Although sometimes hard to follow, his lectures generally incorporate some humor and good current events discussion. Case analysis is good and informative, highlighting important parts of the case. No busy work, good exams. Overall, highly recommended.
Prof. Schweber was the best prof I had. He is thought-provoking and inspired me to do my best work. To me, that's all you can ask. I would take any class he was teaching.
He is a great guy, an interesting but somewhat excentric professor. You will enjoy his class.
The questions for rating him don't do him justice. He is one of the best professors I've ever had. He is not easy, or always clear, but his lectures are interesting and excitng and he is very humurous. Take a class with him!
Great prof, super interesting, insiteful, and brilliant, easy grades, good content, great humor!!!
Schweber is tough to rate. Some days he's so easy to understand, some days I have no idea what he's talking about. But it's worth taking a class with him because he is entertaining. Though I've noticed he's tougher on you if you disagree with him....and the TA's are the same way....
Great professor! Very knowledgable about the subject matter, at times it is a little intimadating. The only tests in the class are take-home essay questions that you can work in a partner with and turn in together for the same grade.. you can also work with as many people as you want.
Gives absolutely the most amazing lectures you're likely to experience, period. Also has the habit of playing music as people are filing in to the lecture hall -- everything from Renaissance church music to 60's rock. Distinctive, intelligent and awesome. I walk out of every lecture saying "wow".
Schweber is a great professor, very entertaining and intelligent. He talks a little fast sometimes, but has a great sense of humor and really makes dry texts interesting and brings out a lot of detail.
He knows what he's doing. Awesome teacher. I LOVE his class. I'd take a class even if i hated the subject, as long as he were teaching it.
I am just in complete admiration of the man to convey a very boring and otherwise hard to follow text to the class and make it entertaining and easy to follow, and then he applies much of what he says in today's world. without a doubt, one of the smartest people i have ever come across.
Schweber is a God. He is an amazing lecturer, besides being slightly hard to understand sometimes, he is truly captivating. He is a top gun, the champaign of professors. Grading is not that hard. Worth just sitting in on his lectures.
Simply put- GREATEST PROFESSOR EVER!
He is the most amazing professor. His lectures are captivating, and help you understand the text better then you thought you ever could. I never missesd a lecture because class was so helpful and interesting. Take this class! I promise you will love it.
I think he's overrated, simply put.

a great guy. recommend with no question
He gives very unclear lectures, to the point of incoherence. He is arrogant beyond belief and asks questions to put people down. The class is pointless, take a law class with Downs instead.
If you don't mind being challenged, you will love his courses.

The game of Howards class is: hi-light every passage he reads to your class. This is going to be very useful when you do those take home essay exams. All the quotes and important information (well okay whatever he thinks is important) is in those hi-lighted cases. All you have to do is outline, make your damn point, and quote from those lovely pointed out passages. If you know the game you can get an A in Con Law EASY. Yes he's arrogant but I found it more entertaining than annoying.
Do not take his course if you do not want to be challenged. He seems arrogant, but really just tries to make you think by asking hard questions. Also, expect to get a stupid answer to stupid questions. Not a prof for people who like their hands held, but great if you want to be challenged.
This guy could have a reality tv show made about him! Weirdo...but the smartest man ever. he sure knows it
Get Teacher, gets you interested in what he is teaching!
Schweber is a great guy. Talks too fast, and his class isn't easy, but you learn alot. I enjoyed his class. He's so smart, and funny.
He talks so fast! Sometimes it was really hard to write anything down, but section allowed for anything we missed to be clarified. Highlight everything he reads from the book - it will help so much with exams. The class is hard, but he was a great prof - really knows his stuff and really challenges you.
Maintains high standards but does all that he can to help students reach them. Altogether affable within and outside the classroom and well conflates humor with instruction.
He is incredibly smart and hilarious. I really enjoyed his teaching style. Awesome teacher. The class was moderately difficult but what can you expect from upper level polisci.
Easily best professor so far. Really knows his stuff. Really entertains class. Assigns lots of reading, and has very hard tests.
He's great. He's funny and he keeps the class engaged.
