Great Professor. Very clear wit his examples and he's funny too. Cracks alot of Calculus jokes and stuff. Keeps his students interested. Tests are reasonable..studying is required but they are not that bad. Daily 1 question quizzes are give on stuff learned on previous day. Super easy. Great Prof. Recommended
Very friendly and helpful. His notes are easy to comprehend and they help alot on exams and quizzes. Attendance isnt mandatory but quizzes are almost everyday at the end of class. Very clear and precise with examples, goes thru step by step. If you have any questions, he's more than clear in answering them. Takes time in remembering everyones name
best professor i have ever had, i'm currently stuck in 1B with some women who has an awful accent and i'm nearly failing now. I did so well in his class and understood everything. Best professor! would've liked to take 1b with him but he wasn't teaching it for some reason. I would've gone out of my way to have him even taking 8 am's when his are
Awesome professor. I would reccomend him to anyone taking Calc. Very clear and wants his students to do well.
Incredibly helpful professor. The man knows the content well and even though he's full of corny jokes I never dislike going to this class. From what I understand the other Calc1A/B professors are very unhelpful. The problems he assigns can be challenging but his explanations are crystal clear. Sign up for his class ASAP.
He is a good teacher. However he practices favoritism and he can make you feel uncomfortable intentionally. I stopped trying to ask him for help because he would always give me funny looks and sometimes he would ignore me completely when i was just asking for help. He is two faced, although he teaches well.
Great teacher. Recommend taking him. Gives hard problems on quizzes and homework but that helps you get ready for the tests which aren't as hard
Great Professor! Professor Troughton knows how to teach and he teaches everything CLEARLY. However, he gives hard homework problems and relatively hard quizzes. But come test time, you are READY for the exam!
Troughton is an excellent professor and one of the best I have had. He is extremely clear in his lectures and his test and quiz questions are straightforward. Would take him for every math course at UML if I could.
Gives a quiz every other class. Takes points off for notation errors on quizzes and tests. He really knows the material and he teaches it well.
Troughton, very rude!!! Makes fun of students for not understanding certain topics. When you email him expect a bad response. Quizzes are fairly easy if you study. Exams are easy but stressful, only 50 minutes for generally 7 questions that take at least ten minutes each. Troughton could be a good professor but his qualities get in the way.
Best math teacher I have probably ever had. Makes Calc 2 look very easy. Very enthusiastic while teaching just loves math. Math teachers don't get better than this guy. Tests are pretty easy as long as you have prepared yourself by making sure you understand the material. Just be ready for the quizzes every day easy to lose points just be careful.
Very, very difficult course. However, it's very worth it. You come out of class being much smarter, and having a true understanding of the material. Lectures are clear, concise, and quick. No wasted time whatsoever. He can come off a little caustic sometimes, and is very sarcastic, but overall a superb teacher. Don't go in expecting an A.
He gives quizzes every other session but they are fair game. He is very clear and answers every question you ask. He knows his stuff and more importantly he has talent for teaching. I recommend him.
Calculus 2 is very hard so all teachers must me considered tough. Troughton tried to make the course material clear but it really didn't work. Quizzes every other class. Quizzes are very tough and brings your grade down. Tests are extremely difficult! Would try to get another professor.
Great course, with valuable information that you can apply to your career almost immediately. It may seem difficult week to week, but you just have to go through the assignments a few times, and you'll get it. You have to put the time in. Study, practice formulas, and you will pass.
I'm kind of biased because I legit think Microeconomics might be the most boring subject ever. If I had one complaint, it was that the grading was very objective. It seemed like he was docking points for not wording your answers the way he wanted them worded. But all in all he was a good professor and I'll give him a shot for Macro.
Amazing professor. Extremely clear and to the point. Can be tough if students skip classes or don't take notes. Gives the usual amount of homework for introductory courses but has a quiz every other lecture. As a result, I found myself prepared for the exams well. He's not for students who are looking for easy grades and light lectures.
