DO NOT take this guy for logic! Very hard, unclear, and you will get lost fast! People walked out at the final. Lots of homework, based on a computer disk program. Expensive book and disk. However, will hook you up with a C if you get 100% on all homework

Highly intelligent, you will learn in this class. Such a cute man, loves Italy, tells lame jokes but funny anyway! Lecture and Discussion were always interesting and helpful. I thoroughly enjoyed the class!
DO NOT TAKE FOR LOGIC. quirky guy, lame, lame, lame jokes, which only he laughs at, but laugh to humor him. Easy to do well on homework, not too bad to get a B or C, but in Logic, don't count on getting an A. Looks like he went through some kind of crisis
You'd have to be a madman not to take his course for the Honors Seminar. His jokes are really lame, but hey, it beats nothing. He plays dress-up for some lectures.
This man should have gone into showbusiness, not teaching. He loves to perform. The plus side is that it keeps you awake, but he can also be fairly cocky and even obnoxious at times.
Loved his joviality and passion, but he often went off topic, especially when it came to Iraq.
Make sure you read the text. He clarifies the text in class. He is very funny and will talk about random things that are offtopic. Make sure to ask question -- he will answer them.

What a great guy! Loves what he does, and it comes through in his teaching. Can get off topic, but very fun to listen to. Need to know your stuff though!
Knows his philosophers. Dresses up for class, in costume sometimes. Goes off on tangents. Very liberal. Interesting and easy to follow lectures ... even if you haven't read. But read!
Miller's awesome. He's really fun and simply brilliant. He explains things very well.
In Honr 101, you better be able to think the way the profs want you to, period. If you aren't cut out for analyzing books with little to go on, avoid this class. Most lectures are dull.
too cute!!!!!
Not a bad class overall, but started the class by explaining all of the non-related research he has worked on... I was not particularly interested in how smart he was in OTHER subjects.
An extremely smart man. He does have favorites. Good essay grading, helpful comments and fair.
Do not listen to what the other people say. He is a very good teacher!
A very nice professor who cares about his students. I enjoyed taking him this semester for PHIL 120.
He's as smart as Emmanuel Levinas and as funny as Robin Williams.
His lectures are fine, but definitely do not take him for discussion. He needs to get off his high horse, stop showing off his knowledge of every subject in the world, and actually teach/discuss the material. Discussion time turns into his personal show.
Miller can actually make logic interesting. The analogies and stories he brings to class are a nice break from the everyday grind of this subject. He uses an online HW program that lets you resubmit your work until you are happy with the grade, a big help
Paper grading Nazi!!! Very picky. If you don't believe in God-don't tell him. Will hold against you. Very personable outside of class though. The class itself is okay and he tries to make it interesting but it doesn't always work.
I think that he grades to hard. IT'S A PHILOSOPHY CLASS NOT AN ENGLISH CLASS, HE TAKES OF A WHOLE LETTER GRADE JUST FOR GRAMMAR
Went off on left-wing tangents sometimes and often days I would learn nothing in his discussion. He is hot though, with that peacoat and beret. Nonetheless, I actually regretted not staying in Librett's discussion.
miller is an arogent self absorbed **** pig who thinks he is God's greatest gift to the world. I'm not denying that he is an incredibly gifted man, but there are better ways of conveying that gift. hard grader, crazy about grammer, shuts u down in class if you dont agree with him.lectures well
only had him for hon101/102 lec and he seemed like a really nice person and his lectures were very interesting. Class is hard as hell but if ur (pre-med)/phil/theo/english/hist go for it kuz it will help out.Learn how 2 read fast quickly!!! Speed Reading!
Hugh is quite the smashing fellow. Very urban and proper. Class was tough, not for lazy people. I however am not the former and did well. You learn alot but you must work
He is very nice in person, but that said don't take his discussion: tangents, often political, no help at all with material. Socialist, pope-hater, very full of self, off the deep end in my opinion. Do not write anything other than what you know he wants to hear.
