attendance is mandatory but overall a very good prof. His film choices are very good.
Hudson is a really cool prof. He's not hard and make the course very fun. Very educational and probably one of the best elective courses I've ever had. It's very enlightening. Thanks Hudson! All the best!!!
Worst Prof ever! Marks tough and expects everyone to know what he is talking about. EXTREMELY BORING and shows horrible movies that no one cares about. Also forces you to buy a booklet worth $50 and does not allow you to write any assesments until you have the book. Worst prof I have ever had, do not understand how he has a 5.0 rating.
I found him to be difficult especially because it was tough to understand him. Paying attention was difficult because things were scattered all over the place. The lectures felt as if there was no purpose. The assignments weren't difficult and I thought I would do very well, but he is for sure a tough marker. Many people in my class did poorly.
vague, unhelpful, doesn't even seem to know the material yet wants you to know it. It's his first time teaching the class and it showed. I hope he doesn't teach it again for the sake of those who might actually want to learn.
Moura is an awful professor. All of his tests are open-ended questions with ONE answer. That's right, if you do not write about HIS viewpoints, you are destined to fail miserably. He also picks favourite so beware. You have been warned!
Just don't take him. He is the worst, I thought I did well but clearly not he is horrible. His assignments do not make sense, and he completely ruined my gpa!
I do not understand what this class was about and i just finished it. Hudson is super unclear of what he wants from you, he doesn't teach you anything - probably because he doesn't know anything about the topics, and is super unclear with what he wants from you on tests/assignments. be prepared for "feedback" that is just your grade (i.e. 3.5/5)
Really enjoyed the films that were shown in class. The powerpoint was messy and hard to follow along. He would change topics all of a sudden and sometimes it was hard to understand him.
I'm not fond of talking about professors... but I would like to say that throughout the entire semster I learned only one concept "mise en scene" this seems to be the only topic discussed in class. His teaching method consists of asking "what do you think" it is then proceeded by a student answering his question , to which he responds "Okay".
I took his course because I like politics and this sounded like a fun elective. You watch and analyze politically themed films for 60% of the class, and they are all good films. He has a film background so it's mostly a film course rather than political. He's kinda full of himself. Course isn't hard though. Easy A.
I have no idea what this prof even taught and I went to every class and paid attention
Great professor. Makes class interesting. Lots of videos. A funny person but a little accent.
I have had Hudson Moura as a professor a couple of times. The only reason I have signed up for his class more than once is because it is incredibly easy to get an A. Apart from that, he is almost completely intolerable. I learned nothing. His lectures were not the least bit interesting - he simply rambles on and on. He's quite arrogant as well.
He is OK, I do not have much to say except that he can be a bit boring and monotone in his lectures.
DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS. If his opinion is not yours, you're failing miserably. Extremely insensitive, will not hear you out unless he has already picked you as a favourite. His movie choices are interesting, his analyses, however, are the farthest from and he is rarely willing to clarify when asked. Avoid his class altogether and do yourself a favour
You must show up to the lectures to pass. The course is pretty easy, however the reports are quite difficult as he does not explain how to do them in detail.
I do not understand what happened in this class, the prof is extremely random (so are his readings), he doesn't provide you with enough information for assignments, the class drags on, and group presentations take up so much time and students marking your presentation make up 5% of your final grade
I didn't learn a single thing in class. He's very scattered and unorganized avoid yourself hassle from the future.
This class was horrible, I didn't learn anything and he was very unclear with what he expected from students
Professor Moura is thoughtful, he takes care of students by selecting reading materials that can be obtained online. He's also a very active part in the documentary community, as he held several documentary viewings on Ryerson's campus, giving students rare opportunities to meet some truly inspiring filmmakers. Be respectful, ask questions!
He's ready to meet with you and give feedback on your work but his expectations are unclear and he can be disorganized so be alert. He's willing to help students out in any way whether it's by being a reference, or meeting up for help and you can get extra marks through attending lectures outside of class. No textbook and interesting readings.
Dr. Moura is the perfect professor for this course. He explains everything. However, due to little time, the course was rushed. Overall I enjoyed the course. Professor Moura will actually give you chances to boost up your mark, so you need to show him that you work really hard. Also, if you ask for advice, he will actually give you.
I took this course because I thought it'd be easy but I'm not into film so it was hard and I didn't really learn from it. Not good. Don't recommend. Most boring lectures ever
Dr. Moura is a great professor always available by emails or after class. Also, he gives plenty of opportunities to boost our grade with extra assignments. I definitely recommend this course if you love movies and want to learn how to analyze a film from a critical and meaningful perspective. He can be very strict during screenings, total silence.
Replies email fast and easy to talk to, but test is kinda hard.
He is not bad of a professor. For all the work that I had to do, which was a little, I think its worth it. Its an easy b+ to A- if you study the powerpoints he gives for the mid-term and final. I do not really agree with the marks I earned for the written assessments. Overall, he's a decent prof as he does not make the exams hard.
Lectures are boring, but he's a really enthusiastic prof. He skips over a majority of slides, and then the tests are based off the skipped slides. Thankfully he puts everything on D2L. He's also a bit of a hard marker, but always e-mails back quick to answer any questions.