Nice guy but he is probably the toughest grader I've ever had in my career as a student. Forget partial credit that's not a thing is his class. Long story short I'm not a fan.
Amazing professor. He gives clear explanations for calculus problems, and never fails to make include the students in his lecture.
had him for Calc 2. Great professor, really knows the material. very energetic. quizes every other class, but are very top level. only downside: he is heavy on the MyMathLab HW.
Listen to my advice, do not take a class online with this man. He is a horrible professor. Very condescending and finds as many ways as possible to deduct points from you. What should have been an easy class turned out to be a nightmare. This is coming from an A student.
Honestly, Troughton is a good prof. He tries to make a super boring/difficult subject (calc2) interesting. He designs his class to be hard because he actually wants you to learn. HOWEVER, he is extremely rude and condescending when you ask a question. HE EVEN MADE FUN OF A STUDENT WHO RECEIVED A LOW TEST GRADE.
Keep in mind I got a very good grade in this man's class. HE WOULD MAKE FUN OF KIDS IN CLASS FOR DOING POORLY ON TESTS AND HE MADE A LOT OF MISTAKES IN CLASS. Kids would point out his mistakes in class, and he would half-ass apologize for making the mistakes and move on. He talked all the time about how he liked failing kids.
Makes things unnecessarily difficult. I am an A/B student with a 3.6 GPA. This class destroyed my GPA. I worked very hard. Spent about 10-15 hours a week on just this class.
Some people really like him some people hate him. Personally did not have a good time in his class. He makes you feel stupid if you dont know something, hes also an adjunct so he was never around to help. Be cautious, had to retake Calc 2. Try Erica Y first. If you pick this guy just be ready for soooo many quizzes.
While Troughton is tough, you WILL learn calculus. This guy takes his job very seriously so if you give him any BS you will be sorry. His expectations are fair and clear especially if you're a STEM major. He's tough but I repeat, you WILL learn if you do what you're supposed to. Also quirky and loud, even at 8AM.
Mr. Troughton takes his job very seriously. He does have high expectations, however he is very meticulous in his lectures and will clearly outline what you need to know. He will try to scare you with the level of difficulty of the material. Show up, pay attention and you'll do fine. Great teacher!
One of the best teachers I have ever had. The material is difficult, but he introduces it in an easy-to-follow manner. He definitely is passionate about math and teaching and that comes through in his thorough teaching style. Do all the homework and attend every class and you will be fine.
Troughton's an adjunct which makes absolutely no sense to me bc he should be a permanent professor. He's an amazing teacher, he teaches you everything he knows in class and you have to review it at home, but that's it. I'd recommend him if you're a math major, if not then you'll probably find him extremely difficult
He comes off as intimidating at times but if you put in a little extra effort, he can be very reasonable. He explains calculus very clearly so that you can be successful in this course and other math courses to come. The number one thing to remember is to follow his expectations clearly because he can take off points for making even minor mistakes
He was a really good teacher, made Calc 2 understandable and not a total nightmare. Gives quizzes every other class, they're tough but doable and helpful for exams. Not the nicest guy, you just have to work hard, do all the homework and don't miss quizzes/class.
Nearly everything you need to read is in the lecture notes, but you'll need the book because all assignments are through MyStatLab. Assignments are crazy hard if you don't read and prepare and projects are brutal (except SPSS). The grading is merciless: class average was 54.8 at the end of class, median grade was 64.3. Dedicate 4 -6 hrs per week.
Troughton is a great guy, and the biggest issue people have with him is that he requires you to do the work correctly and doesn't accept anything else. The course can be difficult for many, but if you show up every day, do the work, and take notes you'll be fine. Do the class examples after class to actually learn it. Recommend him for Calc 2.
Troughton is one of the best math teachers I have ever had. He is very adept at explaining the material and his class structure is designed to make you pass if you put the effort in. Every other class has a quiz, but if you utilize his online worksheets and do the takehome quiz resubmits, you will pass with flying colors.
