He's a typical Spanish teacher/professor. Very friendly, but doesn't actually teach much. Homework is sometimes graded. If you took Spanish in high school, it may be a similar experience. Overall, kind of a "meh" class.
he does not show up to his office hours or appointments that you make with him. he comes off as if he is helpful, but really he's not. his grading system is also horrible- he is pretty biased and makes up grades based on how he feels. i know from experience. i don't recommend him.
this is the worst professor i've had here. he is SO boring and just wanders through the book picking out random pages to discuss during class. i'm not learning anything new. i'm actually forgetting spanish...
Hugo is the cutest teacher ever! He is very funny...If your looking to better your spanish, don't take him, if you want an easy A or B, take him. Tests are impossible but if you ask him questions he'll give you the answers. Assigns homework but always forgets it so you can do it in class when you go over it and just turn it in to get a good grade!!
I don't know what these other ratings are talking about. Hugo is an amazing guy, he wants to help you succed. They are right about HW and stuff... But as far as Tests go they are not that hard. If you remotely pay attention and study the tenses he wants you to know it's not hard at all. Take him for a good time in class!
I COMPLETELY DISAGREE WITH EVERY NEGATIVE COMMENT ABOUT HUGO! HE IS A WONDERFUL TEACHER AND HIS TESTS ARE NOT IMPOSSIBLE... THIS ISNT HIGH SCHOOL... ITS COLLEGE THEREFORE YOU CANT EXPECT HIM TO TELL YOU WORD FOR WORD WHAT TO STUDY OR TO EXPECT... BUT FOR YOUR INFORMATION IF YOU ASKED HIM (LIKE HE HIGHLY SUGGESTED) THEN HE WOULD TELL YOU ANYTHING YO
He's a really sweet guy, I just didn't get anything out of his class. I was taking his class to hopefully pursue a minor in Spanish but I didn't learn any Spanish. His lectures are on Spanish 2 high school level but you have to almost be fluent to understand his tests. Almost never collects homework and attendance isn't mandatory.
really nice guy willing to help you learn in spanish class. His class does get boring at times but he really cares about the students and does not let them get behind
hugo was a fun guy & would help you when you asked for help. was passionate about the language but never really spoke it in class. tests were ok but had to study mostly on your own & teach yourself b/c classes were a mess. went off topic alot & would talk about uraguay all the time. good guy, very personable & helpful when asked, not very clear tho
Hugo is the BEST teacher I have had at JMU. If you don't understand he makes it so easy if you ask him. He is so funny and nice and adorable i LOVE him. If you just have to take Spanish for your major def. take him he's awesome.
Easy class kind of have to teach yourself. However, he does help you during office hours. His test are okay. Takes 15mins to do roll then, do a worksheet or two in class then thats about it. Barely any h.w and if you dont do it it doesnt matter do it during class
hugo is one of my favorite profs ever. he made learning spanish fun and interesting. his tests are very easy. studied for about an hour or so before taking the exams and got a's on all of them. he's very approachable and i recommend going to his office hours and getting help when needed
Hugo is a great guy! He always wants the best for his students. Some homework assingments and chapter tests. As long as you remember the basics from highschool, you should do fine! The class is always amusing, def. take Hugo!
If you are getting an A, there is nothing to complain about. If you aren't getting an A,then you aren't doing something right, thus you shouldn't complain. He makes class easy but still teaches language skills through repetition and group exercises.Nicest man ever, fascinating, well-rounded guy who just wants to educate.Don't **** about this guy.
hugo's great because he just wants everyone to do well. will go over your tests with you and up your grade. great guy.
Hugo is my absolute favorite teacher I have had at JMU. He is the sweetest man ever and truly cares about each of his students. As long as you are willing to do work, he is willing to help you succeed.
Hugo is the best! He's so funny and so chill about everything that we do in the class. He makes it really easy to learn and I don't even mind waking up to go to his class early.
Hugo is awesome! By far the best teacher I've had at JMU, and he is so easy. You don't need to do the work/ study as long as you try he will give you a good grade. He is so nice and funny and is so fun to talk to. Take his class!
