Awesome course. Great professor. Highly recommend.
he's really funny!
Great teacher you will learn alot. Cracks jokes and most of them are funny. Not too hard if you read the chapters and take notes. He make you keep a journal of all the readings.
Always interesting to learn from another culture like his. He is a global person which makes his philosophy course cool. Dynamic person! Easy course
great professor! Fun class & he jokes a lot!!
He may be a little hard to understand at times, but his diverse background and the ways he gets you thinking make him a great professor. The daily "briefings" are a little pointless, but the class is easy and very enjoyable.
Hated the course, all we did was read passages out of the book all day, complete waste of time.
i worked so hard and came away with a b- afer recieving a's on all papers and assignments...not good!!!
Good teacher, lots of reading but it pays of if you take notes and discuss things in class. Funny too.
he sways off topic all the time. the class was a waste of time.
He is the best teacher i had so far. He makes side jokes in class to make class more interesting and to get you thinking. It's better than straight up lectures. It's an entertaining class where you can learn a lot if you participate or just ask questions.
what a waste of time this class is, you're better off taking it online with professor jackson get out while it's still early
Smart guy, has funny stories, but Im not sure if he is that good of a teacher. I think he could have made the class less boring by incorporating something else into the class. His grading is also vague. Our ENTIRE class got B's.
This guy rocks. Watched videos everyday along with some lecture and he tied it all together for us. He even has a sense of humor. Funny guy.
This Professor is cool. Easy to talk to. Time-to-time we see each other on campus and have a little chat
He inturrupts everyone during briefings and then asks everyone to respect him when he calls everyone losers...but the class is pretty easy
He's a pretty easy teacher. He doesn't grade hard at all. Just make sure you always take notes in your journal about each briefing. He had a good sense of humor, you can't take anything he says seriously.
I hated this course! Very unorganized and he is an unfair grader. He has his favorites and it shows. I got A's on all my papers and tests and got a B in the class. He does not like to be questioned. Horrible teacher and class. BEWARE.
A Very informative and entertaining class... I enjoyed it immensely... One of my favorite professors I've ever had...
Very passionate about Environmental Ethics. Class is unpredictable yet very stimulating.
Hugh was pretty easy. If you get less than a B in this class, it's because you don't do enough briefings. He was really passionate about what he taught, too. Good teacher.
This guy is hilarious. Good teacher but rips on those who dont put forth effort. Show up to class, pay half ass attention and get an A.
He's really funny so he keeps the class interesting.
Bad teacher. Tries to make you feel inferior. Picks on you during briefings if you're not well prepared. Be careful!!
Participate! Make sure he knows your name! After all, if he doesn't know you, how is he going to grade you? He is very sarcastic, but just remember, its just sarcasm, so if you want to argue, remember to have valid proof and not just belief. These will get you an A.
Showing up half the time and doing about 5 hours of work for the whole class got me a b! People who showed up more got an A. Very passionate and funny. Remember that he's being sarcastic, though!
THIS DUDE IS SUPER EASY. TALK ABOUT STARBUCKS ALL THE TIME AND JUST DO THE JOURNAL.. JOURNAL IS ALL THERE IS JUST DO THE PAGE YOU ARE ASSIGNED AND TYPE IT THAT'S ALL IT TAKES TO GET YOU THAT A..
I thought i was going to fail this class....but in the end somehow i got a B+! I did the journal and did NONE of the briefings and yet i still got a B+ i dont know how i got it but i did. so in the end he is very easy! but he gets off subject and all he talks about is starbucks.
He is an easy teacher but can be boring at times
One of my favorite professors. Uses satire to make points and makes people participate.
HUGH-GO, this guy is the best... get on his good side and he is going to love you. Activly participate in class, answer his questions even if your wrong he is going to like that you have tryed. He jokes alot but DONT TAKE IT TO HEART
He is a great teacher, funny, and lets you think for yourself/experss your opinions. Then comes back with a reticical statement for you to think about or anser. The best teacher I have ever had. And the class is not even in my major. If you have him as a teacher you should consider yourself lucky.
"Did you say 'you' or 'Hugh'? I can't tell with your southern california accent..." This is the funniest professor I've had and I really learned a lot in his philosophy class. At first he seems hard to handle, but that's just an initial judgement. Stay longer and you'll learn to love him.
Very funny guy, not a class for sensitive people. Easy tests. Clear instructions. You give presentations on readings in the book (very easy). Interesting class. Great class discussions.
Hugh is hilarious. I took him a couple of semesters ago. He is awesome and very sarcastic. If you are sensitive he will puck on you so toughen up and take this class you won't regret it
No Comments
He will argue with anyone and is very sarcastic. But, he really cares about his students. If you're sensitive beware. 5 open book quizzes, 5 class briefings, attendance/participation, journal, and research paper are what he grades on. Learned a lot from his course. Great Teacher highly recommended. Perfect class for anyone thinking about Law School
I was very intimidated by Hugh at first. He turned out to be my favorite teacher and learned SO much from his class, i would take any class that he taught. Take his class if you have the opportunity... and laugh off any of his sarcasm. His humor is classic.
Great teacher, makes you argue your beliefs and consider the others, Very good teacher. Easy class.
Just tell him you practiced proclaiming Jihad and got a snowcone-youll be on his good side. He will make fun of everyone and everything. be light hearted.
Hugh is an awesome teacher, he is very smart and successful, you will hear how he thinks he's better than everyone. He is funny, and likes to make fun of people, i would reccommend taking any class with Hugh
You'll think you don't like him on the first day but really one of the best professors ever. Really religious and political people beware...
