Although I don't hate him.. can't say I'd take his course again. Can be unclear
Awesome guy; Very funny with awesome notes.
caring teacher
No Comments
This guy is auesome
he is hard to understand. but he give you a checklist of things you need to know for the exam. then the exams are essentially straight out of the notes. not bad prof for a brutal course.
Nice guy. Good to talk to in his office hours for extra help. The course was better then expected
Dr. Taube is the greatest, tallest German man ever!
he's bad......
I think he really means well, he is just a very bad teacher!
A nice guy, tries his best to get everyone to understand. If you go to his office and ask for help, he'll explain the concept better to the entire class the next day.
He is a funny guy. He always tries to make sure the whole class understands a concept, and makes organic really fun!!!
Huey is a cool, funny prof who seems to know what he is doing. He just confuses me more with his models tho...
Good teacher
Good teacher, but his final was fricken impossible.
The final was hard, but that was to be expected. 161 is made to be difficult. Other than that, his notes were very organized and his lectures were well structured. Had a nice sense of humor, too. Just tended to be behind in the course material, though.
He's alrite!...final is not very tough, but need a lot of memorizin' & studyin'...
just 2 tell u that his final is not as hard as Blackburn's...some of his questions even come from the same question as midterm, quiz, practice exams & even homework, too...
He does have very creative ways of teaching. Wearing the periodic table shirt was definitely interesting. His notes are clear and very understandable. However when you get to the test, you might ask yourself, where did he come up with this?
At least his tests r very similar, or even some questions quote from the practice exams, slightly easier than Dr.Dennis Hall...but indeed his lecture notes r not clear...
Super nice guy, though his tests are generally really freakin hard! Laugh through the practise exam, cry through the final. But generally he's TAUBERRIFIC!! (wink wink for all you 9K returners!)
Exams exactly like practice exams. Significantly easier, more helpful, and more clear than other organic professors. Really nice and helpful if you talk to him. brush up on rxn products right b4 exam
Dr Taube is definitely a smart man, but he just doesn't convey ideas very well. He has a habit of talking just for the sake of talking and/or making up words and it can get a little confusing at times. He is very entertaining and friendly though.
nice, smart guy, GO TO CLASS, his notes off net are useless unless u are there, so ya notes are bad, has trouble w/few words withdrawling sounds like destroying and that can mess u up bad =[, seems to overload you at end of year w/notes
Wonderful professor! I found his notes very thorough and clear, has a great sense of humor and is able to make a class enjoyable, considering the subject matter. Exams are fair and he explains concepts well.
this is for sure a class you have to work to keep up in, but that's mainly because of the content. He's a really enjoyable prof and very helpful. Also I note no one has made mention of his flask yet
He's an okay professor. When I had him the notes were all overhead, which were useless because you couldn't understand his writing and it was frustrating to write notes and listen at the same time.
if u dont get somethin thenask and he'll sure answer u clearly! his exams are fair and can't blame it on him if u do bad. GO 2 CLASS and do UR SAMPLE EXAM!very nice prof and friendly, never gets tired of students taking his lunch time to get help, funny 2
Take his class! he even helps with lab reports if u ask,he even does experiements right in class. very sweet and likes to share his most preciose things with students such as SKY!u gotta take his class to know what I mean ;)
Hubert is the best prof I've ever had in my life. HT Chemistry was awesome in the morning and his exams are straighforward, study and it's an easy A+. He writes poems for the class and blows things up! Best prof ever!
Excellent prof. His desire and passion to teach shines through every class. Exams are not that difficult if you know the stuff. One class (before halloween), he started throwing candy at us and then pulled out a Corona and chugged! Taube is definetley reccomended as most FY profs lack integrity.
One of the rare profs who cares about his students and enjoys helping and talking with them. It is a tough course and if you're not in class you will get lost but he is straight forward so there is not tricks come exam time. you know it or dont. Best prof I've had.
Very nice and funny prof. Like others said, he's always there to help students. The only problem I had was that he often explained things with the impression that we already knew about what he was talking about. His explanations also lacked depth and you really needed the textbook for clarification.
He clearly likes teaching, and enjoys the subject matter, but he does assume that we know what he's talking about. Goes really quickly, but there is a lot of subject matter. The Textbook helps clarify. Know your stereochemistry!
Best prof this semester, he's awesome and has fair test (study for them and u can do well easily)
he really loved teaching and was always very helpful and approachable, but the material was covered really quickly and it was really hard keeping up. the notes are online but you really have to go to the class to actually understand anything. and even then...
worst class ever......soooo boring, definitely don't take it on Tuesday or Thursday.
I dreeeeeaaded taking organic chem...Chem's never been my thing but with this guy I all of the sudden really like it. He has a very cute sense of humour, lots of practice online, and his tests are really fair. He obviously knows what he's talking about and actually teaches it....no reading directly off powerpoint slides for him! Yay!!
