Purvis has a dry sense of humor. He's fun. I got an A and skipped a LOT!!!!
I love Purvis! I wish he taught all of my classes.. and I agree.. he is too cute
Great teacher/1of my faves/take him at some point. I am taking him next sem too
Requires assigned seating for roll purposes, but this class is generally easy. Funny guy!
Extremely knowledgeable. Easy to work with. Media & the Government is another good class he teaches-easy upper level elective. One of the best teachers @ U of A!!

The best teacher I have ever had. His experiences and travel make for a very interseting class with a whole lot of knowledge and great views about international relations.
He knows a lot of info., but he is a very slow and boring lecturer. His class is EXTREMELY easy, possibly the easiest I've had. I didn't learn much, but I got an A with half-assed effort
Media, Politics, and GOv. Honors Colloquim. Lots of writing...textbook is Purvis's own book. Challenging, but rewarding. meets this semester for 3 hrs once a week...bring a coke.
He's really funny...bit of a smart ass, though. His class is moderately interesting, but the assignments are a little lame. He typically doesn't keep you for the entire 3 hours, though. =)
I loved Purvis, but if you aren't really interested in the subject of his classes, drop the class or don't take it. You'll only struggle. Esp. in Media and Society.
Impossible! Tests are all in a blue book and you can never finish them. Know everything for tests and he counts attendance. Very Difficult!
He is a brilliant and friendly man, but his class will be really tough if you aren't interested in the material. Tests are difficult, but he discusses all the information he tests over in his lecture. One of the best at the U of A!
Easy A course, but his lectures are very dull and he is hard to understand. I skipped plenty.
media and society was a horribly boring class. the tests were so easy, partly b/c they are the same each year and i had a stack of em. he takes attendance, but bring a pillow for a nap..you'll be fine!
A little dry at first, but actually a funny guy. He's a great person and his class is not a blow off but its not that hard either.
This class is not only boring, but there is alot of busy work. The tests are kinda hard, and he is soo boring.
He is a really nice person with interesting material to teach about his class has just the right amount of difficulty to not be a blow off class but not to be impossibly hard.He really knows his stuff too.
Too many papers, bogs down... Feels like busy work. Test has quotes that it is weird he expects you to know who said it. He doesn't emphasize a lot of small details he puts on the test. I think this class is a waste. It's long and he likes it, but he still doesn't make it too interesting.
great teacher. covers all material in lecters that are on the test. very funny and sweet person.
I think he's a great guy and he's got a great sense of humor. He even sang Elvis songs to our class! It was great. The tests arent terrible..just take notes and read some stuff. The optional assignments kinda suck, but they are definitely manageable if you dont procrastinate.
He's a really nice guy who obviously knows his stuff. This class, however, is just memorizing lots and lots and lots of little details. The course title is misleading. It's not really media and society but the history of the media and all of the conglomerates that own modern companies. Not too hard.
Prof. Purvis is a very intelligent, nice man. His lectures get dull at times, but the material is rather interesting. This class is a rather easy "A" if you take most of the notes and do the choice assignments. You can afford to skip/sleep some, but not a lot. He takes attendance, for the record
Great introductory class. I learned a lot. He was a bit boring at times, but overall a great professor.
Mr. Purvis is not the most animated and interesting guy in the world, but overall, I enjoyed the class. If you really listen to what he has to say--it is fairly interesting. He is a nice guy and even though the tests require a good amount of studying, they're not too hard. I learned a lot.
Purvis has a very subtle sense of humor and doesn't take class too seriously. He is a real cool guy to talk to, huge sports fan. Grades very easy, takes attendance, which is weird for a class of about 150 or more.
Very knowledgable, very laid-back. I thought the material was very interesting, just be sure to take coffee with you.
I love this man, he definitely has his moments but he is boring as hell to listen to. The class was extremely easy, most of the reports were chiefly summary. Bring something to do in class, because he takes attendence.
very easy to understand, tests are also easy
This class was very easy. Had friends in it before who kept their tests, and studying off of those was identical to the tests I took. Very easy. He's very thorough in what he wants you to know for tests. Boring however. Did crosswords everyday.