Good prof. Shows enthusiasm in his teachings. Two major written assignments and two exams. Pretty straightforward.
Moura is a self-involved, grossly pretentious man. He consistently stops class to call out students for not paying attention but does it in the most over the top, theatrical way possible. Hard to understand, midterm had at least 3 questions I could not comprehend due to his poor English skills.
The midterm had trick questions! Make sure to watch every movie at leeeaasst 12 times so you get the smallest of references he puts in the exams. Not great english, questions can be confusing..
I thought he was a decent prof for an easy course. Tough grading on the essay. Exams were easy.
This man might be the one reason my GPA for the semester dropped. Went to him in regards to my paper and he says he cut marks because some sentences were "awkward". Asked him to elaborate and he couldn't provide an answer????? Doesnt offer a solution even if you see him after class hours. Terrible. Would not recommend.
After now completing this course with Moura as my professor (as a first year student) , he actually is not as bad as you may read on here. Yes, the language barrier can be challenging, but if you show up to class frequently you will get a good mark. Dont be afraid to take a class with Moura!
Took this as a bird course, and honestly for the work I put in, this mark is super high. If you try, you can get an A. I did my essay in 2 hours, got an 85. Didnt study for film analysis, 80. Didnt even lool at powerpoints flr fibal exam, 70. Moura is a very laid back and chill prof. You barely get any work and get to watch movies.
He calls out students if they try to leave early, so beware of that. If you don't get a good TA to mark your assignments, then it's not really worth going through the trouble of getting in to his class. Yells in to the mic to wake up people, although the material learned is interesting and he does pick pretty good films to watch.
I don't think that Dr Moura is as bad as people make him out to be. Don't get me wrong, the accent is difficult to understand and the explanations of concepts are not very clear no matter how many times you ask but the class is not super challenging and he puts in an effort every class.
Moura is one of my least favourite profs that I have had at Ryerson. Aside from having grammatically incorrect sentences in tests and lecture slides, he is very arrogant and very friendly. I would not recommend him to anyone.
Horrible. Pretentious, calls out people when they leave, claps and yells when people doze off. Horrible marker and isn't clear with what he wants. The tests include everything that is on the lectures slides that he skips through in lecture. Not as enjoyable and as fun as I thought it would be.
I had Hudson this passed semester and did fine in his course however would NOT recommend taking it with him. Not only does he post lecture slides with multiple spelling errors but he graded my essay VERY harshly for a lower level liberal. He does not provide credible feedback but will change your grade if you mention his low score on rate my prof
Moura is the most disrespectful prof I have ever encountered. His attitude toward his students and level of professionalism are both extremely poor. He would mock students who asked questions but then become angry when no one would participate in his class. He also gives no help for any of the exams, which are hard. DO NOT take this class with him.
Cant express how bad this prof is. Seriously. He is the worst professor and a disrespectful, pompous and arrogant person. He tries to bribe students to give him good reviews. "Extra credit" is creating his lecture slides which are terrible, FULL of spelling and grammatical errors & embarrassing. His grading is completely arbitrary. Just bad. AVOID!
I've never felt so disrespected as I did in his class. His lecture slides are AWFUL. A spelling mistake on more than half of the slides. Found out it's because he gives extra credit assignments to failing student to create his lecture slides. Literally this guy doesn't do anything. Can't believe he is a prof. He is RUINING RYERSON'S REPUTATION.
I took this course in my final year so I can definitively say this is the worst prof I've had at Ryerson. Stay away. Arrogant. I'm guessing he's insecure that he's only an associate/assistant prof and takes that out on his students' marks. Unnecessarily difficult. This was my lowest grade and I took 6 fourth year courses in tandem. Just stay away.
I'm a transfer student from uOttawa and I am really happy that I took this class. Moura has a lot of interesting perspectives and he is very clear with his expectations: come to class, participate and you will do well. I got a 95 on the Media Review and an 88 on the midterm and it didn't require that much effort
Bruh, I failed this class twice. TWICE! BACK TO BACK SEMESTERS. This course is soo easy that i retook it because I thought I messed up. Nope, this man unbelievable. The way he connects things is also unbelievable. You could bring him some pancakes and he will find a way to count that to a film and society.
Worst teacher/professor I have ever had. Belittles students in a way that makes them feel dumb, can't ask him questions because his English isn't good enough to understand them. Unclear on his wants, grades are completely random and not based on the content you give him. Even if he does answer questions, his answers are unclear.
Hes hugely against phones and laptops, hell literally stop class and point out kids for being on their phones, if he chilled out a bit hed be a good guy but other then that it's just annoying to have him protest phones every class. The course itself is a joke.
Was a little hesitant to have him as a prof, but he's not rlly that bad. Has an accent, but you can still understand him. He is a little strict with tech only when he is showing a clip because he actually wants us to watch it, which is understandable. He'll call u out if you're sleeping or sometimes when he notices you leave early, so pay attention
Makes such a simple class so difficult. Avoid this professor at first he acts like your best friend then eventually becomes what every review says.... Disrespectful
If you like multiple choice tests with grammar errors and very trivial questions that have nothing to do with the political context or significance of the films then this is your prof. I would advise taking this course with a different professor, since it's probably a bad sign when a professor offers over 3 bonus assignments to boost grades.
