Attendance isn't mandatory, but if you have never taken stats before you should really go. The help session is what you NEED to go to, my TA explained it better and attendance is counted there. The exams are like the practice exam (if he gives one) and there are weekly homeworks . You may have to learn more outside on your own & there's a project.
Did not respond to emails at all or very delayed. Made a lot of mistakes corrected by students in lectures. Did not teach or explain things very well, felt like he didn't care about his students. However, homework and tests aren't too hard as long as you show up to study sessions on friday.
He made a bunch of blunders in solving questions the students had to correct. I feel like he wasn't completely aware of all the course material as well as a professor should be but nonetheless he did give extra credit and the project is easy. attendance is only in the Friday class and homework is easy too just study for the final well
Horrible teacher. Doesn't read through his assignments and makes several spelling and calculation errors. I never understand what he means with his assignments because they aren't explained well. 0/10 don't take this guy. Also don't buy the book. Its worthless.
Professor Sanders is great for intro stats! I took it the previous semester and failed because my professor wasn't clear at all. Houston is clear, concise and easy to understand. I would've gotten a better grade had I put the effort in, but definitely no reflection on him. He's great!
He's really nice and answers all your questions. His lectures are easy and he does a lot of practice problems. There's a mandatory Friday review session with a TA and thats when attendance is taken. I liked statistics and this is one of the easiest classes I've taken at USF.
If you put forth the time and effort to do well in his class, you will! He genuinely cares for his students and if you aren't understanding a concept, he will take the time out to thoroughly explain it. I've never been one to be great at math but I found the exams to be easy (questions based off study guide & there's bonus questions.) Great prof!!!
Nicest teacher I have ever had. Super accommodating, allows make ups on quizzes and exams. Study guides have all the questions that will be on the exam. Couldn't have asked for a better teacher
This was a pretty easy class overall. The weekly lectures weren't super necessary to attend as long as you went to the TA sessions and understood the homework. Exams were easy because the exam review was basically a copy and paste. He's willing to meet outside of class if necessary, just beware because he's a little awkward.
The exams are almost the same as the practice tests given. The one downside was the amount of homework given for this class. I thought it was excessive and it took me hours. Also, make sure to keep up with the information so that you do well on the Friday quizzes. The class is time-consuming, but you'll likely get an A.
While people enjoy his classes in person, his online class has been an absolute nightmare. Lectures are so mind-numbingly boring that you can't help but stand up and leave 10 minutes in. Every quiz taken in Canvas has an incorrect answer key, and when you email him to fix your grade, you get no response. What a horrid introduction to college.
Honestly, he was my favorite online professor since COVID-19 was a thing. He provides great study guides and resources for your success. He is very patient and answers every single question. He usually has very large classes and he is amazing at explaining each topic. Overall, I wish more professors were like him.
One of the most amazing and caring professors I've ever had. He really works hard to make sure his students understand what is going on and explains concepts very well. He wants his students to do well and does everything he can to make sure they can be successful. During COVID he was very understanding when certain issues would come up. I LOVE HIM
Sanders is a good professor in my opinion, especially during this time of COVID. He does give a lot of homework but if you pay attention, youll pass with an A guaranteed
The course is VERY test heavy, with exams making up 45% of your grade. I did not like the way the class was structured but that's not his fault. He is a nice guy who is accessible outside of class and teaches well. But if you want to do well you HAVE to work for it. I also recommend taking this class with Dr. Venkat if you're a visual learner.
Professor Sanders was very informative of all the expectations for the course. As long as you show up to the lecture you will understand the material enough to get an A. Several homework assignments and exams, but are take-home. Easy to talk to, and pretty understanding.
Took him fall of 2020. Interesting guy, actually loves what he teaches, and is willing to talk about it outside of class. If you like math, particularly applicable math, you'll like this class. The homework is a bit time consuming, but there's no getting around that with any stats professor at USF really. Enjoyed it.