He's such an awesome prof. He clearly knows his stuff and is loves teaching. Prof Taube makes Chem 161 easier to understand with his demonstrations and examples (sometimes hilarious demos). He's just all around great.
He is extreemly helpful and fair, also makes classes interesting by exploding ballons and throwing candy (Halloween).
his notes are clear and concise. and he is always willing to answer questions. and his exams are fair. he also makes organic chem interesting. overall he is the best prof i had so far.
Great prof. Made the class interesting and he is quite the funny guy. Must attend classes to understand his notes but teaches it very well. Tests are very fair, not too hard or easy. Obviously loves to teach and actually makes organic chem. worthwhile to learn.
bad teacher, his notes don't make sense at all. he goes really fast, and doens't explain anything in detail. i taught myself the whole thing by reading the text book.
HE IS FUNNY??? u gotta be kidding me! he's so boring! just that one day for halloween he kinda dressed up... but the rest of time he bores you to death!
Awesome proff, able to go to for extra help if needed.
"Ugu" was an awesome prof. Organic chem can be hell, but his helpfulness made this ugly class bearable. Funny: Candy tossing, balloon exploding, Jager-drinking, he has it all! Goes through notes fast, and assumes you know what he's talking about when you don't, but completely willing to clarify at all times. Average midterm, LONG but fair final.
I don't care what this guy is teaching; take the class. He's funny and obviously enjoys what he's teaching, and you won't find a better prof. The class isn't easy, but he gives you a lot of ways to learn the material; applicable homework, practice questions, and practice exams. And if you do the homework, you just might get a $20....
Org Chem was a terrible class. Taube did an okay job teaching the class as I hardly understood his english and he goes through the material really fast assuming that we know what he is talking about. The final was fair though. Molecule kits are really helpful, be sure to use them!
Taube is a great prof, its a little rough to get around his accent and the slurring of english, but once you can understand his speach it all makes a lot of sense, i bombed the final and the midterm but i still like the guy, its not his fault there are dumb people in organic chem, he does try to help though. Also... he likes his beer, take him out.
Very nice guy, a little bit of a rough accent but if you're inclined to learn, then you'll get passed his english. When he was teaching us the reactions in the last few weeks of the semester, he went really fast cause we were a little behind, so pay attention...and try not to sleep in the lectures. They really help for the exams.
Do the sample midterm, because the same concepts will show up on the tests. The final was pretty hard and stressed the last few weeks in class (a bit too much?).
Amazing prof offers many different ways to learn and memorize!
Awesome proff, after a while you don;t notice the accent. Really helpful ouside of class and a great guy overall.
Very boring.

Poor Notes, overall a horrible prof. If you want to pass chem 101, don't take him.
Taube is incredible! He's very straightforward, his tests are fair, and he's hilarious if you're actually listening to what he says. People complain about his accent, but it's nothing that you won't get used to after a week. Highly recommended!
Terrible Prof, Horrible Notes
Speaks in a unclear and monotone voice. Very hard to understand. His notes are basically chicken scratch and useless. Horrible Prof.

This prof is the hardest man to understand at the University of Alberta. Not only are the lectures a slur of german.. but the notes are chicken scratch. Sorry Dr. Taube, stick to research.

I almost feel bad for saying it, but Taube sucks as a prof. Great guy, makes me laugh, he's super cute (in a old grandpa sorta way), but completely useless for teaching the material. Highly UNrecommended.
I didn't mind Chem coming out of high school, but Taube just made my tue/thur mornings HELL. His deep, monotone german voice was a good sleep aid, and his fragmented class notes were of no use. I guess he's a good guy, but when it comes to teaching.. he should not be. AVOID THIS PROF.. and Taube, PLEASE quit teaching, or get better at it fast.
Dr. Hubert Taulbe well destroy you. If he wants you to fail you will fail! He plays be his own rules! This guy had a very rich german acsent that was difficult to understand. I hated chem after taking it from him, he mad no sense, and his notes were garbage. I read the text to understand things. Don't take Chem from this guy.

Wow, what a bunch of whiners, he's not a bad guy, he cares how students do, he'll invite you out for a brewsky if you come for help, he's got a thick accent, but its affect wears off, better than the other 10 thick asian accents that teach the courses. Funny guy, will try his best to make the exams "fair", deffinately deserved the SALUTE award.
I was suprised to read some of the last reviews, because I thought Taube was great. The first couple of days I had him I was worried I wouldn't understand his accent, but actually within a week I had no problems at all. His notes were great. I have him again this semester for Chem 263, I think he'll be much better than my last O-chem prof.