I love him! He is soooo nice and hilarious! Fun class and pretty easy. TAKE HIM
Hugo is the MAN! He's such a nice guy... works with you and wants to see you succeed! Tests are pretty easy, do the homework, and go to his office if you have problems (HE WILL HELP YOU!)Excellent Spanish teacher. Even if you hate Spanish, take him, and within about 2-3 weeks you'll probably change your mind. Recommended 210%.
best prof. ever. That is all that needs to be said
Hugo is awesome! Very laid back and funny! His tests are easy and barely gives out any quizzes. If you are serious about Spanish, I'm not sure if you would want to take him. He does his best to help you though! Take him!!!
BEST professor ever. might be the nicest man I've ever met. TAKE HIM! Tests are easy if you've ever taken spanish before.
Hugo is GREAT!! He is so nice and asks you about how you are before beginning class, so by the time you get started you have 20 mins left. He really makes the class as fun&interesting as possible. Love it, love him.
Hugo is the best. He will give you extra credit if you want it and is so funny. he shows videos, does one group project and gives a little homework every night. nothing too bad. if you want to be a spanish minor, do not take him. if you want a good grade while getting your Gen-Ed requirements done, this is the man to take. <3 him!
Hugo is the man. Look forward to seeing the guy. Great sense of humor. Class is relaxed. He is willing to help. I learned alot. HIghest recommendation possible
Hugo is THE best professor I have ever had. He's such a sweetie, is always smiling, makes TONS of jokes, is full of interesting stories, and really cares about the material and the student. If you're taking a Spanish class, regardless of if it's your major/minor TAKE HUGO! You will love him. We all did. FANTASTIC professor.
Hugo is amazing! This is my 2nd year having him. He doesn't give anything lower than a C. He is very funny, makes class exciting, jokes around, even took us out for ice-cream. He loves when you come see him during office hours. He says it shows you care, and he will help you out more with your grade. Take him :)
oh hugo... this man will always have a special place in my heart. He is so sweet & so kind, it's hard not to love him. Basically just do the stuff in the workbook & lots of in class group talking. 1 group presentation (not hard at all) & 1 five minute individual presentation. not sure if you'll actually learn much, but it's an easy A & stress free
Very sweet guy, fun class. Easy A if you know spanish. If not, he helps you with everything.
Ohh Hugo... He's really old lol. He's funny and gets off track alot. Tests are really easy compared to other spanish teachers. Take him if you're trying to get a requirement out of the way. If you need it for a major or minor, don't expect to learn alot. Haha
Hugo is cool dude. personally i didnt like his teaching approach. he has a hard time explaining how to use tenses and is very unclear while teaching. i never tried very hard in the class and would wing every test and i have a B-. you wont learn Spanish, but you will get a good grade
I thought Hugo was great. Super sweet and funny man. Kinda hard to follow as a teacher though, he just assumes if one person understands that we all do and that was an issue for me. If you ask for help though, he'll literally give you the answer
Hugo is by far one of the nicest people I've ever met. His teaching is not so good, if you know spanish then definitely take him, it's an easy A, however if you're new to the language definitely don't take him, you won't learn much, but he's so nice and sweet, he's also willing to negotiate retaking grades. Take him for an easy A!
Hugo's class was very easy, and I enjoyed it a lot. The tests were easy, especially if you study the vocab, and he was very helpful when illness came up and you had to miss class. I loved learning from him, but if you are serious about learning the content, pick a different professor. He loves to tell stories, and some days we don't do anything.
HUGO IS THE BEST. funniest guy i know. so much fun and really nice. Really easy.
Hugo is a very genuine and caring professor. He is always there for his students and really tries to teach you more about life than Spanish. With that being said, some classes you won't really do anything so if you're all about Spanish he may not be your guy. He gives mock tests (not graded) the class before the tests to help out.
The easiest spanish class I have ever taken and ironically enough, the last level I needed. Hugo is very funny and sweet but you must have SUFFICIENT knowledge of spanish if you want to do well. The class is easy if you know you're stuff. He talks a lot about his life and encourages partner work frequently.