The lectures were boring and hard to understand. He just went through the slides and I feel it was more confusing than it needed to be. There was online peer leading which didn't help at all and quizzes every Friday. The tests were ok and graded on a curve. I just wish there was a way for the lecture to be more engaging so I would pay attention.
Mr. Sanders is actually a pretty great teacher! The textbook has practice questions that really help you understand the content. He's really good with his communication as well. He explains everything thoroughly as he goes, but pay attention or else you'll get easily lost. Good luck :)
While he is a good professor, I just didn't click with his lecture style. He does a mix between live and presentation notes, but it just did not work out for me. All homework is due at the end of the semester, and there are quizzes once a week on Fridays online. Peer sessions are mandatory, and honestly were not helpful at all.
He's an amazing professor! He teaches the concepts clearly, is super sweet to talk to, and is the most understanding professor I've ever had. He gave a lot of chances to help our grade, including letting us redo quizzes, dropping our lowest quiz, extending the homework due date, and adding extra points to our exams. Definitely take him if you can!
He is helpful and cares about each and every student. His lectures are very clear and perfectly paced, and he does a good job at clearing up confusion. Stats can be hard, but he provides a lot of resources for us to succeed, (lecture videos, detailed exam reviews, immediate response to emails, etc). Couldn't imagine a better stats professor :)
Chill professor, explained concepts in a more casual way. Class honestly depends more on your study habits than teaching.
I took Sanders for Eng Calc 1, and it was a pleasant experience. The explanations were pretty good and he knows what he is doing. However, the powerpoints he gives us often contain errors.
chill guy, explains stuff in a simple way. although attendance isn't mandatory, it WILL be how you get an A in this course. attend every lecture and you'll be pretty much fine for the exams. he releases practice exams that are pretty similar as well. your success honestly depends on how good your TA is for peer sessions b/c they help a lot.
Took him for Engineering Calc I, he was fine, sometimes he would forget how he solved his examples, but you should be fine as long as you ask questions/clarification. I thought the class would be hard but got a 98% at the end, just make sure to put in the work and pay attention!
Being a younger professor definitely helped but he still was not the best at teaching a topic from scratch. Would answer questions well, drop the lowest test grade even if it was the final, and gave tons of partial credit. Even hough I had already taken calc I before, I still got lucky with this professor
Great professor! Honestly one of the best I have ever had at usf! Explained the material so well and really helped prepare us for our exams and project. I am usually terrible at math but was able to do well in statistics because he is a great teacher. I highly recommend you have him as your professor!
Dr. Sanders was a great professor. He drops your lowest test grade!!! Even though attendance isn't mandatory, I would recommend going. Accessible after class, and during office hours which really helps.
One of the best math professors at USF, this is not the only class I took with this professor. He is very good and *PASSIONATE* at what he teaches and is always available to teach you, or help you outside of the classroom. His exams are exactly what he teaches in class, so if you attend lectures its an easy A.
He taught off of slideshows he made for the chapters and they were semi-useful. The content was very easy for me and I received a 97% in the class with fairly little studying on the exams. Not a bad prof. just think that Bieske's methods are superior. Her way of teaching and her style of notes allowed for a deeper understanding of the material.
Overall intro to Stats was an easy class to take. The only challenge I had to face was Houston Sanders. His lectures were useless and boring. To do well in the exams I had to go to another professor's lecture (Amber Briesk) and teach most of the material to myself. Moreover, the homework was annoying. Take this class, but not with Sanders. He sucks
The class was simple and if you took statistics in high school or AP stat, all the information would be familiar. The only thing is that you can't use a graphing caulculator there a lot more work by hand. The lectures were okay but he reads off the slides and works out some problems. Use MyPearson to practice and you will pass.
He gives exams on Satudays at 5:15, purposely on game days. You also have to attend an online microsoft teams tutoring sessions every Friday for attendance. He has so much criteria in his lectures that it's hard to keep up. I don't reccoment taking unless you are really good at stats.
