The best math teacher I have ever had. I struggled with math alot, but his notes were very helpful. His pace is great and I almost never got "lost". His grading of tests is fair, he will give credit even if you don't get right answer, but try. A
Very Clear and very helpful. All examples make learning statistics easier. He writes all the information you need on the board, tests are from the class notes. No trick questions on the exams, 3x5 card for formulas. He's The best!! and he cares about us!!
He is VERY Clear and makes all those problems you've never been able to "get" easy. I've recomended him several times to friends. A++
Mr. Grifth makes statistics easy because he explains what is essential to understanding the material. I found this class to be not just easy but very helpful especially if you are going into psychology (Research methods)

We can use note cards in exams and final. His class notes are very clear to see and write down. We just need to review the notes for exams; for the final, it's from 3 exams. Have extra credits, no turn in homework.
He's the best math teacher I've ever had. His writing is extremely ledgible and he is very organized. Wonderful at explaining things
Very CLEAR!! on material. Sucked in math but now it's a piece of cake. Studied notes for 10-15 min. Got a B. Doesn't care about attendence or homework THE BOMB. Showed late to class everyday and didn't care.
he doesn't have the ability to teach upper division classes. he had too much emphysis on the format of the proof but neglected the logic of the proof. he did not relate any geometry to linear transformations. i hated it.
Man his tests are hard no matter how hard u study it is so freakin hard to get an A. He takes a lot of points off for small things. His lectures are good
i seriously recommend this teacher.he makes everything easy to understand and gives us notes that help alot on the homework..(which we dont need to turn in),..nice guy..cares about his students and is very easy if you actually do your work and try a little bit..
this dude is goofy
Very cool teacher. Teaches material well. You will never have trouble understanding the math, he explains it clearly. Homework is optional but do two or three problems for practice and you'll do fine.
He is the hardest math teacher I have ever taken. He is very concerned about giving proofs of equations, and not tell how they relate to the homework. He also never reviews material from past days. That is why his tests are so hard. You need to spend a lot of time studying on your own.
GRIFFITH IS A GOD! He is an excellent teacher and makes math easy and fun. He is also very amusing.
The best teacher I have ever taken. I always sucked at math, but the way he teaches it I understand. Very clear in lectures, notes, and tests. Will give credit on tests even if you get wrong answer, but try to solve. I have taken him for 51, 71, 110. Take his classes!
He is an awesome teacher. He gives very clear and organized lectures. He also has a certain enthusiasm that gets you involved in the lecture. He doesn't collect hw but will do hw problems for you. His tests are not necessarily easy but he will never try to trick you. He is really good about giving help during his office hours.
excellent
The best math teacher at Mt.Sac. I have always done bad in Math, but did well in his classes. He explains every step very well and clearly. No HW, it is up to you if you need to do it. HIGHLY recommended.
He is an excellent teacher. He is very clear, and what he tells you what is going to be on the test. Most of the time his class is interesting. I highly recommend taking him.
gave out clear lecture but the tests are so freaking hard, and he deducted many points on some minor mistake, don't recommend to take him. don't really like his personality 'cause he would make fun on lower division math class students, like he made fun on students on math 51 and math 110, even though it 's none of my business but i still feel bad.
notes are so clear! tests are easy! easy A! take him!
Excellent teacher. Explains things very well. No need to open book except for looking up tables. HW optional. Exams aren't that hard, plus he gives you a review exam with pretty much everything that will be on exam! Picky grader though. Highly recommend!
Mr Griffith's is a great teacher. He explains his material very well.if you take notes in his class you will be fine.He does not check on the homework. He does not care about attendance. He reviews every test and his test are very similar to it.He is picky at grading but his test are similar to his reviews so you will be fine.
he is a great teacher. very patient, and he cares about the students. highly recommened for those who hate math. you will leave that class feeling better about the subject of math.
GREAT TEACHER..I REGRET NOT TAKING HIM FOR 110 BECAUSE MY CLASS TIMES CONFLICTED WITH HIS...HE IS THE BEST. SERIOUSLY. EVEN FOR MATH DUMMIES..
Mr. Griffith was one of the best professors I had while attending Mt. SAC.
This guy is the best math professor there is. I hate math and barely passed 71. I'm now getting an A in his 110 class. He's not ridiculous like all the other math professors. He knows how to explain the subject.
Very nice teacher, very clear, doesn't test anything he hasn't cover in the lecture, and more importantly very helpful when it comes to homework. Doesn't collect homework
5 years at mt sac and a b in the class... sad. if your iq is higher than the iq of a pork chop then you should be able to get an a (you can use books and a page of notes on the test). only problem is the lab projects theyre really a waste of 15 minutes and forks.
this is my 5th year at mtsac already and i took math classes from learn to math 160. this is the clearest & easiest math class ive ever took here. I took this class a couple years ago and i think he still lets us have our own notes written on a note card on exam days. The best thing is that i did not have to read the book. just go to class. i got B
he is an excellent teacher****!!!he is the BEST teacher!! if you fear math take him he will make it easy as possible for you to understand. His notes are very clear. Tests and final are no surprises!! You will learn and retain math after listening to his notes.
This professor explains the material very clear. Very organized. Sometimes he makes jokes that are so stupid that is even funny. Tests are hard and he will not forgive for minor mistakes. BUT the way he teaches you will learn the material very well. Does not collect homework neither takes roll.
Mr. Griffith is the best teacher I've ever had. I have always hated math...yet somehow Griffith makes it enjoyable, applicable to life, and makes you look forward to coming to each class! He does not collect homework, though assigns it for practice, and also allows notes on the tests. If you have to take a 100 level Math class, TAKE GRIFFITH!
Very clear and easy exams. Very helpful and will spend time explaining. Lectures very organized and writing very legible and at good a pace. Very pleasant. Tells you a lot of what he will test on; maybe too much. Only problem may be that he doesn't teach as in depth as some other professors. Well liked by most students I know.
Good teacher. very neat which you dont see from many math teachers and he shows work nicely. I enjoyed math for the first time taking his class
OK, I took his classes a while ago, and decided to check this site out and check up on old teachers. I have to say he is one of the best overall teachers I've ever had at Mt. SAC. VERY clear, VERY neat, VERY organized. He will give plenty of examples. Do the HW. When studying, review your HW and try some unassigned problems.