He is such a sweet man, he's like 65 and just got engaged last summer in Uruguay. He's not a grammar-hammer like most Spanish teachers and really just wants you to learn and comprehend the language and culture more than anything. He's so nice (so much so that its sad some people take advantage of him that way) but he is just an shhhwweeeeeeet guy.
Hugo is the sweetest man ever, I swear he would do anything for his students. He's actually somewhat of a pushover, so if you explain your situation, he's more than happy to help you. His tests are extremely easy, and he'll give you study guides for them that you'll go over in class. He does take attendance however, but you will WANT to go.
Hugo is a really nice, sweet, funny guy. Be prepared for him being a couple minutes late each class. If you want to actually learn something, I suggest picking another professor. He's very unclear about the things he wants us to dolearn. It's like he just picks random parts of Spanish to go over for one day. His instructions are very unclear.
Hugo is a wonderful human being, and if you struggle in his class just tell him and he will change your grade and offer you help. Extremely easy class, and a gened professor who becomes like your second dad
Hugo is the sweetest man there is. He tries to make the class as enjoyable as possible and if you ask about his wife he will go on a tangent and tell you all about her. His quizzes, which are easy, are not similar to his tests. And you have to bring your computer/textbook to class on test days. If you don't take him, you will regret it. So worth it
As a person, Hugo is the best. really funny and cares about his students and his culture. I was lost a lot of time, but still really enjoyed the class. As long as you have the basics down you can pass the tests. Attendance is mandatory though which was the biggest struggle for me.
I loved Hugo as a person he's so sweet and hilarious, but as long as you know the fundamentals that all you need to know to pass this class. It's great for if you want to reach your requirement for your BA but in my opinion if you had Spanish as a major or minor don't take his class
I took this class first semester of my freshman year. I am not fluent at all and i was not looking forward to this class. he made me enjoy coming everyday. He really cares about his students and takes time to make sure everyone understands what is going on. He is very involved in his culture, very inspirational, and an overall great person
Such a sweet and happy guy. He takes the time to personally get to know each student. Attendance is mandatory and material might be difficult for some to grasp, but if you engage in the classroom, he will help you boost your grade up. Gives a lot of homework but it does help understand the material. Super friendly and easily approachable.
One of the nicest professors I have ever had. You can get by knowing the fundamentals. I would take the class if you are trying to fulfill the BA requirement but not if you are pursuing a major in Spanish. Remember that it is easy to slack of during the semester (chapter tests are not worth much) but stay focused for the final (30% of grade).
Such a nice dude. Would love to hang out with him. But I wouldn't take his class again. Like everyone says, he is super easy. But only in a sense. If you understand what he wants, he is a super easy grader but it was difficult to understand what he expected. Also he assigns TONS of mindless busy work. Don't take if you want to GET Spanish.
Moriera was my favorite professor and probably one of my all time favorite people. He was so funny and so so nice and always wanted the best for all his students. Always extended deadlines if you forgot to do any of the online assignments and was mostly concerned with his students learning and loving with spanish. 10/10 recommend. Very easy class.
Hugo is such a sweet man! He really wants you to understand the language and is willing to help. Sometimes he gets off topic & rambles in Spanish but it's comical. He assigns mostly online homework, so be aware of due dates. Tests for every chapter and there is somewhat a lot of conversation practice. Overall, enjoyed the class!
EASIEST CLASS IVE EVER TAKEN. I only went to class when there were tests, they were all on canvas, use your own computer so pretty easy if you know what I mean..
Hugo is the cutest man alive. He actually wants his students to do well, and does everything to help them. He also gives a huge extra credit assignment that if you do and get above a 75% percent on, you get a major grade boost (A- to an A or B to B+) this was definitely my favorite class this semester. Hugo makes Spanish fun. TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
really sweet but I had to teach myself a lot of the material
Hugo is SO funny and sweet. This class was a total breeze. You don't really learn that much. But if you're looking for an easy SPAN class to fill your BA, this is it. Little to no homework and all tests are on canvas. He is incredibly nice and if you're struggling he's always willing to help. A little hard to understand at times, but still great.
