TAKE THIS TEACHER! HE'S THE BEST! he makes speaking in front of people fun when youd think it would be scary.
awesome and hot
he is a great taecher, When I started the class I didn't want to speak in front of an audience but after having Miller things have changed. Explains everything in detail and is all around down to earth guy. Also Understanding
Howard is a great teacher,he is so understanding and helpful not to mention intelligent and very sweet.Beyond being a great teach who is knowledgable about his subject,he is a great person and a good friend,he helped me so much last semester in and out of class.I'm definatly taking him again
He is a great teacher. My class was a fluke, over 20 people dropped out leaving around 5 by the end of the semester. It was a great class. He is very knowledgeable and funny. He is passionate about the subject which makes class more interesting. He has a great teaching style and you will learn alot.
Highest grade he will give is B. Condescending. Have to buy mini DVD-RW also.
Mr. Miller is young, cute, and sooo funny. His class is very enjoyable. However, he is very outspoken. He's not afraid to criticize you infront of the class.
the class is based on points and your told if you participate and do all the class activities you should be fine , but when i did my speeches he gave me low grades n my tests werent that great. but in a speech class isn't it the overall effort that you got up in front of the class? everytime! i got a D the balls this guy has!he gets paid to fail
F Howard Miller
Howard Miller was perhaps the best professor/teacher I've ever had... he was very very helpful, and always offered his help to us... plus he made things very clear... I wish he'd teach all my classes like back in 2nd grade.
good teacher..an **** but also a good friend..my speech was on the electric slide and it was funny he laughed and so did everyone else
If you do the work it's an easy class. If you don't it's going to be miserable. No free ride here but it's a very enjoyable class.
He was one of the best teachers I've ever had. He had a weird but good sense of humor. He is willing to help you get the best grade possible and he is very clear and detailed in what he expects of you. Very nice guy!
""Highest grade he will give is B. Condescending"" hypocrytical.."do the work, class, and i guarantee you an A," guarantee my a--, he keeps you going by telling you 'how well you're doing' ..and when all comes to an end you don't even pass. His class - not even worth the effort..besides you end up spending $10 bucks for a 'mini dvd-rw'
Professor Miller is fantastic. Do the work, you get the grade. I really enjoy his class. He's not so bad to look at either!
i am the shyest person ever. after taking his class i feel i can speak inf ront of anyone. he is very helpfully, and very honest (if your bad he'll tell you) and overall is a great experience. although his tests were somewhat hard, do good on your speeches and youll be fine. the only thing bad about him is that hes a red sox fan.
He's hot and he knows it. He's smart and he knows it. He's cocky...and can be rude/mean. But if you work at it and want to succeed, he'll help you do so. He wants to be able to use his intelligence to help other people. Just be careful with him.
he is the best !!!
HE IS SO ARROGANT
The class really isnt as hard as everyone makes it to be... just make sure you do your 3 speeches on time, thats what I did and I got an A,if your not organized and on time with stuff like a lot of people you will get a lower grade but he is a cool guy and a fun class
He's so hot!!! I might fail the class, just so I can take the class again with him!
Prof. Miller is a very serious speech instructor. Be sure to do all your speeches on time or you will lose 20% off the top. Be sure to practice your speeches before delivering them in class. Try to choose topics that you are interesting and have a good chance of doing well. I wouldn't recommend taking this instructor if you're not self-motivated!
Prof. Miller was the best teacher I've ever had. He really cared about us and pushed us to work. Lots of times teachers just let you slide but he didn't. I'm a much better speaker now thanks to him.
At first the class seemed like it was going to be fun. He makes jokes and makes the class interesting BUT he makes it too serious that it actually is...The speeches are easy but he expects too much. I saw a lot of great speeches and his criticism is way off...MR. MILLER its not that serious RELAXX
Miller is awesome. Funny yet straight to the point. Do your work and you'll be set.
Best teacher I've had a BCC. He's lectures are super funny and interesting. This is the most useful class I've taken. Miller know what he's talking about. It's not an easy class, but he give you oportunities for extra credit...if you work hard you can definately get a good grade.
This class, with Prof. Miller, helped me more than any other class I have ever taken. If you’re ready and willing to work hard, take this class with Prof. Miller. He takes the class very seriously and if you take it seriously, you will come out a better person. Be ready to work.
Prof. Miller is the MAN!!! Whoever said he hard and arrogant? More loike he's awesome and a straight shooter. Thats hard to come by nowadays. And the highest you can get is a B? Ummm A here. Anways, he is an awesome Professor, Definatly take him. Just don't be late, hand you stuff in on time, be nice and your golden!!!
He is good teacher, but he gets very serious some times, he needs a anger management class . He compeltely lost is in one of my class but he is very funny and interesting at other times. The tests are competely from the text. His lecture is very strong and makes you understand what works and what wnt work in the really world.
The man's nuts, but he makes the class fun. You gotta read the textbook because his tests come right from it.
dont take him!!!! he is a nice guy and funny but his class is very hard..... he marks u late if u come in a minute after the class starts... if ur looking for a funny guy take him but he will not give u a good grade... i hated him
i love this ****ing guy.
Not recommended. Although he is a talented instructor, he can be evasive, condescending, and childish, and seems to have an anger management or impulse control problem. If you want to preserve your GPA, reconsider taking his class.
he is way too critical on speeches. at least give a student a break if you see that they're putting the effort in and trying. it's not easy for everyone to get up in front of a group and speak. he loves to knock you down when you think you did good with a bad grade. what a loser!
miller was awesome! make sure you do your work and read teh text..deliver your speeches on time and you'll be fine..i hated public speaking before and now i'm taking another speech class..
he really knows his stuff, he's energized and teaches well. he expects of you, but you wont mind
he's a really smart guys and he's soo much fun. you can tell he loves what he does and he makes you love it too. you have to do your work in the classm and don't be late, otherwise, his sarcasm and sense of humor really make the class fun and interesting.
i agree with the students who think hes immature and condescending. he makes mean comments because he thinks hes funny and wants to show off in front of the class. this guy needs lots of attention and you better give it to him. if you get stuck taking him just be quiet and ignore his stupidity and youll do fine.
