This prof is awesome. He is funny and is genuinely interested in the material. Be prepared to read your textbook a lot outside of class in order to keep up with his 10 minute, weekly quizzes. Keep up on the chapter readings in the "silly bus". He uses the material right from the textbook and his lessons for tests, so do your homework!
Great Prof. This class isnt a free ride you need to pay attention and read the book but its worth it. I learned more from this man than any other class this semster. I would recommend this prof 100% just dont go expecting this to be an easy intro course. Awesome awesome awesome.
*Unbelievable* prof! He is so passionate about ANTH that you cant help but care too. He wants you to "think anthropologicaly", but also to be a better student, so he doesn't only use MC tests. Writing and research assignments in a 100-level course! High grades are possible (he gives *great* written feedback), but you need to earn it. Plus, so cute
Amazing prof! He is very passionate about Anthropology and it really shines through in his lectures! I would definitely take another class with him.
Hugh is one of my all-time favourite professors. He has plenty of experience in the field, is extremely knowledgable and personable and is always well prepared before class. For the higher level classes he doesn't do overhead notes so attendance is necessary and attention must be paid. AWESOME teacher!!!
he's awesome, awesome, awesome.
He is absolutely wonderful!! Is extremely clear and will do everything he can to help you out! Is interesting and exciting all at the same time! WONDERFUL! take with him if you can
LOVE HUGH. He is such a sweet guy and extremely helpful. He has some amusing little anecdotes which are really helpful in making you remember course material. He's joked about "getting his chili pepper rating up" on this site, but obviously everyone else agrees with me as he is already listed as "hot".
One of my more engaging classes. Actually made a class that I was dreading pretty interesting. Feedback was very detailed and helpful, but not condescending in the least. To me, he is the definition of a good teacher.
Great Prof. Excellent speaking voice, very engaging and fun. Perfect prof for an intro class. You do have to do the work though, but there is nothing unexpected on the test. I would suggest getting into his class :)
Hugh makes this class very interesting. Always clearly stating what he sets out to teach each class, well organized, fair marker, easy enough tests, allows discussion and opinions, has great projects and shows a lot of videos. If that doesn't sound like an A+ professor I don't know what does.
It doesn't matter what course he teaches -- it is fantastic. Don't get me wrong, they are definitely not easy courses. He has high expectations, but provides incredible feedback (I got two single-spaced typed pages for one of my lab reports), and will do just about anything to help you when you need it. Inspiring and interesting.
Hugh is kinda sneaky hard. He's super relaxed, friendly and helpful, but also super demanding. I just got an essay back from him that was *covered* in red ink, along with a two-page single-spaced critique dismantling my entire paper. Sadly, he was totally right - it was a lame paper. I wish all my profs gave as good input . Still an awesome prof
I don't think McKenzie is that hard. Exams are straightforward, and in one class, he let the class design the final exam (we made it too hard, lol!). The trick is just that he is tough to "fool" in written & oral assignments. If you make a claim, you'd better have a reference, some data, or some sort of evidence. If not, expect to hear about it.
This class was very hard. So much info. and many terms to memorize but Hugh was very helpful. There was an open lab if anyone needed the extra help learning bones, etc. He gets to the point on his lectures, which I like. Overall, go to class and I highly recommend him as a prof.
Great Prof! Super helpful and engaging. Got an A
BEST PROF EVER! Very fun, helpful and informative.
such a great prof!
Hugh is one of the best Anthropology profs, but this is a hard class, don't be fooled. The subject matter is awesome, and you get to go to the zoo. It is the most interesting class I have ever taken, BUT you need to work hard and take time with your papers. The more you put into this class, the better your grade.
Hugh Is Amazing! Best Prof ever. I get sad when the class ends. Great class- he delivers the content so that you get it. right away. Great Job! I wish he could transfer to the U of A next year just so I can have him as a prof.
Hugh is amazing!! Best prof I've ever had. He loves what he's teaching, and it draws the student into his lectures. Class attendance is mandatory, but it is well worth it. Tests are hard, but he gives you a study guide, so that makes it a little better. I'm going to miss his class so much!
Such a great prof. Uses excellent examples, great sense of humour, and his personal interest in anthropology really comes through. He doesn't mark too hard but you can't go into exams blind and expect to do any good. Definitely get in his class if you're taking anthropology.
This was by far my favorite class because of the prof. His sense of humor makes the class interesting, and information is presented logically. Labs are perfectly scheduled for optimum learning. His outlines for review are CRUCIAL to a good mark on exams. They help you understand his exams and what he expects. If I could give a 6 I would.
