If you like the subject, you will do well. He has a powerpoint teaching style and the handouts and assignments are very educational. The only downside is that he says the most "Um's" ever in a minute. Other than that, he is a good teacher that knows his facts and dates. Tests and quizzes are easy if you study well and have a good memory.
Easy to learn, modern teaching methods that makes class pass by with ease. However he teaches his theories as fact. He clearly has not done his homework on world religions. He taught that Judaism and Christianity are not Monotheistic. Sometimes you'll leave class thinking he has no idea what he is talking about. At least class is fun.
Very good prof. He is very helpful and his lectures are good. If you study the material you should do well in his class. Exams are not like typical exams. You have to write one research paper, and a weekly one page reflection paper on a primary source that you read and respond to.
Good professor lots of reading . It's all worth it ,will help you pass class and make it easy for you to pass.
Hernandez really is a great professor. He requires you to read think and question the material rather than just know it. He is very helpful if you have any questions or issues and always around before and after class and by email. He is very knowledgeable on the subject of Latin American History and incorporates a variety of sources into the class
He was the best professor and helped me a lot to get an A on my final paper. I am currently applying for another one of his classes.
Ridiculous amount of "ums" said a minute. My classmate and i calculated 1500 ums a lecture. I found myself counting ums in his class rather than taking notes. No need to take notes at all everything is on readings and handouts.
He's a sweet man, but "uh" before every sentence unless you speak to him one-on-one. As far as his lectures though he does it a lot.
This class was extremely boring and had to force myself to go at times. Very interesting material, just not presented very clearly. He is kind of all over the place and doesn't really lay out what you are supposed to learn from the class. Never had a test, so I was never sure how I was doing. I pulled a B though, and I liked the guy - very nice!
Professor Hernandez is a great guy, but his class just wasn't for me - I had a hard time paying attention, as the lectures were boring, and honestly not that informative. Just participate a lot, it'll keep you awake, and it goes towards your grade. If I didn't need this class to transfer, I would have dropped it - simple enough.
He is really nice and tries to help you do well. While he does his best to get you interested it is just sort of dry much of the time. Just read the book and you will do well.
one of the best teachers ive ever had, very knowledgable and extremely friendly with NO finals just a unit test like once every 5 weeks, wish he could teach all my classes :(
Although I have no interest in western history, he managed to keep me thoroughly interested in the subject. Was challenging but fair.
Great Teacher one of the most accommodating teachers ive ever had a total of 8 quizes and then he drops 2 so a total of 6 quizes the whole semester , offers extra credit every week ! i would definitely take him again !
One of the best history teachers ive had explains everything very well in lectures. and his class is EASY there are 8 quizes and he dropps the lowest two there are also a few free response 1 page essays that are easy as well. Take him hes great!!
Pretty easy class, however this teacher stutters like crazy... You need to go to class and talk in lectures and do well on quizzes. Other than that super easy.
Great teacher! Stutters a bit during lecture but other than that very clear and knowledgable. Easy A if you study and do the work. Only gives short 10 question quizzes every two weeks (no midterm or final) and drops your two lowest scores. You write a few short responses to articles and two longer papers. Easy class, great teacher! TAKE THIS CLASS!
His knowledge is extensive! It was a fun and relaxing class and made me really enjoy history.
Fairly good teacher. Quizzes can be easy or hard but you must read the book. Small essays are easy but the 2 final essays are graded extremely hard with very little guideline. Just have him look over them for pointers and suggestions. Hes very passionate about history and makes students question many of its aspects.
Hugo is awesome, he challenges you but what do you expect in college? He's a good teacher & is really funny, I would recommend his class.
Great teacher and great guy! Willing to help and answer questions. Given quizes and one essay. May sound easy but you will use the textbooks a lot. Overall great experience in his class!
Hugo cares all students do well in class, he makes every lecture interesting. Anytime I e-mailed him with questions, he answered right away, even on weekends. The class is not difficult or easy, if you do the assignments, study for tests and work with him for the essay, you will do good. I highly recommend him if you want to enjoy class.