Prof. Griffin is the best math teacher, hands down. He's very organized, vert neat, very friendly, and most of all, very helpful. He's very enthusiastic about teaching so you can't fall asleep in class. The tests are based on his lectures so it's a very fair test. Mt. Sac should have more teachers like him.
Took him a while ago, but he was very organized and neat. He went at a pace everyone could follow and clarified anything anyone had questions on. Very approachable outside of class. Got a B in 280 because I never did any HW and only studied for tests. Aced 285 because I did the HW.
nice guy. clear & gd hand writing on board, detalied explanation on everything, gd time managing, nice jokes, gives hw but never collects. fair grading, takes pt off easily(I say), but overall u will be ok. tells exam topics precisely of how many and wt kind, 2 easy maples only.u dont need to be smart, but hard working will pass or even get u B
HOMEWORK IS NOT MANDATORY
Love his handwriting and the way he teaches, very clear and organizing, does not collect hw or take attendance. willing to help after class or in office hour. tests are easy as long as you understand the lecture and reviewed.
Great professor. I had a B in the class, but that was because I slacked in the first two midterms and made some stupid mistakes. If I had done all the homework and reviewed the lectures, it would have been an easy A. Even though he explains the material explicitly and well, you should still do all the homework and lectures if you want a sure A.
You have to attend class everyday if you don't it's pretty hard to get back up because he does his own lectures basically, which makes it easier. For the quizzes and tests, he gives you a full page cheat sheet but with no worked out problems. Got an A.
Great professor!! VERY clear, clear to a point that you will definately get it. Gives you a study guide before exam, well prepare students for exams and final! VERY helpful and VERY nice! Also, with nice and clear handwritings!! STRONGLY RECOMMEND!!
Griffith is one of the best professors at Mount Sac. He is very helpful and easy. If you want to get an 'A' then you need to attend all the lectures and do the homework. The homwork is not mandatory, but it helps you to understand the material well. His notes help a lot and are very easy to understand because of clarity. Take Griffith for Math:)
Is the best math professor ever. I got an A in his class and love math even more. He is very clear with his lecture and makes you understand. Take him I recommend it. =]
great teacher...explains in a way you can understand. Very helpful and nice.
Very helpful and available if you need help. Test are what is on study sheet. Made it fun to learn math
he has everything a student who goes to ratemyprof.com would look for.
He is a wonderful instructor. He teaches well, he uses different colored markers for clarity, he is helpful during and after class. He entertains the classroom with occasional funny stories. Homework is not mandatory, but helpful, for your own good. He gives out a study guide and sticks to it during the exam. People, if you fail, blame yourselves.
i think mr. Griffin is a very nice teacher. he makes the weirdest jokes, but u knoe, hez jt trying to make the class interesting =) his tests are pretty easy, pretty much if u pay attention in class w/o doing any hw, u will still get an A in the class! (dat was what i did XD)
BEST AT TEACHING!!!! IF I COULD HAVE HIM FOR EVERY CLASS I WOULD. VERY CLEAR!! THE BEST IF YOU ASK ME. A+++++++++++++
Very thorough. Excellent teacher. He doesn't give a lot of partial credit on tests though. He took 6 out of 10 points off on a problem just because i forgot a negative sign but i did everything else correctly.
he's the best professor ever! he teaches very clear. his test r easy but you have to make sure u do hw and the review sheet, then u will be alright. if u still get a C or lower, then it means u didn't study and pay attention in the class or...
He is the nicest guy and he understands that some of us have to take math to transfer, not cuz we want to! And, he made me have more confidence in math, because he teaches so clearly. He's great!
I am absolutley retarded at all math. Griffith is the best math teacher I have ever had in my life!! He is crystal clear and ready to help. I dont know how he did it but I actually cared and learned something. TAKE HIM IF YOUR BAD AT MATH!!! I got and A. Still cant believe it.
awesome professor. extremely clear and thorough with topic. gives homework for practice, but does not collect (winter session). you pretty much know exactly what's gonna be on the exam.
WOW. This professor is truly awesome. I've never had such an extremely clear, helpful, organized, neat professor like him - who is NICE on top of it. I definitely recommend him to everyone. I'm usually apathetic about writing personal comments here, but I just HAD to show off about how lucky I am to be taking him this summer.
The best teacher at mt. sac! he is clear, he gives review sheets,he is organized, and even in a summer semester gives back the test the next day! he gives u hwk, but not too much, he doesn't grade it either. i heard during reg. semesters u do hwk online though. im goin to write a letter about him to the school- he is that good!
Mr.Griffith is by far the best math instructor I ever had. He explains things clearly, and makes them easy to understand. He even uses 4 different colors on the board to make sure you don't get confused along the way. Homework was optional for my course, but as you know, math is about practice. Take this guy, do your HW, and you'll do fine!
Griffith is a quality teacher! I think he should teach other teachers how to teach. He has neat handwritting, uses different colors on the board, and is articulate. SAC should give him a raise to make him teach for along time,or somthing so other students can benefit from him in the future.I get Cs is math. i got an A!
the best math professor on campus! i wish i could take him for all my math classes.. he's clear and conscience with what he wants for the exams. hwks are done online. textbooks and attendances are optional. easy A if you study and know his review sheets for the exams! highly recommended!
goodness what a great instructor! we had a sub one time...and the class was in tears..hahaha take him if you struggle with math!
Words cannot explain how great he is. He explains problems so well and he doesn't embarrass you when you say the wrong thing! I wish he was teaching Stats in the spring.I love how he involves the class during lecture, but that's just me. His study guide kicks ass! Same as test just differnt problems.Best teacher on campus, just great guy all around!
i agree with all the other comments down there. he actually cares about his students.
that comment on the bottom made me laugh. yea, he should teach other instructors.
Yup his lectures are amazingly clear and easy to follow. In fact, it's the first math class in my entire schooling that I've ever been able to pay attention to and understand. He not only shows you how to do the problem, but he thoroughly explains the concepts and the ways to reason and think through the problem to solve it.
