He is helpful. But his assignment is quite a lot if you want to have a good grade. The exams conclude not only the textbook and the knowledge taught in class(much more than textbook) but also students' group presentation. In addition, you'd better record the class. We don't have home work but need to do two presentations in this semester.
Super good Venezuelan Profesor.
Take him. He has 4 tests each worth the same amount and the last one is take home. Country report and presentations are also easy and make up 13 of your grade. Wording is a bit tricky on tests but if you pay attention and read the book you'll do fine.
amazing professor. no homeworks, take notes in class and pay attention. study notes for exams. Group projects and presentations are great grade boosters if done well. very nice latin American professor!
Tests are based on more the lectures than the book, so it pays to show up. Good guy, really tries to help and wants you to learn. No homework, two group projects. Exams were sometimes difficult but with some effort it's not hard to get an A.
Doesn't take attendance but if he doesnt remember your face he will definitely call you out on it. I found his tests hard even with attending but he is super helpful and one of the nicest teachers I have met at UM. No homework but definitely know your stuff for your presentations and he'll give you a good grade.
I showed up, took good notes and still didn't learn a single thing. This class with any other teacher would be a breeze but he makes the material way more complicated than it needs to be and doesn't go by the book. This class was a total headache and class average was about a 65 on every test. Spare yourself and take someone else if you can
The class is composed of 4 tests, 1 group powerpoint (that you don't have to create--he provides it for you, all you have to do is present it) and 1 group paper that can do in 30 minutes while procrastinating. No homework. The tests are hard though--attend class, take good notes. The final is open textbook and notes.
He makes the class very difficult. I never missed a class but I sadly learned nothing from this class besides his name.
I took Professor Faria for ECO 211 and now I have him for 212. He is the best, anyone who says otherwise probably didn't go to class. His tests are super easy (20 q, multiple choice) and are solely based on his lectures. Take good notes, don't buy the book. He really just wants you to learn and he likes to know his students by name. TAKE HIM!!!
The class has the opportunity to be easy, but he is very unclear. His tests are worded terribly, so it makes them hard. Only a few multiple choice tests and super easy projects.
This class works better if you've already taken him for another course, like macro. He needs to know who you are so he calls on you to participate. The class is 100% participation- no tests or assignments.
Fun class. Great, interesting lectures that's all based on one book. The class has no exams or assignments, just attendance and participation. He's a climate change denier though, that's frustrating.
ECO 499- Pov and Development (now 379) is a discussion based class where we read and discuss Why Nations Fail. Hugo is very accessible outside of class and tries to help students in any way he can. He also argues his views convincingly Do not take this class if you can't handle your economic views being challenged or don't like coming to class
must take at UM.. but you have to go to class and participate
Faria was a fantastic professor. The material covered was pretty tough but he always explained it well. We had three group take home exams and they were all very tough and conceptual. However, he allows you to make corrections to try and boost your grade. HIGHLY recommend taking calc III and maybe even linear algebra before taking this course.
Hugo is a good guy. He takes the time to try and learn the names of the students. He's a little weird and funky, but in a good way. Very clear conservative bias, but does a good job explaining his views. A little unclear and unorganized, but if you pay attention in class you'll be fine. DO NOT BUY THE BOOK.
Faria is very kind. He takes time to establish connections with his students and he is accessible if you need help. You must pay attention in class because the tests are based off his lectures and not so much the book. The tests are multiple choice and are not too hard. This was my first Econ class and I was able to do well.
Very nice guy. The class is easy if you just show up and pay attention. Tests come from lectures. Does not take attendance and gives plenty of extra credit quizzes. Grading scale is also very lenient (70s are a B)
Hugo is so so sweet, but I did not learn much. His tests were worded very different than the material that was taught, making the exams a lot more difficult than they should have been. He also has a tendency to ramble which makes it hard to pay attention. He gives a ton of extra credit opportunities and curves pretty much everything.
Possibly the easiest class I have ever had. Not only is Hugo a great guy, he's super lenient. We probably skipped half of all classes and studied a total of like 8 hours and still got B+'s. Just imagine how well you could do if you show up!
Lectures are all over the place and the tests are super confusing but he gives a ton of extra credit quizzes and his grading scale is super easy. Overall easy if you show up and pay attention. Dont need to get the book.
