Excellent teacher. Crystal clear lectures. Requires hard work, but grades fairly
Talks too fast. Knows he's smart. NEVER space off during lectures.
Great teacher, extremely clear thinking.
Both the pedagogy and philosophy are impeccable. In addition to this, it is clear that he cares deeply about his students and does everything he can to help them learn.
Smart and unbelievably hot!!! I'd let him teach me philosophy anytime.
This man is gorgeous and so intelligent! He comes into class without any notes and just spouts things off from memory. He's amazing and I'd love to take him again for anything. He does challenge you though...
Very good teacher. I really feel like i have learned something profound after taking his course. He is very smart and will go over things you dont understand as many times as you need. Also a great singer;)
Excellent teacher. Clear lectures, answers all questions, always available to help during office hours. His course made me make up my mind and declare philosophy.
THIS GUY IS THE SHIAT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great professor! He was tough when I was taking him, talks so fast and full of information. I am using his notes for a graduate class. I would recommend him to those interested in philosophy.
Hud is a god. I don't care if you have zero interest in philosophy, every student should take a class from this man, just for the sake of having a "true college experience". And even if you end up hating the class, he's really fun to look at ;)
i think he probably knows everything in the world. hes awesome though and very intersting and funny. just pay attention!
Awesome teacher, taking him during summer quarter, and the guy is awesome. Even with only a 6 week quarter, he still is managing to teach us a lot and keep it extremely clear. Ask questions if you don't understand, He Will Help! Anyone who wants a good teacher for Philsophy at Western, Hud is your man. And apparently the ladies like him too =P.

Smart, well-spoken guy who is full of himself. His assignments tend to be exercises in careful regurgitation. Plays at the role of being a mentor/helper; but really delights in confusing students with intricate sentence structures. Jeans too tight!
He uses a lot of big words.
clear, helpful, exhaustive
If the true reason you are going to college is to learn and think, you could not possibly regret taking a class from Hud Hudson
amazing human being. smartest person you'll ever meet, probably. if you want to think and learn, take his classes. 300/400 level courses are NOT easy. changed my life. (taken 113, 114, 366, 367, 368, 417)
I took philosophy with Hud as an undergraduate at Western in the mid 1990's. I have since got a PhD of my own... he has been quite an inspiration in my teaching and research alike. No student should be allowed to graduate Western without taking at least one of his courses.
He's a very fare and clear teacher. He's very smart and interesting. i recomend taking a class with him. if you study you will get the grade you deserve
this guy is insanely smart. if you really want to think outside of the box, take hud. he's clear on what's going to be on the tests and teaches everything you need to know. very, very good prof. i highly recommend him.
For a 100-level GUR, extremely in-depth lectures - and very engaging discussions.
This man is an incredible professor! If you are looking to actually learn something at college take one of his classes. His lecture style is face paced but he will always take time to adequately answer any question you could have.
This class was interesting to say the least. The topics we covered required a good amount of thought to grasp all the concepts. The lectures were pretty fast-paced, but he was always willing to clarify or explain things in a different way. He's easily one of the smartest people I've ever listened to.
Probably one of the most intelligent and genuinely interesting professors I've had so far. Definitely a class worth taking. Not too difficult, but thought-provoking.
Interesting, really an interesting class. Hud is obviously incredibly intelligent but sometimes I felt the material was displayed in hard to grasp format. Honestly it's really interesting, but NOT easy
He's smart so if Philosophy isn't your thing he might confuse you.
By far the best prof I've had at WWU. Lectures are fast, but easy to follow if you don't zone out. Hud is by far the smartest person I've ever met. Take any class you can from him! You won't regret it! Truly a world class professor.
Amazing professor. Intriguing subject. You have to attend class every session if you want to get an A. the exams are essays, but you get the prompt prior to the exam so it should be no issue. You have to pay attention and think. Youll learn more than you expect. we didnt use the book as much. dont take if you are a slacker. Favorite philo prof.
Extremely intelligent and very interesting. I basically had my mind blown three days a week. And an entire class devoted to discussion of time travel? Hard to tell what he's looking for on tests even though he gives the questions beforehand, but even though it dropped my GPA, I still consider it worthwhile.
