cOOL, A LITTLE BORING, BUT COOL, GOOD GRADER
"Howie" as he is more commonly called is the most laid back and friendliest prof in the science department. Ask him about his poetry to get him off the subject for a cool class discussion.
The course is fairly easy, but Horowitz is rather boring
this feels like a history class, the books he gives are rather long and boring, but a nice guy and an easy grader
this man is very passionate about his work
Howie rocks!
Little bit boring, but a very nice guy who is an easy grader
great guy, only reading hw, and 2 papers, easy grader, likes to go off topic if someone asks him questions. you have a midterm and final if you read you'll do fine or do really good on the papers and you'll pass. very laid back class. easy
Charming man, always enthusiastic to talk for two hours about...salmon. But he's so cool! I've had him for two classes-and check out the trips he leads out West in the summer and winter.
Dr. Horowitz is by far the best teacher at Ramapo. I have gone out west with him on his summer and winter trip and he is truely a kind, generous, and outstanding professor. His class is very intersting and you really learn alot about geography and the env
Dr. Horowitz is great! He is always available for help and is truely a kind person. His class was very interesting and he is a very intelligent professor. If you want to learn about geography and the environment, he is the one to take. Highly Recommended!
Howie absolutely loves what he does, knows a lot, and is a nice man. But I'm posting this as a warning to Comm students looking to take him for a Gen Ed -- he doesn't give ANY sort of review for tests and if you aren't science-oriented it's a pain.
This class was more of a geology class. He lectures for the entire time. A very boring class and he seems to be off in his own little world. No idea. I still cant decide if I would reccoment this guy. I'm sure there are better teachers.
Howard Horowitz is a treasure to be cherished. He is a real human being, understands human beings, and that is a rarity today where everything is streamlined and hurried up. Take his class, if only to meet him for 6 months. HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION
There are no words to describe Howie. He makes this world a better place and I hope that I have the opportunity to be half the environmentalist he is. We love you Howie...My vote for teacher of the century!
Dr. Horowitz is the best! Highly recommended
in all honesty he is a good teacher but i dont think i got the grade i deseved.. i know i did alot better then a few other people who never went to class and got like 25's on the tests and still got c;s
wonderful man and a great teacher!! us environmental studies majors are very lucky! his field trips can be...interesting :) easy, laid back class.
Great man, goes out of the way to help you out, filled with loads of information.
Howie is the best. I had to fight to get into the class and it was well worth it. I learned more than I had ever hoped for. I recommend this class to anyone. He is as helpful as professors can get. The nicest man I've ever met. Take the class.
It's tough to rate him because while he's a great guy and obviously loves teaching he was cursed with the most hypnotic, sleep-inducing voice, HOWEVER, if you stay up front and pay attn., it's an interesting, more difficult than you would think, class.
Howie is the best! His class is awesome and he is such a nice person!!! Go on his American West Study Abroad Trips, they are well worth it. I have gone on 3 of his trips, taken 4 of his classes, and he is one of the nicest professors I have ever met. A+++
Go on his summer study abroad its great! He is my favorite professor on this campus! Keep up the good work Howie, you are one of a kind!!!!!! A+++++
Slightly scattered brained, but has a heart of gold. Pay attention and take good notes and you'll do fine.
NICEST MAN EVER, unfortunatly, deathly boring.. speaks in a mono-tone voice that puts you to sleep; yet so long as you take good notes you will do very well
Nice man (slightly boring) - insanely easy grader. I guessed on the test and handed in the two worst papers of my life and got an A in the class. Hilarious habit of taking exactly one step to the left of the podium every 60 seconds and returning right back to where he was. Take a tally!

Prof. Horowitz is a VERY kind and generous man. He will do anything to help a student better understand material that is unclear. He obviously has a love for his material and knows it VERY well. If you do the reading and pay attention in class you should have no problem getting at least a B+
Outstanding! He has a love of the material and he is an amazing person to get to know. Go on his American West trips, they are amazing. What a great man, by far the best teacher at Ramapo, hands down.
Yay for Howie! Nicest prof ever, very willing to help if you need it. He has very interesting stories as well. Go on his study abroad trips! I went this summer and had the time of my life! How often do you get to go cliff diving at Crater Lake?
This man knows his stuff and will share it with you until you burst. Nice guy but has a voice that puts you to sleep. Overall, good course, studying is required and one large report is not that hard.
Howie is probably the best teacher at Ramapo College. Go on his study abroad trip, it is worth it.
Nice guy, but painfully boring class for 3 1/2 hours! Study your notes and the online chapter summaries and you'll do well. The observation report wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Takes geography from almost a geology standpoint (don't worry, it's not hard).
