Mr. by the book.Do not expect anything that you did not work for here.Lab class is not fun.Field trip is pointless and quizes can be confusing. He really tries to make it work, though.
You will learn a lot here. No need to buy the book as most of the test is from lecture & study guides, go over your notes and thee is no reason not to get an A. Don't expect to get out of class early that is the only downside.
He is a good teacher who wants you to learn. He is very flexable. He WILL go off on 30 minute tangents though. As long as you look over the study guides before the tests, you can get an A.
Proff. Houska is a great biology instructor. His tests are kind of hard but if you study you'll do fine ..Overall his class was fun and enjoying. If you really want to learn Bio Take PRoff. Houska ;)
He is very clear when it comes to explaining details of things that you need to know and he will go over it until you get it. The only thing is he will always keep you over the class time. Expect to stay the entire hour and a half of lecture and sometimes a little later.
Mr Houska is awesome!! He will bend over backwards to accomidate his students. He is enthusiastic about everything he teaches. You can tell he loves what he does, and you will learn and remember more because he is fun in his explanation and makes hard subjects simple.
Mr. Houska is great. Probly one of my favorite teachers yet.Extremely helpful and available. Very fair, absolutly loves what he does! Wouldnt mind taking him again!
Mr. Houska is a great professor. He is very clear and helps you when you need it. His exam are fairly easy because he gives you a study guide and notes, basically, he tells you what to learn and study for on the test. Also Mr. Houska is not a boring person in lecture he tries to make jokes to keep you awake.
What an amazing teacher! The material was at times difficult, but Mr. Houska is so passionate about teaching, he makes class fun and intresting. If you're a visual learner, like me, you'll benefit from his endless drawings to help you understand more clearly. His tests are fairly easy, as long as you study your lecture notes & study guide.
GOD BLESS HOUSKA!! This teacher puts all other teachers to shame. Prof. Houska has a great sense of humor, he is a kind and a genuine fellow. He amazingly takes what could ultimatly turn out to be a nightmare course and makes it a dream come true!!! I greatly enjoyed coming to class and still remember many of the details, which I find fascinating!
The best biology teacher I've ever had. His notes were so clear and he is big on drawing pictures and diagrams, which helps understanding the concepts. His tests were straight out of the notes so take good notes. I barely even opened up the textbook and I still got an A in the class.
The best biology teacher by far. He makes everything so clear. His tests are right off his lecture notes. He makes his lectures fun, he is funny and a really genuine guy. I truly recommend him.
He is the best!
Such an amazing teacher! He is so helpful, he takes so much time outside of his class and lab to make sure that you are completely comfertable with everything. The best anatomy and physiology teacher around!
easy class, okay tests
A great teacher. Had him for human anatomy and does a great job of explaining concepts. Is straight forward about what needs to be known for the tests. Probably my favorite college teacher ever in what was one of the hardest classes I ever had
The best around, one of a kind
He is a great teacher. Very Knowledgable about what he is teachin. Very helpful and his class is very fun. Way to go Mr. Houska.
Compared to other professors in Bio, hes a good guy. His lectures are clear and interesting. Exams are kind of tough. Lab exams are difficult. He test you on labs we skipped and things he said we dont need to know. He has TA's who might have written the exams.
had him for lecture. Everything is very clear, or if not, will answer your questions until it is - even in a large lecture hall. Definately would recomend for any lecture.
He is the best teacher. You shouldn't skip the class and make sure take a good note. His tests is OK but have many tricky question, so read them carefully
I TOTALLY, TOTALLY LOVE MR HOUSKA'S TEACHING TECHNIQUES. HE IS PASSIONATE ABOUT HELPING HIS STUDENTS REALLY LEARN THE MATERIAL. HE TEACHES YOU HOW TO LEARN. HIS TESTS ARE SOME WHAT HARD & A LITTLE TRICKY, BUT IF YOU TAKE GOOD NOTES YOU SHOULD DO GOOD. I LOOKED FORWARD TO COMING TO HIS CLASS. HE MAKES HIS LECTURES FUN AND TO THE POINT. HE'S THE BEST
You have to work hard in this class but its not impossible to get an A. Mr. Houska likes to go on tangents and get philosophical sometimes and it kind of annoys me but I think most people don't really mind it.