Taube isn't a bad prof, but I think there are better ones out there. He is basically just a mediocre prof. in all aspects; tests are okay, notes okay, explanations are just okay, accent isn't too bad to get a hold of. If you have no idea who to take for ochem, he won't let you down, but try for others first.
Taube has the worst notes ever! They are all in point form..that makes no sense whatsoever unless you already know the material..dont take chem 101 with him.Thi I heard he's not bad for the other chem classes.. :S(doubt that)
I enjoyed his class a lot, and his lectures are very easy to understand! He's a great prof and highly recommended to everyone who takes chemistry! I kinda regret not taking his lecture this term ... and oh! he's a very funny guy!
I can recommend this guy. Online notes, fair tests, doesn't make the course overly hard. Won't blow you out of the water, but if you just want to get Ochem over with hes the right guy.
He seems to be an incredibly nice person, but I did not enjoy his class. I've always liked chemistry, but it was a morning class and he was so monotone that I couldn't possibly stay awake for an entire lecture. His accent isn't so horrible, but it means you have to pay pretty close attention to understand, making it even easier to nod off.
Taube= Terrible. End of story.
He was a likeable prof. You can do fine in this course if you USE the textbook and only use his notes as an extra reference. Chem 101 was hard but with this prof it was not a negative experience.
It's not his test that are hard, it's the lectures... it's really hard to pay attention in a big class because he is quite monotone. the accent isnt too hard to get a hang of though. It's great that he has online notes, but there are so many abbreviations it's impossible to follow. Buy the textbook and follow religiously. good sense of humor!
Accent hard to follow, monotone voice makes class hard to stay awake. Could stay home and print off notes and studying text and get more out of the course. Nice guy with good sense of humour, but not the most enlightening prof.
Great prof! His lectures were interesting and he kept it interesting with little side jokes, the occasional video and lots of demos. Very friendly and helpful when you ask questions. Exams were easy if you read the textbook and the notes. I would recommend going to class and make sure you pay attention to the demos because they are often on exams!
I got through this course by reading the textbook. His notes really aren't great, but he is pretty helpful. He has seminars before exams and has lots of resources on his website. He is a pretty nice guy, but not a great teacher.
He is a very nice, helpful prof. His lectures tend to be boring and dry. But all you need to do is study his notes and you will do fine. I found all his questions came directly from the notes and were VERY similiar to ones in the handouts and practice tests he gave.
This guys hilarious. He may not be the most interesting lecturer but it's fun to listen to his accent. Notes where not the best but it was his practice test that are golden for the real things. He post his old tests on the web and they are the same thing you're gonna get on the mt and final just with slight diff elements, #'s etc.Take his class.
Dr. Taube isn't a bad prof... but he's not a great one either. Class is pretty monotonous, just reads over his notes that he's posted for you. It is a good idea to do his practice quiz and MT's.. takes questions off of these, but he changes that up for the final. Not a bad guy... just an average prof.
What a great prof!! His notes were neat & detailed, you can pretty much just study from them and ace the exams. Finals and midterms were fair, no trick questions & he won't test you on anything that was not covered in class. He does have a slight accent, but within a couple of classes you don't even notice it.
He has wonderful notes that don't make you use the textbook.exams were easy, and he is always willing to help. The only problem is that he is a bit boring. In general, he is a great instructor.
Good Prof! His notes are what you need, very neat and well organized! He has lots of demo and models in the class. His quizes and tests are quite similar to his sample!
HUBE!!!! MARRRY ME. I love this man. His notes were awesome, i personnally hate chem and I pulled off a B+. do his practice exams twice and your gaurenteed a good mark. awesome guy. fully.
A great prof, he explained things in a way which made it easy to understand- hardly touched the text book except for when i missed lectures. The quiz and midterm are pretty simple and fair, make sure to look at the old exams, concepts are very much related.
He was such a nice prof and genuinely cared about the students. If you ever need a concept cleared up he is more than willing to help after class. Although it seems like he didn't go into as much detail as other professors his exams were based on his notes so no worries. DO his practice exams they are almost identical to the real one. Exams were re
His lectures are boring, and his accent doesnt help. However, his notes and problem sets are excellent. Read his notes and do his h.w. and you should ace the EASY exams. He also marks very generously. Honestly there is no reason not to get A in this course. Lots of material to learn though so dont leave everything for last day. Easy prof overall.
I loved the course content(ochem 164), but I hated the class! Though Taube is a very nice guy- funny and approachable, he is a TERRIBLE lecturer. His notes are VERY abbreviated/point form so its hard to learn from them, and he does little but read them off and mumble. As a result I basically had to teach myself the entirety of chem 164. :(
His posted notes are vague but not much is added to them in class so the text can come in handy. Nice guy, but not the easiest to understand sometimes.