You will know how to give a speech after this class. Not a bad teacher and will givw help it you need it. Coll guy over all
AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!! Just make sure you prep for the speeches and do your self critiques. Quizzes do count, so BE SURE TO DO THE READING. You will not be able to use deductive reasoning to assume an answer as they are very specific. HIGHLY RECCOMENDED. ALWAYS TONS OF FUN. do the work easy A.
mad funny
He is amazing at teaching how to give an effective speech! and very enthusiastic about his work!
You're all ridiculous. Miller's class is great.Deal with the fact that you actually have to do what the course requires of you and you'll get an A. He doesn't "make fun of you in front of the class"; he tells you what was good about your speech and what didn't go over well. Is he sarcastic? YUP! But it's better than being boring!Great teacher.
People that don't care about school, shouldn't take Howard. He is extremely passionate about his craft and he doesn't get enough respect for it. I throughly enjoyed taking his class and we still speak today. This class really helped me become comfortable with public speaking. I loved the class. I liked his arrogant attitude because, hey if you show
Wonderful class. Learned a lot. Must do work, but Howard makes sure you understand what is needed to get the 'A'. Lots of fun.
Very good teacher. Ask questions, he'll deff help you. You get to re-do your worst speech, and he drops your two lowest quiz grades. Quizes are easy too, since he tells you what is exactly on them. Take himmmm! :]
Well, I just sat in on the first class. I went to the wrong room, but I didn't want to leave because he was very entertaining. Wish I had him.
Best teacher I've ever had. Hes so funny and he loves to joke around and have a good time. Plus hes really good to look at if you catch my drift ;).. hes so helpful because he really cares. And I basically love him
Howard is an awesome professor.I have taken two of his classes and they are a great time and hes hysterical. He is easy to talk to and is always willing to help you as long as you are putting in an effort.if you take his classes, dont think its just a BS class.DO THE ASSIGNMENTS, or you'll fail. I suggest his interpersonal communications course.Alyss
Howard Miller is AWESOME !! i wish i could take him for other classes besides speech ! He makes public speaking look easy !! i suggest to anyone scared of taking a public speaking class to take Howard Millers class !!
Sarcastic sometimes doesn't know how to respect..But he is a great teacher for speech..knows his stuff really well..but overall he is a very harsh grader..he takes his class like if it was an a.p. class or some sort..he has to relax a bit ..too hardcore..i don't recommend him
Howard is a great teacher if you can handle him. I feel like he made me a much better debater. He really forces you to come real strong and be on your game.... which can be a bit fustrating sometimes, but over all a big thumbs up.
Mr. Miller is really an awesome guy. He is a tough grader but I enjoyed every second of his class. He has a great heart and is a really great person. He cares so much about his students. I recommend him for anyone who isn't lazy about assignments.
treats his speech class like it is an AP class. follow the guidelines and you will still fail. don't take him
he is a great professor. he really knows his stuff and works with you to get through the class. his quizzes are pretty easy if you read the material and you really have to prepare for the speeches. i recommend taking him because he makes the class fun and exciting.
He's a huge jerk. -_- You're guarenteed to fail his calss..He knows what he's talking about but he's an anal hypocrite when he grades anything for you. I wish I never took his class.
If you are willing to do the work, you could not ask for a better teacher. He is up front about everything, and as long as you try he is willing to help you any way he can. I really was nervous about this class and now, next semester I am taking advanced public speaking with him!!
hes so cool. all you have to do is the work and you get an a. dont take his class if you wont do the work
he knows what he is talking about, and really helpped improve my public speaking skills, but he wants things done his way or no credit. only take it if u will do the work. he also grades speeches on how much he liked ur topic so be careful.
Im taking him for speech this summer. I'm really nervous about public speaking and need some helpful advice! How does he go about grading, if he can see that your trying your best. What does he mostly take points off in a speech?
Does he let you use note cards or bring a paper up, when making speeches?
Absolutely by far, BEST professor at BCC. Best professor I have ever had. Plus - he is hot.
He was funny and an overall good teacher, but sometimes he acted like a pompous jerk whenever you approached him to discuss a grade. It was his way and there was no discussing it. I got an A. If you pay attention and work somewhat hard, you'll do fine. Answers emails quickly but sometimes doesn't help in the email. I would take him again if I had 2
Howard is one of the kindest professors I know. He was willing to help me improve my speeches and explain anything I didn't understand. His honest critique and clear-cut requirements are for your own good; you EARN whatever grade you get out of this class. I got an A because I worked for it and followed his guidelines.
I liked SPCH 115 so much that I took Argumentation and Debate. I have Social Anxiety Disorder. He is encouraging and has made me a better speaker ? I definitely don't say "um" or "like" as much as I used to! The fact that he's extremely easy on the eyes helps, too. Easiness grade is in the middle because it depends on the student's work ethic.
miller is super nice......even helps out clubs and organizations like the honor society. only teacher i know whose willing to stay during office hours even when nobody shows! class was super easy, just follow directions and read the book and u'll be fine. you get what you put in!
GOOD THINGS: accessible, caring, funny, dedicated, quick responses to e-mails, hot, easy to talk to, easy to work with, wants you to work hard and achieve your best, lets you pick your own subjects as long as you follow guidelines, helps you if your chosen subject is really difficult. BAD THINGS: if you graduate you can't take his classes anymore.
I came into this class expecting the worst. I feel really lucky that I got Professor Miller as my teacher. The only thing I didn't like was having to tape myself; I think it added to how self-conscious I was.
He is my favorite teacher. He's funny but he gets to the point. If you do exactly what he says I promise you that you will ace his class... He is amazing...
he is very easy going and he gets to the point right away. he is also willing to help you out as much as possible
an AMAZING professor
VERY VERY serious about his class, super hard grader and very meticulous, try hard and you will still fail, I was one of maybe 4 students in my class to actually try and received a poor grade, IF YOU CAN NOT MAKE IT TO CLASS BY THE TIME IT STARTS ON THE DOT..DO NOT TAKE HIM!! if class starts at 4 and you walk in at 4:01 you will not be able to test
If you can't get to class on time do not take this class. I practically got an A on all my assignments but because I couldn't get there on time I ended up with a C. Do not be afraid to talk to him for help. He is very helpful but very maticulous and anal. He's a challenge but not an impossible one.
