Very intimidating but knowledgable of the subject. Helpful w/ final paper
Great overall teacher- but be prepared to handle his moodiness

The best English professor at DePaul. Had him as a teacher 4 times, & he changed my writing drastically, & he said I reminded him of his son!

He's hard as hell, but a nice teacher anyways. Nothing counts except for the last week, hes makes his directions a little unclear but i would probably take him again, hes just really hard.
keeps things interesting by swearing a lot. he's not that tough if you do the reading
Really strange guy--but very interesting. Smart in a disorganized way. Easy grader.
I went to the first day of class, was scared to death, and dropped it. Hes very intimidating. Maybe those that stayed got a lot out of it, but i couldnt. i couldnt keep his notes organized. too hard for me.
I took Dr. Ingrasci for a lot of classes and loved every one of them. My favorite was one about the modern hero's quest. He was very into the class and is an excellent teacher. However, business majors beware, he has a lot to say about them.
Dr. Ingrasci is cool as hell. He assigned very interesting and poignant stories. He might come across as intimidating, but what daygo doesn't? And he rips on North Shore people a lot, and is passionate about what he does. Take him.
Hes amazing. you will learn so much. and hes funny. and he cried when he saw madame butterfly.
Have had Dr. Ingrasci 4 times now, and he's, without a doubt, the best teacher in the DePaul English department. Not only does he care about a student's well being, but he also cares about making his material relevant and ALWAYS interesting.
He is one awesome professor! He is very passionate about what he does and is soo funny! TAKE HIM!!
One of two professors I've had that actually teaches something in the classroom and doesn't let banal graduate student comments go unchecked
The best professor I had at DePaul. Very challenging but helpful. He is so excited and knowledgeable about the subject matter, and it's easy to get an A if you just pay attention to lectures/notes! He really gets you thinking.
Ingrasci is the greatest teacher at DePaul--indeed he is the school's living legend. His courses are always interesting, always intelligent, and always worthwhile. He selects excellent/interesting readings (plenty of novels/stories!) Lots to read!
Easily the greatest teacher I have ever had. Unparalleled in passion, he can elucidate and express himself to a magnificent level of clarity. If you partake in the same joy of learning as he does in teaching, you will do well.
Easily the best at DePaul...and this coming from a finance student :) (he will have a few comments for business students). But an awesome prof, interesting, PASSIONATE! Take one of his classes, you won't be disappointed!
Dr. Ingrasci is an amazing person. Definitely take him if u can (waiting lists can be up to 30 people long) as a business major, his class really added to a side of education I was missing.
WOW! Passionate, knowledgeable and extremely interesting, not to mention intelligent. Great professor, have had him twice and have learned a lot both times. One of the top professors in the university.
I took three courses taught by Dr. Ingrasci twelve years ago. He is by far the finest instructor of my school years. It is just now that I'm realizing how much I learned in his classes.
One of the best professor's at DePaul. Very passionate and knowledgable. He is a great guy and actually reaches his students on more than a teacher-student level. Everyone should take one of his classes while at DePaul.

You all are crazy, Ingrasci is a foxy, foxy man!
Greatest professor that ever lived. I had the best class of my college experience in this with this guy. He's great. There are two things to do before dying, pay taxes and take a class with Hugh
Changed my life. Thank you, Dr. Ingrasci.
The man teaches Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, all through an english class. One of the best, if not THE best professor I have ever had. Take a class, and you'll come out looking at the world in a different angle.

Students who think this man is amazing do not get past his shock value. Most unchallenging class yet at DePaul. It's easy to get an A on everything since all you have to do is cater to his singular view point. The definition of static. Worst prof yet
Possibly the archetype of what a great professor should be. A consummate professional that will drive you to work your hardest. You can do well in this course with minimal effort, but you are only ripping yourself off. Teaching style is beyond innovative. Take this man's course!!!!!