Prof. Schweber is hard to put in one box. Some days he is easy to understand, other days I don't take notes because I have no clue what he is talking about. However, he is an extremely intelligent man and I enjoy just listening to him and learning that way. Don't take his classes if you don't like to be challenged.
One heck of a guy
Very laid back and able to keep the class involved
He gives no powerpoints, you spend the class period trying to discern what he says when he talks too fast. Highlight the passages for the tests. Tests are take-home with a partner option. The class is very philosophy based so don't take it if you don't like to theorize. Prof. is entertaining though which makes it worth taking.
Impossible to follow. Class relies heavily on the reading material, so you have that. The TA's tend to be pretty good, other than Ricky during Fall07. Arrogant attitude, sometimes it seems that he's speaking just to be heard. There are better PS professors out there.
HS is hilarious. Unfortunately, he talks himself in circles. Most of the class has no idea what he is talking about most of the time. Didn't do the readings (Sparknoted it!) and still will end up with an A or A/B. Not a tough class if you are a good writer.
Had HS for First Amendment. Awful lectures in terms of getting the students proper material. HS is funny when he rants, but the material just is not there for tests. Does not understand what students ask him. The essays are pretty easy if you can issue-spot. In the end, take Downs instead if you can.
Hilarious, but sometimes can go on tangents. Somewhat difficult material, need to be fairly decent writer even though tests are take home.
HS is a breath of fresh air from power-point lecturers. He is equally and extraordinarily brilliant and witty, but sometimes tries to hard to prove both. Tests are challenging, but they are open note/open book and final is take-home . Readings are arduous, but HS does a great job of linking the readings together in lecture. Best ps prof i've had
I like HS a lot, and will def take him again if i have the opportunity. power lectures were hard to sit through, but Schweber kept me engaged and i found the material very interesting. The only problem is that he can be hard to understand, in addition, he is somewhat all over the place when he lectures, those combined making taking notes difficult
I stopped trying to read the cases before going to lecture. Lectures are pretty hard to follow sometimes because he knows so much, so discussion is really where you get the best understanding. Read the important cases before writing the take-home exams. He also loves class participation!
I can't say that he is a bad professor, but I would not recommend his classes. I took 209 and 412 and he never got any easier to understand. I learned everything from discussion, so go to discusion. Read everything prior to class, it makes it easier to follow along. I didn't like asking him questions; he is very arrogant.
He is very intelligent and you can learn a lot from him if you make the effort. His lectures are very fast paced and text-based. I would definitely recommend taking this class.
Lectures very useful - he makes sure the students understand. Somewhat creepy if he gets to know you because he stares at you during lecture. Very intelligent man, makes funny jokes that no one laughs at. Definitely recommend taking political theory with him. Mehreen is a good TA if she's still in it - just participate and you'll get an A.
HS is smart, funny, and a great lecturer IF you can follow him. He talks fast and if you can't take notes quickly you'll have a hard time. Essays are somewhat challenging but he does a good job of making you think about implications and flaws of cases, which are basically what the papers (and con law in general) are about.
Your grade will be based on which TA you have. Lecture was hard to follow and most of the time did not pertain to the assignments. I would recommend taking first amendment with Downs for a better grade.
HS is absolutly hilarious. He is funny as hell and makes lecture go by extremely fast. He is a bit hard to follow sometimes but is very intelligent. Get to lecture 20 minutes early and you can listen to him ask questions and go off on popular culture and current events.
Most interesting class I have ever taken. Awesome. I think he has read every book ever written. Take him!
Schweber's lectures are really good and it's really important that you go to them! Sure, you can read your the text, but he will explain what the themes are during lecture. This class has a heavy load of readings, but you learn so much---it's cool. Be sure to go to the Hebrew Bible/New Testament Lectures---awesome. Take this class!
umm ummmm ummmm. he says that alot, but overall I liked his class. It is ALOT of reading, boring reading but when he covers it in lecture it makes sense. I had him for 209, only one midterm and that and final are both open notes so if you go to lecture and just take really good notes you will do fine.
HS is a great professor, but if you do not have any interest in con law his class will be brutal. Gives turgid, meticulous lectures that he freewheels. The guy is pretty brilliant and knows it--he definitely likes to hear himself talk. Encourages participation in class but class is always too intimidated to speak up. Take it if you like con law.