Dr. Sanders is an awesome professor! His methods and lectures were clear and easy to understand if you attended class. Stats is not an easy subject and success in this class depends on attendance. I would take him again if I could! He is funny and extremely responsive and wants you to succeed.
This class is test heavy, as a majority of your grade will be exams. As long as you do well on the exams, you will do well in this course. As for the professor, I attended a lot of his lectures. His teaching style is visual, and he explained the concepts well. Houston is a great professor and he cares a lot for his students and their success.
Speeds through topics and expects you to know material that he never covered or even referenced. Condescending and overall a very negative experience. Has a policy in his syllabus that if he doesn't do his job and respond to your emails that you have to find an alternative way to reach out to him.
As someone who struggles w/ math, stats w/ Sanders was incredibly easy. I had an A+ all semester and have gotten above a 90 on all the exams. His rubric for the exams is clear on what he wants u to do and practice tests are IDENTICAL bc he writes the exams. You can fs learn how to do everything for the exams just by studying from his slides.
The professor is fine and seems engaged in teaching. However, Stats is an awful course and I would recommend taking any other math class. I could not make myself care about this class to save my life and I'm a straight A student.
Lectures were very thorough, provided extra practice material as well as extra credit. You should be fine if you complete homework's because they're essential to understanding the material. He did say that I few things would be changed in upcoming semesters but he really made sure anyone could get help with the course.
Sanders is a solid professor. There are three exams and a final with homework and a quiz every week. He curved the exams, and there are extra credit practice exams that can give you up to 4 points added to your final grade. He opens all homework up and gives one extra attempt on each quiz for the week before finals. Explains statistics very well.
Although professor Beiske is the "fun" math teacher in this department, Dr. Sanders is knowledgeable, kind and always smiling. The homework and quizzes are easily accessed through Pearson. There is plenty of study material to do well on the tests too. Just apply yourself and you will be fine.
Great guy. Positive and always smiling. The course is structured to where there are plenty of opportunities to raise your grade. Offers tons of resources and office hours. Truly a pleasant experience. Also, he is truly a nice guy. As long as you take the time to understand the concepts, you will do well in this course.
you'll do good as long as you study!! he gives plenty of extra credit/grade opportunities. he also gives multiple resources to study for the exams. he does attendance randomly and also curves the exams. workload also isn't too bad with a few homeworks and one quiz each week. overall very nice professor who is passionate about this class
Before this course, I had no knowledge of statistics at all. Professor Sanders goes through his lectures quite speedy and just skims through sides as if his audience already knows what he is talking about. I took in hardly any knowledge from his lectures, so I had to teach the course to myself.
The first time I took this class I had to drop it, but after taking it with Professor Sanders I passed with an A+. Prepare to attend class, there are in person attendance quizzes which go towards your grade. He provides a lot of extra credit opportunities, as well as adequate material to study from. Study hard and attend class, you got this.
Extremely disorganized/doesn't respond to emails. 4 midterm he didn't print enough exams and around 100 people had to walk out/retake it. homework long/useless.A is bec study guide is the exam. would post it 2 days before the exam and the key the night before. Take this professor if you like stressing, vibe with procrastination, and incompetence.
Took this class in Fall 2023 ended up with a 115%, the exam review is the exam lollllll This professor is a legend and has good character.
You should go to class if you want to pass but the material is simple and clear. Tests are similar to practice tests. Homework is long but helps with the material.
I'm shocked he doesn't have all 5's. Obviously he is going to teach quicker with so much material to learn in one semester, but he does examples with us in class and explains every step very well. He makes exam reviews that are identical to the exams and every exam already has an extra 10 points so it's easy to do well. Definitely recommend!
He makes the class and topics very easy. He often goes on mini tangents, but he is a good teacher. He provides clear criterias on what he is looking for and still lenient in his grading. He has 15+ TAs so tutoring is always availdable. If you go to class and pay attention you can pass. He wants you to succeed and he makes it easy to do so.