Great teacher, give a lot of extra credit quizzes and is a really great person. Accent wasn't really a problem to deal with. Grade is based on 5 tests, all 20 question multiple choice - even the final exam. Study a lot for these tests and you will literally have to do nothing else. Tests are based on stuff he says in class. Test can he hardish tho
he is very nice and caring and curves all of the tests, attendance isn't mandatory but it is important to show up because his tests are lecture heavy also he is funny and fun to listen to. he cares a lot about his students and if he notices you coming to class and not skipping a lot he will write down your name and raise your grade up a notch
Hugo is a great professor, this was my second semester taking his class and I don't regret it one bit. Attendance is optional but it's best if you go, he does his best to make sure everyone is successful in the class but of course you have to put in effort yourself. Final was a take-home quiz and optional for those with a 70 average or higher.
Faria is the best economics professor! I wish I could take him for more sections. Go to class and pay attention to his lectures and you will pass with an easy A. He is understanding and gives extra credit. AMAZINGG PROFESSOR
Dr. Faria is a teacher you cannot miss class for. If you go to class and pay attention in class you will most likely do well. He is an extremely fair grader and cares more about you learning the concepts than the grade it's self.
He is a really good professor. He cares about his students. You don't have to go to class since grades are based on the exams which are multiple-choice, 4 exams and he will only count the 2 highest grades. However, if you don't go to class you won't understand. He is always willing to help and explain things over and over again
He is funny and will try to learn everyone names. Also my man dropped 2 out of 4 tests for me and I didnt go to class. You also learn even though it is easy.
Faria is great! He will try to learn everyone's name, and if you sit in the front and participate he will be more lenient w you. He curves like 20% and he made 2/4 tests optional, including the final! I highly recommend recording his lectures because that's where he gets his test questions. Don't buy the books either it all comes from his lectures
Hugo is the best! Really cares about his students and is a great teacher. 3 tests make up the grade.
The course is based off of 3 tests all worth 33% of your grade. Attending the lectures help with tests so try not to skip but attendance is not mandatory.
Professor Faria is awesome!! Only put a little effort and get great score.
Easiest teacher at UM and its not even close. There's 3 tests for the whole year and you have a week to complete them. Classes are very boring and he's horrible at explaining things, but the only grades are the exams which are ridiculously easy. If you actually want to learn anything, I don't suggest Hugo. If you want an easy A, definitely.
Easy A class and he is really nice too
As simple as this, the only review you need to read (unless he changes it all up next semester bc there were cheating scandals and a snitch in my class) IF YOU WANT AN EASY A THEN TAKE THIS CLASS BUT IF YOU ACTUALLY WANT TO LEARN THEN TAKE A DIFF TEACHER.
Take his class. He wants you to learn and wont kill you on the tests. If you show up and care youre all set.
Very nice and friendly guy. Hes pretty hard to understand and his lectures are very boring. His tests are also stupidly hard but theyre usually take-home.
Hugo is simply a king. He is very understanding and really tries to help out his students. Available pretty much all the time for office hours (whenever you call or text him). Very fair in grading. His class was hard, but very interesting. You kind of have to pay attention all the time but because of his hilarious personality, it is easy
3.9??? WHAT? This guy deserves a freaking 10 out of 5. Easiest class ever. Take him if you want to get an easy A. I strongly recommend him, besides his easy class he is really accesible outside class, hes SO caring and make everyone laugh!! Has a strong accent but not hard to follow. TAKE HIM!!
I have never heard of a professor who was as loved by students as Hugo is. Every time I mention him to somebody they always have good things to say about him or his class. The class itself is fairly easy and if I had even put in the slightest bit more effort I couldve ended up with an A+. He is funny and always answers questions if you have any.
10/10 my favorite professor at the U. Will take him for any class he teaches. Cares about students and genuinely wants them to learn.
Professor Faria grades by three exams. Doesn't make you take a final, and he's a really nice guy. I would say that his way of teaching is kind of confusing, but its manageable if you pay attention and take notes.
Man's class is super long and sometimes hard to get through but you will get an A. Take this class to boost your GPA
This was ECO 379- a very easy class. All you need to do is participate. However this class was a right wing echo-chamber with zero room to actually participate if you have any dissenting opinion. He made some very outrageous political claims and was extremely biased
Very nice guy but exams are not based on what he goes over in class, so it is very difficult to prepare, and a high probability you can get a bad grade even if you know the material. Very nice but got a poor grade despite preparing well and studying. Would not recommend
Professor Faria is the most boring and monotone professor I have had a UM. Every time I went to this class I dreaded it because his accent is so thick I could barely understand him and thus the whole hour and 20 minutes of the class felt like I am watching grass grow.
