Dr. Hall is a fabulous teacher who's in touch with both education issues and his students. His class feels more like an open forum for students to voice their opinions than a classroom. An excellent addition to the education faculty!
as a junior, i feel that prof. hall is by far the best teacher i have had at depaul...he is so in touch with his students that u could believe that he is one himself...i recommend him to every1....depaul wiuld not be a complete experience if u didnt take prof. hall
He is the reason why I'm still an education major!!!!
Prof. Hall is one of the best teachers I have ever had, he makes the class material real and relates in to your own life. You don't feel like his your prof. but rather a fellow student.
the best 3 hrs. a week you'll spend in grad. school. i've had dr.hall in 2 classes and he really knows his stuff. he's engaging, fun, helpful, real, and....oh, really nice to look at. i look forward to his 406 class in winter '05. i highly recommend him.
Dr. Hall's class is VERY easy, but it's so worth it because he is such a compassionate person. Highly recommended.
I agree. Dr. Hall's class is somewhat easy. I think because his teaching style is easy. He doesn't make learning the blood, sweat and tears alot of college professors seem to do. You'll learn alot too. Cool guy!
Being in his class was the best 3hrs of my week. He makes learning fun, he's clear about his expectations, the readings & books selected were very informative and interesting. Take him every chance you get.
Profesor Hall is an excellent teacher. He makes learning fun and engaging. He's a very REAL person and he is very open minded.I look forward to his class every week and consistantly come to him for his advice academically and Socially. If you took him you would praise him as well.A true teacher!
Hall is amazing! He makes learning fun. There was never a dull moment in his class! He allows his tsudents to share their personal experiences in class. He is really down to earth and you can connect with him! Great teacher!
I LOVE Dr. Hall! In the first class, it was hard for me to believe that he was the professor because of his youth and good looks....BUT, he later wows you with his passion and knowledge of the field of teaching. A must take course!! I'm totally inspired.
cant say enough good things. perfect example of a teacher who cares. teaches that teaching is all about relationships. he will not make u work hard - but he will inspire u, make u think, make u care about teaching.
Finally, a professor who challenges students based on not how much work they can do, but how much they're able to rethink curriculum issues and teaching methods. Take Dr. Hall as much as you possibly can. Simply AWESOME!!

What more can you say about Dr. Hall that hasn't already been said here. He's an inspiration to so many students I've talk to. He's my most memorable professor to date. Highly recommended!
Dr. Hall is amazing. Everyone always shows up to class because he's THAT good. He is passionate about education, and it shows. He rocks!
TAKE HALL!!! so cute, and so nice, and so friendly. Class is great. I agree, people go just becuase he is that great...i missed once and felt horrible. he is such a fair grader and his work is totally worth it. GREAT GUY!!!you will not be bored
He is the best teacher at Depaul. His class is very inpiring, he really makes you think about the curriculum and do good in class. He is very energetic and passionate about the subject. If you have the chance take him. you would be really happy.
Excellent professor! Enthusiastic, innovative, knows his stuff
I wish I could bottle Professor Hall for all my classes. He is an incredible person and influence on those of us studying to become educators. As stated by others, I did not miss class because I did not want to miss out on ANYTHING. He needs tenure NOW!! We covered some difficult issues, with many opinions and he managed to guide us with grace.
Dr. Hall not only brought high quality intellectualism to the class, but also an air of personalism. You can really connect with him. Yes, while he is good looking with a beautiful mind, he also has a wonderful spirit. Take him whenever possible. You will enjoy it.
Inspiring, brilliant, and engaging. Creates a great class atmosphere and is willing to seriously entertain multiple perspectives. Readings are manageable and discussions are plentiful. Class is fun and stimulating. Take his classes.
I really appreciate Prof. Hall. He's energetic and has a great speaking voice. After two morning classes, you need somebody who's going to keep you in tune. Also, Prof. Hall doesn't make you learn for him. He puts it on you to learn, he just guides. I only wish he taught more classes.