Hugh is the****...take any class with him because he just strait up makes fun of all the idiots in class and actually teaches you something worth while unlike every other lame class.

Horrid teaching ability. Doesn't do a darn thing. Makes class teach the book! Gives ALL take home tests so he never has to grade anything. Isn't clear when he gives directions to 'briefings.' When you ask for grades and he doesn't have one written down for you, he assumes what grade he thinks you deserve and that is what you get. makes people cry
I dont think that I've learned anything from his class. He is very interesting to listen to, but it is difficult to connect his points and I never understand what he wants us to learn. But, with that being said: the class is extremley easy and gets you to talk about issues. I'd think of more like a discussion group than anything.
he was scary at first; but turs out he just shows videos and has us do briefings. At the end of semester; there is a journal we have to show him with the video notes, briefings and you have an input on what your grade is.
this is what I call a well educated professor.
Chances are you'll either love him or hate him. He's a pusher, has to have certain things his way. Show him respect & you'll be safe. If you engage him & others in class you'll have more fun & learn more. Class is basically easy, but can be confusing at times regarding exactly what he wants from the students.
likes to make fun of everyone but has pretty easy work load and assignments. also funny as hell sometimes
picks on people a lot! funny at times, and brings up interesting discussion topics. attendance not mandatory. take home quizzes, no tests. final is an open book in class paper. most people get a B. it is hard to connect his discussion topics in class to the material in the book. do the briefings. overall, i think he is a good teacher.
Great teacher, will go out of his way to help you. If you fail ur stupid, because its easy to make up assignments. He really gets you interested in the class discussions, plus he's super easy!!!
one of the best professors i have and will ever had. he is a well educated man who knows what he is talking about. as long as you can reason with him, you'll pass.
He is intimidating at first but it's all in good fun. He is nice but kind of arrogant- so he tends to dismiss those he disagrees with. But the class is easy, so just participate a little and he will like you.
hugh is awesome!! if you cant take a joke, dont take this class, participate in discussions, work load pretty simple, overall fun class and easy professor
The best professor i ever had! and coming from me thats saying alot. easy readings and presentations. makes philosophy easy to understand! tests are easy if read or at least paid attention to what he says which is easy cus hes a ****en crack up. other then that dont get on his bad side. YOU WILL REGRET IT, oh and he never loses a debate. n e v e r
HATE HIM
Very funny. It seemed like he enjoyed his job and his students. Highly recommended.
He is super easy
Off the wall, extremely controversial. He will call you out on your mistakes or for any behavior. He is unusual but very funny if you have half a brain and speak English.
Full of life and experience. He's done quite a bit with himself and that inspires one to want to do more. Classes are always engaging and easy to look forward to. He is perceptive and insightful about his students. The kind of person that knows something about you without anyone having to state that, which he utilizes to help you through his class.
This professor is awesome. He is one of the first that teaches from both sides, and in the end you are left to come to your own conclusions. He doesn't push his political veiws on you like so many other teachers do.
Hugh is a really funny and interesting teacher. He prides himself on his humor and on messing with his students. The class required some reading, little work and lots of discussion. I would take his class again.
The BEST professor I have ever had! He keeps things interesting and there is never a dull moment in class. He is very knowledgeable and incredibly intelligent. Take him!!! You will be impressed, if you have a brain.
although he does have an accent he usually has the students teach the chapters through 'briefings'. homework such as class notes book notes are complied in a 'journal' which is the notebook. pretty good class. all quizes on chapters arent gone over and open book. he likes to tease his students too. be open minded
A horrible teacher. First teacher that I've had that actually encourages cheating. Claims he can do amazing things but never does. I admit he shows both sides of an argument and some interesting discussions but you dont learn anything!! All the ppl I know that took him can't remember anything from his class. If you want to learn, stay away.
Overall a good professor. He gets you to think, and the people who don't get that think that he's a jerk. He likes to crack jokes and has a dry sense of humor. You will need your textbook to do everything in class, the briefings are easy, and he grades easy on the notebook checks. Participate and be assertive and he'll love you and give you A's.
this profess jokes around with the class all the time, makes you laugh to keep interest. but he is not helpful at all, EVER! the class is really easy though. gives atten. pts, make a "journal" - outlining the book - easy, and the final is a paper (gives the prompt ahead of time, lets you write your paper, bring it to class to copy in a blue bk.)
It is sometimes hard to read this teacher. But over all he is a good professor that just wants you to be aware of the things that surround you. As long as you look intrested in class and participate when asked, he will give you a good passing grade.
This is by far the strangest class I have ever taking. There is no grading. Do your class briefings with some intelligence. Don’t use ummm and like. I hardly went to class and really didn’t do anything but I made a really nice journal. Make a nice thick journal make it look like you put some effort into it and you will most likely get an A. I did
I liked the class! I had it at 7:30...get on his good side, if he knows your name, then that's GOOD. very understanding teacher and whilling to help:)
Easy professor but biggest a**hole ever! He thinks he is god's gift to earth and better than everyone.
One of the best teachers I've ever had. He comes off kinda weird at first but if you stick it out it will definitely be worth your time. You will love him in no time.
TEACHER IS THE BEST I HAVE EVER HAD!!! Makes fun of people first few days, but stick with him he is the easiest!! NO TESTS NO QUIZES WHAT SO EVER!!!! I couldn't believe it!! All you do is breifings a sum of the chapter, you only do 5 throughout the semester (just do powerpoint) and keep a journal, people didnt even show up and got an A!!! TAKE HIM!
