learn well from his lectures. He is different for everyone. I read the textbook a lot because I didn't understand lecture. Lab is only necessary for some students, but it was the hardest labs I've ever had.
Super nice guy and very accessible. He's definitely a good person and he really knows chemistry. But his tests are very hard and they don't make a lot of sense and are quite a step up from the preceding class (C105). He would be one of my favorite professors ever if his tests weren't so hard and made more sense.
Don't take this professor. His tests are horrible. They don't make sense. He also gives two tests and most often one is harder than the other so if you have bad luck oh well. The guy is nice and teaches but you can't win on the test at all even if you study.
Dr. Hong is nice and usually is able to provide help when you are confused on a concept. His tests are hard to make sure you have a thorough understanding of the concept, so its both a good and a bad thing. He explains concepts well in lecture. Be sure to do optional credits , as they increase your understanding even more.
I enjoyed going to lecture. Dr. Hong was very funny and made jokes often. I took AP Chem in high school and this class was a breeze. He does go pretty in-depth over course material, but I never thought that the tests were as hard as what we did in lecture. As long as you do the Mastering Chemistry assignments and practice exams, you will do fine.
Coming from someone who did very well in C105, Hong's class was more than just difficult, he does not teach the concepts how you will need them for the exams and constantly talks down to students who don't understand. I spent hours outside of class studying, felt great going into the exams, and would literally fail. I would NEVER take him again.
This professor is very nice and sweet but his teaching style me be a little unorthodox. His expectations for the class are too high. On the behalf of half of the class that received a bad grade, do not take C106 with this professor!! He makes his exams more difficult than they need to be. Take this class with nuygen!
When it came to 106, it was brutal. His test required multiple corrections during the exam. He would stop the exam to explain where he messed up and expected us to know how to answer the question even when it was wrong. His grading is all over the place for exams. DO ALL EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS!!!! Lets just say his class made me hate chemistry
worst class I have ever taken, makes the class way more difficult than it should be, average for every test was a 50%, lecture is pointless and you will learn more reading the book, if you can take this class somewhere else I would
Dr. Hong is one of the best professors I've ever had. He explains things really well till you understand it. The exams are fair compared to how well he prepares you for it. Do the prelecture readings and assignments, do many practice problems, ask good questions in recitation and officer hours, and you'll do well in the class.
Dr. Hong is extremely caring of his students. Always willing to help. He is a great lecturer and covers a very broad amount of information. He designs his exams to cover everything you have discussed in lecture, along with what he told you to read in book. Be ready to study because exams are tough, but he does a great job TEACHING you chemistry.
Dr. Hong is one of the most caring professors I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He wants all of his students to succeed and always makes himself available to help his students. The course is not easy, but if you follow his suggestions you will do well. Read before lecture, participate in recitation, go to office hours, do practice problems!
This is Organic Chemistry it's not suppose to be easy. The exams were hard mainly because you have like 12 multiple choice questions and 6 free response problems, which are lengthy. When he sees his students work hard and struggle, he wants to help them. He really cares about his students. My advice is to read the textbook &go to his office hr
Professor Hong is never available to respond by email. He doesnt have clear grading. He makes the material way harder then it needs to be. Only thing good about him is he curves the class a bit. Take this elsewhere.
Orgo with Dr. Hong was challenging. His multiple choice questions were ridiculously difficult. ACS final was a piece of cake, just run-through the ACS study guide and you should be all set for the final. Also, go to office hours if anything is confusing. Dr. Hong is extremely kind and helpful. Also theres tons of partial credit. Good luck!
Dr. Hong is a great professor and knows his stuff! Makes it very clear on DAY 1 that you will have to earn your grade so be prepared to be studying at least 5-10 hours a week if you want an A in this class. I was not very successful in general chemistry, but I loved Orgo 1. The horror stories are true, it's hard, but not if you work for it.
A great professor. Always available during office hours. I would recommend that you make an appointment and show up then for any doubts or questions, as other people take up a lot of time asking questions on material he explicitly stated in lecture. Tests are easy if you study. Don't expect to pass without at least 3-4 hours a week and attend class
I absolutely loved Dr. Hong and Orgo 1 with him. He is one of the most caring professors I've ever met - he is literally always available, I stopped by a few times outside of his office hours, and he was always happy to help and answer my questions. His tests aren't easy, but if you work hard enough you'll be rewarded, I promise. Attend lectures!