If you prefer a professor who preaches as opposed to teaches, take Ingrasi. I do not understand why so many people think he's so great- he's at least passionate, but other than that he has nothing on some of the great teachers at depaul. It's scary to think he is the "best" in the english department
Intense. I actually wanted to do more than the minimum even thought it was only an elective for me. His classes teach students how to appreciate what we have and the privilage of going to college. When I think of college I'll think of Ingrasci.
Loved it.
he is different. i don't know about the best ever but i loved him and he gives amazing notes. he wants you to repeat what he teaches you in essays and on tests and can be a little rude and condescending if you are on his bad side. easy grader though.
Dr. Ingrasci will take you on an adventure everyday. He is fast-paced and exciting. He states a lot of things as fact-of-the-matter. I would encourage you to think twice and come to your own conclusions about these things but he has some brilliant ideas. This guy is the man.
One of the best teachers at DePaul. Can be easy if you do exactly what he says, but can be fun if you challenge him and call him on his b.s. Willing to help you with your grade if you show initiative and talk to him outside class. Incredibly opinionated but knowledgeable
He has too much knowledge for his own good, but it's great to soak up just a little of it. Not a good prof. for younger students, but excellent at the grad. level. He's a big movie buff so be prepared to watch several flicks. He picks good novels, some more shocking than others, that make u think
NUTS! That's all I can say. Swears more than a sailor and is not really approachable about things. The class is pretty easy just watch a ton of movies, and MOST (NOT ALL) aren't that bad. Good guy though Don't be scared!!
Fantastic prof. Very in your face teaching method. Tests can be tricky. Manages to relate everything to life.
Great! In your face. Save your questions for after class because he has a tight schedule. Don't be late! Ingrasci is great for students with ADD because he just keeps moving on.
If you want to be preached to rather than taught, this class is fine for you. There was no open discussion of class material. Orders were just barked at us. Otherwise, an easy class to do well in if you gave him exactly what he wanted. Unfortunate, given how interesting the class material was.
The prophet is good, but I call him the rock star. I learned more from him than the rest of my professors combined. He'll make you think about the world in a different way and you'll never read another book the same way--he'll give you the tools to truly decipher literature.
Difficult class to take over the summer, but you get credit fot a 300 level instead of 200. Ingrasci's a great lecturer, but prob not too good for younger peeps, or those with tude. He will force you to read more than ever in 10 weeks, but you walk out with a brain overflowing. This class really is a rehash of his Romanticism class, which is great.
You either love him or hate him. Regardless, he is an exceptional prof.
very challenging, but the best class I've taken yet. I learned so much from that man!
He comes off like a jerk, but he is great! He knew I was struggling with some of the stuff, and he was very understanding. He just wants you to TRY! He's unbelievably interesting if you can just get past what he wants you to see as his arrogance. He's brilliant, and he really cares about his students, even if he acts like a jerk sometimes. :)
He is one of the most interesting professors I've ever had. I really got alot out of his course, more than I ever expected. Probably one of the best professors at DePaul period! He is NO pushover, If you take him, expect to work hard. He can come off as a bit of jerk sometimes, and expect to read a ton.
By far the most amazing teacher I have ever had. Very strict and will pump you full of more information than you could even think about aquiring, but seriously a genius. TAKE HIS CLASSES!!! I took three and would love to be able to go back for more. Be on time. Be prepared. Be ready to read like a mother. He can teach you so much.
Dr. Ingrasci is an extremely intelligent man, he has tons of life experience and will teach you a lot about literature and life. He is very intense. Don't be late, and pay attention. He is awesome. Take his class.
Excellent instructor. He cares very much about his students and his material. If he's a tad self-centered, so what? You'll still learn tons and have a teacher who cares more about you, your future and your psyche than most of the others you've had. Take any class you can from him!!
Arrogant, Pompus, Solopistic old man..You will be lectured every class how you are not a dynamic person like he is; and how you are uncultured in the arts. He wants you to regurgitate his ideas and will not let you have a thought of your own. The tests consist of an opinon question that you have to answer with his opinion and use his words to prove
Except for the spelling errors, I agree with everything the person before me said.Arrogant, pompous and self-aggrandizing to the point where one suspects it is masking low-self esteem.Hard only in the sense that it is difficult to intuit exactly what another person thinks about a work. That said, he seems very nice outside of the classroom.