Professor Schweber is an excellent professor. I would highly recommend any class he teaches. His lectures are thought-provoking and engaging, and he also has a knack for satire. He's also very good at explaining complicated concepts clearly. Don't leave UW before you take one of his classes!
Professor Schweber is an engaging lecturer, extremely well-versed in the course material, and fair in his policies regarding tests and readings. The readings can be long at times, but are reasonable for the most part. The TA you are assigned will influence your overall experience considerably, however. A VERY interesting class, highly recommended
Very full of himself, and loves being smarter than you, but he is still a very good prof. Often incomprehensible in lecture (especially if you blink), but he is helpful one-on-one with clarifying and explaining. Tests could be challenging, but they were very fair--you could even work in partners. Grading was fair. Tough class, but enjoyable.
Makes an an otherwise boring subject interesting and thought provoking! Take home essay midterms and make sure you keep up on the readings!
Great professor. Very interesting, very opinionated, very confident that what he's saying is the one and only correct answer. I would strongly recommend him. Three take home exams and participation are the only grades.
Very arrogant and full of himself. Gets sidetracked very easily. There is no point in even going to class. Easy class though because of the grading system.
This class drove me nuts. Because there are only 2 exams and I got an AB on the first it was impossible for me to get an A in the class. The grading is subjective and its really hard to get a good grade.
Schweber is great. He loves his field. His lectures are thought provoking and engaging. Disclaimer, the class is HARD. But, as a pre-law student, it's completely changed the way I think about law, which is pretty incredible.
Great class, had to work for my grade. I got a BC on the first midterm, but an A in the class. Schweber treats his lectures like conversations, which is good (entertaining) and bad (hard to take notes). Textbook is worthless, you can just wikipedia all the cases.
Schweber was the greatest professor I have ever had. He has an intense interest in his students and is extremely helpful. His lectures are incredibly interesting and he makes them fun and entertaining. He is also brilliant. I highly recommend him along with the class Political Theory, very interesting.
Ineffective lecturer. Not very helpful.
Really interesting guy to have a conversation with, not lecture a class. I don't usually mind professors that don't stick to an outline, but his lectures are incredibly hard to follow. This makes the take home exams quite difficult and very time consuming. Also lots of reading.
If you are interested in poli sci or law very Schweber is a great prof. He is very engaging and helpful. One thing does bother me about his class if his interpretations of the readings are the only way they are looked at.
This class is like a history of political thought and will make you question the political and social structure of the world. An absolutely brilliant man- exams are take-home and make you work and think about course material. Not to be taken for an easy A, Schweber will challenge you to ask the right questions. Very personable man in office hours
He is cool and wants to know his students and has outside meetings often. Class isn't hard but time consuming. Midterms are take home but sometimes frustrating because you have to use to professor's interpretation to get an A. If you go to lecture, take good notes, and are wiling to spend time on the midterms (10+ hours) getting an A is not hard.
Professor is interesting and knowledgable. I learned a lot in this class. Exams are difficult for take home exams. Didn't buy the book. All the readings were online.
Prof. Schweber was a great professor. Very accessible and available to students, and genuinely cares about those who reach out. His lectures are very interesting and help clarify the readings immensely.
Hands down best professor I've ever had. Lectures are engaging. He really knows his stuff, and you can tell he's passionate about it. It's not a class you can skate through, but if you put in effort you'll do well. He really likes talking to students outside of class, even if it's not class related. Great class and professor, you'll learn a lot.
The material is great if you're interested in political theory. He is very funny and entertaining. He is a hard professor and his expectations are high. His exams are 4 take-home essay-structured exams, about 6 pages total for each exam. Overall, I learned a lot and I really did like the class. Would I take it over with him? No, I have a life.
Lectures are extremely hard to follow since he talks for an hour and a half - no PowerPoint, just his voice. However, he's pretty witty and absolutely brilliant. One of the smartest people I've ever come across and you can tell he loves teaching and cares about his students. He's not the easiest to follow by any means, but he's good at his job
If you have a chance take a class with Prof. Schweber. He is absolutely brilliant and will make you feel better about all the money you spent to attend this university.
