Sleep mode
He explains things thoroughly in lecture though not quite approachable in person
Very Monotonous. Watches X-files too much. Avg 11ppl sleeping/lecture.

EXAM WAS SUPER HARD.....everyone did poorly
Neary with monotone voice: marginal cost equals..... Everyone: snore
useless and helpness
sooo boring and monotone (kinda mean too)

I never understand what he is talking about in the class
so boring. slept through every class. midterm easy, final a ****.
His midterm was easy, but the final wasn't!!!! >__<
He's easy if you know how to do the math behind the economics concepts
monotonous, boring, midterm was a piece of cake but the final was a killer
His lecturer slides are wordy and useless, and his lectures ard boring as hell.
useless ****
Boring but gets the job done. All notes straight from text.

Useless, boring, and hard final
A very bad prof. Never makes eye contact with the class, stares off into space when he lectures. Very combative when asked questions. Maybe lecturing is not his strong suit, should try interrogating prisoners.
Want to fail....take him la....
very EASY mid term and final as long as u know how to do math
You get a cheat sheet for the final for God's sake. Easiest 80% ever.
I'll admit he stares at the back wall of the classroom when lecturing, but his lectures are superb - they make logical sense - everything is defined very well.
avoid this man if you can. no wonder his classes have around 30 empty seats. very hard exams, very boring, likes to fool you on tests. his only joy since he is rarely published
This is ridiculous. Neary is a very good professor. He doesn't waste time fooling around with students and their "fascinating" thoughts, but if someone has a question, he sure answers it. Does a good job teaching what he expects you to know.
Awesome Prof! He is very clear. he puts up notes on the website for the readings. He has review sessions. He comes on time. He explains each model very clearly with their assumptions and their conclusions so no one is ever lost. Thumbs up!!!
All these complaints about Neary's Classes are extremely unjust. He has been by far the most interesting prof I've ever had. He speaks clearly, and is extremely helpful outside of class. Those who want to actually learn something should take his class.
Not a bad lecturer. He assigns a whole sh*t load of readings but you can get away with being selective, because on the final, he lets you choose 3/7 questions and write an essay on each. So understand about 4/12 topics/models clearly and you can get an A.
maybe you 487 people should try taking 465.. his final was fair but his midterm was not.. he also likes to confuse the class AND himself during lectures.. maybe he's not as smart as he acts?!?! he also yelled at a guy on the first day of class
took both 465 and 487 taught by him. Easy to understand. Optional midterm was nice. Can be selective on his readings as you have choices on the exams. Course material itself was hard though.
Instead of teaching econ he should teach classes on how to put people to sleep...
He was incredibly boring, pointed at the overhead with his middle finger so it looked like he was giving the class the finger, and didn't teach anything that I didn't learn in high school.
bring a pillow......
The best econ prof I have ever had. His knowledge of the subject is flawless. His lectures are clear, concise and the material is interesting. He was able to answer every question on the spot. The readings are challenging but you are allowed to be selective and are very rewarding and interesting.
complete jerk. I am an exchange student and he made getting corses transfered so difficult. Very frustrating. His class was also so incredibly boring. He would teach something and i would be sonfused, then i would go home and read the textbook and got it straight away. Was absolutely no help.
Prof Neary rocks, best prof i've ever had. extremly inspirational, i now want to go to graduate school because of him.
Prof. Neary is so awesome. I really enjoyed his material and he was quite knowledgable. But it's best not to fall asleep in his class and remember to take good notes. You can at least choose to focus on certain topics for the midterm and final. This was probably the only econ course I have taken in which I have expressed interest. Easy to ace.
He is one of the best econ prof. in UBC. His lectures are clear and the material is interesting. But you better take good notes in class.
UBC should hire more prof like Neary, who actually knows his stuff and well understands the concept of "university education". read, read and read the papers and you will learn a lot.
Possibly the best teacher you will find in the Economics department. Presents very clear notes and doesn't shy away from showing you the foundations of a theory. His courses are heavy in readings, but the readings are extremely interesting much of the time!
Very engaging professor. He is able to make the lecture material very interesting. He explains all of the readings very well and makes difficult material easy to understand. If you attend all of his lectures and take detailed notes it should be easy to ace the class.
Usually I wait until the end of term to rate a prof. In this case, I feel I don't need to. Prof Neary is excellent. His classes are engaging, he makes hard theories easier to understand, provides a step by step method of teaching. One of my favourite profs at ubc. Readings are heavy, but managable. Def take him!
