fantastic teacher!
Reading is hard, essays are easy
One of the best teachers I've had due to the reason that he challenges a student's mind and makes one learn general knowledge about the world. It takes a little time to get to know him and adapt to his style of teaching.
Seems to have power issues and may single out someone in class to pick on and use as an example for the rest of the semester. Difficult to argue with & somewhat cynical. However, very interesting and forces you to look at the world in a different light.
He challenges your way of thinking (in a good way). You'll need a sense of humor if you want to enjoy his lectures. His grading policy is fair - but the essays he assigns are difficult.
Needs to relax and remember that as a professor of higher learning, he needs to welcome and encourage difrence in opinion and debate. If you want to get along in his class, leave your brain at the door.
Very interesting, but at times I was afraid to comment.
Awesome class.
No problemo!!! Great class.
very good teacher
Fine teacher.
I like this teacher.
I have been immensly insulted few times in my life, once was in Hertz's class. He needs to leave his psychoanalysis practice outside the classroom and probably needs to apologize to his children.
Not always the kindest or most tactful, but when he is "on" -- incredible. Worth the manic ride
He is the best teacher I've ever had in my entire schooling. Promotes critical thinking. I learned more about myself in his class than I did in my entire life. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommended!!!
this teacher is very harsh and mean, but most of all he is very BLUNT. he does not care, but hurt and insult students.
I have had Hertz for practically all of my English calsses while I was there... Dr. Hertz totally rocks.... He nearly peed himself when Gulf War I started... almost had to be restrained
i had no problems with him the class was very easy and his grading is also easy one thing i didn't enjoy was how he talked for two hours straight, if you enjoy taking naps in class this is the one to take
Take his class he will change your life! Brings amazing insight into lectures, selection of reading is smart, very understanding person. You learn about yourself, life, literature. The critical thinking that goes on in his classes is intense and rewarding
A very wise preofessor. His class keeps you thinking. You learn A LOT! It can get challenging, but it's worth it.

If you are not afraid to be afraid,he is amazing!
THE BEST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. Insightful, thought-provoking, intelligent and stimulating. If you like to think, he is the one to take.
This class is not for slakers who want to pass by with a C grade. He is not an easy teacherand he can be scary at times..but other than that Hertz knows how to teach and the idea of just reading one book and analizing it from every possible angle is cool
he talks for two hours straight.. he belittles people's beliefs and he's a bit of an a**hole about being tardy. don't take his class
Highly controversial teacher. makes you think and will grab you away from your comfort zone and confront you with a whole new perspective and twist on things. He'll definitely make you work for the grade but you do learn a lot.
GREAT TEACHER, IF YOU ARE NOT AFRAID TO LEARN TAKE HIM, HE WILL HAVE YOU QUESTIONS REALITY!!!
If you think it's possible for someone to be excessively over-analytical, this is that person... but if you don't have a problem with picking apart great literature in an effort to fully understand it, then this class will definitely be to your liking.
btw i took this over the winter...Hertz is boring sometimes. At other times, he gets carried away in the material and adds "TOo much info". I survived tho...the key to this class is a Very open mind cuz he will stretch it wide.
Terrible person with bad manners.
He opens up a whole new world...weither or not you want to walk thru it, is of your own choosing
Wonderful, kind-hearted person!Takes the time to know you.Challenging and he really tries to envoke your thoughts. Not a slacker class!Takes role, low tolerance towards tardies and tuences.Must read and write increadible essays!
I took two classes with Hertz close to 20 years ago. He gets you to thinking. He takes an interest in his students who bother to take an interest in their studies. These were not easy classes, but not that hard if you do what is asked of you. Memorable!
Brilliant man -- intimidating, but just to listen to his mind -- my God!
True, after the first essay i felt like i needed to be locked in a room with padded walls, but he takes english to a whole new dimension with the intese questions he asks. It's like taking brain yoga. I do not recommend this class to the closed-minded.
Wow this class makes you think. I learned a lot from this course but i have to say that the critical thinking essays were something. I remember sitting down telling myself i know it but sitting infront my laptop going WTF!! In the end its worth it
he can be really rude. Picks on people that dont love to argue. Verry hard class. the worst i ever took, PERIOD. I dont have a problem or am holding a grudge but this guy is the teacher from hell. people do ur homework on this guy
Hertz doesn't mesh well with some people. But he will more than likely contribute to your growth as a person than any other teacher at PCC. If you take him, read and engage yourself in the class. The lessons will last a lifetime.
excellent professor!
the most influential professor you'll have! Hertz is a brilliant man! you'll understand once you have heard his literary interpretations. you'll marvel at his intelligence!
