Great teacher. He is a very compassionate teacher. He has a very different process of teaching but as long as you communicate with him you will learn to find the class interesting. The class teaches you a lot more about writing then just English and grammar and structure. He teaches you how to become a good writer and get your ideas down.

Teacher is great always returns emails and loves what he does. If you are looking for a easy A look elsewhere he actually teaches you unlike some teachers. his methods are a little different but he is the greatest teacher if you really want to move forward

Great teacher. Was not looking forward to his class for the first two or three weeks. but then everything clicked and he helped a lot though out the class. If you don't like his teaching style give it time and look at it from another view.

His class is not easy, but he wants you to learn. If you are having any problems he is more than willing to help you one on one. Great professor!

Was my favorite teacher of the semester. If you work for your grade you get an A. If you do exactly the minimum you receive a C. I highly suggest taking him.

I am not very good in English and have always struggled but Professor Hugh Culik changed this for me. He was a very understanding person and willing to take the extra time to help his students. He made me feel confident about my work and clerified any misunderstanding that I had. He is a GREAT guy! He seems tough at first but he is easy going!

If you really want to improve your writing skills, take him. Attendance is mandatory, as well as class participation. If you do your work, participate, and show up, you will do just fine. Do not buy the book, you will not use it once! Professor Culik is a very fair professor and I would recommend taking him if you enjoy writing!

I highly recommend him if you need english 1190 credit because the class is not that hard and he is a great professor. Also the process he makes you do is very helpful for his class and other writing courses.

Hugh is probably the best professor I've ever had. His class really challenged me, but it was worth it. He teaches things applicable to real-life situations, and he was also very prompt in responding to emails/returning calls when help was needed. I'd definitely recommend taking his class.

great teacher, he is always available for any questions. He was my 1st class back at college and I loved it. he makes you think and his way of writing really works if you give it a shot.

Awesome Professor, once you get used to his unique style for writing paper, you understand how helpful the TAQ sheets and P&P sheets are. Very interesting, and nice professor. Just make sure you do the work or you WILL fall behind.

Hugh is a teacher that wants to teach his students the correct way of writing and thinking,so they are able to be functioning adults. The problem is not him, its that most people in his class have no desire to be a adult yet. His expectations are clear, he grades above fair and he is always open to communicate with.

I have never met such an amazing professor. Throughout the course you must write 5 papers which are simple and you have a lot of time to finish. If you ever have any questions he will always help you until you understand. He actually likes when people ask questions and participate in class discussions. Highly recommend!

At first this class may seem hard. Just give if time. I must say this is a GREAT professor. I hate writing papers but I feel like I've became a better writer because of this class.

Professor Culik makes you think in a whole new way. Be prepared to work hard and get things in on time even or you can easily get behind. Great person and teacher. I was blessed to have him. Must attend class unless you have extreme situation talk with him privately if you need help or time . He really wants everyone to succeed.

Honestly, this guy is a miracle. He made me a great writer by criticizing my work, in a helpful way. I had an emergency and had to miss a lot of class, he let me work from home essentially. Extremely understanding and can hold a good conversation with you regarding ANYTHING. Only 5 papers, 2 homework assignments each, did not take long to complete.

In the beginning I thought I was screwed. But then I hung on and it was easy. You will be amazing at writing by the end of the semester. I'll admit you have a lot of work, but it's worth it. He is completely understanding and such a nice professor. EASY GRADER so don't be fooled. So nice really. You will learn lots

Hugh is one of the best professors I've ever had. At the beginning of the semester I was a little scared but it turned out to be my favorite class. HE is very understanding and is willing to work with you if your serious about your work. Make sure you participate in class complete all your papers and come to class on time and you'll be fine.

Teacher Hugh is a great teacher.I am foreigner. He understand and respect other country's culture. He encourages students to learn more and think more. He would like to discuss with students. Professor Hugh is an awesome teacher. He takes time with you to understand where you and your paper is coming from. Take him because he gives you a clear perspective of what English is all about. Makes you work for it and you will be glad you did. You get so much out of this class, at first I didn't think I was going to, but its well worth it.

Everyone loves Hugh!! He is a great professor and everyone should take him for 1190. He teaches outside the box and will prepare you for college level writing.

He wants you to actual know what he has taught you. He gives zero tests. You have only 3 absences, and if you don't talk 3 times each class it counts as an absences. talking was natural, His class is so chill, stress free and enjoyable. Also he doesn't even use a textbook he has his own website with all the assignments, tools, help, and more. 10-10

Before I took this class I could not write if my life depended on it, and now I feel like I am very good at it thanks to him. He is very understanding, and helpful. Super understanding and caring. Handwriting is hard to read during notes. Gives good topics to write about and I would highly recommend him to anyone. He is super hard on everyone the first few weeks so make sure you pay attention, participate and get your work done. Probably the best English teacher at Macomb.