He is the greatest teahcer alive. To see him walk in with a pink shirt and baby blue tie on was always a treat. The man knows his stuff and is hilarious, especially his randition of "Heartbreak Hotel." Jesus would be proud.
This class isn't very hard, but it's realllly boring. He'll tell you what will be on the tests, so they aren't hard. The papers are long, but he grades them fairly. He'll tell a ton of stories about where he's been and what's he's done, and most are pretty interesting...Take Purivs for IR.
I LOVED Mr. Purvis! He's a great teacher and the closer to the end of the semester, the more funny he got! He definately kept my attention!
BORING! I was always very unclear about what to study. There were surprises on the test and I always got lost in his lectures. Sometimes he could be very entertaining, but others I was pretty much asleep.
he's boring. bust out some hangman or a crossword to keep you awake and take his class anyway. you'll learn something.
Purvis can be dry at times, but very insightful and intelligent. This classs should be mandatory because you will learn so much about IR. Tests aren't too bad if you study what he says, and grades exams fairly. Very fair class, learned alot.
His class was a little dry, just because of his monotonous voice. But what he was actually saying was very interesting and insightful. He really knows his stuff. He is a very nice guy who wants you to get an A. The class or 2 before each test he would tell you exactly what would be on the test, and there were not too many notes.
The coolest prof. on the planet. Extremely brilliant and has a dry sense of humor. Very interesting.
Hoyt is an extremely intelligent guy and a relatively easy grader. However, he is dismissal of his male students and one who should have been forced into retirement several years ago for his transgressions. The stories of gender bias and "follow-through" almost give ex-professor mark corey a run for his money.
Hoyt is awesome. He has a dry sense of humor, but he tries to be funny. He knows what he's talking about and he's very helpful. He is probably my favorite teacher!
Tests are in-depth but easy if you study because he gives great test reviews! Class can be boring because of his monotone voice, but he does all he can to help his students pass the class. Good about responding quickly to emails if you have any questions. Go to class because he checks attendance every day, and it counts toward the final grade.
Hoyt is awesome. He's intelligent and although his class is very dry and quite boring because he talks with a monotone voice, its easy. If you study for at least a few hours the day before the test you'll be good to go. His tests are very cut and dry and you know exactly what will be on them. He's a cute little old man with a dry sense of humor!
Hmmmm, Purvis. Greatness in every sense. God I love that man.
HOYT PURVIS IS THE BEST! If you are a Journalism major chances are you will have him. And boy, are you lucky! If you ever have a chance to take one of his classes - do so! Just make sure you attend all of the classes though. That'll make the tests a lot easier, well go figure. But seriously. He talks about things that aren't in either book.
Purvis is one of the best teachers at the U of A! Many say that he is boring because he has a monotone voice but that is just because they dont appreciate his intelligence or dry sense of humor. Media & Society exams are easy, but his upper level exams are a lot more in depth and kind of hard. His classes arent hard but they require a lot of work!
Nicest man ever. Kind of monotone so it is easy to fall asleep but what he actually says is pretty interesting. I recommend taking every class he teaches.
He reminds me of my grandpa. He tells a lot of stories and he's a really good teacher but the class is ridiculously boring. So easy to fall asleep to. And it's so easy, you can sleep in this class and still get an A just study the terms and know a little bit about what is going on in the world and you'll get an A.
I LOVE HOYT PURVIS!!!!!!!!!
Purvis is a great teacher. Lots of real world experience and stories. He's hilarious if you have a dry sense of humor. He does take roll, so go to class. Take notes because his tests are directly from his lectures. I barely used the book in this class, only for what he told us to.
Hoyt Purvis is a great teacher! not only is he a cute old man but he really helps you understand exactly what is going to be on the test and what is needed for the assignments. It does tend to get a tad dull at times, but overall it is a great class!
Very sweet and kind old man. He knows the subject, and he teaches it well. Just go to class and take notes, and you will be fine on the exams. He is good about telling you what to study for your exams. You have to do a few homework assignments in the class, but they are relatively easy.