So the tests are worth a lot and do not relate to slides or anything else really. They are take home but very debatable and on stuff you would go over on random days. No one comes to class. Very very boring lectures. If you go and ask a few questions you will get a boost. Super nice guy tho and he will help you if you need it.
Professor Faria is a nice guy, but the class is graded by 3 exams that consist of 20 vague questions since he lets you take the test home. Online resources will not help you and in-class lectures are incredibly boring. Take a different professor if you want to do well and learn anything at all.
Don't take this class if you want to learn. Attendance is not mandatory and lectures are very long, slow and boring. He is a nice, older guy. Three exams make up your entire grade for the semester (no final). Exams are take home and MC, but hard and answers are debatable.
Unless you talk 15 to 20 times every SINGLE class you are not going to get an A. I do not recommend this class for people who do not like talking out loud in front of a class or participating in general.
I took Hugo because I had heard good things. Do not take this professor. The take home exams are incredibly hard and somewhat arbitrary. The questions are on material that was never covered. Before this class I had a 3.9 gpa (one A-). There is no reason for me, a straight A student, to have gotten a B- in an intro level class.
Hugo Faria is by far the most compassionate and caring professor. Sit in the front to ensure you can hear him and pay attention. Frequently makes funny jokes and admires those who participate. He is always available via text and appreciates those who do text him. Attendance isn't mandatory, but I have never missed because of how much I love him.
Hugo is the GOAT. Class is never mandatory, you're graded on three exams that you get a week to finish, if you take all three exams and do well on them you don't have to take the final. You cannot fail his class the lowest grade he'll give you is a C.
He doesn't like to be called professor, he likes to be called Hugo. His lectures are rather disorganized, but he is accessible by text. He only gives 3 tests, which are tricky but doable. Very funny & likes talking about politics. Recommended for easy A.
Hugos class was the easiest class I think I have ever taken! Very funny guy that engages with the class during his lectures. The only grades are 3 open note exams that you have a week to complete and can work with other classmates on, plus he doesn't require a final exam. Very laid back and offers to bump grades if you participate enough in class.
Hugo is a great professor who really wants his students to do well. The whole class is graded on 3 take home tests and the final is optional and only has to be taken if you want to replace one of your prior test grades. Attendance isn't mandatory. Hugo is a very nice and good professor who makes his class easy and simple.
Very easygoing class. Hugo knows people don't take his class seriously but he doesn't care. No one goes to class, theres 3 take home exams. do NOT chegg them, those answers are all wrong. just spend the 1-2 hours looking thru his notes and you'll find almost every answer. Easy A, but no one takes the class seriously.
The lectures are boring, but attendance is not mandatory. Your grade is based on 3 take-home exams that are really easy, and you are not required to take the final. Hugo's a nice guy and accessible outside of class, but he inserts a lot of his opinions into lectures and goes on tangents. Overall, the class is boring but easy. Take it for an easy A.
Hugo is a very funny professor! He is nice to students and loves when they participate. Participation will boost your grade in his class. The tests are not too difficult. There is a textbook for the class, but you can understand the material without using it. He also posts his lecture PowerPoints on his class page. He's quick with grading, too!
sweetest guy. attendance isn't mandatory, graded by only 3 take-home 25 multiple-choice tests. don't even have to pick up your test yourself, your friends can pick it up and drop it off for you. he gives extra credit and engages with people who go to class. take him he's the sweetest.
clueless
HES THE BEST!!!! He is so sweet and caring. He wants everyone to do well and will always help you.
Hugo is a god. He has the power to destroy you but shows mercy. He made this semester super tough, but in the end he saved us and everyone got 100 on the final. He's a great guy and I heard that he's even easier for micro.
Hugo is a great professor, super thoughtful. Class isn't too bad.
Professor Faria is definitely nice and knowledgeable but doesn't get his point across very well. Sometimes it's just hard to understand him. He also brings up politics very often and our third exam was basically a political science exam. Additionally the exams aren't take home anymore and the questions aren't the best.