This is a no frills professor. He is serious about what he does and it shows. He is an extremely tough grader, but is also a fair grader. If you do half ass work, then expect to get a bad grade. If you come to class prepared, interested, and awake you will find him to be one of the best teachers in BCC. Public speaking can be very useful for students and Prof. Miller knows that. The things I learned in his class are valuable tools. Awesome teacher.
AWESOME teacher! And Im terrified of public speaking! He tells you EXACTLY what he wants in a speech. He is very clear! You do what he asks, and you get an easy A! He is Very personable and doesn't make you feel nervous asking him for help. I HIGHLY recommend!
If you have to take a public speaking course, do youself a favor & take Professor Miller's class! He expects his students to act like adults, and be on time with assignments, he is super helpful and funny (almost nerdy in a cute way). I can not say enought great things about him. I almost want to take another public speaking course!
Great great professor! Very clear on what you need to do to succeed, makes a potentially boring class very interesting. Enthusiastic, professional. Workload is not excessive but class requires some effort. Great guy - take his class!
SLAPPED with a "D", was very upset with the result in this class, he didnt clearly explain what he wanted and let you go on with out any correction or warning, 2 classes out of the semester he thought he gave us a set of instructions which he didnt,, and didnt ackowledge his mistake, was not happy and it hurt my GPA
This was a great class and Professor Miller is a very good teacher and a very smart guy. As long and you listen and do what he says you will do very well in the class. You will be able to use the speaking techniques he teaches throughout other classes in college and beyond. Warning: be on time and do your work. It will be worth it in the end.
He will scare you at first but stick with it. If you go to class on time, listen to his lectures, and do the work on time you are almost guaranteed a B average. He maps out exactly what he expects in each speech and as long as you meet the requirements on his speech grading rubric you will do just fine.
he is a great teacher in that he cares for the student and explains what is needed for one to achieve an A. Take this class with him if you have to take the class.
Worst teacher ever! He's nice but not a good teacher! Half the class dropped in 2 weeks, and he blamed it on the course itself! By the end we only had 8 people coming! He thinks he's teaching a Yale course! Nice guy but trust me don't take him !!
I took him cause of the good ratings but he's changed! Everyone says so. He has a high drop rate! And he's very strict! He doesn't like to give As but he says he does! He always has to find something wrong! He never admits his mistakes either
Don't take him
Worst teacher
Don't listen to the complainers below me. They clearly didn't do their work and they got the grades they deserved. Professor Miller is one of the best teachers I've had. Just do the work and go to every class on time and you'll pass. Speech is not an easy class, but Professor Miller helped me through it and I got an A. Sorry, complainers.
i would like to first say hes hot! second yes he is very technical but the course is easy and whatever that is difficult he is more than willing to help love his class he isnt boring by any means- i take him for 3 hrs and im constantly in tune listening...hes sooo hot!!
Great class, Easy if you do the work , and goes by quick if you listen. Overall- Good
I was freaked out about public speaking, but Prof Millers class was fun, engaging, interesting and he is very friendly, funny and smart. He tells you exactly what you need to do to get an A.Take him! He is prob the best teacher brookdale has.
Horrible!! worst class ever!
Very clear as to what you need to do, just a pretty tough class requiring a good amount of effort. Overall a good teacher that demands of you to try
Too much work (this is a community college after all) and he's waaaaay too full of himself. Badmouths students who drop out.
If you do the work, and you're not lazy - it's a COLLEGE, afterall. He used to teach at B.C. (boston college) and it shows, he's crystal clear on what is expected and if you're not lazy and work it's a fun class. He's a honestly good guy but he's a semi-tough grader but that is because he shows, tells and gives you everything to pass, take him.
He is smart, funny, helpful and very clear. He literally gives you a guideline, if you follow the guideline, you will get an A. He makes speaking in public kinda fun. And he is very hot.
This class is only difficult if you don't put forth the effort. Professor Miller is absolutely clear on what the requirements are from day one and was always eager to help! He's friendly, charismatic, makes it easy to talk to him, and makes the class far less daunting than it otherwise may be. One of the best profs I've ever had by a long shot.
so clear, if you do what he says you will have absolutely no problems!
He's really funny and entertaining.. Definitely makes everything clear.. you will only do bad if you choose to not follow the requirements of the assignment. He is really encouraging and is not afraid to compliment the people that do well. The way he taught this class really helped to showed me my stengths in public speaking.
great teacher. he made public speaking fun
Prof. Miller takes so much anxiety and fear out of public speaking. Kind, fun, helpful, great teaching technique and approach. Reads his students well. Follow his lead. He's a keeper.
How could someone rate him poorly? I LOVE HIM. He's easily my favorite teacher. He's real, funny, and constantly makes you smile. The work is easy and he's lenient with it. I actually learned about logic, omg. TAKE HIM. Can't stress it enough
He was awesome. Tells you exactly what you need to get an A. No confusion at all. He's funny and breaks up everyones nerves. Best speech teacher ever.
let me count how many times I full on cried &was up until 5am+ working on his outlines& preparing for speech day because i was so confused...very fast talker. hard to keep up with. sorta helpful. the work is HARD& it takes forever. real nice guy/ sometimes funny but TOUGH teacher&grader. lots of struggling to pass for everyone. take @ your own risk
I would not recommend him for a teacher. He grades your HW and TESTS with low scores no matter how much you put in to it. He is only gracious when you are face to face with him. Very loud and quick speaker so you will not understand everything he says. I personally hate this class. I would find someone else to teach you.
So impressed w/miller. Effort goes a long way. I despise the thought of public speaking, but this turkey got me through it. Brookdale is lucky to have him. I can't believe i actually learned some good stuff from his class. Highly recommend miller.