I loovvve Horace! Very passionate about what he does, the issues in Education, and his students. Great teacher, interesting class, and plus you won't mind looking at him for 3 hours!
This teacher allows students to rant and rave about just about anything making for just about nothing getting accomplished in class. At least you can find out the abitrary political views of his students. This class does not help you to learn anything that is to be on the final and he rarely teaches. It is either movies or classroom chaos.
Horace is the man. If you want a teacher who is fun and energetic, and actually CARES about his students, take him for a class. One of the BEST teachers at DePaul.
This professor is definitely one of the best I've had in my 4 years at DePaul. He's inspiring and in touch with education issues. If you take the group quizzes and readings seriously, you'll do fine on the final. Which is ironic because I took his class because I heard he didn't give exams ;-D
BEST TEACHER EVER!!! if you have to take SCU 337, take it with Hall. HE's great, funny, makes class very interesting and brings candy for his students. He knows how to push your knowledge of the subject and in a fun way!!
Very interesting class and professor. Our discussions were completely helpful to me as a soon-to-be-teacher. LOVED IT!!!
GREAT CLASS!! You really learn a lot about teaching. I felt like my head was going to explode some days, but in a good way. Dr Hall was really down to earth and fun. His rock star status @Depaul is well deserved. Two words-- TAKE HIM
best teacher i've had at depaul so far. he's really cool and laid back. his classes are fun, i actually looked forward to going to them. he doesn't do the whole boring-lecture format. if you read and give 50% in this class, and actually study for the final, you'll pull off an A or B. he might even be your friend after the class is over
it took me a while to figure out this class and the professor, but after a some time all i can say is "AWESOME!" dr. hall is fun, good looking and if you apply yourself, you'll do good. bottom line, you should take this class before you leave depaul. simply the BEST!!
He is one of the most enthusiastic and fun professors at depaul. And the best part is that he doesnt feel like a professor but rahter a friend. his lectures are never boring and is really a cool guy. highly recommended.
Insightful, fun and great discussions. Wonderful class and professor.
Most interesting class I've ever taken. Our class discussions were incredibly helpful to me as a future teacher. There are several readings and class quizzes, and a final exam choice of either a test or a creative arts project. Be prepared to think deeply and speak your mind. Overall, a decent course load and an amazing professor.
The only class I've taken @DePaul that truly encouraged me to think deeper about curriculum issues and about my own teaching practices. This class was wholly intellectual, reflective, energetic, and fun. Dr. Hall smoothly guided our journey.
By far the best ISP 200 class to take. Makes it clear what he expects and understands when things come up. Take him, it will make that class your best one for the quarter.
If you're going to take this class, take it with Dr. Hall. Its one of the only classes I was able to truly speak my mind in. I learned just as much from my classmates as I did from the prof. The work is manageable and Dr. H is a cool guy. He really respects your opinion. The class work is manageable and it makes you think. I recommend it!
what did i learn in this class?????? nothing- the guy thinks he knows it all but he doesn't know as much as he thinks... full of himself. What does he think that he is god's gift to mankind, or what?
Wow, I had Prof. H for 336 and it was an amazing class. Our ENTIRE cohort thought so too. We didn't just learn how to teach but, more importantly, how to connect with students. If you don't get anything out of Prof. H's class, you either don't read, don't think, or don't have a pulse. Great professor!!
Cool teacher...doesn't do the whole lecture thing, but still can be a little long-winded. I like Dr. Hall cos he puts students first in the discussion and he's nice to be around--awesome sense of humor! Take him, you'll see.
Great Prof. Few writing assignments, group presentation and a short final presentation. Just be prepared to listen to edu students whine about themselves, just like every other edu class. If you cant get an A in this class, youre hopeless.
Great professor. He is well-informed and has actually TAUGHT in the field, unlike many education professors. I highly recommend him!! He's funny and easy-going and you'll gain alot from him.