Engaging lectures. If you put in the work you will succeed. The physical book is not required but MyMathLab is. Quizzes every other class. Grades not just on right or wrong answer but on notation as well.
You can clearly tell Professor Troughton has such a passion for math and teaching. He explains topics in a very clear and sometimes even a funny way. Religiously do the work sheets, DO NOT study MML problems. He's a tough grader and very strict on notation. This is a very tough class, you need to put in a lot of effort, he makes you work for it.
Professor Throughton is amazing. He is really tough though, so be ready to study and work on hard problems. However, you will be out witj a very solid calculus background. He is really good at explaining and teaching in general. Recommended.
Grades harshly, but doesn't explain grading criteria and marks off for "preferred notation" of his. When the entire class doesn't understand something, he'll complain about how everyone should study more outside class. When you ask a question, he usually barely explains and says "we need to continue". Definitely wouldn't take his class.
He's a great teacher for Calculus II. Despite being a tough grader on notation, once you get used to the grading style it becomes easy to get decent grades. He spends more time than most of the other teachers so expect a lot of examples for each topic. His second class of the day is the best according to him.
By far the worst teacher I have had. He is very rude and disrespectful. When you ask him a question he makes you seem very stupid in front of everyone. While reviewing for the final he said, "Ill see you guys next semester when you guys retake clac II since I am grading your exams." this comes to show you that he is a very hard grader and rude.
The best calculus professor Ive had tbh. He ACTUALLY explains the concept AND how you get the equation/s instead of making you simply memorize everything. Everyone complains about notation but its literally calculus so obviously if you wrote it wrong itll be understood differently. Definitely recommended if you could put in effort.
Dr. Troughton is one of the most inspiring teachers for calculus I can think of. He has a very specific structure to his class: Monday is a test then lecture, Wednesday is test resubmit due, then Friday is take home due. He explains concepts meticulously, and people who complain about him being a harsh grader never took his feedback and fixed it.
Phenomenal lecturer. However he is an incredibly tough grader to the point where it was obnoxious. I would be able to explain the concept and get correct answers and still barely pass the quiz or test. His class sunk my GPA before I even had gpa to sink.
I would take all of my math classes with him if I could. He will try to scare you with the tough material but its not as hard as you think. Pay careful attention, write everything down and you will pass with ease. If you dont care about learning the material and dont put in the effort, you will have a hard time. Study notes and quizzes.
He can be nice but he can also be extremely rude. He sends out an email after your first test with the odds of you passing the class based on your grade. Makes it known most will withdraw or fail. Tough grader & VERY picky. Will take points off if your final answer is correct but you made a mistake in your sidework. Very discouraging.
Teaches with the intention of failing his students, basically assumes everyone cheats and is willing to give zero's on a whim, regardless if you cheated or not. Terrible teacher and terrible human being.
Do not recommend
This guy is a character to say the least. Between all the intentionally bad jokes he makes, and the expectance of us to fail and constantly telling us to quit instead of work hard, I can't pick which trait is his worst. Besides a terrible personality, this toolbag gave me a 60 in a quiz of 4 questions all of which were correct, but wrong notation.
Proudest achievement is his Pass/Fail/Drop percent of 43%. That's all you really need to know. Likes to make the class hard, deducts points for the silliest reasons. Don't even bother emailing him for help, don't think he even reads them, just sends a generic reply based on the subject. Worst math teacher I've ever had
Toughest grader I've ever had. Exams are worth 80% of your grade. If you don't know the material like the back of your hand you're screwed. Be prepared to work as hard as you ever have lol. Wouldn't recommend at all.
Taken during pandemic. Prerecorded lectures that explained everything really well. Solid resources for additional practice. Strict and picky with the way you show your work.
I'll preface by saying I am horrible at anything math related. Stats was required for my degree. Prof. Troughton made the course very simple. Detailed how to use SPSS and was fair on grading the projects. If you stay on pace and don't slack you'll be fine. Your final grade is on you. I would gladly take another course with Prof. Troughton.
