He is a prof at UNR that's actually worth mommy and daddies hard earned cash. His expertise at UNR is unpresidented. There are only a few that might have the same skill is Dr. Shapiro and this is because he is one of the few that cares about his students. He also does not play any favorites when it comes to politics. In the classroom he is neutral.
Awesome instructor! Knows his subject very well. Moves around a lot when he lectures and talk fast. Really long exams. Grades fairly.

He's got the worst ADD ever... but that's what makes him so good! You can't possibly get bored in his class. Makes everything seem so exciting! Pretty much, best teacher i've had here.
Definately one of the more interesting history professors. . . and I've had quite a few. I would absolutely take another class with him.

This guy is friggin great! I love how he likes to show us movies in fast forward...and he gets so into the stories he tells that he will even throw himself on the ground during a fight part of a story. He keeps everyone interest. One of the coolest techers I have had.
Somehow turned a seminar class into a forum to criticize grammar. Very quirky, bright guy. I had absolutely no idea what my grade was all semester. Still, classes were interesting and the readings were mostly good. We killed a few trees with all the copies we had to make.
AMAZING this professor will teach you the world and then some. He will also take an intrest in what you have to say. If Hugh Shapiro is teaching a class take it because it will be worth the effort. Not an easy class by any means but totally worth all the work will be willing to work with you and hear what you have to say. best class ever
great, great professor. Take him, you won't regret it.
My favorite professor I've had at the university yet. Going to class is necessary to do well on the tests/quizzes, but it's worth it because he is really fun to listen to and keeps the material interesting. Take him, take him, take him if you get the chance!
Best prof @ UNR! UNR is lucky to have prestigious prof of his caliber here. His knowledge of Asia and what he presents is absolutely spot-on after visiting Asia myself. Not your usual lecture class. Very engaging teaching style. Approachable & helpful. Amazing teaching style! Quizzes weekly, not hard if you read the material and go to lecture. :-D
He almost reminds me of a hyena on speed but that is wholly due to his charisma and passion towards what he does. I have never witnessed any sort of malice towards a student whatsoever. All I have seen is the overwhelming desire to teach what he knows and help any individual with any obstacle that they may encounter along the course of his class.
really energetic
I have never had a professor so passionate about what he teaches, and with so much energy! This man really knows his stuff and is more than eager to explain every little detail of it with a humorous story that helps you remember it. Also, the assigned reading is very interesting and most is actually not a chore to read.
I took his class years ago, and am now in graduate school as a China Scholar. I still get together with old classmates and joke about the footbinding lecture... He is hands down the best teacher of China and Chinese history that I have EVER met and learned from and by now thanks to him I have met A LOT... You HAVE to take this man's class...
Absolutely excellent! Dr. Shapiro is the best professor I have ever had.
Shapiro's amazing! This guy is brilliant, I can't wait for his classes just to be able to learn from him. IF you can take him, do it!
Shaprio is so much fun!! he's funny and helpful and funny. He'll answer any question at any time, you'll never feel stupid in his presence. He's amazing. Take him!
Still one of the best professors around. His passion for and knowledge of his subjects is mind-blowing. Take his classes!
good professor. knowledgeable. definitely has ADD though.
he is amazing! very enthusiastic and very passionate about history. learn a lot of interesting things and study the quizzes and read everythin that's assigned-you will do good on his exams if you just review your notes and quizzes.
very excited about the subject. Need to pay attention to what he says because it's half the quiz. His notes on the board are all over the place, i never paid attention to them, just what he says
Excellent teaching style, more like a storytelling than a lecture
Take him!
He is an EXCEPTIONAL professor. I highly recommend him if you are interested in history. He is one of the most passionate teachers I have ever met. His class was tedious, but you'll love almost every lecture. He gets so in depth and he is happy to be teaching it. And if you're not doing well in the class, it DOES bother him. He'll help you learn it
One of the best teachers at UNR. Even if you are not interested in Asian history this would be an interesting class. Great TA's and overall great course.
Best Professor in the country- easy.
Great professor! He helps you out with any problems, is enthusiastic about what he teaches, and every class is interesting! One of THE best professor I have ever had!
