AMAZING PROF!! He comes to class every day with a smile on, and you cant help but catch it. Hes a funny guy and really excited to teach. He explains concepts extremely well. There we 2 assignments due a week but those help to understand material all semester long. Easy markers. Easy tests. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
HUGO RULES!!! Awesome prof, a true coach. I would take another course from him in a heartbeat!
He told us that comments in this site are biased, but I just want to point out that Hugo is the best teacher I've ever had in my life. He is passionate about what he does, has thorough knowledge of the subject and explains it very well. He really cares about his students is a fair grader and a compassonate man. Take a course with him at all costs!!
amazing prof, always smiling and always happy - he makes the class easy to come to - numerous assignments but they are very helpful in the long run. great prof, reccommended without a doubt
BEST PROF EVER! so funny to listen to and he is so clear
Hugo is the best prof I've ever had! I struggle with math and statistics but he made it very clear.I ended up doing very well. Always in a good mood, extremely funny, makes class enjoyable. TAKE THIS CLASS FROM HIM, HE IS THE BEST!!
Best prof ever. Easy class to begin with and he makes it easier.
BEST PROF EVER! Makes this class extrememly easy. He assigns a lot of assignments but they are very useful to understand the material and study. Always willing to help, will bend over backwards for you. Take a class with him, you won't regret it!
Hugo is an incredibly good prof! So easy to talk to, so helpful and considerate. Unlike many others, he really cares about his students, his smile is contagious and his classes are so fun and helpful, I like them very much and I'm sure many others too. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
I'm sorry, he's a great guy and very enthusiastic, but his error rate and lack of preparedness before class is atrocious. He has pending examples because he can't demonstrate and has problems with simple calculations. spends way to much time idling waiting for class participation. Take it from Fallat if you can.
Be VERY careful on his exams because the marks aren't distributed evenly. A question that requires a lot of work and calculation will be worth the same as another question that requires only a simple one-sentence answer. He wastes time in class that could be spent covering ALL the mateial. Sometimes assignments are on things not covered in class.
UNREAL PROF!! always smiling and full of enthusiasm, his lectures are easy to understand and he doesn't waste time on theoretical trash, straight to the point, extremely helpful outside of class with website and office hours. A lot of course work, but it is VERY helpful to learn. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Great prof, very enthusiastic about teaching. His notes are very thorough and he explains concepts outside of the course to help gain a better understanding. He also makes good use of UR courses. Highly recommend him for any math or stats courses.
This class seemed challenging at first but he really breaks it down. Pay attention after the midterm cuz the final is long and all material is covered. The guy never stops smiling and is so enthusiastic, he lives for math. I'm taking STATS with him now and its great. Definitely would recommend this professor for any math or stats class. HUGO FTW!
I would not recommend this guy. He writes everything on the board, no presentation. you waste time writing down instead of learning. He assigns too much homework so he can skip over the chapters and expects you to know everything. he does not prepare for class. .
good prof.
Most difficult class I have ever taken, including 4th year science classes.
Amazing prof. His lectures and explanations are really good and he really helps you to understand the concepts. His midterms and final were very easy.
Hugo is a dedicated instructor. He knows his stuff, and he is willing to go above and beyond to help you. This course was extremely hard, but with Hugo instructing it, it seemed easier. Take Hugo if you are taking this class, you won't regret it.
Best math professor I've ever worked with so far. His lecture is simply amazing, he doesn't only give lectures from the text book but also show us plenty of tricks and tips to solve the problems. MATH 217 isn't an easy course but he makes it looks so simple.
Honestly my favourite teacher I've ever had at the U of R! Really cares about his students and is very funny and positive
Hugo is a really nice guy but his lectures aren't the best. Spends outrageous amounts of time idling waiting for class participation when not needed and makes lots of errors. Also struggles with time management as we wrote 5 quizzes in the last 4 weeks. But to give credit, we wrote some quizzes in groups.
