He is a good teacher, very fair. The class overall is hard. there is allot of memorization req. Its French revlt and Napolionic Era, allot of things happened back then. He specializes in this field and wrote a few books on it so dont BS on papers.
Brown is a very arrogant professor. His manner and treatment of other students is very unprofessional. He is a disgrace to his department and university.
His class on the French Revolution and Napoleon was interesting and enlightening, and Prof. Brown really known his sh**! However, he entered in his personal political beliefs into lecture too much, and he is rather arrogant. The books were also crappy.
Professor Brown is extremely knowledgable and a joy to listen to. The class was challenging, but students were presented with so much information that they were never at a loss for material to draw on. Take this class.
While an expert in French history Professor Brown comes across as very rude and arrogant. This is a guy with a serious attitude problem
Agree with last reviewer--he is VERY rude and arrogant, and goes out of his way to torment graduate students. Avoid.
Prof. Brown a great scholar, he is tough but will teach you a lot.
Definately one of the best professors I have ever had at any school! He is very intelligent and interesting. Classes flew by very quickly. Yes, he is demanding, but why go to school if you don't want to be challenged?
I loved this class. It wasn't easy, I worked my butt off, but Prof. Brown is capable of making and hour and a half lecture fly by. Be prepared to write alot. If you're interested in the subject and are prepared to work I highly recommend this class.
His French Rev. and Napoleon class is hard! Tons of reading and also makes us watch old French movies outside of class. Illegible handwriting! Who writes crusive anymore! Especially on the board.
If you take one of his classes, make sure you haven't taken another class pass/fail, cause you might need to. His lectures are great, he's really engaging and interesting, but his tests are HARD! Grading system based ALOT on homeworks, they're 24% of grade, 10 page paper, midterm and final.
As a history major, I expect a certain amount of work, but really.. He pushes you way over the limit, I had to take this class P/F on the premise I thought I'd flunk. Lectures are rapid fire and in depth, and his themes are interesting, connections to modern times are cool, but he is a tough prof.
Professor Brown sucks, bottome line. He gives waaaaay too much work and his lectures contain too much information too quickly. Also, the guy writes like 50 names/terms/places on the board in the most illegible cursive. His class ruined my semester. He wont even let students take a bathroom break...
In a word- JERK! I hated this professor!. Brown is arrogant and just plain mean to his students. He speaks too fast, throwing too much information around, and his board writing is illegible. He enjoys humiliating his students and grades too harshly. Take pass/fail, if you have to take it at all
Brown's great and very helpful, but challenging! Tons of reading, lots of notes. You'll learn so much if you work hard. Know French, and he'll make you research in it for the paper. Should get at least a B if you try hard. Great if willing to work a lot, horrible while taking another hard class.

His handwriting is horrific! And sometimes his French-Canadian accent which sounds weird. Also you have to go to these mandatory films every other week outside of class. He's strict so don't fall asleep in class cause he'll yell at you & kick you out. Also know your material he calls on anyone.
He's probably the best in the department. Without a doubt the best lecture style and overall clearest lecturer in the dept. He is very demanding, but his reading questions and lectures were extraordinarily thought provoking. Toughest professor in the dept, best bet take P/F and learn alot without worrying about low grades.
Unbelievably arrogant and condescending.Readings and Discussions were interesting.Speaks ridiculously fast in lectures and is often unclear.Lectures are based on his own hypotheses which he pulls completely out of his A*S, he always argues against history. Not helpful at all.Grades very hard.Do not expect anything above a B.
If you are very interested in the subject and willing to work really hard and learn alot then he will be your favorite professor. If you are looking for a gen-ed or easier class then you will struggle. He singles out the students who don't work hard in class. Don't expect anything higher than a C if you do not work especially hard on everything!
Dr. Brown is one of the best professors at this university and you should feel priveleged to be taught by such a brilliant man. Anyone who says he is condescending is right...excuse him for being annoyed by lazy college kids who want to do nothing and get A's. I have taken two of his classes and recieved A's in both. COLLEGE IS meant to be hard
Brown is my favorite history professor. He's tough, and expects a lot from you, but if you like history, you won't mind the work load. My intro history class I'm in right now involves more work (we're reading 200 pages a week, compared to Brown's 100) than his upper level classes I've taken, so don't be afraid of him! Oh, and homework is a biggie, so don't blow it off!
Good prof. Always energetic. Keeps the topics interesting.
Very good professor. Don't expect an easy grade.
He is a great teacher. he knows whathe is talking about, but he is rigid and expects alot from you. so be prepared to do a decient amount of work. But if you are interested in history at all take his class it is worth it.Totally the best teacher that i have had at Binghamton
he is not good. I am not from America and does he not like us in his class.he is not fair and I am not happy with his class..