This professor ROCKS! I didn't get the grade I wanted, but I did get inspired, which is worth way more than any grade. The class was incredibly helpful to me since I start student teaching in the fall. Take this class with Dr. H. He's more than a teacher--he's like a friend too.
Great teacher! Pushed me to think outside the box. Class readings were helpful for future teachers and our discussions enlightened me to so much about teaching. I highly recommend this class, but ONLY with this professor. AWESOME!
My most enjoyable class I've taken at DePaul. The professor pushed me to think about education in really different ways. A decent course load with great class discussions. I highly recommend the class for those planning to teach in the city--lots of discussion on urban cultural and social issues.
One of the best teachers @DePaul. The readings and lectures showed me another side to life than what I'm used to. The final is an artsy kind of project that helps yuo explore your own teaching interests. I had a great time and he's a cutie too! Take him.
PHENOMENAL class and professor! The one class that really got me thinking about teaching and LIFE!
Why did I have to go thru 5 years of undergrad & 1 year of grad school to just now encounter the BEST prof I've ever had. Horace is amazing! He knows so much about EVERYTHING. But the best part is that students bring in what they know & teach others. GREAT class & awesome (really cute too) professor. TAKE HIM!!
great summer class with a very passionate and knowledgeable professor. i learned a lot in 4 weeks.
I'm taking his class now and I think he's excellent with a lot of insight into what it takes to teach in Chicago. He's fun, inventive, laid back and knows a lot. Great to talk to about anything too.
one of the most rewarding classes i've taken. wasn't just meaningless stuff, but things you need to know as a teacher. prof. hall has a great sense fo humor and is really nice to look at :) take this class!!
Dr. Hall's class was really amazing. Through the lens of adolescent development he made me remember how it was to be a high schooler and ultimately it is helping me be a better teacher. I strongly encourage anyone to take your SCU classes with him.
Wonderful teacher who really cares about students! Fun to listen to and very personal teaching style!
Incredible, caring, and just plain phenomenal! The class and professor are the best I've had @DePaul. I learned so much and was just captured by Dr. Hall. Take the class and all your SCUs with him. He ROCKS!
Definitely, one of the better professors I've had. Pushed me to be responsible for my own classwork and gave me a lot of insights into teaching. A rewarding class and great prof.
Really cool and cares about his students a lot, wants the whole class to learn. He got to the point every class and once we covered what needed to be covered he let us out! (it was a night class). Plus, he's easy on the eyes... ;)
Finally had the chance to take this class and it was the BEST!! Prof. Hall's really cool and connects with students in such a great way. He's a role model and all the students LOVE him! Ooooh, just take the class and you'll see!!
Dr. Hall made otherwise boring, historical issues in education interesting and relevant to my teaching profession. I graduate this quarter and was so lucky to take him. He pushed me to not only become a caring educator, but also an activist in the community in which I plan to teach.
This is the second class I had with him and once again he didn't fail to inspire. I really love his class. He tackles real issues in a very non-threatening but real kinda of way. He gets to the point and you leave. I like that! The class is pretty easy, just do the reading, work, and participate and you should get an A in his class.
Great class & an awesome professor! A good load of reading, but topics that were meaningful and thought provoking. Our final project was like creating an electronic term paper--way cool! I want to take Dr. Hall again & again. I was truly pushed & inspired!!
Excellent summer course with an outstanding professor. he has an incredible knowledge of schools and curriculum to be so young. I wish I could take more classes with him. Dr. Hall is a true asset to DePaul. I hope he stays to teach my children :) A must experience class with this professor!!
The only teacher I've taken who explored our fears as future teachers, but also offered us hope & help. He connected all the topics with what we're actually going to be doing--TEACHING--which made the readings better. He was honest, real, & fun. Take this class with Dr. Hall. I really enjoyed him.