Honestly one of the top 3 profs I've ever had. Some reviews say he acts like a know-it-all but he just knows his stuff. His lectures are well put together and relevant to whats on his (take home) essay exams. He is wonderfully sarcastic both in and out of lecture and cracks a ton of jokes. Recommend highlighting book as he quotes from it often.
Prof Schweber is a professor I will always remember here at UW-Madison. He is absolutely brilliant and loves what he does. He loves talking with students and sharing his experiences. People say he's arrogant- but if you know your stuff why wouldn't you express it? 3 take home exams- easy if you go to lecture. TYPE NOTES. Never read the book. Easy A
Lectures are interesting and the material is supplemented by personal anecdotes and knowledge from his other areas of expertise (History and Law). Grade made up of four take-home exams and a few short papers for discussion section. Favorite class my first semester at UW.
This is my second semester with Schweber and I think he is great! He really likes that he is smarter than everyone else--some may seem him as slightly arrogant--but the truth is he is! I loved Constitutional Law and definitely recommend it. When you take notes, pay close attention. 3 take-home midterms (one is the final) (can work in pairs).
Not a good professor. I am an A student and I do NOT reccommend unless you have EXTENSIVE knowledge on the constitution.
Best professor I've had. So smart. So inspiring.
This guy is a real piece of work. He is very intelligent but should not be teaching undergrad classes. I have never been more stressed out than when I am taking his exams. His tests expect that you already have the Constitutional law knowledge of being graduating from law school.
Whoever said Howard is inspirational must be joking. He only believes his opinion is correct. Will not listen to anyone in the class other than himself.
Tough professor, without a doubt. That being said, he's probably the best professor I've had at UW-Madison. Amazing lectures, always incredibly thought-provoking. People will say he's conceited, but really he's just incredibly smart and tends to use sarcasm a lot. Funny guy, and if you work hard you can pull off a good grade.
Professor mentioned in class how he was unhappy on how students were reviewing him. Funny how a constitutional law professor wants to take away free speech. Anyways, dont take this class with him. 150 pages of reading a week, exams take 15-20 hours to complete over a weekend and it is impossible to get an A. I worked so hard and it didnt pay off.
I took Schweber's Con Law class with honors in 2014. I'm surprised people complain about his arrogance. He is a great professor, and engaged outside of the classroom. Truly fascinating person. Yeah the class is hard, but you're in college, idiot. Who knows, you might learn something.
Professor takes his exams with the honors students so they all get As and Bs. He grades on a curve so the students who are not in the honors class are left to fight for the Cs and Ds. I would suggest taking a different class if you can.
Howard Schweber is an arrogant egocentric man hellbent on getting his agenda across; he pompously subverts energy away from the class to his own liking; he is overrated on his expertise because he reads newspapers all day.
One of the best professors I ever had, he is smart and knows it, however he opens up case law and connects themes in a way that is outstanding. Truly wants his students to do well and demands a lot of them which is a good thing I think.
You'll want to do all of the readings, because his lectures make it worth your time. If you don't do the readings, you may feel a bit lost. Overall though, I really loved his lecturing style, he's very energetic and welcomes questions after lecture.
Take home exams, easy if you go to lecture. Take a long time to do, but can work with other people. Take it.
Schweber is an amazing lecturer! Dont try to outsmart him, you cant. Dont do the readings, they are long, dense, and you wont understand them. Pay attention in lectures, go to section, and make friends with the TAs! Tests are 10 questions MC (graded by TA), will take at least 10 hours for an A, worth it tho because thats the only work in the class
His class is so hard my body hurt.
Schweber is very engaging and makes it clear what you should be getting out of the individual readings. Due to the heavy material discussed I dosed off a lot during lecture, but what he says really supplements the required reading; if you really have to choose one or the other, go to lecture over reading, though since all tests are open book, read
Very esoteric in his teaching in lecture and office hours. Instead of proving things--which he could with all his degrees--he hints at things using his popularity from his humor and speaking ability and extensive background. Very symptomatic of UW where this behavior happens often as if there's a university wide scam going on.
I graduated this class and I don't know what politics are or what political theory is.