Hugo has a very unique teaching style that takes a while to get used to but is very fun once you're with it. The class grade is entirely the 3 tests. The final test is optional, it is used to replace a previous test grade if you are not happy with it. He offers some extra credit. Sit in the front (no microphone) and take notes, you will do well.
It's hard to understand him, and his way of teaching is a bit messy. He is a kind guy if you get to meet him tho.
There is completely no structure to this class. I am so lost and I go to every class. Tests are impossible to study for even with open notes. Nice teacher but can't teach.
Very kind Professor. Just like a father. Didn't learn much from his class. If you want free grade just take him. No work. Open book exams. Very easy.
Such a sweet old man but absolutely clueless. He never comes with a plan for class and always forgets everything. Class average for tests was failing but he put big curves. No matter how many notes you bring the tests are still over nothing in the slides or documents. He's nice but if you could take someone else do it
Professor Faria is a kind person but his class has no structure. No review days, or schedule for the tests. He canceled several classes, and his way of teaching is messy. Your final grade is based on 3 exams with very few questions. They are not online anymore, but they are open book, which doesn't help much though. I wouldn't take him again :(
Hugo is a nice dude, horrible terrible professor. His lectures have no structure, he literally canceled class one day and said learn the material and we'll review next class. Entire class is 3 tests, and even if you have all the notes (i printed every article and slideshow) you still will struggle on them. pick someone else if u really wanna learn
No structure, poor at explaining. Nice guy but Hugo needs to realize this puts a lot of stress on students.
Exams are no longer open book so beware. He's very sassy and snaps back at students for asking questions because he's horrible at explaining the material. I took AP Micro in high school but didn't take the exam and I'm confused about what hes saying, I can't imagine what it's like for the kids who didn't take it. I DO NOT RECCOMEND.
Best teacher. Grade is based on 3 test and a final. tests are so one of them was take home. Best teacher!
Nice guy, confusing exams and likes to trick you. He's very nice and knows alot about Economics, but it's hard to learn much in this class. Even the smartest kids complain on exams.
Hugo is a wholesome old man, but not really a very good teacher. Thankfully I took AP micro in high school, so I know the topic. But if you don't have previous experience, you won't learn much. The whole grade is composed of 4 exams including the final, and he will drop the lowest grade. Idk my grade yet, but I have a A+ so far.
Hugo is a great guy but you will not learn a thing in his class, every exam you pray he curves. Try and get on his good side and you should be fine. Exams are very hard so prepare or pray he makes it a take home.
Im in his Macro and his Micro vs Macro classes were very different, Recently he switched to in class test for only Macro. You cant even hear this guy or understand him. He has no office hours and is so hard to reach. if you want to learn and get a good grade dont take him.
DO NOT take prof hugo for any class. its true he's a great guy but at the end of the day, you need a teacher. this guy does not teach only mumbles through his lectures and you will not understand a word. our last exam was about articles about israeli politics, which had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with microeconomics. DID NOT LEARN A SINGLE THING.
Professor Hugo is very kind. His class begins difficult but if you stick through it's not difficult at all. I would take him if you're looking for an easy class. Sitting through lectures can be boring but overall worth it.
He's super kind, but very lecture heavy, you won't understand the tests but I promise it'll be okay. There are only 3 major tests
Overall, his macro class wasn't great. He was extremely confusing and could rarely remember what he had already taught us. The content wasn't that hard, but the exam questions were poorly worded and difficult. Some exams were short, others were very long. Take notes in class and try to pay attention; if you can make him like you, it should help.
Flesh-eating amoeba enter my brain every time this guy speaks. I'm wondering how he got this job big time!!!!!!!! So rude even though his class is easy, he made my life hell. Class average on the first exam was genuinely a 40%. Would rather be a citizen of Hiroshima in 1945 than take this class again.
Hugo is actually the nicest guy ever but not a great teacher. You will end with an A but probably will think you're going to fail after the first exam but he'll add a huge curve. It's all online or group quizzes and you never have to go to class. You won't learn anything but easy A.
You won't learn, but its the easiest A you'll ever get. He's an older, Latino man, so his accent is a bit tough to get used to. Only graded on the 3 exams and the final is optional. First test was difficult, but got a huge curved. The next one was take home, and the last he literally just gave us the answers to. He's a really nice guy.
Really nice guy. Didn't learn that much - a little disappointing. Think he gave everyone As.