Fantastic teacher! Lectures are comprehensive and you most likely won't need to read much if you pay attention. Quizzes(2 lowest are dropped) and ACTERS(5 short essays)are pretty easy, but will cost you big time if you slack off on too many. Final essay is the hardest part, but he makes sure to personally help you get an A if you ask.
To be honest, he is a great guy. Hes nice and quite talkative. Although, he did not make it clear that we had to read a book for this class. It was mentioned as "optional" but then suddenly it was mandatory. I was very confused and i am not one to slack. Be careful taking this course if History is not your main interest. Its difficult to understand
5 short papers, and one fairly large project in place of the final (though this may not be what you have, we were guinea pigs for this). Overall, not too bad of a class. He has high expectations, and you can't slack on the papers assigned. If you apply yourself to an extent, you should at least be fine.
Good teacher. Lectures every class via powerpoints, although he says a lot more than is actually on the slide itself.5 quizzes,& 3 unit exams. There are writing assignments that are 2 be turned in over the course of the class. He is always happy 2 answer questions & starts off every class saying, " Before I begin,Any questions, comments or concerns?"
I almost left his class numerous times because of the amount of "uh's" and "um's"he said (at least 2,000 per lecture) & if you want good grades, you have to study like 100 terms per ten question quiz.(6 quizzes) Of course, no one has time for that so I got C's on all my quizzes. I highly recommend that you choose a different teacher for this class.
Love him. 10 quizzes, with study guides, so easy and so much extra credit. Quizzes are fill in the blank from the terms in the book, with a word bank. Tests are almost identical to quizzes but with a map section and essay section. All essays are very doable just leave no loose ends to any theory and provide examples. He's so friendly!TAKE
Mr. Hernandez is a PHENOMENAL history professor. I am not even over with the semester and I am already looking for him as my professor for the next class. His study guides DIRECTLY relate to quizzes, 2 lowest quiz grades are dropped and he is extremely understanding with "life" meaning talk to him if you can't make it to class. AMAZING!!!
Not a fan of this class, material was pretty hard to follow. When asking him a question he didn't always answer it.
I did not enjoy this class and felt that I did not learn anything from the lectures. Most of the material learned I learned from the book. His lectures are more about the big idea. I'm studying to become a teacher and this class is needed. definitely feel I will need to take this class again to learn what is essential for my major.
He understands that life happens and sometimes you just can't make it to class that day. 4 tests, 4 quizzes, 3 short papers, and he drops the lowest score for the quizzes and tests. I didn't enjoy history before his class, however, NOW... I still don't enjoy history.... but, at least I got a good grade and learned a few cool historical facts.
Super sweet guy, but doesn't give traditional lectures. If you don't read then you'll be kind of screwed for the tests. Go to class the day before a test though because he does have a pretty good review. He always seems kind of nervous during class so it's hard to pay attention.
Prof. Herandez is a good guy but his lectures are so unclear. He tends to repeat the same things and get lost in his own words. He assigned two essays. The prompts were so confusing. He assigned a 15 page portfolio. And that's it. That's all the work we ever did. This is nothing like a normal history class. Class was easy but I didn't learn.
he is great Professor but the lectures were pretty long and boring at times. Class was not very difficult 2 Essays, 1 portfolio and extra credit. Would recommend
As a visual student, I loved the class. The lectures are good and he brings a lot of positive energy to the class.
He does really long lectures, no test, can redu all assignments. Easy class
He is a nice guy, but i find it hard to capture the information he gives . His lectures are very dry and dull. If I had the chance to take this class over again, i mostly would not.
Prof. Hernandez assigns a lot of reading, though we read a lot in class. It helps because sometimes the texts are confusing. He's knowledgeable about history and passionate, but he gets distracted by student questions that are sometimes off topic. He calls everyone by name and likes if you participate in discussion.
Easy class but won't take him again. He show up an 1.5 hours late on the day of the final! He would forget to put in grades (always watch D2L) He was unclear and was very slow to respond to emails. Took 2 weeks for him to respond to one of mine. He is a nice guy and the class was good but I would prefer to be with a more responsible professor.
