Great teacher and even a better person.
He is a very good teacher...take him!
he is a really good teacher he knows what he is talking about and makes concepts easy to understand by breaking down the terms into examples
Take him, he is a great teacher!!
He is a pretty good teacher!
He is a pretty nice person. The tests aren't that hard.
Keen makes sense of Finacial terms. I've already noticed some of the examples and terms creeping into my everyday language.
Take him, he is good.
Great teacher
An easy A...a good teacher.
If you take him instead of Scott you are cheating you and your parents out of an expensive education
Please take him.... Because of him I fell in love with Finance. He gives u a lot of examples and really explains and answers students questions. He's a wonderful professor.
Don't be intimidated if you're confused in class. You'll probably still get a grade you're happy with.He really knows his stuff but isn't very good at explaining things to beginners. Just ask him the same question 10 times and he'll try again.Good teacher.
Easiest class in Temple. Curves the class average to a 78, and you get to bring in 1 page of paper (back and front, write all you want) to assist you with your test. Whoever thinks this class is hard spent no time preparing, my average was 110.
Keen is an awesome guy but he can't teach very well. (The 20 point curve will make up for it though) He knows his material and is willing to help out if you don't understand (but there's always a line at his office right before an exam).
Keen is an average professor but he doesnt cut to the point when you ask a question.. he wastes a lot of time dancing around the subject before answering. 100% of grade based off 3 multi-choice exams
He was an ok teacher. The curve did help a lot, but your grade is based on 3 tests. If you do not understand the material I would recommend going to his office hours because he will make sure you understand the material. Go to every class because if you miss one you will probably be lost.
Mixed reactions on this professor. Nice guy but not the best teacher in the world. Tests can me difficult and throws a weird curve so that the class avg is a 77 regardless the outcomes. 3 tests and thats it. no extra credit, attendance, nothing. Study hard.
He is great...great curves....easy A
If you're looking for an easy way out and you skip every other class, taake him. He is extremely boring. I honestly don't think it's a quality education because I haven't learned much in the class, and I'm getting a B. He's not really worth your money.
I would not recommend taking him for Investments, the way he runs the class doesnt make any sense. Homework is 25% of the grade but he doesnt teach you anything about it until after it is due. there is three exams and he always throws in tricky questions just to make the student trip up. No curve
The material for this class is not hard to learn. It is very basic stuff that if you go to class and read the book, you will do awesome. His tests are challenging but material is easy to learn. Just make sure to read the sections in the book which will be on exam. Reading that provided so much clarity for me. He does good reviews at end of chapter.
If you are a BUMM, dont take him cause you have to learn most on your own. He will not hold your and walk you through the course, he makes it clear how you are graded, very objective and fair, 3 tests and h.w. avg.
Great professor...I learned a lot and got an easy A. He lets u bring one sheet of paper to the exams, u can fill it up front and back with all the material and gives helpful reviews before the exam. Highly recommended.
This teacher is very nice, but I mostly learned on my own. Had 3 tests, his curve was 77 which helped a little. He doesnt count attendance so people hardly went. Test were tricky..I advise you to study hard!! His review sessions were helpful
Great prof. Wasn't too difficult will explain stuff continually until you fully understand. Test were curved and class was fairly enjoyable. I definitely would recommend taking.
This guay gets such great ratings because he is one of the best to take for Finance 101 but for 103 try and take Huffman. In 103 he gives you problems to look over and he says know these for the exam but then on exam time nothing but definitions show up and not many word problems why didn't he just say the exam has lots of defintions?
If you want an A, do not skip his class because you will find that you'll need a lot of formulas that aren't in the text. He has reviews days in which he'll answer all of the questions. He lets you use a cheat sheet, both sides during the exams.
The thing about not going to class is NOT true. I went to exactly 1 class the whole semester and got an A. He's that easy.
Clear in course teaching and helpfuf.
A great teacher.Makes the class easy
Excellent teaching with clear examples and illustrations. He is interactive with the class to a high degree. If you attend all of his classes, you will have a greater command of the material. I rate him A+++
Keen is really not good at all in fin 103. Very boring and not much help at all. Half of the things on the tests especally concepts he never wnat over in class. I think its hard to follow his style if you are not a finane major. But he lets you use a sheet of notes fotr test. but evern with that i was still hard. Aviod him in speakman 112 its hell
Grade is curved at 75% and your best test is counted twice, so he is fair with that. Boring class, but he's clear and teaches you what you need to understand basic Fianance and pass his class. I got A, didn't go to class half the time
Taking this class in the summer time makes it totally boring but really really easy! Takes his time to go through all examples. Homework Manager is the worst thing to work with, but its not really his fault. It just sucks that he has to test it on our class.
keen wasn't too bad, but he couldve made class a lot more interesting and easier to pay attention. he gives you time in class to work in groups which is helpful since the homework is so tricky. the exams test more concepts than the homework, so be sure to read the textbook too (which isnt a very easy thing to do either)
He's a good teacher. His tests are relatively difficult - concept based multiple choice rather than problems like a lot of other profs. I'd definetely recommend reading the book. His curve is pretty good and it's really not all that hard to do well.