ONE OF THE BEST! His accent really scared me the first day but after that, it disapeared! VERY helpful and his exams..oh my goodness do the homework and practice tests cause they are almost the EXACT same! Exam was brutal but that was mainly cause I left a lot to study for the night before. He loves to help and he def. deserved his salute award.
He is so cute! Loved his class. Midterm was really easy, but the final was brutal. He spent forever going over easy review concepts at the beginning of the semester and ran through the more difficult/new stuff at the end. I would suggest studying for the final well in advance.
One of my favorite profs! Very interactive in class and helpful outside of class. His notes are very brief so at times textbook is needed but his exams are very fair. The midterm was a breeze but the final was quite hard! Overall, I loved his class and he made o-chem bearable for me!
Awesome prof, loved him all the way through. Definitely recommend him. Midterm and quizzes were easy. However, he really rushed to cover rxn mechanisms near the end of the semester and then gave a brutal final exam.
Fairly comprehensive in the demonstration of class material (rushed some but there was a lot to cover). A little hard to understand due to his accent, and the darkened classroom with overhead projections made it easy to be sleepy... but overall a good prof. A very entertaining guy. :)
Decent prof, he knows what he is talking about, but his very thick German accent makes this class very hard to understand.
His notes are sometimes not very descriptive so you should refer back to the textbook for clarify. Make sure you READ his notes. I just wrote a final yesterday and most of the answers came directly from the notes and I didn't know the answers! SO READ THEM! Overall he's not a bad prof.
Taube is a really good prof. Know his notes by heart and you'll be fine. Pretty funny and a really nice guy, always willing to help. Has a review session before the midterm and finals to ask questions at.
his accent was not a problem for me, but he is not an interesting lecturer at all. harder than my other ochem prof, you have to understand the problem sets AND notes AND textbook problems. his notes were summarized SO MUCH that they just didnt make sense anymore! helpful in office hours.
I don't recommend him at all. He has an accent, and to make it even worse he stares at the floor and mumbles to himself in a very quiet voice. His notes and examples are very simple and he shows you how to do problems but does not explain why, so when you are given a different harder problem it is impossible to do. His tests are very hard.
Good prof with great notes. What a departure from some of the other science profs at the UofA.
He's a good prof. His expressions are funny at times. He provides great notes. Look at his notes first before you go to the textbook. I did the vis versa and it took me longer to understand stuff. He is very helpful if you do not understand something.
Dr. Taube is a fantastic professor. Take him if you can. Super helpful and fun loving guy. Sure if the class does badly he gets upset but this is simply due to his love. He loves teaching, he is awesome! Make sure you take his class.
I liked him. He is the kind of prof that you would except to get at university.
lol before i thought chem was "my" subject but i guess i overestimated it. He totally made me go wow. I've never seen such a non specific prof ever on my life. His midterms and finals are usually duplicates of his old exams. PS. Textbook is a must.
Taube is awesome. Sure he gets upset sometimes, but only at people that come to class and talk and then fail the exam. Shut up or don't come. If you follow this, you'll do great. Memorize the practice questions and you'll ace exams. Oh, he's hilarious too, but you only get the jokes if you're listening. He's great, I highly recommend him :)
He can be fairly boring, but he's a really good guy. His accent it's a problem at all. Every once and a while he can be really funny. Beware, in a big class he sometimes throws things into the seats. :)
Prof Taube isnt horrible, but I really dont think I learned anything from him. His notes are so abbreviated that you pretty much have to teach yourself.
Very hard to understand him. Mumbles to himself at times but you get used to it later in the semester. The textbook will be your bible in this class since his notes are almost too summarized. Don't get me wrong he's the most awesome guy there is, but as a professor he's marginal at best.
Taube is a great professor.. I've always appreciated his comic relief throughout the semester! His midterms are faily straightforward and he's always willing to lend a helping hand. I would take his class again :)
Nice guy, but really really should consider retiring. He's getting over the hump, mumbles to himself, and his lectures aren't the best compared to say...Apleblatt. Often put me and all my friends to asleep, every single one of them. However, he is a nice guy outside of the lecture, his only saving grace.
Good guy, not so good at teaching. Notes are way way too summarized, the only way to learn the course is to understand it in lab or from the textbook. Extremely helpful in office hours. Comic relief, but it seems like he confuses himself sometimes and mumbles. Sit near the front, his voice and accent are muffled in the sound system. Notes online :)
He is probably one of the nicest and most entertaining profs, however it is the actual teaching of the class he lacks. He mumbles to himself, his notes are summarized way too much, and i learned that its better to just write your own. Exams are fair if you know your chem. Honestly, try to get a different prof but if you cant, READ THE TEXTBOOK!
Most Awesome prof i have ever had - after you get used to the mumbling. Always be listening carefully. I used to hate chem and although the class was super hard taube made it fun and super interesting.
