Professor Powell's classes are best suited for those seeking a challenge

This man's one cool guy for critical thinking.. makes you actually think in his class. Really enjoyed his class it was the other students that made it seem worse.
If you like teachers going off on tangents then you will like this guy. He has a tendency to let his voice drop off in volume so its hard to pay attention, but he is very nice and will help you if you ak him. Very picky essay grader, but you only have 4.
from taking this class, i came to the conclusion that mr. powell is a very intelligent person, but does not have a very stable and clear way of teaching his 1D class. he tended to sidetrack and ramble on with stories. i do not recommend this class.
I liked this guy. He does tend to go off on tangets, but there is nothing wrong with that ;) Pretty easy class - as long as you have decent writing skills you will have no problem getting an A.
its a critical thinking class but on essays, he focuses and grades more on mla and grammar than the actual information you put in. in his summer class you write less essays than in regular semesters.
If you want to learn something in English don't take this class. He doesn't really teach anything new. It is a pretty easy class, and he doesn't give hard hw. He makes you do 4 papers total.
Absolutely the most unprepared teacher I have ever had. Goes off on tangents on a daily basis. If he likes you and you do good MLA - you have it made - take all his classes!! His Mythology class is an easy A!!
What is WITH this man? Ramble ramble! Attendance takes up half the class! He grades on your grammer and format! What about the content? Takes a month to grade paper! Would never recommend for English 1D. The only grades he gives on papers is C Dor F. He's knowledgable but that's it.
Worst teahcer you could have for this class. In my class he has only given D's C's and B's. And he has to like you in order for you to get a B. I agreed with him mostly the first of the semester and I got a B on my first paper after I started to challenge his opinions he gave me C's. DO NOT TAKE HIM
Though his lectures were often boring, he taught a lot of basic things that were somehow skipped in my lower levels of english.This helped me a lot. His class wasn't that hard and I got a B not because I was liked by him, but because I wrote B work. That is all you have to do to pass this class.
this guy is a smart man but,doesn't know how to teach worth a damn. IF YOU have good writing skills than you should do fine. You get four essays that are make up your grade for the semster. He tends to grade on MLA and grammer and goes off talking about his life. At times it seemed that he was talking to a pysch. He is boreing. sucks ass!!
DON'T DO IT!! He was one of the most boring teachers I have ever had. The homework was easy but the test are ridiculous! He mumbles and you can harldy understand much less hear him most of the time.
I got a B in the class and NEVER participated. So he isn't as bad as everyone says. He is, however, VERY BORING and left for the restroom a lot. Most of what he lectures on is how he grades his papers. So long as you keep to the subject on the papers, you'll be OK. His fianl was easy. Watched two videos and analyzed it.
This guy was boring as hell. I loved the subject but he made it so boring I thought I would fall asleep. The best part of the whole semester was when we had to get in a circle and talk about something. He sat on one of the desks and fell on the ground, legs all up in the air like a cockroach. It was hilarious.
Alright so he doesnt always stay on topic. He mumbles and makes you doubt yourself sometimes. On the other hand I got an A for barely trying. He was very helpful if you called him about the papers or tests. The final was watching a video that he felt was fun. Overall he is a good guy. Classes are boring buteasy A if you do your work.
1d is a course about format, but your content in this mans class could be that of sesame street and you'd be scholar labeled. He is an awfully nice man, but an awful teacher

He is extremely nice, but his lectures were just about the most boring and content-less I have ever had to endure. He graded papers harshly after hardly even giving us any direction. Still, I managed to improve my papers and get an A!
Knows his stuff, but class was boring with questions like "what is truth?", but when he talked about his life he kind of reminded me of Cosby, he is a good teacher but you better like critical writing

holy **** we just got back our 1st essay i worked my ass off on that**** and i still only got a D+ this guy is a tough ass grader and he puts u to sleep all he does is sit there readin right outta da book
Boring. He has a nice personality but I wouldn't recommend this class. It's quite useless. All you do is read the book and show up to class for nothing. It's a waste of time. Unorganized also. Exams are hard. =(
Toughest grader i think i have ever had, some papers you think are good can be Ds or Cs. So boring, gets up and goes to the bathroom every class period, so you can just leave which is nice. Assingments are simple but the essays are what make or break your grade. Dont take him, please.
although this teacher is very boring his assignments and papers are very easy. The key to passing this class with a respectable grade is to simply go. His lecture may be boring, but as long as you do your assignments your chances of passing are very easy.
Very unclear and a very hard grader. Classes are soo boring and he rambells on for every. He reminds me of Mr. Rogers but obviously different skin color...
wow.. thats all i have to say. If you think you have met the most boring person in the world than you havent taken this class. He is monotone. He grades harder than any teacher in teaching history. To give you an idea who your dealing with... he studies the new additions of the MLA formatiing books and finds the differences with each addition
If words are your game and you want a challenging professor, Mr. Powell is greatly recommended. He will grade your essays with a comb! Great teacher but often goes of the subject being dicuss in class. I did not learn any new information in this class then what I have already known from English 1A. I recommend him!
The class was a little difficult, but his tests were very easy. The essays required a lot of research which was done near the last week of semmester. He is a good teacher, but repeats himself and relies on the class to contribute to create a productive discussion. He was always available after class, which was a plus for some, but some just used it
I took this class in Spring 2004. He gets easy distracted from the subject matter and babbles on about his life, which can only maintain your interest for so long. I got an A in his class, but his grading scale doesn't make sense ( the highest grade you can get is a 94% on essays?!). He's a nice guy, but I don't recommend taking English from him.
oh gosh i almost went crazy in that class! this teacher is so boring and his class is way too hard. when we have discussions he always changes the subject and blabes onto something else about his personal life! anyways he grades extremely hard; i worked my butt off this paper and i thought i would pass atleast a B. and he gave me a D+.