I loved Hud. I am not a philosophy major, but the class interested me, so I took it and Hud made it amazing and fun! One of my favorite professors at WWU!
I'm not a philosophy major, but I took the class anyways. He moves fast, but if you pay attention and think he can be followed. Exams are essay's and he gives you the prompts a week prior. Go get feedback on your potential answers during his office hours. Great prof. VERY SMART.
Don't blink or sneeze in this class or you'll be toast. Lectures are fast and complex. Hudson is very thorough and clear. Only two essay assignments determine the grade. Notes, notes, and more notes. Come with your 'A' game everyday or else fall behind fast. Very good class. Hudson is easily one of the best profs I've had.
VERY great teacher. He teaches systematically and is very clear and thorough. As long as you never miss a lecture (he doesn't follow a text), and take detailed notes of everything he writes not he board (easy to do) - you are guaranteed at least a B. Also, if you are lost -just ask and he will gladly bring you up to speed in seconds! Best teacher!
Class was way over my head...really hard. Dropped the class. He cares...but he taught to the smartest people in the room. Can ask questions..but tests are very nit picky.
Simple the best teacher you are likely to find at western. Clear, Caring, Fun, Funny, and ridiculously intelligent.take any class he teaches. Period
It's like being taught by Morpheus. If you're like me and think that is awesome, take one of his courses.
Hud's love of the subject matter is infectious and he easily demonstrates why people continue to study philosophy. Yes, I worked hard—I took several classes from Hud including a 400-level independent study course in the mid-1990's. If you do well in his class you should be able to handle graduate or professional school.
I had Hud for a prof in the late 90s. Here I am now. What does that say? A lot, I think. At the time, I didn't appreciate what an incredible teacher he was. In fact, I gave him a pretty harsh evaluation at one point. Now I would say that he is truly an amazing teacher who had a big influence on me.
If you don't go to class you won't get an A. That being said, you definitely want to go to class because it's always interesting. Maybe not the most approachable guy, and his answers sometimes leave you more confused than you were before you asked him the question, but he makes philosophy fun anyhow. He also has a cool office and a nice voice.
My favorite professor in the department. If you're considering majoring in philosophy and aren't sure yet, take a class with him. I didn't think I was interested in philosophy of religion at all, but after a class with Hud, my opinion was totally changed.
Heavy metaphysical dude. He's got the nickname Gunk Hudson in my book. If you take him, ask him about gunk or read his papers on it. Also check out his literature blog on his web sight. He's also got some cute picture of his dog up there. I've never met such a tall man who looks so much like such a small dog. :) I admire his ethics when it comes to
He is so knowledgeable about philosophy, his lectures were great. If you don't go to class, you won't know what on earth is going on, so attendance is a must. There is no canvas page, so make a buddy in the class! If you need clarification on something, he is great at explaining things in better detail. I enjoyed his class a lot! Also, no book!
If you come to class and are engaged in the material, you'll do wonderfully. The lectures are great for an intro-level philosophy class and if you're confused about anything or have any interesting tangential thoughts about the material, he'll explain things and help you explore ideas if you visit his office hours
Entire class broken into 2 essays, a midterm and a final. Lectures are very intelligent but occasionally hard to follow and he doesn't check for comprehension well. Not a super clear grading criteria for the essays. No textbook required.
Great teacher. Best lecures
I didn't care for his teaching style. He talks at us for the whole hour, does not lend a lot of room for student contribution, and has trouble gauging student comprehension. However, his study guides are the exact questions that will be on the test, which makes the class an easy A.
Hud is the professor who inspired me to start taking philosophy classes. Lectures are engaging, humorous and very understandable. Show up, do the work, and your grade will reflect that.
One of the best teachers I've had so far at Western. By far the coolest. He made philosophy of religion far more interesting than I ever thought it could be. If you have the chance take a lecture with Hud!
Really smart, respectable professor. Definitely knows what he's talking about. Gives good lectures and the exams are based off of his lectures, there is no reading required. He goes through every question on the study guide for the exams which makes them a lot less intimidating. Definitely recommend if you are taking a philosophy class.
Hud is my favorite professor so far in college. He is wonderful, brilliant, and willing to engage with you at length outside of class. He holds you to a high standard and made me a better philosopher through it.