Unfortunately this prof had me lost the entire semester. He's a nice guy and very funny but his notes are not very clear and neither are his lectures. Ended up using another prof's notes to subsidize. Would try to help you if you asked but was easily frustrated
I actually liked how his lecture notes were so summarized; it clears out the excessive information and focuses on what's actually important. If you need more information you can always use the textbook. Tests were difficult but I feel like the actual course is just quite challenging. I didn't have problem with understanding his accent either.
Once you get back the thick accent, he's very clear and engaging. His notes are well-organized, and make the nightmare of organic chemistry seem palatable.
My friends and I were so lost all semester! He is so hard to understand and his German accent does not help at all! He mumbles frequently. He also likes to avoid students who have their hands up for a question. The tests were way harder than the other chem prof's tests! His class was extremely boring! I am good at chem & I found his class difficult
I haven't felt so raped in my life for chem...i had my expectations up for this class in the beginning but taube just made me frown for the entire semester. I've never been so lost in my life, his explanations are so out of the blue it's impossible at time. Textbook is the main life saver in this course, be sure to dig in.
Has a thick accent, and a boring voice. Really easy to get sidetracked in his class, in which case chem help and the textbook are helpful. I found this course difficult, final exam is written, so you have to know your stuff. Labs are fun but are hard, especially the lab quizzes.
He mumbles a lot, sometimes hard to understand, VERY boring. Hes funny sometimes. His exams were pretty tough, especialyy the final. The lab portion probably saved me
Caring, funny and kind prof... just difficult to understand his explanations. Attend lectures, read the textbook and pay attention otherwise you'll probably feel lost. Tries hard to make it interesting like demoing with limes and toonies!! Tries to make the dry stuff interesting =P
Very easy to get side-tracked in his class due to his strong accent. He thinks his notes are awesome- but they are not. BUY THE TEXT and know it! Exams aren't all too difficult if you know his notes and the text inside out. I wouldn't recommend him.
Okay prof, pretty funny guy. Never used the textbook, he only tests stuff from his notes which he posts online. Hard to understand through the mic and his thick accent. Midterms were pretty easy. If you memorize all the reactions at the end of the course, the final is a breeze. Overall, decent prof.
Trying to listen to him and understand him was extremely difficult because of the mic and his accent. Sample quiz online was exactly the quiz given in class. He was very nice and funny, kindof like a German Santa, only he did not bring me a good mark in chem for Christmas.
Hey was hillarious, hard to understand some times, and mumbles, but he related well to his audience.
He's a funny guy and tries to make the lectures interesting... his notes and explanations aren't clear at all. You can't understand him and it's very hard to pay attention USE THE TEXTBOOK! It will SAVE you, and read over his notes afterwards. The midterm was fairly easy just like the sample midterm. The final however, was BRUTAL. KNOW YOUR STUFF.
He's a great prof who actually cares about his students. The midterm and quiz were easy but the final was more on the tough side. I recommend looking at his notes before using the textbook. I'd take a class with him again.
read the textbook before class because his notes are terrible, but if you've already read of the material they help to clear things up. His tests are somewhat difficult but fair. He mumbles to himself sometimes but he's funny. He also gives a free review session before the midterm and final which are awesome. I'd reccomend him.
If you enjoy your sanity, DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. He explains nothing, is impossible to understand. I had to teach myself everything with the textbook, only referring to his notes. This course ending up being so much harder than it should have been. Worst prof ever, thank god for the curve; class averages were low 50's
I'm pretty conflicted about Dr. Taube. His notes are really good, nice and clear and concise, and generally he explains concepts clearly. I bit awkward sometimes and mumbly, but it is slightly entertaining. He got angry a few times about chatty students and bad attendance, so he clearly cares about his class.
I found Taube to be a great prof, his help sessions were absolutely amazing and he was very helpful when answering questions. Ask after class, he has no class time to answer. Do HIS HOMEWORK online. His exams are identical to the homework he posts! Very easy if you dedicate yourself.
He looks like a zombie, and don't take his class at 8 oclock because it WILL be so hard to wake up and go to his class. READ TEXTBOOKS and DO PRACTICE EXAMS HE POSTS ONLINE.
This man is useless. His lectures are so boring (especially at 8am). He is SUPER hard to understand and just does not explain anything clearly. His practice exams are identical to his test though. This man is bologna. Don't do it to yourself. 1/3 of our class showed up every day- he counted. DO NOT DO IT TO YOURSELF!
I did not mind his class, although it was at 8am. His notes are pretty summarized but in a way where everything made sense to me after readin the text. Do his practise problems and his sample midterms and quiz. They are very helpful.
I never went to class and did really well. His notes are AMAZING. And everything is online, including pre/post lecture notes. You don't need to use the textbook whatsoever. He is a pretty cool guy, but his 8am lectures are brutal to make it to. His tests are exactly like the practice midterm/quiz.