Can someone plz rate him for Finance W350
(fin103). I took him again for Fin103 and was happy. He counts your best exam twice + he curves so that an ave = 77 in class. He explains everything very clearly & only what you need to know, nothing more. He will explain several times if needed. You can have a sheet of notes on exam. Final is much harder than the first 2 exams - be prepared! A+++
Hes an easy teacher, and as long as you do the HW problems and study for the test youll do good on the test. Plus he curves every test, so if youll get into a class with bunch of dumb people youll get atleast an B+
do his hw problems... teaches xcellent, if u attend classes, you will understand everything.... final xam contains every kind of sum possible from the topics... (not cumulative)
Very clear explanations, highest test grade is 50%, other two are 25%. Very good teacher.
not bad but not goo easy enough to pass and class was not manditory at all so take him if u like to study on ur own.. also i found if u just read the book i was fine!
I love his classes. Took him for Finance 101 & 103. He is a very nice guy and very clear about what his test.Test is mutiple choice, usually 25 question. Not easy though. Make sure you study your notes and practice enough. Very nice professor. Highly recommended!
Not only was it his first time teaching honors, but also his last. He's one of those professors who thinks he can take advantage of the "smarter" students by making the class ridiculously hard. We taught ourselves, end of story, and as a finance major I now have to move on to the next class not knowing anything. Horrible professor.
Best teacher. Really clear. Do the homework in the book, it's not collected, but it helps you a lot. The book of choice is very modern and easy to understand. You can't fail his class. If you do, it was because you failed as a student, not him as a teacher.
Easy class. Conveys the concepts effectively. If you make a half decent "helper page", you should have no problem doing well in the course.
He is an awesome teacher, not easy but extremely helpful. You definetely learn. Test are based on Homework problems. He is a nice guy.
I thought this class was going to be a lot easier. i did manage to come aout sith an A- =, His grading scheme is cool your highest test grade counts twice. The final is very hard. He is a good teacher and tells you what you need to know.
I wouldn't miss any classes b'c U can get lost fast. He will help U if U need it! If you do the homework you'll get an A. I did none and got a B b'c he let's U use a cheat sheet for the test and yes ur highest test grade does count twice!
crap~ I showed 3 time for 3 tests, and got a B+, never got calculations wrong, but definitions, always definitions killed the opportunity to get A. sad~~
personality was OK, but teaching skill really suck. got A and skipped bunch of classes, you could teach yourself without his boring lecture.
Lectures are incredibly boring, because he just teaches from rote memory. They're also completely useless, because most of what is on the test isn't in the lecture, and is hard to find in the text. Don't bother with him.
Don't take him. He is very very hard. His exam are based on Master level. Final exam is very hard.
It was my mistake to take him. You'd better self-study hard and god will bless u. He was useless, seriously, guys. Or take other professors if u need help.
Do not take in the summer session unless you can dedicate 6-8 hrs a week to homework and studying.Class is not too hard but if you dont do the hw, you will b lost. Probably a lot easier in the regular semester. Just a lot for a summer session.
I feel bad for him, he does want students to do well but the large lecture does not work for him. students don't care until they are failing and he can't motivate students to do anything. the grade is based only on tests- maybe he should grade on hw if he expects his students to do it and be prepared. he is still an easier teacher to take.
Tests are pretty rough, but there is a decent curve applied at the end of the course. Its important to pay attention, take good notes, and study the study guide questions. He does an ok job explaining the material and will try to explain in a different way if you don't understand, but certainly not an easy class.
One of the best teachers at Temple, class went by so fast, not boring a bit. Goes over everything crystal clear. Bad comments on him are probably from people that never showed up, more than 1/2 of the class never attended. Regular attendance, reading chapters (which are short) and taking notes will get you an A
He really isn't bad, Just do your part and you will be fine. I feel bad for him because no one speaks (or comes) to class. I know a lot of people are lost in class, but I wouldn't say its because of him. I feel as though the basics taught in courses before this one were never really completely learned so that is why people do poorly.
I'm getting tired just thinking about sitting in that class. Impossible to stay awake.I stopped going and just watched the class captures midway through. He just seems likes hes ready to retire, but overall he was ok. Cons:very hard tests, boring class, not personable Pros:class capture, grading scale-highest test counts twice, awesome curve,no homework
This is a tough class and will require a lot of effort. Ended up watching most of the classes on class capture instead of going to class. The curve was really the only thing that saved me.
I really don't think he is good, cuz he didn't tell lots important info or tricky points that you will definitely need in MyFinanceLab or exam. End up of giving out platitude lecture and people feel disappointed when they are taking exam while feel comfortable in lecture. Reply on curve? That's sad.
One tip for you: watch out his concept questions, that's basically what screw you up. Caculations are fine as long as you put down formulas on the cheating sheet. Concept questions could be quite mind-hitting if he want and do so.
Keen is a great professor. Real easy and straight forward. If you come to class, take notes, and do the actual problems..you'll be fine. Kids that complain and say that he "relies" on the curve are only mad because they didn't do the work. You can rely on class capture if you don't want to come to class, but just make sure you review the book good.
He's actually a very good professor compared to the rest of the Finance Dept. He explains things well and is willing to help you out. He may seem intimidating but if you go to his office hours, or even ask in class, he will explain anything. He's a nice guy and very smart. I def. recommend him
Great professor. Teaches the concepts and calculations and will go out of his way to help you understand them. Great way of teaching very glad I took him. Only 3 grades in the class (midterm final and lab) so pay attention and you will do well.