Prof. Griffith was the best teacher I've had at MtSAC. He makes things so easy to understand. Gives test reviews exactly the same as tests except with different #'s. Again, the best teacher at MtSAC.
Greatest math teacher ever..HE ACTUALLY TEACHES!!!!!!!
I haven't even FINISHED the Spring 71 class yet, but I can already tell that I'm going to pass with an awesome instructor like him. Like the last comment, he actually TEACHES. Y'know those things we were just taught to remember as rules, like why you gotta find an LCD for a fraction an' stuff? HE ACTUALLY TEACHES YOU WHY.
Great prof. I am not good at math but I work hard at it. He makes it real easy and he is very helpful! I would take him again.
best math professor i have had. makes learning math easy. attendence not required, but attending will help you get a good grade...
BEST MATH PROF. I HAVE EVER HAD. I would say go to class even though he does not care if you are there. It was kind of hard at the but if you do well on most of the test and do the homework you will for sure pass. One quiz and I think 5 or 6 test. The lowest test will be sub for the final grade, if better then your lowest. Great Prof. TAKE HIM!!!!
best math teacher. i mean possibly the greatest u could ever have. he has an easy style of teaching where he carefully goes through few problems thoroughly rather than just assigning 15+ to work on in class. easy. and nice. his voice sometimes sounds like vince vaughn haha
HAHAHAH VINCE VAUGH VOICE YEAH! He's crystal clear. Got to lecture, do your homework and you'll be fine! He oversimplifies his explanation down to everyone's level so that everyone will understand. One of the best professors I've ever had. His class always gets full first! Take him if you get the opportunity!
HUGH GRIFFITH IS A GENIUS
He is a great professor he genuinly cares and dumbs things down for even the most mathmatically challenged he makes it all make sense do the homework and DO NOT MISS CLASS
He's extreamly clear! I got a B in the class and I hate math, I've never gotten a higher grade than a C until him, I really recommend him!
Griffith is a great math prof. easy to understand. Go to all his lectures and follow the way he teaches you and you should do well. He is a picky grader but tests usually follow his review sheets. He cracks corny jokes and makes the class easy going. Never puts you on the spot and makes sure you understand.
hugh is seriously the best teacher i have ever had! i seriously suck at math and i got an A in his class. he really helps you understand everything! he has office hours and he is more than happy to help you with any questions you have and he doesnt make you sound stupid. he does not take attendance but its highly reccomended to understand everythin
Prof. Griffith is an fabulous professor. He is very clear and he write super neat! His notes are really good & I didn't even have to do the H/W because I studied off his notes and study guides! really good!
He really cares about each student's development in the class and makes sure that everyone understands. If you already have knowledge of the lesson, it can be really boring since he explains every little step. However this could be helpful to a student who does not understand. He is a great teacher overall!
He makes it easy to understand how to solve problems. i wish he was teaching the next class next semester so i could take him again. i actually didnt dred going to his class because i knew that i was going to understand what he was going to teach no matter what it was. and he is really nice and very approachable to talk to and ask questions to
I took Mr. Griffith for all the math classes I had to take. Going in, I could barely solve an equation with a fraction. Leaving Mt. SAC, because of his help and knowledge, I left with high score in all my courses, including Statistics. LOVED Stats! TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!! I feel SO MUCH more at ease now!!!!!
Take Griffith he truly is gifted with math, well explain with his lectures. Take Him, you'll learn alot, he was kinda funny as well
Started at Math 50!!! Then failed 50,51 then took a again with a good teacher then off to 71 with Griffith paseed wooo hooo!!!!Next Stats...results!!! Passed!!!! Thank you Mr. Griffith!!!!!!!You are AWESOME!!!!!!!!
Started at Math 50!!! Then failed 50,51 then took a again with a good teacher then off to 71 with Griffith paseed wooo hooo!!!!Next Stats...results!!! Passed!!!! Thank you Mr. Griffith!!!!!!!You are AWESOME!!!!!!!!
if you struggle with math then you should take mr. griffith!! he is by far the best professor i have ever had for math. i have taken many of the other math professors at mt sac and learned nothing. stats actually made sense in his class. he has a great way of explaining so you can understand the material and pass the class.
He's sooooooo CLEAR!!!! NO KIDDING SERIOUSLY!!!! I got an A on every test and a final!
I'm really horrible at math, but what I got to say is that Professor Griffith is one the BEST math instructors of Mt. Sac! This is my second time taking math 71 and I know for sure, I will succeed! His exams are NOT difficult at all. He gives you review sheets and if you're stuck on a certain problem, see him at his office. He will help you!
Mt Sac's finest Math professor! He is crystal clear in his explanations, perfect penmanship, study guides for all 4 tests, no quizzes, posts exam grades within a couple of hours, emails the class ahead of time if he knows he will miss class, all homework is online so you don't need a book, and dependable office hours! Thank you, Professor Griffith!
he is an easy teacher, but you have to actually pay attention. the firts 2 test i took i got a's and b's but then the last 2 i got f's so you need to pay attention. homework is online and you don't need the book. doesnt care if your there or not,i missed like 5 days of class and passed with a C. if you just want to pass you need 65% to get a C
He is soooo awesome!!! I took him for math 71 and wanted him for every math class... too bad hes only teaching 71 for a few semesters. very helpful, CLEAR, understandable, and good clear writing! take him!
This guy's the math hero of Mt. Sac's math department! Professor Griffith is very, very clear and his review sheets are very similiar to the ones that will be on the exam. If you're math skills are poor, take Professor Griffith! You won't regret! I would love to take him again for STATS or math 130. Thanks Mr. Griffith, you've helped me a lot!
I have been at mtsac since math 50 and this is the best math professor and maybe top 3 best overall professor I've had yet. Practice the problems in the notes, hw, and study guide and you will ace the test. He is very helpful too when you ask him questions.
Really good Prof. Got an A in all exams..clear & nice writing for a guy..His study guides are similar to the exams...Should really take his class!
He makes sure that you understand the material. He is an excellent lecturer. You will definitely learn the material. If you do not get an 'A,' there is something deeply wring with you.