Dr. Hertz brings the literature of Dante to life through his insightful and engaging lectures. He is intimidating at first, but gives sincere concern to students and their work as he gets to know them. You won't have a chance to get bored in his class.
This Professor gives you the gift of using your mind...Priceless.
he's an amazing professor. i'm taking him right now, and i'm doing really well in his class. he can be mean sometimes, but it's always in a playful way. he wouldn't ever hurt anyone intentionally. he's really gifted.
As others said he makes u think. You cannot do his essays without thinking. I Now know what true thinking is. U might wanna bring a recorder to class cuz alot of what he says, is something u will wanna keep with u as long as u live.
Hertz is SO rude. Would pick on students and when asked to refrain from doing so he would CONTINUE. He was totally disorganized for winter session and crammed his semester syllabus into an unattainable time frame. F- professor
This is the best professor at PCC. As others have said--he's brilliant. He pushes you to think critically and dig deeply into the material. His courses prepared me for UCSB. You can't pull anything over on him so do your work and keep up or you;ll feel overwhelmed. This teacher is a must!
He's a great professor. Its worth taking his class just to hear him lecture. The exams are easy and few, also his essays only require you to write down what you think. He only picks on students that are asking for it, and does so in the most intellectual way possible. I took him for the summer.
He has some very interesting ideas, but if you don't agree with him, you're in trouble. Says he wants you to think for yourself in essays, but actually expects you to just write whatever he tells you. Very unconventional way of teaching - won't prepare you for other English classes.
Dr. Hertz is brilliant! He is one of the best teachers i've had at PCC. His interpretation of Dante is in depth and it makes you think. His essays are easy if you just write down what you think and explain it. Excellent Professor, i definitely recommend him to everyone.
Can we all just admit that as crazy as he is, he's an f-ing genius!?
Dr. Hertz is a BRILLIANT man! not everyone can take his class. only those that are willing 2 look deep into the literature and see multiple interpretations, as he does. Goodness, he will overwhelm you with his ideas! Jot down everything he says, he goes quick, and you may miss something great..
he is like a phych teacher who is teaching an english so be prepared to read a lot for your classes. he is a smart guy and also passionate about the subject being tought. but you can relax in class and he is cool about it.
Hertz looks at lit. from a Freudian, psychoanalytical POV. He's a really brilliant guy and gives fascinating lectures. you can learn a lot not only about the texts but about yourself as well. Sit back, relax and don't let him intimidate you, especially on the first day.
He tries to scare everybody with a mean demeanor but he is nice. That said, he has boring lectures. He speaks in a monotone and just drones on and on. He is fair with essays but his quizzes are hard. In short, take this class if you want a challenge. gives out life advice, helps you learn about self
Hertz is awesome. You have to like psych to take his class though. He'll pick on you but just go with it and don't let him intimidate you. He can be an ass but he's brilliant and if you keep an open mind you'll never forget the stuff you learn in his class. Take him! No, seriously, take him!
Don't take this guy! All he talks about is sex from 10AM. I can't believe this guy. You won't learn anything from this guy except sex. Don't waste your time & money!
He's a great teacher! His teachings are very deep! He has the capacity to expand certain knowledge one attains and makes it relevant to material he is teaching. He sets the standard for a well writer/poet.If you want to be an excellent writer/poet take him!!!!!!!!!!!
He's a pretty good teacher & his lectures are actually very interesting, although very few are boring.U do have to have an open mind as he always expresses what's on his mind an often asks the class to share what's on theirs. He's xcellent!Plenty reading & pshyc.Grades essays unlike most but not hard
boring
Very Good Teacher Knows What He's Talking About & Doesn't Give You Any problems if you don't understand. Just ask. Test are mostly all essay so be prepared to write & read alot.
-take the class if you want to learn - be prepared to do some extensive writing -lectures are quite profound and interesting -hertz can seem intimidating at first but u'll realize he's chill later on.- fair grading - over all GREAT PROFESSOR! take him if you want a quality professor, don't take him if you're lazy and just looking for an easy class.
Brilliant in leading you further down through your personnal ring of hell in dantes inferno...but your on your own in getting back out again.
terrible person! he made at least 3 girls cry by calling them names, he personally insulted me on more than one occasion, and he is obsessed with sex and psychology! i got an A, but i was pissed off - was this an Eng. class or psych/sex ed??? BAD PROF.!
Hertz is great. I'd say too good for community college. He IS very difficult, it's not an easy A. But, if your going to school to actually LEARN something, he will teach you.