Worst prof ever. Makes a simple course unreasonably difficult. Tests are based on specifics of material and the films, it's ridiculous. His assessments test your memorization, not learning. Lecture slides are a waste - SO much text, you don't even know where to direct your focus. A couple times he's been rude to students as well. AVOID.
POL 128 was one of the worst classes I have ever taken. I took this class because it was said to be a "mark booster", but it was the opposite of this. His lectures had many grammatical mistakes as well as 40-60 slides with paragraphs written on them. He read straight from the slides and would show minute clips of screenings. Exam was very hard.
NOT AN EASY A. Don't take Moura's class if you're looking for a bird course. Lectures felt completely useless as he literally read from slide. Required movies were actually really good. Exam and midterms were ridiculous, random content. Also very difficult to understand due to grammar issues (understandable tho as English isn't his first language)
Hudson Moura is a reasonable professor. He may clap and turn on the lights to awake those sleeping, but in my case I was actively watching. Don't make the assumption that you can get an A by reading the slides, A fair amount of the questions on both the exam and mid terms are based upon the textbook readings. Overall decent if you read and show up.
Comes across as rude, pretentious, and arrogant. The midterm and final were heavily focused on the readings and a lot of questions were things only briefly touched on in class. Easy to do well if you put in the effort. I found the content of the course very interesting, but avoid taking the class with Moura if possible.
Hudson's reviews don't do him justice. Though there was a slight language barrier given that English isn't his first language, he is still an incredible prof that never failed to make me laugh. Tests are based on slides, movies and online textbook reading. The one essay we write was out of 25 marks, but it wasn't hard to get a high grade.
If you want to take this class, get a different prof. The essay assignment was so confusing, most of the prompts had grammatical errors, and was not helpful when asking for clarification. Most of the midterm questions weren't even about the films.
So this course altogether is not very good. I took it as an easy credit and to my surprise its challenging in the fact that the questions feel random. Textbook and lectures are no help at all. The grading schema is unclear and even by relying on old samples i got deducted marks for not having stuff. Get the other teacher or don't take this course.
I took this course during the quarantimes. You would have expected him to be easier during a freaking pandemic but nope. He literally made us join a zoom lecture at 2:30, half an hour before the online exam saying that he would give us tips on how to do well. The tip? Read each question carefully and have good notes. Very unclear and disorganized.
Took this class for a liberal credit and regretted my decision almost instantly. Not only is Hudson Moura one of the most unfair markers at the school, his inability to assist students in decoding the nonsense he displays on his slides made the entire experience very irritating. He is incredibly condescending and insensitive toward social issues
Professor Hudson is a fantastic professor. He is really engaging. I didn't realize it at the beginning of the course but by the end, he had managed to connect so many elements of the current politics and the refugee. I felt my perspective and ideas grow. I am very grateful for this experience.
Loved it.
I was recommended this class by many people, I thought it was going to be a bird course, so it was with other profs, but Moura seemed uninterested at times and was always searching for words to describe the films. It didn't feel organic. He is an extremely tough grader and I find it to be pedantic. The essay grading was the worst. I expected higher
This course will change the way you think about movies and help you better grasp politics in general! It is NOT an easy course when it comes to tests ; as specifics matter. Dr. Moura showcases a broad selection of films and goes into fine detail about things. He is brilliant and speaks 3 other languages if English isn't your first.
He seemed to be passionate about his teaching, each test was spaced out by unit (no midterm or cumulative exam), the slides were available for download. The tests are very specific but all multiple choice and the assignments are time-consuming and confusing. Not enough diversity in the type of films. The course is for dudes who worship the Joker...
One of the worst profs I've had at Rye. Very unclear on instructions and contacting him to clarify does not help at all. For someone teaching about Tech the course was littered with tech issues. English is also his 4th language and he has a strong accent and this became very obvious on the exam where some of the questions were almost unreadable.
has to be the most confusing prof in existence. Everyone took this class so that way we could get an easy mark. gives us two full length 2 hour films to watch each week, 20-40 pages to read from a textbook, . He lists it all as required work, but then most of it ends up being useless info. If I did all the work it would take 4-8 hours each week.
Weekly 20 minute lectures, that's it. Hudson Moura is a terrible, terrible professor. Thick accent, lectures are a waste of time, class organization is an absolute joke. Spelling errors and mistakes on slides and tests alike. Middle school social studies teacher caliber.
Get ready to read and regurgitate! His "quizzes" are very specific and you're not allowed to ask questions during the quiz because "question interpretation is part of the evaluation". His assignments, however, are very straight forward and he always gives a choice on topic. If you end up in his class, you NEED to put time and energy into the course
He changed up how he runs the class when everything went online. Because of this he crammed multiple movies, lectures and slides into 4 tests instead of one test a week based on one movie. His communication when it comes to questions and concerns isnt helpful at all so youll have to figure it out yourself. If youre looking for an easy mark gl
Slightly disorganized professor but he sets up the course in a way that is simplistic and easy to obtain a good mark
during online semester this 100 level class is one of my heaviest course loads for no apparent reason, disorganized and complete lack of proper feedback for marking on our projects. would not reccomend this class is very chaotic organization of d2l and class delivery and strange project involving using only quotations and images from an article..