Class is easy and Mr. Griffith really does teach very well! All of his homework is online and you don't have to come to class everyday (I did, just to get important notes). I ended up getting As and Bs on my exams so far. Great teacher to have this semester!
Mr. Griffith is a genius! He really makes math easy, rather than doing it the hard way. He shows you lots of good short-cuts and gives really good study guides that will cover on each of his exams. Thanks Mr. Griffith, you're the best!
He sure is a great mathematician to me! I'm really bad at calculus, but Mr. Griffith always shows easier ways to solve the hardest problems. One of my favorite professors of Mt. Sac!
Great math teacher! Very easy class if you attend class
This professor makes math easy for me! I really suck at math, but Mr. Griffith is the answer to my problem. Take lots of good notes and you'll get the grade you deserve. I totally recommend him!
I have never fully understood math till now. Homework is all online. Test are based off the review sheets. This class is the best I've ever taken, and I hate math.
He is the best! crystal clear & always avail to help u. I took this class two other x's & not successful, passing now with an B in his class. taking him again in spring for 71 wouldn't think of taking anyone else! he's made it so much uncomplicated that im thinking of majoring in mathematics now, i now see its possible!
The best professor you could probably take for math. Believe all the ratings because he is easy, helpful, and clear. Always makes sure everyone understands each new concept before he moves on. I hate math but he is such a nice guy that class didnt seem all that bad. TAKE HIM!
THE BEST math professor at mt sac. i would like to take all my math classes with him. very clear and goes at whatever pace you need. extremely helpful. just go to class and do your homework and you are good to go!
The BEST mathematics professor I've had! He really gives good and clear examples and he always is willing to help you if you're stuck. Take him, you won't regret!
Hugh is a nice person, however his class is hard and he does not give any extra credit. Attendance is mandatory and he prefers you do all the problems his way or you get half credit which ends up hurting your grade. If math is not an easy subject for you, DO NOT TAKE Prof. Griffith!!!
Hugh is just one of the most helpful and intelligent math professors in the cirriculum. I passed all my exams with As and Bs. His voice also reminds me of Vince Vaughn, lol. Take him, I highly recommend it!
I hated math before I met him. Statistic is a hard class, but not with him. He teaches the class as if you're in grade school. Don't miss class bec trust me...you'll miss a lot of things. When it comes to HW, they're not mandatory bec he's never gunna collect them. But do it anyway bec it'll help u alot. I love his teaching ethics. Great professor
Take him for statistics! He teaches it step by step and he's very comprehendable! I enjoyed stats b/c of him. He also writes very well too. Hes really good!
Took him for math 130 and let me say he is an amazing professor. He really breaks down the material and grades really easy. You can end up with a 65% in the class and still get a C wow! TAKE HIM if you suck math and really want to learn ! :)
I HATE MATH, but this guy is GREAT! Best way to prep for transfer. He is better than my University's professor. I wish Mr. G would teach at my university.
Mr. Griffith is the best!!! Tests are so do-able & so is he ...I mean the class ;) Take him & do to class!!!!! Havent got my grade yet but outcome is looking well...Hmmm i wonder if he is single??
hands down, the BEST math professor ever.
This guy is the best math teacher I've ever had. I've taken this class in high school and didn't pass and another time for my first semester and didn't pass but with this guy he makes it really easy and understandable. you do all hw online and it shows you how to do it. and theres 8 test in class and there pretty short too. Definitely most dope
Attendance isn't mandatory but it's always good to sit in for the lectures. It WILL really BENEFIT your grade in the end. Replaces missed exam with final exam score. Class consists of 8 hand-written exams. Gives online homework that are totally doable!! (unlike the crappy textbooks) Doesn't require textbook! ^_^
To be honest, I kind of had a hard time mainly because of his tests, which aren't multiple choice BUT handwritten work. The points he docked off really killed me. Other than that, he's a really good teacher, very clear on what he expects. If you do not understand something, he'll take the time to help you understand. Good sense of humor too! :)
this guy is very cool. He knows how to make math interesting and easy to understand. I was never a good in math but thanks to him I now don't seem to find it all that difficult.
interesting enough...notice that no one from his math 181 class actually commented...because he gave a final that averages 60% to the class, and that screwed up a whole lot of people. He even admitted to students that he made a big mistake in his grading system, and made it extremely hard to avoid students taking advantage of him, which is unfair.
Professor Griffith if one of the best professor at mt.sac. He's an excellent teacher and he's very funny. The homework is online and the test are coming from the homework.
Good math teacher. Uses an extensive variety of colors, which make notes easier to understand. Math 180 in 6wks is hard, if you're taking it for summer be ready for 4hr lectures followed by 5+ hours of study/day. Cracks jokes in class. 4 exams: 60%; final: 25%; Hw: 10%; lab: 5%. HW Helps a lot! Tests based on notes. Review often.
Extremely glad a friend of mine recommended Griffith for 71. Prior to the Fall semester, I knew nothing about him, besides hearing about how good he was. He exceeded expectations, and then some. Very precise and consistent in his lectures. Tests were done almost weekly. Attendance wasn't mandatory, but should've. And the atmosphere was great!
Great professor. The clarity he can deliver with each topic is amazing and helps out tremendously. I truly enjoyed taking his class and 180 summer sesh is tedious. Grade layout is identical to previous comment here. His dorky jokes lighten things up. Lastly, he tests on what he teaches! Crazy concept, right? :P No XC but hw/lab are easy points.
I had him for both 180 and 181 and he is really good at what he does. Pros include Clear Notes, Good Explanations, Neat Writings, Test Exactly like Notes, helpful, doesn't make you feel stupid and extremely clear. Only con was a long final other than that he's honestly the best professor I've had.
Teaching style: Writes key-points in different colored chalk on the board. Slows down to answer questions. Relates equations to real-life problems. Exams: Covers exactly what he lectured, no surprises, very easy. Character: Funny guy, makes class interesting. Quirky sense of humor. Highly recommend, go to class and you'll get a good grade.
I highly recommend this prof. He is so nice and explain everything very clearly.Easy class, easy work, and easy examinations!!
PRO: Knows his materials and CAN teach and trys to be funny. CON: His grading scale sucks. Final worth WAY TOO much.
