Mr Hewett is decent, I mean, how interesting can Ethics be. He REALLY likes class discussion and is a pretty funny guy. I would take him again. The tests are pretty difficult but if you think something's unfair then he'll consider changing it. I've gone to see him at his office hours and he really wasnt that helpful though, other than that hes good
This guy was really funny if you like dry hummor! But his test are pretty hard. It seems easy at first then it gets really hard. The questions are really wordy and he always has to go back and change at least two questions because they were so unclear! Participate in class and you will prob. get a B.
Howard was good professor. His tests are really easy if you study. He gives pop quizzes on reading. So READ!!! Sometimes he was a llittle vague on explaining class discussions, but I would take him again. And he doesn't ask essay questions on tests.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I always study hard, make all A's, and think my classes are pretty easy, but his class is so hard simply because he doesn't know how to teach! He doesn't know how to spell or use correct grammer. He tries to trick you on the tests. There is no way to get an A!

not a fan!!!
pretty hard class. exams are wordy and hard (he tries to trick u). do the reading-pop quiz and they help for the tests. tests are all multiple choice which i liked but still tricky. cool dude-funny at times
he is tough. i liked him but you have to read and make sure you go and take the quizzes that he gives once in a while. You never know when he may give one so be ready. he is tough though. His tests are nearly impossible if you don't study. SO DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS LIGHTLY
Discussions were thought provoking & very well led. He allowed people to express their opinions, but he never tried to put you on the spot. The tests were fairly difficult, only because they were often worded ambiguously, & in philosophy, this can cause questions to have an entirely different meaning than what was intended. Cool & funny guy though!
Terrible. Not funny. Lazy. Uninteresting. Attempts to be the philosopher that he isn't which makes discussion impossibe to follow, and the tests become a "hit and miss" depending on how you read the question. You could honestly argue any question to be corrected, because this guy has not even one raging clue about what he's talking about.
READ the readings. Pop quizzes can kill you. Also the tests aren't as easy as you may expect. Know who wrote about what, not just the arguments and topics you discuss. Know who wrote about what arguments and issues! If you have an option, choose another philosophy class or another teacher. Tests are ridiculously hard!
You have to do the readings or you WILL fail. Pop quizzes can sink you like a brick. Tough exams, doesn't always finish his thoughts during class. Funny guy though, I enjoyed his class though it was tough.
His test questions can be confusing and worded weird, but he will look back over them and give credit for them if they really are worded wrong. Getting a B is not that hard if you go to class and don't fail the pop quizzes. He gives a study guide that is pretty helpful. Its not impossible, but it is not easy. He at least makes class interesting

His lecture, assigned readings, and tests do not correspond with each other whatsoever. You must put forth maximum effort to succeed in this class. He requires you to understand the material, not just memorize the notes. Go to class, take notes, read the book and cross your fingers when the test comes around
i hate him as a teacher. his lectures made no sense and he cusses too much. he expects us to understand stuff that we have never heard of. his tests are extremely hard and confusing. i went to every class and took every note and still made a D. i DO NOT reccomend him.
This is the most incompetent person I have ever met in my life. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He couldn't teach a person how to tie their shoes. He rambles and digresses to the extent that he can't remember what he's lecturing about. Someone needs to tell him to find a new career. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS
This is the worst teacher I have ever had and I've had quite a few. He says he is willing to help but only confuses the class more. He is always late and told the class he was purposefully going to word his tests and quizes in an impossible manner. Do not take him! I went to every class, did all readings and even went to office hours and got a D.
Do not, i repeat, DO NOT take this class. He is the teacher that wants you to fail. Tests were absolutely ridiculously hard. 56 on the first, 60 on the second, 48 on the third, and 60 on the fourth. I'm baffled that i passed with a D. I GUARANTEE you that this class will ruin your semester. if he's your only choice, WAIT A SEMESTER!
