Howard is a good teacher, but in an early morning class he doesn't use a mic so it is easy to fall asleep. The lectures are long and sometimes not the most clearly explained. He is EXTREMELY accesible. He is constantly holding office hours and cares about the students.

D'Abrera is reall willing to work with everyone he can in order to help them do their best. Lectures are rather boring but the material isn't too tough.

Professor D'Abrera cares a lot about class attendance as it would really benefit our learning. He would give pop quizzes if class attendance isn't improved. Practice questions are not mandatory, but are recommendable. A lot of our practice questions will appeared similarly in quizzes. In terms of Calculus, it is tested but not a huge part of test.

If you go to lecture and do the homework you will be fine. His reader is all the notes for the semester compiled together and that is what he lectures off of. His tests will be challenging but definitely fair and doable. Honestly he wasn't good at going over the calculus we needed before testing us on it so be prepared to do some substantial review

Professor D'Abrera is a really nice. Can tell he cares about his students and has passion for the subject. However, the class is easy to get behind in and fairly tough. Tests require combining all different subjects together. You really have to have a deep understanding of what's going on and a strong foundation.

Professor D'Abrera is very approachable and welcoming. You should definitely take advantage of his office hours. He gives additional lectures on Excel during the semester. Though Excel Labs are not mandatory, they are extremely helpful for those who don't know how to operate the program. Excel formulas are tested in the quizzes and midterm.

Material learned in this class is not for the weakhearted. You will rely on the textbook to learn concepts. Although his lectures are early, make sure you attend because there are pop quizzes. Proffesor D'Abrera's lectures were engaging and easy to understand and I highly recommend going to class. He's a great professor, very funny and clear but expects students to work HARD. It is manageable if you put lots of time and effort reading both textbook and reader and solve as many problems as you can(which will need LOTS of time!). However, the quizzes and tests have lots of questions and given short time. It is IMPOSSIBLE to even look at all the questions in midterm! Never skip lectures.

There were two different versions of midterms and they were clearly on different difficulty level. Hope u lucky to get the easier one.

The quizes are fair, if you study you will do OK. However, the mid term is very tough. He likes to scare you off with the calculus material which other stat 20 class doesnt include.

Professor D'Abrera is a great professor but he expects quite a lot from his students. Attendance in discussion is mandatory but some GSIs aren't very helpful. Go to lecture, take good notes on your reader, seek help, AND GO OVER CALC! He has one question on the midterm and supposedly one on the final but doesn't teach the concepts.

Professor D'Abrera's class requires hard work and persistence. You have to be willing to seek out help in office hours and put in a lot of time. The course is definitely a great learning experience. I took Math 16A last semester, the calculus prerequisite, however, I would recommend taking more calculus before enrolling in this class.

This is one of those classes where if you attend all the lectures, do all the homework (even though it is entirely optional) and keep asking questions, you're probably going to get an A. But be warned, it is definitely not an easy class. The midterm and final are known to be hard. Even if you understand the concept, the questions asked can be hard

Professor D'Abrera is really nice, he gives us chocolate cookies in section sometimes. He is helpful and always asking for feedback on his teaching. He moves a little too fast in lecture though, and so less students have been attending lecture. However, he provides us with a reader with his lecture notes and practice problems that are very helpful.

Definitely cares about students. Go to lecture so you know what to study for midterms and quizzes. Can't slack off too much in this class, but you do learn a lot

He's a great lecturer which helps in an 8am class! Though the class have some material that seem forced and somewhat extraneous that would help future stats majors but not many other people! Freshen up on calculus and some good excel skills! The class can be hard for some but if you're willing to work for it, it'll be fine! Good luck :)

Lectures are very helpful as the professor highlights the areas that will be on the quizzes and exams. (So attend lec!) Discussions are not as helpful but sometimes going through problems in can be useful. Tests are lengthy so be sure to first do all problems that you can. The class is overall not challenging but be sure to ace the quizzes!

Quizzes were very fair. Professor's lectures are clear and easy to follow, which gave me a good understanding of statistics. The midterm was tough because we were short on time. This class was rather helpful in understanding parts of my microeconomics and math classes. Recommend taking it with Prof D'Abrera.

