He substituted for our lab once, he played music and had a sarcastic sense of humor. He explained things in layman terms, and checked for 100% completion of the prelab.
Hard class if you do not put in the effort. Dr. Brown is a great guy with a fun personality, he is very helpful with all questions. Visit him during office hours if you want a good grade.
Dr. Brown is incredibly helpful. He makes more office hours than any teacher I have met. He runs his classroom (lab) in a relaxed manner, but you still need to be respectful. There is a lot of work in this class but it is all doable. If you are willing to put in the work you can get an A in his class.
Highly recommend! He is an amazing teacher and really shows interest in the students learning and getting the material. Has office hours for your benefit, so take advantage. You do need a book and do your hw to understand and he also gives extra credit which is really helpful. You will learn alot from this teacher! We need more teachers like him!
Dr. Brown's lab does require some time and effort on your part, but he provides everything you need to do well - and you learn A LOT. Show up prepared, submit your work on time, study, and youll be fine. I found his lectures to be the best part of this class; he explains difficult topics in a way that is so easy to understand. Highly recommend.
The homework is a lot but doable if you keep up with it. One 5 page research paper. Takes attendance with clickers. I do have to point out that if you have any questions GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! He is very sarcastic in an almost condescending manner. Beware. A little more laid back when you have a one on one with him. But still beware.
Prepare to major in Chemistry once this man enters your life. Spend half your life doing all the homework on ALEKS and Connect. He is condescendingly sarcastic and takes on too much responsibilities in his personal life to actually care about his students. Expects students to watch lectures he posts on Sun before Mon class to do Iclickers quizzes.
Not sure about the poor rating just given. I think it's one of the angry students he had to kick out because they just would not stop talking. Brown is a great professor, so much he gives out is cell for questions. Even met with students outside of school. Not sure how many professors go out of their way that much for students success.
Not sure about not caring about his students. When I took him, he spent hours (up late, even) working with IT support to make sure students had access to online course materials. He gives you most everything needed to succeed, and he's in his office a fair bit. He's not just going to hand you an A though, so expect to work hard.
If you are looking to actually learn chemistry take a lab with Dr. Brown. It is not easy, it is not always quick, but you will learn how to independently work in a lab with confidence. Dr. Brown will meet you at midnight at starbucks to study. He will answer your texts at 3 am. He is invested in your success if you are invested in yourself.
Do not take this class if you have a busy schedule. He does not actually teach anything in class, he just reviews things he's expecting you to have done homework for and moves extremely fast. I'd say skip, except every class begins with a quiz that's for a grade.
One of the best professors I have ever had!
Be ready for the loads of homework you will be expected to do! You are expected to do the online homework (OWL) due every Monday night and be ready for the ridiculous amount of questions it contains. There is a 5 page essay and group video due towards the end of the semester. If you don't put any effort, do not expect to get an easy A!
Overall solid guy, reminds me of gramps. Watch out for chemistry puns, he seems to hate technology, but also love it. A lot of Online HW, and his lectures are online so he spends time in class doing practice problems (here is where attendance counts). If you do the HW you'll do fine on the tests. Easy A just show up and practice. Try to go to SI!
Pleasel, I advise people don't take this class. Unless you are willing to spend the majority of your semester on this class. He grades very hard you can send in a 15 pg lab report and he will give you an F if it doesn't meet his expectation. Hid quiz is ridicously hard and he does not curve and the quiz cover topic we learn but he makes alot harder
Made a 70 on TLC lab report, 65 on the recrystallize lab report and 57 on first quiz. Dr. Brown lab isn't easy it will take alot of hard work in order to succeed. But he is invested in your success and always make himself available for his student . Your lab report writing skill will improve and your ability to think critically will improve too.
Most people say he's hard and has you do lab reports and follow protocols, but it is for a very good reason. He is very helpful and answers questions if you try answering them yourself first, and if it wasn't for his class, I wouldn't be surviving this other tough chemistry lab class. Take him and you will master organic chemistry.
His tests come straight from reef, only he rewords them to make them sound complicated. He really want you to understand the concept not just know it for the test. Chem/natural science major yes. just want credit nope.