I've heard a lot of people think the other professor is better, but I have never understood anything easier while being in his class. He walks you through everything and he is the one that makes the tests so he knows what to focus on. He was amazing
Very easy class if you do the HW and the notes. Sanders as a person is very annoying, he gets mad if you have questions and can be very passive agressive. He is also unwilling to be compromise on anything. If you are good at math I would take just because it's an easy class, but if you have a hard time understanding find another professor.
Loved Professor Saunders for Intro Stats I. Lectures are mandatory but the classes are okay if you simply pay attention. The content also wasn't too hard. If you prepare for the exams with the given practice tests + review lectures then you'll be fine. We do get weekly homework assignments (about 2 per week) and a quiz at the end of the week.
He's an ok professor. His teaching style is not what I am used to. He gives a good amount of homework that I feel doesn't really prepare me for the exams. He does give practice exams that are kinda like the exam but a little harder. He does offer extra credit and does a curve on the exams. Overall ok professor.
This class was not good at all. I have taken a similar calculus class before; those were the notes I used to pass this class. He had very unorganized notes FULL of mistakes and he would make mistakes of his own but not understand small test mistakes. He gives test reviews that are "like" the test but chooses much harder numbers.
He goes very fast. I would not take him if you have no prior knowledge of stats or are not super good at picking up math quickly. he also uses very mathematical terms. Hes clearly passionate about what he is teaching but he cannot teach it well. he speaks to us like we already know what we are talking about before we even started the course.
I honestly would not take him again, he goes very fast and is usually slow to put out study guides and the answers for them. I also feel like he teaches like we already know the material which is difficult.
Good professor, though a little disorganized. However, he was very caring about students, curved the exams, had generous grading and regrading, and gave extra credit. He wants you to succeed!! He was very considerate and flexible! Take him! Graded on weekly homework and like 4 quizzes; 2 out of 3 exams (lowest grade gets dropped) + final.
Prof Sanders was a bit disorganized but alright. Offers a lot of extra credit/curves on exams. Practice exams are very similar to actual exams. I found that I was teaching myself a good chunk of the math as his teaching wasn't as simplified as it could be. Calc honestly is not as bad as everyone says, but he doesn't exactly make it easier for you.
The class itself was fine, but the professor was not the best. He never answered his emails when you had a question, and instead would send a passive aggressive mass emails to the whole class (and sounded rude in emails generally). He teaches the material super fast and explains it as if we already know what he is talking about.
Overall, Sanders is a great professor. He is understanding, great at communication, very passionate about statistics, and always has a smile on his face. His enthusiasm for the course made math less boring. He has the lowest test score drop policy. He is also the coordinator of the statistics department so he makes all the exams.
The professor was very lenient, he made many mistakes. He gave out all the material needed for the test and that was enough to get a high grade. got 100 on my first 2 exams, so it is possible. As long as you follow along, you will be completely fine.
3 exams, 1 final- replaces lowest grade. One quiz/week, 1 project. Grades tough on exams. Practice exams are not helpful but do count as EC. Attendance mandatory. I despised this class, take anyone else if possible. He grades 95% of the test depending on if your work matches the method he teaches. Even if you get the correct answer. Would not Rec.
This was my very first stat class and I did underestimate it a little. I did all the assignments on Pearson and got a 70 (2 days of studying), 95 (a week of studying), and 78 (3 days of studying) on the exams and a 91(a weeks of studying) on the final. He gives test reviews that are VERY similar to the tests so review those!
Professor Sanders was a really nice person, however, would get off-topic fairly often. He already expects you to know basic statistics and if you have no prior experience, be prepared to do some studying. he would gatekeep the study guides up to 2 days before the exam date, which was annoying, but they're almost exactly like the exams.