Good teacher, fairly easy material. Mostly just equations that he allows a cheat sheet for the test. Only grades are 3 or 4 exams and myfinancelab homework. Overall very good teacher that helps you when you ask for help. Fairly easy class.
VERY smart instructor whose experience in the industry is impressive. He taught the course pretty well and was exceptionally available for questions, both before and after class. My issue with him & the department is exam structure; they are very antiquated and not at the analytic level, and of course, you cannot use Excel.
Great teacher very patient
He is not very helpful very rude and not caring about his student in class he seems fine but when you get a chance to meet him outside he does not care and will not help you. I will never take him he ruined my GPA and he basically did not even care whats so ever.
DO NOt TAKE HIM.
He is helpful and willing to answer any questions. He does have his favorite students though. And he ignores answers he doesn't like. it doesn't have to be wrong. he is better than some Prof.s at Temple.
Dr. Keen is probably one of the most knowledgeable professors in the field of Finance and Economic. The materials are relevant and for the most part difficult to understand at first. This course will requires a tremendous amount of studying and self learning. Overall Dr. is an above average professor and you will learn a great deal in his class.
Mr Keen goes over every single step you need to know for the tests. If you do not understand something ask him he will review it again without hesitation. The way he teaches show that he wants you to pass but most impotantly he wants you to learn the material not memorize it.
Keen explains everything for the exams. the class has 3 exams and 10 homeworks. You can fails all the exams and still pass because the curve is so high.
Knowledgeable, helpful teacher. He is very genuine in wanting his students to the learn the material. I really am enjoying taking his class.
Good professor, he probably understands the material better then any finance professor at temple. Hes a good teacher too but he tends to get annoyed alot in class and can be moody. His exams are very hard though, as he doesn't seem to understand how to make a fair exam and makes the tests extremely difficult although this seems to be a dept. thing.
Literally useless. Material isn't that hard but he simply does not know how to teach. Better off skipping class and reading the text book. Does not seem to care at all. Speaks as if he is inconvenienced to be teaching you.
Professor Keen is very knowledgeable on his subject matter and clearly explains the material in real world terms. Class takes work and studying, this is not an easy A. Grades on a curve and he is always available for questions in person or online. 3 Exams, 12 homeworks and 12 quizzes. Drops 3 lowest quizzes and homework, plus curves I Got an A.
LOVE Dr. K. Took as 6 wk intense summer course. Keen is a great prof. who is always willing to help. Difficult subject and Keen makes it as easy as it could get. Stay on top of hw, make sure you're confident before letting him move forward in lecture, USE his review sheets and you'll be great!
Horrible. Dresses too casually. Bad with technology. Floods your inbox with email. Wastes an entire lecture reviewing order of operations and fractions. Sample exam is a joke. Inefficient in passing out exams. Exams are not on probs in MFL: almost all concepts. Formula sheet is a joke. No cheat sheet. No capture/online ppts. Attendance mandatory.
Very helpful, but you must ASK! Class is huge and projector is a pain, but he is very knowledgeable. If you struggle, see him ASAP and he will help you understand. You can get a solid B even if you hate finance.
I wanted to like Keen, but halfway through the semester I began to notice how unhelpful, condescending and annoyed he would get when asked to answer questions from students. The exams are incredibly difficult and the course material moves extremely fast without enough practice. If you decide to take Keen, make sure you're a good self-learner.
I took this class in the summer and did not experience any of the "moody Keen" comments everyone is stating. The material is very difficult (for me, anyway) and especially in an accelerated compressed format, I was sweating but Keen got me through. Very nice and helpful guy.
Horrible professor. Doesn't explain things well at all. I relied on the book for the entire course.
He will lose tests, lose homework, forget to activate projector. He will forget to pass you unless you badger him. BAD BAD BAD. Ironically, he does want to help!
Tough grader, wordy, confusing exams.Average on exams (100 students) is 70%, so you get the picture how bad it is.Unreasonably huge class where you won't learn anything.
not the best professor but if you read the textbook and do the exercises he provides online like the practice quizzes you will do well in this class. you get extra credit for attendance.
The man is older than time itself. After removing the dust from his shoulders he struggles to teach the class. Exams are very difficult. There are no notes online and he just reads from text book. DO NOT TAKE
take the class with someone else. he does not teach. you need to teach yourself. i was in a large class (about 180 students) and the average on the first test was a 69!!! does not curve
Nice guy, messes up a lot while doing examples in class. Homework is easy but exams are very hard. Would not recommend but there are very few options for 3101
The worst class ever. Professor is not helpful at all, unclear exam outlines. You are on your own. Poor quality.
I don't know why others give bad comments on him. He and TAs are very helpful and he posts videos on BB. If you have questions, either see videos, or ask help. The videos are VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD!!
He's pretty unclear and exams are tough but if you put in the work it should be an easy B at the least.
Keen is a pretty good professor, he explains things fairly well and works through a lot of examples in class. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you come to the classes, he gives you an extra 4 points to your overall grade, that is huge! I didn't study too much, but I did go to classes and I did very well in the class, it's not too hard at all.
Professor Keen likes to stand at the front and hear himself talk. He also explains the information in a way that only he and his TA's would understand. He is unable to relate to the typical business student. As a finance major, I somewhat struggled in the course but managed an A-. The class is not too shabby if you don't mind teaching yourself.
Pretty easy if you show up and pay attention. Homework is tedious but not that hard. Take good notes and do the prep questions in the book and the tests will be fairly straight forward.