Hall is the best things that has ever happened to me.His class was easy but so much fun. He was awesome and learned so much from him! Im taking his class again in the spring and im counting down the days! Cant wait and im looking forward to what will be going on in his class! I LOVE YOU PROF. HALL!
I'm loving Prof. Hall too! He really makes the course work relevant to our lives, plus I feel like he actually cares--not just about students, but about his own work in education. I'll be taking him in the spring too and can't wait to see what he has in store!
So far, I haven't seen in any mention of how hot Professor Hall is!!!! Whoooo! Plus, he is awesome as a educator and a professional and he makes us think deeply about our profession, why we chose it, and what we can do to better education. You go, hottie!
Dr. Hall truly pushed me to think more about youth in our society, teaching, & even my own biases. The final project is somewhat difficult, only because it edges you into better understanding yourself. YES, OK, he is a beautiful man. BUT beyond the surface, he's truly a passionate, gifted & warm educator. You will, without a doubt, learn so much!
This class ALMOST made me not pursue teaching because the instructor made it all too real for me. BUT, he also gave students a lot of hope & assurance in what they're doing. TAKE IT, if for no other reason than it makes you rethink your assumptions & intentions around teaching. I totally recommend it.
Highly recommended. Uses relevant readings and topics which definitely give you a lot to think about. Very friendly and personable and easy to get along with.
He is a young guy who is a great professor, if you can take him for your class!! his class is fun and easy and he makes not boring! great teacher
Nice professor, cute & really smart. Likes to hear your opinions and structures his class around urban education. Hopefully you can get a class with him
GREAT class! AWESOME professor!! Laid back, but pushes you. Does a good job of teaching the theories you'll need to know, & how relates it all to teaching kids. TOP notch!!!
You have to take this class with Dr. Hall. He's definitely passionate, knowledgeable and cute like everyone else has said + he's got a great sense of humor. Several readings, plenty of group work (maybe too much) and a final. I enjoyed it!!
Professor Hall is amazing! I would highly recommend him. Did not read any of the articles or meet with my group for the presentation, and still got an A in the class. He is very funny, intelligent, and loves what he does!
Fantastic class and professor! If you want to teach and know what's going on in urban or suburban areas, take Hall. I liked his style--animated and very open to student comments. The readings were interesting and not too heavy. Just a nice man--you'll see. ****
SEXXXY!
Somebody PLEASE tell me why is DePaul hiding this professor. I've been at here for 2 years and never had such a wonderful class experience. I LOVE this guy! Dr. Hall made this the most memorable learning experienc. 5 star class everybody!
I took this class last quarter. I absolutely loved this class. Mr. Hall found many ways to keep the class engaged in the material we were learning. We frequently worked in groups in this class. He is very good at keeping your attention for the full 3 hours. I would recommend all education majors to take his class.
If you're an Ed major, take at least 1 class w/Dr. Hall--unforgettable, challenging & encouraging. He's 1 of the best@DePaul. Trust me
Awesome class and professor!! Not the easy A (or A-) I thought--his grade scale seems high, but I get it. Not a truckload of readings, but he keeps you busy thinking. Just pay attention and come to class ready to discuss EVERYTHING! Ed. majors need to take a class with him.
I have this professor now & he's brilliant, genius! He doesn't yap at you for 3hrs straight. He invites your thoughts + gives you a lot of insight into schooling. I love his style + he's a cute. Take him when you can. So worth the wait.
real & inspiring. helped me remember why i want to teach with all that's going on in schools. professor h was so in tuned with our class. pushed us, but when he felt things were too heavy, he cut us a break. probably would've failed the final without his understanding. u have to take his class--helps you think outside the box & know yourself!
This was an amazing professor & class. We discussed so many issues about schools & education that I truly feel more prepared going into the field from taking this course. Dr. Hall kept me on my toes & thinking. I think all Ed. majors should have to take a class with him.
Coolest professor! Tells you the real stuff going on in education & the world. He also gives you strategies for dealing with it. He expects a lot of discussion and participation. I want to take Prof. Hall as much as possible.