I've only had a couple of his sessions this semester and I don't like his teaching style. I'm taking a fiction writing class and I'm a novice. Meanwhile, there are published writers in my class. He doesn't really explain what he wants or give any kind of intro to writing to fiction. Just just right into it. His lectures are boring and too long.
before hertz i hated english and writing. his lectures are great...no ****ting and straight to the point... theres no other professor who can teach Dante better than Hertz!
ever hear of the term projection? It's when someone puts there own expereince into everything around them. That's Hertz for you in a nutshell. He may be helpful at the 1ABC level but at 46A he won't answer your questions. He can't even shut out his own world long enough to know what you've asked.
Dont take English 1C and complain about how things arent clear. Dr. Hertz is incredible, he lectures in such an objective manner and is very to the point. No BS class. Its tough but very doable. Take him if you want to improve your writing and your critical thinking abilities. He's excellent, highly recommended.
This class is awesome. Its really hard at times but its great. He teaches in such a subtley funny way. Only the really smart people know whats up just take him to laugh a lot and then cry when you get assigned crazy essays.
He's an old fart.Great lectures, terrible tests!Too much was put at then end of the semester.RUN AWAY FROM HIS CLASSES! RUN,RUN,RUN!!!!!!
Whp-tish! Massive Shakespeare buff, but a heavy curriculum. Notorious for nightmare exams on defining vocabulary of Shakespeare plays- the ENTIRE vocabulary. 2,000 word papers. Extremely demanding, sometimes insulting. Fair all the same. Encourages you to read into everything. Not a class for the weak/non-English major. Still an accessible teacher.
I think Dr. Hertz may be the best teacher I've ever had. If he teaches Dante again, take the class. Even if you've already had 1A, take it again. It's worth it. He can be a little confrontational at times, and I can imagine some of the slower kids in the class may have been lost. But, He will get you thinking, and he's very positive when grading.
I personally hated him the first 2 months of class. He can be rude at times & I didn't find him funny but somehow I got used to it. The essays - straight to the point, you have to be a good writer b/c he gives no tips. Helpful at times explaining the readings but sometimes he's not and goes off tangent. Many people liked him, I thought he was okay.
No one is better described by the expression "mad genius" than Dr. Hertz. For the right student (hardworking with a thick skin) hes awesome
Dr. Hertz is a great professor--passionate and irreverant. He taught me how to be honest when I write, which is more difficult than it sounds. His mind races and when he gets started you never know what he'll say, or if he'll single you out, but he'll make you think. And feel. He's brilliant and funny. He used to make me laugh and cry.
The man is brilliant, one of my favorite professors ever. Not easy, but such a learning experience being in his class, well worth it, if u want an easy A, not the man, if u want a class you'll look forward to attending, this is it. He's not that hard actually, as long as he sees that ur thinking u'll do fine
Hertz has invaded my dreams- he's THAT powerful. He has an ability to see the truth behind your story. Your work is never "good" or "bad" to him. He sees meaning and value in every story. AND HIS COMMENTARY ON THEM IS UNFORGETABLE. He seems aloof, but because of who he is, that makes me wonder if I'M the aloof one. Brilliant, just brilliant.
It's been a while, but still the most brilliant man I had at PCC -- erratic and wild and fun. I worked my butt off for a B.
The absolutely worst professor ever. He has no respect for students or their experiences and treats them like idiots. His professional jealously doesn't help to make him stand out as an examplary person either. Avoid him like the plague unless you like listening to him call out students in class and/or disrespect people's views.
I found him to be perverse, rude, small-minded, and far from brilliant. Hasn't anyone noticed that he doesn't grade the papers? The handwriting is a woman's. If raunchy sexuality is what you think all writers are writing about, then Hertz should be the professor for you. The class takes little thought. He doesn't encourage free-thinking.
If only i had more space. I can only speak for Eng 6: I must say that some of these past comments seem to be from people that may have taken his criticisms a bit too personally. If you are not one to speak your mind or are afraid to speak your mind then i can see where his encouragment can seem threatening. Please look past it, its all he asks.
I would go through the intensity of the final objective exams again just to sit and listen to his lectures. This man is brilliant. Don't let the work load turn you off. He's amazing and he'll make you want to do well and learn. Take his class if you really want to learn something worthwhile. I love his lectures and his ideas! People wake up!
He seems stuck in some psyco babble of writing. Lets the students do the criticizing (which is fine but limited as their experience of course) he adds his but again so limited. He may be retiring hopefully. He is not published and probably never will be. Those who can't teach!