This class is terrible, there are assigned seats, and 3 TAs watching your every move. If they even think they see a cellphone they will mark you absent. Can not take notes on computers or tablets. Attendance is mandatory if you want a ok grade. The lectures are just Keen going over the study guides for each exam. Good luck.
Topic good, not his fault but homework and quizzes really don't match up with instructional method. Spend a lot of time doing homework and miss the gist of the class. Formula sheets are provided, but one is not allowed to make any notes to provide clarity to formulas. Online tests are monitored by outside provider and intrusive.
Tough class. Really have to use the resources he gives you. If you strictly study off of the review sheet and understand the formulas or how to use your calculator, you will easily get a B or higher. I started this class with a C-, but I got up to an A- with the attendance extra credit. Show up every day and study the review sheet and formula sheet
lectures are boring and it is easy to lose track of material. exams are tough but understanding the review guide is crucial to your exam grades which in total is 75% of your grade. Exams are tough but he also posts online video lectures that are extremely helpful with the material. go to class for easy extra credit points.
Following his instructions you will be fine with your final grade. Especially follow his chapter questions!! That's help a lot. Also the videos he will post before test, you may or may not to watch it but like I said follow his instruments you will be fine.
Incredibly boring class and professor. The homeworks are pretty short and simple, the tests you definitely have to study for. His lectures consist of him teaching you towards the test while his TA's are like eagles watching for any reason to mark you absent. Gives clicker quizzes, but allows you to use notes. Formulas on tests. Still, a snoozer.
This is probably the worst teacher I have ever had at Temple. Go to all the classes and you will get 4% extra credit. Quizeshomeworks are pretty easy, but when you get to the exam you will be blown away unless you actually used the book. He can't really teach, and exams are pretty challenging. He also does not curve. Go to the TA's for help.
Assigned seating, no phones in class, you get the picture, lectures are very long. If you skip class you will fail. Tests are pretty hard, you have to know what you're doing to do well.
Dr. Keen is a good guy, just not a good teacher. The class is so big that you won't learn anything. Attendance is mandatory, don't skip class and you'll get 4 EC points on your average. No technology is allowed in class. Classes are pretty much Keen going over the review for the exams. Exams are very hard. No cheat sheet, except formula sheet.
This was a tough class to sit through. Really didn't explain the material well in class. He posts videos online that are much better and efficient at explaining the material but you have to sit through his class to get the attendance extra credit points. Without the videos his clarity rating would be a 1 out of 5. Not very helpful or approachable.
Prof Keen is very good and knowledgeable professor. However, the way he teaches is as if you already know the material. Youll have to study a lot and basically teach yourself in this class. The material is really tough so avoid taking this class in summer at all costs!!!
One of the most boring classes ever. I saw at least 5 people struggling to stay awake each class.. attend class to get 4 free points added to your final grade & for clicker quizzes based on the previous lecture! Do the hw & watch his videos. He literally repeats the same things. So if you miss something, watch it! His tests were pretty tough
Class no longer has mandatory attendance. Quizzes now use learning catalytics, so if you don't have a internet enabled device you can bring to class, you will get 0's for every quiz. These quizzes take entirely too long. They are 10 questions, and it takes the entire lecture. Keen does not know how to teach. I taught myself everything and did well
Keen doesn't seem to care anymore. He talks like you already know the material and doesn't do a good job of explaining the reasoning behind any calculations. There aren't many other options for this class, so be prepared to learn on your own. Its more helpful to read the book than go to class.
Horrible teacher. I dont know how he used to be, but he goes way too fast through lectures. He'll put a problem on the board and tell you to do it, when "time is up" He just says what the answer is and barely explains why. I never left a class so confused as much as I have with this class. I learned more doing the mymathlab homework than his class.
He is a mess. He is everywhere during lecture and doesn't follow his own outline. When he does follow the outline it is always unclear what part your on. The book is helpful, many of the 'prepping for exam' are used in the quizzes you take. The tests are kind of similar to the quizzes but many times he throws in questions we never really went over
If you ask me, Finance at Temple is going suck no matter who you take it with. I highly recommend Keen though because he makes the tests. Also, do the chapter worksheets - very similar to problems on the tests, which often have tricky wording in them. Not mandatory attendance but attendance does help because he goes over those worksheets.
Howard is probably the most adorable man at Temple. He is so willing to answer any questions you have and be as helpful as possible. This class is not hard, assuming you show up and pay attention, which you should be doing anyway or don't even both going to college. Take good notes and the homeworks and tests will be a piece of cake. Recommend!
Keen is a good professor, and lectures are simple. While there is no attendance, you need to go to fully understand concepts and practice chapter worksheet questions.I'd recommend taking him for intro.
Show up, take notes, do the homework and easy A. He even lets you bring a cheatsheet! The lectures are long, BUT GO ANYWAYS and get the worksheet answers, write them down on your cheatsheet, and bring them to the exam. And he does whatever to help you pass. He adjusted the weights of the exams so that you'll pass!
Tough class. Keen can be very vague. The tests are hard and not like the homework or chapter worksheets. Attendance isn't taken but is necessary to pass.
Keen is a great professor but, Finance isn't easy at times but, despite that he explains the material well, and always there to help! Keen isn't the reason why Finance is getting harder, it's the department making the material harder due to the demand employers have for college graduates to be more finance evolved. He does the best he can!