Prof's true interest in teaching this subject, and making sure the students know it, is apparent. That is accompanied by his frustration with poor attendance, poor grades (hmmm...any correlation?). Provided 2 evening seminars per week, extra and unpaid, to try and reach out. How's that for true interest? Others already commented on tests/notes.
Taube is a fantastic prof. Anyone who says otherwise probably did not apply themselves. His exams are like the homework he posts - so make sure you do them! He offered seminars biweekly for people who had trouble. He cares about his class, and is more than willing to help if you have questions. It never hurts to read the textbook either. Great guy.
Really? This professor isn't all that bad, I actually did pretty good. I didn't attend his classes sometimes, because it always started at 8am. The exams are not hard at all, you just need to study his notes and you'll do fine. I didn't use the textbook at all, it's actually not worth buying. He does have an accent, but I understood him after 10 mi
Nice guy and truly cares about the art of teaching (and chemistry). I felt bad that no one came after a while because it clearly frustrated him. But he did explain very well, tests were easy, and he did help a lot outside of class.
Not a good prof AT ALL! You can't understand him! He spent more time disciplining the class than actually teaching and because of this we fell behind and then to catch up he had to move super fast...it was terrible! I had to learn electron config. from youtube! His notes are way too brief. Do the practice problems! He also gives hard exams! STUDY!!
Funny prof and explains things extremely well. It's obvious he's very well-learned about the mechanics of organic chemistry. Notes are very organized and also very clear.
good prof-not the clearest to while lecturing, but answers your questions well.added bonus that he breaks up class with jokes-usually at the expense of a little dignity on his part.knows his stuff
Basically, the man puts his notes up online for you, you print them out, come to class, and then he reads them out for 120 minutes. I stopped going to his class after about 2 or 3 weeks and study from the text book. There is literally no incentive to attend his class.
Good prof. Organized notes and keeps himself available for help and gives lots of practice questions and practice exams. Sometimes hard to understand due to his accent (but honestly you have to get used to that in uni anyway). Funny and I enjoyed the class. Knows his stuff.
Super Tough tests. Short answer are very vague, difficult to tell what answer is desired. very difficult to understand, uses overhead but stands in the way of screen
He's a good prof. If you actually pay attention in class and do his homework, his class isn't too hard. He even holds review sessions; so if you don't do well, it's probably because you didn't try hard enough. Helps that he tries to make class more interesting with jokes and drawings.
I learned nothing during his classes, he honestly doesn't seem to care. Even if you approach him outside of class he doesn't bother to try and make more sense and gets mad at you if you STILL don't understand. Notes are useless. And even if you study from the text, his exams are way left field. AWFUL. AVOID.
Dr. Taube is one of the best professors offered at the U of A. He is very knowledgeable in the field of ochem and he is very enthusiastic about the course. Of course, ochem is one of the harder introductory courses in university and I think any prof would be rated "hard" because of it. Has an accent but easily understandable. Makes jokes sometimes!
Good Prof. Very hardworking Fella, haha
Although he has a solid understanding of course concept,if can be very difficult to find the will power to pay attention. Good sense of humour but mono-tone voice puts class to sleep. Offers free review sessions. Overall average professor.
Very good prof, extremely friendly and helpful. His notes are really good and organized. the fairest prof when it comes to exams. He only tests from his notes and does not test you from the textbook. Fair grader as well. Really enthusiastic about the stuff and maintained a great atmosphere throughout the semester. Exams are easy if you attend class
CLASS IS BORING AND I WOULD RECOMMEND READING THE DAYS CONTENT B4 GOING TO CLASS SINCE HE TEACHES AS IF U ALREADY KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. FAIR MIDTERM HOWEVER THE FINAL HAD QUITE A BIT OF THEORY, INCLUDING DEFINITIONS THAT DO NOT SEEM THAT IMPORTANT AND ARENT WELL KNOWN. HE LOVES WHAT HE TEACHES AND TRIES TO MAKE THE CLASS FUN
Great professor, makes great notes and offers free review sessions for midterm and final. Exams are fair and if you study hard you will recieve what you want in his class. I was amused by how fast he mark our exams, basically you will know your grade two to three days after your exam!
A prof who is very interested in what he teaches. Quiz and midterm were almost identical to the ones posted online. Final was quite a bit harder, with a lot of emphasis on the last few classes. Posts all notes online, with lots of practice and homework to try. Classes were a bit slow, but he seems to be a very nice guy with a great sense of humor
decent professor, good notes and exams very predictable.