I really enjoyed this class! I love how he teaches and went to every class. He makes up his test mostly from his lectures, so you have to go to class. His tests were VERY (to me) but the material and the way he taught was entertaining and interesting.
TERRIBLE teacher DO NOT TAKE HIM!! extremely hard tests made to trick you up, he is not helpful at all and it is the most boring thing I have ever been a part of
Very Hard Test, but his class isnt impossible. He does scale his test and does a study session before every test. He will give pop up quizzes which you will have to have read to do good on. Seems hard at first then gets easier, He's a good guy, funny. Lecture was interesting. Study for his test!!
Professor Hewitt cares very little about the welfare of his students. He rolled in late often and the EXTENSIVE reading for each class was not always covered. He was discouraging, made me feel stupid when I was trying to discuss the concepts in order to understand, and his tests were worded in a confusing way. Does not encourage success.
Hewitt is the worst prof I have had at Auburn. He does not care about his students at all-- ask for help and he denies you. His tests are VERY tricky and he often messes up questions but won't give credit. Do not take him if you have other options!
Oh Howard, where do I begin. Worst teacher I've had at AU. Read the reviews and thought "he can't possibly be that bad." Boy was I wrong. The tests are worded in such a weird way, it's pure luck if you make a good grade on any of them. Scales them kind of but not enough to help much. I think he enjoys making his students suffer through it.
Acts like he cares if you understand info, but will make you feel ignorant if you ask questions. There were test questions about information that had never been discussed in class with a very difficult test format. This class provided me with nothing but contempt for philosophy. Boring subject matter made truly miserable by an awful instructor.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! There are some ethics professors who take their class seriously and make it uber hard, and then there are those who know that the material is somewhat difficult so they just make the class easy. Howard Hewitt is the first of the two. He is incredibly hard to understand and makes ethics seem more like organic chemistry!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!! Worst. Professor. Ever. He's condescending if you ask a question, but makes no sense when explaining things. His tests are impossible. He expects you to memorize everything he's ever said, which is incomprehensible in the first place, and if you don't spit it out exactly right he fails you. WORST CLASS EVER
Guys... HE GIVES YOU THE TEST QUESTIONS A WEEK IN ADVANCE! If you just put forth some effort and go to class it isn't that hard. Class was very interesting, and Hewitt knows his stuff. But this is college guys. Most of my class never showed up and expected to make A's. Bring your laptop and type as much as you can - not just the stuff on the board!
Howard is terrible. He couldn't care less how you do in the class. He is completely unhelpful, and makes you feel like an idiot if you ask a question even though he never makes sense. Tests are impossible. The average (with scaling) on test 2 was a 17/100.
I had Howard my first semester at auburn, probably the hardest professor ill have the whole time im here. He was horrible, absolutely horrible. He has fill in the blank pop quizzes on the readings that are rediculous! And the tests are fill in the blank plus 3 essays. DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!!!! seriosuly...
He's not that great of a teacher, he's hard to understand and his test are brutal. I highly don't recommend this teacher. avoit the class at all costs period.
Hard. Take good notes and go to class, read the pages he says to read because he pop quizzes on them. The tests are difficult, but doable and he curves sometimes. I went and talked to him during office hours quite a bit and I think that's what brought me from a C to a B. I HIGHLY recommend taking someone else.
Very tough class! His test are tough and he isn't the most helpful professor. I wouldn't recommend this class.
DO NOT TAKE. Took his class expecting abortion to come up but it is the entire semester focus. 2 tests throughout the semester and the rest is based on pop quizzes that are 3 questions and hard cause he gives you 7 minutes. Got an account on this website just to warn y'all, content is RIDICULOUSLY HARD, no reason to learn this stuff
HARDEST CLASS I'VE EVER HAD AT AUBURN. If that isn't saying something then I don't know what will. I would recommend to stay away at all costs...
You absolutely must do the readings to have a chance at a good grade and coming to class is a must. What he writes down is super important, so pay attention. This class isn't as bad as some of the other reviews make it seem. Do the readings, come to class, and study the essay questions for the tests and you should be ok.