Pretty awesome dude, Earned his Hot chili pepper during the Osteology section of the class where he shows off his patella. YOu must attend class and the labs to pass the class.
Amazing prof, he is absolutely hilarious! Rearranged my whole next year schedule just to be in one of his classes again. The outlines are the key to doing well in his class and I'd suggest not missing any class because what he says in class is important for exams.
This man is a ginger genius. Be involved in the class and the discussions and make yourself known to him. I didn't find him to be a tough marker, but on things that I did well, classmates got lower marks. (I got a 95 and friend got 60). Go to class, read the book and pay attention.
Love him! He is by far the most interesting prof I have this term and he always keeps the class engaged. He definitely makes you excited about Anthropology because of his own excitement. And because he reviews each topic at the beginning of every class, it makes it difficult to forget the information.
Definite Professor crush on this guy.He is so excited about Anthropology, and really knows his stuff. Even if the material doesn't intrest you, this class will because he is Hillarious and very engaging. Make sure you go to class and do the readings and you'll do great.
Race & Racism class was totally not what I expected, but is really great. The prof is hard in the sense that he does not want you to just memorize and regurgitate on mult.choice tests, but to get some anthro concepts and apply them in cool assignments. Really interesting class and a prof that really cares about your learning
Was very interested in this class. His exams are all written and he expects quite a bit of detail. You must go to lectures as his notes are not posted on blackboard. Gives study guides for each exam that are extremely helpful. Had a hard time learning in class, but when I talked to him one on one he explained concepts very well. Not an easy A
best teacher ever!! classes are interesting and he explains everything really well, i would recommend this teacher to all of my friends. put in little work and got an easy A
Best prof so far in university. He always reviews material from last class and posts up helpful study guides. He for sure knows what he's teaching and makes the course interesting. He's very helpful, always responds to emails. I highly recommend him!
Dr. Mckenzie is by far the best prof I have had in any of the social sciences fields. He made anthro exciting with his passion and his willingness to help everyone and take questions. He is very intelligent with tons of experience. His tests are a little hard and you defiantly need to know the material. But that is what it should be likealways
Dr. McKenzie was always so into his lectures, which makes it so much fun to sit through. I loved his class and would totally take another class with him.
Really terrific guy. I learned so much this term, and I look at race differently now. Is not hard in the sense that he give lots of very small 'just-in-time' assignments to help prep you for lectures (easily graded), but he is hard in the sense that he expects you to be able to really back up exam answers with specific evidence and case studies.
Dr. McKenzie is a very helpful and energetic teacher. He is passionate about anthropology which makes the course fun to learn. Prior to taking this course, I actually had no idea what anthro was. After taking this introductory course with him I'm for sure going on with anthro. His assignments are hard so pay attention and do all the work he assigns
Hugh is great! He is very entertaining and passionate about the material. Asks for lots of feedback on assignments, quite a bit of work in this class but if you're interested in anthropology then take it. Only downfall was the midterm was all written. But to each their own. He's great.
Does not post "useful" slides on blackboard. GPA killer. He is a hard marker. Essays required a rediculous amount of time and effort. Exam wording must be perfect to get full marks. Nice guy yes... but not 4.9 nice. At the most I'd give him a 3.5
Mckenzie a GPA killer? Hardly. The study guides contain the exam questions, and he gives the final exam essay question ahead of time. It is true the lecture slides can't be used as a substitute for skipping class, but I like them -too many other classes with "useful slides" just have tons of text that the prof reads during lecture. No complaints.
Not only is Hugh a charming, ruggedly handsome man, he is also a fabulous teacher. This class was HARD but Hugh made it fun and whenever I went to him with problems he was as helpful as he could be. Looking forward to taking more classes with him. Pay attention, go to open lab times and you will do well.
Must attend class because he doesn't have structured notes he just talks and you have to try and write it all down. This can be difficult but pays off for the exams. The exams are really easy because he gives a list of potential questions beforehand and just chooses from those. Exams are written but he's a super easy marker.
He was an okay prof. Didn't post notes. Left us to fend for ourselves with study guides with like eighty questions. Nice guy though
I really enjoyed this prof. He made me think about race much differently. I learned a lot, and never felt intimidated to ask questions. He really seemed to care that we learned something important, rather than just had to memorize things for exams.
Hugh is an amazing prof! He works hard to keep his lectures clear and organized. He provides excellent study guides that, when completed, secure solid grades. Excellent prof, Macewan's best anth prof by far.