Awesome prof! His lectures are fantastic. He explains things very well and he is fascinating. His tests are somewhat hard but he gives out a study guide with all the questions and reviews what he expects for answers.
One of my favorite professors at Western. Hud enjoys what he teaches and ensures that the class really understands all of the difficult material. He gives out the test questions ahead of time and tells you the exact answers during the review session. Made me actually enjoy philosophy.
Hud is all around a super cool guy. He knows what he's talking about, and don't dare question him because he can prove anything he says in depth. He was funny and the class was super easy if you showed up and took good notes. It's mostly memorization on the 3 written exams that make up your grade. Good choice for an easy GUR.
I took this class my freshman year in order to complete a GUR. I showed up to class about 80% of the time. No textbook. Hud was kind/ flexible as long as you communicate. Without his lectures, you'll fail. If you go and take thorough notes, you'll do great. He gives you the test questions; if you can write word-for-word what he says in class: A!
Hud is favorite philosophy professor at WWU. He has some ambiguous expectations for 366, and his lectures were tough to follow for casual learners and aspiring philosophy majors alike, which makes office hours a must. Thankfully, he is intelligent, articulate, kind, caring, and knows what he's talking about. Allow yourself at least one dose of Hud.
Hud is a really great teacher who really does his best to allow his students to succeed. His voice and teaching style is also very relaxing and easy to listen to. 10/10 best prof of mine this quarter
PSA: Hud usually gives an award to the student who writes the best midterm paper. There is very little reading assigned and the classes are easy IF you show up and pay attention. Be prepared to take notes as fast as possible and visit his office hours if you don't understand something. Hud is rad
Hud is EASILY the best professor I have ever had at WWU. I had never taken a philosophy class before this and he was able to discuss high level concepts with us while keeping us afloat. it was a challenging course but I enjoyed every second. he is funny, kind, intelligent, I could go on forever. I have the utmost respect for him.
Hud is a character, he gave our class possibly the most boring lectures I've ever listened to. I suppose if you are deep into a philosophy major his lectures could be of value, otherwise I would say: steer away. Boiled Down: Non-sensical lecture style and weird assignment/ class structure.
I absolutely love Hud. He's a chill dude, his recorded lectures were interesting, and his class wasn't too hard. I honestly wish I was a philosophy major so I could take more of his classes. His lecture style can be somewhat nonlinear and difficult to parse, though.
Grade relies on 3 exams each of which requires an essay which can be hard to whip up if you don't know what lil huddy phrases to regurgitate back at him in a cohesive, persuasive format. Even if you can memorize half of the study guide w terms, you'll have 50% essay. Very meta and hard to follow. Don't take unless you're a dedicated philosophy bro.
I wouldn't take this class unless you're really into philosophy, the lectures are really boring and i didn't learn a single thing. One time he was explaining an argument and it didn't make any sense and when someone asked about it and started debating him he just said we don't get it because we don't understand the complexity of the argument.
He is one of the best
I love Hud. I swear I asked him questions after every class and he always gave an in-depth answer. I am a very lazy student and I was able to study enough to pass the exams. One of my favorite professors ever.
Hud is a pretty great orator. Lectures are engaging and you can easily pass if you just attend class. Very little class discussion, but it did not take away from my experience. Go to office hours if you are confused because he will give you word for word what you need to know for exams.
I love this man. He knows his content thoroughly and lectures extremely well. I enjoy talking to him as both professor and person. He is very accommodating to specific needs and let me take an exam early as needed. I highly recommend taking a class with Hud, he is my favorite professor so far.
PHIL 113 is a class that involves nothing but you, Mr. Hudson, and philosophy. Outside of the 3 exams given over the course of the quarter the class is just listening to attention grabbing lectures and taking notes. Pure philosophy, no bullshit. While I have no interest in the field I loved taking this class for a GUR!
Hud is a great professor! Even though I did not understand one lecture somehow I still scored great on the exams. There are 2 or 3 midterms and one final, all essay based. If you attend class and go to the review day you will be set. I never went "in depth" with my essays, I stayed "surface level" and still got A's on my exams.
Maybe the best professor I've had at Western. Philosophy can be intimidating but his lectures were very focused and you could tell he knew what he was talking about. Attendance is a must, everything is about the lectures. But they are pretty easy to follow along with and he will stop on a dime to answer any questions.