HATE HIM! He thinks he is God's gift to Earth and talks down on Americans, escpecially Southern Californians. Super liberal and a huge jerk.
Tells everyone to leave their ego at the door, when he brings his in. He has a cynical worldview, thinks he is ****ing hilarious, but his jokes are ****ing stupid. He thinks he's one of the greatest people alive, I think he is an ****.
Horrible horrible horrible!! First few days he embarresses students on their appearance, tardiness, lack of a tissue, yawning, "blondness", or a cross they are wearing around their neck. This man likes to torture students! Do not take him no matter what!
ARROGANT! At times to the point of cruelty. Boastful and over exaggerates. Thinks he's funny, NOT. Learned very little but got an A. Likes Starbucks coffee more than teaching a lecture on the subject. Lot's of Ummmmmmmmmmmm tangents. Probably has a good heart under it all, just gets lost in translation.
funny guy
This professor is very sweet but the first day of class he will scare you to death. Many students wont be back the next day but it is worth staying just dont sit in the front. He jokes when he says you can only go to the bathroom ones. This class is very relaxing and he is very passionate about his subject. There is almost never homework.
This teacher will scare you off for the first day/week, then he starts the class. He gives out information on really wants a person to open their mind, thats really all. No tests or quizes, just a journal of all the notes you took/did in his class, he passes around a paper and asks for a check mark if you are there, EASY, UNIQUE, MATURE CLASS!! +++
Teacher kind of scares the class the first couple days, but after the first week he doesn't really teach much. Each week different students present certain parts of Chapters of the Textbook. It is a very easy class, no test, and the quiz are self graded. All that is due at the end of the semester is notes of each Chapter.
He is really funny. You get used to his humor and if you participate its an easy A. A take home essay final. Make sure to have a good journal to get and A.
He will scare you the first day, but stick with it. It's the easiest A you will get in your college career. Sit in the front row and participate, make sure he knows your name. And if you want to make sure you have an A, give a power point for a briefing to the class. VERY EASY!!!
CHILL DUDE N VERY EASY JUST DONT WAIT THE LAST MIN . TO DO UR NOTEBOOK NOTES , BUT I BARELY WENT N GOT A (B) VERY VEYR EAZY
This guy is pretty mean the first week or two but the class is pretty easy. Keep your journal up to date, participate in class discussions, laugh at his jokes, and find examples for your mini-presentations. No tests. Final is an essay you prepare for and can write beforehand but must handwrite during test day.
This "teacher" is disgusting. He embarrasses his students on the first day, catagorizes people, puts down religion, insults people of great leadership, talks about disgusting vulgar, ****ed things. When he makes inappropriate jokes he tries to justify them by asking us if he was being sarcastic or using satire. He has no point when he teaches.
This guy was awesome. That is if you can take a joke and aren't easily offended. People complain that he is controversial, but he makes you use your head, and thats pretty much the point of his class. Make it past the first week or two and set your cruise control. Loved this class. got and A-
He's a great professor! Very passionate! He picks on students because he likes them. When he calls you out in class its because you made him mad. Have an open mind and PARTICIPATE then you'll get an A in the class!
His teaching style will take some getting use to, but I absolutely loved this class. Go to class, actively participate, take notes and get an easy A.
Great teacher, just has a different teaching style. I will be taking another class with him just for fun and for the easy A!! of course!!
He will challenge you to make you think. If you participate enough so that he knows your name then you will get an A. Great teacher... His teaching style is different but it brings good debate...
This teacher is very intimidating at first but once you get used to his style and criticism class is fun. He goes off into discussions about things not related to class but it makes it interesting. You will be very clueless on what he expects just a journal/notes types, a few presentations, and a final which is a essay prompt he gives you before.
Will make you think about both sides of environmental issues. Come with an open mind and you will learn. Does not follow syllabus. You will be confused about requirements. Type your notes throughout the semester, raise your hand a couple of times, give good presentations and final time will be much easier.Look closely at the binder example he shows
he makes you think about yourself and the world. he is more or less a liar; changes his position on subjects. makes fun of students (mostly blondes). dont say um. once he doesnt like you, he'll pick on you forever. if youre on his goodside, you'll find him inspiring. doesn't make expectations clear. wont assign something, but will hold you to it.
You need the book. Pretend to take notes, or take them, but he won't collect them. He does collect Journals on the day of the final, put effort into those. Do work on the presentations, try and impress him early on and class will be easier for you. First impression will be very intimidating but does not stay that way. Don't be scared of him.
Whatever you do, don't say "um" in his class.
Pretty much thinks that he is a God among men. Dresses nicely and will criticize you if you don't (don't wear black!). Awesome teacher that will make you think about life. Always have your book with you, as you will always be needing it. Make yourself comfortable and do more presentations than required for an easy "A".
He constantly belittles students. The class is pretty easy. Just do your readings and briefings and you'll be fine. Final is easy (he gives you the prompt and allows you to use notes). If you are not offended easily, its a good, easy class. Don't yawn or say "um" in class. You'll never hear the end of it!
Good professor. Lectures can get boring, go to class and participate and you will get a good grade. The final is based off of the midterm and he gives you feedback on how to get a better grade.Very funny and has strong accent.
Afshari seems like a harsh teacher, but he really wants you to pass and his class is relatively easy.
He is a hypocrite. He will lecture about how Americans can not properly pronounce his beloved homeland of Iran correctly, but then not be able to say San Marcos or San Diego using correct Spanish diction.