Fair, very helpful, funny, kind, patient, passionate about his job, & knows how to teach effectively. Just take good notes & ask him after lecture/during office hours/via email. He's great w/email and answering your questions. He loves it when you ask him questions. He's not mean and won't scold at students because he's very respectful/professional
It's an okay class...but I think I learned more about his health problems than anything. If you took high school bio it's pretty much just a review. Doesn't miss class or let you out early...
Look~ physiology is a difficult subject, and I'm a C average student, but for this class I really tried my best by going to every lecture and recording his lectures and I pulled an A. He doesn't test on the text book, he only test you on the lecture. SO don't miss class!!! overall he's a really nice guy, and helpful.. just take good note in lecture
passionate and cares for his student. often goes off subject and lecture about life. no textbook required, professor test only on his lecture notes, so attendance is mandatory. overall is an easy professor since half the class earn A or B!
Mr. houska by far is the best science teacher around. He teaches his lectures so the students can understand clearly. Just attend every lec and pay attention and you can pull an A or B. His test can be tricky at times but they are usually straight fowrd and on everything we went over. Take him you wont regret it & you'll actaully learn something!!!
Excellant teacher, makes you understand the subject very well. i enjoyed his class.
so far, in bio 249, he gave 2 quiz,2test,2lab exam but there is no credit yet, hope he will give out credit, but he'll drop the lowest one, about 120 student in 3 of his class, and so far there about 15 got A with high pt,there also alot of students with low grade, it about pay attention in his class and you are the one have to study alot, love it
I went into this class terrified of physiology since I heard it's nothing but hard, hard, hard. Definately not the case with Mr. Houska. He is crystal clear on everything and he has a TA who conducts study groups after every lecture which is a HUGE help. I probably studied no more than 3-6 hrs/wk and got an A. Take him - you won't regret it!
You Know Houska, Rocks~!!!
He is an excellent teacher that I have ever had. One of the things I like about his teaching is his demonstration (he draws to demonstrate).
Houska is wonderful, I actually get stuff with him. There is minimal homework. The study guide are a little difficult, but he goes over them with you, and lets you ask as many questions as you want. Take his class, I HIGHLY recommend it. & as for that guy who said Houska sucks, he is a liar. He is in the same class as I am in, and i do not see wher
His Lab was amazing. He explains everything without you getting lost. He is very understanding and lets you ask as many questions as you want. He is very intelligent and honest. He makes the class interesting. His quizes and practicals are very easy. He will not ask you a question unless he has previously explained the topic. I reccomend him to all
Great teacher. Very thorough and clear. Easy to pull an A or B in that class. Everyone who is looking for a Biology class whether it is a lab or lecture, needs to take his class.
best teacher ever! he really knows his stuff. easy going and makes class interesting! i took his class over the summer and was glad i did. take good notes and you should do fine.
He is the best. What I have learned from him, it will stay with me forever.
Best teacher by far. Highly recommended. You'll love his class.
best biology teacher by far. I started this class reluctant, but now I'm so glad I chose this class. He explains everything so well. It's IMPOSSIBLE not to do well. Plus, he conducts study groups and is willing to explain things until you get it. GREAT TEACHER.
you get study guides, he sets up studt groups, and he spends time teaching the material. He is funny and gets the information across very well. It's almost impossible to fail. I recommend it to everyone. His lab class is nice too, but a bit more challenging. If you want to take biology, he's the teacher you should pick.
He has a gift of teaching and explaining things. I had Human antomy with him and really enjoyed; besides, he gave many extra credit, esp in practicum. At the end of the semester, I got A+++. Houska rocks!
Houska is an excellent teacher!!! He explains in detail so much that it is super easy to understand. I took Phys with him and he made it seem easy. He goes over thing many times to make sure everyone understands what he is talking about, which helps imbed it in your brain. Answers questions to the best of his knowledge. Very good teacher!!!
Excellent. Funny. Challenging.
EXCELLENT Prof! Genuinely cares about us learning. Explains everything in detail, very visual explanations. Not an easy class, u have 2 work hard, but his gift for teaching really makes everything sink in. Great sense of humor, relates subjects to real/his own life. Lab also good. It's nice 2 have a prof who actually cares! Very happy I chose him!!