A very interesting class, Hud is a very nice and intelligent professor but the class is comprised of very tough material with no comprehension checks, just class after class of uninterrupted lecture. The class was graded on three exams which made getting a decent score tough especially with how stingy the professor is with points.
Hud is the GOAT lecturer. Never seen someone do it like him
Very laid back, and is super quick to email you back. He goes over a study guide with you in class before exams. He explains pretty complicated ideas, but overall easy to follow.
Hud was an amazing professor! He's very knowledgeable about the material and lectured with no slides or notes. The class is graded based of 3 exams, no homework or reading outside of class outside of studying for exams. Exam questions are given beforehand in a study guide. He is also very open to questions and open discussion in class.
hud is awesome! he delivers material clearly and will answer any and all questions no hesitation. if you miss class you're screwed because the concepts are kind of hard to learn just from notes, but office hours are helpful. I definitely want to take more classes with him.
Hud is an amazing professor, he is so passionate about what he is teaching. Only graded on 3 exams that are pretty difficult because you have to memorize a lot word for word, but he gives exam questions like a month ahead of time. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you miss a class you will miss a lot of info you'll need for exams.
Hud is a very nice person who clearly loves philosophy. However, the class has 3 in class tests where you are supposed to just repeat what he has said to you in class. This philosophy class does not encourage any discussion on the topic, it is simply listen and repeat. Grading on the essays is seemingly arbitrary, with no guidelines or rubrics
To get by in this class, you've really gotta go to the lectures and take notes. When I took it, there was absolutely no homework or reading, although it is important to use the test guide as soon as you've got it. Hud seems like an interesting dude. I found Hud's lectures slightly hard to follow, but usually understandable by the end.
Hud was a unique teacher. You need to show up as the only content for the class is provided in person there is no online asignments only 3 in person exams. The problem with this class is you need to remmeber the exact words hud uses to articulate his arguments or you will lose points because the words you used could have held different meanings.
Hud is the GOAT. This class was so much fun and so interesting. You could tell he loved the subject material and was passionate about it. Lectures were amazing and he was super helpful during office hours too!
This was my third class with Hud and he's going 3 for 3! This is his Kant class, and to my knowledge this was the first quarter where he split it between Kantian works and works by Nietzsche and Schopenhauer and I am glad he did!
Professor Hudson was a tough grader for sure, but the lectures were amazing and clear. A lot of it is memorizing things word-for-word, so if that isn't your forte, I would reconsider. Very passionate about his subject and makes it very clear what you need to study for. Also had a system (2 years ago) where you could ask others for notes via Canvas.
The way he talks reminds me of Kronk from Emporers New Groove, and is spoken in a way that just ropes you in. There's only 3 exams as work and that's all. I've met a few times with Hud outside of class and he seems like a very happy, down to earth guy. He broke a huge smile when he learned that we can have ESAs on campus and couldn't be more happy.
He was a great professor, though if you're not really into philosophy sometimes things go over your head. Attendance isn't graded but I'm telling you right now, you really should go! The whole class is graded by three tests, and they are memorization tests. Pretty easy if you've been going, but it sucks if you haven't!
Amazing, very tight lectures. attendance isn't taken, but you should consider it mandatory as there is little to no resources for outside of class. Hud knows his stuff and expects you to know the exact same things, makes it incredibly easy to get a good grade as long as you show up, pay attention, and take notes.
Hud is by far the best professor I have had at WWU. Incredibly humble, stupidly smart, and always willing to answer questions in detail. He cares deeply about his field and clearly cares about transferring that passion to his students. No reading, homework, or mandatory attendance. He cares about your time and genuinely wants students to engage.
I've taken two classes with Hud, he's a very fun professor who's always fun to listen to. I've loved both courses. He also is very fair in his tests, he will give you the possible questions ahead of time and make it easier to study and even lets you bring a page of notes to the tests. Love him hope to take him again
Hud is brilliant, and you can tell he is. He is a very engaging lecturer, and answers questions very politely. I wish that in this class touched on Locke's Political Philosophy. The class is based off of three exams, all of which you need whats on the board to copy the arguments. I wish there was more room for our own thinking, not regurgitation..