Doesn't explain things very well at all. Ask him a question and he'll talk for 15 minutes and not answer it. He also doesn't check his email over the weekend, so if you have a question on a paper take him up on his offer to call him.

The man's a damned genius, and he always sets up online chats and study sessions, and if you want help from him, he's more than willing to put in extra effort to help you understand the material.
Discussions weren't always the most productive, but one thing you can learn from him is how to write. Grades harshly, but fairly- if you go and talk to him and really listen, he will help you. I would recommend being very committed to this class- you will learn more the more time you put in. A problem is he's busy so not always available

Very bad teacher for logic. He just goes through the material as if we already knew it. Online homework is a lot more difficult than that material covered in class. Don't take him if you like having good grade.
DO NOT TAKE! This guy sucks, he will not teach you at all he will just do the problem in front of you in about 2 seconds and expect you to understand it. STAY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!
Took him for logic and it was a nightmare. The homework is unnecessarily difficult at times. He does not explain anything in class, just skims over it as if we were reviewing. He is extremely condescending and loves to bash conservatives. If you are taking logic definitely look elsewhere.
Although he is very intelligent, he is a ridiculously HARD grader and completely marks up papers simply because you did not write it his way. He is too picky for grammer. I am a good student and had lots of difficulty with his class. If you are taking honors i would suggest another professor.
This man is a nightmare for Logic. Is very condescending and smug if you ask him for help, expects you to understand after him doing the example problem on the board in a second. Homework online is much harder than in the book. Studied the material and would still do bad on the homework. Ended up withdrawing from his class b/c i couldn't stand him!
Professor Miller is a very intelligent man, however I believe it gets to his head sometimes. He is a very picky grader and the material is hard. He briefly skims through the problems acting like we know everything already. I would advise not to take him.
His homework is nothing but hard busy work that takes hours on end. He thinks we already know all the answers and he is very hard to approach. All of his homework is done electronically so there are usually technological problems that get in the way of already hard homework (at least throught what I have experienced). I would suggest staying away.
Miller is a really fun guy, but as Logic is concerned this class is hard! The first half of the semester is really easy, and then it gets really difficult. You have to work REALLY hard to get a good grade. He's a nice guy, can sometimes be helpful. If you are good at proofs then you shouldn't have a problem in this class.
I really enjoyed his Honors discussion section. He's by far the best lecturer of the Honors professors and while the discussion is more of a second lecture based on what he personally thinks, he really knows his stuff. Despite what some say, he's a great guy and a fair grader who wants you to do well.
HUGH IS THE BEST! I loved him so much haha, hes so ridiculous! he was like making sex jokes for like 5 minutes it was SO awkward. The class was pretty cool cause everything is online so you can work together a little bit... or a lot. you MUST ATTEND CLASS! he teaches you everything but you have to be there to learn it.
I really wish I came here first and read his reviews. All of the negative ones are right. The online homework is sooo much harder and he doesn't go over enough material in class. For your own sake, STAY AWAY!
Wow, I could sit here and blast him for being arrogant, conceited, and pompous, but that is not necessary. His logic class is terrible, no question about it. He explains nothing and unless you really have a nack for it you are screwed. He went to Yale and lets you feel like you are taking up his precious time whenever you go to him for help. Run!
If you need to take logic, try not to take it with HM. He is very pompous. His lectures on formal logic are mediocre at best. He does skim through the material in class. When you get to proofs, he'll just do a few on the board and expect you to understand it in 2 mins or less. Not very helpful, unless you're a cute girl. Seriously. He's a ****.
Not helpful at all and thinks he is smarter than everybody else. I wish I never took his class
not a hard class if you attend every class and take notes. you have to go to class or else your lost! his powerpoints are basic and he lectures way more than what the slide says. take notes on EVERYTHING he says. 3 essays, not hard if you took good notes. BECARFUL WITH GRAMMAR! he takes of 1% off every mistake! can turn an A paper into a B.