Professor Troughton should be avoided at all costs. He is rude and nasty to everyone. His philosophy is to be as strict as possible with grading so that it will teach you "accountability". His grading on tests and quizzes are so strict that they are unfair. Do not take him.
Very rigid when it comes to grading, generous with scales, provides feedback and solutions to assignments. Emphasizes the fact that you have to work hard (doing more than the mandatory assignments) in order to well in this class.
Howard is a disrespectful person who thinks that no other professors are doing enough. In a world where STEM degrees and classes are hard enough, he tries to make it harder in the students by taking off credit for any silly understandable mistake he can. He grades certain students different than others and is well known for retribution grading.
Pretty rude to students.
High quality professor and class. Yeah, he is strict and can come off as rude sometimes, but I gained so much out of the class. If you want a challenge, take Troughton's class.
Awful. I wish I would've checked this before but please steer clear of this professor. He gives no partial credit what so ever on quizzes and exams. He is also a very strict grader who does not care at all about giving students 0% on quizzes and even exams. Worst professor I've had so far.
Professor Troughton is a tough grader, super picky about notation. His lectures are great. There are quizzes every week and three tests. The MMLs don't help so it's best to do the worksheets and other resources. Study ahead of time, learn the notation, and you'll be fine. He can be a little mean in class, but at the end of the day math is math.
Professor Troughton is a challenging professor. His grading is really hard, but if you pay attention to details and work out the problems how he does them (which is helpful) you will do well. You MUST study Calc 2 everyday if you want to do well. It is a hard class. I was able to get a 96 final grade because of my hard work.
Really good at making you understand the material. However any questions can be futile as he doesn't give much support. He's also pretty strict grader but is true to his word about grading and has many resources there for you to use. As long as you attend class and make sure to study and put in the work its not too bad.
On one hand, Prof. Troughton is a notoriously hard grader and goes through class. On the other, he explains the concepts extremely well during class. He's the type of professor that really wants his students to succeed in life, and he does that by instilling fundamental skills in his students. In this class, you really need to want to learn to pass
Don't do this to yourself. Yeah, sure he is a great professor to learn from but he will embarrass his students in front of the class for his entertainment, he is opinionated and mean when grading, and he prides himself on having a 70% failure rate in his class. If you're into it, you do you, but for normal people, I suggest seeking someone better.
Rude
If you are just trying to pass calc 2 dont take this professor. If you want to not only learn the materiel, but be extremely good at it take calc 2 with him. He is a very harsh grader but also fair. Grading criteria is very clear. The lectures are extremely informative if you pay attention. Be prepared to work very hard and he will teach you a lot.
He gets off on giving bad grades, he grades tough and has no consideration for busy individuals . His class has to come first. Loves to be condescending. He takes pride in tough grading so stand by.
Look up the definition of superiority complex, and that pretty much describes him.
Absolutely one of the worst professors I've ever had. He makes it very clear how much he prides himself in having 42% fail rate, and he downplays other calc professors to state how much better he is at teaching than them. He's rude, and he purposely makes himself unavailable outside of class by teaching at 2 other schools. Resist taking this class.
Very time-consuming class, but I think learning Calc, in general, is time-consuming. Willing to put in the effort? This class isn't as bad as it seems. Block out ~3-5 hours a week I'd say. Maybe more if there's an exam coming up and you want an A. Also, his lectures have stories and stuff so it's less easy to get bored. SYNTAX matters! glhf
His lectures, in my opinion, were very helpful in learning the material. Besides this, however, I can't really recommend him. As a bunch of other people said, he is a very tough grader and can be incredibly snide, especially when you try and ask him questions/ emails. But if you pay attention and do the homework he assigns, you should be ok.
He is an excellent professor for people with strong math background. One of the best prof I've had; one con is that he grades extremely harsh.