His exams for 209 were take home, but that did not make it easy. You really have to interpret what each reading is saying, which he helps with. Schweber's mind is filled with so many things and sometimes he does not know how to filter that during lecture, which makes it a bit hard to follow.
Grading consisted of three take home midterm exams, each varying in weight. They had 10 questions that required a minimum of 250 word responses. Doesn't post lectures online so attendance and good note taking is a must.
Professor Schweber was one of the best professors I've had. He's a brilliant man with deep knowledge on pretty much any political theorist you can think of. His take-home essay exams require a lot of reading, but I found the readings to be really captivating. Honestly his class was one of the best classes I've taken.
He is an incredible lecturer and knows the material scarily well. Just be engaged in the readings and skim them. All you need to do is show up to class and take good notes and you will do well. The exams are all take home so its nice to be able to have your notes while you write the responses.
Prof Schweber just knows a lot, which makes things a bit different because he literally doesn't use Power Point. It's just his knowledge. But his is an amazing way of teaching 3 long take homes but you're really in trouble if you skip just one single lecture. You'll learn a lot not just about the constitution, also history & polisci in general.
No powerpoint. If you have a voice recorder on your computer, use it. Will help when doing tests. Be precise in your language. Papers need to be logical, coherent & formulaic. Address opposing arguments. There is one correct answer always but wrong answers can get 9/10 if argued sufficiently. Respected guy, consider befriending for grad school recs
He's an extremely knowledgeable professor but the make sure you're genuinely interested in constitutional law if you want to take this class. He assigns ridiculous amounts of reading and has very lengthy take-home exams. No powerpoints or anything so you have to pay attention in class.
He's a very solid professor, but make sure you're genuinely interested in con law if you take the class. It's not easy but it's interesting. There's about 100ish pages of reading a week and the class is graded off 3 take-home exams and a moot court brief. Definitely a lot of work, but you can get in A with a decent amount of effort.
I liked him and typically thought the material was interesting, but I just found it hard to go to lecture because it always seemed to drag on. That said, I still did fine in the class. There's tons of reading assigned, but you don't really have to do it. You only need to reference it for the exams (so you need the book), which are all take home
Class was semi difficult. Two take home midterms, a mock court exercise, and a take home final. The take home tests were difficult and time consuming. Schweber knows his stuff but the tests seemed a little excessive and difficult.
Schweber is a great, intellectual man. His class though is incredibly difficult and dull. He speaks way too fast in lecture and rarely repeats information, so good note taking and listening skills are essential. Two difficult take-home midterms that really test your knowledge. Grading criteria is unclear with high expectations. Unorganized syllabus
Schweber is funny, personable, and is incredibly intelligent. His lectures, however, are difficult to follow because he goes fast and does not repeat anything. My advice: low key record him. Play it back, it turns out that he actually gives you exam answers in his lecture.
Professor Schweber is so nice and curious about the students' insights relating to the topics discussed in class. Always extremely inspirational and approachable outside of the class! He cares about his students a lot and treats all questions with lots of patience and respect. His class is both extremely interesting and challenging.
This guy is probably the most incoherent, confusing lecturer I've ever had in my four years at Madison. He will ramble for the entire block and you have to parse the bits of information that are actually relevant, the rest is completely useless. His test design is a joke and the questions are bad (you'll see what I'm talking about if you take this)
Extremely knowledgeable on the subject matter and delivers lectures with intent. Has no issue making his opinion clear, but is able to explain concepts without letting personal bias muddy the waters. Exams are partner or solo, and are exceedingly fair. Put the work in, get a good grade.
This man did not know how to do an online course and it shows. He consistently uploaded his lectures late and there were times where the lectures far exceeded the normal class time. His class is weirdly structured an a 20 minute lecture may take an hour to do in order to understand his twisty and incoherent sentences. It's a no from me.
I don't know how his in person classes differed, but I found Prof Schweber to be very intelligent, however, he forgets that us college students are not on the same intelligence level when explaining concepts. He also talks very fast and its hard to keep up. A 20 minute lecture will turn into 1.5 hours. The only grades you have are 6 hard quizzes.