One of my favorite teachers of all time. His teaching is very unortodox, which I like, but if you are the kind of student who just wants to go to class an get the work done to get an A, take another class. I can't believe people on here said his lectures are boring! His lectures are on some of the most important intellectual topics of our time.
he is very imtimidating on the 1st day of class but once you have a one on one talk he is really cool and easy going class was very intersting if you do all your briefings you are guaranteed an A...oh and do not dare say ummm in his class!
Cares about what he's teaching, but watch out, he believes hes God. Just sit back, shut up, and keep your eyes open. ask an occasional question, and be sure to communicate with him! stressful class, but easy.
Teacher harasses students constantly. He starts conflicts and then ultimately makes personal attacks on the student when they prove him wrong. He believes he is better than anyone in his classroom. In his classroom he acts as the judge, jury and executioner which he thinks supersedes cal state San Marco's teaching policies. BAD TEACHER.
Afshari is awesome. He can definitely be offensive if you take him too seriously, but overall he's a really cool guy. If you communicate with him and ask for help he'll show an interest in you a) as an individual b) as a student. I really enjoyed his class, got a great grade and always was laughing about something.
Brilliant guy but intimidating the first day of class. He is not afraid to pick on students who aren't taking notes, who yawn with their mouths open, or anything else that he thinks is ridiculous. So pay attention if you don't want to get picked on! Do all the work and at least 3-4 briefings if you want an A. I did only 1 briefing and got a B.
Professor Afshari is awesome, seems a little scary at first but its more of a cultural difference than anything. If you come to class there is no reason you won't learn and get an A.
He is very intimidating, he picks on everyone in class. When students provide a counter argument or prove him wrong, he ends up attacking the student. He tries to make everyone feel dumb to make himself appear smarter, when he should really fix his spelling and learn to speak proper english
He is an intimidating guy, especially at the beginning of the semester, provide visuals for your presentations. Keep up with your journal, 4 videos, 4 presentations (exercises are easier than briefings), the final essay is worth a lot. He told me i have an A i just hope its true!
This teacher sucks HARDCORE. He's hard to understand, does not give clear feedback nor does he explain the assignments well. He's can be a bit arrogant at times and tells bad jokes. Student breifings, journal, film notes and attendance is super important. Overall an interesting subject and somewhat easy class taught by a bad teacher :(
he is a very smart guy. he gets you to think about things at every angle. you have to turn in a notebook but as long as it looks semi complete you'll be fine. he seems confussing in the the beginning but it really is an easy class. just make sure to show up and take notes. two presentations and a notebook is your grade. no tests.
Rude, confusing, hypocritical. I generally understood his agenda through his ramblings - to get us to be more active citizens and think for ourselves, but he created an uncomfortable classroom environment and then expected us to have discussion! Awful. Stay away.
Easy professor, people think he's picking on them when he's really not! He's providing a potential counter argument for the student to disprove with their theory. Easy professor to work with, fun to talk to outside of class, easy A if you do your journal.
I like this guy, i really do, but he lied about his status to our entire class. he said he had 3 doctorates (he has a masters degree), he said he is a tenured staff here (he was an adjunct), and he always talks about having it so hard growing up, which may or may not be true, he is a cool guy, but dont believe everything he says w/o backing it up.
he seems mean at first when he is talking to the whole class but one on one he is super polite. he makes fun of kids in the class its funny. just do APA in everything you turn in and you will get an easy A
All I can say is avoid if at all possible. He is rude and enjoys embarrassing people. He says we need to treat each other and the planet better, yet he likes to yell at people in front of the whole class for things like not covering their mouths when they yawn. he's a horrible guy, really. smart, but horrible. the easy A isn't worth it.
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROF. He does not stick to his syllabus at all, he rambles about whatever he wants. He NEVER reads student work, just pretends to look at it and will randomly give you between 85-100. He is rude and belittling to students. Totally unclear and expects you to use APA when he has no idea what APA is. Easy A-, but NOT WORTH IT!
I can't say enough BAD things about this guy. He should NOT be teaching. He is rude, rambles about things not in the syllabus, grades completely arbitrarily, and is simply not worth the stress. You can get a good grade pretty easily but that's part of his trap to make sure students do not complain about him. DO NOT BE FOOLED, RUN FROM THIS CLASS!
He is an absolutely awful professor. He rambles about things completely unrelated to the course material and thinks he is better than everyone. I was always unprepared for class even though I showed up all the time. He would say something is due, then he'd change his mind. He embarrasses students and is just rude and left me totally uninterested.
I would not at all recommend taking this prof. He is very unclear about everything. The final has absolutely nothing to do with anything learned throughout the semester. If you yawn in class, expect to be ridiculed. The class is an easy A only because he doesn't look at any of your work. Constantly rambles about his hard life. Don't take this prof.
This was one of the most interesting classes I?ve taken so far at CSUSM. Getting an A in this class is simple if you participate and do what?s required he?s willing to help you if you ask for it. He looks tough but he is very kind and understanding.
He is a good teacher. Interesting, but is VERY unclear on what he wants.
Attendance not mandatory, he does not even lecture on the readings, he tells his life stories. Do the papers, he lets you turn them in late. Take the online quizzes. Seemed like he didn't even read my papers. Do the work and get at least a B.
pretty cool guy once you get to know him. he says some questionable stuff, but if you just keep your head down and work it will be good. work hard and you will do good, its really just like any other class. can be unclear at times, but if you ask him personally he will clear things up for you. good professor.
Many will hate this professor but it takes understanding and time to figure out what pleases him. He is a very confusing professor. Not recommended for students who plan to be lazy.