Good G/E-SCI class - can drag on at points, but overall really knows his stuff and is always willing to help. 3 or 4 exams and 1 large report at the end which wasnt as bad as I thought... Really is a great professor.
Horowitz is an insanely boring man. He is a sweet guy, but has the most sleep-inducing voice I've ever heard, I slept in everyone of his classes. In saying that, I still got a B. He grades extremely easily. Course is not too demanding, except for one long report. Once you dont procrastinate, its ez
Such a sweet guy, but avoid taking him for a summer session. He throws huge assignments at you and makes you think the final to be impossible, but will then allowyou to use a review sheeet. This was too much work for a 5 week period, but he'd probably be tolerable during a regular semester.
Dr. Horowitz's summer and winter trips are awesome, I have gone on both. He is very informative and we go to a vast array of National Parks and many other areas. Go on his trips, I promise that you will love them. Dr. Horowitz rules!!!
He is not good or fun, just extremely boring. If you're a Comm major and get stuck taking him like I did I feel sorry for you.Lots of notes, lots of repeating and you have no idea what's important. Tests based on notes, no review sheets.
Dr. Mono-tone. Fantastic guy. Very informative class, worthwhile. Learned a ton about env. issues from the ice age to the present. Real interesting stuff Howie has to offer. Great guy, very smart, and very leniant. Talk to him about the env. or water treatment (I did, he loved me), got an A, but wrote a lot of notes and studied a lot.
Such an adorable, nice, understanding person. He is VERY dedicated to his work and is always there for his students. He is an easy grader who mostly cares about the wellfare of his students and the environment. Hes great!
Drink a lot of coffee before this class! Very monotone. Take notes cause his tests are on them AND the books. READ the books cover to cover! My mistake for not reading them and I missed out on two papers that were serious grades.
Extremely lazy and unfit to teach. gave us one grade back the entire semester and had papers for over a month with no return. extremely boring and rambles constantly. if you like not knowing how you are doing in a class, take this terrible professor.
Lectures get very boring. VERY nice man. Honestly cares about what he teaches, and his students. Actually knows what he is talking about, and is willing to help when you ask for it. Lots of notes, but not too much work.
Nice guy but a little boring...worth taking but not for a one day a week class. Make sure to take him in two sessions.
having graduated now i look back and cannot find one other professor worse then him. not one. it's evident that he knows the material, but he simply doesn't posses any public speaking ability what so ever. what ever you do DO NOT take him as a professor you will regret it if you do.
Rather monotone person but detail oriented. The highlight of the class when I took it in 1993 was that there was an earthquake that shook the H wing tower the class was in!
What a great guy - really cares about what he teaches and wants you to succeed. Just make sure you don't strike a conversation with him if he is on on his way to class - or else he will show up to the class 20 min late! Don't listen to these other slackers who never showed up to the class, and then wondered why they failed.
Prof Horowitz is awesome, take this guy if you can. Go to class and write a short paper and you will get an A.
Really cares about the topic and his students...he wants you to do well and tries his best to help. I take him whenever I get the chance, and would tell you do to the same.
Very nice and very boring. Not hard grader but not easy either. 2 tests + 1 take home test/paper. Field research project for experiental component.
Great teacher, he really knows what he's talking about. He is funny, as he is unsure if we are awake a lot of the time. But overall great professor!
Prof. Horowitz is a great guy. Sure he can be boring (very boring) but he knows and loves what he does. Cares about his students and goes out of his way to help you. The only catch is you have to show up. Alot of kids blow his class and wonder why they fail, he remembers who shows up...
This man is an angel. I would not have made it through college without fulfilling my science reqs. And I would not have made it through my science reqs without Howie Horowitz. I think his motto is No one gets left behind unless they want to be. Kind, compassionate, empathetic, knowledgeable and passionate to a fault about his subject and students.
take this professor. he is great. easy B, but be prepared to take notes in his class and try not to fall asleep. (bring a laptop and movies*)
The nicest guy ever. He will do whatever it takes to help you. Such an easy class. A little boring but an easy A
howie is super nice and really wants you to do well, but the class is 3 hours of pure lecture, and the tests aren't THAT easy. big field project for a 100-level class, but if you just take good notes and try to pay attention, he's really not that bad.
great
I <3 Howie
What a sweet man, and so unbelievably knowledgeable. Definitely take this course if you are a nursing major seeking to fulfill an SCP. The exams are not difficult as long as you pay attention in class and take notes. He is also willing to help and gives you as much time as you need on the exams even if the class time has expired. GREAT CLASS :)
Well he doesn't allow the students to have study sheet with them anymore, which means you have to study harder!! He's really nice though and he's willing to help you if you ask him. READ!!! dat's a must.