Troughton teaches Calc II a notoriously difficult subject which can grant him the reputation of being a difficult professor. However he teaches a way that utilizes logic and understanding as opposed to memory. His personality keeps me awake during his class and u wont be shamed if you ask a genuine question and not one that he answered numerous times
If you did well in calc 1 and are good at algebra, then this class isn't too challenging. If not, either don't take this class or figure it out beforehand.
He's a very tough grader, has a very sarcastic way of presenting the material, and hates repeating himself. Some find that off-putting. Try not to take it too seriously. I personally found it entertaining. Great with one-on-one help. That 60% DWF is a clac2 stat- not necessarily his class. Pay attention and read the syllabus and you'll get thru it.
Troughton is a good teacher; his lessons are clear, well-written, and explained. He teaches at a good pace and I never really felt rushed. However, it is obviously a difficult class so it is very topic-heavy. He can come off as a little rude and unpredicting, either being annoyed or understanding with questions. Overall though, a good professor.
Academic difficulty alone is not a positive trait for a professor to have. Also enjoys watching students struggle in his class, believing that it's a testament to his own intelligence. He understands that college students are independent enough to not need to be disciplined academically, yet still humiliates them for his own enjoyment.
First, he is no help when answering questions, he will belittle you for not knowing the answer. Takes pride in making the course more difficult than it has to be. Reaching out by email is pointless (tells you to refer back to the lecture) His teaching method is I'll do it once and if you're not an expert too bad, he requires you to be a genius
Just to give a reference had an A in calc 1. Waste time by teaching like a math history course, if you want to major in math cool this guy is good for you, but for students trying to actually pass run. Over complicates numerous amount of things, if you don't do it the way he wants you to points are taken off. Cares more about the math than student
If you have the option to take anyone else, do it. Compared to every other Calc II professor he does the least for his students. He gives no practice exams to people and he has no quiz drops compared to all the other professors who do. You have 12 quizzes in total for the summer semester. Wants to do less. About half the class was gone aft exam 2.
He is a Very Good Professor explain very well. He always explain the easy example to teach us and always skip step. His Exam and Quiz are super difficult, is so much different from what he teach. If you can understand math very well then you should take his class. Grading: Homework are 10% Test are 54% Quiz are 18% Final Exam are 18%
Great at teaching/lecturing. Clearly irritated when students ask questions. Lots of quizzes and exams. You'll learn a lot, but don't take for easy grade. Funny jokes, too.
A great Professor, always has jokes that progress as the semester goes on. His lectures are always clear, always open to questions (be sure that you are actually listening to the lecture and going through the homework before asking). Took him twice, withdrew once due to my own negligence, when he says something, he means it and speaks truth.
If your mathematical abilities are more creatively than rigorously inclined, don't take this class; you will not get a good grade, no matter if you get nearly every question right, and no matter how good your underlying understanding of the subject matter is. When the robots take over, I'm sure they'll love Troughton; for humans, find someone else.
explains conepts well but cannot sit through his lectures. is a harsh grader
Biggest superiority complex I've seen in a professor, even prides himself on having the highest fail rate out of any calc II prof. in the school. Zero sympathy, was made to come in for an exam the day after a family member was put on life support after getting hit by a truck. Calc II is hard enough without him speaking down to his students.
This professor is insane, incredibly tough grader, tons to read, and I mean he expects you to read over 300 pages while doing the weekly homework's, and quizzes. The three projects are graded very tough, my class median is a 67 right now. The projects can take 10's of hours. Stay away whatever you do.
Probably the worst professor I have ever had. Grades tests and quizes based on how neat your work is, nearly impossible to get a perfect score. Lectures could be a replacement for sleeping pills. Try to avoid him if possible. The only advantage is if you are willing to commit 100% of your time and effort into the class, you may learn a few things.