Good teacher. Good class. Not for the lazy. A lot of reading, involving rereading simply to understand. Gives enjoyable lectures and has very extensive power points but if you're willing to put in the work (which you should be), it is a great class with a great professor
Heavy reliance on books which are difficult to read through even with commentary. His lectures are very helpful, his power points are not. Extremely wise and knowledgeable man... overly pick about grammar mistakes. He's very nice and is willing to help outside of class!
Great teacher. Smart, funny, helpful and always willing to hear you out. Lectures are insightful and he is great about relating the material to students.
Philosophy confuses me. For all the people like me, Hugh Miller is the best teacher to learn ethics from. He explains the texts clearly in the lectures and if you still have problems, go to his office hours and he'll give you individual attention. He is wonderful. On the papers he does take up to 10 pt. off on grammar and he is a hard grader.
He's a pretty good teacher if you understand the material. I didn't get any of the material and I still managed a C. Theres 3 papers, 1 test, and a final. His grading system is awesome: I got a 54 on the test and it was a C. He's funny, and good.
This guy is ridiculous!! He is so arrogant, thinks he's the best philosopher ever and does not give out As AT ALL. You may think that you are writing a good paper but when you get it back, its always a bad grade. He grades grammar harshly and gives the paper back to you if you make more than 10 mistakes. Overall, don't take this teacher!!!
Yes, we all find out very quickly that he went to Yale, and if he doesn't tell you then you'll quickly figure it out from his arrogant pompous attitude. He does not teach and expects everyone to get the material as if they had been studying it for years like him. I'm sorry we can't all be as brilliant as you, Hugh Miller.
HE is a really cool guy...kind of reminds me of ned flanders form the simpsons...idk but hes a nice guy who really wants his students to understand. but the class is hardddddd!!! if phil isnt ur thing and ur tryin to fill core, DONT TAKE AESTHETICS!!!
Miller is amazing! He makes the subject interesting and comprehensible. He is a pretty harsh grader but he's reasonable. He has a wonderful personality and is very funny and understanding.
I took this class thinking it would be a psychology course. My mistake! If it had not have been for Dr. Miller, it would have been my least favorite class. While his class is very challenging, he grades on a VERY generous system. Despite being older, he is more up to date with current events than most others.
was not very understanding, graded as iff it were a 300 level class or as if you were looking to major in ethics. overall i disliked him very much
Dr. Miller is an excellent professor and truly cares about what he teaches. He also does an excellent job of explaining the texts -- I studied the same text under Dr. Miller and another professor and Dr. Miller's lectures are WORLDS better! Make sure your grammar is FLAWLESS in your papers and read the material and you'll get an A.
I could tell that Professor Miller was very interested in his subject, he was not very good at explaining it to the common person. He grades and acts like this is a 300 level course, though most of the people in it are freshmen. The texts are hard to understand and the class discussion and lecture doesn't help much. I dont recommend this class.
Great teacher. Philosophy is a tough subject but he not only knows what he's talking about, he's also super willing to help you out. Not the easiest class, okay, but if you want a passionate and approachable teacher, he's your guy.
Professor Miller is an incredibly intelligent man and it is obviously he knows a lot about Ethics, but he isn't very good at explaining in easy to understand terms. He is always at his office, but sometimes you leave more confused than you were before. Papers have to be FLAWLESS.
I thought any philosophy class would be very difficult but he makes things easy to understand because he explains everything so much. just make sure you take a lot of notes and you'll do good with the 3 papers and midterm and final. I would definitely recommend this class to others!
Yes, the papers have to be grammatically flawless and the subject matter is difficult to understand. But he is a very intelligent professor and knows what he's talking about. He willingly help you out and reads over your papers before they're due (and gives you feedback). He's a nice guy who tries to add some jokes here and there!
Great teacher. Makes class interesting and is a very funny man. grading scale is amazing, all you need is an 80 to get an A-. I recommend this class to anyone who likes a good laugh and a good understand of ethics
Professor Miller could quite possible be the most interesting man alive. He travels the world, speaks several languages, and REALLY knows his Ethics! However, he understands that most kids only take the class for core, so he tries to keep it simple, which is very helpful. He won't let you record lectures, and attendance is very important.