Would not recommend this class. We talkedread about abortion the entire semester. We have pop reading quizzes, which aren't too bad if you do the reading. He grades the essay extremely hard on the midtermfinal (70 points of the exam is your essay). Don't take him if you have the chance to get in another class!
He's a really nice guy and he teaches the material as well as anyone can. Its a really hard concept to teach and its kind of a boring subject. He gives quizzes almost every single day and they count for 50% of our entire grade. Attendance isn't mandatory, but never skip if you want to pass
This class was the HARDEST class that I have EVER TAKEN! MANY pop quizzes. A LOT of reading. It is impossible to miss any day of class because you WILL fall way behind class. However I did enjoy the class. The discussions that we had in class were enjoyable and very interesting. If you show enthusiasm during the lecture the class will go by easier.
Great class. If you are interested in really learning to logically attack and think about an issue, then take this class. If you invest in the class you will make an A no problem. Realize that Howard wants you to take the time to read the assignments (never more than 10 or so pages) and think critically about the material. Excellent professor.
Hewitt really likes his reading quizzes- it's like 50% of your grade or something. If you are good at close reading, and retaining stuff, it'll be okay. I really had to study for this class, but you don't really talk about your opinions, but analyze other people's opinions on abortion. I would have liked a more comprehensive ethics class.
I would not recommend Dr. Hewitt. He is really intelligent and is very qualified in this field but his class is almost designed to fail. Very hard pop quizzes given almost every day (50% of your grade) and he does not grade easy. One midterm (almost impossible) and the final. It was interesting but there is not many chances to succeed in here.
Please, for your sanity, do not take Howard's class. He teaches 1030 ENTIRELY on abortion. Unless that's a subject that really really interests you, drop it and find another section. His pop quizzes are 50% of your grade, and they can be really tough. For the midterm and final you will write for an entire class period to fit all the info in.
Literally the hardest class I've taken so far. He is unhelpful in class- dodging questions and complicating lectures. He writes on the board the whole time which is a waste of time. Give pop quizzes on the reading which are 50% of your grade and his tests are essay form. If you can take Health Ethics from ANY OTHER TEACHER do it.
Hardest thing I've ever taken. Reading quizzes every day on really complex readings. Class is ONLY about abortion. Tests are mainly essays but he gives you 6 topics that they could be & then you have to study all of them to only write 1. DON'T TAKE IT. If you skip class you will absolutely fail. You'll probably fail regardless. Don't take the class
This class is incredibly hard & boring. Attendance is essentially required b/c of the random quizzes that count as a 1/3 of your grade. You only have a mid-term & final which are graded on your ability to regurgitate his opinion word for word. Also, you only cover 1 topic all semester ... abortion. If I were to choose again I would NOT take him.
I've heard a lot of people complain about Dr. Hewitt, but if you show up to class, read all the material he assigns (which isn't a lot, like 10 pages of reading for each class), and take notes in class, you will do fine. I enjoyed this class a lot. Also, stay of your phone because if he catches you he will make you leave, and it's awkward.
Dr. Hewitt really knows his topic, but this makes his class extremely hard. He presents the material well. Write down everything on the board. If you are looking for an easy A you won't find it here. His tests are essay only and if you don't go to class you will not pass. Do your reading and go to class and you will be fine, if you don't. good luck
really really nice guy just way too serious about philosophy. harsh harsh grader. 50% of your grade is pop quizzes (w/ only 3 questions on each) and the other 50% is 2 tests in essay format. WRITE DOWN EVERY WORD if you want to pass and reading is NOT optional. drops 3 lowest quizzes, which may or may not help with him as your teacher. good luck.