He is the BEST math professor Mt. Sac has! I know 6 others & Prof. Griffith is hands down the best! He is super clear with his material and always welcomes your input and or questions. If you consistently attend class, take notes, review them, you WILL pass ALL exams.
Very great teacher makes math relate to life situation, funny, very clear, very helpful. Best teacher I've had so far.
This professor is great. During a semester for 181 T-F,he had 8 test and each test was only 3~4 sections. I think its fair that he test on small amount of information. However his grading is wack. He takes off 3 pts out of 10 for using addition and not subtraction. His grades really hard, seems like he wants perfection. Overall, fair class?
I hate math but he teaches really well!very clear explanation.8tests+1final,bc we meet 1hr per day and 4days a week, each test has about 10questions.final is hard bc it tests all material,so be prepared.his 8 tests are not that hard, test problem style are bout the same as notes. so study the notes and you will be fine. also, there are 2 labs
The Good: Master of the Whiteboard. Makes other Profs look amateurs. Uses Colors and when a makers done its in the trash. Talks in a Good Loud Volume. Grades and returns tests and labs very next class. The Bad: Very Tough Grader. Every things got to be done his way or major points off. Makes everybody use Costly Web Site to do Homework.
DO NOT TAKE HIM FOR COLLAGE LEVEL MATH CLASS!!! If your GPA matters to you, just don't. He grades final unbelievably hard. His grading system make no sense. Take him only if you totally suck at math (Math 71 or lower) and need only a passing grade.
Seriously he is a very good teacher. He's been teaching for like 20 years so he is very good at what he does. He actually teaches you different ways to attack a problem and he doesn't require you to buy a book and teach yourself. Tests come right from the notes. Easy class easy A. Take him if math is not your thing.
No Good Very Bad.
He is very good at teaching and always encourages you to come to him for help during office hours. Very good at explaining things and says a lot of corny jokes.
Great teacher who constantly goes over the material until everyone understands. A good sense of humor and assigns homework but does not collect. A fairly easy class for math.
Good professor. Gives detailed lectures and notes. He grades fairly and really tries to help students pass the class. He does use the website heavily where you do your homework and grades are posted there as well. The site is on the pricey side but no physical textbook is required.
Great instructor! Very clear on what he teaches and what he expects.Lots of notes and tests are graded on the heavy side. Either you get full credit for correct answers + work or half even if you make 1 mistake(no 6,7,8 or 9 pts). HW is done online, so you have to buy a mathlab code. Overall great if you can keep up and final worth one quarter %.
He's a great professor. Possibly my favorite math professor I have had at mt. sac. Definitely recommend him. Do his practice problems to study for the tests!!!
Very clear and easy to follow. He uses many different colors to explain on the board, and is open to questions. The homework is done online, which is a great system. His tests are graded fairly, with lots of partial credit. Fantastic teacher. Definitely the best math teacher I've had. It takes a couple classes to warm up to his 'humor'.
Listen to the reviewers, this guy grades harsh (even for a 71 class!). I can't believe I got a C when I should have gotten an A. Got A's on all my previous math classes except this one! His grading scale will throw you off! Don't take that chance if you have a good GPA! I am not happy I got a C and I studied everything!!!
One of the best professors I have had. Total respect for his teaching. Highly recommend. No need to get into detail, you'll have to see for yourself. Easy A, pay attention. He cracks funny jokes too.
Out of a class of 35, 11 failed. Pretty high chance of failing if you ask me! (32%!). I failed because there was no time to finish his exams and will give you the hardest problems not found in the book, even doing the homework wasn't enough! On the other hand, he's ok and covers half the material, but just not enough to prepare you for his tests
Griffith uses color coded notes on board, makes it REALLY easy to follow along. Addresses questions during class which is great. Taking the summer class, does not have mandatory office hours but still grants a 30 minute session before class. Really explains "why" which is super important for me in Calc.
Do not take this class if you value your GPA! He purposely makes his tests to result in a C average. Take this class if you want to learn from a dedicated teacher and be prepared for higher calculus. Notes = Test Gold. Homework = Practice Speed Solving. Hint: wear a watch during test, time management = better grade.
I took him in summer and thankfully I transferred. He's nice, cool, and funny. His notes should keep you along (he color codes) and he welcomes questions. I've taken 2 other math professors at SAC, and both were horrible. I'm not saying he's an easy teacher, but he's a good teacher. Just study and follow along the notes, you should be fine!
Best teacher I'v ever had.
LOVE HIM! He "dumbs" it down really good, explains step by step. It's a math class, you HAVE to study in order to pass. Online hw (easy). His jokes are cheesy but hes adorable. Lambert(71) and Johnson (Math130) don't know how to teach compared to him. TAKE HIM because you will need to learn this for other high math classes. Ima retake 130 w him(:
He was probably the best math teacher i took at Mt Sac. super clear and wont move on if you dont understand it. online hw is super understanding and helpful, i loved it. im an idiot for missing so much class, and busting an all nighter the night before the final... lol #tu haha i failed, but learned to much and i wish i wasnt so foolish.
Best professor I've ever had. He gives very informative and crystal clear lectures on every topic. His color-coding and neat handwriting makes taking notes extremely easy. Homework is assigned after every lecture . They are not collected but do them all if you want to do well on exams (they're manageable).
If you wish to learn a lot and become good with calc 2, take this class. His lectures are clear and informative and exams are easy if you practice. Although, his final exam is killer. I didn't believe one who scores A's on exams can fail the final, but now sadly I do. There's not enough time to work through everything carefully, or even finish.
I earned my grade the hard way. His final is an utter nightmare, he even admitted that the final was specifically designed to lower the overall grade (You have to earn a solid A to ensure no matter how bad the final is, you will have a B at least) Expect hard, hard work!! Yes I meant it, trying your "best"is not enough to succeed in his class!!
His class and tests are easy, fully understood everything, however, the way he grades will turn the class into nightmare. You won't be able to get full credit if you don't do it as he teaches in class. Literally, need to write the exact same thing. As for the final, he intentionally made it impossible to finish in the time given. NO EXTRA CREDIT!!!