People who say Miller isn't clear and that they spent hours on his outline clearly didn't listen to him. If you follow what he says, you will do great in his class. He makes himself available to help you if you approach him outside of class. I would practice my speeches before with him and he would help me greatly. He is great and I recommend him
Not a big fan of his even though I got an A. Made doing a speech a little uncomfortable with his method and style. Grades you by the rubric so just follow for the A (really not that hard)but his downfall is snarky remarks and occasionally insults students. if you're late, prepared to be insulted and picked on throughout the rest of class.
Howard Miller is a fantastic teacher. I was terrified to take Public Speaking, but he made it very enjoyable. His teaching method is great, and he really tries hard to make you feel relaxed. DO NOT BE LATE! He takes attendance and punctuality seriously. Outlines were cake as long as you listened to what he said. Definitely take him!
Honestly a clear instructor, could be great teacher but his grading is completely off. My mom is a school teacher who helped me on assignments and even with he gives out F's like its his job. Save yourself time.. Pick different professor
Really enjoyed Prof Miller's class. As long as you do exactly what he says, are on time, and are not bad at following instructions, you will do fine. In the beginning the outlines are kind of hard but once you get the hang of it, it is a cinch. He made class enjoyable with his jokes and was pretty funny. I am sad class is over now. :(
I have no idea how he received a masters degree and why he is allowed to teach. He is by far the most ignorant professor I have ever had. His reasoning has no logic. Overall, the class is very easy as long as you do the work on time. Never by late, even by a minute or 4 points will be deducted from your grade, even if you have a family emergency.
Miller is great. He literally tells you what you need to do to get an A. If you don't receive a decent grade in his class it's because of the effort you put in, not his grading. He clearly defines everything you literally just have to follow instructions.
Honestly one of THE best professors I have ever had. I continue to hold a professional relationship with him and he has written amazing letters of recommendation for me. He literally tells you exactly what to do to get an A. Fair, honest, and hilarious. Love this guy
He is a funny guy and makes the class interesting but needs to be a little easier on grading. He acts like were professional speech givers. Don't use your cell phone is class because he takes off 50 points, I forgot we were in high school. I wound take a different teacher if I was you.
Definitely recommend him to anyone who has to take this class. If you are afraid of public speaking he helps you get over that fear. Also willing to work with students to help them get the best grade possible. Favorite class of the semester he's super funny too!! If you get the chance I would definitely take this class!
I was dreading this class so i took it in the summer to make it go by quick and easy, and it did. Prof. Miller is a great teacher and he explains everything to you so you understand them fully. You basically have to do the same thing for every speech..As terrifying as this class sounds its not too bad. Work hard and you will definitely do great!
Great guy, really helpful if you have any questions. All you have to do is pay attention (Not too hard) and do the work at home to get an A. Really funny also.
He will take off points for any little mistake, but that is because he wants his students to be the best public speakers ever. Don't use phone in class, takes 50 points off. Will not let you in if you're even one minute late, he locks the doors. But, he is clear on what he wants and will help you if you're struggling.
I would never recommend him as a teacher, no matter how many people say he's awesome. Tough teacher and tough grader. Talks way to fast and asks to much of his students. I don't know how many times I wanted to rip my hair out because i was stressing over his outline or trying to perfect my speech just to get a low grade on it.
This was my final class at Brookdale and I'm glad I took speech with Professor Miller. Yes, he may be a very harsh grader but at the same time I am now a MUCH better public speaker. Also, he makes it extremely clear on how to receive an A in his class. Participation is a must so never be late. He makes public speaking something to look forward to!
He is definitely NOT for everyone. He's one of those professors that tell you exactly what they want and won't accept anything less. Very, very tough grader. Take notes on everything, do the readings, and check online modules. Even the small details matter in this class. Also very opinionated and arrogant. Work hard, and you will pass.
Three major speeches and a few little ones. A lot of work goes into preparing for the speeches, but he helps a bunch in class. Gives good feedback during workshop days. I breezed through, but others struggled. A lot of work but not too bad overall. Professor is also pretty funny which makes the long lectures better.
Professor Miller is a true asset to the teaching profession. He has extensive knowledge of public speaking and is enthusiastic about seeing his students succeed. Smart & funny; his lectures are great! Not only will you learn public speaking, you'll become a proficient critical listener. 3 major speeches, workshops & final exam. Highly recommended!
It's very easy to do well in Millers class! As long as you follow his outline format, put in the effort, and act professional on speech day you'll be fine. There are a few 2-3 min speech workshops which prepare you for the "major" 5-7 min speeches; they help you get over any nerves pretty quickly! I was dreading this course but I'm glad I took it!
Terrible for public speaking. makes student feel like their nothing. DONT TAKE
Worse professor ever rude inconsiderate it feels like he doesn't want any one to succeed and he's always right it's his way or no way very tough grader every late is 2 points from total grade every absence is 4
One of my favorite professors. Made public speaking a breeze. As long as you do the work & follow his grading rubric for each speech you'll pass easily
Take him, take him, take him! Excellent all around! If you aren't comfortable with public speaking, you will be by the end of the semester. Prof. Miller encourages a supportive atmosphere. He is smart, funny, and wants to see his students succeed. He will take the time to work with you if you need extra help. True college professor!
Miller can be very sarcastic and tough but overall a great professor. He is a very fair grader! do you work and do it right.. you will get an A! He helps you grow as a speaker. Writing speeches and preparing for them is a lot of work.
Professor Miller is a brilliant, brilliant professor and man. The quintessential public speaking teacher. He creates a great environment and really makes you feel comfortable speaking in front of the class. He is extremely organized and will teach you to be the same way. Definitely 100% take his class you will not regret it.
How any one could possibly not love Howard I just can't understand. He's legitimately hilarious in such a sarcastic way I loved every second of class each week. His grading is so clear that if you exist and are willing to do whats on the rubric you'll get an A. I loved the class and would take it again in heart beat(even if I couldn't get credit)
one of the best teachers i've ever had. precise, smart, there for help.