Amazing
He gets you absorbed into the material. After you leave his class, a couple of semesters later, you can still remember what the Taiping Rebellion and everything taught in the class. The material is not easy, but he makes so interesting it doesn't matter.
This was an amazing class. His enthusiasm for the topic created a great atmosphere for learning. I wish I was able to take all his courses. I would highly recommend his courses to anyone with an interset in China or East Asia.
Prof Shapiro is a superb teacher. Not only does he have the unique knack of generating interest in the subject but the ability to sustain the interest and to keep it alive. Hands down, he is the best teacher ever. UNR and the students are very lucky to have a teacher of his calibre.
Awesome professor! His best classes are his upper divisions. If you enjoyed his 200 level, it is worth taking a higher course. I found the 400 level class easier than the 200. You can not go to UNR and not take atleast one class by Dr. Shapiro.
Dr. Shapiro is one of the best teachers in the world. He is super nice, hilarious and absolutely brilliant. I had him for a 200-level class and a 400-level class and they were both awesome. His lectures are interesting and the assignments are pretty standard. Even if history isn't your subject area, take him as an elective. He is an amazing prof!
Shapiro is out-of-this-world. He is extremely helpful. The books we read are the best I have ever read, but you don't really need to read them. You are not tested on them, and he doesn't seem to mind. This class is seminar style. However, be prepared for a lot of people in the class and not enough time. WAY TOO MANY DAMN HUMANS IN THIS CLASS!!!
Dr. Shapiro is amazing. Seriously, I didn't really enjoy the subject matter at all, but despite that, this professor managed to make it interesting and actually taught me something. Very enthusiastic about what he teaches and it shows. He may very well be the best instructor I've ever had.
Shapiro's classes are really fun and interesting. He is an amazing teacher with a lot of passion about his subjects. He is entertaining enough to make a 3hour class not boring as hell. He does expect good, thoughtful work, but it is not extremely hard or time consuming.
He is an amazing teacher! I would take him anytime. He's hilarious and incredibily intelligent. Attendence isn't mandatory but to be honest, you miss out on the material and the jokes in class. He's really helpful and for the reading material, it's helpful but not really mandatory. He's amazing, take him!
Truly amazing teacher, incredibly intelligent, fun, excited and helpful. Reading is not mandatory, but will be extremely helpful with staying on track and further facilitate understanding of the subject. Highly advise it for success. There is a midterm, final, and research paper(only 4 pages). He had weekly quizzes, but stopped after midterm.
Awesome teacher! He is very intelligent, and he makes class fun. I really enjoyed his class and recommend him to everyone. Its not a walk in the park... lots of reading but you will learn a ton and he makes subjects that I usually am not interested in fun.
I am not a history major or history buff nor did I have any particular interest in China....but taking Chinese History with this professor was one of the best moves I've ever made. To this day (and I am now on my 2nd degree) it is one of the best classes I have ever taken. It is 100% because he is such a great teacher.
Really entertaining prof - cares about the students and the subject. Make sure you do the reading. Lots of extra credit opps. Hate history, but loved this class. Hist 211. A. Not too hard.
Loved this class and loved the teacher! Never met a teacher so passionate about his subject, even making students become just as interested as him. It was refreshing to hear him speak. Lecture is more like a story, not a lecture, so there is no way you are going to get bored. Definitely taking his other classes!
hes great, thats all there is to it. didnt have to take his class but needed a 15th credit, now im a history minor.
Shapiro was awesome. He made the lectures fun and he really enjoys teaching. He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I loved this class. Study the power points!!!!
Class is amazing, Charismatic, loves the subject, passion is overflowing, cares about his students, stories are funny and making going to lectures worth it, makes my week going to his class, not many tests, he is willing to discuss paper topics with give you his thoughts and how one might improve the paper.
Shapiro is the best professors I have ever had! He is so passionate about history, and truly wants to see his students learn. Even if you aren't into history, he can make you interested in it for this class! This is the best history class you will ever take. You have to go to ALL the lectures and pay attention, but if you do, it's an easy A!
I took Dr. Shapiro while achieving my undergrad in 2005 and 2006. This man is amazing and inspirational, he not only keeps his students engaged in a lecture style classroom he also is incredibly funny and makes you want to learn the subject material. What amazed me most is he remembers names of most of the students.