Professor Culik is the best professor. I took him last winter for English 1190. He is an AMAZING professor. I learned so much from him. Professor Culik truly teaches you how to write and think in a professional matter. Professor Culik is also very helpful to students who participate and show effort.

Professor Culik was a wonderful professor. He may seem tough from the beginning but it is just to scare away the students who don't want to work for their A. He grades you on IMPROVEMENT. I got a 21% on my first paper, and i didn't turn in my second paper and my final paper of four was an A paper, and I got an A in the class.. must talk three times

Professor Culik will make you question everything you know about writing. This is a core class that will improve your writing. I feel most of students failed this class, he teaches you like an adult and you will learn a lot if you put in the effort.

Prof. Culik was one of the best teachers I've had! Amazing. Truly cares about our success and although this is only a writing class he would share things with us that broadened my scope of thinking. Wish he taught communications 2.

He was by far my favorite professor ever. At first, he is very intimidating. He cares about all of his students. He accepts all differences. This professor helped me on almost every single paper we had to write. He is a easy grader if you know what you are doing. I took this professor twice and got an A both times.

Macomb needs more profs like Culik. Reading & Writing Studio is also helpful with brainstorming and assignment instructions/expectations for his essays.

English is NOT my strong suite.... but he makes the class as enjoyable as English can be. (trust me I had no interest in English before this) he is very strict with attendance. 3 absences and you fail. Don't take if you like to skip! He is serious about the absence thing. He even failed his son because of it!! Very interesting professor though!

Dont let these reviews trick you. If you don't agree with his liberal views on politics, do not take this class. Half of the class he talks about politics, (which has little to do with the class) then does a mediocre job of explaining the assignments. Assigns so much busy work. I do not recommend!

Mr. Culik is a phenomenal teacher. He is one of the greatest philosophers and shows you how to be a genius thinker in papers. The class is very laidback, but reading is expected. The most important thing to note about this class is it requires tremendous thinking. Critical thinking galore. Fun with group-discussion. Very nice teacher.

Professor Culik is laid back but professional. His method of teaching you to write makes it simple to write a good paper. Easy A if you're willing to put in the effort. He genuinely cares about each student and will guide you all the way. Participate in class and show improvement with each paper is all he wants. You'll learn alot from him.

Hugh is the best english teacher Macomb has. I highly recommend him! I took both 1180 and 1190 with him and both were fairly easy and fun. Just be prepared to write a lot of papers.

Professor Culik was one of the best teachers Ive had throughout all of my schooling experience. You need to pay attention to the class conversations for the background info on the essays (you write 4 essays but thats the only work you do in that class). The only way to fail his class is writing off topic essays, double check with him to get an A.

Professor Culik really cares about his job and his students. He really wants his students to think and come up with good ideas. A lot of the time he makes you question whether your work is good enough. He is very nice and caring, he's just different. He wants his students to have the same passion for the things he does, but sometimes we just don't.

I'll be honest, I loved him and I loved how he taught the class but you will not like his class if you don't like talking in class, skip often, or just want to write easy papers for a grade. He also has a small liberal undertone to his class. However, he actually cares and wants his students to get a good education but you actually need to work.

Professor Culik's class was definitely a class I looked forward to. Professor Culik does require participation but he will always want to hear your opinion and what you want to say. He is also very understanding gives you a lot of time to work on papers and helps you along the way.

He gives a lot of good feedback to help fix your mistakes but grades kind of tough. He did not have any zoom meeting which were a good and bad thing.

Professor Culik provides exceptional feedback and responds quickly to inquiries! The assignments build and develop into a total of three essays. I enjoyed how he influenced his expectations by incorporating writings authored by critical thinkers and profound researchers. The reading material was relatable and interesting to work with.

My online class was 8 weeks, during that time I wrote a lot of papers. The assignments aren't too hard, but if you do take one of his 8 week classes make sure to clear a decent amount of your school time to accomplish the assignments. Definitely take him if English is one of your moderate classes. He is a genuine teacher and wants you to learn!!!

Professor Culik wants you to put your time and effort into this class. There are a fair share of assignments... but these assignments are important for the development of the main writing pieces throughout the course. He's loves to give positive feedback and little hints here and there too. This class very effective!

I took the 8-week online version and would do it again. There is a lot of material to read, some I read thoroughly and some I skimmed. Culik gives awesome feedback as well!