Not the World History class I was expecting--very boring & dull. I had to force myself to go to class. Very kind & would try to be helpful. Lectures & reading didn't make any sense--I didn't learn anything. Homework is reading & writing portfolios. Quizes are easy, provides a study guide. Final is an essay, but I would of rather taken an exam.
Hugo was really cool and I enjoyed his class, learned a good amount and he's a great guy and very undertsanding. Show up to class raise your hand show a want to be in the class and a want to learn and you'll pass. Didn't study for one quiz aced all of them. Class work and load is fairly easy study a bit and show up Easy A. Hugo is awesome
Good teacher really cares about student input, i would say he's one of the good teacher here at moorpark college. only thing bad about this professor is that lectures do get boring often. But he's a good role model when it comes to teaching ,love the study guides very straight forward on whats going to be on the test.
This professor should not be teaching. The class I took was a waste of time. I couldn't tell you what I learned. He never had an actual lesson plan, powerpoints did not make sense whatsoever. His tests were based off of nothing from the study guide or lesson. Save yourself and don't take his class you will be disappointed.
Prof. Hernandez assigns a lot of reading in his classes that focus different themes in world history such as networks, hierarchies, and cultural frames. He has us read some texts in class and we talk about what these sources tell us about the big picture issues and the lives of individuals. Write down what he writes on the board!
Prof. Hugo is passionate about Latin American history. I learned a lot by asking questions in class since he was interested in what I wanted to learn more than what was the lesson of the day. Some of the readings were really wierd and challenging, but he models how to approach them. If you participate, you can get an A.
Prof Hernandez is a really cool guy and very passionate. He goes off topic about subject irrelevant to history and the class kind of drags on sometimes. His tests are very easy and offers extra credit. I'm disappointed in the World History class because its more focused on a social pyramid applied to all cultures instead of focusing individually
Lectures are very scattered and dull. He makes me feel like a burden every time Id ask a question. Does not thoroughly explain his expectations. Its like typing essays blindly. Hes very full of himself and avoids answering the questions. no. Bueno.
Easy A if you pay attention and do the work. Prof. Hernandez gives lots of feedback. I redid a reading write up and got an A on that work. I also missed an exam and he let me make it up. He really worked with me to get the grade I wanted.
This professor knew what he was talking about, he made each class interesting, tests were strong in vocab, but not too bad in the end. he interacted with each and ever student, knew everyones name, would ask how they are doing in the morning before class would start. Participation was strong! I would defiantly take his class again!
MA History was an amazing experience. The readings were very manageable.
Like this professor a lot. Got to know my name by the second week. Does a mix of group work and lecture. Two essays and quizzes that come straight from the textbook readings.
Professor Hernandez's class prepared me for reading and writing in upper division history courses at UCLA. His approach to world history was different than any other history course I have taken, but it was a great experience overall. He's approachable and always ready to answer questions.
His lectures are super boring. He'll never gives you information, he expects students to know the material which was never taught. Hes a very tough grader even though his directions are unclear.
Hugo Hernandez has to be the worst professor ever, he has the tendency to scream out of nowhere. He likes to walk on the desk and say "Who's your daddy?" He letures on things he doesnt even test us on. The exams are hard! If you do not like being picked on and absolutely don't like/understand history, do not take his class.
He is awful. Horrible. He's a nice person yes, but he is an idiot teacher. Final and Midterm are both essays with prompts that are super hard to under stand. off topic always. One time in class he broke us into groups based on blood types (illegal) and then taught us about blood types as if they were horoscopes. IN A HIST M160 CLASS! relevant? no!
There is a lot of reading and writing assigned in the class. Hugo grades fairly and will give you credit for trying. Asking questions in class helps me, and he's always willling to answer them in different ways until I understand.
At first his class may seem difficult but as time goes on you'll see it isn't very demanding. Lots of extra credit, study guides very closely follow the exams and are posted online. Knew everyones name by the second week and cares a lot about his students. He's willing to work with you to get the grade you want so long as you care would take again.