Dr. Brown will teach you ways to learn chemistry that are so much quicker and easier than you have learned before. Tests for the most part are straightforward.
1. Reef questions are used on tests 2. 4 exams, drops lowest 3. Do all of ALEKS, really boosts your grade 4. Watch lectures, if you dont you'll be lost in class 5. If you have any questions on ALEKS or on lectures email him or go to his office hours. 6. DO ALEKS!!!! 7. DO ALEKS!!!!
Dr. Brown teaches chemistry in a fun, practical way. He has loads of experience outside of the classroom that is extremely valuable. If you learn to write "A" level lab reports, you will find you have gained a valuable ($$) skill in the real world. It takes work, but what do you expect? If you aren't serious about chemistry, take someone else.
Funny professor, clear on what he wants and does not sugar coat his words. Four tests, lots of homework online that's due every Monday at 11 pm, and 3 papers to write. READ AND STUDY. DO YOUR HOMEWORK. One group project that's easy. Put a lot of work to this class. If you skip, you'll get lost. Always come prepared and do what he says! You'll do fine

He is a very tough and intimidating professor and gives a lot of online assignments and homework, in order to pass one must take notes and be expected to come to class on time and always prepared attendance is mandatory if you want to pass.
Love Dr Brown! He might seem tough but he just wants you to learn. As an adult, why would you not be expected to be on time and take notes? Sorry kids, this is life. If you want a great professor that loves what he teaches and has great ways of getting you to learn, Dr Brown is it! There is a lot of homework, but its only a small % of grade.
Hardest class I'v ever taken. Lots of homework! Tests are very hard and he will give you a very little time to study for each test.
This is a very hard class I would never take his class again. Its suppose to be intro to chemistry and its more like advanced chemistry. His test are very hard and confusing and the homework is very hard as well. He is very condescending and he gets upset if you don't know or understand the material. DONT TAKE HIS CLASS. I REPEAT DONT TAKE HIS CLAS
I took this class because of all the great reviews that he was given but next time I will know not to listen. Worse class ever no matter how hard you study it still seems like the test was different then what you learned. One good thing I can say is that he does give points for coming to class.
Dr. Brown is a fantastic professor. His main objective in this class is to help the student every way he can to make sure they understand the material and those struggling are reached out to. The amount of problems given in the homework is set up so you will not only understand it but be able to teach it to other. Completed owl A on exam.
good prof, lots of homework, hard tests, final is easy, helpful, study a lot.
do clicker quiz problems and the video/review problems and you'll ace the tests .
Dr. Brown is one of the best professors I have ever come across. I have had many, many years of education in numerous backgrounds, and he is one of the most thoughtful men I have ever met. He really wants students to succeed, but your grade is earned; it is not given. If you put in the work, and show your interest you WILL succeed in this course.
He is knowledgeable. But too much work for a 3 hour credit. Lot of homeworks and papers to submit.
He's an amazing professor! If you are going into the medical profession, you will thank him for all the dimensional analysis homework. I'm now in nursing school, and we use dimensional analysis to calculate medication doses quickly & accurately. It's a critical skill. If you can't do it, you will never pass nursing or med school. Grateful for him..
This professor is a life changer, and I am baffled that he limits his teachings to Chem I. What he teaches isn't material, it is skill. If you work hard, you'll be a dimensional analysis expert. He makes balancing equations look like child's play. Attend the SI sessions if you don't like reading the book. Study for the ACS in advance! 10/10 !
I dont understand why people only say 68% would take him again. He is by far the best professor any student could have. Yes, he can be sassy and goes to extreme measures to explain things, but its all for your benefit! LISTEN TO HIM AND DO THE OWL HOMEWORK. IT HELPS ON TEST AND YOUR GRADES. I REPEAT DO OWL. This class was fun and made me LOVE chem!
this man needs a 5 star rating ASAP
After reading the reviews I have to believe there must be a different professor brown. I took his class because of the good reviews but those reviews are very deceiving. If you want to learn don't take his class if you are a chemistry expert than take his class. He expects you to know the material instead of teaching it to you. Worst class ever
Thanks to this class I overcame my phobia of writing lab reports. Thanks Dr Brown.