AVOID AT ALL COST I KID U NOT
Feedback he gives for papers doesn't make much sense, powerpoints for lectures are copied straight from readings (no original content) and they are typically 50+ slides long. That said, exams are pretty easy and questions come straight from the slides.
Took CPOG444 class run by Moura over a virtual setting. D2L workspace was an absolute cluttered mess, with literally almost 200 posted materials ranging from recorded lectures to reading to work samples. Moura is exceedingly specific in grading criteria; if you don't give what he wants, you will hardly pass. Avoid this professor if possible.
I learned absolutely nothing from this class. Moura expects you to go through about 7-10 hours of material per week, he only lectures for about 30 minutes and it's incoherent. If you have to have him as a prof I highly recommend doing exactly what is asked of you for the assignments. He uses double negatives on his tests as well which is confusing
Ive heard that this course was great since the first year, and I finally got to take it. Prof. Moura is one of the best professors that Ive had at Ryerson. He is very knowledgeable and respectful, and this course was enjoyable to study. Im willing to take any of Prof. Mouras courses, and I recommend everyone take it!
Mr. Moura is the best professor I have EVER! I learned a lot about not just film but political in general. He really knows his stuff. Do all of the work and I promise you will grow and have a stronger understanding of the material. The assignments were engaging and participatory. I honestly can't recommend him enough. Mr. Moura is amazing!
I asked Prof. Moura many questions during the term and he patiently answered all and even very simple and not very smart questions. I really appreciate that! And I like the FOUR bonus marks. It is so easy to get if you answer 8 surveys and it made me a A. I would definitely recommend Prof. Moiras classes,I wish I could take more of his classes!
Prof. Moura gives great lecturers and overall witty guy and easy to talk to both in and after class/office hours. His classes are interesting, and he showed a lot of films during the lecture, which made it not seem so long. He is a very effective teacher, and the info is there if you put the work in. I would recommend Professor Moura to everyone.
The class wasn't as bad as everyone says. As long as you watch the movies and skim the textbook, the quizzes are easy. Dr. Moura provides a ton of resources on the D2L that are really helpful. You can tell he's interested and knowledgeable on all the topics and overall the content of the class was really interesting. Happy I took this class.
I was apprehensive about how difficult it would be going into this course, but I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was to manage with my other classes. Dr. Moura's lecture notes are great and he is completely reasonable regarding the extensions of deadlines. The required films were also solid choices.
Course itself is not very difficult if you do a decent job at studying. The majority of quiz answers come directly from lecture slides. Pre-recorded lectures are LONG(3+ hours sometimes). Would not take a course of his again due to his lack of time management. He agreed to return graded essays by a certain date and pushed this date back 4 times!
Hudson shows clear passion when it comes to film analysis and politics. Lectures contain a lot of info, but the subject matter is very interesting. There were 3 multiple choice quizzes and 2 essays; not so difficult. If you are interested in looking deeper into films, you'll enjoy POL 128 with Hudson Moura.
Honestly, he seems like a nice guy, but POL 128 was a scam. I thought we were going to watch movies and have cool discussions, but instead, we did quizzes on bad movies with weird and oddly specific questions, like who said this line, or who wore this hat, no joke. I also find it very weird that we have to write a huge essay when his grammar sucks.
To anyone who is thinking of taking a course of his in the future, I strongly caution you against it. His slides are straight from the textbook, the D2L site is littered with irrelevant material, and his lectures are painfully dry. Not to mention that English is his fourth language and all his work is littered with grammatical mistakes. Horrible.
I’m surprised to see that Professor Moura got so many negative comments here, because I’ve taken two of his courses and I would say that he is one of best professors at Ryerson. He is not only knowledgeable, but he also tries hard to help the students to learn and pass the course. I would want to take as many courses as possible from Moura.
Dr. Moura is fair, experienced and knowledgeable. He puts a lot of thought into his class and he provides very details guidelines and instructions. If you pay attention, ask questions and stay up with the reading and writing and I'm sure you'll get high A's. I'll take one more of Dr. Moura's classes next semester and I like the bonus marks as well
Hudson is a great professor who truly cares his students. He has been extra great teaching online during COVID1-19 and he always there to help. Hudson is one of the nicest Professor at Ryerson and I would recommend him without any reservations!
I would say that Dr. Moura is an very easy and laid back person. But when the time comes to be serious, Dr. Moura is one of the most helpful professors that I have ever had. He is always willing to go the extra miles for his students to give them the help they need. If you have the opportunity to take Dr. Moura courses don't miss out.
Dr. Moura is a great Professor at Ryerson! He knows so much about what he teaches, and he is very nice to his students. Dr. Moura offers to help students out with papers after class and is very lenient when it comes to making up quizzes or late projects. He is THE most pleasant Professor that I know of!