Dr. Zhao made lectures fairly interesting, but he was hard to understand occasionally. There's a lot of homework that comes with this class, and you will need a lot of time outside of class to study if you want a good grade.
Dr. Hong tried very hard to be a kind professor, but his class was not structured well. We had "key skill assessments" where you did 5 problems and either got 5 points or 0 points- no in between. He also was unfair on his grading at times- giving partial credit differently to students. I do, however, like his curving and grading scale. He's subpar.
Dr. Hong is hard to understand and teaches very weirdly. I retook this class and he taught different ways of doing things than my original professor did- and they were harder ways too. He is not the best teacher for organic chemistry and you should take someone else.
Not a great prof. His tests are strange- the multiple choice questions are harder than the short answer. He tests you over specific details instead of overall problem solving- which is what should be tested for organic chemistry. Also did not offer any office hours in the summer.
He's a good professor, but very tough when he thinks most bad students are slackers. I took it the first time with another professor at iupui, and got a solid C and failed miserably but attended all classes, but I took it in the summer with him scoring the same and also taking the lab which I should have only taken one thing and got D.
Extremely difficult, weeds out bad students, doesn't care if you are struggling but doing the work and just not getting it and going to class, shows no love when giving final grades if you are struggling please seek the other professor that teaches this class as he is very generous and will pass you at least if you attend all lecturesand do thework
Dr. Hong really wants his students to succeed. However, his lectures aren't the greatest and is hard to understand. He posts additional videos that just made me more confused. His exams are terrible, half multiple choice and half free response and oddly the multiple choice were harder. His class is curved which is nice but expect to fail the exams.
I was not a fan of his teaching style and he was very hard to understand. His exams are extremely difficult, the average being around a 50% but it does prepare you well for organic 2.
Welcome wannabe "pre-med" students to the first class you won't be babied in. Don't bash professors cause of your poor performance and lack of preparation. Professor Zhao is awesome is all I can say.
Dr. Hong is a very good professor. He really emphasizes textbook usage. He makes himself available to students often and he is very helpful. I had him as an Organic Chem professor and i would definitely take another class from him. Pay attention to the small things he says. coming to his lectures are the key to success!!
Organic chemistry is a really hard class, and you definitely have to do A TON of work on your own to do slightly okay in this class, but Dr. Hong clearly has the student's best interest in mind and explains all important concepts in detail to be sure everyone understands. Be sure to take advantage of his office hours and Friday tutoring sessions.
Dr. Hong was by far one of the best if not the best professor I have taken at IUPUI. If you speak to him a few times he will know you by name. He has very helpful office hours, and is always willing to help. He is obviously very passionate about chemistry as well. Organic Chemistry is a tough course, but Dr. Hong made it manageable.
(Orgo 1 Lab) Make sure to be prepared each week. Lab reports, in class quizzes, and 2 exams make up your overall grade, along with a bonus. Study hard and dont underestimate the exams, as they basically determine what you will get in the class for the most part. Lab itself was interesting and not to bad, youll do great just put in the effort.
Took half of his class in person and the other half online due to covid, his videos are annoying, long, and he says "UMM" every 2 seconds. He expects you to complete his exam by giving you like 2 seconds per problem. Took the ACS final over lectures from the WHOLE semester and scored way better than I ever did in any of his mediocre exams.
I will be honest, Dr. Hong is just too much. I took this class half in person and half online cuz of Covid-19. He is a tough grader and would not round you grade even by .1 points, did this with me. He expects you to know stuff before class which I think is stupid, cuz some students don't have time to read beforehand. His tests are overly difficult
Does not respond to emails. Cant explain anything to save his life. Attending lecture is a waste of time and he expects you to essentially learn half the material on your own. Every lecture he has multiple bullet points of things to learn on your own. Dont know how he got the job
He is an OK professor. I never attended a lecture, you are better off watching the pre-lecture videos, reading the text book, and looking at other resources. He has to correct himself a lot and I feel like you need more information for certain topics and he doesn't go in depth. Definetly study in order to pass because OCHEM is a different beast
CHEM-C341 is one of the hardest classes you will take at IUPUI, but it all depends on the amount of work you put into it. Go to every lecture as there is 6 points of ex credit if you go to class and Dr. Hong hints at possible exam q's. Exams are hard, avg around 50%, but class is curved by 10%. 25 MC q's and 75 points of short answer.