Professor D'Abrera always tries his best to help out students. Making the reader and holding Excel labs are things that have made the class easier. The quizzes are very reasonable and with some studying everyone can get a high score. The exam was tough but fair. Again, with some studying the exam was not too bad.

Professor D'Abrera is very intelligent and kind. I enjoyed his lectures for the most part. My GSI wasn't very helpful all semester and found it hard to keep up. I started going to the head GSI and he basically saved my life. Most of the quiz questions come from highly recommended hw problems, but there isn't an answer key which sucks. Cool class.

But don't let that make you complacent! study for each quiz, and know the material WELL for the midterm.

Professor D'Abrera is a really intelligent and nice guy. My only complaint about his class is the emphasis he places on calculus. Calc is not a prerequisite and was barely covered in the class but he refers to it as if it were a necessity. The ONLY place it is used is on the tests, it is nowhere to be found elsewhere. The language in the tests and the language in the text book are very different. You must understand the subject matter conceptually in order to do well in the quizzesmidterm. The material is such that you could teach yourself, but attending section, SLC study group, and office hours are a must if you want an A. I found that SLC tutoring was extremely helpful. He doesn't assign homework, but you should solve all the problems. I spent about an hour and a half each day on homework. A solid knowledge of Calc is a must.

Great lecturer provides a reader with notes we can annotate instead of copying. Clear, concise, and assumes nothing about our previous background in stats. But class has some strange and frustrating quirks. Warned us all semester about "calculus questions," but spent just 2 lectures on the material. Write your name on all exam pages or points off.

He is by far one of the best teachers I have ever hard. No one can make Statistics sound so interesting. You need to work hard to earn an A. Tests are pretty easy if you go through all he material in detail and work through all the recommended problems he assigns. He also cares about his students and will go out of his way to help them.

He is a good professor, but his tests are hard and you don't have enough time to think. You either know the information or you don't on a test. He is right when he says that this class isn't for the "faint-hearted". Work hard and you should get a good grade.

Overall the class was not too hard as long as you read the textbook. His test questions are similar to the homework questions and his tests are pretty fair. Homework is never graded. He's an understanding guy that cares about his students and wants them to do well. Lectures are based off of his notes, which are a bit strange so to follow the notes you need to go to lecture (although, you can probably figure it out on your own).

The math is actually easy it is the wording that makes this class difficult. The quizzes are cumulative so you CANT slack off. There is a lot of material and that is what is hard about the class. For the calc part review it early. He teaches the stats with calc a couple of days before the midterm so there is absolutely NO time to review.

Quite an amusing character. He uses a reader which really helps since you don't have to focus on writing notes from scratch. Tests are quite hard, but he prorates scores (i.e. your worst quiz is dismissed, your final grade can substitute your midterm grade if it is higher).

STATS 20 is an overview of Statistic and Probability. There are many components and they are hard to learn well. One really should attend all the lectures, labs, office hours, and should got to a study group or the SLC too. He doesn't provide an answer key for the tests which can be frustrating. The class is basic and boring. Having taken some really tough courses at Berkeley I am disappointed at how little understanding this class demands from its students. Professor D'Abrera tries his best though and its not really his fault that the standards for Stat20 are so low.

Professor D'Abrera genuinely cares about his students. His quizzes are fair and he tries to schedule long office hours the day before quizzes. There's only one midterm that covers like 75% of the material and the grading rubric is super strict, but the questions were pretty fair, in my opinion.

Clearly cares about his students and holds plenty of office hours. The class is very easy for anyone coming from an engineering background; much easier than AP Stats. The reader is too crowded and not useful; I feel the reader can be replaced with a pamphlet containing just the crucial informationequations, or a reader like the one Hilfinger uses.

D'Abrera genuinely cares about teaching statistics. He holds a ton of office hours, publishes an extensive reader for the course, and brings Tim Tams to discussion sections when he visits Australia. Quizzes are fair, midterm was hard, but overall he's a great professor. Complaints levied against him on this website are unfair and exaggerated.