LOVE HIM! Knows his stuff, best prof I've had yet, one of the only ones I've really actually respected. Don't know why, too - but I find him strangely attractive.. I think it's because he's so mean to people who think their voices are worth listening to... he says what I'm thinking ("shut up,that's irrelevant") - take his class, you will LEARN!
Very good professor! Very clear and concise. His notes on the readings are the way to go if you want to ace the course. Hard to get to know though but definitely a good professor.
If you take his class, you are actually learning at an institution called University. His class is the best class that i've ever taken. He knows everything so well. He is resonable. I learned so much that could be useful in other circumstances. Two thumbs up!
I think he has taught this class over and over for years. The final is 100% of your grade if you don't sit for the midterm (70/30 otherwise). He is a very engaging lecturer; he makes you feel that he is speaking directly to you in a room of 120-plus. He has a passive attitude and he seems almost apathetic. He certainly won't baby you. I enjoyed his
worst ever
Good prof. Clear and definitely knows his stuff. A little scary at first, but he warms up about half way through the term. If you ask him a decent question, he will give you a decent answer. He's kinda quirky and funny, also. I quite liked him. However, some of the papers he assigned were impossible to understand if you don't have higher level math.
Professor Neary, is a wondeful professor, wanting nothing but success for his students. I have the privilidge of being in his class this term. His lectures are 1 hour only, but interesting. A very serious man but very nice and helpful. Sticks to the book. Great Teacher.
Dr. Neary's Econ Transition and Reform class was the best class ever. I do not think there is a class that I remember this clearly after 2 years and also relevant to my professional career. He is also a very good prof. as well. Highly recommended.
A very nice prof. Very knowledgeable, but expect to be responsible for class readings. He doesn't hand out A's on a silver platter but they're definitely earnable. If you don't prepare for class, you may find it a bit boring. However, for those who preview notes/text, you'll learn a lot!
Textbook is KEY in this class. His lectures are absolutely mindnumbingly boring but he's an incredibly fair prof, and it's not necessary to go to class. If you do your reading and practice your labs consistantly you have no reason to do badly in this class - exams are pulled directly from labs.
fair teacher. makes u feel u deserve ur grade. work hard, and u will be fine
Econ 387 is extremely interesting, and Neary engages you well. Your mark is based strictly on the midterm and final, so you don't waste time with projects that don't teach you anything. There is a lot to study, but it's all useful and interesting. Possibly my favorite class at UBC.
Prof. Neary is one of the most knowledgeable profs teaching at ubc. ALL of the reading was from online journal articles so the exact direction of the class was confusing at times. However, the midterm/final stressed the importance of the main concepts learned so the courses is managable given some diligence with the readings
Neary is a very knowledgeable professor and a great lecturer. I wouldn't say the lectures are absolutely mandatory; however, his notes and lectures definitely help you identify what the important concepts - which is a huge advantage given the amount of reading required for this class.
Amazing prof. DO NOT HESITATE to take a class with him. I took 466 Gov. Reg of Bus and it was a great and interesting course
a disappointment 102 after Gateman's 101... especially since i did so well with Gateman and this guy failed me. VERY boring, but he does know his stuff. Just boring. And he ruined my life.
Neary proceeds without an official plan, making it difficult for any students to plan ahead for their progress in the course. eg you don't know which chapters are in the course until he lectures on it, and you need to check once or twice a week to see if you have any quizzes due, then you have to learn that chapter, since there is no early warning
Very boring teacher, but knowledgeable. I hate his approach of macroeconomics, nearly STRICTLY algebra, which is terrible. His exams are basically mathematics exams, which I think are useless since we forget about those equations we studied 1 week later. He seems lazy and his phone keeps ringing during class (once every class). Not helpful
I don't know why people are complaining about this prof. HIS EXAMS ARE EASY! All from the online labs, so you know exactly what to expect. Don't the people below me feel lucky that they just have to do simple grade 9/10 level math rather than write essays like in Gateman's class??? Prof. Neary is very knowledgeable too.
This professor is the most pretentious and rude man I have ever met. As an Economics undergrad advisor he offers no advise or help towards planning your degree. His uninterest in students and lack of basic knowledge about courses, professors, or school policies which as an advisor, he should know, are deplorable. How he got hired as an advisor is a
prob the easiest test in university level since all his questions for midterms and finals are from the online practice questions. there is absolutely no need to attend class since i only went once during the term and managed to get 94%. good prof if you want marks bad if you actually want to learn econ
Prof Neary is your first choice for econ 102! Exams questions are pulled straightly from the quizzes. What I like the most is that he talks about current events that are relevant to the stuff he's teaching, what a great teaching habit! If you want to learn something practical, choose Neary. He can really makes you think as an economist
i think he is a great prof..doesn't give off A very easily..but if you understand the material.everything should be easy...better than neary and gateman in my opinion..final and midterm is similar to lab.just that he re-word it to make sure you understand the material..