Not an easy A, but it is pretty easy to receive a B if all his requirements are met. Tries to scare people, but don't be so intimidated the first day. Quizzes are hard, but he gives mostly everyone Bs in assignments :)
This class is way too easy. not a complete walk in the park but it does tend to get too boring. as long as the papers he asks for are done hes all good with it. the first day he does make it seem as though he will be the toughest out there but he really isnt at all. that class is the same routine every week read notes video. point less to attend :)
Afshari is the worst professor ive had so far. his class is really boring you will learn more from the book than him any day. he likes telling stories about his life ALL the time. day one he will make it seem like hes really tough, but hes not its easy to pass.
if you are well organized and do the readings, you should manage fine. he goes off on tangents most of the time, and makes you watch films to supplement the material. 2 presentations, one group. keep your journal typed and up to date and it's an easy A. i got sick in the middle of the semester, and he was very accommodating.
Worst class I have had so far.. never looked forward to going because he is the biggest ****ter. Acts like he is a god, and can be very nice and takes a while to understand him, but is a terrible class and doesn't make any sense or follow the syllabus. In the end, do your summaries and papers and you will be fine. Just be prepared..
Did not like this class since the first day. It's pretty routine. Chapter summaries and video reviews every week. videos are long and BORING. When he lectured, he went to his own little world and made it seem like his life related to the material.I would not recomend him. Take psyc 110 or another class if you're doing it as a GE requirement
awesome teacher but you have to get used to him. tries to be intimidating but really isnt. try not to stand out too much or he will pick on you. easy class and interesting stories from him.
Easy class. I read the comments on here and I was affraid but its 3 short essays every week(group discussion, chapter summary, and video summary)...just bs them. 1-2 pgs then a quiz every week. Compared to the other classes my friends took this was the least work.
Great teacher.. Perfect professor to teach Phil. Got lost in crazy stories he tells . Easy class just do all the work he assigns and you will get an A
Tries to scare you off in first couple weeks with a crazy workload and a syllabus that is not clear at all. All work is collected at end of year with an average 3 assignments a week. Okay if you do your work and participate but thinks he is the best person in the world and nobody else matters. Hard to understand at times and has a lot life stories
He's a pretty cool teacher if you like listening to stories. Journal entries stack up if you don't do them, but they are easy to catch up on. Going to class reminds me of going to church in that pretty much, he just preaches the whole time and goes over too. At first, the class will seem confusing but you get the hang of it at the end.
At first I was intemidated by him, he constantly puts people down. After a few weeks you get used to his 2 hour long rants that have nothing to do with class. The work is easy but he is unclear about what he wants. I would suggest not taking his class I did all of the work and showed up to every class prepared and participated he gave me a C
Terrible teacher, very unclear, the class is less about philosophy and more about him complaining about anything and everything. Take it with another professor if at all possible!
Many students from his classes dislike him and he often doesn't make much sense, but it isn't hard, just do the work. If you show up to class and seem interested by trying to participate and actively listening, he'll appreciate your effort (I was stopped by him in the hallway and thanked for my active participation). ALWAYS, ALWAYS ASK QUESTIONS!!
VERY rude. has no respect for anyone except himself. needs to learn how to treat people.
Many students don't find him helpful or a good professor. I found his teachings very informative and he was willing to guide you in the right direction if you needed help. Most people take the class because they thought it would be easy and not need to show up. If you show up, read and participate you will do great in the class.
This professor is a really strange but super interesting. I truly enjoyed the class. The only problem is that his grading is very difficult to understand.
He can be ude but easy. You just got to do his work or you will fal behnd. has some interesting stories
You read a chapter of the textbook and write about 1,000 words per week. Simple class, show up, keep up with the work, and you'll get an A.
Very good teacher, hard to understand but it is an easy class. Keep up with the assignments and make sure you are there every class because he takes attendance and it can really affect your grade.
He's a great teacher. I learned a lot from the class. I like that we can discuss things and still be respectful about other people's opinion. Just do the readings because he loves class discussion. His final was easy, the grammar didnt even matter.
At first I thought professor Afshari was kinda rude but then as time went along, I understood that he only wanted students to be prepared for the material in class. The work is not hard just do it and you'll do fine in class. As a person, he's really chill, polite and straightforward and make sure you are on his good side.
he is very interesting and funny he is helpfull aslong as you do the work you will pas the class
EASY TO GET AN A!! short term paper worth 100 points. final paper worth a 100. and online quizzes 10 points each based off of the weekly chapter reading. chapter summary and group discussions every week and at the end you turn them in in a binder. easy 100 right there. he takes attendance. would def recommend if you want that easy A.
At first I didn't like Hugh at all! He was rude and confusing. However, after a while I got the hang of the class. Lectures are confusing and don't make sense, but attendance was mandatory so I went. A lot of writing but he NEVER checks it, as long as you have APA format you are good, book is necessary. Midterm and final are essays.
Overall, he is a good teacher. The class is not hard. Just participate. He acts super mean and strict the first week or so, but he really is not bad. Read the book ahead of time and take part in discussions so that the final will be easy.
EASIEST TEACHER BY FAR. hard to understand but the work is SUPER SUPER simple
He seems strict at first but he's an awesome teacher. Just do all of the work and you'll get a good grade
He seems strict at first but he not he's a good professor. Midterm is easy its a group paper not to bad. Every week you have to do a chapter summery APA format 300-500 word, and quiz on online open for two days Friday and Saturday. Just have to keep up with the summery and quizzes.