This guy is what you think of when you think of nerdy english professors. If you have low tolerance for boring english classes look elsewhere.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. I used to like English. Extremely anal. Can't manage his time - which is a disrespect to his students. Takes months to get an assignment back. Can't answer a straight question. And tangents are his best friends.
He is that worst combination of teacher: boring in the classroom and a tough grader.
Took him a few semesters back. One of the worst teachers that I've previously encountered. Highly unorganized, boring, and just plain annoying. Who teaches mythology and mixes up Ares and Hermes? But I do give him credit for the final. All we did was watch an extremely old movie called "The Vikings," with Tony Curtis and Curt Douglas...
Goes on too many tangents making any point he is trying to get across to the class hard to understand.On the papers, I actually did better when I wasn't really sure what I was talking about and just bs'd it. Got a D in the class. If you love teachers who go on non-sensical tangents take Powell. If not take someone else.
Very nice guy, but also very boring! The class was easy, I got away with reading only half the material. You do have to turn in the essays to pass (there was two) and follow the APA format exactly because he's very big on these.
Mr. Powell is not very helpful at all and he never explaines any thing. Do not take his class. You will be very upset with your self.
this guy talks about the same thing every day and likes to talk about himself and then forgets what he was talking about.I have always gotten A's on essays and in his class i got a C and a D so far, just because you dont know what he wants! dont take him, youll be sorry!
Mr. Powell is very boring. He speak with a quite and monotone voice. He grades difficult and gets off tangent always! Nearly, everyone failed and no one recieved an A. Mr. Powell can't explain your questions and makes learning not fun. I don't recommend him!

i had him twice. the second time was NOT by choice. he took over my eng1B class this summer '07 bc my original teacher got sick. he's worse than when i took him 3semesters ago. he makes me want to hate poetry. he never gives people straight answers if we ask him questions. he's nice but he needs to either retire or be fired.

He is very very very hard and picky.He expects very higher level english and grades hardly. But if you are really good at analysing and grammer punctiations you will be fine. I got an A in Summer with him. His class is interesting but he does not want to look at the essay for correction, thats why people do bad, he is a nice person.

He's a very nice guy, & a good teacher, tends to drift off of subject, but thats what made his class so entertaining. He's a hard grader on essays, I've gotten a C+ on two of the four i've written, and i've always been a good writer. He expects the best from you, which is why i like him even though i've only done satisfactiory work in his class.

Do not bother taking this teacher. He is awful. He digresses so often during class and teaches so little. This is the worst teacher I have ever had! He doesn't even answer questions. He also grades quite harshly and unfairly. He does not give out A's very often. Not one for my class, as far as final grades go.
He is a touch grader who is PREPARING us for life. His class takes a lot of time and effort which many students don't want to invest. He is very KNOWLEDGEABLE and helped me improve my writing skills. But he takes a while to return work. I also had him for Eng 79. I only RECOMMEND him to students who want to be CHALLENGED and plan on TRANSFERRING!
Don't take this class!!! He wastes A LOT of time in class and at the end of class, wishes it was longer! literally starts teaching towards the end of class! blabblers on and on about things that r not important and tells the same stories over and over! i would not recommend this teacher!
Very hard to get a decent grade in this class. I do not recommend taking his class unless you have no other options, and if that is the case I would first recommend waiting until the next semester...rambles a lot about everything and takes too long to give papers back. He uses all the books that are required during each class period.

Mr. Powell grades his papers strictly. Positive comments will result in a "B" at best. An "A" is unattainable with his grading objectivity. He strays off topic frequently and you walk away from class feeling like you wasted your time.
Do not take this professor. He means well, and he seems like a nice guy, but he can't teach worth anything. He strays off subjects very easily, and his lectures never seem relevant. There's only 4 essays and a final, and he gave us back our 2nd essay AFTER the drop date - jerk! He also struggles reading simple sentences. Don't risk your grade!!