Very easy exams. Questions straight from online quizzes so definitely take him to boost your mark. Hes very knowledgeable but tends to be extremely boring. His lectures are really more like tutorials/discussions so you don't really even have to attend class, but you'll have to learn everything from textbook pretty much. Fair prof.
Very honest about what you need to know. He does not try to trick you. I think attendance in class was really helpful, but hey, what do I know, I only got a 99% on one of the MTs. I would definitely take any course with Neary again.
he's a extremely fair prof..lecture is clear but boring...textbook is key for this class..myeconlab is also important in term of understanding the concept..if you understand the concept..this class will be a piece of cake ..midterms and final are easy and straight forward if you work hard and understand everything...strongly reccommended
Extremely boring professor. Knowledgeable but does not make concepts clear and expects students to be algebra geniuses. Should focus more on global understanding of economics rather than the strict mathematical side of it.
I definitely recommend this econ course! The direction of the course might be a little confusing in the beginning, but the trick is to read assigned reading material and you'll be fine. Besides, exams are choosing 2 out of 5 questions to answer (midterm), 4 out of 9 for final; exam questions are exactly alike on practice prob set! Easy to get A!
Really easy, don't need to attend lecture everything for midterm and final is from the assigned readings.
I love this guy! He's very intelligent and seems to know about EVERYTHING including politics and history! If you're interested in really learning, I highly recommend this class. A lot of material to cover but he's quite fair. Work hard and you'll surely do well!
This class was one of my favorite classes! You LEARN A LOT, and they are interesting to learn! Neary, who looks like santa clause, is very knowledgeable and passionate about economic reform. If you attend the class, although it's not mandatory, and READ the assigned material, you are good to go! I got an A from this class. I loved this class!
Great Professor if you are interested in economics. Pretty clear about what he expects - if you are not an econ major don't be afraid of the algebra - he allows you to explain in words on exam.
Clever guy. I like the fact that if you ask him a question he doesn't bs. He just clearly says I don't know. And tries to explain his own opinion. Please note he will take attendance at least 3 times during the term. He hates slackers and rude students. So if you are a studious student you'll do fine.
WOW i had him for econ 387 and i was quite satisfied with that course. however taking 301 with him was a big mistake. midterm was so incredibly hard i heard average was 50% ish? very mathematical. i dont think other sections were that math oriented in their tests. so yeah avoid him for econ 301
Get on his good side and you'll be fine, otherwise he is very unfriendly and helpful. I got into a car accident and lost valuable time and wanted some help, but he instead starts accusing me for asking him for free marks when I never asked for such a thing, only to make me feel even worse. Final exam was from the homework though so it wasn't bad.
Amazing Prof! Lots of reading, but classes are just a supplement for the readings so you can (but definitely shouldn't) miss class and pass. This was the most comprehensive and well taught upper level Econ course I've taken in 4 years at UBC. Exams aren't hard, but are essays. He gives sample questions though, and they're similar to the exams.
He does so much math in this class that it feels like a math class. 90% of what he teaches has to do with math and solving equations and minimal applications of theory. I don't really know what I learned in this class aside from how to manipulate a ton of equations... You get a cheat sheet on exams though. Homework is ok, midterm was hard (avg 55)
Rude, unfriendly and boring as hell. acts like a total jerk when you ask questions because of his unclear instructions. Very mathematics based approach to macro that nobody understands. Exams were easy though.
Exam is pretty easy. Based on homework questions he gives out but his lecture is quite dreadful. But it's worth taking if you like economics because he talks about economy in real life and posts related articles and stuff.
The midterm and exams are super easy. They are exact replicas of the online question sets so make sure you get those done. Lectures may appear as boring but he uses very relevant examples. He seems very rude and unapproachable but he is very helpful and friendly when you talk to him one on one.
- 3 Books. Read Them. Understand them. Don't say I didn't warn you - Very knowledgeable prof, but irritable; don't get on his bad side - While I rated the lectures non-mandatory, I went anyways. I would recommend going if you are unsure on a concept - You can get a very high mark (90+), but you must take interest. READ + UNDERSTAND
If you want somebody who is approachable dont take his class. If you want somebody who holds office hr, dont take his class b/c he doesnt hold ANY. Doesnt reply to email... never told "no" so many times in my life..
- Eager to discuss relevant articles and media - Posts additional content online for our reading leisure - Mathematical model-based learning
Easy online quizzes, and exams are based completely off lecture slides and readings. Not the friendliest prof around, can be discouraging at times.