Whoever made that last post is a moron. Sorry; had to be said. First off Brown is CANADIAN. Secondly, I'm sorry, but discussion and ability to communicate is key...not knowing english is something I am sure he is sympathetic about but, as is his character, he won't sacrifice quality teaching for anything (including an easy grade!). Great but tough!
Professor Brown is hard but fair. His class is not an EZ A but he provides lenient assignment policies that balance out his hard tests. He wants you to learn the material, and at the end you won't be ripped off b/c It takes a 78 to get B. 84 for B+ & 88 for A- and 92 for A. He knows his stuff and occassionally makes fun of whoever is in power.
He is pompous.
Masterful lecturer, I was never once bored in his 1.5-hour long class. Good sense of humor, too. His class is a lot of work, and his tests are tough, but more than anything he is fair with his paper and assignment policies. I would definately recommend his class to history majors.
His class is fun. It is nice to listen to him. However there are a lot of stuff to do. I am an international student and readings were sometimes too much and difficult for me. To get a good grade from a term paper is really the hard. But he is a wonderful professor! i would take another course from him.
It seems like Brown hates his students. It seems like he wants them to fail. Comes off as very cold. On the possitive note, you will learn a lot in this class.
Very arrogant and condescending. A very poor teacher who who grades and treats students unfairly. Does not mind yelling and belittling students in class for even the most minor of reasons. I find it shocking that this Professor is the chair of the department.
Lectures take up all class without any notes, so be prepared to fill out many pages of notes nonstop. He is interesting though and easy to follow. He dedicates a fair part of your final grade for weekly assignments and you only have to do 5/9 of them. Overall really fair gave me a lot of help in office hours. Stay up on pace and you will be fine.
Great teacher. Super hard tests but it is not difficult to get a good grade if you pay attention. This class requires work but you will love Brown as a professor after his class. Genius in his field.
Really great professor, really knows his subject matter. Class is lecture based with some outside readings every week. Not an easy A, but he's a fair grader (tough tests and a research paper). I highely reccomend taking a class with him.
Quite knowledgeable on the subject but is somewhat arrogant. Biggest problem is that his final paper grading system makes no sense and is very counter-intuitive while being excessively difficult. Class is rewarding but not enough to justify taking it. Ultimately he makes the class more difficult through a over-complicated final paper.
Single best professor in binghamton. Not an easy class, but if you do the readings and pay attention in class you'll do fine. Brown is also absolutely brilliant. If you're a history major, you're missing out if you dont take a class with him
Professor Brown is extremely knowledgeable in his field; he is a brilliant instructor. However, his grading system is insane, it as if he is not trying to promote student success, he is more concerned with making it his primary objective to express his brilliance. He is by no means, an easy professor!
I could not find by what historicans he was influenced. Which annoyed me very a lot.
Advice for any future Graduate protégéadvisee under his tutelage: If still an undergraduate, double minor in French language and French history. Instead of majoring in History, major in Political Science, Philosophy or Sociology. He expects his Graduate Students to be highly informed in Philosophical, Sociological and Political Theory.
Way too hard especially if you're just taking it for a gen ed. or as an elective! Mandatory screen filmings just about every week and his insanely hard tests and grading criteria is what made me drop this course. Very mean and arrogant as well. AVOID him at all costs!
Absolutely rediculous. This is the professor that asked his TA to grade this way, minus one point for each spelling mistake. So if you used "is" instead of "Was", 1 point off. You can get deducted 100 points off if 100 of these are found. He is just aweful aweful professor, I have never never seen or heard any professor like that in the world!
As a high school history teacher, I try to emulate Prof. Brown's lecture style and delivery. His well planned lectures always made me feel that I was experiencing the time period directly and living through history. He inspired my career and taught me that my arguments mean nothing without evidence and many other things I try to teach my students.
The Good: He is extremely knowledgeable in his field. His sense of humor can be amusing. The Bad: He is quite arrogant. He won't hesitate to embarrass students in class. His tests are VERY hard. There's a ton of reading. Lectures can be dry and aren't very coherent. The bad outweighs the good. Wouldn't take a class w/ him again.
This guy knows his stuff better than any professor I've ever had. His lectures are enthralling and he presents the information in a way that is inherently interesting. You are required to take two tests and write a research paper. He comes off quite arrogant, but it is deserved. You will become a better history writer in this course.
Professor Brown is extremely professional expects the same from his students. His classes are not easy, and he can be a bit arrogant. Prepare to decipher his handwriting. He writes in script and in French. Also, he does not let you use the restroom during class, something I found unbearable (you'll never find a female professor doing the same).