If you are one of those people who take professors because of partial credit, don't take Griffith. His grading criteria is beyond understandable, the score he gives you in every question is absolute, good luck asking for 1 more point. By any means, if your grade is close to A, he will try everything to keep you in B. Why? Go ask him.
Griffith's lectures are amazingly clear and easy to take notes of. (they're also entertaining since he cracks jokes) Exams are very manageable as long as you study your notes. Exam was a bit killer, just make sure you manage your time. No quizzes, doesn't collect hw but do them if you want to pass. Absolutely enjoyed his class, I learned a lot.
I took his 181 last Spring. His tests were pretty easy comparing to other professors. If you have chance to take this professor, take hime and then get a good grade.
Great teacher for math 71, clear lectures and easy to understand lessons. The only gripe with the class is how tests are graded, be sure to only use the steps used in class to solve problems or you will loose a few points.
Great teacher would recommend to anyone
Really good professor. I recommend this professor to anyone who struggles with math, he explains everything literally step by step until you understand it. Gives a lot of online hw but it definitely helps with tests. For the final all you have to do is study all previous test. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Maintained an A the whole semester
I am glad to take Prof. Griffith for my last math class at mt. sac. He had great enthusiasm and patience for teaching math, and every class meeting I felt that I learned a lot of knowledge from him!! Highly Recommend!!
Best math professor I ever had. Makes lectures easy to understand and cracks jokes at the same time. Test are reasonable, just make sure you take good notes. Well recommended!!!
Griffith is a particularly good teacher for those who struggle with or lack personal interest in maths. He does not get as deep into the "why" as some professors (Tran, for instance). Lectures are relatively slow-paced and very clear. Test questions are straightforward. Check your work on tests Take if you don't need/want to be challenged.
Mr. Griffith is a well man. His teaching style is so exceptional that I barely did homework and practiced by reading his notes instead! He breaks down problems to the lowest common denominator, no pun intended, while adding in his own hilarious jokes and stories about his personal experience with math and life lessons as well. Would take again!
Made me actually like calculus. Extra credit questions on exams, exams are all from lectures and class examples so pay attention and you'll do well. Lectures are clear and well-organised and he does a good job of explaining things simply. Homework was not collected or graded but make sure you do it for practice.
Extremely fair professor who bases his exams entirely off assigned homework and lectures. Grading for the class is similar to a 4-year university, with exams making up the majority of your grade. Pretty chill and also will round up if you are borderline.
Very good math professor. His lectures are VERY clear and organized. In addition, his handwriting is absolutely beautiful! Don't rely on his extra credit. Keep going over the notes from class and practice with the given HW assignments (HW not collected). His tests are almost IDENTICAL to the examples done in class. The lab assignments are easy.
Professor Griffith has been by far my favorite math teacher. He has lectures that are extremely easy and super simple. His grading criteria are very simple as well. He does not grade attendance nor does he grade homework, which can be a good or bad thing for students. Overall, he makes class enjoyable, even in a mathematics environment!
Easy professor. Tries to make class fun by adding so much humor in between lectures. I hate math but he makes it SO CLEAR to everyone. His goal: not to let a student leave without understanding the lecture of the day. HWs are optional but helpful for the tests. Tests are based on the lectures he teaches. If help is needed, GO TO HIS OFFICE HRS! :)
Great math teacher! His notes/lectures are clear and easy to read. He has alot of patience and answers all questions. He likes to say jokes which keeps the class not boring. If you skip a class you are missing out on the way he solves problems and you WANT to be there because it makes problem solving so much simpler. Hes tests are on the notes!!!
Professor Griffith is one of the best teachers I've had, not just at Mount Sac, but ever. His exams are clear-cut and straight from the examples in lecture. There's 5 tests (with extra credit) before the final and although he assigns homework he doesn't collect it. He cracks jokes and looks like Gary Sinise. Seriously, take this guy.
hes the best math professor/teacher ive ever had in my whole life. he is so clear on the notes and doesnt move on until you 100% understand the material. He makes everything seem so easy and it is! i love math because of him. he says cheesy jokes which makes the class not boring.
I've took many math professors. But Professor Griffith is gold. He teaches better than any professors I've encountered in the STEM courses. He's a prime example of what an exceptional lecturer should look like. You'd be missing out if you do not take his class.
Hes amazing. He explains things in simplist form and he is willing to answer questions in that moment, if you dont understand. He is straight forward with his notes. I recommend him for math 71.
Explains everything very clearly. His teaching style made calc understandable. Tests are examples he covered in class, but theres a lot of examples. Tests are 60% , final is 30% and lab (easy) is 10% . Overall he is a great teacher . HW is not collected.
Grade consists of mostly test scores. Final is the killer if youre not prepared.
He is not a bad professor bur his lectures are dry so it is easy to get disconnected and space out. Doesn't collect homework. He only grades tests which are short but each problem is worth 10 pts and I am a slow test taker by nature so I don't get to finish my tests. Those 2-3 blank problems give me about a C.
He's the best math professor I've ever had. He explains everything so well.
He is so good that I would take his class again!
By far the best math professor I've ever had. I took him for Math 71 and now I'm taking him for Math 150. He uses different colored markers so it's easy to see the changes in the problems. He is very clear and wants to help you. He is easily accessible outside of class. HW is not collected but if you want good grades, practice what is difficult
Study Study Study for the final. The first five exams are okay, but the final will hurt you if you don't study. Also watch out for silly and dumb mistakes as he deducts a lot as his exams are worth 70-100 points.
The class was decent. He is the toughest grader I ever had and will mark you down severely on small mistakes and when the show your work doesn't match with how he wants the solution. He also under prepared us for the final making it extremely hard since it was nothing like the notes and previous exams.
Sooooo hard!!!!!! Don't take him, plz.
Not only the best math teacher I've taken at Mt. SAC- the best teacher I've EVER taken in general. Yes, he's picky on tests, but that is because his tests are easier. He breaks his lectures down in the simplest form and color codes everything- plus his penmanship is amazing! I would've taken him for 181 in a heartbeat if my sched allowed it.
Make sure you memorize the writing form of questions that he gives during class. He will deduct points if your form doesn't match with him. His chapter tests are not very hard. But study on the notes and examples. Final exam might be heavy...