Hudson is kind, caring, and attentive. He provides excellent feedback. He is genuinely one of the best professors at Ryerson. I am willing to take as many courses as possible with him. I found out his classes are very interesting and informative. He is very a fair marker with fair assignment, and you can achieve a high grade if you make the effort
One of the BEST professors I have ever had in at Ryerson. He is kind, helpful, considerate and available after school. He knows what he is talking about. Hudson has been one of the most inspirational professors I have ever had (honestly!!!) I really enjoyed his lectures because he relates the concepts he is teaching with real life experiences.
Currently taking POL507 with Professor Moura as well. Informative, prepared and fair. Films and Politics was the best course I took at RU. Interesting topics and clear feedback.
He is a very caring and understanding professor. will definitely take his class again.
I really enjoyed studying this course. Dr. Moura made it very interesting. It is a very useful course for all of us. We learned how social media control our minds. Something that I've never thought of before. Thanks to Dr. Moura for his effort in making it so interesting and informative I will definitely take more of Dr. Moura's courses.
Dr. Moura was an absolute gem. He genuinely cares about how his students learn the course and he makes it very easy for everyone because he wants every student to succeed. I've taken Dr. Moura's three courses and I hope I can take the fourth one.
Wonderful prof. Seriously, take advantage of this bird course. It will boost your gpa since he's an easy marker. quiz questions were asked from lecture slides, movies and the online textbook. Best teacher for this course, super easy and nice.
Overall he is an amazing professor. The "textbook" is a pdf you can access for free. All the films are already uploaded online and overall the course is easy and really fun to participate in.
Amazing lecture and so interest to learn.! Will definitely recommend Dr. Moura!
Dr. Moura is a great professor and I really learned a lot from this course! He was easy to contact outside of class and is a very fair grader. The course itself is super interesting and Dr. Moura is quite knowledgable about all of the topics covered. Overall, I would take one of his classes again and recommend others to do the same!
I absolutely loved having Hudson as my summer school Prof. He is so helpful and genuine and wants all his students to succeed. He teaches you the exact format for answering the quiz questions so there is no surprise on any of the tests. The lectures were interesting and informative, plus he gave out helpful handouts.
I just want to add that I LOVED this course! Participation in this class was very beneficial as a lot of his discussions were for the quizzes and surveys. So it makes it so much easier for you to get good marks!
Hudson is one of those great profs at TMU. I've taken a few of his courses and learnt a lot from him. I would say that Hudson is a very helpful prof, if you have a problem, he will try very hard to help you, and make sure that you are good. And the quizzes are easy! I got good marks on all the courses, because Hudson gives everyone extra marks!
Dr. Moura is a very knowledgeable and a leader researcher in the field. His course material is always up to date and was very interesting. He is also very nice and helpful professor. I would say one of the nicest professors at TMU. I really enjoyed the course! I felt completely at ease in his class.I will definitely take another of his courses!
bruh he literally kicked us out because 2 people were on phones? and our quizzes are based on movies he barely showed or explained
Professor Moura gives very informative lectures. Overall a very witty guy! He is very flexible with his office hours and the exams are fine if you study material from the slides and textbook. Don't ever expect that you can get a great mark if you do not study at all! If you do pay attention, you can get very good marks in his courses for sure!
Overall he is pretty understanding but very heavy lectures and readings. Not a fan of how your entire grade is basically based on only 3 quizzes.
Way too much work for a lower liberal course. The quizzes cover way too many slides, readings, and movies. This course was not worth it. However, the prof is a nice guy but hard to understand because he is not fluent in English. If you plan on taking POL 128, take it with Sandra Lim. It's a easy A+ in her class.
If you are searching for a bird course this ain't it. The readings are cumbersome and cover a very large range of topics that must be memorized as each quiz can cover even the smallest detail from each reading. Lectures did not provide much insight to facilitate higher understanding of the material, moreso just repetition of the slides.
Class can be very heavy on film material, slides & readings, if English is your thing, this class is for you! If you cover a bit of everything, you'll ace the quizzes each time. He also gives a chance to rewrite failed quizzes! Total bird course, easy if you put in the work, but that can be said for anything lol.
Professor Moura is not only an amazing instructor but also an amazing guy!!! He can make extremely dry material very interesting. I enjoyed this course very much, and I've learnt a lot from each lecture. I would for sure take another of Prof. Moura's courses if I could. His course is very easy to get good marks. He is one of the best profs at TMU!
What I really liked about this course is that prof Moura always refers to and stresses important points that you will need to remember for future quizzes and exams. That's really hopeful! And this is the easiest course I've taken during my undergraduate study. I would recommend prof. Moura to anyone!
Kind professor, and very passionate about political issues. There are a lot of slides and a lot of reading but it is possible to skim-read 10 minutes before each quiz. Watch the movies, and listen to his lectures, and it is an easy bird course.
The class itself was super easy and I managed a A+ by barely attending the lectures. The prof is also super helpful with feedback and brings a positive energy to class, He also gives students the exact material that would appear on the quiz. Just make sure to skim-read the slides watch the required films.