He is amazing. I have learned so much from his class. He tells you what is going on in teaching and really makes you feel like you can do something about it. He is more than a teacher, but a guide. If you ever need someone to talk to he is there and willing to listen. Take him if you can!
I love his mind, spirit & face!! Totally made me want to come to class!! Like everyone else, just take Dr. Hall!
I really enjoyed the professor and class. I think ALL students going into schools and working with kids should take this course. It's more than about just teaching. It's about what and you teach.
Professor Hall is the best professor I have had at DePaul so far. I would love it if he taught all of my education classes. TAKE HIS CLASS! You will not regret it, he is so real, passionate, and excited about what he's teaching. He makes you think and when you get it he let's you know. He is absolutely inspiring & the best professor I've had here.
If you want a stress-free course for your quarter and actually learn something meaningful beyond memorizing stuff, TAKE DR. HALL. He'll stretch your mind!! It's just that simple...or is it??!!
I genuinely liked this class & Professor Hall. The readings were engaging & included mainly theories, but he presented them in clear & digestible ways. His BIG thing is thinking outside the BOX & I can say I truly left our course feeling intellectually stimulated & a better educator. I would take Professor Hall again!
Dr. Hall is probably the best education professor I have had at DePaul. He clearly states what he wants out of everyone. Very exciting lecutress. No book is necessary but you do have to read articles/pdfs and I suggest you do because it will definitely make this class a lot easier! Overall very intelligent person and cool to talk to!
best teacher at DePaul. I loved every class he taught, I made my schedule so I can have him again next quarter. Hands down favorite teacher.
Yes, the best...intelligent, funny AND HOT! Take his classes. I'm finally being pushed to THINK!! I love his class and him!!
He is so great. Really pushes you to think. Not a lot of work is required, just some reading but it is all very interesting and relevant.
Easily my favorite teacher I've had at DePaul. Will have great discussions on topical issues that involve everyone in class
Prof. Hall is real, passionate, smart (obviously), thoughtful, & has a great sense of humor. I was impressed! My favorite teacher because he gets you thinking about the real world and things you can't see BUT are right in front of you. I wish I could take him again BUT I'm finally graduating!! Prof. Hall is my role model everybody!!
Really good class and professor. The readings were all PDFs and critical. The final exam was pretty hard, but open notes. Thanks for that, Dr. Hall! I will take the professor as many times as I can. I was challenged to think about a lot of issues as a future teacher.
Dr. Hall IS the 1! He's my favorite!! He's SO into what he does and shares valuable knowledge with the class. The readings were interesting. The class lectures and discussions helped me think a lot about my future as an educator or maybe activist. I highly recommend this prof for sure!!
Um, pay no attention to the hater. Personally I enjoyed this class. The professor is easy going and gives you much to think about around how students develop in different ways. I haven't taken the final yet, so I don't know how easy this class will wind up being BUT I learned a lot about what teaching really is. I would take him again!
I liked this prof until the final-- just kidding. I love you Dr. H!! The final was rough though. But he is super real, informative, & so passionate. I would take him again. Just take notes on everything he says & you should be ok. I have thoughts, ideas & theories I'll use when I become a teacher for sure.
One thing that hasn't been said about prof. Hall is his support of black and Latino students. I know I and others would've been out this program without his guidance and kindness. He keeps it real about teaching in CPS and I know cos I'm a product of those schools. Thanks prof. Hall.
Professor Hall was absolutely amazing; the best professor I have had at DePaul. So helpful and always wants class to be interesting. I like that the majority of class be presentations but my favorite days were when he talked and led discussion. Absolutely take him!!
Horace Hall is one of those professors you should definitely take if your in education. He has so much knowledge, leads great discussions, and is super engaging. He comes to class with only a page of notes in hand but still somehow make the whole hour and a half interesting and engaging.