Although he is thorough in his teaching, I would never take his class again. He talks about other students who are absent to the whole class. He is very sarcastic and belittles you if you say something he does not agree with. He ask you to pick a topic of discussion and picks it apart in front of the whole class. Knowledgeable however insensitive
please save yourself the misery and stress. he is the worst professor ive ever had. my gpa is a 4.0 and i even had a hard time in his class. do not take his course.
Do not take his class he is the worst professor I have ever had. Public speaking is not easy for everyone people get nervous and professor Miller doesn't make it any better. I did not feel comfortable at all in that class and I'm usually good when it comes to speaking in front of large crowds. Don't take his class!!!!!
Professor Miller taught this class for the first time online this semester and I couldn't be happier taking him. He responded quickly to emails and always was there to help if you were struggling. His office was open to us ay any time and when I met him, he was very nice and understanding about what I was struggling in. I would take his class again
If you need or want to take a speech class, this is the professor you should take. You will take what you learn from this class & use it in other classes and real life. Excellent teacher, clearly knows what he's talking about. He explains everything in the beginning of the semester, no surprises. May seem like a lot of work, but it's not.
Miller is a great Professor who is always happy to give feedback, especially when you ask him for it. Don't expect to get an A if you bs him, but do expect a good grade if you do exactly what he tells you to do. He's very clear in his grading and is always willing to help you improve. Would take him again if he taught more classes.
Those who say prof. miller is too hard are those who don't expect a college level education in college. Miller is an ideal teacher who actually teaches "extemporaneously" and is what a professor should be like. He's very helpful but also demands work done by yourself, as a good professor should. His class really teaches you to be a great speaker.
TAKE HIM TAKE HIM TAKE HIM!!!!!
the teacher is very specific in what he wants and makes it clear and easy what you have to do to get a good grade. always happy to help if you have a question, or will guide you in the right direction if you're confused. the teacher has a great sense of humor and is very easy going.
Excellent teacher. First day he gives the expectations on what he wants. The rubic is thorough so you know what to do to get an A on the speech. The course is challenging so if your expecting an easy A, don't even consider this course. If you want to challenge yourself and actually get something out of public speaking, take this course.
Hes a great guy, off the bat he tells you what you need to pass with an A. he will make you laugh and make the time go quick. just do the work and you will pass and he gives extra credit at the end.
Professor Miller is AWESOME! Clear expectations, supportive, funny, smart, and probably the best speech professor you can have! He wants to see you succeed. Three 5 to 7 minute speeches, a 2-3 minute speech and a final written test. You will gain the skills needed to be both an effective speaker and a critical listener. He's amazing! Take him!
Very nice teacher and makes public speaking a very fun and comfortable experience. Strict grader, make sure you follow the rubric exactly to what it says for each speech. You don't need the book. Nice guy and is funny, i would recommend taking him for this class.
Miller tells you EXACTLY what you need to do to pass, but don't expect not to work and get a good grade. He's by far the best professor I've had. Take his class if you want to take a real college level class that actually teaches you something! Maybe not during your first semester, though.
Professor Miller is amazing! If you have the opportunity to take him, do so! He tells you from the first day of the semester what he expects and sets you up for success. His class is organized in a way that if you do the assignments you will be in great shape. And If you ever have any questions outside of class he will email you back right away!
I don't recommend him.
Love love LOVED him. He was accessible, made public speaking not as terrifying, and was funny. If I could, I replicate him for all my classes! Definitely take him. You won't be disappointed.
Love love LOVED him. He was accessible, made public speaking not as terrifying, and was funny. If I could, I replicate him for all of my classes! Definitely take him. You won't be disappointed. Hands down my favorite professor (I'm a Rutgers student - he's AWESOME)!!!!
Professor Miller is a good teacher. Very direct and easy to understand. He is a tough grader, but lets you know exactly what to improve on. In addition, he is also pretty funny when he wants to be. 7/10
I'm sitting here with a couple of friends before class just thinking about what a great professor Miller is. He really cares and tries to make all of us feel our best when we're speaking. And he replies to email so fast! Definitely take his class!
This guy is so awesome! You should take his class. It's not so easy, but if you just follow his directions, you'll nail it.
He's the best professor I ever had. He's always there to help if you need it. Don't skip stuff. But if you're working the whole time, he's so helpful. 's
He was the BEST professor I have ever had. I Would 100% take him again!! He is sarcastic and funny and has an amazing personality. If all teachers taught like him the world would be a better place. If you are reading this please trust me and take him!! Don't listen to the bad reviews they were just lazy. If you do your work you'll have an easy A!!!
Professor Miller's course was my favorite course taken throughout my Brookdale experience. He tells you the first day what he expects of you and the grading policy. He sets you up for success not only in the classroom but for your future in public speaking. He answers emails instantaneously and gives you whatever help you may need. Great class.
Very strict teacher who is hard to access outside of class. I took his course online which has many different due dates throughout the week which makes it hard to keep up with the work. He doesnt read his emails during the weekend which is very frustrating when you have Monday due dates and he doesnt respond until 10 minutes before it is due
Public speaking sucks in general. However he makes it easier to do it. He knows his stuff and really points out things that will help you on your speech. You get readings for homework but halfway through the semester hell forget about it so you can just focus on your speech. However the reading are helpful for speeches and so is he. Good guy
Great professor! He gives great feedback, opportunities to resubmit your work or hand it in later if needed with less of a grade. Gives you easy extra credit assignments. He is very fair and easy to understand. Took him last semester online and I really enjoyed the experience. He always chimes in makes sure to push you to work hard.
Prof Miller is the best online professor hands down. I've taken a bunch of classes on line and have never had someone respond so quickly to my questions. (often it's withing minutes) Same thing with getting grades back. You always know where you stand. Also, he's so clear with what he wants you to do. If you just do the work, you'll get an A!
Excellent professor. Very organized. Quick feedback.
Top notch professor. He communicates with you through the entire class. I've had professors not answer emails for days and weeks. This one gets back to you so fast. It's so helpful.