If you take this class, you're gonna find yourself attempting to jump in front of a tiger transit bus every morning on your way there. He gives incredibly long lectures and every word he says needs to be written down. If you miss one class you'll need to get whatever notes from that class from a friend because it will show up in an essay question
Absolute worst teacher I've ever had. Gives hard pop quizzes every day even if you read and take notes they are extremely hard. I would never recommend taking this class with Hewitt. You will end up with a bad grade and end up working your butt off trying to bring it up. There is only one test and pop quizzes are 50% terrible teacher and class.
Dr. Hewitt expects a lot out of you. You will have reading every night and you better do it because he gives pop quizzes that are worth half of your overall grade. The readings can be long and confusing but suck it up and get it done. You must go to class if you want to pass, there is not other way around it. Test are in the blue book.
Not an easy professor or an easy class at all. The lectures are long, boring, and confusing. There are dozen of arguments he goes over and if you don't know them EXACTLY you won't do well. If you do bad on a quiz, he is willing to go over it with you during office hours and offers help sessions before tests. The class is overwhelming but doable.
This was a fantastic class if you are passionate about abortion(the class is basically and in-depth analysis of all of the arguments for and against abortion). It is challenging, but will really make you think and teach you a lot about arguments. It is not easy (quiz almost every class), so keep up with the reading. I highly recommend the class.
Hewitt expects a lot out of you, but he does make it possible to do well. I really enjoyed the material, and he does a good job explaining the book in layman's terms. I recommend the class, but be prepared to work for your grade.
Hewitt is the worst. Be prepared to only talk about Abortion and how it should be legal. There is reading (10-20 pages) every night, and they are difficult so just reading it won't help, you have to study it before class. Pop quizzes randomly on the reading. Grades are 50% pop quizzes, 20% essay midterm, and 30% essay final. Not an easy class.
Worst instructor ever! He doesn't explain the material well, tests 50% and Pop Quizzes 50%. I WOULD NOT ADVISE THIS CLASS TO ANYONE!! Also he does not put grades in on time, so you will know what you have by the end of the semester!
The class is 50% pop quizzes and 50% midterm/final exam. A lot of heavy reading that is difficult to retain. It is hard to make a good grade in this class. Overall, he is a good teacher who seems to care about his students, but it is still a hard class.
This shouldn't be a hard class but he makes it very difficult. You have readings every day and pop quizzes most everyday that are 50% of your grade and they are not easy quizzes. Tests are essay tests and very difficult, don't expect much help from him either. I would suggest finding another teacher asap.
Incredibly hard class but incredibly well taught. It's 100% a class where you have to put the effort in to get the grade you want. 50% of your grade is pop quizzes so you're going to fail the class if you don't show up. Hewitt is a really engaging professor and is definitely willing to work with you to help you understand the material.
Howie is a straight savage who doesn't care about your personal problems. You could be hit by a car and be in the hospital and he still won't allow you to make up a quiz. Decent teacher, good lectures, but be prepared to face a professor with no mercy.
This class was miserable. The readings and his lectures are long. I put in effort in the class (did readings, went to EVERY class, studied for tests) and ended up making a B because he drops your 3 lowest quiz grades. You have 3 tests (50%) and quizzes (50%) that make up your grade. I'd suggest avoiding him!!
Okay, he is a really nice guy and a great professor when it comes to teaching material and he is very willing to help outside of class. He does not take any excuses whatsoever though. He is an extremely tough grader, and the readings are extremely important or you will get absolutely lost. If you can switch, switch.
Great guy, terrible teacher. Clearly loves discussing abortion, not whether students pass. Wait a semester if you have to for the better profs. Your grades will thank you.
Quiz almost every class on reading material, but aren't very hard if you understand what you're reading. So up to 3 quizzes a week and only a midterm and final. Can't take notes on phones, laptops, iPads - have to be written on paper.
Professor Hewitt is a great guy, the material being discussed is not so great. The books were very over my head and take a lot of time to understand the concepts that are being brought up. His class is 50% quizzes and 50% Midterm & Finals. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THOSE QUIZZES. Theyre all based off the book and can save your grade.