Very sweet and understanding prof. not so much of a "bird course" since skipping lectures will probably leave u at a disadvantage. if u have an eye for cinematography and film analysis this class and prof is def for u
A lot of work for a "bird" course. Required readings/movies are extensive. Final was 140 Q's in 90 mins. No Q's are answered during exams. Lectures are 40+ slides with lots of paragraphs. Essay was the most work l've put into any piece of writing but was graded a full week after the final. 4 bonus marks could be earned throughout the course.
I enjoying attending this course and I have learned a lot since the beginning. Hudson really knows his stuff, and what I appreciate him the most is that he will always try his best to help you. Excellent prof!
Forgot to mention, this is very easy course to pass if you pay attention. You'll get a good mark if you attend the lectures.
One of the best professors I've had in TMU! His lectures were interesting and he is very passionate about the subject he teaches so it's very inspirational to be in his class. If you get the chance, take his course! He cares about his students and their learning style and you can see that reflected in the way the course is structured.
I took CPOG 444 in summer after reading the rating, I did not expect that I would get good marks but this professor turned out to be a really nice one, He is 100% fair marker, yes it is not a bird cours, if you do the readings, if you study well then you will surely get A, A+. He is caring his lectures are interesting, I would absolutely recommend
Nice and caring prof, but don't take this thinking it's an easy bird course. The tests won't be easy if you don't do the readings, but don't worry there are many grade boosters as the course goes on. The only downside to this course was the long textbook readings, but if you can survive through them and watch the films, you're guaranteed an A+.
Not too much material, but whole course seems lazy. Quizzes open book and all MC. Lots of just trivia from weekly films. 10% pass/fail assignment just critiquing one of his old presentations for 1000 words. Reads from slides in lectures, etc. May seem like you're putting in more effort than him. Easy enough class but not much actual value.
This class is NOT a bird course! The lectures have so much material and the midterm and exam are all about small, unimportant details throughout the movies and textbook. Be prepared to work extra long on the final paper, as much of the classwork did not help with understanding how to write the paper.
Moura is an amazing professor. He is caring and considerate. The quizzes are very easy and straightforward as long as you read over the lectures and watch the films. There are papers in most of his classes, but he gives clear grading criteria. A lot of people complain that the paper is hard but in my opinion it is NOT hard, just time-consuming.
Such an great professor! The class was fairly easy, as long as you read the required book and watch the required films you will do amazing on the exams. Lectures were fun, the assigned films were even better! I would definitely take POL128 if you have the chance!
For all the hype this class gets, don't take it. If you do, not with Hudson Moura. He takes it too seriously, this course will probably be harder to keep up with than your required program courses.
Prof is fun and nice MOST of the time, there have been a few times where I side-eye the people next to me after he says something a bit unhinge. Knows his stuff and is able to give you a lot of knowledge. POL128 is too lecture-heavy. It was easy to keep up with the first few weeks, but after you miss one lecture, its OVER.
this is one of the laziest professors i've ever had. I stopped attending lectures because all he does is ramble about the same things over and over again. in my pass/fail response paper based on an hour long video of him, I failed because I went 50 words under the limit. barely based this course on politics and the exams are focused just on movies.
Laziest prof at TMU. Midterm and final tests are multiple-choice in a theory-based class. Half of the classes were spent watching other students' presentations. His lectures are just summaries of the readings. Reads off the slides with no teaching. Assignment guidelines are ambiguous. Group projects are marked by your weakest group member. Avoid.
hes a good prof overall but this course is heavy on memorization for both the movies and slides.
if you are looking for a bird course dont take this unless you are good at memorization.
Grades composed of exams that aren't difficult, an essay marked relatively toughly, & a response paper that is 100% as long as you hand in. Response paper is unnecessary & just annoying but overall I've seen his exams vs the online CHANG ones & his are better considering it's only MC, no short answer, and focuses on films. Good prof not bird course
As long as you're caught up with work you would be good. Lots of memorizing for the exam though
He doesn't touch on things from the textbook during the lecture and assumes you"ll read them yourself. He also makes the exams tough and grades the Major Film Analysis paper super tough without giving much guidance. Horrible Prof.
Given that I took this course as an elective, it sucked. The lectures were not engaging, the assignments were straight forward but he graded them extremely difficult. A benefit is that there's extra credit through surveys (so do them). Other than that, I wouldn't recommend him to anyone.
lectures are barely his own words, if you google three quarters of his slides material is clipped from random articles, think pieces, etc. He claims the ideas as his own, often doesn't cite them. lectures are also horrifically boring.
Took politics and film with him and the actual content is insightful and very interesting if you like film and movies but the way in which he executes his lectures.... god. So boring. He has the attitude of a 13 year old teenager by constantly picking on students and taking everything personally.
Overall, he's there for you if you have any questions and accessible outside of class. His slides are really embarrassing to the point were you cant even study from them since they are filled with paragraphs. I have no problem with boring lectures, but at least be relevant and on point instead of being broad. He also bothers students sometimes. RUN
Bro is so unorganized. Says one thing on rubric but another somewhere else.