Forest Resources. He's a supper nice guy, but the class is very boring. I wouldn't recommend taking him for a 3 hour class. Pretty easy grader, but you have to do the readings. If you do take his class, I know he's boring, but please don't talk over his lectures. He'll never call you on it, but it's annoying and disrespectful.
Horrible class & professor, lectures were beyond boring & is not an easy grader at all. Never hands back any assignments in a timely manner. Gives horrible grades and does not explain why. Would not reccomend at all. Save yourself and your GPA and take someone else.
Prof. Howie has a very pleasant demeanor, class environment. His class lectures are very informative. Pay attention b/c a lot of them are on his midterms and final. Workload consists of 1 topics paper(1-3 pgs), 2 midterms (1 in Feb, 1 in April) , a final, and an observational report (due on day of final, have all semester to work on) Lots of work..
Very easy to fail this class if you just show up and dont care. You must take notes to pass. Make sure to buy the book because it helps with the tests and the project. This man is really nice and has no ego.
Howie is awesome! Yes, he talks the whole class and it can be "boring" but just listen and it's really interesting stuff, he knows what he's talking about. You NEED to take notes. Tests are based of his lectures. You also need to read the text for what he didn't cover in class. Tests can be difficult, you need to know your stuff. Big sem project.
He is very clear as to what you need to do for an A. He knows his stuff. Every class is him lecturing, and it's interesting to me, but can seem boring and monotonous to some. Very nice guy, old tree-planting hippie.
Howard Horowitz is a very sweet older man who is extremely passionate about what he teaches. He doesn't use powerpoint and rarely uses images so his lectures can be extremely boring. His tests are hard, especially if you don't take notes. Not a bad class but definitely not great.
PhysGeography. Classes are not mandatory, but the two midterms and final are based almost entirely on the lectures so taking notes is very helpful. One big observation project that spans the semester and is 35% of the grade. Not a difficult class, and while he can be boring (very monotone) the information is interesting.
This guy's style is very down-to-earth, literally. His background includes the first worker-owned tree planting company and so much of his lectures come from experience that you have to listen. I took 3 classes and each was really interesting and fun. He lives and loves environmental subjects, and it ends up being contagious.
He's a nice guy. Looks like Einstein, talks a bit like he's narrating an old school documentary. Lectures with just his voice so if you're a visual learner or easily bored, probably best to avoid. Tests can be tricky but otherwise, one book review and one field study project... easy to pass as long as you take good notes.
He's not the most interesting teacher, and most don't pay attention, but he's the sweetest man in the world. He really wants you to put effort into the observation report. There are 3 tests, allows 'cheat sheets'. I got an A-, without putting my effort in. Never lets you out early, so don't get your hopes up. Brings you to conferences sometimes.
VERY EASY CLASS! There are three exams one of which is a final. He allows "cheat sheets" but you MUST ASK before the exam. The class may get boring and the concepts are so easy it's like 5th grade stuff. youre allowed to bring your laptop.
Howie might be the nicest professor in the world. Soft-spoken and passionate about environmental topics, classes are 95% spoken so if you need visual aids this is probably not the best class for you. Not a difficult class, we were allowed a "cheat sheet" for the midterm/exam and he assigned one paper. I would definitely recommend him!
Took him for forest resources. Awesome guy and a great teacher! His extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for the topic of forestry makes the class more meaningful than a lot of other college classes. There are field trips that are fun and the work load is light. Two tests (one take home in essay form) and one paper. Take him, you won't regret it!!
he is not a great public speaker, but he is a great professor. no powerpoint, so you have to really listen to what he is saying. Always on time to class and always keeps us until aobut 5 minutes before class ends.
Professor Horowitz's Water Resources class is very easy. He requires a lot of reading, that can be skipped if you have some common sense. Test questions can be challenging, but is a VERY easy grader. PROFESSOR IS INCREDIBLY BORING! Don't take if you value your time more than an easy A.
Talks for the full class time. Syllabus is a list of topics that he may or may not get to. No review for the exams hence you absolutely have no idea where to start studying and exams total 60% of final grade! FYI: no cheat sheets allowed. Yeah he is a sweet man but if youre taking this class only for a science req...Good luck is all I can say!
Nice man, but boring class. Talks and talks and talks and talks. Does not keep you interested whatsoever, no visuals, nothing. Get a diff professor.....good luck!
He needs to vary his teaching method. It's just straight lecture. It can be monotonous. And you may keep checking the clock. The information can be very interesting. A couple of field trips.
His lectures were soooo boring and monotonous. But he's a nice guy. Try try try to pay attention---I took tons of notes--that helped me stay focused.