Great Professor!!! Very helpful and caring unlike other professor.Highly recommended. Interesting and easy to understand lecture & lab. Also, he has a great 2nd helper who review everything in study group. Plus, he like to share his personal experiments.
Mr. Houska is one of those teachers you dream of having. He is actually passionate about what he teaches and he does NOT try to intimidate people from asking questions. Susan (Study Group Facilitator) is also amazing! As stated by someone else, this information will stay with me forever!
VERY knowledgable teacher! One of the best, nicest, and MOST HELPFUL teacher ive had! Clear yet unorganized lectures. i suggest you attend study groups and review his study guides. He's easy, and wants you to get a good grade in his class, so he gives out extra credit and bonuses on exams. i HIGHLY RECOMMEND you take his class!
Great professor. Easy to understand. He really cares about his students. He's also really funny when telling his personal experiences; he and his assistant Susan make such a great team. Attend to Susan's study groups, study out of lecture and study guide and you will be fine. I truly recommend prof. Houska. He's an amazing teacher and person.
You defenitely haft to study for his class. His a challenger when it comes to exams. Be careful because he will trick you on the exams. He will use physiology on his exams. This is suppose to be an anatomy class not a physiology class. Over all great instructor!!
Take him if you're a visual learner.
He's a good teacher. And he is very easy to talk to.
AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!! Patient & down to earth. Wants you to learn. Give's lots of extra credit on exams & drops lowest scores. Does not collect Lab's or give homework. Would take his class over & over again.
What an amazing teacher - he's fair, he explains everything clearly, he's funny, answers all questions, give extra credit, labs aren't graded (but there's tests). Drops one exam. Class was easier than I thought. (and this is from summer class). Textbook isn't needed (just for reference). It's hard to fail as long as you try.
VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE.HELPFUL.I'm 4 sure taking him again. 4 exams/quiz drop the lowest score. 2 lab practicum.exams are multip. fill in,T/F.the 1 that said he test on physiology things, WRONG. he test u 2 see if you understand the material n how everything work together. maybe u should study n pay attention in class instead of bad mouth the teacher.
Great Professor teach at a level you can understand.
He is an awesome instructor and his aid Susan and her study groups give you a very good comprehension of the the subjects!! Highly Recommended Instructor !!!
Passionate and inspiring. Houska and Susan are quite the team. As long as you are willing to do the work and take the time to learn and not just memorize you will suceed.Houska and Susan apply anatomy to real life and inspire you to do your best by giving their 100% every class.
Mr. Houska is a great teacher, I had him for anatomy and physiology. I wish he taught more bio courses. He is down to earth and very helpful.
He is the best professor that I've never had. Higly recommend!
Mr. Houska is one of the best professors that I have ever taken. I took Anatomy & Physiology from him. I highly recommend him. Do the study guides & go to Susan's study groups. You will be glad that you did!
Amazing teacher. Turns difficult subjects like anatomy and physio into interesting subjects to learn. Go to classes and ask questions. Make sure to do the study guides. He is very nice and very patient with students. You will not regret taking any class with Professor Houska.
My FAVORITE prof. of ALL time! I loved this class. Bob is an amaaazing teacher, very clear and dedicated. If you do not understand one way, then he will explain it another way. This guy loves what he does and I feel extremely fortunate that I had the opp. to attend his class.EXCEPTIONAL "teacher".HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!-WC
Great teacher....explains very well
Excelent teacher! Explains everything very well. Writes and draws out everything so its clear and simple. He knows how to teach! Funy, keeps classes attention. Tests are based on notes, not how much time you spent reading the book. Ive taken 2 of his classes and highly recomend him.
THIS PROFESSOR IS THE BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD HE LIKES STUDENTS TO LEARN. HE ALSO LIKES TO EXPLAIN EVERYTHING HE WILL COVER FOR TEST OR LAB EXAMS. I TOOK HIM FOR HUMAN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY I LEARNED SO MUCH!!! I REALLY REALLY RECOMMAND ROBERT HOUSKA FOR YOU!!
I LOVE HOUSKA!!!! THE MAN IS AMAZING. I WISH HE WOULD TEACH ALL MY CLASSES!!! He explains everything so well. I took him for anatomy and physio. Physio kicked my ass but it's doable with Houska. These are hard classes but you will learn and have a good time with Houska.