Professor Miller is seriously the smartest professor out there. He has a PHD in Theoretical Physics and philosophy. Don't be dumb; show up for class. If you "dun know how ta right paperz" then do not take this class. I loved this class!
Favorite teacher so far. Course can be hard, goes very in-depth into the books with lectures/slides. I haven't read any of the books, yet I understand all of them. 3 papers and a test, though if you go over the slides, you should be fine. Makes jokes frequently that some kids might not get, but if you understand them, they're hilarious.
I am surprised that he does not have all 5's!!!! This teacher is amazing! Dr. Miller is so funny and charming. I wish I could take his intro course all over again.
Professor Miller is definitely one of the most interesting professors at Loyola! If you pay attention and take notes on what he actually says you will understand any and all of the books without even reading them. Although, he has is an extremely difficult grader BUT an 80% in his class is an A. I definitely recommend him as a teacher!
Ethics is a very difficult subject, but Miller really tries to explain it in a way that his students will understand. He tries to make it entertaining for everyone. The material was difficult at times and I believe lecture attendance is mandatory to listen and take notes. There are 3 essays, a midterm, and a final. Both exams are open book.
He is an awesome and very interesting professor. He makes difficult concepts more relatable and is always at his office hours, and if not he tells you far in advance. His expectations are high and the readings are difficult but if you go to class and pay attention you should be fine, & his grading scale is SUPER lenient.
I've taken him multiple times. I'll put it to you this way; if you like Philosophy and you are a major, you will find his insights into various philosophers very helpful. If you don't care about philosophy, look somewhere with easier grading.
Awesome professor! Engages you in the material. He's very energetic and enthusiastic about the material in a good way. Class requires diligence. Reading before class is a must. He's a hard grader, but makes up for it with his expanded grading scale. And he let me make up an exam that I slept through no questions asked...enough said. Take him!
Very smart, and because of this very condescending. Terrible about responding to emails, gives off a decisive air of general apathy of the students. The course was challenging and interesting. His lectures were some of the best I've ever heard. If he just was slightly more caring about the students he would be a fantastic instructor.
He looks like Walter White. He's adorable and sensible. Lectures can get boring, but follow along and highlight passages he points out in his power points. Open book exams, but you NEED to text mark and know where things are. Very fair exams. Very fair grading system. Kind of tough on papers. I LOVED his class. Would definitely take again.
He's a highly intelligent person. He will digress if you bring anything political to his attention. It irked me that he was particularly fond of two young girls in the class as one of them was always in his office. Thankfully, the material was easy enough that I stopped attempting to go over material with him during office hours.
Really difficult grader. But he's also willing to help you if you go to his office hours. 10 pop quizzes two open book tests including final and two papers. He's interesting and a good lecture but he's difficult and he knows it.
Miller is a GREAT professor. I would retake his class in a heartbeat if I could. There was hardly a dull moment. He is eccentric and obviously loves philosophy. Still, making sure you know the readings thoroughly is a must. Take advantage of discussion to ask questions. Getting an A- is a bit hard but the class overall is well worth the work.
Hugh Miller is incredible. One of the most intelligent people I have ever met. I will take any class he teaches because of how interesting he makes it. All of his lectures make me think. Never had a boring day in his course.
Miller is a hard grader but a great teacher! Lectures are really thorough and informative. If you don't attend the lectures you really don't have a chance of passing. He's a really good public speaker.
Tough grader but his grade scale makes up for it. Three papers in total, but you have to be an exceptional writer and know what you are really talking about in order to get an A. He gives out a practice exam before the midterm and final, which is pretty much like the exam. Also make sure to read before the class because he gives out pop quizzes
Overall a very nice guy. Is a very humorous professor, which makes lectures relatively fun. Also provides a very nice grading scale which makes the class a lot easier than it should be. Definitely recommend him, however, you have to work for your grade.