At first it seems like some of the things he emphasizes are ridiculous, but he does a great job teaching the material and good job skills. Dr. Brown incorporates feedback from students every semester and generates progress reports for you. I decided to reach out and have a conversation years after graduation with him regarding my career decisions.
He is a hard professor if you love not doing anything. You have to pay attention and come to class or he will give you a hard time about it (as he should). He emphasizes on the things you should be learning and will not teach something that is not on the exam. Do all of the OWL and you will ace your exams. LEARN DIMENSIONAL ANAYLSIS TRAIN TRACKS!!!
Amazing teacher. He seriously goes out of his way to help students out. If you ask him for a video over chapter he will literally do it no matter where he's at as long as he helps his students. Chemistry can be hard but as long as you do your part from studying to doing homework you should do good. Last thing he will make you laugh! He's funny!
Why does this professor only have a 3.8...?? he's probably one of the best professor's at UHD. He gives ample opportunity for you to get an A if you do your work. He also makes chemistry insanely fun and he's so sassy! I miss him loads
This class was incredible! Dr. Brown's lectures were very honest about all of the chemistry in our world today, the good and the bad. It opened my eyes to the energy corporations, the chemistry behind them, pesticides chemistry, nuclear energy and much much more! I honestly wish it didn't chemistry pre reqs so that more people could take it!!
Dr. Brown is a great professor. I recommend taking him.
Professor Brown made learning the chemistry interesting. Online homework and book necessary but provided, did not have to pay. You have more than enough opportunities for help and feedback. Show up, do work, participate and you will be fine. Group projects and papers make or break your grade.
Dr. Brown is amazing, take his class if you can work your butt off for your grade. He explains things really well & he goes fast too, so be sure to talk and ask questions as much as you can to keep up. Do OWL(it HELPS) and attend the SI sessions if you can, and watch the supplemental vids. He sets your base knowledge of chem really well for future!
Dr. Brown is seriously an amazing professor. Do ALL of the OWL problems, attend SI sessions and see him during office hours. I ended up with over 100 in the course by doing these things. Yes, its a lot of work! But this absolutely lays the basis for any and all science fields, so do the work to reap the rewards.
Best ever. Although a lot of work to do, he really cares about his students. His lecture is pretty interesting. I will strongly recommend him.
This was Dr. Brown's first time teaching organic chemistry 2 lecture at UHD, but not his first time dealing with it. He was very organized and his test are very clear if you studied. The class was over the summer so it was a bit fast paced but he was great at explaining. If you get the chance to take him, DO IT! He's very reasonable.
I took Ochem 2 with him over the Summer outside my home university UM. This class made me rethink everything he is the most caring invested professor. I had a personal crisis and the professor went above and beyond to help me learn not just make the grade. at UM no professor would ever care as much as him he cares about your education 10/10 a gem
Overall the class is ok. Watch video before class make this class easier, and you can definitely pass if you pay attention in class. BUT I dont like him, he made me really headache. He is kind of stubborn, only agree on his own method. Asking reasons for everything, even though it is not Important at all.
Dr. Brown is a fantastic professor. He is very sarcastic but it makes the class more fun! If you are not solid in gen chem or have dropped it before, TAKE HIM FOR INTRO CHEM 1305. He will make you practice till you can do it in your sleep. Got an A in his class and an easy A in Gen Chm 1 the next semester. Thank you Dr. Brown!
If you have struggled with Chemistry do yourself a favor and Take INTRO CHEM 1305 with Dr. Brown. I think it should be mandatory, I watched as other students struggled and failed in Gen Chem 1307 but Dr. Brown's former students FLOURISHED. I will 100% take him again in the future.
This is a difficult class, so be prepared to put in the work. There is a lot of homework, but it is actually very helpful. There is a group work as well. Best thing: he CARES, and is almost always available to speak 1:1 and help you. If you do poorly in this class you only have yourself to blame.
Dr. Brown takes the time to actually work problems with the class. It is a total game changer for how to study organic chemistry.
If you want someone to teach you good chem, he is the guy. I enjoyed his lecture and will be taking him again. Sometimes I didn't like how sarcastic he would be and how everything HAD to be his way or its wrong (even studying habits) but he's not a bad professor and he gives you ever chance to get a decent grade in his class, very organized.