The best way I can describe Professor Brown is hard but also fair and engaging. His lectures are incredibly interesting and he is very well informed. He can come off as arrogant but honestly its deserved. His tests and papers can be very hard so pay attention during class.
Professor Brown is one of the most engaging and insightful professors I've encountered. He is very professional and does expect that from students, however he is more approachable than he may seem. He is passionate and extremely knowledgeable and has been willing to aid me with material both relevant and irrelevant to the course. 10/10
Prof. Brown is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. This course did not only contributed to my understanding of Early-Modern Europe, but also widened my knowledge on different things, ranging from historical methodology and historiography. For those who loves history, this class is a MUST!
Dr. Brown is a wonderfully articulate professor and cares that his students learn as much as they can in his class. He makes the three hours fly by and knows how to steer class discussion so that students remain on point and always leave class knowing more than they did when class started. I would recommend taking a class with Dr. Brown.
If you like history, Prof. Brown is a must.
This course was very intense in both the amount of content and grading style. However, Dr. Brown knows what he is doing. He teaches how to study history in addition to teaching actual events and made me a better student. However, the course was so content and detail heavy that it was hard to do well. He's also Canadian so your grade curves up!!
If you're not a history major, don't take anything with Brown. Having taken several 300+ history classes at Bing, I can say Brown's classes are far more difficult than any others I've taken. Expect to fail if you don't put in a lot of work/have no interest in the subject. The only upside is he's a much better teacher than most other profs at Bing.
Doctor Brown is a brutally difficult teacher, but he is also the most informative and interesting lecturer I have had at Binghamton. I have learned more in a few weeks of lecture in his classes than some entire semesters of other classes. If you want to really learn about history, and are willing to suffer a bit, his classes are more than worth it.
The French Revolution class was the hardest course I have taken at Bing.
Hard but not for the sake of being challenging in itself. Lectures are smart, knowledgeable, and engaging. If you take it seriously it is very rewarding
This man is both arch nemesis and master oogway of early modern history at the same time. The trials and tribulations I went through this class is crazy. Blood, sweat, and tears. Do NOT take if you're not a history major. Most difficult history class I have and probably will ever take as undergrad, idk how I did it as a sophomore. Loved it tho
Awful history professor
Good professor and lecturer, but overshadowed by his obnoxious attitude and passion for embarrassing students. Honestly a cruel person who needs a little bit of a reality check, and can be extremely difficult to listen to at times. Unfortunate because he really is extremely knowledgeable and a pretty good teacher and lecturer outside of that.
Obnoxious, conceited, and a generally terrible person. He has a passion for embarrassing students (no bathroom breaks & you will be cold called on in his class). However, he is EXTREMELY brilliant and the basics he teaches you is stuff every HIST major should know. If you have P/F left, take it w/o worrying about the GPA killer, if not steer clear.
There is so much I can say, but essentially, he enjoys embarrassing his students, is cruel and obnoxious, calls on people randomly in class, and his exams are quite difficult to study for because you have to cover so much material. He gets a major power trip out of being a professor when nothing is stopping him from being lenient and understanding.
If you care about your mental health and social life don't take this course with Brown. You have to read, buy, and take notes on a 200 page book every week single spaced. A book review he gives no instruction on. A 15 page final paper 35% of your grade. Grades you on every grammatical mistake you make. There's more to say but DON'T take his class.
Taking a Brown class is a gauntlet. On the one hand, he will ensure you learn more than any other professor. But you'll need to work for it. I think every history major should take one of his courses before leaving bing, simply for the self development. However, prepare to earn the self development. You'll hate him pretty much until the final.
He shouldn't be an undergraduate professor. His grading is super tough for both exams and papers. As a history major, I have done more work for this class than any other and received a pretty low grade. I have tried talking to him and he can be insensitive. He can be rude sometimes and I wouldn't recommend this class to anyone.
As an envi major, I am so wildly out of my element in this class, as he is a harsh grader and takes it very seriously. A large amount of reading and writing is required for this class, and you better pay attention in lectures. That being said, I love him as a professor and you can tell he cares about what he teaches.
Dr. Brown is, in my honest opinion, a genius on what he teaches (and very smart on everything else). I've taken two classes with him. He is a heavy assigner of weekly reading and is a terribly harsh grader (although I've only seen A's (not to brag)) His biggest goal is always to see you come out knowing as much as possible. He's the best!
Howard consistently displayed a condescending attitude towards students, often belittling us. Instead of fostering a supportive environment, he seemed more interested in asserting their superiority and intelligence. Overall, I was left feeling discouraged as a student, I would caution others to be prepared for a challenging unpleasant experience.