Thank you Dr. Hall for making my time at DePaul an enjoyable, rewarding and memorable experience. You always invited me to think deeply and showed me how to be the change I wish to make in this world. You're truly the best professor out there. THANK YOU!!
Wonderful summer course! It was nice to have a professor who was easy going BUT truly expanded your thinking on historical and present day education issues. I HAVE TO TAKE DR. HALL AGAIN!! He's the best prof I've had in my program.
Almost more sermons than lectures, but soooo inspiring and informative. Gives you the real deal (like it or not) in teaching. Quizzes are ok, but his wisdom really gets you going! Worth the $ & time.
Just take this guy! Enough has already been said.
GREAT energy! SUPER passionate about teaching and education. Hope I can take Dr. Hall again!!
This class opened my eyes to many in education. I learned more than I thought and Dr. Hall motivated me more than any other class to become a teacher. So glad to have taken this class and professor.
Professor Hall has a great style and spirit. I love him!!! He's the best!!! He connects with you and you learn so much from his knowledge and wisdom. I was so sad our class ended :-( I would take him over and over again if I could xoxo
2 words--BORN TEACHER!
One of the best teachers I have had at DePaul. Professor Hall is smart and knows how to make the material meaningful to students. He is charismatic and really does a good job of making you care about the material. Class is not difficult, but not a blow off either.
I'm new to DePaul but this was a super class & professor for a "newbie." Awesome lectures that really opened up my thinking & just a great vibe overall. I have to take Mr. Hall again or as much as possible. You do too!
I'm not an ed major, but this class was beyond schools. It was about life on so many levels and I learned so much. I was inspired by all we talked about. I would recommend prof. Hall to any and every student at DePaul. If I could take this class again or have him again I would hands down. Amazing!
Hall is a real gem, his "lectures" are incredibly inspirational and really make you think about education. He is an incredible teacher and has an amazing background. Not a lot of work, just a couple of pop quizzes and a presentation. No final or midterm!
Oops. There's actually 5 pop quizzes throughout the quarter, 1 group presentation and an in class final!! Still take him though, you'll gain so much!
An incredibly wise and inspiring professor. He knew my name before the start of the second day of class and continued to show interest in every individual student. If you're looking to become a teacher, use this man as one of your biggest influences.
So blessed to have taken professor hall this quarter. He really gets you thinking and feeling about schools, communities, and the world. He's just a passionate guy and it rubs off on you! Lots of reading, discussion and out the box thinking. Take him for sure!
So he's the 1 you want to take. Clear to me that he gives you so much of himself in lectures and out of class. He also pays attention to every student. I'd take him again whenever and wherever.
Hall teaches a great class. The material is really well selected and the lectures supplement it really well. Only two real quizzes, a group presentation, and an open-note final as well, so it doesn't add too much stress to your schedule. (this review is also curriculum)
Passionate and charismatic lecturer. Wants you involved in discussion. Group pres, 5 quizzes + a final--take home.
such a great class and professor. i learned so much about past & present issues in schools, society and teaching--the kinds of things i know will help me when i start teaching and just things i feel everyone really needs to know about but don't get exposed to until college! you must take this professor!! i agree he's the one.
I had Professor Hall many moons ago in undergrad and he STILL has the same passion and charm NOW. This summer's on-line course (590?) wasn't too stressful. There were some heavy readings and quizzes to get through, but the final paper was easy enough. Basically, a good course to take for summer.
I went the first day and I was hooked. What a mind-blowing way to start my graduate program.
Horace Hall is by far the best professor I have ever had. He is so passionate and really knows what he is talking about. There is some reading which is important to do but as long as you are paying attention in class you are fine. This man changed my life and outlook on education. NO DOUBT TAKE HIM!
Professor Hall is a genuinely great guy. He clearly cares about what he does and that passion effortlessly comes through in his class lectures and attitude. The class is sort of an easy A, but that doesn't mean you don't gain anything from taking it. Lots of solid class discussions and interesting & lengthy readings. Not just about the grade.