THE CLASS WAS FUN! THE LECTURES WERE AWESOME! HE ASSIGNED FOUR BOOKS TO READ AND FIVE ESSAYS. HE IS VERY UNDERSTANDING. I EARNED A B, HE PREDICTED THAT I WAS GOING TO STRUGGLE IN THE CLASS. ON THE FIRST MEETING HE REVIEWS AND JUDGES YOUR WRITTING; DON'T BE INTIMIDATED! TAKE A CHANCES AND TAKE HIS ENG 1C.
95% poetry. uses techniques in psychoanalysis to analyze every reading, which makes for interesting lectures, but is typically altogether arbitrary in discovering the true meaning of the authors/readings. discourages discussion and will actually insult students unless their views coincide with his own. he could be better teaching psychology.

What a mind! This professor teaches with passion and is very uncoventional to the way others teach. He doesn't believe in a thesis statement. Do you realize how much work that alone saves? It's no walk in the park, but not impossible. Highly recommended. Unfortunately he's a part-time now.
For better or for worse, you'll never forget him.
It's definitely for better that you'll never forget him, he is a professor who changes lives. He is brilliant, challenging, and the reading he assigns will make you think. He's not the easiest teacher though, and he doesn't suffer fools.
Great teacher! no doubt. But when he goes personal and tries to become your psychoanalysts...things go down hill from there.
Dont take him for a good grade. He is very smart and he is a fun professor. There is not a lot of work, but he is very critical
He's a good teacher easy grading on essays the only thing that is hard is the beginning having to memorize the vocabulary of Othello other than that you'll have to read some poems and novel which is long.
Vocabulary quiz is tough and you need to memorize a lot. Writing is not a hard part in his class. He recommended you to read a lot.
Excellent teacher! Will teach you about life! An average day is combining a novel with everyday understanding of life. Dont take class for easy grade. He's a little tough but ALOT of fun!!
Hertz is an amazing professor that really helped me analyze literature. He takes away much of the superficiality that hinders many students. I know he is retired, but if he ever comes back I highly recommend him-- you'll never forget him. I found that the assigned readings were extremely enjoyable.
One of the best professors I had at La Verne College. We marched with protest signs one spring day in 1973. Those were the days!
Amazing. The best teacher I've ever had in my entire life... and that includes instructors at UC Berkeley.
i cant stress this enough IF U HAVE A CHANCE TO TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES DO IT!!! he will completley change your life. he is awesome & delves deeply into everything considered in class. i have taken other so-called genius professors and he is hands down THE ABSOLUTE BEST. his lecture is more than just passing tests its about improving your life!!!!
Loved this professor. He really did change my life... I took Eng 1A and 1B from him about 7 years ago, and I still think if him from time to time. Excellent. One of the best PCC has ever had.
best professor anywhere
The most inspiring and profound class i have ever taken. A great professor if not the best.
WONDERFUL. I agree with others here- Dr. Hertz definitely changed my life for the better. He opened up my mind and I think about him still. Truly a gifted man, hope he is well.
Dr. Hertz is such an intelligent professor. Very understanding! The only thing I can knock him for is his tendency to stray away from the topic during his lectures, but he is old (and will jokingly remind you), so I can't REALLY blame him. He can be vague sometimes, too. Assuming you can write at a competent level, you will get an A. READ!
Encourages honest writing. Nice interpretations of the readings. If you've been brainwashed by the media, keep your mouth shut. Liked the essays but not the other tests, I've never understood memorizing things for memorizing's sake, am more into meanings. Doesn't teach how to write, you have to wing it but for all I know that may be best.
One of the best professors I ever had. Taught a Proust class some years ago that profoundly affected me as a student AND a writer. Wish he would teach it again.
great human. changed the way I think about things. didnt receive an A got a B, I could have worked a little harder. the readings were awesome and hes just a brilliant professor. he barely teaches anymore so if hes teaching an english class, do not hesitate to take it with him
One of the top three professors I have had in my lifetime. Made me a better writer 10x over. Taught a Proust class many years ago that he needs to teach again, even if he thinks it will do him in! It almost did ME in but I would take it again in a heartbeat.
Took him 3 times for creative writing. He profoundly helped me to become a better writer and to learn how to tell the truth in my work. I then took him for a two semester course on Proust that was just phenomenal (and that he really should teach again).
I took 3 semesters with with Dr. Hurtz. Having him as a professor has been a transformational experience. The tools I got in his class helped me to became a successful professional. His teaching still influences my work. If you thrive when your intellectual abilities flourish, take this class. You will love it.
Do not rush to observe that he goes off topic. He connects the readings to students' personal struggles and realities (not an easy task). I took him over two decades ago, and I still think of him as a transformational, caring, and humane professor. He must also be a great father whose love to his children transcends traditional parental roles.
