I really like him. he keeps lecture interesting by throwing in interesting facts that relate chem to real life. he got kind of behind in lectures because of it though.
Horrible- couldn't pay attention to his rambling- ended up not going to lecture for last half of semester (my TA knew this, and said he didn't blame me). Lecture is a waste of time- spend half the time and just read over the book
Horrible!
i never went to lecture and i was just as well off. i thought he'd be interesting at first, but every time i went to class, he rambled on about something that didn't have anything to do with what we were supposed to learn. i learned everything from my TA.
He is a good professor
Very very bad teacher
He likes to make his tests have problems that are worth insane amounts of points. Balancing an equation is worth 10 pts and the problem then has about 25 more points that build on the balanced eq. Get the first wrong and you just got a low C on your tes
kind of a wacky guy, seems nice, but not the best teacher. rambles alot, i feel like the notes ive taken from class are kind of worthless. discussions are more helpful. dont feel like he prepares us for tests.
unclear
Had him for chem 103, 104, 343. Not a bad professor once you get to understand his teaching mechanisms. Thank god, I picked it up first semester.
A lot of complaints about rambling, none here! In fact, helpful when on O-chem, as he goes over it more than once. He's the only reason I got through Ochem and with an AB (not typical for me!).
Funny guy, highly recommend- can use notes on tests!
awesome
I disagree with most of these ratings. If you just pay attention and take notes, he's a very intelligent and clear professor. He does ramble, but about interesting and funny anecdotes.
he's a funny guy and lectures are so entertaining! thankfully you can use notes/book on the exams though because he doesn't really prepare you for them.
Unconventional but funny and interesting. Once you get used to his style you will do well. Not easy but not hard
Talks about crack alot - lecture interesting. Tests wouldn't be so bad unless you didn't have the problem with getting screwed over one problem being worth insane amt of pts. And he was a dick when I came into his office to talk to him. Bleh.
Hillarious, but lectures are pointless. Exams are unbelievably easy and open book. I only put in 30 min. for each one and got an A. I would recommend, unless you really want to learn a lot about chem.
not that difficult because of easy tests, i would avoid if i was a younger student, i never went to lecture just read the book
Very easy with open book tests. If you need to know chemstry for you major, DON'T TAKE HIM!
Dry sense of humor helps students stay engaged during lecture. Very clear and reasonable.
Awesome guy, has the best anecdotes about other famous chemists. Easy tests too
HILARIOUS. One time his fly was down the entire lecture! Fun prof and has easy open book/note tests. The easiest A I've ever had in chemistry.
The worst teacher I have had at the UW. Do everything you can to avoid taking his class, as you learn virtually nothing, and even though the class is easy, it's easy for everyone and that ultimately screws you over for a grade at the end.
I'm in his O-chem class now, he goes slower then the rest of the o-chem profs. Definatly like him, funny sense of humor that'll keep you interested. The only grades are exams which are very fair in toughness and time needed to take them. Great guy, willing to help, definatly would take him again!
Open book tests; VERY easy tests; you don't learn much from him, but if you get a good TA (like I did) you learn tons from the class that helps with future chem classes... He's also hilarious! Gotta love his big bucket of colored chalk!
Do not take this professor. He is AWFUL. He is SO unclear in his lectures. I went in for help, and he pretty much called my stupid right to my face. Made me feel incredibly dumb. Very rude to me. Tests are hard because he doesn't teach. He does curve though, a 50% was a C. Avoid this class!
Very easy class if you pay attention in lecture and keep up with the problems in the book. If you do this you'll probably only need to study for only 2-3 hours the night before his exams. First 2 exams are rediculously easy, but the last two get a bit tougher (recommend making flash cards of rxns)
Whitlock keeps you interested the entire semester with jokes and funny comments, and did a pretty good job teaching the material. but its a hard course and no matter what professor it is, o chem is still really hard
Funny lectures. Keeps things interesting. Tests are open book and open note. Can bring anything you want except a phone or computer.
After having Shreiner first semester, the transition to Whitlock has been horrible. His lectures have no coherence. I recommend taking any other professor if possible if you are interested in getting anything out of Chem. 104. Even though his tests are open book, you have no idea what to expect.