His slides were too long in length. Is messy and lectures were repetitive in terms of his speech. It would be better if he made the class more engaging then reading off the slides.
Do not take!!!!!!
Usually dont go out of my way to rate professors but this one had to.
lowkey racist, SO unorganized, and had paragraph powerpoint lectures that repeat the same thing 50 times. was the most stressful part of the semester for a course that shouldn't even be hard. tests require v specific info from the films. slow grader too. textbooks useless bcse all the info is slapped on the ppts anyways so don't bother. have fun!
Tough grader for what? a lower level liberal... awful professor in general pls pick sandra lim instead. all exams are in person and the final was 140 questions with 90 minutes > 38 seconds per question. the assignments are supposed to be grade boosters but he's marking them hard for no reason.
Dr. Moura is an ambiguous man who really likes using overly descriptive jargon in sentences that make it sort of hard to follow. That being said I got an A+ so he marks fair. He is also a nice guy and knows his politics AND film! Wouldn't take again for school purposes but would like to sit down and talk over coffee
Prof. Hudson Moura excels in lectures and explains well in class, but his grading on the 'Major Paper' was tough. Despite being a lower liberal course and writing a detailed 1000+ word essay on a film, his feedback was very critical. If you're not deeply interested in film, you might want to reconsider this course.
Easy midterm, final was long & a bit hard. I surprisingly did well on the major paper so I wouldn't say he's a tough grader. Response paper is easy & boosts your grade. Offers extra credit surveys. He puts time into teaching & is passionate but his lectures are boring. His attitude & sass are inconvenient, but all he wants is respect from students
The professor forces students to work or attend for a total of 12 hours for his conference (that is outside of class hours), and it's worth 20% of your grade. I don't know how he is allowed to do that. Don't take his course there are plenty of other courses you can take.
he's not bad if you take him online. you're just going to have to read a lot and take very precise notes on readings. however, his assignments are graded by completion which is pretty good and his midterms are easy if you copy and paste important details in the assigned readings. i found the course to be quite easy tbh
Prof. Moura was boring and confusing and his lectures reflected that. Lots of work assigned every week but his lectures were posted and he read off of them so I didn't bother going to class. Some interesting material.
Great Prof! Responds to questions quickly and is always willing to help. There was only a midterm, final and paper. Paper and weekly surveys were marked for completion. The lecture slides covered majority of the material, but if you want to do well some questions are straight out of the reading. The content was easy to follow through
Lectures are super boring and will make you fall asleep. But I never read the textbook and got a high mark on both exams. Surveys for completion boost your grade by up to 4%. Criteria for essay was all over the place but he is a fair grader. Content is interesting but a different prof might be easier. Take LOTS of notes if you want to succeed.
Professor Hudson can be a mixed bag - lectures can be dry, but he's knowledgeable and fair with grading. The major paper is tough, so focus on the response papers and extra credit surveys. unstuck ai was a lifesaver for prepping for exams.
The idea of studying politics in film sounds like such a fun concept, until you get Moura as your professor. He lectures with slides that are incredibly information dense, and he adds very little to the information himself. The midterm and final are easy but the final essay will be difficult.
Who in their right mind gives 140 questions in 120 minutes????? That should be illegal! That is less than a minute on each question. Overall, I thought he was okay at first however he is making this class difficult for no reason. Avoid him if you can!
tough grader, 140 questions in 2 hrs is insane especially for an exam, boring lectures
This guy is a waste of the university's resources and the student's time
I enjoyed the engaging lectures, but the grading on the major paper was harsh and didn't match the feedback given. The re-grading process risks lowering marks, so it's not worth it. I expected this to be an easy class, but it was my lowest grade—a mid-70s—despite being a high-90s calculus student. Not recommended as a lower liberal.
The grading on the major paper was harsh. The grading made no sense compared to the feedback given. The course is not supposed to be this difficult. I do not recommend this prof for the liberal. There's another prof which teaches the same course, I advise to take theirs.
You know Hudson your not a bad person, Ill tip my drink to you because you damn right know a lot about politics and film. I thought this was a bird course from reddit, but not with you as the prof, its not that your a difficult prof, your just a difficult person, love hate relationship. Thanks for this class and you'll see me in pol 228.
OMFG HE IS A TOUGH GRADER AND FOR WHATTTT. i don't think I deserved the grade I got for the major paper and the guys feedback didn't make sense? I got a 90% of the final which saved me but it wasn't easy (140 questions). He's lectures are interesting ngl, you'll learn a lot. He's sassy tho lol
AVOID.He thinks his class is so important when most people take it as a liberal. He's a tough grader for no reason. His major paper is the worst assignment I've done so far and the critiques he made on mine make no sense. The midterm and final are okay but the reflection paper is on HIS 45 min presentation. Also,we didn't spend class watching a movie.
You can tell he thinks very highly of himself, the final response paper is an examination of his 46 minutelong boring conference. Lectures are boring, he spends more time reviewing his slides about the movies than actually watching anything. At least he usually ends it early. If it's an elective class pick smt else.