(Orgo 2 lab) Passing with a C- was a struggle. Lab was always missing equipment, only used a few pages from the 400 page, $70 lab manual, even those pages sometimes had incorrect procedures. Generally disorganized, would forget to post stuff needed to complete the pre-labs. Tried to be part lecture, had pop quizes. Maybe he should stick to Orgo 1.
This is a very difficult class. However, Professor Hong is a very good professor who explains the information well. Exams are extremely difficult so make sure to study well in advance for the exams.
Students need to understand that Orgo WILL be difficult at times. Prof. Hong does a great and thorough job at teaching material in ways that are digestible. He genuinely cares about your success. Office hours help immensely. BUT YOU MUST PUT IN THE WORK. THIS IS NOT A COURSE TO BE LAZY. Give it all you got and you'll do great! EC for attending lec.
Hong is great. He answers questions if you ask them and actually cares about his students. Do the practice exams and lecture probles as a way to study and you should do fine on the exams! Hong is great. The class is hard but Hong does his best to teach is well.
The professor told me that I was below average that's super motivating. The class average is around 40%, and the professors are okay with that. Dr. Hong spends 80% of the class complaining that the other professor doesn't know what's happening. Dr. Hong will start a problem in class, stare at it, and say I'm going to leave this to you guys. Awful.
Dr Hong actually cares about his students despite the difficulty level of organic chem as a whole. If you put in the work, rework the lecture problems, show up to class, and ask questions (he makes so much time for his students outside of class), you can be successful in this course.
I strongly do not recommend him. He doesn't truly teach, was always behind, and left most of the info to students to learn on our own. He claims chemistry is "common sense" and frequently made comments insinuating we were stupid. He is demeaning and unsupportive. The class averages on exams were never above a 65% (which is very telling).
Dr. Hong is knowledgeable on what's covered in lecture, however, most students including myself found his lectures difficult to follow. He can sometimes be insulting towards the class, but it's without bad intentions. To succeed, students need to be responsible and use outside resources to teach themselves chemistry. There's plenty of other points.
Overall amazing teacher, I got a bad grade becuase I didnt put in the effort, currently retaking it and doing so much better, however, I never changed proffesors. As long as you put the effort in to show up, it's a decently easy class to pass.
Dr. Hong is amazing when it comes to the orgo I lab! I had an awful TA so I did really bad on the final and should've ended with an A-, but Hong rounded my grade up to an A without me even asking. He lets you use a lot of resources on the lab final which is nice. Lab isn't bad, just make sure you get a good TA.
Barely teaches anything that is asked in homework or on quiz/exams. During lectures he claims things are common sense when they aren't. He also will start a problem during a lecture and say "This one I will leave for you guys to solve." when he hasn't even taught us how to do it. Also assign hours of homework that you have to teach yourself to do.
He's not the best professor, but not the worse. Where his lectures are kinda boring but does help when it comes to quizzes. TBH mastering chemistry and recitation is what gave me a good grade and by reading the book. The exam is somewhat hard but not difficult.
Dr. Hong was a funny professor. Many would say he was very condescending, but I would say otherwise. He was professor that did not sugarcoat anything. Chemistry is not an easy subject and it does not get anymore easier after 105, and he is just trying to prep you for that. His tests were 100% more easier than you would expect them to be!
Chemistry is a difficult concept, but Dr. Hong tried his best to explain everything. His approach of leaving problems for students to figure out wasn't loved by many, but I believed that working out problems myself helped me to really understand concepts. Can be condescending at times, but I think he just wants everyone to do well in his class.
I am currently in Dr. Hong's class and I have been losing hair due to the stress this man gives me. Whatever you do, do not take this class. He is a bad lecturer, and is horribly condescending, to the point that I would rather fail than have to show up to his lectures.
Dr. Hong is such a demeaning and horrible professor to the point that I am unmotivated to learn. You will have to teach yourself all of the material- his lectures are not helpful because he goes off on tangents and jumps from topic to topic with no warning.