Intelligent, passionate, arrogant, egocentric. Ingrasci is capable of teaching you a plethora of things, but is it really teaching when his is the only applicable conception? Take him if you would rather be preached to than taught. I'll be getting a B or C b/c I chose to challenge his interpretations instead of being placative to satiate his ego.
You may learn about Dr. Ingrasci and how great he is in this class, but nothing exists outside his opinions. Sit through it, very interesting. If you approach each assingment as repeating what he said, no problem A. Yelling and banging on desks is irritating as all hell. Thinks he embodies his material but really just loves to talk about himself.
I'm surprised at some of the negative comments regarding Dr. Ingrasci. I found him to be a fantastic instructor, simply the best I've ever had. His lectures are riviting, and his choice in texts is superb. There is nothing "arrogant" about him whatsoever. He is accessible and friendly, and expects a lot from his students.
I hated this class the first time I took it, ended up dropping it. The second time I was a bit more serious and found it to be one of the best at DePaul. He's a fascinating professor, who will keep you riveted if the topic interests you at all. He's very intense so if you're overly sensitive, you might get offended. Very accessible out of class.
Great ideas and themes. Not afraid to be controversial.
I heart Hugh Ingrasci--he is awesome. A true gift to the DePaul community. I have had him twice now and wish I could take him again. Do yourself a favor and take a class with this wonderful professor, I guarantee you will learn a lot.
Very intense teaching style, class discussion is wildly encouraged if you have something intelligent to say. Down to earth professor who instills a sense of duty to humankind. great choice in movies/films. very knowledgeable and accessible and excited to talk with students one on one!
I had him for my Sophmore Seminar- Multiculturalism/Film. Unfortunately, it was the only class I took with him. I saw him again in my senior year, & he took the time to ask me about my future. My friends & I still joke about him, & we graduated about 4 years ago. Take his classes if you can. He's one of the good ones. Tough, but inspirational.
I took Dr. Ingrasci's class 9 years ago and I still consider him to be one of the greatest, most inspirational, influential and dynamic teachers I have ever had. Reading Poe, Hawthorne and Whitman without recalling Ingrasci's lectures is impossible. He is one of the reasons why I teach English today and why I have such a passion for literature!
This is the class he was born to teach. Show enthusiasm for the subject and try to understand things the way he does. Some of his teaching style is questionable but honestly, if you haven't taken Ingrasci and you're an English major, or need to take an English class, you MUST take him. He's SO passionate about his material!
Awsome Prof! He knows something about everything and you'll learn alot. Really funny, straight to the point. No bs, tells it like it is. Very helpful and cares about his students. All you need to do is come to class and try.
Great!
this class was nothing like i expected. it was pretty interesting but at times it can be very intense (100+pages of reading b/w tues & thurs). the exams can be intimidating but it is mostly regurgitation. he's definitely not lying when he says "you won't pass this class unless you come to every class." class discussion is essential to passing.
This has been the best class and best teacher I've had at DePaul. He makes class interesting and fun, but also learn A LOT. We had to read 3 books (good books so it wasn't hard) and take quizes on them. Also had to rent a lot of movies and watch to discuss in class, but watched a lot of movies in class too. Final paper on a movie of your choice.
He's a fairly smart, but he's also incredibly condescending and dominates lectures. Students are almost never encouraged to participate, unless it is to answer a near-rhetorical question to which he has an incredibly specific answer to. His handouts and tests are also very messy and unorganized, and a lot of time is spent w/ movies w/ no relevance.
i've taken ingrasci for a bunch of classes. the dude is completely insane in all of the best ways. tells great stories, totally realistic, kind of a ranter, but it's good. trust me. take him just to witness the entity that is hugh ingrasci. if nothing else, it'll be a class that keeps your interest the entire time.