Howard Hewitt is a very chill person. I thought he was nice, and did everything he could to explain material to the class. As a person, great! As a professor, way too hard! For a core class, this is too much. If you're a nursing major, do not take this class because you will get a B.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. Its a freshman specific course, yet it felt way beyond that. The book went way over my head, quizzes are worded confusing, and its overall really difficult. Readings every class and tons of quizzes. Try NOT to take this course.
First, he only gives two test, a midterm and a final. The test are several short answers questions and 1 long answer that is 70% of your test. He grades them SO harshly so no mercy. He scales but because everyone fails. You have reading before class. He quizzes you over the readings. The quizzes are 3 questions so its pass or fail. Do not take!
This class is easy for any other professor here but not Hewitt. His class is solely on the The Defense of Abortion. Before every class you will have a hard 3 question quiz so if you miss one thats a 66%. Quizzes are 50% of your grade, the other half is a midterm and a final where you write out 6 long essays and you are given one on the test.
This was the hardest class Ive ever taken. The class is only talking about abortion. Complicated af and he is not very nice. One time he literally said read harder when the class was confused (????) dont ever take his class. Plus the midterm & final are one long essay question chosen from a random set of 6 (which you need to know them all)
This was the worst mistake. He is the hardest grader and most unforgiving professor. Will refuse to email students back when students have questions. Quizzes are hard and told students to "drop" class or "read better". Midterm grades were put in two weeks before finals. Midterm and final hardest tests ever taken.
If you don't study you won't pass, but the answers for exam questions are all straight from the notes, hardest part is just memorizing the answers. Class is always just him lecturing on the reading that was for homework. He explains the material in a way that's easier to understand than the book. Chill guy unless you use a laptop or phone in class
The rest of my classes this semester were junior level and this freshman level class was my worst grade. When I went to him about my grade he told me a C is a good grade in this class. He said he would do nightly quizzes but only did them once a week and theyre 2 or 3 questions so if you miss one you fail the quiz which is 50% of your finalgrade
The worst experience I've had at Auburn was taking this class. Our class average on every test was a low D if that tells you anything. He's arrogant and condescending. This is the only review I've posted about a professor and it's just to warn you not to take him. If you want a decent grade on a course that should be easy TAKE SOMEONE ELSE!!
This was the first ever class I have gotten a C in and most of the people I talked to in class had a C as well. All the quizzes he gives are 3 questions and worded really weird. I went into his office hours many times, and each time he told me to just "do better" as if that would help. Half the grades are tests and half are the quizzes. No final.
He makes many announcements for the class and so many of them come across as very belittling. He has said "first off, some of you cannot compose coherent English sentences." He is very entitled and even if you have a good understanding of the material in the class you have to go above and beyond to do well. Don't take. Not worth the negativity.
He seemed as if he had no idea on the subject material and was just reading straight from the text book. Took weeks upon weeks to grade discussion posts that are a pass or fail grade. There was also two quizzes a week that were three questions each only giving eight minutes to finish each of them. Very poor instructor and almost no communication.
Do not take this class guys. Worst class ever!
Two assignments per week: one due on Wednesday, one on Friday. The two assignments could be quizzes or discussion posts. You must take notes on lectures cause this guy's tests are strictly things in his lectures and nothing else on the internet
Very stoic and boring when lecturing. If you dont show up you have to get notes from someone else. Not helpful outside of class. Only 3 question quizzes online so if you get one wrong you fail. The information is incredibly difficult but the homework isnt too bad.
This is definitely a course you have to work for to get the grade you desire. The lectures are vital to understanding the concepts he teaches throughout the semester, but it is not very difficult to understand. He may grade harsher than usual but his exams are simple in knowing what is being asked. Not a bad professor at all, just show up to class.
Absolutely horrible. He has to scale midterms 25 points to have a class average of 60%. He gives 'in class assignments' that are worth 3 points a piece, so if you miss one you basically fail. REALLY tough grader. Class not mandatory, but highly reccomended.