Hugo is one of the nicest teachers you'll ever have at JMU. He cares how you do in the class and wants to see you succeed. His tests are fairly easy, and most of class time is spent working on activities in groups. He is very funny and makes class very interesting
Hugo is really easy. Honestly show up and you essentially pass. However, that's the hard part. We don't really do anything in class, so it's REALLY easy to skip it, but attendance is mandatory by the department. Tests are incredibly easy, but they are worth a lot, so make sure you know what's up. If you're looking to get through SPAN 232, take Hugo
Hugo is the best Spanish professor I've ever had and one of the best I've had at JMU. Super easy, nice and funny. If you need 232 for a BA requirement and you don't take him you're making a huge mistake. Tests are easy and on canvas. I've never been good at Spanish but he made it very simple, interesting and unintimidating.
Hugo is super funny and very nice. The class is extremely easy i got a 95% in it and di not try hard at all. Attendance is not super mandatory. Very easy A but you will not learn a ton unless you teach it to yourself.
His class is an Easy A, all the HW is online with unlimited tries (if not he'll reset it for you). His tests are crazy easy and also online, the textbook is "required" but basically it's your preference, you can get by without it. Hugo is the cutest man ever, he even took our class to IHOP, take him!!
Hugo was the sweetest little old man and it isn't hard to get an A. There are online activities you have to do from the textbook but if you get a bad grade, you can go up to him about it and he'll reopen as many as you want. There was one group project but he just sat there and smiled (no notes or anything) and everyone got a 100!
Hugo is THE SWEETEST GUY EVER. 10/10 recommend, especially for BA's who have to take 231 and 232. He wants you to succeed and is the sweetest man.
Nicest man you will ever meet. Easy to do well in the class but not a lot of actual learning. I'm sitting on a 94 going into the final I know nada.
best teacher Ive ever had he is so nice and caring and interesting to listen to
Hugo is THE BEST!! All of the homework and assignments are online, and if you didn't do a good job he'll reset as many as you want! He easily gets off topic which makes for the best/funniest class conversations you'll ever have. He really really cares about his students, during the semester we had class at IHOP 3 times! He's the biggest sweetheart!
I loved Hugo! I wanted to adopt him as my Uruguayan grandpa. The class was based off of online Supersite work, and if you got bad grades on it or were late, you could redo it. Tests were easy too, and he made study guides for each one. He is so funny and loved to have fun in the class, we had class at IHOP. Hugo is the bomb
You honestly don't learn much at all in his classes. It's a great GPA booster, but don't take him if you are majoring/minoring in Spanish because you will be lost in your other Spanish classes. I was honestly on Pinterest 90% of the time in his class and still got Bs on all of the tests. Super adorable old man who will play cute dog videos in class
Hugo is so funny and a great person, and this is a great class for anyone who just wants to get their language credit over with and get an easy A. However, this class isn't so great for those who really want to learn the language and improve their Spanish. We didn't do very much in class at all and I'm worried I'll be really behind in Span300.
Best Spanish class Ive ever taken. There was a good amount of homework, but it was easy and you have unlimited tries on every assignment. Keep up with the quizzes and homework and youll be fine. Hugo is the sweetest man alive and was definitely a highlight of my first semester. Take his class!
Hugo was THE highlight of my first semester and a true gem at JMU! Very funny and always has a smile on his face. He teaches because he wants to, not because he has to. Very lenient grader and understanding that everyone may not be at the same level of proficiency. Keep up with the online work and participate in class, and it's an easy "A".
Honestly just come to class and do the work. It's so easy to get an A if you show up and take every test and take all the quizzes on canvas which have unlimited attempts.
Honestly, an amazing person. He makes learning fun and truly cares about everyone.
Hugo is a great professor for people who just need to complete their BA requirement and do not want to do a lot of hard work.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Hugo is so funny and truly cares about his students. As long as you show up and do the work, it's an easy A. If you're majoring/minoring in Spanish, this may not be the class for you b/c it's mostly just fun and games. Hugo is the best!