Professor Miller is awesome! I had him for PHIL181 freshman year and I loved his class so much I ended up taking more philosophy classes & now I am a philosophy major. His lectures are always interesting & he is funny! Not an easy grader but a very fair grader and is always willing to help if you go to office hours.
Miller made Core Ethics as great as possible. Philosophy is tough to read, but Miller's lectures were thorough. He gives a lot of personal stories and makes himself very relatable to the class. He is more than willing to help you for each essay at his office hours. He also has a very relaxed grading system! Quizzes aren't hard if you use Sparknotes
He's an interesting professor, I'll give you that. His lectures go by fairly quickly. However, he has a tendency to input his political beliefs, which I find irritating in teachers. If you're willing to put in a lot of effort, you should get an A without any troubles. Three papers, two exams, pop quizzes. Drops the two lowest quizzes.
Not a big fan of Hugh. Lectures are long and just as confusing as the books we read. Pop quizzes can be difficult. Powerpoints aren't exactly helpful. Blew me off at office hours once and didn't respond to two of my emails. Doesn't allow laptops. Only good thing is the grading scale: 80-100 is an A, 60-79 a B, and so on.
Hugh Miller is an insanely intelligent guy and it really shows in his lectures. He was a great professor to take and one of the best I've had at Loyola, I found myself learning a lot. He gives some surprise reading quizzes every once and awhile but drops the lowest two grades. There were three papers and one in class exam not including the final.
He is so knowledgeable and well spoken in his lectures. His class his one of the tougher PHIL classes; however, you're guaranteed to learn a lot. It's not an easy A, but he is a fair grader. He gives bi-weekly pop quizzes but they aren't a problem if you read and go to lecture. 3 essays, 1 in-class essay, and a final. Don't have to read everything.
I struggled with Philosophy but Miller made it a lot easier to understand. Either take good notes during lecture and highlight passages in your books from the powerpoints or read. Books necessary for quizzes (sparknotes can help), and open book exam. He makes a lot of jokes (most are funny). Very strict about his rules though (no phones or laptops)
Pop quiz every week or so. Don't really have to listen, but he goes through slides fast. In general, a good teacher.
Dr. Miller is a great guy. Class was entertaining and the material was manageable. Pop quizzes every week or so on the reading. Gives good feedback on writing. His grading scale was wonderful. Expressed his own political views, but in a comedic and tasteful way. Overall, a wonderful guy and a solid choice.
His lectures are SO DRY I hated going to class. 10 pop quizzes (5 questions), 3 papers (3-5 pages), midterm & final. You can use the books on the midterm and final and the final is not cumulative. He is a super hard grader on the papers so his grading scale is low (80-100 is an A). Make sure your papers are very clear and "grammatically flawless".
Professor Miller is a great guy. He is very smart and clearly knows what he is talking about. Some of his lectures can get a bit long but he is usually entertaining. If you are looking to really learn about ethics, take him! His course may not be a walk in the park, but it is not that difficult. Read the books, show up for class, and you'll be fine
I would not reccomend him unless you have a deep passion for philosophy. He is unclear during his lectures and a harsh grader. He limits his office hours during the times when papers are due and never responds to emails. He is rude and condecsending towards students and doesnt post any grades on sakai. I would never take him again.
Do not take this guy. He is one of the worst professors ive ever taken at Loyola. He is rude to students, condescending, and acts like he is so much better than anyone he talks to. He never answers emails and never posted one grade on sakai. His quizzes and exams are so confusing they dont make sense even if you read the book. I dont reccommend him
Dr. Miller is a very knowledgeable man but expects his students to be the next Aristotles. He can be rude and is a harsh grader on papers which make up 60% of your grade. Do not be fooled by the grading scale. The weekly pop quizzes are hard and require you to spend a lot time reading philosophy every other night. Take a different phil181 for sure.