He's so sweet and extremely helpful. He has had many life experiences and really knows his stuff! I look forward to taking more classes with him.
Purvis is amazing. I love this guy. His dry humor makes me crack up every time. This guy has worked with or known may major political figures in his lifetime (as the press secretary for Sen. Fulbright), and his anecdotes about his experiences really bring the class to life. If you come to class and just listen to what he says, you'll do fine.
Hoyt Purvis is awesome! Take him if you can! The tests are mostly fill in the blank, ID's, short answer, ect. Definitely study your notes for the tests, or you will not do well at all. He's very cool to and his anecdotes definitely bring an interesting vibe to the class.
He's nice.. really funny. You won't like him at first, but I love him
Hoyt is amazing! Take him every change you get. He's also very helpful if you go to his office!
Not a good teacher. Very boring. Nit-picks exams and includes lots of useless trivia on them. Don't take him if you can help it. Are you paying thousands of dollars to get "nice guys" who have impressive resumes but no teaching skills, or quality instructors? If you answered the former don't take Purvis. I did and I want my money back.
Useless class... useless teacher... Boring. Has lots of experience, but doesn't know the facts (I (a history major) called him out on fallacious information). He had been teaching it that way for years. Don't take him.
He is a real nice guy and he has some really interesting stories. But he is boring and he only lectures so you have to kind of guess whats on the test. But other than that its not that hard. He drank with Johnny Cash!!
HOYT RULES! He's old school and takes attendance everyday, but he still has a lot of interesting things to say. If your a Journalism major, a class with Purvis is a rite of passage.
Awesome teacher, learned a lot. He is great! Write down everthing he says, random fun trivia will be on the exams, sometimes for extra credit.
Purvis is a good professor, he's kinda boring but the information is relative if you are a journalism major/minor. His test are kinda hard, but study the notes and attend class, he takes attendance, and you'll do fine!
Hoyt is the best! He has a dry sense of humor and sometimes and ramble but it is worth it. I recommend any class he teaches! Hoyt is also genuinely interested in helping his students and is a fair grader.
Very nice guy with a lot of interesting stories and insight to international relations. Class is in a dark, windowless room and can be very, very boring, but the class is easy if you study. Take Purvis's class if you have the chance. You will learn quite a lot.
I've never had to study so hard for a 2000 level class. His grading is horrible! If you answer his questions correctly, but don't tell him extra information he wanted, but didn't ask, you'll get counted off. His essay topics are extremely broad, and if you try to narrow it down, he counts off. He wants a dissertation in a 5 page paper.
Super easy A! He takes attendance but it kept me going to class which I ended up appriciating. His project are fun, like writing papers over super bowl commercials or the grammies and creating a blog. 4 projects of your choice, a quiz, and 2 tests.
Ask him about Elvis and Johnny Cash! He'll also sing for you!
Purvis is by far the best teacher I have ever had. He is funny and interesting and he really knows what he is talking about. He is kind of monotone which takes some getting used to but once you do it is well worth it. I recommend him for every class!
This is a great teacher! He's an adorable old man, always happy and has actually had a super interesting life. I highllyyy recommend him you'll love him!
Purvis is an extremely talented professor and knows more about his subject than any other professor I've ever met. He is really funny and his stories and experiences will blow you away. The actual lectures can get pretty boring, and the tests have a lot of specific information on them, so take as many notes as you can!!
Take him, just go to class, take notes and do the assignments. Great teacher
Dr. Purvis is the MOST interesting man you will ever meet. He has so many experiences and he shares them, if they are related to the class. I recommend taking any class from him ,just maybe not a 3 hour one day a week class. He can be a little dry, but he knows SO MUCH!
My roommate tried to talk me out of taking Hoyt. I thought that "He's the most boring person I have ever met, period" was a bit of an exaggeration. Well, the class was easy. The A is virtually guaranteed if you put forth minimal effort. But my roommate was not mistaken in the slightest.