He's honestly such a wonderful teacher, hands down. His notes are very clear and clean. Very straight forward to what he wants on his test. Homework isn't collected, but this is calculus, so obviously you need to study. Professor Griffith is the best math professors I've ever had. Consider yourself lucky to take him. Wish he taught Calc 3, Lin Alg.
The best math professor Ive ever taken. Will be taking again.
Professor Griffith is great at explaining problems and making sure you understand the problem. My complaint with him is that the homework is a lot more difficult than the in class examples so I had to spend a lot of time outside class trying to figure it out. He is also a tough grader so don't make a mistake in showing your work .
Best teacher I have ever had! His tests are like the examples he shows in class and the final is also like the previous tests! No homework credit, grade is divided into 5 tests (including final) and are all with 20% of your grade. Although I still managed to get a high B at the end of the semester.
Lecture isnt heavy. Amazing explanations to every topic. Exams mirror notes and overall easy. Homework isnt graded. No quizzes. Final isnt difficult if you study the needed amount! Definitely would take him again if you taught Math 280
Griffith is an extremely kind and approachable person and wants students to succeed. He's the best professor I had in terms of lectures. He clearly explains everything and I never felt confused when he taught. However, your grade is heavily based on exams. He's also strict on grading, so I wouldn't recommend his class if you're bad at taking exams.
amazing! his lectures cover everything, he gives so many examples and truly knows his stuff. he is always so energetic and makes taking the class fun, he honestly made math easy and fun and math 181 is one of the hardest courses here at mt sac
Professor Griffith is in my opinion the best math professor I've ever had. I had been struggling a with math the past few semesters but Professor Griffith makes it so easy to understand. He explains every concept thoroughly and has no problem explaining unclear topics. I highly recommend this professor he is truly amazing
this guys is very clear took for 180 and 181 got a B and and then an A.
AMAZING PROFESSOR YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED
Nice guy but strict grader. Does not give partial credit and is very test heavy. Everything he lectures is on the exam, study the exact problems that he puts on the board because they will be there! Final exam is cumulative
Took him again I liked him so much
So hard!!!!!! Don't take him, please.
The class was decent. He is the toughest grader I ever had and will mark you down severely on small mistakes and when the show your work doesn't match with how he wants the solution. He also under prepared us for the final making it extremely hard since it was nothing like the notes and previous exams
PROS: Has humor Very Clear Optional Hw Exams identical to notes, has one extra credit problem on each exam except the final CONS: Pretty harsh grader for simple mistakes. Ex: Missed a negative sign? That's 3 points off out of your problem which is out of 10. Regular Profs would only take 1 or half credit off. Final does not replace lowest exam
I have taken his 260, 180, and 181. He is the best math professor at Mt Sac. His exams are easy if you take good notes in class. you will be lucky if you can take his class and won't regret.
Professor Griffith is fantastic! He is thorough in his lectures and is clearly willing to help his students in any way he can. He makes everything easy to understand. Even though we are remote, I feel like I'm learning just as much as I would in person with him. The only difficult thing about his class is your entire grade is your test performance.
He teaches very well. HOWEVER, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU TAKE OTHER DECENT PROF IF YOU'RE BAD TEST TAKER. HE SHOWS NO MERCY IF YOU MAKE EVEN A SMALL MISTAKE. His tests are straightforward, if you study the notes he gives. I had him for couple courses I learned alot from him but I would rather take it some other decent prof that grades easier.
The best math prof at Mt SAC and an awesome guy all around. His lectures are perfect. Really good at explaining things and has super organized writing. HOWEVER dont take him if youre a bad test taker. Your grade is 100% based on exams and hes a strict grader. But youll do fine. Studied only using the examples he gave in class and got a B. Did no hw
Having only taken a few professors at Mt. Sac, Professor Griffith has established behaviors I wish my future professors will mimic. He is caring, and sometimes funny during lectures and wants to make this unfortunate situation (COVID-19) go as smoothly as possible. Test problems closely mirror examples done in class rather than the ones from book.
I took him for 181 and 280 and earned As in both. His lectures are very straightforward and easy to understand. There were 4 tests and a final, homework isn't required. Make sure you pay attention during class!! One of my favorite professors at Mt. Sac.
This class is very straightforward and the lectures are easy to go through and so Is the homework. HOWEVER, your grade is roughly 50 problems that's it. (4 tests, 1 final). Nothing else that's it. If you arent a SUPERB test taker pls don't take this class and ruin your gpa. You make stupid mistakes on tests and you end up with a B or worse .
Second time around with Prof Griffith, highly respected math professor literally never felt lost in his lectures really easy to follow. The rumors are true he is a tough grade, but its impossible to not know whats on the exam. He tells you exactly the types of problems and they are directly ripped off of his lectures, just number changed
This is my first time taking him, and his lectures are amazing and they are clear to the point. Pay attention to the practice problems and the major examples in class because they will most likely be there on the test! The tests are doable, but a single minor mistake will cost you. The final is overwhelming but doable! I would take him again!!
Amazing Professor if you have the chance to take any math course with him do it! Taken during covid so online format hw was assigned but not collected. Lecture attendance not required but shouldn't miss them he explains concepts great! Your grade consists of only 4-5 test be careful on the test every point matters and he does mark off easily.
Clear grading creteria. Test a little heavy but after studying and paying attention on the class, it became vary easy for me. Professor have sence of humor and gives great feedback. It provide office hour and respond email quickly not longer than one day. Calculus3 is not easy for studying, but it became very easy and interesting at this lecture
His lectures are perfect, very easy to understand despite the hard content. Not an easy class if you just want to pass, you actually have to pay attention and study the content before the tests. Unfortunately his grade system is based only on tests, which makes it hard to bounce back. But if you do what a student is supposed to do, you will pass.
Great Professor. His lectures are clear and easy to understand. The test material is closely the same as the lecture. Overall great guys!
Really easy. All tests exactly what he lectures. HW not necessary as his tests are 1:1 similar to what he teaches in class. With that said, if you want to go above and beyond and learn deeper in math, he isn't the best teacher. Tamayo will usually go deeper in applications and deeper level math explanations and understanding.
Very nice and understanding.