He is such a large, old, cynical man. It's either you love him or you hate him. He takes a real relaxed approach at lecturing, almost as if he's bored. You have to rely more on discussions to completely understand concepts. Open book, open note tests. Kinda hard quizes. His humor keeps you intersted
I got lost a lot during lecture because he jumps around so much and you never no what he is talking about. Discussions really help, but the tests are somewhat difficult because you never know what will be on them. Don't let the open book and notes fool you. This is not an easy professor!
Lectures are honestly ridiculous. Make sure to go to discussions though they are helpful. Tests are all open notebook and book so they aren't too bad.
One of the most frustrating classes I have taken this year. Discussions are where all the learning happens. Tests are nothing like discussions, and wording is tricky. Open book/note tests may sound nice, but they aren't at all. I would definitely recommend another prof.
Lectures are incredibly boring except for the momentary jokes. He's pretty quirky, which makes him a really funny character, and that's how I managed to tolerate the lectures. Open note test are not too tough, but you still gotta study for them. He's pretty helpful too.
Whoever said this guy is easy is nuts. Although exams are open book study like hell if you want to live. Previous exams are very helpful. Little to no partial credit given on exams so BEWARE!
He is THE WORST teacher in UW Madison no questions asked. Just look at the comments other people left him. Don't be fooled by the open book lure. I was a 3.8 student until I took ****ing Whitlock. There's even a commitee created to fire Whitlock. Trust me, don't take him and you can thank me later.
Lecture is entertaining but pretty much useless. You must learn everything by yourself. The open note tests are moderate in difficulty, but the time limit is restricting. I also heard he puts all the quizes (not open book) and labs on a curve, which sucks if you aren't the smartest in your class.
I'm not really sure what to think of this class. Tests are easy if you can decipher the questions well. Despite the fact that I knew my stuff, I still had a hard time b/c tests are just worded so badly.
STUPID! DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF! He won't teach you anything. If you get a crappy TA (like I did) you really won't learn anything. Even though tests are open book, there is hardly any partial credit.
The Worst professor ever..enough said
I absolutely abhorred this man. He is cynical, and thinks everyone is cheating their way through college. He rambles more about the history of chemistry than the actual stuff he tests you about. Just don't go to his lectures if you have him, and read the book to teach yourself-you might survive.
worst chem prof in the university. when i stopped going to lecture i finally got an A on a midterm, so you are better off staying away from his pointless lectures. ABSOLUTELY NO PARTIAL CREDIT is given in his exams. i wanted to discuss my grade with him at the end of the semester so we scheduled a meeting and the **** didnt even show up.

I agree, open book tests sound nice, but there are only a few problems on the tests, and no partial credit on most of them. This class seems like it should be so easy, which adds to the frustration. I didn't learn anything and probably didn't get as good of a grade as I would have in another class. If you can, take a different professor.
Just kinda sucks. Dont look for help from this teachers. Goes off on tangents OFTEN.
I took a test i thought i was prepaired for but obisaly i was not becasue even though i did good on the pratice quizes and problems i still got the shaft...if you can take some one else
This class is going great. He does a great job of teaching the material.
First test was really easy but the second one kicked everybody's ass. Somebody had a panic attack durring it and many people left the test crying. His lectures are pretty interesting and hes kinda funny but that one test was a major ****.
I dont know what everyone else was talking about. If you keep up on your stuff, this class is a breeze. He's funny and he makes the class fun.
He is a great guy. I think if you get a good TA that actually shows up for class everything is fine. He kind of has a strange personality. You deffinately should sit in the front he will actually ask you if think he should start class.
if you can take someone else, do your self a favor and do that
this guy should not be a teacher. he can be funny, but comes off as completely unmotivated and sometimes a bit arrogant. lecture blows. do yourself a big favor and take Treichel instead.
I thought he was really funny in lecture. but beyond that, his lectures were total crap. he didn't seem to ever talk about anything relevant to the tests. so i basically stopped going to the lectures and relied on my TA.
jerk, arrogant, hates his job, doesn't care about concerned students, won't hardly shake your hand and look you in the eye, thinks everybody cheats, tests are confusing enough to make you think you never saw it before. I was fooled into taking him for being funny. He doens't remain amusing for long.

Lectures SUCKED...basically he just mumbles through stuff and is completely unorganized. If it wasn't for reading the book or my helpful TA I wouldn't be doing well in the class. Tests aren't too bad. There are quizzes every week that help a lot because they are written by the TA's. I'd try to take someone else but the class isn't that bad for me.
Pray for a good TA to get you through this class. You won't learn a thing in lecture, that's a promise.