Don't be fooled by the previous comments. He's intelligent, but does not encourage discussion. Regurgitate info. Not approachable! Swore at me when I asked him to explain an essay prompt. Will not meet with students outside of class! Not helpful! If you want to think for yourself, don't take this class! I got an A-, but it dropped my 4.0 GPA.
Best Professor I ever had. May not always encourage discussions but presents info in a way that is helpful. Exams make you think and the papers are no less demanding. If you like to draw your own conclusions his classes are for you. Text books are always used. Will meet with you if you need help but if you listen you won't need it.
Too many texts and not enough time to discuss/process them. After a 10 pg. paper was due, we wrote an intense prepared-final. Definitely the hardest grad class I've taken.
I thought Ingrasci was incredible. Cool English majors never want to take another prof again after they've had him. He gets so worked up that he starts foaming a little at the mouth-- and that's awesome. He is pretty aggressive and doesn't really count on student participation, but that's fine. We all can learn from Prof Ingrasci.
Southern Lit. Have heard he is great for Film Noir but often got confused about which book we were discussing in this class. Dominates lectures. Relies too much on movies to take up class time--an hour spent watchign different people sing Amazing Grace? How is that relevant?
He makes you work hard, but you're rewarded for it in the end. Expect to use all books and assignments. Great guy!
I am a member of the Ingrasci cult movement...while I was in college I took five of his classes. Now that I have graduated, my students hear Ingrasci stories all the time. Whenever I begin to feel burned out I stop by to visit him. He is welcoming. Bull to anyone who says he isn't (clearly you haven't stopped into his office). Take his class.
had ingrasci 4 years ago & still think about his lessons. took him undergrad 5 times & in grad school. i still e-mail him to this day. the man changed my life. he awakened my love of literature--so much so that i'm now a high school english teacher. his lectures are so riveting that i've cried on the DL in class. no one is better.
I've taken him 4 times. Yes he can be intimidating at first. But sometimes you just look at him and think he's the sweetest old man. I love his class, he really keeps you on your toes. He likes to curse and yell (not at anyone). Take him, he's an interesting man. You won't regret it. Easy grader
Hugh Ingrasci is the best prof. in the entire school at depaul, bar none. its amazing how much of a cult following he has. but with good reason, intense, interesting, and overall makes you care about literature.
Somebody give this man an award. Yes, intimidating at first. After that, just a wonder. Great man, great teacher. I thought I loved literature before his classes. He showed me what it was to live it.
The only down point I would say is that he is a little jarring at times and if you disagree with a reading that he has of a book you are wrong; He is very Static (once you take his class you'll get that joke). With that in mind I still say that he is the best English Prof I've had at Depaul, just not very forgiving on opinion you'll never be bored.
This guy is ridiculous. He is so vague about what he wants, yet is so demanding about being specific. He will not help you at all so don't even think about asking because you'll probably just piss him off. You'll get a decent grade after being completely depressed by listening to one of his "I hate the world" lectures. Buzz Kill. Don't recommend!!
I have graduated from DePaul 2 years ago in English and I can say that the reason I teach the way I do today is because of this man. Try as hard as you can to take his class as part of your education at DePaul. You only get one chance to live his great class do it now!
Phenomenal, brilliant, sublime. While Dr. Ingrasci's ability to make us think may seem comensurate to his ability to scare his more timid students, make no mistake, he is without a doubt thee most inspirational professor I've ever witnessed. While some may find his oratory dogmatic, the man is living evidence that genius is often tumultuous.
Genius. One of the FEW people I have come across in my life who can tell it like it is, and still maintain heart. He is the reason I teach today.
Self absorbed, endlessly relates works to his own life. Over emphasizes his own wordings and interpretations. When reading a work out loud he litterally adds words to it as he sees fit.
I had Ingrasci three tomes as an undergrad. Now, that I am in Grad school and almost finished I can without a doubt conclude Ingasci is the Prof. that I inspire to be. Arguable at times and certainly bias, he is a true animal when it comes to lit. If you don't take him you are missing out on a true human experience.