Please, ignore some comments saying "this is too hard." I think they are not ready to be college students, seriously. There is no way to study in easy way at least in UC Berkeley. If you study hard for every quizzes, you will be fine for tests. The class is easy to understand, the professor is really passionate and dedicated to his students.

Honestly, I truly appreciate Professor D'Abrera's class and although my midterms were heartbreaking I will make sure to still come to his lectures. He is SUPER caring towards his students and holds amazingly long office hours. QuizzesTests are hard. Statistics is not easy, please be wise to do a lot of reading, practicing and asking GSIhimself.

And, I really wanna suggest people to disregard some comments here. I'm a transfer student from CC, and I think this course is EASY! Tests are not hard at all if you are already at Cal. Prof is nice, very dedicated. I don't know why I'm so emotional now but I feel so bad for prof Dabrera and some awful peers who don't even realize their problems!

And, he's not forcing us to rate him good! But, should u complain about microphone problem even tho you already know it's bc of his ear problem that he can't use it? Should you complain about tests bc ur just not putting effort? I came from Asia and I'm so confused now. I don't understand the way students treat their teachers in the US! So bad!

He is a great professor. I don't understand why so many students don't like him. He is really helpful. But he is really stubborn and ridiculous sometimes. He did not say to put name on each page but still take points off. He decided not to finish teaching just because he received some bad comments. But he is helpful and gives snacks. Iwill miss him

Professor D'abrera gives his students many chances to do well. He leaves it up to them to decide how they will do. Its very important to attend all lectures because the course is somewhat fast paced. Exams are difficult, however there are a lot of resources at hand that will help you to do well. He is a very kind man and will help anyone who asks.

Professor D'Abrera, do come back! Many students want you to finish lecturing this course!

A really nice prof., who cares about his student A LOT. He gave students many chance and resource to do well in this class. I have to clear that HE DO NOT ASK US TO GIVE HIM GOOD RATE instead of he just wants us to answer some common questions for him. On the midterm, he did tell us to write our name on EACH SINGLE PAGE, and it's on the instruction

Well! How to do well on the quizes? You just simply go ask the early sections, coz they are pretty much the same, that why many ppl in late section get a higher score! (Quizzes are 30%) Midterm, all failed; don't worry, final will replace it. Just keep calm :) professor, please come back, we miss you!

There are 2-3 "poor" reviews that have statedinsinuated that the prof has bribedmanipulated students to give good reviews for easier test questions. These students clearly did not read a simple, unambiguous email correctly. The prof told us to answer other student's questions on RMP in trade for discarding one hard question. My god, poeple.

I suck at math & I hate math, but honestly this class is not hard at all! I'm a transfer student and most ppl around do pretty well. Easy to get 2730 in quizzes, even though the midterm is more diffcult, 23 students are able to get higher score in final & replace midterm score:) Professor cares abt us a lot, if you work hard, at least will get B.

He is a very helpful. He tries his best to help his students. However, if you are not good with calculus "don't take his class". 45 points out of 180 points for our final exam. That's too much for students are not going to be Stat major. Most students are trying to declare Econ not Stat. I don't understand why he put so many point on calculus.

Although the midterm,the final, and the class in general was difficult, I felt that this class not only increased my knowledge about statistics and its practically in the real world, but also how to study material and prepare effectively at the level that Berkeley demands. You have to put in the work to get the grade you want. Plain and simple.

The professor was really nice and knowledgeable, but unfortunately, I had decided to overload on units and other time commitments this semester. Like any other class, if you fall behind it's difficult to catch up and what you put in will be what you get. After the final, I'm hoping for a B but fearing a C that will ruin any shot at grad school...

Prof. D'Abrera is a very dedicated teacher. Lectures are clear, especially the reader is very helpful. As long as you are prepared before the class, you will learn a lot. He also offers tons of office hours! Quizzes are easy, tests are a little challenging, especially final - but doable. Overall, I love this class because I really learned a lot!

He is a very enthusiastic teacher, and goes over materials clearly. If you want to do well in the class, make sure you go to lecture and don't fall behind.

Prof D'Abrera is a very good professor. he really care about his students and hold a lot of office hours to answer students' questions. If you wanna have a good grade, go every class and do the high recommend question as a homework. In a word, he is really a good professor, take his class!