Mr. Houska is one of the best professors that I have ever taken. The best class I have taken so far. I was so nervous about taking physiology, but Bob definitely made it extremely interesting and easy he explained very well .It's not an easy class by any stretch of the imagination, but as long as you study hard an "A" is easily obtainable. Record h
Not the easiest subject but Prof. Houska made it easy to understand. One of the BEST teachers at SCC. So helpful and easy going. I will follow up with him for Bio 249.
Amazing Teacher! Focuses on getting you to understand the concepts. No hmwk! Exams straight from lecture and lab notes, and manuals. Dont even bother with text. Study what he tells you to and you can easily get an A :) Its a lot, but at least he tells you what it is unlike most.
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had!
Bio 149 course was okay during the summer session. I got an A in the class by studying hard. Lecture exams are based on lecture notes and study guides only. He says you do need the book unless it is for reference only, but I feel you need to the read the book to get the understanding of the lecture notes. Study guides ?'s is just to prepare you.
If you like your notes organized, don't take Bob. His notes are jumbled and crazy and it's hard to jot them down. You have to put in a lot of studying hours to do well. Definitely not an easy class. He does give you a LOT of extra credit points on tests and I actually got an A when I should have gotten a B- so that was cool.
Professor Houska is an amazing teacher. His two best qualities are that he does not use Powerpoint and he doesn't believe that learning a subject is about memorizing. If good notes and a solid understandingis your learning style Professor Houska will be a good fit.
Definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had. Took Human Anatomy and Physiology with him (234 & 249). Go to class, go to lab, pay attention and STUDY. If you put in the effort, you'll easily get an A. Bob is extremely helpful, and does his absolute best to make sure you understand the material. I wish he taught all my science courses!
I had heard a lot about Professor Houska prior to attending. He has a reputation for being a great teacher. I, however, didn't really agree with it. His lectures are poorly organized & he frequently goes on random rants. With that being said, his lecture guides and practice tests are a must due to his inability to actually teach during lecture.
Bob is a cool guy. His lectures are simple as long as you take good notes. Has some great stories. I recommend him!
AWESOME PROFESSOR! I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND HOUSKA TO ANYONE. TAKE GOOD NOTES AND RECORD THE LECTURES TO GO BACK AND CLEAN UP YOUR NOTES. ALSO, ATTEND THE SI SESSIONS. YOU WILL GET AN A! :)
Houska is a good teacher, he makes you understand the material instead of just memorizing stuff. I got an A in his class. You do have to take notes and study. The tests are pretty difficult!
Study!!!!!! If you do his online test and pay attention you are garunteed an easy A he even drops lowest test. He is very helpful but tends to go off topic.
Difficult content but he lectures well and enjoys teaching. If you have questions he's there to help. He gives you info on a tutor that helped a lot.
Both very interesting classes. You need to attend every lecture and lab because his tests are very specific. Also, make sure to study days in advance because the tests are difficult. If SI is offered, make sure you go!
Horrible teacher he goes way off topic on his rants about stars and the tests are very difficult.
If you can take physiology with Dr. Houska, I highly recommend him. I love his teaching style and I can tell he wants his students to do well. You do have to study, don't expect to get a free A. Go to class, stay off your phone and listen. you'll do great.
Physiology is a really hard class in general. Professor Houska explains it clearly for his students to understand. His test are straight forward, if you regularly study you'll be fine. He makes the concepts easy to understand, it's just that there are a lot of materials. didn't want to compare, but i have to because he's sooooo good.
Study hard and you can get an A
Doesn't explain anything well. He says, "you don't have to write that down" and "you'll learn that later" than now he goes, "you should know this by now" WTH! He is confusing, and doesn't teach well. You have to pay a his tutor to learn he is supposed to teach. Not cool at all. No power points and his drawings are confusing. est questions are hard.
This professor literally helps his students succeed. If he goes further than what he does, he is basically gonna feed to the students. Very clear on what he wants us to know and understand for the coming exams. He draws on the board to help us understand better, which helps me to understand the concept a lot easier.
Professor Houska makes physiology come into real life by giving real life examples and drawings on the board. I'm a visual learning and it's hard to picture our everything works but through his way of teaching has made this course interesting! some say tests are hard, but his tests are not fair compared to some other professors. Take him!