He was difficult to understand, notes are super brief and pretty much useless for studying. If you get him, definitely read the textbook. Going to class is usually a waste of time.
guys don't lishen to any one i am telling you guys, the amount of help this guy provided me off class was just unreal. i went to him 1 full straight week 1-2 hours every single day and he was there to help me. ALSO he is the only prof to have office hours every single day. He was the best but know that u have to study as well lol. amazing prof
awesome prof! if chem is not your thing he is a good prof to have as he is very helpful and very approachable! marks exams very quickly and exams are nearly identical to practice tests
I hate organic chemistry but Dr. Taube made it bearable. He's very helpful- offers nightime review sessions before every exam on his own time! Also, his exams were very fair and there were no surprises if you did the practice midterm. Chem 261 can be a nightmare but I'd guess he's one of the best instructors for it at the U of A.
As long as you do his practice questions, his class is not hard. He's also pretty helpful if you take the time to go to his office.
He's so laid back. just attend his lectures and you'll be fine. do his problem sets a few days before the test to keep the material fresh.
awesome both 101 and 261. courses difficult but university chem is not easy no matter who you take it from. either textbook or attendance is mandatory because his notes are brief and don't really make sense unless you use something else as well. exams very fair, absolutely nothing on them that aren't in his notes. He loves chemistry and it shows!!
Although a very nice guy (so I almost feel bad giving him a bad review) Dr Taube is not a good prof. His notes are incomplete and not helpful, and the textbook (Wiley) is not easy to follow. After the midterm there were students everywhere withdrawing from the course, & so many in my honors/specialization that my supervisor was obviously surprised.
This class is difficult as it is and Taube doesn't help one bit in making it any easier to understand. I mainly had to use secondary sources to help me understand the material (YouTube videos, Khan's Academy etc.). I would highly suggest taking a different prof if the option is available to you.
263 is way better than 261, and Taube definitely grows on you. His midterms were super fair, except they are slightly deceiving compared to the final, in that the midterms were practical and his final had a lot of theory. He's a great prof, I'm gonna miss him in 361.
I HONESTLY DONT KNOW HOW SOMEONE COULD ENJOY STUDYING FOR ORGANIC. IF YOU THOUGHT 261 HAD A LOT OF RXNS JUST WAIT FOR 263. I CAN TELL THAT TAUBE LOVES WHAT HE TEACHES, AND HE TRIES TO MAKE IT INTERESTING, BUT ITS HARD MAKING SUCH BORING CONTENT INTERESTING. MT AND FINALS ARE FAIR, BUT BE PREPARED FOR SOME THEORY ON THE FINAL!
If you do the homework and re write the mechanisms, like he tells you to do, its really not that hard at all. Dont try to memorize it all the night before, as you can see doesn't work from the reviews below.
He was a good prof. Very helpful in office hours and excellent notes. However, he has a thick accent so it takes a while to get used to his accent. His exams are very fair, as long as you study hard exams should be good for they are similar in format to his practice. Overall good prof I would recommend.
Just awful, this class is hard to begin with but Taube just makes it more confusing and he killed everyone on the final, when a class has to get curved to a 50 percent average I think its the prof not the students! Take a different prof!
This prof does not explain things clearly in lectures, but if you go to his office, he will help you.I used some outside sources (internet) to understand a few concepts, and I just drew the mechs in the notes over and over until I remembered them all. If you have trouble just ask the prof or TAs in help room. Class avg is low but exams aren't hard.
I didn't do well in this class despite hard work so I have nothing nice to say. I didn't go to class at all and you'll know y once you sit through it for a few lectures. I did not understand what he said and his explanations did not make sense at all. Don't buy the textbook seriously, there's sooo much online ochem stuff for free.
Lots of mechanisms and reactions to memorize. It's easy to not pay attention in lectures, but if you do and read over your notes it all makes sense in the end. His accent is somewhat thick but you get used to it. I personally loved this prof. Don't buy text, just google for resources online.
Decent teacher, but I found that there was a lot of material to go through. Ochem isn't easy, and you definitely have to work hard. Curve definitely helps out though.
I found his class to be fairly hard because he doesn't explain mechanisms very well and he went way too fast through the notes. Went to every class, was confused every class. I would not recommend this prof, especially for organic chem
Dr. Taube does a fairly good job of explaining mechanisms and concepts, but he does expect his students to catch on fast and to remember quite a bit from 261. Paying attention in class definitely helps but even if you don't, the notes do make sense in the end. His exams are fair and to succeed, you must read and memorize the notes thoroughly .
Notes: well organized and the concepts are laid out well. They are confusing, but they were less confusing when I went to the lectures. However he does expect you to know some fine details. Lectures: not very engaging and he has somewhat a monotone voice. He just needs to "modernize" his lectures. He also cracks some jokes which I like.
provides clear notes that are general so you definately have to study certain things in greater detail. very helpful during office hours and provides plenty of ressources to help you do well. can sometimes be difficult to understand but you get used to it. difficult exams but they are fair, bottom line you must know your stuff.