The professor is clear, concise, and helpful during lecture. I thought that the quizzes, midterm, and final were fair. This class was a good introduction to statistics in my opinion. I would take it again with this professor. To do well in this class, I did textbook problems that were recommended by the professor. Similar problems were on tests.

The class wasn't too hard. As long as you understood the concepts (whether that was by going to class or reading the textbook) and did some practice problems, it was fine. I would take the class with Professor D'Abrera again. His grading is reasonable and fair.

I don't understand the level of immaturity shown by so many students at UC Berkeley. Shame on them for misrepresenting a professor because if their inadequacies. The class was not easy, but it's college. Quizzes are easy. Midterm and final are tough, but curve is forgiving. Professor is kind and helpful. I hope to sit in on his lectures next semest

Quizzes are not hard but midterm and final were, generous on curving though. Try to do all practice problems and you'll be good.

Professor D'abrera is an intelligent, caring professor who honestly took me from knowing nothing about statistics to feeling pretty confident about my understanding of the discipline. Go to lecture (especially because he does pop quizzes) and go to office hours if you can, because Howard is helpful and you may just get some cookies from him :)

In order to do well in this class, you should probably attend all lectures as well as review the materials from textbook and his reader and most importantly attend his office hours. Prof D'brera is very helpful and nice and gives out many options for office hours. Not only will you learn more and get cookies, but you will also learn more about him

To the people who slander the professor by saying he forced us to give him reviews, you should all be ashamed of yourselves. It is no wonder you're all complaining about doing poorly in this man's class for misunderstanding his suggestion. The point of the reviews was to help FUTURE students. That just goes to show this man's character. He's great.

This class was tough and makes you work for it if you want a good grade. However, Professor is always there for you if you need any help! i believe he had the most office hours our of all my professors (with yummy tim tams!) We had 8AM class so it was difficult. I would say this class was good overall!

After reading a recent post that has made Howard look as if he's the reincarnation of Hades, I beg to differ and believe he has done a dedicated, if not decent, job in teaching this course. He is a hard test giver, but his questions are fair and well-mentioned in class. His reader is intuitive, well-organized and easily comprehensible in lectures.

He is clear when it comes to lectures. He has a reader that has all of the notes, you just follow along.I feel like taking notes is a part of the learning process and that its taken away in this class. The midterm was unrealistic. There were WAY to many questions for time, creating panic. He puts calculus on the midterm and it was EXTREMELY hard

He is a good professor, it's just that he makes this 8 am mandatory by giving pop quizzes (worth 7% of the grade). I feel like most of the class would learn better if only the class were webcasted or at some later time. With that said, despite difficult tests, the class is fairly curved and the professor is very accommodating in office hours.

Although I am part of the group who did not like his exams, my opinion of him really changed based on the final (other than the Calculus challenge questions part). He does his best to teach you with the reader so class time moves by quickly. The only thing that I would like are the Calculus related theory bits to be added. Take if you can.

The professor is clearly interested in teaching. 8am class so a lot of people skip, although there are pop quizes. Reader is a must have. Lectures are based off of the reader, and usually is ok in terms of pace. The calculus problems on the tests are really the tough portion of the midterm+final, I wish he spent more time on them.

He's a tough professor but fair. As long as you study, do the readings, and work with your gsi you should be fine. If you out the effort in you will do well in this class.

Prof D'abrera truly cares about his students. He wants you to succeed and is always willing to help. Very approachable and has many office hours. He answers questions with utmost clarity. It's also very important to go to lecture and section. There is no homework but definitely try the practice problems in the book and reader. Highly recommend

Professor Howard genuinely cares about his students, but you have to work hard yourself and go to one of his or the GSIs' very long office hours when you get stuck. His tests, which are heavily concept-based, are hard but fair. Go to lectures as that's when the reasoning behind the statistical methods is explained. A MUST: know your calculus.

Professor Howard is a nice and caring professor. He is always ready to students because he wants his students to succeed. He provides special tutoring for those students that want extra help. There is no homework, but recommended problems. He has a reader with lecture notes, which makes it easier to follow along in class.