He is a nice guy and means well, but for a 101 class he takes it too seriously. He doesnt teach he rambles and his tests are un fair. He is the only one that offers this class as well. If you could avoid him i would.
Howie is fantastic. Hes a sage, a man with as deep a well of information as I've ever encountered. True he sticks to his lecture stance, but it's like fireside chats with your favorite grandpa. Definitely one of the older science rockstars at Ramapo. His class is a gift, not to be missed.
Took it as a gen ed. Not the most exciting class, but Howie is so kind, smart and helpful! Didn't need the textbook; just pay attention in class and KNOW YOUR VOCABULARY WORDS! 3 tests, one project, one short paper. I'm an English major, but I actually really loved this class! Excellent professor!
Howie is great, real great to kick it with, and great to talk to one on one because he knows and has seen so much. But the lecture is dry and long. very difficult to pay attention to, and the test questions are based upon things that he may have mentioned in passing, so paying attention and taking notes is crucial.
For most, this teaching style will be quite challenging and outdated. Little work is required; however, it seems that many students struggle to pay attention as lectures tend to run on with little (if any) variation and most are disappointed with the class as a result. If being taken as a GenEd, other more engaging courses are certainly available.
Howie is the bomb!! I'm currently taking my 4th class with him and he is the coolest! Everyone take him. He can be a bit boring and just sits and lectures for the entire period, but he knows what he's talking about! He is so interesting. Take him! He doesn't give much work, but some. He really cares about students and the subject matter.
Class is long boring lectures and he doesn't speak above a whisper. You'll probably fall asleep a lot. He really cares about what he's teaching and has experience but the material is boring. You have to read the textbook. The projects are extensive, unclear and require you to observe on your own.
Environmental History 3 exams midterm, final, and take home, CEC, and short writing assignment. pay attention and take notes he has a lot of experience in the subject and explains them can be a little boring but I did not think so....
Three exams and two projects; one a semester long observation report and the other a short current event paper. The exams are almost entirely free response so make sure you are prepared; 90% of questions from lecture. Prof. Horowitz is kind & conveys the material very effectively but it is essentially pure lecture so it can grow tedious at times.
3 exams, worth 80% of your grade , a project and paper worth the remaining 20 % of your grade. the exams are all free response and are based on his lectures, its essential to pay attention and write notes the whole time to do good, rarely use the book. way too much for a gen ed. if you are able to avoid do it, if you're not then get ready to work
Horowitz is the cutest man alive, I love hearing him talk cause he's so passionate and knowledgeable. Kept me interested even though you have to listen and take good notes. Not too many assignments or tests, tests are essay questions though so be prepared!
Water resources included in class mid term exam take home final exam group project final paper easy, clear and concise...
2 exams, a take home midterm based on a book and a local environmental paper (5 pages). He is extremely fair and humble, but you must take notes to pass the exams. The lectures are a stream of consciousness, but they're brilliant, especially if you enjoy the subject manner. Avg. students will be bored and will stare down at their cellphones.
I love Howie. I plan on taking all of the classes he teaches. He is so humble and quite literally lives to teach his students. He is so knowledgeable and caring. His tests are based on his lectures so diligent notes are important. There is a textbook but I never used it. His tests are hard but if you do poorly he lets you retake it when your ready.
Overall he was a good teacher. His exams were from the lecture no surprises on the test.
If you're the type of student who don't do well with an all lecture class then DON'T TAKE HIM. He is a good professor and unbelievably incredibility smart. For the full hour and a half he just talks and talks and the whole class zones out and just go on their computer for the whole class. I wouldn't recommend him.
Howie is soft spoken, so I'd sit close to him so you can hear everything. He tends to ramble on about stuff for a while and is pretty dry, and always lectures the entire class time. That being said, he is such a kind soul and an amazing person. Im also taking Forest Resources and Enviro. History with him. Take his classes, he is very knowledgable!
His class consists of only lectures, he talks for an hour and a half straight. Not only is this boring and hard to pay attention to but also does not provide opportunities for participation. He barely remembers his students names. Doesn't assign homework and the textbook is free online. He's a sweet man but not the best professor.
Really great guy and always happy to answer student questions during lectures. You actually need access to the textbook because things in the textbook that aren't discussed in class come up on tests. Don't save it all until the last minute either, it's a lot. Don't wait on the project either, you have to do it throughout the entire semester.
Horowitz is a very knowledgeable and respected professor. The whole class is lecture and you have to take your own notes to study. A few papers, take home midterm on a book, and final.
Took for Enviromental History. There is no textbooks, we had 1 book "Guns, Germs and Steel" to read, we had an exam (in the form of a paper) on just the book alone, but it was good. We got lots of shorter readings, assignments were mostly responses/short papers on readings/lecture materials. Easy to do online.