I dont normally get excited to attend class but when i do its for dr. shapiro's classes. i have taken two classes with him included 212, he not only changed my perspective on china but i feel more educated and knowledgeable about asia. its not hard to do well in his class. i normally try to find an excuse to skip class, but i always attend his
Professor Shapiro is a godsend. He is very clear on everything. The lectures go along with the reading, so it's a good idea to at least skim the reading before lectures, but definitely read before the test. There are only two tests in this course and the midterm was really easy. 10/10 would recommend.
I came for the diversity credit, I stayed for the amazing lectures. Very clear and explains the history of East Asia with an understanding matched by very few Western scholars, and done so in an amusing way. Besides, he's a Harvard scholar, and they're not exactly common (he's shy about it). Only criticism: could use less videos in class.
What a great professor! I took Hist 494A in the Fall semester of 2012, it was so good I kept coming back until I took everything that Dr. Shapiro taught. What a great course from a great professor! You will love his lectures and gain a lifelong affection for China! In our class he even had a group skype/chat session online with Shigehisa Kuriyama!
Hugh Shapiro is pure enthusiasm. He makes his lectures very fun and engaging, he does his best to answer questions, and he is insanely knowledgable and passionate about his subject. I had a great time in his class (it felt like story time). I didn't find his tests difficult; just study the power point slides closely and this class will be easy
Professor Shapiro is one most knowledgeable people you will ever meet. If you are able to take one of his course DO IT! The exam are easy if you attend class and do the readings. Professor Shapiro lectures are entertaining and give you a new prospective to history.
Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant! I have never enjoyed a course as much as this one. I did study rather hard for the exams because it was hard to know what exactly would be on it, but they usually end up being easy anyways. You definitely will not do well if you do not show up for his lectures. I had never enjoyed history, but now I do because of him.
I'm a senior Bio major, and I took Dr. Shapiro as one of my first college courses ever. To this day, he's the best professor I've ever had, across all fields. Informative, enthusiastic, passionate, the list goes on. Regardless of major, take this class for the experience of it.
Dr. Shapiro inspired me to go study abroad for a year in Japan. I doubt there is a more charismatic professor on UNR's campus. He is so incredibly caring and knowledgable. If you get a chance to take any class with him, do it! He changed how I think.
Hugh Shapiro will make Chinese history come alive, even to those who are not interested in the subject. His knowledge, supporting materials, and enthusiasm makes HIST 211 one of the best classes available at UNR.
An amazing follow up to his history 211 course, Hugh Shapiro's HIST 212 will give incredible insight into modern Chinese history. His knowledge, supporting materials, and enthusiasm makes HIST 212 one of the best classes available at UNR. I do recommend taking HIST 211 first, or if you had to choose between the two.
Dr. Shapiro's graduate seminar on pathologies and medicine in China is fascinating. It will make the student view the concepts of health and medicine in an entirely different way. It is a graduate level course, so it's a bit heavier on the reading and class attendance and participation in required.
Dr. Shapiro's lectures are entertaining and help with retaining the massive amounts of information given to you. Read and you'll do fine on the exams. The only problem I've had with him is the ambiguity when it comes to his papers and how he gets specific when grading. A clear rubric for what he wants from us shouldn't be hard.
He notices when students don't attend class and heavily applauds those who do attend class. This helps, especially for an evening class in the winter because walking to and from class in the dark is terrible but he makes it worth it. His lectures are really helpful and he tells you what will be on the test and offers a lot of life advice.
Shapiro is such a cool professor, and he knows so much about East Asia I'm actually convinced he's a spy for them. This guy knows too much and tells little tidbits of stories from his time spent there and about getting invited to high class events and whatnot. He's a fun lecturer and I would definitely take him again.
When I look back on my UNR experience, he's in the top 2 instructors who come to mind first - for good reasons. I freakin' loved this guy's classes. He's clearly passionate about Chinese history, medicine, and culture, and made it interesting for his students. My only regret is that I didn't take more of his classes when I had the chance.
When I look back on my UNR experience, he's in the top 2 instructors who come to mind first - for good reasons. I freakin' loved this guy's classes. That said, his classes are as challenging and their are interesting; don't expect an easy A if you don't show up and work. My one regret is that I didn't take more of his classes when I had the chance.