Hugo was a great teacher, but the class might've been harder if I didn't already have so much knowledge of Spanish.
Hugo is awesome. A great class overall, but it's very easy to just skate by and still do well (which I liked but some who will take higher up Spanish classes may not enjoy). A fair amount of homework but it's online and easy. Quizzes are on canvas with unlimited attempts. He is such a sweet guy and really wants you to enjoy learning.
Hugo is an amazing professor. He seriously cares about his students and is a really funny dude. He is always there to help students when they don't understand the material. Would take him again!
Literally such a gem and kind soul. He makes class extremely enjoyable and really cares about each and every one of his students. A very easy "A" and class itself.
He is my favorite professor. So sweet and funny. I loved going to this class, he makes it fun and enjoyable. He is not a hard grader and have no quizzes just online homework and online tests. The final is the online on not online.
I love him! He's so sweet and funny. He gives great life advice and he grades really easy. He's so understanding too! Absolutely recommend.
Literally the sweetest man!!!! Everytime I leave this class Im in a better mood. Super easy to get a good grade but he offers an extra credit opportunity at the end of the semester if you need it. If youre taking spanish just to fulfill a requirement I rlly recommend him.
TAKE THIS CLASS! Hugo is the best professor I have ever taken. He is the most caring and passionate professor I have ever had. I looked forward to every single class and he really tries to make sure he gets to know each of his students. I learned so much while having so much fun. You defiantly will not regret taking Hugo.
I LOVE HUGO. He is the nicest professor I have ever had, and he cares so much about his students. I passed without ever learning vocab, and every single class was an adventure. He always tries to make it fun but also educational, and really wants everyone to pass. Defiantly would recommend taking him!!
I would ignore all of the other ratings because he changed his class this semester. Everything used to be online so you could get easy A's, but not all of the tests are in class and actually pretty challenging. He is a sweetheart however, and will really work with you to get you an A if you show effort! I would def take him over the other professor
hugo was one of the best professors ever. he made spanish so much fun and really cared about his students. there is a decent amount of online homework, but class time is very easy. love this guy!
Hugo is the sweetest professor I've ever had. There a good amount of online homework but if you do well on them you should be fine in the class. There is a group project but it was really straightforward and a good grade booster. He also offers extra credit !
Made me not hate spanish! he basically tells you what's on the test. Class before tests he gives you a "practice test" essentially the same as the exam. With minimal effort you will get an A. He is the kindest man you will ever meet and such an easy grader. So understanding if you are not the best at Spanish. TAKE HIM!
Super easy class. Make sure to come to the class before exams, his "mock exams" are practically the same thing. Supersite is really the only work you get, and you have weeks to complete maybe 2 hours of work. Also he is very understanding and will always help you get a better grade if you at least try. Take him!
Hugo is amazing! We had online homework, 1 group project and 3 test. During class, you don't really have to pay attention. The online homework can be pretty long if left for the last minute but he gives you about 4 days to complete it. Pretty much gives everyone an A on the group project. As long as you show that you are trying, you will get an A.
To be honest, I don't really like this class at all, but I can't leave a bad rating because this man is a sweetheart. It's easier than any high school level language I have taken and its so easy to ace. Just show up and you will be fine. Also, he lets you take every test/quiz unlimited times.... so yeah.
i love hugo. my spanish class is the only class i really look forward to this semester! he's extremely kind and funny and very understanding when we make mistakes. he does not assign much homework, only studying or worksheets we go over in class. if you need a spanish requirement and dont want to be stressed over it, take hugo!! hes a great person
Where do I even start with Hugo! He's the absolute best! SO hilarious and you can tell that he really cares about his students. He starts each class by saying hi to each student and asking how they are. It's very attainable to get an A especially if you've taken Spanish before. If you have the choice, take Hugo! You won't regret it!
Hugo is the kindest professor I have ever had. He is a little all over the place, but he gets lectures across well and in a fun manner. There is a lot of homework on Supersite, which is just small assignments. The tests are easy. He is really the best, an easy grader and he is very giving to his students.