Don't take this class if you're looking for an A. He had to curve up our final so many points because the class average was so low. I wrote everything we discussed in class on the exam and still lost an obscene amount of points for no reason. Also, assignments are worth 3 points, so if you miss one, you're failing. All for a PHIL class...
Hewitt gives weekly readings and quizzes. The quizzes are only 3 questions so if you miss one you get a D for the gradebook. He grades his tests extremely hard, wanting word-for-word quotes from the readings and won't give credit if you don't say it exactly right. Two tests, only 10 MC on each, the rest are SA and essay questions. Memorize and read
I am a pre med student and a pretty good student. I have yet to get a C at Auburn in my major but this year, my fourth semester, I took his class. He grades SO unfairly. Is not a good teacher and his exams are insane. He likes to flex that no one every gets a 100 on his exams too. The hardest grader I have ever had literally. Finished w a 79.1%
Many complain about this class, but by taking notes on lectures and trying to understand the readings/lectures, you will do fine. He dropped a lot of quiz grades, which helped my overall grade. Exams are lecture-heavy and short answers. He scaled our exams pretty heavily, which helped. If you do your assignments, you will be fine
I never have a hard time passing any of my classes, this class was taken for credit and was by far the most difficult class I had to take Exam quizzes are not graded fairly ive tried to reach out to this professor to ask for help on how to do better w no help the course is interesting but the class is extremely difficult other peers had trouble to.
He made this class very difficult for an intro class. He is very unhelpful when his students ask for help. It felt more like a philosophy class than an ethics class. His assignments are worded so poorly that it is difficult to understand. He is very unprofessional when addressing his students. Definitely not an easy A.
Incredibly difficult, if you are going to take him make sure it is not online. Lectures are hard to pay attention to, and a big portion of the grades are the tests. 60% to be exact I went from a decent grade to barely passing. Needless to say try to get another prof. Good guy Im sure class is just really rough.
I took his online ethics in the health sciences class, and after reading the previous reviews, I was nervous. I was surprised to find out that it is by far my easiest class. It is a little bit more intensive than I believe necessary, but his homework is just discussion posts, and his quizzes are 3 questions.
I took this course online and you usually had two assignments a week, one reading quiz and one discussion post. Both were very easy and he takes off your lowest 5 quiz grades. Gives only a midterm and final but is open note. Overall good class and I learned alot.
I had him online and it was not good. He does not give you any feedback and grades the exams so hard. He does not teach very well or emphasize how you should phrase your arguments in the slightest.
Seems like a nice guy but is a terrible teacher. Only a midterm and final as big grades and quizzes that are insanely difficult on ancient readings. Don't know how he still has a job. Lectures on information that is useless to everyday life. Don't see how anyone could get a B in this class.
He states that he strives for education, but lacks to acknowledge his poor teaching methods. He likes to give out two quizzes a week based on difficult readings such as Plato's Republic. These quizzes are three questions and have a time restriction of under 8 minutes. Missed two questions? too bad that's an F (33) Missed only 1? that's a D (66)
Would not recommend taking his classes. I am currently in his online business ethics and am struggling. His quizzes are 2-3 questions so if you miss one you get a 66. Lectures are boring but not too long. Easy discussion posts once every few weeks. The main issue is the quizzes. There is also a lot of contradictions between his lectures and quizzes
I am currently in his online Business Ethics class and I'm struggling more than any of my others. I am a straight A student through my first year at Auburn. I have a 64 rn. He is a super friendly guy, but not a great teacher. You are graded on 3 question quizzes that are based on difficult to comprehend readings. Ridiculously hard class.
Steer. Clear. He gives out two 3 question quizzes a week. If you miss 1, you are at a D. 2? You have an F. Normally, this would not be a problem. However, his lectures are useless (incoherent) as they are opened AFTER the quiz. The readings are near impossible to understand as well. Take a professor that actually cares about their students, not him
Worst professor on campus. I am an A/B student, but this was the worst grade I've received in college. Only 2 tests, midterm and final, and the quizzes were only 3 questions each. Offered no sort of bonus/ extra credit and had office hours 1 day a week for an hour. Way too difficult for an entry-level ethics class. Do not take him for any class.