Worst math professor or teacher I've ever had. First class of the semester he said he teaches at another college so he will not ever be available to meet outside of class. Gives crazy amounts of homework, and even told us to grab a copy of the homework due for the next class while we were in the middle of an exam. Overall avoid him if you can
Troughton's lectures are great and entertaining but provide little value to his moral of "teaching what is necessary". Provides little to no resources for studying and gives out exams that are notoriously more difficult than other professors in the department. Do not take unless you plan to live, breathe, and sleep on his class.
if you're unwilling to constantly study, do not take his class. quizzes every week and is a very tough grader, if you don't do the problems the way he wants you will get points taken off. there's a reason all the other calc professors are taken. not much many resources to study besides the problems he does in class
Yung Howard low key the GOAT. So quirky. So awesome. This class is literally just 3 colored sheets of paper. Practice exams are 1 to 1. Take him, ignore the sassy lads that say otherwise.
Incredibly tough grader, taking off a ton of points for very slight notation errors. He does not do much actual teaching, mostly just explaining a concept for maybe five minutes and then doing a ton of problems out pretty quickly by himself, not asking if anyone understands. I would not suggest him as a professor unless you like that style a lot.
This professor is extremely lecture heavy, and their zero in-class interaction throughout the whole semester. We covered up to 3 chapters a week in a little over than 2 hours of class time per week. Communication was very lacking, lots of surprise assessments and homeworks that are never discussed in class. Heavy work loads, not much support.
this teacher made my year feel terrible, he goes over multiple chapters a week, and uses useless software to try and teach certain chapters. He doesnt talk to students and expects you to know a chapter after 50 minutes of teaching. Definitely wouldn't recommend it as he doesn't support his students
Despite taking statistics twice in high school and receiving good grades both times, I seriously struggled with this course because I don't think my professor fully understood what he was teaching. I would not recommend taking this professor if you are new to stats or have taken it before.
Honestly a shame because his lectures were entertaining and effective and you get the sense that this guy cares about math. Unfortunately, he is the harshest and worst grader probably at the entire university and has little to no care about the success of his students going as far as being proud of his high fail rate. Would never take him again.
I never walked out of class confused, and there was a ton of practice material for tests/quizzes. He's the kind of professor you either love of hate, if you're up for putting in the hours required and want to learn, you're gonna do well. If you want an easy A, don't take him.
If you are good with Calc I, your algebra skills, do all the HW assignments, talk to him and participate in class, there is no reason to not take this likeable man. He is funny as hell!
Professor Troughton was tough, but fair. The homework allows you to repeat the questions until you get an A and each assignment had thorough critique about what you should have done differently which helped me ultimately get an A in the course. My advice: exams are open book, so use Excel to create calculators to save time during the exam.
Best math teacher I have ever had. His lectures are amazing, he makes difficult topics easy to understand. He is super picky about notation, but I have always been particular about notation as well because it helps me process things better. He's super funny and he's super passionate about math.
Professor Troughton was a great teacher, who explained concepts well while managing to sprinkle in a few jokes here and there to keep us entertained. Best math class I have ever taken. He is picky about notation, but this has been really helpful to keep my work organized, which will definitely be important for me going forward in engineering.
Can't be 1 min late to class. Gradescope hw's due before EVERY class, heavily graded too and must show ALL work. Multiple Pearson hw's due at end of week. The words "I expect everyone to spend 12 hrs a week studying" was funny coming from him while he's cramming us with hw. Weekly quizzes are heavily graded. Never get partial credit & good luck...
Although he is very particular with his grading, he does an excellent job explaining topics. I never once left a class confused on a topic. If you want an easy A, this professor may not be for you; however, if you want to actually learn the material, I highly recommend this professor.
This is a very hard class. Troughton teaches in a way that forces you to learn, which is why many people do not like him. I felt that I did learn a lot, but I had to put in the time and work for it. Calc 2 is a weeder class for a reason and many people will fail or withdraw from this class.