Dr. Shapiro is the angel of UNR. I have no interest in China, but I was urged to take his class by many of my peers. This man is not only a genius, he is also so kind, charismatic and interesting. I would recommend any of his classes to anyone with any interest in history. God bless you, Dr. Shapiro.
I went into this class thinking it was gonna be a chore, since I was taking this because of core curriculum and the like. Boy, I'm glad my mentality switched. Shapiro's a really fun professor. It's clear he's passionate about what he does, and that reflects in his lectures. I enjoyed each lecture, even if I'm not a history person. Bless this man.
Very easy class. Textbooks were never used but it is very lecture-heavy. Only graded assignments are weekly news article summaries, midterm, end-of-semester paper, and a final. Offers extra credit also, but not really needed. Attendance isn't graded, but you will do well if you go to class. I would 100% take his classes again without hesitation.
Shapiro is very genuine and cares about the successes of his students and their futures. Most professors care about their classes solely, but Shapiro truly cares about his students lives and how the material reaches them. His lectures sometimes got boring, but the final paper was a great assignment and the class readings were very interesting!!
Loved Mr. Shapiros class!
Dr. Shapiro is by far my favorite professor at UNR. I highly recommend taking his class, even if its just for an elective. His lectures never really felt long or mundane. He is very accommodating, easy to approach, and you can tell he genuinely cares about his students. I recommend attending each class, he shares valuable info for tests. Take notes
Genuinely one of the best history teachers I have ever had. Passionate about his favourite subjects, more than willing to answer questions, and his lectures are interesting! I would have this professor again, not a single question asked.
I would not recommend taking Professor Shapiro for HIST 212. He is very passionate which is a plus, he clearly enjoys the material. BUT he grades nothing for the entire semester and gives zero feedback for assignments that we turn in so we cant learn much from them. His lectures are boring and tests can on material that he mentions in tangents.
He's a pretty cool guy. He really enjoys teaching as well as what he is teaching. He isn't exactly the best with technology, but he's willing to work with his students on things like what should be included on the tests. His tests are reasonable, but he does include a lot of name memorization.
History is outside of my area of study and I wasn't sure if I would enjoy this course. However, due to Dr. Shapiro's wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm about the subject I thoroughly enjoyed this course. Aside from being a wonderful professor, it's clear he truly cares about his students and wants them to succeed. Definitely take his class.
I took Dr. Shapiro's class back in '16. I randomly remembered his discussion on sky burials and couldn't help but think of how much I retained in his course. Dr. Shapiro's class was outside my field of study and I have since graduated and become a professor myself. His class has stuck with me and I learned many fascinating things. Great professor.
There is no lecture/notes in this class as it is 100% student participation. Attendance is graded in every class. A good amount of work, but I think that is expected: weekly mini-essay, chapter analysis, in-class participation on the previous two points, and a final paper. Shapiro is passionate and is willing to help and guide you if necessary.
Dr. Shapiro is my favorite professor of all time. I only wish that I had found his classes earlier in my education. I have never before had a professor who has such enthusiasm and wide breadth of knowledge on a wide range of subjects both related and unrelated to the course. He inspires interest and joy in the subjects he teaches. Thank you!
He is a great professor, who uses his own experiences and observations to teach the class about China. Furthermore, the teacher has connections to incredible people who have first hand experience regarding the topics in our class. However, nearing end of semester he tells us to start working on our final, but with out a guide line...
Shapiro's 211 was so engaging he awakened my passion for Chinese/Japanese history. He can be a bit of a spas at times, jumping from place to place topic to topic in a matter of seconds but he was so engaging it didn't matter. If I could take a class with him every semester, I would. If you're history adjacent at all you NEED to take his classes.
A three hour class but Shapiro is such a good teacher and discussions are so interactive it didn't matter. You're expected to read, write, and do research every week but at this level of history you should've already been doing that in other classes. Any class with Shapiro is worth it and you're missing out if you don't take him.
This class was actually 494B, but it is not listed. Shapiro; the best damned professor I have ever had. Get ready to learn a lot in the best possible environment!