Professor brown is a really good professor, hes a bit intimidating when it comes to asking questions and he puts you on the spot if he sees that you arent paying attention, but hes still a really good professor. I learned a lot in his class and Ill definitely be taking him again in the future. If you do take him make sure to study! It helps!
Dr. Brown is a great chem professor! Took O Chem 1 in summer 1, which was intimidating, but Dr. Brown made the class very straightforward and was invested in students' learning. Grade is based on exams (50%), final (20%), homework completion (10%), attendance (10%), and watching videos before lecture (10%). Overall great class!
Best professor I've ever had? This man immediately comes to mind. Organic chemistry can be tough, but Dr. Brown makes topics so easy to understand by breaking them down for you in his lectures. If you put in good effort, there's no way you will fail his class. He genuinely cares about his students as reflected in his availability and xtra cred.
He is a living nightmare. Constantly belittles students, makes fun of them for not knowing things. Hes supposed to teach us this but instead he ignores questions and says we should already know the subject. 10/10 do NOT recommend. Has a very bad attitude. Not sure how or why he became a teacher if he isnt willing to actually teach
WARNING: do NOT take this class. Not sure how he got all these good reviews, do not be fooledThis man doesnt teach, just expects you to already know the material. If you dont he makes fun of you in front of the entire class or ignores your questions. Very rude and condescending. Will just complain that you shouldve learned this in highschool.
He is a great professor, you just have to put in the work like reading and watching the lecture videos before class. The people who complain about this class are the ones not putting any work into it/the ones not actively participating in class and if you are struggling he's available for 1one1's but complaining gets you nowhere in this class.
Unfortunately I am not impressed. Professor spends more time making fun of students or chastising students for asking questions. He just always says we should already know the material. Not sure how he has so many outstanding reviews. Maybe he writes them himself. Dont take any classes from him, the frustration isnt worth the time or money.
Wrote a review the other day and it was taken down. Not sure what is going on, but the score is not accurate in my opinion. He has potential to be a good teacher, but is so far failing. He doesnt really teach and just makes fun of people for not knowing the subject. I do not recommend this guy
He assigns too much homework, his lectures are intense and lecture heavy. He's too sarcastic and his attitude is not the best. When you get a wrong answer he makes fun of your answers and when there's a low test average he asks us why we don't ask questions and gets mad.
Orgo is known for being hard, go into any orgo class expecting to work hard bc there's a lot to remember.. the prof can't change that. People complaining must not want to put in any effort. Dr. Brown's an excellent teacher, he's clear about what's needed to do well, I think the sarcasms engaging + funny. Study from the beginning and you'll do well
Not sure why so many people are bashing him on here. Dr. Brown is a great professor. He wants you to be engaged so you can learn the curriculum. He encourages questions and is really patient with oftentimes redundant questions. If you're a good student, you'll have no problems with Dr. Brown. He also slips in humor into his tests which is a relief.
Dr. Brown is awesome. He gives students many opportunities for extra credit and talking to him outside of class was always pleasant! He is sarcastic and has a particular sense of humor. However, many students mistake his humor for him being mean or judgmental. He simply asks for students to prepare for class and to engage fully. Exams aren't hard.
He gives a lot of work to give opportunities to do better somewhere else if you did bad. Stick with the book, homework, and PowerPoints and you will do good on the exams. He gets annoyed easily. He will pick on you and humor you. Which is not a good feeling. I say do your thing but don't make mistakes. He won't be merciful.
He cares about your success. The class is tough but he makes it manageable. You have to put the work in, and if you do, you'll do great in his class. His video lectures can be long, but they are detailed. He will use many different methods to help you learn the material because he cares so much. There are not many like him.
His teaching style was just not for me. The clickers you have to do are awful and so stressful. The inverted lectures you have to watch were helpful, but there's nothing like having the professor teach the material right in front of you during class.
Not sure if it's standard for chemistry labs but Prof Brown has high requirements for his lab reports. To finish one, it takes hours to complete for the amount of details and information you have to include. I felt overwhelmed for a 1 credit freshman class.
This professor is extremely uncaring of what is going on. Labs take HOURS to complete with harsh grading, considering this is a one credit class I am sure he wants you to waste as much time as possible just for fun.