Aside from the normal Blackboard discussion board posts, this class isn't too bad. You can get through the class using only his notes and the homework to learn the concepts. He lets you use your notes and excel sheet during the exams, which was super helpful. He also gives some opportunities for potential extra credit. I would take him again!
Troughton makes sure you actually learn calculus. Likewise, his grading is somewhat unforgiving. In that sense, I would only recommend him to people who are willing to put in the work. Overall, he was a super funny guy and he genuinely cared about the material he taught. After taking his class, I have a rock-solid understanding of calc II concepts.
Extremely tough grader. If you take an online course for stats, be prepared for tough projects and discussions.
Someone said to me if you want to just pass Calc 2 take someone else...but, if want to actually learn and understand Calc 2 then take Troughton. He has great lectures and explains it very well. He's a tough grader. -takes off points for the slightest omission, even if you get the answer correct. That was my issue but it made me a better student.
He has a tough personality. Often gets pulled onto tangents that while interesting or funny, takes time away from coursework. Offers extra homework on top of online homework which gives extra credit to the exams, which is what saved my grade. Exams are tough, and latter half of the course is difficult
Extremely unforgiving grader. Will take points off for even the smallest notation mistakes. Lectures are very well explained however he goes at a fast pace. Offers optional homework to add to quiz average. However, grades them harshly and rarely gives more than 50% credit. Makes a hard class even harder to pass. Do not recommend him.
"Every student who flunks a test is a statement for me of the instructor and not about the student."-Neil deGrasse Tyson Howard starts his class saying "less than half of student pass my class" like is a trophy to have. It feel like he genuinely wants to give you an F for even trying to learn. (he's tenured to GL
Made sure that confused students understood what he was talking about in the lectures, so great for those who are attentive listeners and show up consistently. Outside of lectures he is very different, most feedback was very minimal and usually was "refer to notes" so if your notes aren't up to par you're outta luck. Harsh grader, Harsh but fair.
He is hard on grading on quizzes. Took a quiz on something you just learned day of. Gave me a zero on a whole question when multiplied something wrong (no calculators allowed). For someone I know had a medical emergency and reached out to make up a quiz, he refused and told him to suck it up and he can't make it up. I would not recommend.
This Professor can teach but he doesn't do it the way the rest of the math department does. He uses his own methods and makes his own ways of doing things which makes it very confusing. Even trying to get tutoring you can't. He goes on random tangents about anything and everything. Starts teaching new subjects before you are tested on old subjects.
Want to pass this class? DO EXTRA CREDIT HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS. They most-literally saved my grade. Troughton is a tough grader, I mean I forgot a dx and he took off points, but doing the extra credit homework assignments (there's 30) literally saved my grade. They not only taught me the material, allowing me to pass tests, but gave us bonus points.
it's all tough love. i recommend troughton if you want a strong foundation in calc. math is not my favorite and calc 2 is hard, therefore his class was difficult for me. i put in a lot of effort, crashed out a lot but i left the course understanding it. he's a harsh grader. there are opportunities to improve your grade, but you have to work for it.
His grading is unforgiving. You will almost never be confused in his class. The optional HW is added at the end but it WILL change your grade LETTERS. There will be 3 exams and a final. The Final will replace the lowest exam if it is better than the others. I had a D the last day to withdraw and finished with a B. His class is hard but passable.
Professor Troughton runs a tough, but fair class. The lectures can be dense, but the homework allows you to really learn the concepts. I found unstuck AI and Excel to be super helpful study tools. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding experience.
Prof. Troughton is probably a great mathematician but not the best at explaining super thoroughly. No official office hours, and he wasn't super helpful/welcoming when I had questions. Use tutoring or watch videos if you don't understand something. Do the optional homework and the final replaces your worst exam grade so that can be a huge boost.
He's a strict grader for sure, and there are times he teaches separately from the textbook (MML is used only for homework). Take his class if you actually want to know the material and do the optional homework for both calc practice and the extra credit, which can boost your quiz grade by letters.