My kind of class & prof! Pushes you outside the box, cares more about what/how you think than boring regurgitation. My best advice: Take notes on everything he says, itll help you with discussion points, the quizzes & most def the final.
Really good class. I was exposed to economic and political issues that I had zero knowledge of given where I grew up. This class forced my mind wide open and i feel much more prepared to teach in Chicago public schools where kids struggle everyday with things not even related to academics. I would take this professor again for sure.
Legit class! The quizzes and final werent too bad. One of the biggest challenges for me was thinking or rather rethinking everything about schools and our societypast, present and future. At times it was uncomfortable but I definitely feel more wide wake now. Prof. H was a great guide and even mentor. Take him if/when you can.
I struggled in this class. None of what it offered was my experience growing up. I didnt know about segregation, pipelines or charter schools. I felt bad for why poor kids fail. By mid-semester, I kind of woke up. It became less about my feelings & more about understanding inequity. The teacher gave me a lot to think about & even care about.
So far, most education class that I've taken at DePaul, and its not even close. Dr. Haul's SCU 207 class is one that you will learn many things from if you put in the effort and show up. It is not just busy work, everything assigned has a meaning and you will learn from it, and is also a reasonable amount of work.
Show up, participate, be authentic and do the readings and you will do well in this class. If you have an issue - talk to him. He's extremely helpful if you take the initiative to ask for it. Also, bring food for presentations and he'll love you forever.
Super cool professor! Has a great balance of humor & seriousness thats SO needed today. I learned more in 10 weeks from this class than in my first 2 years at DePaul. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Dr. Hall ONLY if youre ready to think outside the box & change the world!!!
Easiest class ever if you are liberal and understand systems of oppressions and are willing to talk, learn, share and grow.
This professor was I think progressive, maybe even somewhat radical. Class readings/lectures opened my eyes to things I was blind to and even unwilling to face. I worked hard to figure him out and gave 100 to what was asked. He was fair and gave good feedback to my papers. I would take Hall again but be more prepared for his expectations.
Rad class & professor. Didn't expect to learn as much as I did about all the oppressions of the world. There were number of papers & a lot of class discussion. This class was challenging in that Hall kept urging us to think about how we are socilazied into our 'isms'. He really wants you to THINK! Take this class. It changed my life!
Absolutely exhilarating class. Loved the material, discussions & the teacher. Learned so much about schools, society, myself & the worldbasically question EVERYTHING. Not test heavy but reading, writing & talking was important (almost every class). You have to take Hill!
Cons: Quizzes vary in difficulty so its hard to figure out how much you need to study; some readings have a Marxist/radical view which didnt fit my political views. Pros: Super energized, smart & caring professor; nice balance of lectures & student input; great learning experience; so worth the $$$.
By taking this class with Professor Hall, I really became sure that I wanted to be a teacher. He is really inspiring and hilarious! He is one of the few instructors who's lectures are far from boring. He is so lively and such a great teacher and I would definitely take a class with him again! Complete your work and put in some effort and it's easy!
Simply phenomenal! Glad to have taken this professor!! Every class was filled with so much knowledge/information about current US issues in and outside of schools. For sure, if you can take Hall it's so worth it! A lot of readings and papers, but a really cool arts kind of project at the end. My favorite class and prof @depaul so far.
Really good teacher. He responds fast to emails and actually cares about the students well being. there is a lot of reading so definitely be prepared for that. Gives good feedback too. As long as you keep up your discussion posts and do good on the quizzes you should get good grades.
Professor H was super inspirational for me as a future teacher. I recommend him for all depaul students, especially teacher educators. I left his class, like so many others, better prepared to teach students and advocate for their families and communities.
Horace Hall is one of my favorite professors!!! He is so caring and teaches very valuable lessons about the education system. The lectures are very important and insightful especially if you are going into the education field.