Professor Hernandez is a fantastic teacher. He truly cares about his students and I have found that at Moorpark that really matters because some teachers could care less. I learned many valuable things about Mexican American history that I would have never known prior. This class is an easy A unless you give absolutely zero effort.
Hugo is such a great professor. His class is very lecture heavy but he makes it fun. By the second week he already knows everyones name and is super easy to talk to. If you do the work and don't procrastinate it's an easy A!!
Hugo is a very understanding professor. His homework is not difficult and will become easier as you get the hang of it over the time of the semester. Make sure you read/prepare before the lectures as most students don't. I think as long as you get your work done youll do fine.
While a hard professor he is caring and his classes are great. do not take this class however if you expect to get an easy A or a high school level education. take it if you truly love history and are ready to work hard to get a good grade. Be ready to read as you will need to find useful sources in order to get good grades
Hernandez overall was a good choice for my last history class. I was really worried halfway through the semester because I had missed class for a volunteer trip and It brought my grade down 7%! Participation is 20% of your grade and that can make a huge difference. He worked with me and I ended up with an A. Overall a cool guy. Participation sucks
SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY Prof Hernandez is 1 of those teachers who acts like he's somewhat new so he thinks he needs to be extra hard w/ grading and w/ the material he gives you. You cant use MLA format for the essays. only chicago style. During his online lectures it takes him 10 min to finish 1 sentence bc he takes forever to just spit it out.
I think this was his first experience with an online class, so it seemed a little confusing or unorganized at times but overall it's comprehensive. Quite a bit of reading to do but the assignments and quizzes are easy. Discussion and quiz due every week and about 2 or 3 short essays and reading worksheets throughout the semester.
Hernandez was definitely a character. He tried very hard to be funny and relate to the students, but did a pretty bad job at it. His lectures were incredibly boring. Very easy to pass if you simply review the study guide before tests. I never studied for more than 1 hour and passed. He offers rewrites/takes. Picked on students a lot. Dont bother.
Hernandez's class was a pretty awful experience. His lectures, textbook and primary source readings, and other assignments were disjointed and did not relate to each other. His lectures are dry, long, and un-insightful. Occasionally he will attempt to liven up the class with humor in which he does not excel. His class is simply not worth taking.
Professor Hernandez is awesome. 4-week online class that double dips as a history & global perspectives requirement (depending on university). The class mainly consists of discussions that are directly from the textbook/opinion based, quizzes, reflection worksheets from the reading, and 2 essays. Great option for a history class, super easy.
AMAZING! Super easy history class. Easiest A. He was very understanding and kind not a ton of hw. He actually has really fun and easy discussions. Easy quizzes. I highly recommend taking his online class!
Mr. Hernandez is an amazing professor and I highly recommend him! Not only is he super understanding and caring about his students, he makes you dive deep into the elements of different historical events that really make the subject interesting. If youre looking for a good history teacher I wouldnt even think twice about taking him! AMAZING!
He purposefully teaches false information for his World History class, especially when it comes to European history. The best way to describe his views of Europeans is that they were savages that were unimportant and still are. He also doesn't like it when you use the terms BC/AD. His class can be bearable when he doesn't bring up Europe or gender.
Took his class before and dropped Online is better because there are less of his long dry lectures
His Canvas lectures are awful! The one star rating refers only to his online lectures.
He grades so ridiculously hard on the RRP assignments and Exams. It's so much writing and it is graded incredibly strictly that it feels like a really hard or honors-level English class.
Very kind and helpful but makes you work for your grade. Lots of reading but makes quizzes an easy A
Lectures can be dry but the class is organized very clearly. The modules follow the same schedule each week and force you to read and learn. As long as you write the weekly discussion post, fill out the weekly worksheet and do the quizzes you will do very well. The quizzes give you two attempts in case you do poorly in the beginning.
Great teacher! never pressured the work on us even though there were some assignments that were tough but it was doable. recommend!!