This is genuinely the best math teacher I've ever had. His lectures are very engaging, he cracks jokes, and he explains the WHY, which is something very few teachers do. He will ask for pure memorization for a formula max two times in the semester. Other teachers will show you formulas and hope you internalize them. The daily HW is a lifesaver too.
Not nice….
Doesn't show general respect for students and speaks in a highly degrading/disrespectful manner. Harsh grader and wasn't helpful when I asked for clarification. Mean person, unapproachable, and not understanding of personal circumstances.
This class should not be called "Intro" to Statistics. It is a bit more difficult than that. You do get a warning that the course is hard and time consuming. There is no surprise there. The instructor is not sympathetic to your outside issues. He is also a tough grader. When it comes to the projects, there are no examples to go by. Best of luck.
Good lectures that's it though. Grades insanely harsh first exam, 69.5 class average, another section 96 average. Same thing for the rest of the exams, no formula sheet on exam 3, every other class section got it—grades on notation even with correct final answer. Geniunely craziest grader ive ever seen. "-1pt neatness" when it looks completely fine
He is one of the best math professors I've ever had. He is very well organized and straightforward about the material in class. While he can come off harsh at times, it's usually not for no reason. There's extra credit assignments due every class which are very beneficial to succeeding in the class.
Really tough grader. Takes off points for not using his methods to solve. No partial credit. Homework due every class. Brags that over 75% of his students fail. I took him because he was the only proffesor that fit my schedule - big mistake.
Look, he's fine. He's an absolutely amazing lecturer and he knows what he's talking about. He explains everything thoroughly, but is the most picky and strict grader ever and you won't find out what he mistakes he docks points for til he quizzes you. Not accessible outside of class. You need to attend lectures or you will not pass this class.
Hard grader but is very clear about it. Lectures are amazing, some of the best I've had at UML (which is more than I can say about most other profs here). Lots of work though, if there's a better prof in another section I'd try for that first, but if you're stuck with him then it's not the end of the world tbh.
Good luck to anyone taking him lol. He is so rude and rarely accessible outside of class. In class you are basically getting lectured or taking a test. Don't ask him questions that are not math problem related because he won't give you an answer. He also brags that a lot of people fail his class. Also screams and SWEARS at the class a lot!!!
Genuinely the worst professors in all of Calc II, brags that most students drop and fail, strict on notation and has no remorse what-soever if you have something come up. He tries to confuse you on exams and changes the order of what the exams on to confuse you. doesn't give study guides AND he also waits till last second to put a topic on exam.
He's a mixed bag. He explains the class well and teaches the content effectively. However, his snarky and rude attitude makes him insufferable to be around. His negative interactions hinder my ability to ask questions. He accused me cheating over a very rude email without even consulting me in class. I wouldn't take him again.
This professor is the hardest one of all the Calc 2 professors, but he's an incredible teacher. I never left class confused. The class consists of 1 weekly HW assignment, 3 weekly hw assignments worth extra credit, weekly quizzes, 3 tests, and a final. Take him if you are willing to put the effort in, expect a large time commitment
He will choose to give the simplest questions in class, tell us we are doing prerequisite subjects, and slip in something that's meant to be taught later in the semester.
One of the best Professors I have had contingent on you wanting to learn the subject. You basically need to do all the extra credit and study for a couple hours a week outside of class. Amazing lectures, but if you don't want to learn Calc it will be the worst experience you can have. very tough grader and has next to no sympathy for students
Troughton is a passionate and effective teacher. And that's about it. Although Calc 2 is a hard class, Howard Troughton's teaching makes you actually learn the content. If you want a nice teacher and a good grade choose someone else. If you want to learn and be miserable take Troughton. His demeanor makes it impossible to ask questions.
His lectures were good and he explained concepts pretty well, also gives out daily homework for extra credit, but very strict with grading on tests and quizzes, extremely rude attitude, his questions are far more complicated than other sections among other things. I don't recommend taking him under any circumstances even if he is your only choice