Dr. Hall is an amazing professor and you will feel very inspired to pursue a degree in teaching after being in his class. His lectures are very engaging and he explains things very well. Be prepared to speak in front of the class for long periods of time. I definitely recommend taking a class with Dr Hall!
This was my first course at DePaul. It was a fast-paced summer course and it did require a bit of reading and some short essays. I am sure that this course can vary in your experience based on your cohort, it is very participation based. Dr. Hall does have a tendency to go on tangents but I found most of the conversations very interesting.
I'm in my second year as a full-time graduate student. I had Hall in the summer. He sparked my intellect in further pursuing my degree. He gives the class much to think about and he's a great class leader. The readings are heavy, as well as class discussions, but I felt at "home" talking about issues of my own experiences as a CPS teacher.
Doesn't really lecture, but be sure to take notes when he does. Stay on top of readings, participate, and go the extra mile on papers to get an A. Being shy or having a different opinion is not really an option, despite this class being needed as a gen ed requirement. Also, don't expect him to champion all issues about race and power lol.
Excellent class and professor! Opened the classroom up to different experiences and ways of thinking and voicing about issues happening today. I appreciate Professor H for creating a class where I could re-find myself after covid-19. You should take him. He treats you like you matter as a student and your opinion and perspective matters.
Dr. Hall is honestly the best education professor I've had at DePaul so far. He sometimes goes on tangents but they're always related to the course and his experiences so I never minded and his lectures were interesting. He forced us to really think and actually gave critiques on assignments, he didn't just mark things 100%.
He's very knowledgeable and cares about your opinions and time. Work is minimal with weekly readings. Introverts be aware, there's a fair amount of public speaking and group activities with class debates and group presentations, but it's not too bad. You might be asked to argue against your viewpoints in debates. Lots to learn, pretty chill option.
Totally love what Dr. Hall brings to class every week. As a present teacher, he shares his knowledge and experience every time. Really good teacher and class.
My last class at DePaul couldn't have ended better with this professor. He's inspirational and fun. Take notes on everything he says and talk during class discussions--he's all about your perspective, PLUS it'll be on the final--mostly essays. Not a tough grader, but expects you to think deeply about topics. He's a must take for ed. students!
Truly enjoyed the class. Lectures were interesting, even the history side. But what I really valued more was being able to connect with Professor Hall outside of class to pick his brain and get more insight/wisdom into teaching in public schools. He was more than a teacher, but also a mentor.
Since all depaul students have to take LSP 200, I totally recommend taking Professor Hall. He makes material interesting, current and important regardless of your major. I enjoyed it and would take him again if I could.
Prof Hall makes lectures very interesting. Be ready to read a lot. Exams are fairly easy. There is a big presentation that every is required to do, takes up the whole class time. Attendance matters, can only miss two classes. No papers to write, only the presentation and 4 exams.
really cool class and professor that challenged me and got me thinking about past and future issues on race and class. truly deep stuff that i'm glad i learned even though my major is theatre. quizzes and group projects weren't too crazy, but would recommend taking notes on whatever he discusses--it's on the final.
Professor Hall is an inspiring educator who makes his classes engaging and valuable, especially for aspiring teachers. The workload is manageable if you stay on top of readings and discussions. I found unstuck AI really helpful for preparing for the essays and quizzes.
I don't talk much in class, particularly when it comes to politics, but this course drew me in and compelled me to speak up often. The professor has the kind of energy that gets you involved. Essays and quizzes aren't too heavy, just really thinking assignments. I recommend this professor especially in the social times we live in.
Best Professor I've taken so far, take his class.
Love professor hall! He's very engaging and cares about his students and the learning environment. He switches up the quiz structure which is nice and I learn a lot!!
Clone this professor now! I need him teaching all my classes year 1-4! He makes learning difficult theories and ideas interesting and a lot of fun. I felt I had freedom to think, speak and just be me. There's also real community energy in the class.