Very intelligent. A bit eccentric. Has an unshakable grip on the classroom agenda (a bit controlling), so don't expect it to be lackadaisical. Funny. If you work hard and show interest and respectfulness, you can stay on his good side. He's just as concerned with teaching about morality and the human experience as he is about teaching English.
He makes you pay $30 for readings he prints and puts into a book for you.He gives them to you the first day of class then tells you he needs the money because he's paying for his (adult) children's schooling and apartments. Says there aren't enough courses at DePaul based on values and so this class emphasizes values. Have to rent/watch nine movies
Ingrasci is crazy. In both good and bad ways. I found it a little hard to understand his train of thought, but he was so eccentric that I enjoyed his classes. He also swears up a storm every class. You'll do well on his tests if you use the buzz-words that he puts on the study guides. He's not my favorite professor in the department, but he's fine
The best instructor & friend I ever had -- from my B.A. through to my M.A.
Are you all serious? He had interesting material.. but he didn't act professional towards any students. He swore WAY too much, even for a university professor. And 30 dollars for some paper? One, no way in hell. Two, taking money from students is illegal. He's smart obviously, but also a tool.
This class was awesome. With Ingrasci, you either love him or you hate him. If you're open to changing your views on life then take him. If you're set in your ways- don't. Really easy class, he just lectures the whole time and we watch movies! He's a really brilliant professor who actually cares. Paper and final. That's it!
I liked this class and the professor. We had a midterm, final, and paper. Just show up to class (don't miss or else he'll call you ha), listen to the lectures, and be open to learning a new way of thinking that is different than the norm. The $30 packet he gives you is like the guide to the class. I recommend getting the books from the library.
I took most of Dr. Ingrasci's American lit classes as an undergrad at DePaul. They were all amazing! He is a very entertaining and knowledgeable lecturer. He does not use a text book - just the original work plus a thick book of lit crit articles and the like.
He cares that his students whether or not his students are absorbing the material but he is a "my way or the highway" professor, and for an English class that doesn't allow you much room for interpreting readings because if you don't agree with him you fail. I think he probably used to be a good professor but he is starting to go senile.
Came highly recommended, but I have to say I was disappointed. Insightful, but NOT good at getting the students to interpret literature, because he does it for them! His class structure and grading are fair, but I fail to see the allure from people who took more classes from him--unless they like being spoon-fed!
super intense. knows a LOT about the short stories/novels we cover. he literally does all the analysis for you except for the final paper and final exam (which are the only 2 grades for the whole course, just warning you). i think people have mixed feelings about him but i really liked this class.
I believe that he was once a good professor, but I feel as if he is losing interest or something. If you do not like blindly following someone else's opinions don't take this class, because you are graded on how well you can reiterate him. We watched a lot of videos. Make sure you pay attention to "buzz words."
He definitely knows his stuff, but all he does is tell you what to write down, there is no discussion and his midterm and final are not easy. If you want to do well you have do the readings and go to class. He calls you if you don't go, so don't take him unless you want to be lectured at and watch pointless films in class every other day.
Coming back nearly 10 years after graduating to rate Dr. Ingrasci highly, because he had that big of an affect on me. Disappointed to see "easy" translate to good. You have to work for it, but if you want to come away from a course with an understanding of how these texts can affect the way you think and live as a HUMAN BEING, take the class.
Dr. Ingrasci is unquestionably one of the utmost positively instrumental professors during my enrollment. Thank you for exposing me to a wealth of priceless literature and sculpting me into the "PrizeWriter" I am today. Due blessings to you Dr. Ingrasci. A+++++
Very glad to see that Hugh I. is still so brilliant & idiosyncratic. His film/reading selections stretch students capacities if you like a challenge, youll learn so much. The reviews ring true. Hugh I. inspired & motivated me in my College & Life experiences. Do the work & youll fondly remember his class decades later, just as I am doing now!