Prof H. treats this course like a graduate level history course. Don't be fooled by the 150 course listing. Get ready to write, and write and write, and then be critiqued and asked for revisions which will then boost your grade 10-15 points. He is passionate about history, super knowledgeable but tough! If you love history then you may enjoy .
Professor Hernandez's class is quite a bit of work, but if you try your best and put the effort in you'll pass. He's really caring and if anything comes up he will be lenient with grades. He is definitely understanding and dealt with the transition to the pandemic really well. The class was so interesting and he's a great person!
Definitely get ready to read in this class. Lots and lots of reading. The professor himself was nice and an easy-going grader with the few papers that were due. The only reason I wouldn't take this again is because of how much work there is. I took this class for my gen-ed and it felt like 4 credits instead of 3.
Get ready to read a lot and to complete many discussions and reading analysis worksheets. If you put the proper work in, you will get a good grade. Hes very nice.
His entire class was centered around one textbook and it seems like the whole class is just a cash grab to buy this one book, because its very wordy and terribly structured. This guy assigns WAY too many discussions and useless worksheets that only get good grades posted if you copy and paste the words in the textbooks. This guy doesnt even teach
I took Mr. Hernandez's asynch class, which I really regret. The reading was so difficult to understand (it didn't provide details) and his posted lectures were impossible to listen to (imagine coughing, sneezing, random pauses), the work was relatively easy as long as you did extra research to understand the materials instead of the assigned work.
Hernandez is an amazing, caring professor. I took this class accelerated + asynchronous and it was a LOT of work, but very worth it. I didnt learn anything that I didnt already know from previous history classes, but it was a nice refresher and the discussions gave me new perspectives. If you put effort, you will be more than fine. Id recommend.
The lectures are really difficult to get through. You're not allowed to up the speed, and the videos are filled with coughing and random pauses. The plus is that he is lenient about due dates. Overall wasn't a terrible class but I wouldn't take it again willingly.
I would say the class I took has some drawbacks, but overall I believe the professor did a good job teaching an interesting topic in a fun way.
Based very much on the textbook--be prepared to read almost the entire thing--with a couple worksheets, quizzes, and a lot of discussion posts. Grading occasionally takes off a good percentage for small mistakes but in general very fair when you put in the work. He is very helpful and answers emails quickly. Reading was just a little much for me.
Professor Hernandez was very kind and generous when grading. If the score is less than max points, he will give feedback on how to improve the grade and a second chance for a different grade. He clearly explained each assignment and gave examples for each. Late work was accepted and not marked down. Plan ahead, the last week was packed.
The lecture videos are very helpful & are broken into manageable chunks (annoying sneezing/coughing tho). Lots of reading between textbook excerpts & historical documents. Weekly worksheet based on historical doc, weekly discussion (use evidence!), and relatively simple quizzes. Not consistent with communication (several unanswered questions).
The professor was very understanding and willing to help us understand the assignments. He is also open to answering any questions we have about the class. He teaches through lectures, which makes it easy to understand the assignments.
Even though this is an 8-week course, the material is the same as his 16-week course. You will be bombarded with assignments and quizzes every week, and you will not get any feedback on your assignments until the last week or two of the course. Be prepared to write some tough papers and create a detailed travel plan.
Despite the bad rating this professor has he was actually very helpful when it came to assignments and other questions you might have. Late work was accepted and not marked down and quizzes were based on the readings and not hard at all. I will say there is a lot of reading so be prepared.
grades our assignments w/o looking at them + gives no advice in order to do better. keep getting points marked off for no reason and all i get is a comment saying “great comprehension skills!” and that's all he says after he tanks my grade. proceeded to spam give everyone a 95% on each assignment, disregarding those who did the bonus point question
I legitimately don't think he looks at the majority of what he grades. Gave me 90% on all of my discussions, yet only gave a comment on how to improve on 1 of them. Plus, this is an 8 week course and it took him 4 weeks to grade the first assignment. Also, his lectures are extremely boring since he mostly just reads out of a textbook. 👎🏻