One of my favourite profs at gmac. His classes are interesting and it is easy to do well on his assignments. Tests require thorough studying but they are manageable and completely reasonable. I really enjoyed this class.
VERY GOOD. In class was interesting, funny, and full of information. He would point out in class what will be on the test and what we need from the textbook. I didn't do very well- so when I went in to talk about my exam he went over it with me and pointed out what I needed to work on. He's very kind! DONT BE LATE, NO LOUD FOOD.
Awesome prof! Definitely recommend any class with him!
This is my second class with him and he is definitely my favourite prof. I really enjoy his classes. He is very interesting to listen to, however class is mandatory as he doesn't teach exactly from the textbook, which I like. Very helpful and super nice guy. 10/10
This professor CHANGED ME!! He is absolutely amazing, I even volunteered for an 8am lab just to have him. Notes are very very good, gives out study guides, recognizes students and encourages critical thinking without letting you fail. He wants his students to do well and it feels great when you do.
Hugh is a nice enough guy. His exams are pretty tough and he tends to be a hard marker. The study guides were okay but a little much for a 100 level class.
Expects you to be on top of class materials and expects hard work out of his students. Very enthusiastic about his subjects.
It is only a few weeks in, but I have to say, I am totally digging this intro class. I leave every single lecture thinking about the world differently than when I went in. The material isn't hard, exactly, but it isn't a straight-forward memorization kind of class. You definitely need to put in some work. He is great.
Hugh had clear lectures that complimented the textbook, where it fell short he made up for it. I changed my major because his lectures were amazing and very interesting. Every time I needed help either at office hours or through email, he got back to me reasonably quickly and made sure I understood 100% Highly recommend even if you only need credit
Hugh is the definition of a great prof. His lectures are great cause he doesn't teach straight from the textbook. He makes class fun with his jokes he is hilarious. For tests he gives you every question ahead of time so there's no excuse to not do well. Loves talking to his students out of class. Can't say much bad about Hugh highly recommend him.
He's enthusiastic about the material but you have to take notes as he is lecturing so you always need to be paying attention to what he's saying. He also gives really long study guides which are helpful, but can't be done last minute. Tests were hard and all written, he's a tough marker as well. If you want a GPA booster, don't take this class.
Hugh is the reason I chose anthro as my major. He really inspires further insight into concepts covered within anthropology. I found his marking to be very fair, if you put a bit of work in then you should have no problem getting a good mark. One downside is that you have to go to class because his slides are pretty bare, but he makes it worth it.
Hugh does a fantastic job of explaining concepts and keeps my interest throughout the entire class, which is nice considering that you can't miss his classes. The notes he posts are just headings of what he discusses so you need to show up. He marks really fair and accepts point form on tests when you run out of time. Would HIGHLY recommend him.
Hugh is easily my favourite prof. He's inspiring, and he is wildly passionate about anthropology and teaching. He marks hard, but fair. If you put the work in and you get a good grade, you'll feel so rewarded, and he gives very generous feedback on your assignments so there's no reason you can't improve. Just don't miss lectures and you're golden.
His lectures are amazing, and he clearly loves what he's teaching. His tests are all written, and can be a bit tricky to complete on time, but he accepts point form if you have to. He posts study guides, which have all the stuff that will be on the test, so there are no surprises. He marks fair and provides great feedback I can't say anything bad.
-Lectures are great but hard to take notes. -Skips around from concept to concept, constantly revising direction of course -Gives study guides for tests but they are insanely detailed, unrealistic to complete for students with a full course load -Treats class in a juvenile fashion; very similar to high school teacher in manarisms and method
I really enjoyed this prof. His lectures were thorough and he's very clear and concise with what he expects. He's intelligent and takes the subject material seriously. He doesn't lecture off of slides, but he also doesn't take attendance for grades. Sample questions on the study guides. It's the only class that I wish was longer. Amazing
Hugh can sometimes crack a laugh during our lecture after lunch ,even most of the time he fails. He doesn't lecture like a normal teacher rather he just has a conversation with us to teach us the content. Would like him for the rest of my years here :)
Dr. Mckenzie is a great prof! His lectures are interesting and overall the course is not really that difficult. He gave assignments allowing you to boost your grade and when it came to test time he provided incredibly helpful reviews by basically giving you the exam questions before hand. Strongly recommend. :)
Hugh is honestly a great professor he is really fair with midterms and will never ask something he didn't mention or made you work on. He is hilarious and very straight forward, definitely cares about how well you do in the class and gives great feedback. You need to come to class to take notes because his slides will only have tittles on them
Hugh is one of the best profs I've ever had. He gives you all the questions that are going to be on the test ahead of time, then on the test let's you pick which ones you want to answer. Nothing gets posted online though so you do have to go to class. He makes the lectures pretty interesting though and is super chill.