The best professor I have ever had at JMU. He loves his students and his job. I only wish I was able to take him in person but we had to move online because of the pandemic. Our whole class loved him so much
I wish we did not have to go online because I didn't realize the class was meeting on zoom until a month later so I just kinda ignored the class. He seemed like a great professor and really caring.
Sweet and kind teacher who loves to tell stories and funny jokes.
I LOVE THIS MAN!!! I've had HORRIBLE Spanish teachers all of high school but Hugo really cares about you and is always willing to help. The class is super easy, just keep up with the textbook work and quizzes.
Hugo was an amazing teacher! Normally I'm afraid to participate in Spanish class, but he made me feel comfortable enough to do so. He constantly encouraged my class and told us funny jokes/stories. Some homework that can take a while to do, but he gives you like 2 weeks ahead of time and they're not hard. He also helps you study for tests
Nicest professor ever. Very easy class and I totally recommend having him
He is the sweetest professor ever and really cares if you do well. I would 100% take him again
Hugo personally asks each student in his class how they are doing before each class starts. He is very caring and would help us during tests if we needed it. He lets you retake quizzes as many times as you need to. The only downfall is the Supersite (online textbook) work that he has us do. He'll have 5 hours of work for one chapter alone. cool tho
Hugo is an absolute gem! He really enjoys teaching Spanish and cares about his students. The classes require participation most days. Keep up with online textbook because that can be very time consuming. Overall its decently easy to get an A if you try on the tests.
He is one of the kindest men I have ever met, and I almost wish I could keep taking Spanish classes just to have him as a professor! You get multiple attempts on quizzes and homework, but the tests can be somewhat challenging. He also asks for participation in classes pretty often. His class is not hard and he really cares about his students!
TAKE HIM!!!! He is legit the best professor ever. I had to take Spanish for my B.A. requirement and he is the most understanding and caring professor I wish I could take him for 232. You have to participate a lot but I was so nervous at first and he makes it so easy to speak because not a lot of people in my class were amazing at Spanish
Take him. I wish I had more time in his class. A caring old dude who will do anything to help you pass.
Hugo is seriously the best! He is so sweet and makes class fun every time. Assignments are all online through VHL and sometimes there is a good bit of homework (3-4 hours) but he gives you a 2-3 weeks to do it and its unlimited attempts. Quizzes are sparse but also unlimited attempts and study guides for exams are accurate and make them easy.
Hes really nice and class is easy if youve taken Spanish before, but if you havent youll likely be confused. Class moves fast with little structure. He also assigns a TON of homework on VHL (which costs $200). He genuinely cares about students and is very open about office hours. If youve taken Spanish already, this class is a guaranteed A.
Hugo really cares about his students and that they do well in his class. All homework and quizzes have unlimited attempts and he provides study guides for every exam. There is a lot of online homework via VHL sometimes, but if you have any problems completing it in time, he's willing to work with you.
Used VHL for homework and exams, sometimes he would unknowingly give hours (5+) of homework. Can find help on Quizlet. He was a great prof, really funny. Super easy class. Participate and he'll like you even more. He is very caring and wants to see you pass. As long as you try, you'll be fine.
Prof. Moreira is a sweet old man who clearly cares for his students. His lectures can get pretty slow/boring. Class rigor was low, I took AP Spanish in high school and felt very prepared. If you do the online work on VHL (assigned), you will be fine. Definitely ask him if you need help, he is MORE than helpful and accessible.
BEST professor ever!!!!!! Easy elective class. Do VHSL assignments and you'll be fine. He wants you to do well in the class. My favorite professor so far at JMU.
Super nice prof!! His lectures can be a little boring sometimes but as long as you keep up with VHL assignments the class is very easy!
A sweet old man who enjoyed teaching and wanted all of his students to do well. He wasn't an amazing teacher, and occasionally it was hard to follow his lectures, but he made sure to help all of his students and went really easy on us.
Amazing person, all of the work is available an easy to do, cares about all of his students and loves to teach.
Hugo is hands down the kindest and most understanding professor I've had. He is very lenient with late work and does not penalize. If the class is struggling he will curve grades and make sure you succeed/pass. As long as you do the work and at least try, you are good to go.