Good professor, entertaining, will give his opinions but really cares about making you better. Just Do the work and youll be ok but he will grade strictly. Nothing to worry about
I can honestly say class was a pleasure. never have i had a more fair professor. Just do all the work, practice for speeches and you'll do great
I took him for the winter semester and would not recommend taking him, he gave us a ridiculous amount of homework for the ammount of time we had to do it, it was incrediibly disproportionate.
AVOID, AVOID, AVOID. i have never been more disrespected by a professor in my entire college career. Not only is his grading criteria very unclear, he is failing me for no reason, doesn't explain why he took points off of my assignments, and he's the worst to communicate with. He lectures you on your life choices and not the material. DO NOT TAKE!
Horrible!!!!! Very egotistical!!! Dont take this class!!
Although I took his course online, I think he's a great professor. He really communicates with each students. Makes sure they all understand the topic before he allows them to move on to the next week. I recommend him, if you are the student who will do the work. If you plan to slack of, avoid.
Do not take this professor. He is rude, and wants you to learn on your own. Might as well just not even do the class. I'm taking his class, and I helped other students in it more than he did. I put effort in every single class, I participate and chime in to help other students when he is not getting the point across, which is frequently. terrible.
Based on many good reviews here, I have to wonder if he is dealing with some personal issues, because Prof. Miller is not the man described in these positive reviews. He's impatient, insulting, and unwilling to help students who are clearly asking for help. I have never met an educator less interested in seeing his students succeed. disappointed
I love this man
Rude teacher, everyone says other speech teachers want you to succeed although Howard Miller acts like he wants us to do bad. Expects everything to be perfect or you get a bad grade
Rude, arrogant and disrespectful. He seemed nice in the beginning, but then you will see his true colors. Doesnt help or give good feedback, is condescending
This is the worst college professor ever. He seems like a genuine guy in the beginning, however that is not the case. He gives the most amount of work for a basic pre-requisite class. He takes points off for the most absurd things. It's almost like he thinks he's teaching a Harvard Engineering class. Had to work extremely hard for a C!!
Avoid at all cost! He was the worst professor I ever had at Brookdale. For a PS class, he graded like it was Harvard. He talks bad about everyone and always have something negative to say. One time in class when everyone was done giving there presentation, he hated everyone so much he left class and called us idiots
So very disappointed in Howard Miller. His sparse feedback and lack of concern left me expecting more. AVOID!
Do not take this Professor. He does not care if succeed. He is extremely rude and arrogant. If you do not do something right, he does not tell the right way to do it. He will just keep giving you horrible grades. Do not take this class with him as a professor you will regret it.
I actually really enjoyed taking prof Miller's online public speaking. I thought he was very clear, fair, and was always there to help if I had questions through email. As long as you do the work and put some effort in theres no reason you shouldn't do well in this class. I would definitely recommend
He's great. You work hard but you learn too. Super entertaining. in class.
He takes time to help outside of class. He's happy when you improve. Great experience.
Miller is the best professor I've had at Brookdale. He responds to email within hours or minutes! and he's really clear about how he wants you to do your work. He is really good to anyone who works hard. I asked him for a letter or recommendation and he wrote the best one I could imagine. Good, solid professor and guy.
Professor Miller is a great Professor. He gives great feedback neg/pos to become a better student in Public Speaking. Grading system is literally detailed and put out there so you know what to expect. Class Participation is key! He will help you become a better speaker in your professional and personal world. He's amazing!!
His class is interesting but he is a tough grader & takes off points at any opportunity he has. Claims he cares about his students but as soon as you miss a class or an assignment, he seems to continue to take points off.
Good professor. Do all your homework, give in effort and do the reading. Would help you become comfortable speaking.
Enjoyed his class for about two seconds before he showed us his true colors. Never met a professor that cared less about seeing his students do well. He grades INCREDIBLY harshly for no reason, and will take points off your grade with ANY chance he gets. He has unrealistic expectations of his students & claims to give clear instructions but doesn't
I checked the ratings before I took this Professor, and boy was I mislead. Look if you like professors that no matter what you do, you never get the grade you feel you deserve. Than hes your guy. I took him online, for public speaking. If you hand something in a SECOND past 8 am, you get 20% off, even if its online and technology isnt working.
if you can avoid this professor at all cost!!!!!! Hes was kinda nice for the first two weeks then he shows his true colors. Once you mess up once hell just keep taking off points. And even if an assignment is a second late he takes off 20%. for the love of god dont take this class with this professor, trust me !!!
If you have the option please don't take a speech class with this professor. I was very mislead by the reviews; he seemed to be nice at first but then he shows his true colors. He does not care if you succeed, and is very unforgiving when it comes to grading. You could be literally a second late handing in something and he'd take off 20%
Professor Miller's class was great, very interactive, and participation based. If you're looking for an easy sit-in-the-back-and-do-nothing grade, honestly why are you even in college. He teaches with high expectations because he knows they can be achieved. Overall great class. (P.S: Ask him about his Baseball excel spreadsheet)
Before this class, I liked public speaking but the prof definitely made me "drink the kool-aid" on the subject. Not only is Miller a "true gem" like the rating implies, but he is also an honest, genuine guy who DOES want you to succeed, unlike what other ratings say. He expects equal effort and I guess people can't handle that he's a stand-up guy
i always forget to do this but it's quarantine. i took this class like 4 years ago and still use the stuff he taught me. i'm on my BA now and i shred power points and public speaking. i remember his class stressing me out a bit but apparently it was worth it.
In the beginning of the semester I loved the class but as it went on it got worst and worst. He would always say please ask questions! and then when students asked he gave us attitude. Miller doesnt care about his students simple and clear. If you have something going on thats on you because he could care less.
This was the worst professor I have ever taken at Brookdale. He was cool the first couple weeks then switched up very fast. He is the most annoying grader. He thinks he is an expert at everything. It is his way or the highway, no questions asked. If you get on his bad side, which is very easy, good luck. He is terrible do not take him.
Worst teacher ever. Big know it all. Very annoying. Annoying grader. Terrible person. Do not take him
Extremely unprofessional, combative, childish. Very unreasonable with his grading system. Thinks his class is better then everyone elses class.
Stay away from this man. He is a terrible teacher, terrible grader.