The class has no structure. He is always jumping from topic to topic making it impossible to take notes. The poor quality of the class may not be all his fault, the finance department has changed the class three times in the past three years. Just brace yourself because this class sucks.
The material is not easy, and the finance department really dropped the ball on this course. That being said, Professor Keen isn't bad. Assuming you take the 250 seat class, expect any issues to be handled by his TAs. Get ready for a moderate workload, with extremely difficult exams. Thankfully the final exam is the easiest. Cheat sheets on exams.
I took this class in the Spring and got a D+ but took it again in the summer in 6 weeks and got an A-. The Chapter Worksheets were multiple choice and he thoroughly went over all of the true/false which helped for the test. The class was only 40 people. If you can take it in the summer.
You have so much time to do the homework so get it out of the way, because other than being worth 15% of your grade it will not be useful on the tests! 3 tests make up 75% of your grade, takes highest test grade and counts it for 37.5%. Basically a free A just do the LCW and true/false problems, write them on your CHEAT SHEET and bring to test.
He is just a bad professor. He moves really fast (as in he will start a new topic and wont wait for students to pull out the exercise or notebooks). He doesn't create an environment to be able to ask questions. He jumps from topic to topic. He is prompt answering email, and the course is structured for you to get the highest grade possible.
Doesn't take attendance, lectures are online. Tests are tough, but the class really isn't that bad. Homework assignments weekly, all the answers are online. Just study hard for tests and you'll do fine. Don't buy the textbook
Has no power points so if you don't show up to class you'll be lost. But, everything on the exams is based on class lectures. I printed out the sample problems and T/F problems that he posts on blackboard because a lot of the test is based on those. write down the definitions of the formulas. HW is easy and gives plenty of time to it.
EVERYTHING you need to know to pass the exams (75% of grade) will come from his lectures. Homeworks are long & not similar to exams. Write down every equation, problem, and example (quantitative & qual.) he says & writes on the projector. Attend ALL Excel days; there will be Excel questions on the exam! Overall B+ is doable if you attend classes!
3 exams are worth 80% of your grade. Homework (a total of 27 assignments) are worth 20%. If you do mediocre on just one exam, kiss an A goodbye. Overall, the class wasn't bad. Keen is exceptionally knowledgeable and is always willing to meet with students to discuss anything. His TA's are extremely helpful
honestly this felt like a watered down version of a mix of accounting and statistics. A couple homeworks every week that you should just sit down and do all at once and forget. The exams focused a lot on his in class worksheets and true/false sheets, so take notes on those. Take class online if you can, it was relatively easy.
Worse professor in Fox, avoid if you can. He just lectures and speaks too fast so it is impossible to learn anything. Relies off of my finance lab. You don't need to go to class but it will help. There are no class captures and you have to teach everything to yourself. Content isn't hard he is just awful. good luck.
One of the worst profs I have ever had. Doesn't explain anything and when you ask questions he makes you feel stupid, so everyone just sits there in silence. Tests are hard and you get half a piece of scrap paper (good luck). He makes 5 HW's due on the same day as major exams...
Class isn't that bad honestly. Show up, listen and take notes on the problems he does in class. Do the homework and for exams you're allowed one cheat sheet front and back but you still have to understand the material. Exams are very similar to the in-class problems so showing up everyday is recommended. Main point to pass the class is take notes!
Go to class. Take notes. Ask questions. Don't be on your phone the entire class. Yeah the lectures are boring. But be prepared to pay attention. Do the worksheets. This is college. You gotta do something for yourself. He's more than willing to explain anything during office hours. Take accountability for yourself as a student & you'll be fine
Keen himself I found to be a fairly swell guy, it's more the class itself I had trouble in and I can't really blame him for that. I did fail the first time, but retook him for a B+. You just gotta go to class, pay attention, and try not to get too tripped up by the tests.
He was a good teacher and exams are crazy hard you need to study but he is there for his students which was nice!
Do you want to learn finance and the homework to be like his exams? Yes? Then don't take Kenn
It's not really all that necessary to go to class, I'd say. There's a ridiculous amount of HW on Pearson, but you can find a lot of help with that online (Chegg, Quizlet, CourseHero). There's three tests that make 80% of your grade. I've gotten anywhere from 90-100 on all HW's and an 80 on the first test while only going to a hand full of classes.
Very tough grading criteria (3 tests make up 80% of your final grade) and there is an insane amount of homework every week. It's not even worth going to lecture because 90% of class is him working through problems on the review sheet, which you can do on your own time. If you know the formulas you'll do fine, but I would not recommend you take him.
Took the 6-week summer class. Keen gives you so many resources, use them. GO TO CLASS, or fail. He literally tells you every thing you need to know for the exams. Yes there is a lot of homework, but it is easy. The material was easy, if you go to class. Exams are easy. Some make this class seem so hard, its not. Just put in the work and its easy.
The worst Professor I have ever taking. This guy teaches you absolutely nothing. He sits there and does problems the entire time in class which is not only boring but the problems are NOTHING like the ones on the exams. He hasn't replied to a single email i've sent him. Whatever you do avoid this guy at all costs. Nice guy, horrible teacher.
FIN3101 sucks no matter what, but Keen isn't a bad choice of professor. Attendance isn't mandatory but GO ANYWAYS! That is the best way to get a decent grade in this class. Exams are 80% of your grade so you have to take the time to study. Homeworks take long but make sure you do well on them because that's 20% of your grade.