He only has quizzes, a midterm, and a final. He grades incredibly difficult. Lectures are hard to follow and do not make much sense. It's more philosophy than ethics.
I did not enjoy this class. The entire class is graded on 3 question quizzes and then the midterm and final. He's a very picky grader that does not really specify what he is looking for and the course itself is disorganized. There are much better ways to get this credit.
Even though the professor is very knowledgeable about what he is teaching, his grading is way too hard for an introduction class.
Howard Hewitt if u reading this run me my ones why you gotta make this so difficult and for what I wish you knew how stress inducing this class is like please realize it is never that deep and make better quizzes because you are doing us all so wrong so so so wrong thanks
I cannot urge someone more not to take this class. Proff Hewitt is the worst teacher I have ever had. Don't ignore the RMP ratings! He seems to care less about his students and the grades that they get. His lectures are all over the place and are hard to following and his horrible handwriting makes it even worse.
His lectures are decent but his handwriting is like reading hieroglyphics its so bad. We take 3 question quizzes in 8 minutes posted with 24 hour notice on textbook readings almost every class. THERES ONLY 2 EXAMS!!!! The midterm/final weigh most of grade but are nothing like what is done in class. I wouldn't take him again but I enjoy the content
For an introductory philosophy class, he makes this class way harder than it needs to be. He has 2-3 quizzes every week with only 3 questions and if you do not read YOU WILL FAIL THEM. He has only two tests worth 70% of your grade and grades these tests extremely hard. Attendance is not mandatory but if you don't go you'll fail. Just don't do it.
This class consistently made me feel like I was dumb and was just simply way too much work.
absolutely awful. please if you do anything do not take him if you dont have to. seems like he is chill kinda but that doesnt matter when u get 3 question quizzes that he makes so hard for no reason. i think ive thrown my ipad 10+ times after each quiz when i submit it u dont want this type of stress for an intro to ethics class cant wait to leave
Dr. Hewitt gave interesting lectures but good luck reading his handwriting. You will only have a midterm and a final weighted 40 and 60%. He asked what a valid argument was. I gave a good explanation and got 0 points because " it was not word for word what he was looking for." He is an impossible grader. Do yourself a favor and stay away.
Dr. Hewitt is an awesome guy and an awesome teacher. His bad reviews are from students who don't like it when teachers actually make you work for your grade. His lectures are so interesting and he really will do anything he can to clarify material both in and out of class. There is a reading quiz before each class but they are easy if you read.
He solely bases your grade on a multitude of 3-question quizzes, which you only have 8 minutes for, and they are very wordy, making it difficult to complete as you aren't given much time. I do the readings and sometimes don't have time to read all the questions and apply knowledge from the reading before I'm worried about being able to finish.
This class has made me feel as though I am the dumbest student known to man. The quizzes, which are only 3 questions, are based on lectures and readings. It seems simple enough until you directly pull your answer from the text or what he says in the lectures and still fail the quiz. His wording makes it impossible to fully understand anything.
Do not take this class online!! Your grade is based on 3 question quizzes that are based off of comprehension. If you get a 2/3 on quizzes it will drop your grade multiple points. Whenever I emailed him about what I can do to improve in the class I was told to "read harder" Save yourself and don't take this class.
He is an awful teacher. He makes the quizzes and exams impossible and is nothing but rude when you email him. Everyone is failing the quizzes and he does not care. He says the only way to make a good grade is to read better and get good grades on his quizzes. Never take this class.
Professor Hewitt structures his grading around weekly quizzes with only 3 questions. If you even miss one question your grades begin to suffer. Tests and quizzes are worded in a way that is confusing to read, even when putting in the effort to read assigned materials. He is hard to communicate with and often doesn't know how to answer questions.