I almost dropped his class the first week and I'm so glad I didn't. He is incredibly knowledgable & his lectures are amazing but his class is a pretty big commitment. Lots of reading, high expectations, and you really need to be prepared for class. I learned so much though. His personality can be intense.
Definitely not an "easy: professor, but the effort you put in to his class is so rewarding! He is extremely knowledgeable and you will learn at ton from his lectures. If you are looking for an easy gened this might not be the class for you, but if you care at all about being interested in content or gaining knowledge I highly recommend Dr. Brown.
I took two classes with Dr. Brown, which shows that he is an excellent professor that you will gain so much from if you don't get scared away by the other ratings and the first few weeks of class! In the end, he cares that his students learn and grow, which is refreshing and encouraging. he is the best!
HIST 102A SO MUCH READING if you want to do relatively well on the tests. Generally not that difficult if you do the giant amount of readings/films and completely pay attention in lecture. Lecture is kind of hard to follow, but you get the jist of it if you read the textbook prior. This was kind of harder than I would have preferred for a Gen Ed.
Mannn you can't use the bathroom in his class😭
Brown's class was pretty difficult and the TAs grade pretty hard. But he is lowkey very passionate about History and his lectures are pretty engaging and insightful.
Incoherent at times when lecturing and overall an apathetic teacher. The textbook is very important to read every week. He is very strict with deadlines and usually have NO exceptions. His tests are very difficult. Do not recommend 102A as a gen ed for non-History majors or even history majors.
Dr. Brown is my favorite professor I've had at Binghamton. I've taken him in multiple courses. I would recommend Dr. Brown to any student who is serious about improving his writing, reading, and listening skills. But in Dr. Brown's courses, he is preparing you for more than just the subject at hand, but for your further studies and life in general.
By far the most rewarding class I've taken. The course load is very intense, but I believe every history major should take a course with Dr. Brown at one point. He will make you a better reader, writer, and thinker. He is extremely passionate about what he does which makes taking his courses all the more fulfilling.
You can tell Professor Brown is a smart guy however the class was so unnecessarily difficult for a introductory history class as each week there are readings for the textbook plus additional readings with some films being assigned every other week. The midterm and final paper were graded so strict and you can't even use the bathroom in his class.
This professor is a great lecturer and taking notes is very important. But the class is also very textbook heavy , around 60ish pages each week with the chapter's respective questions to be answered and discussed in a discussion. The midterm and final were hard but the class was a positive experience. Overall, you get what you put into the class.
Very difficult for a 100 level, a sizable page of hw with a lot of reading (and sometimes a movie) per week. You can tell he knows a lot and cares a lot about the material so the lectures are so important and useful. He grades reasonably but the midterm and final are pretty difficult if you don't seriously study.
Be prepared to work hard regardless of what class of his you take. Smart guy but his ego makes class insufferable. Not allowed to leave class for any reason, and speaking during class illicits a reminder that he is the most important person in the room. Long readings every week, the content isn't posted on brightspace so if ur absent ur outta luck.
Overall, I believe Professor Brown is very knowledgeable but quite strict. As a student-athlete, I would advise against taking this class as a General Education requirement. He failed to sign the paper that is needed for student-athletes, and he tends to give lower grades due to absences, even if those absences are related to sports!
I'm afraid he is my favorite professor I've ever had at Bing. This is the second class of his that I have taken. He is so strict and his classes are difficult but you will 1000% leave much smarter than you started. I am a better reader, writer, and student for his classes. He is so so so intelligent. But I will admit he can be a bit much lol
This professor is the worst one I have ever had in Binghamton. If I had to retake this class I would with any other professor in Binghamton. This professor should be fired expeditiously from Binghamton. Never take this class in Binghamton. That's all, just never take the class!
Professor Brown is an intelligent man, and he'll make sure you know it! His class is very interesting, but the level at which he holds his students is insane. He is very strict, doesn't allow bathroom breaks, and insults his students if they're not paying attention. I would advise avoiding his class and him entirely as a professor.
This was the worst history class I have taken. Dr. Brown expects you to be able to remember volumes of information word for word, doesnt have any sort of written powerpoint, and gives no study guides. His TA grades extremely harshly, but the discussion sections he leads are unengaging and he doesn't seem to have a full grasp on the content either.
He is challenging, for sure. But, the challenges are not artificial, meaning they are not because professor is trying to be difficult. If you embrace the readings, and the tough grading not as an obstacle but as a means to grow, you are going to get A LOT! Learn from him, instead of fighting him.
I took his experiencing war class 1400-1918 and as a history major it was a TON of reading. I dreaded reading all of it but the content was great and Howard Brown knows what he's talking about. He expects you to know about 80% of the readings. 1 20pg paper and book review were the only assignments. 8/10 good class, worth taking if you like war.