Stay away if possible. He seems like a nice man, but as a Professor he is not good. The class is just him doing practice problems that he says will be on the test. This is false. He doesn't curve exams, but if the class average is a 52% he may possibly consider weighting differently. Finance is just math on crack with business terms. Good luck!!
Attendance is not taken at all but skipping is an easy way to fail. I can see why people don't prefer his class, as he sits in the front and goes over problems all day. This isn't "accounting with Wurst" teach yourself level but you definitely have to put in the work. Don't let friends distract you either, it's easy to get lost in this class.
I do not like his teaching style at all. His lectures are hard to follow and make it difficult to take thorough notes. He is all over on the board when going over problems no form of organization. He draws out the answers to the conceptual questions that you go over in class instead of writing the definition/ explanation. Exams are IMPOSSIBLE.
This dude doesnt even teach. Lectures are a waste of time. He spends each class doing 2-4 problems. You might as well go on the class captures so you can fast forward to the 10 minutes each class he teaches. Hard class, exams are highly weighted at 80% of your grade. No extra credit offered.
I don't know what these other posts are saying. Keen could not make his class any easier. Yes, tests are 80% of your grade, but you get a cheat sheet too. Homework is not bad either. It really is just formulas and you need to know when to use them. They just completely redid the course, so not bad at all.
Honestly the people below are just lazy. Not a hard class at all if you are willing to put in a little effort. Keen makes it easy to get an A, just pay attention in class and youll be fine.
Keen was one of the best prepared professors I had at Temple. He has an incredible grasp of the subject he teaches, so no question you ask will go unanswered. I appreciated his willingness to help students as he adjusted how he taught the course after the first exam to accommodate students who were having trouble.
Professor Keen is a good instructor. I am in the OBBA program so this is an on-line course. Keen records all of his classes and definitely listen to the recordings when made available since he gives you all the information necessary for passing homework and exams, and his numerous resources were quite helpful. If you do the work, you will pass.
Intro level Finance class. Attendance non-mandetory, Every class is on class capture, there is generally no point to coming to class unless you have legitimate questions about the subject matter. The tests are pretty brutal, and make up most of your grade. You're probably stuck with this guy, but if you have a choice I would choose someone else.
Professor Keen is unreasonable. Lectures halls are huge so attendance isn't mandatory but you NEED to attend to take notes on INCWS and Exam questions. These are essential to pass your exams, the questions are either identical or nearly so to the ICWS and Exam question sheets. Keen expects the MOST from his students in terms of grasping finance.
Worst teacher at Fox. May as well not go to any classes and watch YouTube lectures- he doesnt teach at all. He gives out formulas, gives out problems, and walks around the room, denigrating everyone for being confused. Crazy amount of HW, and tests are impossible. If you can take it with someone else do it, Keen should not be a professor.
Keen gets props from me because if you prefer to just stay home and read the textbook instead of coming to class, he allows you to do that. People on here say you have to attend class to pass, but I never attended a single class and got an A-. All you have to do is read the textbook closely and work hard on the homework and you should be fine.
Not the greatest professor. His lecturers are boring and he just goes over problems from worksheets. Im not a fan of finance so I had to put in the work to pass. Avoid if you can.
If you truly want to learn finance, take someone else. He says the best way to learn finance is to do finance, which may be true, but he simply doesn't teach. Goes over 3-4 problems each class and has TA's walk around to help you. 3 exams worth 25% each and hw worth 25%
Professor Keen is great, he works through problems in class and makes a giant lecture hall seem like a small class because he takes the time to answer questions. When he gives out formulas, he explains the concept behind them to understand why and when we use them and how they relate to the real-world. Very good teacher.
*AVOID IF POSSIBLE* Prof Keen is only there to collect a paycheck. He DOES NOT personally care about his students one bit. I learned way more from Khan Academy/Pearson than I did from going to his lectures. He is terrible with technology and will never take the time to learn it. Not a hard class but just know you will be teaching it to yourself.
Keen is your standard college professor. He knows his stuff about finance but his lectures are dry and boring at times. He's not the best with technology, but he does his best. Taking this class online due to COVID-19 wasn't very hard, though I prefer to learn from him in-person. He's the standard choice for FIN3101. Show up, study, pass.
Keen is a great professor for a college course. He explicitly tells you everything that will be on the test and goes over each topic at length. There's no gimmicks in this class, he wants you to learn. You can also go at your own pace. I never showed up to class once, I just watched the recorded lectures a few days before the tests.
Before the first exam, you feel that this class is an easy A and it likes a middle school math class, but after that, you will be like what is he talking about. All the in-class worksheets and problems just give you a little help for the exam, because the entire department will change the format of every question.
Professor Keen is a nice guy. Everything on the exam is based on the documents you go through in class. If you take good notes and answer all the exam questions and do the practice you should do well.
This class was extremely hard. The professor was unhelpful. If you do bad on a test there is nothing that can be done to help your grade. It is a shame that this is the way this class is set up. The professor does not care that the material is hard for students to understand and does not work with them to help them learn it better. Awful :(
His exams are very hard for a non-finance major. Just doing all the hw problems is not enough. You need to study alot
Keen just there to collect the checks. Just do all hw and study additional problems in textbook and backexams. You should be prepared enough to take test. He will answer any question u have tho.