He cared for his students, but I felt as though going to class was pretty useless. Notes are all over the place (in class) but the annotated notes he posts afterward are great. His problem sets don't really look like his exams, but organic chem is very intuitive and requires more work than just doing the sets. It requires you to KNOW your stuff.
Useless teacher. He's using another teacher's old notes, and he is basically robotic in his lectures. If he doesn't know something (i.e. the whole course) he just mumbles in his poor English, and hopes that nobody asks a question. Strange fella.
Easy going old guy, does have German accent. Personally I found him to be the best, well Apelblat is as good anyway.. his exams are a joke and are easy to ace. YOU NEED TO KNOW YOUR STUFF TO GET AN A+.. ooh and class is curved.. I loved his classes and you probably would too
He speaks with a monotone voice... mumbles a lot and hard to keep attentive in class. He makes a lot of mistakes going through the notes, and never looks up to answer student's questions. Going to class is so useless and the practice exams are nothing like his actual tests since he just gives Apelblat's practice exams.
Boring class. Makes so many mistakes in his notes which ends up being really confusing. Seems like a really nice guy, and he cares about his students just not the best prof. His exams were okay, some questions seemed a bit random though. And his practice exams are nothing like his actual ones since he uses apelblats.
class extremely boring and it takes about a month to figure out his german accent. he makes so many mistakes, it makes the course material confusing. since he doesn't ever look up, questions are rarely answered. prof totally destroyed the course for me.
He's not very clear in class but he uses Apelblat's notes which are very good. Hard exams, lots of theory and tricky multiple choice. If you are not good at chem, I would not recommend him.
HT is an amazing prof for both 261 and 263. Clear, concise notes but most of all he's extremely approachable and helpful during office hours. He genuinely cares about students. Hmwk sets are a must and will prep you for exams well. I can't say enough kind things about HT. Outstanding prof and a funny and caring person :)You get used to the accent!
The amount of work that I had to contribute to walk out of the final with an A+ is unbelievable. He has the thickest accent and uses another prof's notes. He makes a lot of mistakes and is unclear. BUT... his exams are not bad. Textbook was my best friend.
Textbook and notes afterwards more useful. Didn't understand much in class.
I think he tries to show interest in his student by giving night seminars in addition to his office hours. I think he is not bad guy but not the best prof. He is very confusing sometimes with his accent too, and the seminar just repeat the answers for the homework he posts online. I learned more on my own than in class.
He just does power points... not very good prof in front of the class, but if you try one on one, he is amazing. very kind and considerate. He will make sure you understand what you asked before you leave. String german accent
Excellent prof. He is very clear on what he wants the class to know. If he's still teaching definitely take Ochem with him
My favourite chemistry professor so far! He is great! Albeit sometimes in class I was confused but that had more to do with the material itself than anything. What I love about him is that he holds weekly help sessions for anybody and everybody and he's very patient. Truly cares about the student doing well and thats hard to come by in university!
I had a hard time adjusting to his accent, but after I adjusted everything made so much sense! He's a bit old, but otherwise a good prof.
Having Dr. Taube as a professor for Chem 105 was one of the best experiences of my university career. This professor is a gem at the U of A and it is a shame he retired.
Taking this class means a lot of work on your own time. His notes and lectures just aren't enough. I've only survived because of Chem 30 IB, and because after the first quiz I stopped listening to him and just started writing notes from my textbook and the internet. He's such a tough marker. He rarely gave partial marks, and took off a lot.
Just thinking about this class makes me upset. He seems like a really nice guy, but the combination of thick accent, sparse notes, and tough grader made this class the bane of my gpa. I'm a solid B student struggling to just pass this class.
good person, means well, but doesn't know how to teach step by step and work up. He assumes you know a lot of material already when taking the course. Tough grader, but a lot kinder than most of the Chem profs at U of A. Beware- simple math, but no calculators on tests. There was 3 tests total, and 25% of your mark is lab (grade booster)
He is a good professor for a first year course. Some concepts were brushed over too quickly, but if you read the textbook and do his homework questions you should be fine. Notes were good. He gives many resources to study off of for midterms/exams and gives exams with similar questions. He is kind and easy to talk to after class.
Seems like a nice guy, but his accent makes it difficult to understand. In all honesty, I only went once a week following the midterm to see where he was in his lecture notes so that I could keep up while teaching myself the material. Thankfully the class is curved, so even if you get lower marks, you could still finish with a good letter grade.
Not a great prof, monotone, and lectures assume you know the material a bit already. I would recommend teaching yourself the material, and studying for the Quiz and Midterm. They are SUPER easy and almost exactly the same as practice ones he posts. If you are good at teaching yourself material and want easy tests, this is the prof.