Professor Miller is very intelligent but disrespectful to his students. He also inserts his personal beliefs at unnecessary times. Expect a lecture heavy class with a lot of reading outside of it, as well as pop quizzes every week. The hard papers consist of comparing philosophers. Do not take this class if you do not want to become a philosopher.
How to get an A in this class 1 everythings on the powerpoints so just look at those 2 Go over quizzes (what you missed) 3 at least skim the readings (if not that, look up a quick wiki definition of the moral system you're on) 4 He likes a prose style of writing. (simple, short, clear.) 5. go to office hours (i never did but im sure they help
Hugh Miller is a very intelligent teacher, but do not expect an A. He has pop quizzes, even during discussion sections, so don't skip. He is a hard grader on papers and his pop quizzes are pretty impossible despite the amount of drops. He has a very inflated grading scale, but you still will not do well. Would not recommend unless you like ethics.
Im a STEM major & honestly the class was pretty easy. 2 papers, 1 midterm, 1 final, 10 pop quizzes(MC) &attendance for credit. To get an A on the papers go to his office hours, he literally tells you what to write (made the mistake of not going to office hours for paper 1). Pop quizzes: read the assigned pages. Exams are open book. highly recommend
He goes over the material during lectures and asks for questions at the beginning of class. Pop quizzes are rough, I didn't do too great on any of them but if you do well on papers (which if you go to office hours he tells you the answer if you come prepared). It takes work to get an A but it's not hard. I loved his class & recommend it to everyone
He is so hilarious and brilliant, he makes a boring class interesting with his jokes and examples. But Lord, he is the toughest grader ever. Would not recommend if this is your first philosophy class. Although an 84 is an A, you really have to work hard for a good grade.
87% A, 84% A- If you like philosophy this is a great class. You read the major works of Kant, Aristotle, Mill, de Beauvoir, and Nietzche. Quizzes aren't difficult. If you put in effort to understand what you're reading they're easy. Write clear and concise papers with solid logic and it's an easy A. You can do it! Don't fear philosophy.
nice guy and okay teacher, very lecture heavy and often goes on random tangents and personal stories that have nothing to do with the actual lectures, gives 12 quizzes throughout the semester but you don't know what day he gives it and drops the the lowest two grades, 3 papers a midterm and a final, material is difficult to understand
A nice guy but his lectures are extremely dry and most of what he says has nothing to do with what we need to know. I learned and understood more in a 10 minute crash course Youtube video than a month worth of lectures in this class.... I went into this class very excited to learn about ethics but I'm convinced its impossible to get an A.
This is an amazing prof. He is so smart and so funny, and really cares about his students. You have to work very hard and ready carefully, but it pays off and you feel like you learned something. he does pop quizzes but they are easy if you do the reading carefully. he is inspirational!
Miller's cool. His lectures make everything make sense so you MUST go to class! There isn't a lot of student engagement, mostly just him talking, but he's fun to listen to and is pretty entertaining. He gives out 12 reading quizzes throughout the semester, so go to class! He also gives out non-cumulative midterm and final and 3 5-page papers.
BOOORING. Very concerned with himself and not his students. Intelligent guy he just goes off on these long tangents and we don't really care. I wanted to learn about ethics not about how he feels when he hears a chinese woman sing opera in australia. (Yes that happened.)
Grading didn't always make sense, and the essays were very time consuming compared to the homework I received in all other core classes. Sometimes it felt like we were less a class of students than a captive audience for his comedy routine. I like when profs can joke around and tell you about themselves, but I learned more about him than ethics.
This class is not the worst, but not the best either. He is the hardest grader I've yet to encounter for a core philosophy class, it's kind of ridiculous.
Fabulous! A bit intimidating at first, but has the sense of humor/energy/'joie de vivre' as Robin Williams/the intelligence/passion for teaching of Neil deGrasse Tyson. 3 papers total. 12 (5 question) quizzes on readings that are given randomly throughout the semester (drops the lowest 2.) If u participate/read/skim/make an effort u will be fine!