Never met an awesome professor who knows exactly how to teach this difficult subject so easily for students to understand. I would take this class again. He also draws on the board and it helped me a lot to understand. if you want to learn physiology, take it from him. He needs a raise from the school! Such an awesome professor!!!
Any one can stand in front of class and read off powerpoints, but I prefer Dr. Houska's drawings on the board as he walks you through difficult concepts step by step. In his class, you actually LEARN, not just memorize info. Feel better prepared for nursing. Take good notes, use his manual, and study, and you should get an A. GREAT teacher!!!
he's slightly pessimistic and not very approachable; however, his class is easy b/c he talks slow so we don't cover much material& he also has practice tests. 4 easy lecture tests including the final& 3 lab tests. drops the lowest lecture test. he actually encouraged us NOT to read the textbook/to only look at it if we were confused about something
Wow, I have walked out of these class learning so much in depth about human body... I am taking a nursing class now and I find myself looking back to my diagrams and notes from Professor Houska's class to connect nursing and a&p together. They all make sense and I can actually understand nursing!
Worst professor I have ever had. He goes off on topics and his lectures are impossible to understand. His drawings look nothing like how they should be and study guides did not really help. Not an easy A at all.
Good instructor go to the tutoring and especially for first test you should make at least a B, there is a pathway to success in this class
Excellent class. I took it over the summer so it was a bit more accelerated, but I'm glad I did. If you pay attention to his lectures (attend every one!) and study for 30 minutes to an hour after every class you should be fine. Utilize bluedoor and take all the tests/quizzes in the lecture/lab study guides. Good luck!
Great professor take notes I really enjoyed this class and his lectures. I passed the class based on my notes didnt have to read book. he writes and draws everything on the board. Labpretty easy too
He is tough and you will find yourself doing all the work on your own. He just talks and draws diagrams on the board which eventually pile up and don't make sense when you go back to look at them. He doesn't use powerpoint either so you have to be quick to write down what he said. I found him to be tough and the tests were tough. Don't like method.
No homework. Textbook not necessary for either course. If you take it in the fall or spring there is no attendance for class but the lab takes attendance. First exam doesnt have extra credit but after that there is extracredit on the tests (5-12 points). For final grade has his own grading scale. This semester 440500 was A (dropped lowest test).
Amazing Professor! People are saying he's hard but he really isn't. You have to work for the grade you want, use his study guide, and take good notes. his tests are based on if you understand the material, you need to learn it not just memorize it to pass! labs are an easy A. Totally Recommend this professor Passed with an A!
I have previously taken both of his anatomy and physiology classes. I came to rate this professor because I am now in nursing program and I realized how much materials I actually learned in class is helping me in nursing . Prof Houska draws to help his students UNDERSTAND the materials for further education. He is fair, and by far the BEST!
Takes up to a week to grade scantron tests, sometimes longer. Uses no powerpoints, relies solely on his drawings, which are not good at all. His notes on the board can be very confusing. He will move tests back and will give no email notice, so if you don't show up to class, make sure to make friends. For lecture, I would not recommend him.
Nothing to study off of except for his drawings on the board, which are all over the place.
You will really learn, and more importantly you will learn to think outside the box. That is the greatest gift that not every professor can make a reality. If you are a neat person who likes neat and orderly notes, be prepared to get frustrated (only con).
Amazing professor! Took him for anatomy and physio and I'm glad I did. I learned so much from him, once i took him for anatomy he motivated me to work hard for my grade. he draws on the board which helps so much if your a visual learner, his tests are knowledge based and are easy if you study. Got an 'A' in both classes. definitely recommend him :)
Tough class but interesting! Show up to the lectures and memorize your lab & lecture manuals before tests and you will pass!! The way he teaches is so different from other professors, no only does he explain whats happening in the body but WHY its happening, this makes you create connections and helps tremendously to understand the information! A++
Lectures were unstructured, lacked depth, and filled with barely relevant tangents. Messy diagrams and a lot of jumping back and forth between topics. He doesn't use notes, so he forgets to tell you things. Study guides and tests had information not covered in lecture. I did well through self-study. Well-meaning person, not a great teacher.