Mr. Powell seems like a very nice guy to talk with, on a personal basis. However, if you not enjoy listening about Biology, where he attended school,and the way he mumble/talks to himself, or anything else NOT pertaining to English and how to become a Critical Thinker, please listen to these comments! They might save your grade and your mind!
I would not recommend this teacher. He digresses way too much. I couldn't tell you what I've actually learned. He spends the first 10-20 minutes of every class fiddling with the desks, muttering to himself and chatting with students. He assumes we understand exactly what he wants in every paper we write. He is "disappointed when it's not correct.
This is the worst teacher I have ever had in all of my schooling. I learned nothing. He never talks about how to write the essays he juust expects us to know. When you correct him on a term he tries to make you sound dumb. When you ask him for help he doesn't answer any of the questions asked. He didn't even tell us what our final would be.

WORST class in my life!Took class back in '02 I still remember how aweful it was! I never went to class b/c all he talked about was his wife, dogs and muttered to himself all the time! Mr Powell is a great teacher who has strong passion for teaching and discipline,however he is at times very demanding of a students participation in the class because he will always ask u to participate in discussions and lectures, but he is one of the best that Delta has to offer .Lastly, take this class because it will help you get to the top!
Mr. Powell is actually a great instructor.People can actually learn if you pay atenttion in class!! lol Yes, he gives us a lot of homework, any yes he lectures and wishes there was more time, but he is a dedicated instructor in english. I have enjoyed his class and students should take this class.
OMG!!! Do not take this teacher. I took him for summer 10 not only was he a horrible teacher but you learn absolutely NOTHING!!! I am a great writer and just barely passed with a C and have been an A student since high school.
I had a hard time understanding a thesis and thesis statement. I had to work hard but after taking his class I can write college level papers with confidence. Excellent class if you want to learn.

He is the definition on hopeless! He give lots of in class essays. He talks in a monotone voice so it's super easy to fall asleep! He just a dumb teacher... What ever you do not take him.
well ill simply share this story... on the first papper he told us it would be undocumented and to not worry about MLA style... when he handed them back he said everyones grade suffered because we didnt use MLA style after he explicitly said not to.... need i say more?
Professor Powell has a passion for English. I've learned a whole lot from being in his class. If you expect to do well at a university his course will definitely prep you for it. Homework only takes 15-20 minutes, really easy. If you're looking for just a passing grade and not learning anything at all, think about taking a different teacher.
As a person, I really like Powell. We had some pretty interesting conversations after class. However he is unclear, rambles about unrelated subjects, contradicts himself frequently, and has a terrible memory. I learned nothing and grew increasingly frustrated with his unhelpfulness. I wouldn't suggest him.

The worst instructor I had in my life. he has some kind of dyslexia or incapacity at reading. He uses outside help to grade the essays (the writing on the reviewed papers is different than his) and this second instructor knows nothing about what Mr. Powell teaches or not teaches in class. Do not take his class!!!!

Worst professor I have ever taken! He rambles on about nothing in the entire class session and he is very unorganized. He randomly assigns homework assignments when he feels like it. He does not care if you are in a club or sport he will assign as much homework as he wants and grades very hard on the essays. I would stay away from his class!

He's a nice guy, but I don't recommend taking him. He doesn't take into account if your sick and you can't email him because he never reads his emails. The class went from 20+ students to 9 students within 2 weeks and a majority of the students transferred classes. Grades VERY harshly and don't expect to take much notes that are remotely relevant.
He is easily the worst instructor I've ever had. On our final essay, my initial grade was a 75%... However, he whited-out the grade and changed it to a 30%. I asked him why and said I didn't write a good paper. If that's the case, then why the heck was my initial grade a solid c??????? Terrible professor. Don't ever take his class.
Through 5 semesters at Delta i have a 3.96 GPA and im a pre-med major. My one B came from Mr. Powell. He is very unclear, vague and hard to talk to. Would not recommend his course unless you love english and want a challenge.
Nice Professor,but gets off topic easily, drags class, eye opener at times, expects students to step up their game as a college student, reviews literature from K-12, he's passionate about English, he's a bit unorganized, and forgetful but his class is doable for at least an average grade if you past the mastery. Hes good but tough at grading.

The class has no excitement and he carries A and B convos with certain students, leaving the rest of the class to just sit there (waste 30 minutes of my life every class meeting). Half the time (or should I say most)he talks about stuff irrelevant to what we are going over. He's repetitive and unorganized.
WORST PROFESSOR EVER. The class is sooooooooooooo boring and he speaks soo low, and doesn't make any sense... My 3rd week with him and I HAD to drop the class.