I love Hugo, but I learned very little Spanish in this class. He tells a lot of stories. Attendance is mandatory, but you don't really learn anything in class. The assignments on VHL and the tests are really easy. If you are looking for an easy GenEd take this but if you actually want to learn Spanish then take someone else.
There is online work with the textbook that he won't remind you about, make sure you check! Hugo is so funny and sweet, he doesn't speak English very well so he may be a bit hard to understand. Tests are in class but you can easily work with other students. He is a great storyteller and funny in his own quirky way.
All of the work is online and Professor Hugo is not very tech savvy. As long as you keep up with the work this class will be very easy. Prof. Hugo is one of the nicest people you will meet on this campus.
Professor Moreira is great! He's pretty funny and kind. Attendance is graded, but he will be lenient if you're sick. It is easy to learn from him, especially if you go to all the classes.
This class will be an A if you talk with him and show effort in the class, but you will have to grind for 232. Super kind but not as organized.
Professor Hugo is a super easy professor. He is super caring for his students and always willing to give extensions if need be. His class isn't hard and he gives plenty of opportunities to bring up your grade. All quizzes you have many attempts and exams are straight forward. Lectures can be boring but 100% recommend him as a Spanish professor
Hugo is super kind and wants everyone to do well in his class. Though, you will not learn Spanish. He is unorganized and not tech savvy at all. His lectures are boring and confusing, so it is sometimes hard to find the motivation to go to class. He is a really nice person, but I just do not think his class helped me at all with Spanish.
This class is all based on the textbook. The textbook has assignments and quizzes. Participation matters as well, he grades that. Overall, completing the assignments on canvas and the online text will set you up fine.
Hugo is very nice and really cares about his students. All the homework is done in the textbook, there is a lot of it but it's pretty easy and he doesn't really care about the deadlines as long as you have it in by the end of the semester. Exams are online done in class. The exams aren't open note but he doesn't really care if u look up answers.
Professor Hugo is one of the best people you will meet at JMU. He is extremely caring and loves to teach his class. You will not learn much Spanish and all the work is online and in the textbook. You will definitely enjoy yourself in Hugo's class.
One of my fav professors!! He is super caring and is always willing to help. Has very little tests and they are online. Has some hw, but honestly it doesn't take long and he gives you a lot of time to complete it. You will end up participating in class at some point because he calls on everyone but the work we are doing in class is not difficult.
Hugo is a very sweet professor who is very understanding. Still struggles with English, but if you are willing to work with him he is willing to work with you. There is a lot of homework that says it will take a while, but if you apply yourself you will be alright.
Hugo is amazing! He was so helpful and liked to connect with his students. He also always came with positive vibes and made sure that the class was easy for everyone. Take him if your taking SPAN109.
Hugo is nice but his class is difficult. He is very unorganized and his lectures are hard to follow. Everyone in my class was always left confused. There is lots of homework that we didn't know he assigned until we checked VHL to see it's a week late with point deductions for each day it's not turned in. Learned nothing and was unprepared for exams
He was great. Listened to questions and helped a lot. There is A LOT of online work through the textbook, but it's accepted late with a penalty. Just hours upon hours, but the professor is great in class.
Hugo cares so much about his students. He almost always takes late work and the tests and quizzes are easy. The class moves at a very fast pace and you need to have a good base of Spanish to understand. My boy Hugo also has a thick accent and could be hard to understand sometimes but he's such a great guy and had an awesome time in his class.
One of the nicest and most caring professors I've ever had. He's always willing to help you, almost always accepted late work, very knowledgeable as well as very understanding and caring of his students. He always kept the class interesting and he was very funny. A LOT of homework in the online textbook but he is so worth taking. Awesome professor!
Hugo is a great, incredibly kind professor. The class is easy but you will still learn. There's a lot of work in the online textbook (which is expensive) but it's not too hard to stay on top of. His English isn't perfect and he does have an accent, but everything can be figured out. Apart from the $100 textbook, no complaints!