Purvis is very interesting. His lectures can be somewhat dry, but only because of the material covered. He has had an amazing life and will tell you stories as the class goes on. He is a great guy, and is a rite of passage for Journalism at the UofA
The lectures are extremely dry, his voice is monotone and it practically puts you to sleep. Don't worry though just find someone who already took the class and get their notes! It will help a lot because he doesn't really do reviews. Its a required class for Journalism majors so just suck it up you'll get through it.
Professor purvis is absolutely adorable. His lectures may make you a little sleepy at times, but he is very knowledgable. His experience and wisdom definitely shows in his lectures as he uses many stories as support. The work load for this class is very manageable and the test are not hard. A lot of vocab, so use flashcards to study.
Purvis is amazing, if a bit dry. One of the funniest professors you'll ever have, if you're smart enough to get his humor and references. Go to class, take the notes, write the papers, this class is that simple.
He's knowledgable but extremely monotone. you will not like this class if you enjoy a relatively fast, even-paced class that stays on topic. Typical class will have many tangents about his life and experience (which can be interesting but totally irrelevant). doesnt register course on BB. go to class, take notes, that's what'll be on the test.
Professor Purvis is a very intelligent and knows the industry very well. He is very helpful and does take attendance. Take all the notes, go to class and you will make an A! (i think this class is very entertaining as well).
Mr. Purvis is a really nice guy and he will try to help you succeed. He doesn't use Blackboard so make sure you take notes because you won't be able to see the PowerPoints again once class is over. If you make an effort this class is an easy class.
Hoyt Purvis is the most uninteresting interesting man in the world. It is hard to stay focused sometimes, but he has a lot of knowledge to share and wandering for a single minute means you miss out on a great story. The class is really easy and doesn't have a lot of work for it either.
A great, fun teacher
I LOVED Hoyt's class. It is one of the easiest I have ever taken, but also the most interesting!! He is so knowledgeable and has great stories to tell. Just actually pay attention, even when it gets a little dry. He's vague about how much attendance counts, but if you don't show up to class, I think he definitely deducts points at the end.
Make sure you go to class and do ALL of the homework assignments, no matter how dumb they seem because they're worth 40% of your grade. 4 assignments only.
His lectures are really boring but he is an interesting guy for sure! You only have four assignments, a quiz, a midterm, and the final. He takes attendance every class so make sure you go. His tests are mainly all fill in the blank and short answer. So make sure to take good notes because you'll need them to study.
DO THE CHOICE ASSIGNMENTS 40% of WHOLE GRADE. Lectures cover EXACTLY what is on exam. DO NOT MISS THE REVIEW DAYS. He basically gives you every exam answer. SO BORING but he adds some subtle humor. Nice guy overall but he DOES NOT USE BLACKBOARD! So you have to keep up with your own grade. RARELY responds to your emails so GO TO CLASS to pass.

Prof Purvis is a really neat guy. He has some really awesome stories, and he's funny in a subtle way - but his lectures can be boring. As long as you do every assignment WELL (don't just blow if off) you should be fine. And you do have to study, but he tells you exactly what will be on the test. Con: he doesn't use BlackBoard which is annoying.
Love Mr Purvis! He has the best stories, and makes class very interesting as long as you pay attention. Don't buy the book--I barely used it. Test material comes straight from slides and class lecture.
Mr. Purvis' classes were super boring, but he also teaches you a lot of cool facts! His tests aren't multiple choice so you have to study. Attendance is taken everyday and he makes it a little unclear that it counts for 100 points out of your grade so factor that in! He doesn't use blackboard either so it kind of leaves you anxious.
Dr. Purvis is an excellent professor, though his lectures get dry sometimes. He does not use blackboard, so waiting for grades can get a bit nerve-wracking. He does not specify what his grading criteria are when it comes to assignments. He does take attendance into account calculating overall grade, so don't skip! Dont buy textbook; you wont use it
The lectures are hard to get through, the material can be boring sometimes and Prof. Purvis has a pretty monotone voice. However, you have to take notes on the Powerpoint because he doesn't post it online. His tests require you to memorize the material, they are word-for-word from the lecture. Do the choice assignments and prepare for tests.