Hugh was an awesome prof, very knowledgeable of the subject and clearly enjoys what he does. His study guides ask basically the same questions as the exams although you need to know them in major detail as each question is about a page of writing - so if you know everything on the guide you'll basically be good for the exams
Hes awesome, all the exams are the same as the midterm, dont really need a textbook
I had Hugh in 2nd year. He is very detailed in what he is expecting and gives you study guides that word for word explain what kind of answers he's looking for. His exams are tough, but even when I didn't finish my midterm and wrote my entire essay in bullet points he still gave me a 90%. He's looking for what you know, and if you can show that.
Need to know the material from both the lectures and the readings for the exams. Midterms and finals are written only, but he is fair in the sense that he does "do one of these 4 questions". Gives good feedback, and is a fair marker for a first year class. Must attended lectures and do the reading to get a good grade in the class.
Awesome prof!! Loved him and would love to have him for my later Anthro classes.
The last portion of material after the first midterm is not anywhere in the text. He jumps from topic to topic, is very confusing to keep up with all the material. He does not mark easy on exams. Incredibly high expectation on exams, unfair considering how fast he goes in lectures. Would never take another class with him.
Best professor ever! By far my favourite. He doesn't lecture AT you, he invokes a conversation WITH you. He's very intelligent, which shows in his expertly crafted lectures and assignments. Very effective teaching methods, and extremely inspirational! He's hilarious too, especially if you love puns. Most passionate Anthropology prof here.
I've had two classes with Hugh now and he is without a doubt the best prof I've ever had. He has super clear expectations for assignments, has phenomenal study guides for exams, and is a good lecturer. He tests more on the lectures rather than from the text. So long as you actually study and try, you'll do really good with him and his class!
great lab prof- fast to reply to emails and answer questions. Most pple bombed his labs but its easy- follow the format i got 90 on both. He legit told me its about the format- follow it step by step which he provides and youll ace it.
Outstanding! I'm in my last year but needed and elective and Hugh made me wish I took my anthro classes! One of the best lecturers out of profs I've had. Treats first year students with so much respect. I'd say he is the most caring prof I've come across. He reassured students during a difficult time which I think is very important for first years!
Hugh made this class super understandable. He is so kind and caring, and really wants his students to succeed. He gives the pool of questions for the midterm and final ahead of time, so the expectations are very clear. Be warned: you do need to show up as the notes are lecture based, but it kept the class super fun and interesting.
By far my favorite class of the year! You need to show up to class and read the textbook as he does not post notes online and when he does it's super vague. Will give you the midterm and final before exam date, but you need to be very specific with answers or you will fail and he won't care as you will have the test for minimum 1 week to study.
He didn't really teach us anything, so you need the textbook cause that's what the quizzes are based on. He is also VERY particular for the final essay/project
Hugh is the nicest guy, he is incredibly approachable during the lab which is important when you want to ask questions to understand the material. I had the best time in each of his labs, I learned so much. Not gonna lie he is super technical when marking assignments, and he admitted that, but its only to help us in the future, which it did!
Hugh was such a pleasure to have. I found his lectures super entertaining and wanted to attend them. Going into anthropology, I did not have much interest in, but he made it very interesting. midterm is very fair and the two assignment stake awhile but other then that if you try hard you will get a good grade.
Dr. McKenzie was not my personal lab instructor, but he guest lectured in my class, and he graded my lab report. His lecture about race was super engaging, and he encouraged thoughtful discussion. His feedback on my lab report was also super clear and helped me on my next one. I hope to actually take a class of his in the future!
Hugh is so great at what he does. He seems to enjoy teaching as much as he enjoys anthropology, and he wants everyone to do well. He gives detailed exam study guides/rubrics for assignments and has no problem giving A or A+ if you follow them. Even though it was an 8am winter class, he always created a positive and welcoming vibe in the room.
Dr. McKenzie is one of my favourite professors at MacEwan University! I had the opportunity to take his Anthropology class during the spring semester, and it was one of the most engaging courses I have ever taken. I learned so much in his class and his lectures are interesting. Quite easy as long as you attend class and pay attention!
fun and caring guy who KNOWS what he is talking about which helps make the lectures that much more understandable and bearable. exams are fair and well structured, same with the course.