I loved Prof. Afshari, I definitely recommend taking him. At first, he comes off as rude, but he isn't. He cares about his students, and he wants them to pass his class. Do your work, and you'll pass with no problem. He often shares personal stories with the class, but it's just so we can understand the material better, and relate to it.
not bad
At first it seems like a difficult class but it actually isnt too bad. He does have an accent that occassionally makes it difficult to understand what he is saying but for the most part everything he says is clear. Do the work and be sure to take the online quizzes. There is not that much homework and all his assignments have to do with the reading
Hugh is hilarious! However, the class is a bit boring. I was very interested in the subject prior to taking the class, but my interest level went down quickly. The entire class revolves around the textbook, which was really boring. The class discussions were the only interesting parts of the class.
Professor Afshari at first seem intimidating . He will put you in the spot if your late. He is hilarious and nice man. Just show up for class, do the reading and youll pass.
Afshari genuinely cares about his students. Happy to help & grade your assignments on the spot if you ask. Class is textbook based, which made it boring at times. Ch. Sum. & Group Exercise (response) each week, each 250 wds min. Group midterm paper on Meno & Final on Phaedo. He loves to pick on people for "Uhs" & "Uhms" so don't take it personally.
Quizzes galore. Trick quizzes, one of those one answer is more correct than the other kind of BS. Weekly journals and group discussions. I like him, I guess but I would never ever take this class again. EVER. I think every absence after 3 is a half a letter grade.
great professor, the first week or so he comes off really mean and seems very strict. He is actually really nice though and super funny. You will have 2 assignments a week and one quiz every friday (online) if you stay on top of the work its fine. its just a lot of busy work but its easy. take him.
Book is mandatory and so is attendance. He gives two assignments per week and doesn't collect them until the end of the semester. Not too tough of a grader and in order for you to understand the topic of the week, he gives you a personal story. Great professor!
One of the most understanding and nice teachers ever. He is very easy going and is always there to help you if you need clarification or to better understand the concepts. His instructions are very clear and he has you engage in group participation activities. Be prepared to speak out in class and have class presentations. Really easy though.
Listen to everything he says and do it and you will be fine. Always get the homework done and you won't have to face the embarrassment of not knowing what is going on. Be professional when you are answering questions. He can be really nice and cool if you do what he says and cooperate but if you make him mad , he will get very mad.
One of my favorite Professors so far! While the class can get boring for time to time, he is such an amazing guy. He tries to make something as boring as philosophy fun. If you need to take a philosophy class, TAKE HIS!
Very boring. It is an easy A though. All you have to do is write your chapter summaries/group discussion questions & take the online quizzes at home each week & you will be fine. I never really knew what was going on in the class, his instructions aren't that clear. There is a group essay for the midterm (easy) & the final was an in class essay
Veeeery easy professor. Lectures are confusing mainly because they are so scattered and pointless. He really expects participation though and will get mad if no one is participating. Only have to write 2 pages a week and he grades them at the end of the semester. Also, the midterm and final are group projects. He is a very easy grader and nice guy!
really great professor super easy as long as you do your weekly summaries, group excise and online test every week. really easy to get an A in his class he's really nice and willing to help. He can be unclear sometimes but every week the same 3 assignments are due so as long as you do them you'll pass even if you have no idea whats going on.
Take this class. Easy A. Period. Nice guy. Homework answers are online.
DON'T DROP THE FIRST DAY. He puts on an act to scare people, he's completely different the second day. He's humorous and nice. This class was tedious, but it's easy busy work. His midterm/final essays are annoying but do-able if you are on track. Don't expect to learn much about critical thinking as his personal stories/examples don't correlate
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR! he's really cool and funny as long as you do your weekly summaries and group summaries you'll be fine the quizzes are online and the answers or online too and the midterm is a group project and the final is open book.
Hugh is honestly a very inspiring professor. He expects what other professors would expect and that is your attention, and your dedication to his class. People dropped the first day because they thought he was too strict or gave so much homework, but the homework in the class is not hard. Weekly summaries and a group paper. TAKE THIS CLASS
He is very "Gucci" and does not waste time. He is extremely funny and outgoing. Usually is in a great mood and tells lots of interesting stories about himself. Just do your chapter and group summaries and show up for the credit!
I enjoyed having him as my professor. His class is super easy. All you have to do is the chapter summaries and group exercise. He is very good at explaining the chapter and he keeps the class interesting. Also, the midterm was not hard at all and neither was the final, so long as you read the book.
This class was awesome! If I am being honest I did not even want to take philosophy, I had no interest in it but solely took it to fit a GE requirement. After being in a class with Prof Afshari he made me love the class! The first day of class he is very intimidating but its all an act. Best Professor on campus! Easiest A.
Not very interesting, always talks about his life, but it is an easy class along as you STAY ON TOP of summaries, and group exercises (they are weekly things).
The classwork can be extremely tedious + involves a great deal of writing. You do a presentation at least twice a week, but only have to read small portions of chapters in the textbook + 2 of Plato's dialogues. The professor's voice can be hard to follow at times (thick accent), but he's respectful and tells good jokes sometimes. Groupwork-based
nice guy, willing to help, responds to e-mails. Class was an easy A as long as you do your work. quizzes every week online not to hard if you skim through the chapter. You have to write up summaries every week. lectures arent every helpful.
Although his lectures were not the most exciting, he is a great professor and a passing grade is guaranteed, as long as you show up everyday. Homework is the same every week and online quizzes every weekend, but are very easy.
If you do all the work and show up, you will get an A. Just be aware that he does not allow anyone messing around. He will drop students who don't do there work or or respect him. Easiest A I have ever gotten, just have to do the weekly writings, essays, and presentations.
Overall it's an easy class.