This guy is on tenure, so he stopped caring a long time ago. He skips or rushes through the lecture to the point where its not worth the time of attending. His notes are trash and he could care less about actually answering your questions. You will teach yourself. If you ask questions he will belittle you for it. Dont take this class.
There is basically no point of going to the lectures of this mans class. He legit goes over past random exam questions that are not close to the real exams. The hw is easy but the tests are very hard. The average in the class was about a 70 and said it was our fault. With no extra credit very hard to do well in the class, but it is possible.
You must go to class to pass or rewatch lectures later this class. Highly suggest watching fox video fault before tests. He is clear and really breaks up concepts for students to understand. Tests are based on homework, exam questions, and in-class worksheets. I prefer watching lectures later because he takes long gaps for in class worksheets.
I did NOT go to any of the lectures because he only goes over exam questions and in class activities. His lectures are boring and he can come off as rude sometimes when he answers questions. I basically taught myself this semester and passed with an A. Exams are 75% and Homework is 25%. I just studied the homework and ICAs.
Professor Keen has mixed reviews from all of my friends and fellow classmates, but you should ultimately take him as it isn't as bad as it seems. I used to be one to slack off, but Keen was very persistent with making sure his kids understood his coursework. All of the homework is straight off chegg or quizlet. Take him, he helped a lot!!
STAY AWAY! I was forced to take Keen because he was the only prof. who's class wasn't at full enrollment. You are going to have to teach yourself, lectures are useless & he can be condescending when answering legitimate ?s. HW is all taught using excel which you CAN'T use on exams. Made us take an exam due Easter weekend! Horrible x 10. AVOID!!!!!!
He makes sure you know what you need to know. He is great at explaining concepts to ensure understanding. It's finance, so you must understand the concepts to use the formulas. If you like learning and pay attention then he is great. I've gained valuable knowledge from this course and enjoyed it.
Hard just for the sake of being hard.
He's a nice guy. Not the most exciting professor and teaches from the book, but he's very helpful if you go to office hours.
Professors like Keen make me unmotivated to learn as he is unmotivated to actually teach us about finance. Keen makes me hate business and Temple knows this but fail to hire anyone else to teach finance so you are forced to take him. Worst professor ever, avoid if you can.
Keen couldn't teach Einstein finance; but, Temple expects him to teach us. Be prepared to learn material outside of class. The saving grace is that the class isn't that hard. Do your homework, teach yourself the topics, and stay awake during class and you should be alright.
Exams are worth 75% off your grade and the materials he gives you to prepare for these exams do not help. I outlined every aspect of the material we had on hand for each of our exams and still did not do too well in this class. Only advice I can give you is to not take Professor Keen.
Boring class, but Keen was a good prof. Explained content fairly well, I learned mostly by doing the HW. Exams were tough but doable if you paid attention and did your work. You are able to use a one page 'cheat sheet' on the exams, so be sure to utilize it to your full ability.
Keen is a nice guy but this class is awful. Lectures are optional, nobody shows up bc you don't need them. Exams are 75% of your grade, and hw is 25% which makes it hard. It is easy to get 100 on homework, but I dropped the class because the entire class basically failed the first exam and there was no hope of me passing the class after that.
The hw's easy but doesnt count for much since exams are 75% of your grade. The exams are practically impossible and look nothing at all like the homework. You're allowed a cheat sheet but it will most likely not be helpful even if you write every formula on it. The majority of students in all of his sections have been failing and dropping the class
One of the awful professor that Fox business could have, in top of that he’s the chairman of finance , doesn’t care about his student, stay away from him you won’t pass.
Stay away from professor Keen, doesn’t explain at all , if you are ready to teach yourself go ahead. His exam never related to what you have studied. Skip him
What blows my mind is how Prof. Keen shows us how to do things in Excel and then doesn't let us use Excel on our tests. This is how things would be done in the "real world" and yet we're forced to use calculators, on which he doesn't show us how to solve problems. Acerebral and outdated. Avoid this professor if you actually want to learn.
Howard Keen is THE MAN. He is a little dry, but if you like Finance, this is a great experience.
Professor Keen was very difficult. Tests didn't align with materials taught in the course. He doesn't care if you pass or fail and puts little work into the class. This is Temple's fault for continuing to pay non-caring teachers who wield their power with the flick of a pen. He is very condescending by design to deter questions you may have.
Unfortunately, he is probably your only choice for this class because Temple doesn't care about who teaches their courses. He says the grading system is in the student's favor which it is not, having 3 exams worth 25% each is absolutely terrible, if you fail 1 exam you're basically screwed. About half my entire class dropped this course.
This was hands down the worst class I ever had. I understand it's a difficult class, but temple needs to fill that role with someone that actually cares. I've never had the worst experience. Nightmares to live on forever
He was so awful and does not care how well you do. You basically have to teach yourself because his lectures are useless. If you do not do well on the exams, you will not pass.
STAY AWAY!!! his class is extremely difficult. powerpoints are hard to follow must attend class to actually understand the sections on canvas. JUST STAY AWAY if u dont wanna fail
The lectures were boring. The engagement in the class was little to none. FIN 3101 should be taught in smaller sections tbh. Exams are 75% of your grade so take your exams very seriously. The math part was not too difficult but you also need to remember a lot of conceptual stuff. Taking this class means teaching yourself the content.