This guy is the biggest know it all ever. If you want your opinion shot down once a week, howard is your man. He will always make sure he is correct and makes it known he has the power. Was not a fan of him
Worst teacher I have ever taken in Brookdale. He is a huge know it all and is the worst grader I have ever encountered. He is terrible.
been taking online classes for years now, this is 100% the worst teacher you can take. There was 30 of us when semester started and we ended with 10. I don't think anybody passed, his grading is awful and does not even give you a chance to pass.
Worst teacher I have ever had. Biggest know it all in brookdale community college. Never take him, you will struggle for no reason. Trust me.
Worst proffesor I've ever taken at Brookdale, do yourself a favor and avoid him at all costs.
I dont know why he gets bad reviews! I loved him! Hes funny and def puts out a good amount of work but as long as you do it you will get an A.. theres 3 speeches and as long as you give a somewhat good one you will def pass this class!
Took him not once but twice. Thought I could prove something to myself. Unfortunately it was a waste of time and money since he doesnt engage or cooperate like a professor should. It was waste of time and money and worst part is that I tried to complain and coworkers say ohh thats just him
An award should go out to him for being the worst teacher at Brookdale.
I believe a lot of the negative reviews are because of the student and not the Professor. This class was difficult and he admits that from the beginning. However only you make it difficult. If you do the work on time you get an A. There are only three speeches, with a clear rubric of whats expected and if you follow every point you get an A.
Nothing.
I have never taken a class in my entire life that is so incredibly difficult especially for an ENTRY level public speaking course. Stay AWAY.
This professor is horrible. He grades using his option instead of seeing if the work is correct or incorrect. He also gives work that will take you HOURS to do correctly and makes it only worth 10 points which is ridiculous. Even if your sources are credible hell mark points off if HE doesnt like the source. I do NOT recommend him at all.
Worst professor I've ever had. I'm currently also taking inorganic chemistry and developmental psychology, doing fine in those. This class is absolutely the worst class I've ever taken. Prepare to get points taken off for not standing correctly, thats right. Absolutely ridiculous how hard he grades on the smallest little imperfections.
I took Professor Miller in the fall semester for public speaking, my first semester of college. He is a fantastic teacher. He is definitely picky about how work is completed and submitted, but I find that it makes it easier because you know exactly what he wants and how he wants things done. I received good feedback on all three go my speeches.
I dont know why he has so many bad ratings. He is one of the best professors I have ever had. He really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Attendance is mandatory and you have to put some effort into his assignments, but thats any class. I would definitely take another course with him and he taught me a ton in just one semester.
Professor Miller is amazing! He responded to my emails and my questions almost immediately. The work that Prof. Miller assigns can be difficult, but if you begin early and put actual effort into it, he will always reward you with a great grade. He actually cares about his students, but he also wants to see that you care about your grade.
Understanding and personable guy. Clear on what gets you a good grade versus what doesn't, but as long as you do the work and make an effort to do well on your speeches, he isn't too strict. Make sure to follow all the directions for his speeches and it helps if you go the extra mile on reading/watching videos on your own.
Stay away!
Knowledgeable guy but he won't care about you passing or not. Fell behind in his class; while another professor reached out to me and got me back up to speed, this guy let me do a speech late voluntarily without reminding me it would take off 20% not that he looked at my grade anyway. Almost felt like it was on purpose. Don't take if you struggle.
Prof. Miller is a VERY understanding, caring, and genuine guy. Strict grader, but has super clear rubrics and expectations in class that he reviews in lectures. Show up, pay attention, and do the work on time and your grade will be fine. Unpreparedness is often reflected in grades, so practice and be ready for speech days or else youll struggle.
Spends more time on politics than teaching. I have never failed a class in my life but I have a 50 in this class. I turn all my work in on time, attend class, and try on my work. However, I still get poor grades. I feel like I am failing for no reason. Do not take this professor he is a total dingleberry.
While at brookdale I never had a problem with any teachers. Howard on the other hand was the most immature worst teacher ever. He thinks he knows everything and has a terrible grading system with an astronomical amount of work for one speech. Please stay away from him.
By far the worst professor I've had in my entire life. Hardest grader I've ever had. Took 20% off my speech because I was sick with covid on presentation day.
Professor Miller is awesome! Very thorough and helpful. Grading is fair and he gives very good feedback. His grading policy is on point. Practice your speech before presenting in class and things will work out.
Professor Miller does an excellent job of communicating his expectations. He provides a ton of tools online for every concept taught. He provides excellent feedback and even lets you redo homework assignments for better grades if done early. The people saying his class is impossible were probably just not mature enough for a college level course
Professor Miller teaches very thoroughly, provides super helpful feedback, and sets up his modules in an organized fashion. This is a difficult class especially if you are shy like me. But, Professor Miller was very supportive and encouraging. Of the multiple classes I've taken at Brookdale, I think I learned the most from his.
I took this Professor my first semester at Brookdale, I was newly out of high school and took this speech class as it was a humanities option I needed a credit for and this seemed fine to fulfill that. I was dead wrong, this is to this day (i'm now an undergrad at Rutgers) the worst professor I have ever had. So Disrespectful that I reported him.
The worst professor I ever had at Brookdale. All his lectures are about politics and he grades students by his own opinions. For the 3 speeches he assigns, their is so much work you'll be doing it forever and the homework assignments are worth like 10 points. I do not recommend this fool to anyone but if you do take his class, good luck.
average class
Strict on deadlines, but has clear expectations outlined in Canvas. I cannot tell you how important it is to LOOK in the modules, I got As just because I gave him exactly what he showed in the examples and emailed him when i was confused. Practice your speeches outside of class and hand stuff in on time and you should be fine.
There is no such thing as an A in Millers class. He is very judgemental, rude, and passive-aggressive. He comes across nice in the first one or two classes to keep you from dropping, it's all downhill from there. He constantly causes you to second guess yourself, and will not hesitate to put you over the fire in front of the entire class. DONT TAKE
I have never had such a difficult time in a college class but this professor gave me and multiple other students a zero because no one understood the assignment. He will call you out in front of the whole class and be very rude.