This man is a trip. Makes the same jokes every class, but for some reason its funny. He doesnt tolerate anyone messin around. Hes like a strict dad who only likes his kids but still yells at his kids (us). The homework is straight forward. Easy A, but his class can be a pain if you do not like typing. Buy the book, youll need it. I like him, kinda.
He seems really mean at first, but it gets better after a few weeks. After that, he's kinda funny and starts liking you. Be sure to the get the book before the semester starts! The workload is easy and repetitive. It's an easy A as long as you show up and do the work.
He tries to scare you off the first day of class but he's hilarious and not too bad. You have a group presentation and quiz each weak, but it's not difficult. He lectures and likes to sprinkle in some jokes which keeps the class going and interesting. Overall, just do what is expected and participate and you should be fine.
Great professor, dont get discouraged on the first day because he purposely is scary but after the first week he isn't like that at all. The readings aren't hard at all and as long as you do your work you'll get an A.
One of the most inspirational people I've ever met in my life. If he is still alive today and you take him for critical thinking 101 I'm sure it was brutal. But if you take his environmental 300 philosophy class you will be absolutely inspired he's a wonderful human being. -2013
The class is time consuming, but as long as you do your papers week by week, you will pass the class with an A. He seems strict at first, but you'll see that he's actually funny and rewards you for good performance. He gave me money to buy the class chocolates because everybody wrote good papers. Don't be intimidated by him in the first day.
Professor Afshari is beyond amazing! He will act tough and scary the first day, trying to scare students off, but he is nothing like that the rest of the semester. Keep up with weekly chapter summaries and group exercises. Easy A!
Boy was he intimidating at first, at one point I got scared of he's class on the way he acted. But he's great and does care for he's students, he will also bring up things about he's past making it more enjoyable. Just beware that you do have to read and participate for he's class every time. So try your best not to be shy.
If you're super shy don't take this class because there are weekly five minute presentations and weekly group presentations. Otherwise, as long as you keep up with the chapter summaries every week, it is a super easy A. Also, I enjoyed his personal stories, and attending class is mandatory because you do get points!
lots of writing but its a real easy class, quizzes are pretty hard especially if you don't read
Professor Ashanti is a sweet older man if you have any questions just ask him. As long as you do work which is a chapter summary, discussion, and quiz each week you'll be okay.
this is from the 2020 online class and HONESTLY, his class is so easy. Just make sure to do the summaries which are due every Monday and Wed. the discussion form. There are pop quizzes every Friday and it supper easy. It just a critical thinking class. easy pass in this class.
You will be teaching yourself everything, the workload is so heavy and he is not sensitive or empathetic AT ALL through the COVID-19 pandemic. I got evicted twice and got the virus and he did not care and was really passive-aggressive about it implying I was lying. I bet he knows his stuff but would not recommend taking the class during these times
Professor Afshari is one of my favorite teachers, since attending college. I have taken his course during the fall of 2019 as a freshman. There are multiple assignments given out each week and be prepared to present once or twice a week. In the end, this class helps improve your thinking skills and communication skills.
This class has weekly chapter summaries for the textbook but I'm convinced he doesn't actually read them. He usually grades everything shortly after submission for full points (for the most part). He clearly states what he wants for his assignments and the quizzes are usually questions directly related to the textbook.
Professor Afshari is extremely disrespectful and condescending. I was in his class for about a week and got dropped from the class for inactivity even though I was doing the work. When I met with him to ask why I was dropped, he said that him dropping me was my problem and that he dropped me to get students who were willing to do work Dont wyt
I definitely won't say he was the worst, but his class was definitely very confusing. Typically, you get a chapter summary, discussion post and a quiz per week. In my opinion, the chapter summaries and discussions were never a problem for me, but the quizzes were the absolute worst. The highest I've gotten was an 8/10. His lectures are alright tho.
We would have a weekly discussion, chapter summary, and quiz. The discussions, and summaries were fairly easy, but the quizzes are hard. He talks down to students and wants to make you feel like you should show the up most respect to him. His lectures were pointless if you never went to a lecture but did the homework you would learn the same amount
Superior mind. Spent 3 years under his tutelage. The best inspirational professor I have studied under. Prepare for challenge. Tom Fox Park/Camp Pendleton.
There is lots of homework, weekly, quizzes, discussion boards, and chapter summaries. Expect to write almost 2000 words per week. Discussion boards in chapter summaries are not difficult they just take a lot of time. Chapter quizzes can be difficult, but they are taken online. lots of busy work
Textbook can be found online free, 2nd required reading is cheap and short. It looks intimidating at first but the assignments are the same every week, and are not graded harshly as long as u follow the criteria. If you need help definitely ask in person instead of email even if it's scary. Get an attendance buddy.
Overall good professor. If you absolutely need to miss class just make sure to email him, he's super understanding. Reading can be heavy, and note that the online textbook does not have page numbers. Prepare to write about 1400 words a week with a Friday quiz online. Seems like a lot at first but it is easy to get used to.
Prof. Afshari can come off as disrespectful to students at times. If you pay attention in class and turn in your three assignments every week, you will pass. If you participate in class and read the material, you can learn a great deal. In summary, high workload for a 100-level course and good but old school professor.
Clear structure of the course: 1 chapter summary, 1 discussion post, and 1 mini quiz a week (Mon, Wed, Fri). Understanding man and relatively easy grader. Highly recommend taking him to fill your critical thinking requirement. Some controversial opinions, but just be quiet and respectful and you'll be good to go.
Easy grader, the only way you won't get an A is by missing assignments. Lectures are kind of pointless and boring, he goes over everything you read for the homework. Kind of strict and mean, but he is a funny professor. Three assignments a week, and then a collection of essays for midterm/final. Attendance is taken in every class.