Do not take his class unless you really have to. Very test heavy, Insults students, does not care if you are doing poorly in his class. Does not know how to properly teach
He is a great professor. He clearly tells you things that will be on the exam and what will not be on the exam. If you come to lecture every single time, you will do well. DO THE SELF ASSESSMENT QUIZES AND TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY. Some of the questions from the them are taken verbatim and put into the exam. Less than 50% of the class is exams.
I honestly wish he taught every class I'll ever have to take. Just go to the lectures and pay attention. He is also super nice if you talk to him. He is not rude or condescending to his students. He wants them all to succeed; tough love is his motivation. People don't realize that they are in college and that college courses aren't handed to you.
While this class is hard if you put in the work for it, you can pass. He makes it very hard to fail the class as there are so many free points that he basically just gives out. Do not expect easy from him. Though he is always prepared always give students feedback on exams if they ask. You use ALEKS OFTEN! Many false claims to be honest about him.
I found myself doing better in the class when I skipped lectures and took that time to study outside of the cramped room we did them in. It was very difficult to take away anything from his lectures. I also found him to be quite rude at times.
Dr. Hong is a good professor. This class is on the more difficult side but he wants to help students succeed.
You can tell he is used to teaching higher-level chemistry and that is where his passion is. His lectures are good, but there is a decent amount of work to do for this class, however, it isn't as scary as some make it out to be.
Dr Hong was very interesting. I thought he did a good job at explaining concepts and topics. He makes his exams like the self assessment quizzes and the practice exams. He may seem intimidating and scary but he's actually really nice if you go up to him after class to talk about subjects.
I never went to lecture. I didn't learn that much, so most of the time spent outside of class was watching organic chemistry to help explain what was going on and honestly thats what helped me. Definitely do all the extra credit assignments it will help boost your grade up at the end.
Truly not that hard if you take the time to really understand the material. All poor reviews are just coping from students who didn't want to put in real work and/or didn't take advantage of the copious amounts of extra credit. His humor can be blunt but don't take it personally and enjoy lecture.
This class is tough, but if you put in the work, you can pass. Use ALEKS and Unstuck study regularly for study prep - they really helped me get through the material. The professor can be direct, but stay engaged and you'll learn a lot.
Hong is nice but teaching isn't his forte English isn't his first language & as such has a thick accent some find hard to understand. Lots say go to class & you'll be fine, isn't entirely true. -jumps around topics quickly/abruptly -practice exams=similar to actual -doesn't fully solve out problems -clicker questions -online homework -notes heavy
Overall the class was difficult. However, I emailed him asking for a tutoring and she has been helping me basically the whole semester. I didn't attend class much but he does take attendance right when it starts. It is very difficult alone so taking it with other hard classes makes it worse.
Course is difficult but not impossible. Go to recitation, do the homework, and do the self tests/extra credit. Those assignments were curved very generously at the end of the semester, which helped my grade a ton, especially since I struggled on the exams. Hong may seem intimidating but is actually chill if you meet him in office hours.
Atrocious to say the least! He doesnt understand organic chemistry and should not be teaching it. At study session for the acs final and he got 90% of the answers WRONG. Do not take him for Ochem at all cost. says you get partial credit but you will almost never get it, hw is supposed to be by completion but he takes points off for wrong answers.
I took organic chemistry 1 & 2 in the summer. Orginally, Dr. Zhao terrified me with his high expectations and tough-love mentality. Every test over half the class got below 50% on the exams. Do not expect this to be you if you are willing to work hard and earn your A! Overall, Dr. Zhao is one of my favorite proffesors I have had and will ever have.
Dr.Hong is the best professor at IUI. People don't appreciate his "tough love" approach, but it's what makes him my favorite professor. An A in the class is possible and a fair shot for the people who try. Additionally, he is very approachable and always willing to help. He is also the only professor I have had who remembers everybody's names.
it was hard to follow him during lecture but going to him during his office hours or after class really helped me. I would advise if u take this complete all the homework as it boost your grade at the end, and find a good outside resource to learn material from.
I love Dr. Hong. Orgo is a very hard class anyways so pay attention and lock in. He curved my grade without me asking because he knew who I was from conversations with him. A super sweet and funny guy if you actually talk to him.