I had him for life science calculus and he was great! He explained everything well and the tests were never too hard, the only problem I had was the answer keys for the practice tests often had mistakes. However, he would quickly correct any mistakes.
taking stat with houston sanders is like a dog holding its own leash, his lectures are wordy and confusing to follow. but at least the test reviews are almost exactly the exams.
Lectures and material aren't great but not horrible, but he is extremely passive aggressive in emails and the class standards are unnecessarily uptight. will likely give you a hard time for needing makeups, even with an excused reason.
This man is an absolute trainwreck. If you weren't good at math in high school GO TO ANYONE ELSE. He talks like you already know the basics of statistics, even though it's an intro class. He grades harshly, and if you learned an equation or setup other than how he (poorly) taught it, you won't get credit. Frequently makes mistakes/goes off topic.
If you have difficulty with math, this prof isn't for you. If you cant choose a different prof, you should prepare to study a lot. If you aren't studying ahead of the material he's teaching in class, you'll get left behind. He uses terminology as if you already know the material but it is apparent he is just very knowledgable in his field.
His lecture is amazing, easy to understand, and detailed. He is also hilarious. I really enjoy taking his class ^^
He is all over the place. He doesn't know how to stay on topic and he doesn't even grade the tests, the TAs do. The TAs often mess up the test grades. He takes forever to get through a topic and then he gets behind and starts to speed up and goes so fast. I taught myself everything for this class. If you need to take intro stats take Amber Beiske.
Passionate about statistics and very nice but not a great professor, I've gotten A's in math for 5 years until this class. Lectures were hard to pay attention too and moved through each section very quickly. Tests are all hand written answers and one point for each step you do, correct answers are only 1 point normally out of 6-15pt questions.
he was mediocre, his lectures were hard to follow. getting in touch with him was impossible, as he doesn't respond to emails and his TAs take multiple days to respond. get ready to wait 2-3 weeks for an exam grade. if you want to learn anything for stat, i recommend going to Bieske's lectures, the other stat teacher if you want to learn anything.
sanders has a very strict grading criterial; he wants u to show ur work exactly how he does it in class, which is why its so important to go to class. 3 exams, 1 non-cumulative final, 1 project, 10 quizzes + pearson HWs . def recommend talking to him after class if u have any questions as it helps a lot
If you are good at math you'll be fine. If you struggle I would take Bieske. He is passionate about statistics and is very nice he just explains things very fast and doesn't really go in depth on why and how. He does give good practice exams and goes over most questions for the test. He also gives a lot of EC at the end it bumped my grade up 7pts.
I was worried for this class because I had never taken statistics but it wasn't as hard as I thought. Dr. Sanders is a good professor despite some of the low reviews. The exams also aren't super difficult if you study in advance, but he does have a stricter grading system.
I took AP Stats in high school and took this course and will say if you do the work, complete all the homework, and attend lectures, you will do fine. The course consists of exams 36% homework/quizzes 22%, a project 12%, a daily attendance 6%, and final worth 24% that is mandatory and drop lowest test grade. I finished with a 101, lot of studying.
Despite the low reviews for him, Sanders is great! He will go over what we will need to know for each exam, showing us how to set up the problems to get as many points as possible - you can even get over a 100% on them. He will write out the notes on paper and its EVERYTHING you need to know, even scans them! The exam reviews are extremely helpful.
This class is fine as long as you pay attention to the details on the practice tests. They are very similar to the exams and offer a clear breakdown of every point offered per question. If I'm being honest I didn't pay attention to the lectures at all, I just studied the practice tests the day before and glanced over the lectures.
dislike the way he words certain topics/formulas. Presentation slides were ancient, he never updated them like he said he would. Kept having errors in how they graded my exams. I appreciate the access to tutors for the course via Teams. How does the math department not mandate recorded lectures? If any department should, then it is them.
Lecture and homework are heavy online. Final replaces the lowest exam grade. Very good instructor replies the same day. Lectures are straightforward; sometimes the homework differs from the lecture, but the exams are on point. Over all very good professor, you can tell he cares. Just pay attention and you will do well. Not a class to coast through.