Lectures are rapid fire info, of which all is important. I don't know how you could jot down all the information in a regular non- online semester... so maybe a recorder? The lectures require full concentration & the quizzes will make your brain hurt. He is approachable and wanting to help you. My fav part was guest appearances from his cats
This class was difficult do not get me wrong, but understanding the material and getting the quiz answers right was so rewarding. This probably would have been way harder though if it wasn't online since I rewatched lectures frequently.
The only professor I've ever had that actually made me glad I spent the tuition money to take the class. Dude is brilliant
Professor Schweber is one of the most knowledgeable professors I have ever had. Lectures are very dense and if you take hand-written notes, expect to take about 7 pages per lecture at a very fast pace. He is passionate about all the material, but sometimes it is hard to deduce the "main point." Take home exams are graded fairly, take about 4 hours.
Hands down one of the best professors I have ever had. I have taken him for 3 classes and he has been amazing every time! He is so intelligent that his lectures will keep you thinking about class content for hours after class is over. His exams are definitely challenging, but if you attend class and do the readings you will definitely get A.
Great professor! Loved the course, it is very important to come to lecture. Readings are helpful if you want to get an A, but you can get by if you just go to lecture. Easy grader but that could have just been the TA. A super fantastic lecturer, doesn't use powerpoint but drops knowledge constantly. If you're interested in law, take a class of his!
Professor Schweber is my favorite professor I've ever had. His course is difficult but so worth it; it's easy to get overwhelmed with the many readings and fast-paced lectures, but he's always willing to help and offer more insights. He's an extremely entertaining, engaging, and knowledgeable professor. Take his classes!
By far my favorite professor at UW. Caring, hilarious, and is good at his job. Be sure to stay on track of readings and lecture as they are important for quizzes and exams! Lecture is recorded, but it's more fun to go in person.
Easily the best PoliSci professor I've ever taken a class with. His knowledge on his subjects of specialties is endless and you can ask him about any current event topic and he'll cite text back at you. Lectures are dense but exams are more than fair and actually engage you and make you think.
Prof. Schweber is an extremely knowledgeable man and a charismatic lecturer. However, he takes lecturing literally and just talks unfiltered for 75 mins. It's difficult to parse information from his lecture. Additionally, he's EXTREMELY arrogant. Do not make the mistake of suggesting that he's wrong, even when he is. You'll never live it down.
He is extremely knowledgeable. Lectures are pretty dense, as he just talks for the whole 75 minutes, but they are recorded. He also provides note outlines for each lecture which helps to understand the sources being talked about during lecture and are easy to take notes on. Quizzes are also very reasonable. Overall a very good professor.
Very knowledgable and great readings but only if you have the time to dig into them. Provides no criteria for exams at all. Lectures take full 75 minutes and are a mix of relevant bits and long tangents - would be very helpful for visual learners if he provided slides and concepts to follow. All the class is just him talking.
For those who wish to remember, and Prof. Schweber, if you choose to view this page, know this: Your passion for your subject is unmatched. You are a bank of knowledge, and you are more than happy to share your wealth. Your effort was greatly appreciated, and your impact will remain in this program for years to come. Congrats on retirement!
I will cherish these lectures for the rest of my life! They were absolutely fantastic and inspiring. The content was dense but exams were not difficult, and open not, so I never felt pressured. He is hilarious and caring. Sad to see him go! :)
Learning from this professor feels like a privilege. He is fun, increadibily well spoke, and doesn't seem to dislike people who are new to the topic like some poli sci professors. His theory and constitutional law classes are amazing, and I would go out of my way to take courses from him. 10/10 to have a drink with too.
This class made me switch my major because it was that bad of a class. The professor, though seems like a cool guy, wasn't the best. His lectures didn't use slides, he would often go off topic, I genuinely don't think anyone had a clue of what was going on in lectures and he didn't take constructive criticism very well. Just save your time.
Great person to yap with in office hours. Class itself was a little confusing to navigate. The lecture formats were okay, the outlines were helpful but the professor got off topic a lot.
Schweber is very interesting and entertaining, but his lectures are impossible to follow. Stands at podium and lectures at you with no presentation for 75 minutes straight. Grade is entirely dependent on 3 take home partner exams. Assigns an overwhelming number of readings. TAs are your best friends in this course.