Great lectures, HW is given but it's not required. I never did the homework, only studied the problems he gave on the lectures and passed with ease. Tests weren't too bad. But, PLEASE do not take this class if you haven't taken precalculus. You're gonna fail if you don't take precalc, everything in 180 builds on precalc.
!!!DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU HAVE NOT COMPLETED THE PREREQUSITES!!! This is true for any math 180 class! 2/3 of the class did not pass this semester because they had not completed math 150 and 160. As for the professor, he is awesome. Good lectures, EXTREMELY clear on the expectations for the tests. I recommend his office hours as well.
Griffith, was my prof in spring 2023. I really love how he taught us in class and how he wants to make sure that we all understand his lecture. He doesn't give a lot of EC but he gives EC on tests which aren't a lot. He only grades 3 tests and one final which can be hard to get an A if you mess up 1 or 2 tests. Show steps or u'll lose points.
I would only take if you feel comfortable in math otherwise you will struggle. There is no HW so make sure you get some kind of practice in. Exam heavy and harsh grader but otherwise it can be a really chill class. If you're good at math its an EZ A.
DO NOT take if you lack basic arithmetic skills. He is very moody and fails to even try to bother learning your name. He is a very strict grader, he will not curve, does not take attendance, does not collect homework, only 5 tests as your grade. He can teach the concepts very easy, but it relies on your previous skills. Better off taking some1 else
Very good professor. Please go to his lectures & complete the worksheets (although they aren't for any points). Only five tests but they are essentially just the worksheets just with some numbers changed. Rote memorization. Amazing and lectures, as well as just a good and fair individual.
VERY TOUGH GRADER, your grade is determined by 4 exams and 1 final the test itself isn't that difficult compared to other calc 2 classes. The material he teaches is pretty easy but if you lack good algebra skills this class will be very hard. He takes away points on very basic things also will have favoritism and doesn't really care for his class.
I took Griffith's 181 class and I would definitely recommend him for calc 2 or any math class he teaches. Your grade is solely determined by 5 tests, but the worksheets he uses helps a bunch!! Do not recommend skipping any of the lectures, or else you will miss a lot of material. The material itself is difficult, but he makes it easy to understand.
Had for Math 260, Fairly Easy, 4 Exams and only those exams, Exams are graded somewhat tough but you may earn a small amount of extra credit per exam, primarily lecture and then some amount of homework, occasional practice of problems but most are walk through mainly due to time constraint. Make sure to study before each exam.
Since day one, I knew Hugh Griffith was awesome. He is approachable, and his lectures are easy to follow. He color-codes his lectures and is always happy to answer your questions. Starting this semester, he started learning students' names to connect with us more. I recommend not skipping class, as you will miss a lot of material. Take him!
The class is exam-heavy, but the professor explains things clearly. Attend lectures and use resources like unstuckstudy AI for study prep - it really helps. Take it if you're solid in math, otherwise it can be a struggle.
Griffith is really good at explaining difficult concepts throughout MATH 180 & 181, which really helped me pass these classes in my first go. Homework is optional, with him only grading you on 4 tests & a final. He may use questions from the textbook, but he mainly makes his own homework, and he goes over some of the questions in class.
I couldn't have asked for a better professor. Professor Griffith breaks down difficult concepts easily, which made me understand the material easily. Your grade is solely determined by four exams and a final exam, which can be stressful. However, the exams mirror problems in his lectures and never have a tricky question. He wants you to succeed.
Professor Griffith explains concepts incredibly well, breaking them down clearly. The class is manageable: Griffith is always available, and grades focus on exams that reflect the homework and lecture problems. The way he structures the class makes it easier to balance focus with other challenging classes, like Phys-4a, which demand more attention.
The course is challenging (unless you're a math wizard), with an average GPA of 2.59 and 40% of students withdrawing or failing. Grades are based on 5 exams, so strong algebra skills are a must! Professor Griffith is a phenomenal lecturer who ALWAYS keeps the class engaging and fun, but if you have test anxiety, consider Childress or Brian Johnson.
Everyone's talking about Professor Hugh Griffith's ability to teach concepts well, but can we appreciate his insane, fast grading? He BLITZkriegs through the grading, and you will have your scores the next day. Britain would've collapsed in under 2 hours under his leadership.
One of the best professors I have ever had. His lectures were so clear and easy to follow, and he is incredibly helpful if you ever have any questions.
I owe him a slice of my paycheck once I'm employed. I worried that the class was too easy and would set me up for failure after I transferred to a harder uni. I'm at UCSD now, and everything he taught is coming back so effortlessly. His class builds incredible foundation and WILL set you up for success. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
I skipped Trig & Precalc, taking Griffith for Calc I and II and succeeded in his classes. His lectures ensured I built up solid foundations for future math-based courses. Be sure to review/master the lecture/hw problems outside of class, as they will be so similar to his exam ones. As others have said, Griffith does blitzkireg through the grading!
Best professor in the world!!!
Literally the goat. Everything is explained in a way that is easy to understand. If you do the homework you'll get an A on every test (grade is entirely composed of 4 exams and the final)
I just finished MATH181 another professor; this professor was so much better. His explanations were so clear and showed a passion for teaching. Homework matched tests, only thing that sucks is that your grade is 100% based on tests. I wish he taught higher up maths too and wasn't so test heavy.
Makes a tough subject approachable if you do the work. Grade is based on test performance but the tests are just like the homework. His notes are so clear you can learn even if you struggle to pay attention in class. Went on a weird offensive rant about homeless people. Will call you out publicly if you fall asleep in class or aren't working hard.
Best math prof I've ever had. Optional homework, but def do it because it's so similar to the tests. Only 4 tests and the final, so make sure to study. Very funny and talkative (loves talking about Dodger hot dogs), I wish I could take him again for 181, but it doesn't fit with my schedule. Easy A :)
No homework, good lectures, reasonable tests. You had one of the best teaching careers and prime. One of the best to ever do it. Enjoy retirement.
This class was hard, but the teaching method was A+. Only exams are graded, but using homework to practice, using his office hours, and using the homework as a study guide before exams, is key. The exams have stacks of multiple concepts built into some of the questions, so you need to really grasp the concepts being taught.