Ridiculous. The deadline was missed for some special reasons. After many patient explanations and evidence. But the professor just went to see his policy and gave him a 0. Its classes give three speeches a semester, and giving a zero for a speech is equivalent to making the student fail. Very rude. I don't think such people deserve to be professors.
Professor Miller was a good professor. He is strict on deadlines and expects you to be attentive in class, but his expectations were clear and nothing came out of the blue. Is he the best? Probably not, but do what's expected and you'll be fine.
He was very condescending. He gave feedback on content rather than form. In other words, he marked down my assignments based on what I wrote instead of how I presented the topic. I would not recommend his class to anyone.
I hate how yall are being so insensitive. His job to teach this certaib way and in this class there's certain topics needed grades off of THE SYSTEM NOT YOUR FEELINGS. yall sad. His syllabus is so clear yall and so is hisbgrading system. grow up he's a great prof. Hard grader only if you aren't studying. It's college yall get use to smh
by far was my favorite. I rlly loved learning and understanding his perspective on speech. He helped me a ton and I'm so happy I took this course. 100/10. I also asked students ab why these ratings are so bad. The students were salty students ( who didn't do their work and expected the easy way out ). Every bad rating is literally fake lol
Professor Miller is a great teacher he knows what he's talking about BUT the class is very overwhelming. It's a lot of work and he's a pretty strict grader. I don't think this class is hard more so just a lot. mentally be ready to put in a lot of time and thought into this class. you HAVE to be on top of work you don't have a choice in the matter
This is the best proffesor I've ever had by far. The bad ratings really are just people who don't understand this is a political class! He's truly super smart and knows what he's talking about and is super caring and understanding. Do work on time and do it the way he teaches and you're all good. Don't let the students who do his work get to you!
Amazing prof! He taught us so much in class and truly had fun and easy assignments, all the info was right on canvas and he truly gave the best feedback to help get better grades!! I see why people prove him wrong because he has a strong voice but that's all public speaker and he's truly the best. If you wanna actually learn and have fun take him
No words. Best professor ever. These bad ratings genuinely confused the hell outta me. HES AWESOMEEE
Best of the best yall
Professor Miller made me hate going to class. If you even do so much as mess up one small thing in your speeches, you will get a horrific grade, worst part is, he barely says how you can improve. He made a rude comment to me on the first day of class pertaining to religion that stuck with me throughout my time in his class.
Worst professor ive ever had so far. This class made me a worse and more anxious public speaker. It is impossible to get an A. I feel that no matter how hard I tried in this class (did every assignment, spoke with him directly, went above and beyond) nothing was ever good enough. He nitpicks every little thing no matter how hard you try. STAY AWAY!
Professor Miller is very passionate about speech overall and that is admirable about him. His lectures are fairly straight forward and he puts a lot of effort into his classes. However, he can go off on tangents that aren't relevant & he is a tough grader. You will be doing a speech every class and it can get very overwhelming with other classes.
This class was a mixed bag - the professor had high expectations, but if you put in the work, you can succeed. The lectures are informative, and using unstuckstudy AI alongside the course material was really helpful for my study prep.
He is the worst professor anyone could ever take. He thinks he's so cool because he wrote the curriculum for a community college public speaking course. Congrats bud. Don't take him. I hope he gets fired and lives in a cardboard box
I took him a while ago and I can say it wasn't a good experience. He would ramble about things that weren't relevant to the topic and whenever we did our speeches he would call us idiots and say we were terrible public speakers. I'm getting my MBA at Rutgers and currently hold an internship. Don't take him if you want to waste your time.
Professor Miller was very helpful during the class, explaining everything multiple times. Most importantly, I learned a lot, which will help me in the future with presentations for other classes or in career-related speeches. I got an A and believe that those who left negative comments may not have put in the effort required.
I would NOT take speech with Miller. I tried my best and it still wasn't good enough for him. during his class he seems nice and funny. if you do a speech and make a slight mistake he calls you out for it. emailing him questions or for help and he emails me back with very passive aggressive tones, I don't recommend taking this class with him.
This class was a waste. It is a public speaking class where you are tasked with preparing three presentations on different topics. It would have been great if we were graded on the public speaking aspect of the presentation, but this professor grades/comments as if you are supposed to be a subject matter expert! Please, take anyone else.
Worst professor ever he slandered my name in front of the whole class, I reported him and the school did nothing.
These bad reviews sort of baffle me. This class isn't what I'd call super easy, as I've spent hours on research and practice, but you're given rubrics and outlines that tell you what you need to do, and if followed, you shouldn't get a bad grade. Professor Miller is a great professor who cares about those he teaches and will help you if you need it
Great professor, class is somewhat hard. Your whole grade is pretty much the 3 major speeches, but if you follow his instructions and just practice a few times, you should pass. Pretty light outside of that, and he is hilarious and makes the effort to know everyone's name which I respect. Class can drag on a bit, but its not bad
He is good when it sometimes comes to explaining stuff but when he is grading I feel like he deliberately downgrades
He's a good teacher but very strict. No late work is accepted—even if an assignment is an hour late, it gets a zero. Being even a minute late to class costs you a point off your final grade. The class is stressful, and speeches take a huge amount of time to prep and practice. You can get a good grade, but it requires too much effort.
He nit picks.
He is the toughest grader I've had here at Brookdale. Even when it is obvious everyone in the class is struggling with something he just skips it and gives out bad grades. He allows multiple attempts on assignments but doesn't give feedback to help you do better. DO NOT take this course unless you plan on perfecting every assignment to his liking.
The syllabus and rubrics don't seem bad at first glance. They read as if you will be graded objectively if you make an honest effort to comply. That's not what really happens, though. In my experience, the professor's grading is totally subjective and sometimes even arbitrary.
One of the hardest classes I've taken, though I'm not that bad at public speaking. Can't say for sure if it was the professor or the class itself, but he is one of the toughest graders I've ever had. Felt like it was impossible to ever get 100 on something even if you follow the rubric. Also, would loose points for being even a minute late to class