Decides to have exams *always* on fridays, specifically on days like halloween. Throws tons of material at you in lectures and gets you lost easily if you miss one session. No bias or favoritism, but just trying to shove a lot of class material down your throat with barely anytime to understand mid-lecture
Professor Sanders is ver passionate about his subject and understands that this is not the only class students are taking, will have very helpful curves, and his exams are out of 108 points, which allow you to get a higher grade. He posts reviews on his youtube channel and they're AWESOME, its called “Houston we have a problem”
The material and tests were quite difficult, but he was good about giving curves and extra points to help boost up exam grades. I didn't think he was the best professor, but he made very helpful video reviews before exams, and there were plenty of homework and quiz points to make sure your final grade wasn't only determined by exams.
He's a really good professor and funny. I had him for stats and I understood the material pretty well even though I took statistics in high school. He teaches it and it's really easy to understand just as long as you practice. The exams can be a little difficult but just practice a lot. The practice exams are a lot harder than the actual exams.
He's chill!
He gets off topic a lot and doesn't always focus on the main topics that are on the exams. The projects aren't that hard, but he can be very confusing and contradicting with his instructions for them. The exams are also at weird and inconsiderate times (one was on Halloween and the final is on a Saturday night).
I did not like his teaching style or lectures; I felt that he never explained things well, and I learned better on my own. Homework and quizzes were easy to complete, and the projects were not super difficult. Didn't really want to take his class, but the others were full.
Highly recommend this professor. He is very passionate about statistics and genuinely enjoys teaching it. He is very approachable if you have questions and overall a very nice guy. I thought his lectures were easy to follow along and he taught the topics well. If you go to class, and do the homework, you should do well in this class.
When I had him for stats he was amazing but when I had him for life sciences calc it was kinda rough. I loved his review videos that he posted on Youtube for the exams but he also made a lot of mistakes during class. His exams were awful. He would always put questions on the exams that we never learned in class and weren't on his review videos.
Coming from someone who's sitting at an A- (92) , His class is doable yeah but to aim for a good grade requires a lot of work and utilizing resources outside of class. His exam reviews conceptually reflect what's on the exam, yet difficulty-wise wise his exams are harder and are actually awful. Don't believe him when he says the exams are similar
He is a good professor overall. I did not go to most of the lectures tbh, but I watched the videos he uploaded on YouTube cause I found those to be more organized than the lecture itself, the test are not crazy, but just make sure you write ALL of the formulas cause he takes points off for every little thing.
Course was straightforward and easy to follow. Exams were a little tough due to being entirely FRQ but he provides his own test review videos before each exam which covers everything you need to know to be prepared.
He is a kind and reasonable professor who provides many self-paced study resources. His exams are harder than the practice tests, but he offers a good curve and extra credit. However, if you are not a self-directed learner and rely only on slides and practice tests to perform well, this class may not be a good fit for you.
I went to his lectures for a while, but I didn't like his teaching style I guess he doesn't explain well. He is a tough grader. Breaks points for everything on exams if you don't write formula you will lose 1-2 points for that. Before final there was review at MSC with Professor Amber Bieske. I definitely recommend that review. She explains better.
You can definitely tell he's extremely passionate about statistics; however, his teaching style is more direct and a bit unorganized, switching from the powerpoint to him writing out and solving problems. Exams aren't difficult, but be aware to write down each formula used for each problem. At the end of the semester, he drops a bunch of grades.
I do not recommend signing up for his class if you can help it. I got a bad grade on my first exam, and realized that he wasn't teaching the way the test was being graded. So I went to Professor Beiski's class on top of his, because attendance was mandatory. It was annoying but saved my grade. Highly recommend doing this if you can't get her.
He messes things up pretty often in his lectures and explains concepts in pretty weird terms. He makes the test and another teacher makes the gradings so don't trust him too much. Other than that, the practice exams are pretty similar to the actual exams.