Dr. Brown is an awesome professor. If you're looking for an easy A with no work required, maybe not the class for you. However, if you really want to understand the material, he is the best. As long as you are putting in the effort, he will work with you and you will pass the class. I can't stress enough how accessible Dr. Brown.
Dr. Brown made his labs easy enough to follow but genuinely he was so rude. He would pick on freshmen for not knowing advanced chemical concepts and belittled everyone. I would say take him if you can shut out his notice and unnecessary sassiness, otherwise don't.
Definitely an amazing teacher to take if you really want to learn the material. Not a blow off class, but I really enjoyed it. He will help you on the material if you need it, whether in class or during office hours, so take advantage of it. Attend SI sessions for test reviews and you'll do better than amazing in the class.
DON'T TAKE HIM! I took him for a freshman seminar class a very long time ago and I had some questions about a project we were doing and he literally called my phone number on a Sunday and asked what my problem was. YOU DO NOT DO THAT. I should have reported him, it is so disrespectful. Aside, his work was too much and I am still traumatized.
He isn't bad at teaching, but he is very blunt and passive aggressive. Which made it hard to ask for help ask questions.
Do not take! He'll call you out and is hard to ask questions. He embarrasses you if you don't know the answer.
One of the best professors I've ever had. He's a bit intense but you get over it. He genuinely wants you to pass and his whole deal is that you have to ask for help when you need it; he's ALWAYS available to give it. It's a difficult class but he's not a difficult man. Do the homework, ask for help, ask for extra credit. He rewards effort!
lecture was INSANELY difficult.I like him as a person, but did not like his class or the fact that its a flipped classroom. He gives extra credit, but don't rely on it to pass.Lots of homework too,but it helps. He is a funny guy and does really care about his students. Don't take him if youre looking for an easy course tho.
He is the most amazing professor I've ever taken! He might be a bit passive aggressive, but he mean well. He always offers everyone to come to his office hours or schedule a zoom meeting with him in case you need any help with the material. He explains the material very well with various examples and doing each problem step by step. 10/10!
Passed with an A. Coming from someone who almost failed chemistry in high school. Attend the lectures, do the hw, video notes. He can be intimidating but he's really nice and will always be there for help. Meeting him outside of class is easy too. He's interactive as well, so don't zone out in his class lol. You can get bonus pts on tests.
Dawg every week i had to write 8 pages of notes for a grade. Test was open ended and we had to memorize everything while other teachers let their students use formula sheets and cheat sheets. I got a 0 on the final and ts was multiple choice. he's not a bad professor but at least he could be more lenient to his students. I will keep you in prayer.
He is so dedicated to teaching and helping his students and you can tell that he loves chemistry that it makes it easy to understand and learn. If he taught other classes that I would have to take in the future I would pick him immediately. His lectures are a little heavy but as long as you follow along you'll be good.
I really like Dr. Brown, he helps you when you need help and will be there for you when you need him. He gives a lot of work to do but it's better to keep your grades up, he ask you a lot of questions in front of everyone so you got to answer him. He is nice but mean sometimes so you gotta deal with him. Otherwise I love him he's so funny.
This professor wants you to utilize your resources. No periodic table is available during the final exam and prepare for questions about the unit during lecture. Take notes before class and be ready to participate. Even if your answer is incorrect, it helps the professor know you're trying. Very caring professor, you just have to put in the work.
I've never written a review before, but for Dr. Brown I have to. It was an honor to be a student of his. He's caring, fun, and extremely supportive. He gives you all the tools you need and more to succeed (plenty of extra credit). If you have the privilege of taking Dr. Brown's class, I'd recommend him 11 times out of 10.
I personally like the way he teach, I know a lot people doesn't. Tests are a lot with little time but he will give you A LOT extra credit. He is usually answering emails and he has a lot office hours so you can reach out to him. I want to take him for chem 2 but he doesn't teach it.
Alot of work but its easy
I took Dr. Brown for my freshmen seminar class and i wouldn't recommend. He likes to speak to you like you don't know anything. Attendance does matter even if you leave class early he will count you as absent. He makes you write reflections every week. I will say he does respond quick but i wouldn't take him again.