Hugo is my favorite professor ever! He is so kind and thoughtful! He also you to redo assignments and is always ready to help. If you want to learn he will be there, but if you don't put forward the effort he won't help. He is truly the best! Take him if you can!
Hugo was one of the best professors that the department has to offer. I will say that he does care for his students quite a bit, and it shows. Attendance is mandatory. However, if you come to class, I feel that you will take more out of it than skipping. There is weekly homework and a few exams. Other than that, great class and valuable lessons!
Hugo is a great, understanding professor. The class has a lot of textbook homework, but he's flexible on deadlines. To prepare, I found unstuck ai and ChatGPT really helpful. Overall, an engaging class with a caring instructor.
Don't be scared off by the homework. It's a foreign language, of course there's going to be a lot of homework. Professor Moreira is such a nice guy and will do just about anything to help a student. It generally takes a few minutes for class to get going, and he gives students a lot of handouts.
I'm not sure why so many students are saying they "didn't learn" anything while taking Professor Hugo. If you put forth the effort and treat this class as an academic opportunity rather than a grade, you will learn. I know I did. He is the sweetest professor at JMU and really cares for students (WHO PUT IN EFFORT). Attendance is mandatory.
One of my favorite professors! Hugo is VERY kind and easy to get along with. He showed everyone respect and made Spanish fun to learn. Even had a tiny field trip to a Mexican restaurant we had to order in Spanish and it was awesome!
I could tell Professor Moreira really cared about his students. He was very patient with us. I have had a hard time with Spanish in the past but I really felt comfortable in his class.
such a nice professor. you have to buy a 100$ book which is annoying but you do use them so it's not a waste. quizzes are take home. he is very helpful when it comes to first learning the language so its super chill.
What an icon! The only reason I didn't do well in this class was bc I didn't constantly keep up with the online assignments. I didn't understand what he was lecturing abt but he is SO HELPFUL if u ask. U won't regret taking him! Such a sweet guy. I-CON-IC. He also really does want you to learn and gets excited when YOU want to learn.
Hugo is one of the best professors that JMU has to offer. He cares about his students deeply! Attendance is a mandatory thing unless you have an issue (email him, he can accommodate), homework is a weekly thing that does take up a nice sized portion of your overall grade. Goes over material in detail, take him!
TAKE HUGO!!! Best teacher ever. Had Hugo for 109 and 231 and so sad he is not teaching 232. Attendance is a big part of your grade, but exams and classwork are relativey easy. Hugo is full of humor, and extremely caring. He understands students are stressed and acknowledges life outside of the classroom. Could not recommend him enough.
The class is poorly organized and regularly reuses handouts. This professor literally gave us a handout with a reference to the election of 2008. He's terrible with technology and his "study guides" do very little to actually prepare you for the exam because they contain nothing on the written portion of the exams.
Hugo is my best friend, and he makes me want to come to school. He is extremely helpful and never condescending. I wish I could take all of my Spanish classes with him. He truly cares about you which is hard to come by in a professor.
Best Spanish teacher I've ever had, wish I could take more classes with him. If you have the ability to take his class DO IT! Extremely understanding and helpful, he wants you to actually understand the material. For the writing he corrects you but grades based on how much you tried and improved. AMAZING!
Hugo was one of the sweetest and most caring professors I've ever had. He is genuinely happy to be there and cares about everyone's' success. You can tell that teaching is literally a passion project for him. If you need help, he is definitely there to support you. Attendance is important, but it is nice to be there anyway. Exams are always online!
Very sweet guy, but most of the real learning you do is over VHL.
Very nice older man, native in Latin American Spanish. Lectures are important, does most of the teaching through slideshows and examples. Likes to interact with class. Most homework is on the textbook and quizzes.
Amazing, kind, caring professor. Helped me out when I could not figure out the online textbook portal and homework. Tells the best stories and a great teacher!
I found his class quite enjoyable, and he appreciated our efforts. He made sure we were all comfortable and never stressed, since he thought it would affect our ability. There are assignments posted once a week, but are very doable. However, he doesn't post due dates for his quizzes, but he would gladly extend the submission if asked nicely.