I would not agree with the "tough grader" comments, though my major paper mark was not as high as I expected, the prof gave a fair breakdown of the mark and later gave me full marks for the second paper. Both the midterm and the exam were fairly easy (studied two days in advance and did well),the slides and the posted materials were enough
very tough grader, lots of writing, my lowest grade was an elective (pol128) - but the content is interesting
I did like him as a prof his lectures were interesting but he is a horrible grader I went to 90% of classes watched the films and studied the slides got a 66 for final exam after I almost failed the midterm I dont understand how he grades papers I did really bad on the major paper even tho I followed the rubric exactly and get 90s on most my essays
POL 128 with Hudson was far from the “easy course” everyone claimed. He's immature and thinks highly of himself. During my midterm, my paper went missing, and he made me take the blame, costing me half my time. I barely passed. One assignment was even about a video of him. His ego and unprofessionalism ruined the course.
Lectures are good he is just a tough grader. #JusticeForMoura
clearly takes pride in the education he has received and is therefore passionate. takes the course quite seriously.
I've taken many classes with tough graders before, but I've never encountered such unprofessionalism in a professor's grading. He seems to think very highly of himself, shows little regard for students, and expects graduate-level essays from those who are only taking this course as an elective.
The prof does not teach the course on a good basis. He doesn't teach politics in film. He only plays some films and mention random stuff that he thinks is political. He expects undergrads to write master level essays and gives really bad grades. You get bad grades because of so many unnecessary points. And the midterm and final exam is pretty hard
I've literally never rated a professor on here that's how discouraging and disappointing having this professor has been. Thought it wouldn't be bad since I enjoy film but when I tell you there was nothing enjoyable about this class at all, and there was nothing clear focus at all in the course material. Wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt.
So full of himself it was embarrassing to watch. Tough grader but not impossible. You actually have to understand the content though, so it's not an easy bird course there is some work involved. Worst prof by far imo
I really disliked having prof Hudson Moura, he is a TOUGH grader, doesn't show any enthusiasm in class lectures, and seems like he hates his students. Getting a decent grade in the class is possible if you actually study well for the exams, because the major paper mark will bring you down A LOT. Expect 60s on the paper, coming from a 90s student.
Fun class but the two papers were so confusing and difficult to write. The final exam was super easy tho.
Prof Moura seemed passionate at the start, and lectures were fun! However he began to say less of substance as the semester went on, barely showed any movies, and no one in class participates so its super dead. I got high 90's on the midterm/final, tbh just read the slides.
I'm someone in STEM who is also really passionate about liberal arts; writing, politics, media analysis etc.. I did good on the midterm and final, they were light just read the slides. The major paper is a scam, no matter your skill, passion, effort, he will nitpick and make u wonder what in the world he expected with the analysis.
Very caring professor and always engages with students. This class consisted of a midterm and a final, along with a final paper. His lectures are heavy for the final exam, so make sure to attend. He shows a couple short films and also included surveys for an extra 4% mark boost.
Went in knowing nothing about politics (but love films), got an easy A. Lecture and film heavy, study and watch each major one. Lectures can run boring but he is very knowledgeable in both politics and film. Prefers Google Chat over Gmail to communicate outside class. Two papers (one is completion mark), midterm, and a final. Very nice as well!
He is a very caring professor who gives you many opportunities to earn extra marks. The mid-term and final exams are pretty straightforward; you will be fine if you attend the lecture and read through the slides. Also, he gave away key information about the exam questions through the lecture, so attend the lecture!
I had a great time taking this course with Dr. Moura. It was done asynchronously with lecture video's posted up on a schedule. The course even offered bonus marks for showing up to select few tutorials. The Exams are pretty straightforward with them being online multiple choice based off of lectures and readings from the course. Totally recommend.
Had his class online/asynchronously for summer school, he gave extra credit if you attended 3 tutorials across the semester. This man also literally reopened an assignment submission window for me when I was DAYS past the deadline and I thought that was nice. Exams were easy too, answers were basically all in the lecture slides
online chang school course. it was asynchronous so there were weekly recorded lessons to follow. 3 quizzes and live meetings with the prof before each quiz where he was accessible for support and understanding. Textbook is not required, just for added understanding, however his lectures and the course videos and movies were tested so pay attention.
I really liked him at the start! Did well on the midterm, just read the slides and take the practice tests, however now... He is quite rude and dismissive. He did not change his essay criteria from I'm assuming his last class and only went over it with 2 weeks till the deadline. He seems offended when you ask questions due to his poor explanations.
convulated instructions, no clear goal on any of the work, you will struggle to even begin writing for essays given.
If you actually want to learn this isn't the place for it, this course is very shallow and does not actually give any insight into political discourse, but that makes for an easy class only being marked by 3 things. I also disagree with Hudson on many things, and he gets a good amount of stuff objectively wrong, but he's still fun.
Watching movies during class was always great, and he's a passionate prof. However, his midterm will be super simple, and the answers are obvious. The final will be much more different and difficult and barely about the films he assigned and more about terminology and the readings. He's a difficult marker for essays, so that may tank your grade