Kinda a goofy old man. Sometimes is very helpfull with things, sometimes he just rambles. Exams are harder then you'd think, but are open book.
lectures are horrible, dont bother going. just get the lecture notes onlie, they are much more helpful than the actual lecture since the TAs write them. try to get Jose Laboy as your TA.. he's awsome and will teach you everything you need to know to ace the exams.
i learned everything i needed to know by going to lecture. very effective, on target. brilliant old man. those who say lectures are pointless aren't the ones getting hundreds on his exams.
Rambles off topic alot ... will not give out practice exam keys so you don't even have anything to compare your answers to, the ones getting the high scores are those that are going into the TA office constantly and getting the answers from them ...
I personally did not find his class hard. If you study for the exams how can you not do well on them? All you have to do is look up the questions you're unsure about. And he kinda sounds like Sean Connery!

Lectures were pointless, the TA, book & practice exams taught everything I needed to know, don't be afraid to go to the old man for help.
I want to know for all the people that are slamming him, did you guys think that lecture was going to teach you everything? How did you guys study? Did you guys do example problems like he tells you to? Lecture isn't meant to teach you everything. Open book means HARD!! Come one people. You go to Madison. I thought smart people go here.
terrible lecturer, he is monotone and thinks hes funny but hes not, just read the book, he give open book exams, not recommended
Awful, just awful. I thought this would be easy since the test are open book and I heard he was funny but taking this class was awful! He is a mean old man and the lectures are pointless. I have not been able to stay awake for one of them. Get a good TA and and don't rely on partial credit becuase there is none.
i loved whitlock! he has a strange sense of humor, but he's like a cute old grampa kind of guy.
Basically Whitlock runs an extremely easy class with lectures full of rambling. He's funny and you do learn some things, but honestly you could skip half of the lectures. Just make sure to go to discussion, which is where I learned almost everything. Tests are extremely easy to get A's on unless you make small mistakes .
His lectures are slightly unorganized, but all tests are openbook. Overall an easy course; if you do/understand the practice exams before the test you'll be fine. He's actually kind of funny, sometimes morbidly so.
He's OK. I ended up liking his lectures because he's entertaining, but they're still a little hard to follow. His exams are super tricky, even though you get the previous years' exams to study from. Even the multiple choice are worth 10pts so if you get one wrong you're screwed! Barely ever partial credit, and he definitely throws some curveballs.

lectures are a good time. if you can fit in your busy day, attendance is recommended. He is quick to correct errors during lecture, and gives every opportunity to succeed. Online notes and past exams, and an open notes policy make the exams as difficult as you want them to be. Sometimes he throws in tricky questions but they are pretty transparent
he doesn't do reviews, which could be helpful.
He's a crazy guy, and in lecture he is not very easy to follow. I either learned from my TA or the book. He has open book, open notes exams which he counters with unclear questions. I love chemistry so the material was a breeze for me, but I ended up with a B thanks to his tricky exams.
The no partial credit thing is ****. I find it funny that I did better in his wife's O.Chem than his Gen Chem. I hear he's retiring soon. Hopefully its true.
i thought he was nice and jolly but then i went in to his office hours to talk about his TA's missing 30 pts on my exams from adding errors and he refused to listen to me and was extremely rude. his exams have multiple choice questions worth 10% of your grade so its not graded fairly at all and no partial credit is given. i would stay away.
Lectures aren't very helpful. He goes off in tangents a LOT. Make sure you have a good TA, because although his lectures are entertaining due to his sense of humor (which can only be described as morbid), i honestly don't think i learned much if anything from him. No required homework, and easy exams between previous exams and open notes/book.
I would avoid him if you can, he is funny at times, but he gives no partial credit whatsoever, i messed up on the first exam and will not be able to recover
best chem professor ever. who else tells you how to make crack?
Very good professor but pray to get a good TA to clear up some of what he says in discussion. online practice exams make real exams easy. ALL EXAMS ARE OPEN NOTE/BOOK/ANYTHING!
Come on people.. How can he make it any easier?! You get to use ANYTHING you want on the tests!
Rambles on and on about useless information like how to make cocaine. Is very monotone, sometimes tells interesting stories that last about 20 min but after 3 of those 20 min they lose their interest. Open book tests are pretty easy if you do the practice exams but he does not give partial credit so a small mistake can lower you a letter grade.