Professor Keen provides the resources to succeed in this class and even gave extra credit pop quizzes in class as well. The three exams make up 75% of the grade which stinks because they can be somewhat difficult. If you use your note sheet well though and study the slides and practice problems you'll be fine. HWs and Excels are easy 100s.
seems like he's past his time here at temple. doesn't show much empathy when answering student questions, has trouble with class technology, and is so monotone/boring. not as bad as the other reviews may make him seem, but he's not great either. temple needs to boot him and hire some younger/better professors for this required course.
believe the past reviews. rude when answering questions and his age shows through in his teaching. can't use tech properly, can't hear, and can barely walk. sucks that he's pretty much the only option for this class. can't communicate and doesn't care about students at all. it's time for him to leave temple and maybe even retire. hated his class.
When asked questions, gives attitude back. Overall, just a boring class. He doesn't care much about his students, and he doesn't teach to be very frank.
I have NEVER felt inclined to use rate my professor until I took Keen. Exams are worth 70% of your grade with low averages on the exams. Problems on test are a lot different than extra problems or homework problems, even if you study for hours it's difficult. Can barely answer questions and offers a measly 3% extra credit assignment taking 10 hrs
Keen acts and teaches like he wants to retire. He sits at his desk and goes through Pearson slides with zero enthusiasm. Learning through lectures is impossible, you need to teach yourself through homeworks. Exams are hard because he doesn't really teach but he makes the final worth 50% and drops a bad midterm which saved my grade.
Keen isn't the best professor, but his class is fine. He has 3 exams and the final isn't cumulative. He also has 6 quizzes, 2 of them are dropped. The homeworks and excels are easy. There is an extra credit too even though it's long. Going to class isn't helpful. You can do the practice problems by yourself. You can find the answers on chegg too.
Literally, take any other finance professor!!!
Howard Keen struggles to teach the materials accurately and teaches with an attitude that can be interpreted that he does not even want to be there. He seems uninterested in assisting students and gives an attitude whenever he is asked a question or to explain his steps.
Save yourself the trouble and take another professor. His lectures are not helpful at all , he constantly makes mistakes and all he does is read the pearson slides. The exams make up the majority of your grade and the exams are incredibly hard compared to the homework problems and practice problems.
Professor didn't really... teach? He read off of slides and seemed to have no motivation to engage the class. I felt discouraged by this and eventually stopped coming to class (don't think I would've learned any better had I actually came). I still at least passed the class, though I didn't come to any lectures unless there was an exam.
You log onto the zoom and find an extremely unintelligible man teaching about things he has no idea about.
I ended up teaching myself most of the material in this course. Lectures were very boring and hard to sit through. If you are good with Excel you should do ok in this course. TAs were helpful during office hours.
He can not teach, lectures do not match exam content.
Unfortunately, the professor is just old. I taught myself most of the course. He tends to ramble a lot and get frustrated at students for things out of their power. If you can take someone else, I'd suggest taking them.
Can make the most simple concepts complicated. I had to teach myself 95% of the material, and he would always explain concepts in the worst, most passive aggressive way. A quote: “I just taught you this, why can't you understand this?”, this was said after the TAs came over to assist a student and didn't even know what he was teaching. Avoid!!!
He is the most inconsiderate professor I've had at Temple. He will do the opposite of help you. He never responded to my emails, thank god for his TA because otherwise, I would've had to drop the course. He does not know how to teach but gets annoyed when students do/don't ask questions.
Most of the material in this class is fairly simple, but Keen does not do a great job of explaining it. You will most likely have to teach yourself a good portion of the material. The exams are a mix of conceptual and calculation based questions and are not very difficult. He gives a lot of resources to prepare for exams. Make excel sheets!
Worst professor I have ever had. He is so old, can barely hear any students answers... when he hears an incorrect answer, he gets sassy. Reads off slides the whole entire class, so you have to teach yourself everything. You pretty much pay for the class, just to research everything all yourself.
Real bland lectures but how interesting can financial management really get. Good class if you stay on top of things.
Professor Keen is the worst he genuinely is fake about caring for students and only caters to those who constantly participate, which in a 200 person lecture ends up just being the same handful of students. He doesn't teach any of the material clearly so you have to teach everything to yourself. Genuinely the department runs this class so poorly!
The TA Ryan Johnson has been incredibly helpful in assisting me on my homework whenever I have questions. Howard Keen is also a great guy and knows what he is doing. With the power of Ryan Johnson, and Howard Keen combined you are destined to succeed in this class, and I highly recommend this class for anyone.
Lots of homework. He lectures the whole class. He takes attendance and you have to have ur camera on the whole entire class or he marks you absent. The exams aren't terrible but hard.
He does not teach at all.
This was the most difficult class I have ever taken! There is not enough characters to explain how terrible this experience was.The concepts are not hard but plan to be your own professor, solely going off of his teachings will have you fail.I recommend avoiding this professor and hopefully another one will be better! Use the system not his material
Avoid taking this professor. He does not teach and just read off slides. He does not explain anything well and you have to teach yourself and even at office hours very unhelpful. Whole class did poorly on exam doesn't curve but rather blames us.
Its rough... do it online, i cant imagine what in-person is like
He needs to retire. SERIOUSLY
He has very high standards and expects a lot of work to be done each week before class. Exams are very difficult, and all the homework counts very little towards your grade. As others mentioned, if you take this online your camera is required to be on, and you must be in class for 100 mins for attendance to count.