This teacher is absolutely terrible. DO NOT TAKE HIM. Gave his students a 14 question final just because they asked for help with his quizzes. He does not deserve to be a professor at Auburn University.
Truly the worst professor I have ever taken at Auburn. He answers emails in a rude manner and your entire grade is based off of 3 questions quizzes with a midterm and final. I am not sure if he is different if you take him in person but don't bother to enroll in the online course if you actually want a good grade. Does not care about his students!
Goes all over the place during lectures and is never clear about the material
Do not take if you think you can get an easy A. He is rude on emails when we asked for help on the 3 question quizzes. Grade is based off those, discussions that do not help, midterm, and final. The exams are ridiculously hard and even if you can prove his answer wrong, he is still somehow right. Be ready to dissect every word of his lectures.
I would not recommend this professor at all. He bases your grade off of 3 question quizzes and a midterm/final that seems worded to confuse you, even if you have studied/read. He is not nice or helpful when you reach out for help and does not care about his student's grades. Do not put yourself through this class with him.
Not an easy A, but if you are willing to put in the work, Hewitt is a great prof and very interesting. 3 question quizzes over readings before each lecture but they are pretty straightforward if you actually read. Attendance not mandatory but he lectures on the whiteboard so if you don't come you will miss it. Tests are easy IF YOU GO TO CLASS!!
Hewitts online class is insanely difficult for no reason. His tests somewhat relate to the lecture material but barely. He is rude in emails and has a single one hour office hour window once a week which I was never able to attend due to class. He will yell at you and is very unhelpful. There are tons of lectures with readings that dont help at all
I have HATED this class. In no world should this class be this hard. He had a test where the average was a 60. A 60, should say something about how horrible he is. Take this class somewhere else. Save yourself. I promise it is worth it.
This class is so hard. Readings before class are not bad but during class he talks fast and just writes on the board (no powerpoint or notes on canvas). THE TESTS ARE AWFUL. 90% written and he will take off points for any and every little detail you miss. He makes the concepts so so confusing. Take elsewhere or with a different professor at Auburn.
Do not take unless you are ready to read the book, listen in class, and take good notes. The tests were hard, they were mostly written and the study guide he would give wouldn't be helpful at all. He grades tough. The averages would be low. I did not like the class.
There was no reason this class should be that difficult. I did literally everything I possibly could to get an A in the class, but I barely pulled out a B. He also pushes a lot of his own beliefs onto his students, and I just found that strange.
This course was was recommended by my advisor for an "easy elective". I made the mistake of not reading the RMP. this class was harder to study for any of my courses this semester for an intro class. If you do not go to class you will be very lost. He is all of the place with notes and and exams are written do not take this class. seriously.
This is an odd class. Professor Hewitt is a funny guy and pretty cool. Going to class is optional. You have reading quizzes before every class that have unlimited attempts, but they weigh nothing. He grades the exams ridiculously, even to where a 75 is really good. However, he curves the class average to an 80, so just do better than the class.
Dr. Hewitt was a nice person, but not a great reacher. I enjoyed the content, but tests were graded ridiculously hard and lectures were tough to understand. Everyone I know that took this class with a different professor made an A. Don't take Dr. Hewitt for the sake of your GPA.
He gives pop quizzes. Attendance is mandatory. My class is full of Organic Chemistry students that are Pre-Med and the exam average was usually 70s. There has to be an easier teacher. If you really want to learn a lot about abortion and medical ethics take him. If you are a Pre-Med major and have to take it please don't.
Mr. Hewitt seems like a nice guy, but his class is very difficult. I am a pre-dental freshman taking Biology and Chemistry, and this was my hardest class. You will not pass class if you skip too often, attendance is a big part of your grade.
I know other people hated this class, but if you set aside one or two days to study the material, then you will get an A. There are pop quizzes nearly every week and they typically fall on Fridays. The only good part about those days is you may get to leave early. Your participation is based on if your name is randomly called on to read a paragraph