Refuses to discuss grades. Acts really mean at office hours and I've heard several people say that they almost cryed.
After the first two lectures, his sense of humor just gets to you.In three words- bitter old man. Comes to class all scruffy like he just got out of bed, and proceeds to lecture about synthesis of various drugs. Funny at first until you realize nothing he talks about in lecture is actually worth a rip. Lectures are overall pointless-open book helps
Hardest grader ever! Gives partial credit but it is worthless. ie 7 points off for a small addition error on a 10 point problem.
There's no easier way to get an A on campus. People have been posting about his "morbid" sense of humor. Not at all. He has many interesting stories to relate to the topics hes teaching. Exams are open everything AND way easier than other 104 profs. After seeing other exams I wouldn't take anyone else.
the way to do well is study extremely hard and triple check your exam answers cause he takes off alot of point for little things. posts lecture notes online so dont need to go to lecture but be sure you have a good TA cause that is the only place you will learn anything. do the problems from the book and online, helped alot.
Very rude man. I went to his office hours once and he basically scolded me for not knowing something and then spent half an hour teaching me about fractions as if I was a 3rd grader. The class is very math based though so if you like math it's pretty simple. Test are open book which would make you think they're hard, but not really.
Not all that clear in Lecture and not overly helpful. Doesn't assign homework or tell you which problems in the book to work. No Partial credit on Exams, but they are open note/book and he doesn't test anything he hasn't gone over in lecture. Easy class if you srudy what was in lecture.
It's not a hard class: open book exams, no HW, quiz once a week. But he's not a nice person at all. Don't bother trying to discuss grades, he doesn't listen. If you go to his office hours to try and get points, he'll just lecture you about trivial things. Overall, if you study and have a decent TA, you'll be fine.
What a terrible, terrible man. The tests may be open book, but he gives no partial credit. Only if you have a good TA will you do well - if you have a horrible one like I did, be prepared to be majorly screwed over in this class.
Whitlock is a horrible, confused old man who has no business teaching chemistry. I got an A, and I think the biggest reason was because I stopped attending lecture after the first midterm.
Terrible teacher. I spent the majority of lectures drooling on my notebook. He goes on useless tangents that dont relate to anything we are covering. If you get Jose Laboy for your TA, the class isnt that bad. Otherwise, do not take his class.
Whitlock is the epitome of an old man set in his ways. I got an A on all of the exams, labs, and quizzes but because he "normalizes" all of the sections and I apparently had an easy TA, I wound up with a B. Don't go to his office hours, try to become his friend, or start to believe that this man has a heart because you will be disappointed.
Ridiculously awful. Just say no to Whitlock.
Your test grades have to carry your grade in this class. The normalization of tests and quizzes hurts almost everyone. Read the book, dont go to lecture, prepare for quizzes, and create a cheat sheet of all the important ideas for the open note test. Bring in old, filled out tests during your test. Most TAs are helpful. Whitlock is worthless.
Whitlock is absolutely ridiculous. He's a pretty awful professor, honestly and isn't really even that comprehensive (not covering titration in the acid/base unit? Come on), but his pessimistic rants are often hilarious. Take Whitlock if you want an easy A, not if you want to understand chemistry. Tests are open note and not too hard if you study.
Go to class and pay attention. Goes over problems on exams.
Whitlock is awesome once you figure out how to approach his class. First, DO read the book thoroughly and do lots of practice problems. GO to EVERY discussion, and get help from your TA. Do all of his previous exams. If you do that, you can enjoy his hilarious/pointless lectures. His class is like 80% exams, but his exams are open book/notes.
Whitlock is a horrible professor. His lectures made no sense most of the time and he went on tangents. His test may be open book and note but do not rely on your book because his tests are difficult! Do not go to his office hours he refuses to talk about your grade and makes you feel dumb. He is rude and if you're emotional you will cry. TAs help!
Absolutely terrible. I got an A on 2 of the 3 midterms, a B on the other, did well in discussion and lab but still wound up with a B. The normalization of discussions screwed me completely and I was completely turned off by his teaching style (which is based off of tangents). Try to avoid him if possible.
I had him for organic chem 343 in fall 1975. Loved it (was pre-med; got into med school). There were 5 exams; if you got an A on the first 4, then you got an A for the class and skipped #5, the final. I screwed up the second exam (actually missed a whole page!), so took the final. Exams were hard but fair; can't say anything bad about him.