Thinks & speaks very poorly of students. He would ask the class to take out their laptops & then get upset that they have their laptops out, he got upset at a student for eating, being on their phone, taking notes, etc. He was very accusatory & told the students that they were stuck in high school age when not one person was being disruptive.
At first, I didn't think he was nice but over time he grew on me. I guess he likes to pick on people as a joke. Try not to take it personally. Do not look at your phone or laptop when he is talking or playing a film on the projector, you will get called out. Follow along as the class reads aloud
Although there was a lot of homework, I'd say he was a good teacher. He lectures really good but will pick on you if you wear something funny. Attendance is mandatory but it's an easy class, all you do is the same things every week. Monday is lecture and reading, Wednesday is group project, Friday is a chill day, he just talks about controversy.
He can be rude a lot of times, but just make sure you're understanding what's happening in the class and be prepared for class and he won't pick on you.
Prof. Afshari can be blunt, but engaging with his system pays off. Attend class, complete weekly assignments, and use resources like unstuck study AI to succeed. Overall, a challenging but rewarding course.
Show up, pay attention, don't go on your phone or he will call you out. If he calls you out you're cooked because he doesn't know when to stop talking. 3 simple assignments every week just turn them in on time or he will give you 50%. If you just need credit, it's a free grade just do your thing. 1 presentation a week. PARTICIPATION MATTERS SHOW UP
In the beginning of the year he seems intimidating, but you'll realize it's only cause he's strict on people paying attention to when he is lecturing and not on their phones. He grades really easy online and is eventually lenient on missing work, besides quizzes. Easy class if you pay attention and are up to date!
Worst teacher I have ever had in my life. However, his class is easy, only three assignments a week which was the only upside. Besides that, he is very racist says the most out of pocket things and is very strict on attendance. My mother passed away, and he told me it wasn't a good enough excuse for not showing up to class. Never again.
Uses intimidation tactics and disrespectful tactics to try and get you to "do what you are told". Told us we are being institutionalized.
This professor tried to make fun of me in front of the whole entire class and would pick on me but no one laughed so he probably humiliated HIMSELF. He has mental issues and needs therapy because he made a hostile learning environment and constantly forced me to cover my mouth while YAWNING. Avoid.
Professor Afshari is not the most approachable man, he can come off rude and inconsiderate at times. But he's not a bad teacher, he's just mean. The assignments are not hard at all so as long as you do them on time and show up to class you should do good.
He enjoys making fun of his students. Attendance and participation is very important. He doesn't care about the reason of why you skipped class. NO phones, he enjoys calling people out for that. He also likes to call out people talking and will ask you to go outside to do so. Work in class is easy but he is miserable. Do not recommend.
He just wasn't the greatest person and seemed pretty combative. But I guess he had some kinda funny + redeeming moments throughout the semester. He will try to scare you into dropping but his class is so easy i swear. it is SO MUCH work but i doubt he looks it over after the first month and if you do it he'll give you full points, easy grader
He will try to be hard at the beginning of the semester to get people to quit. Does pick on some people, but not bad. Material is easy, do the 3 assignments a week on time, and you are set up for success. There are oral presentations every Monday though, short. Speak clearly and you'll do just fine. I actually enjoyed his philosophy lectures too.
professor hugh was the best professor ive had thus far. he perceives himself to be scary the first few days of the semester to scare off students who dont try. he is truly a really good professor, and the readings/writing are easy to complete. attendance is mandatory. ignore the bad reviews, most of them are lazy students who dont want to commit
Intentionally scary first few days, relaxes after a bit Ungraded oral presentation Mondays, Canvas Discussion Posts Wednesdays, Canvas Quiz Fridays Midterm / Final are Essay's on Greek stuff not tests, easy to do. you can show up late but you NEED to show up. You'll need to get the book, I was able to find a pdf online. NO phones in class.
The first week or so will seem pretty intimidating, he is just trying to scare people off. DONT DROP THE CLASS! He's actually a pretty funny guy and his way of thinking is pretty interesting. That being said, do not use your phone at all during class, show up, turn in the 3 assignments (he doesn't read them) and you'll do pretty well
On the first day as a freshman, I handed him my DSS papers before class due to his request. Though he didn't like how I filled it out, he screamed at me and shamed me, saying I will forever fail in life and that he is going to make me cry. The rest of the class, he yelled at me, then talked about how awesome he is. I dropped right after I left.
Class is easy with a lot of writting, 2 writting assigments each week and a test. The professor in the other hand is a diffcult person, probably the worst i had so far. He screams at you, point you out for nothing, call you mediocre and entitled himself a lot. Not much an understanding man or approachable to talk
Most disrespectful person ever. Made 5 students cry on the first day of class screaming in peoples faces and humiliates everyone constantly reminding them how much he has been through and why he is so superior to everyone around him. Please drop his class and report to the university, as most teenagers taking him are 17 or 18 year old first years.
pretty cool, slight accent, def talk to after class
I had him for PHIL. Thick accent, he's not very understanding, pretty easy grader tho, about 3 assignments every week, 2 writing & 1 quiz. As long as you do all the work ON TIME you'll be fine. At first he does seem intimidating and kind of rude/blunt, but he can be funny sometimes. Be prepared for his class.
At first Professor Hugh seems very rude which caused a lot of people to drop the class. But as the semester went on, you grow to like him. His grading is insanely essay you have to do a chapter summary very week but its essay. Overall, good teacher just be respectful towards him and he'll give you the same respect back.