Math can be a pretty dry subject but Hugo keeps it interesting which is pretty rare to find. His high energy approach to lectures, availability and compassion for students and friendly nature makes him a fantastic teacher.
whoever said stat 160 was harder than 4th year "science" classes must have been a psych major, can't imagine what other discipline that's possible in. good prof
I've always hated math. My entire life I failed everything about math. I took this same class with liviu mare, and failed it. It was a huge shock and I needed this credit. So I took hugo's class. Seriously everyone. He is the BEST teacher Ive everhad!! He makes it so fun and he answers your questions respecfully and clearly. Please take his class!
Taking stats160 I was super nervous but Hugo made the class SUPER enjoyable! He is always in a great mood and it's clear he loves what he does!! If you are planning to take one of his classes I would recommend buying the textbook as all the assignments he gives out have at least one or two questions from the textbook.
Always smiling! This guy has an endearing attitude and in class he's always wildly enthusiastic about what he's teaching. Hugo goes the extra mile and the way he gives step-by-step explanations is really outstanding! Come to class with your full attention and you will do great! Would definetely take his class again!
Hugo is a wonderful professor! You can tell he is very passionate when teaching. He cares for his students and genuinely wants them to do well. His lecture notes are really clear, logical, and helpful. His assignments and midterms were pretty easy if you payed attention.
Hugo is absolutely an amazing person and teacher. He is very thorough and organized when it comes to teaching his lecture. Take his class if possible.
Amazing Prof! he doesn't stand for cheating and he cares about your success if you care about it yourself. his marking and expectations are clear and he's always smiling. Hugo's willing to explain things in different ways and encourages questions.
I hate math because it's so hard. But he makes knowledge to be easily understand. He's a nice person and a great lecturer! If you finish all homework he post, you will get a satisfactory grade.
He cares about his students a lot, hed do anything to make sure his students understand the topic and help them step by step, even calculator steps, if you fail the midterm.. hell help you make it up, but you have to work for it!
Excellent prof, honestly want to see everyone succeed and put effort and enthusiasm into his teaching. Stats 289 was kind of hard, but he is remarkable at explain. A great guy all around
Good instructor but with some drawbacks: cares 99% about lectures and 1% about everything else like quizzes, homework, etc. Refuses to discuss the quizzes, tests, HM during class even tho students want to. Material on assignments sometimes random. He exactly looks like Hector Salamanca from Breaking bad. Rating: 7/10
Hugo is a caring prof that is passionate about teaching math in a fun way. The work load of his course is heavy, but doable. There is a total of 5 assignments (hardest), 5 quizzes, 2 midterms, a final exam, and extra problems. The work load would be less stressful if Hugo was more organized/clear/efficient throughout the entirety of the semester.
Many of the comments about him are correct that he is a very caring teacher who does try and explain things to the best of his ability. But his rating is extremely to high. Idk what he was like in real time but online this has been the most stressful disorganized class I have ever taken. Much of the examples he shows don't prepare you for the work.
Hugo is great at explaining and extremely patient. He cares a lot about the students and will address concerns you have/ hear you out. He's always super happy too, makes it hard to dislike him. Assignments were the toughest part, they really make you think and take time. Only complaint I have is I wish he was more on top of organizing the class.
Hugo was an amazing prof, he made things easy to understand and was willing to answer any questions. The only thing I had trouble with was the assignments, which sometimes had some questions that weren't really discussed in class. Also, I felt like he could've given a bit more time to do the homeworks but other than that he's a great prof
Horrible prof. He makes the things hard. His examples in the class do not match the types of questions he asks in the midterms, assignments, quizzes and even the final. He gives you an extra pressure for the first year class. His examples in the class are just a small hint for the exams and the exams are time challenging. Avoid him guys,,,,,,
The assignments have almost nothing to do with anything he covers in the lecture. What he covers is basic material which makes sense; however his assignments require to have a masters in the topic as they appear to have little or nothing to do with what you covered in the lecture. AVOID
I have never seen a mathematics professor so poorly prepare a class for examinations. Hugo excels in teaching the most simple concepts at an incredibly slow rate leaving the most complex questions for the examinations. His effort to teach the class is oftentimes lazy. Terrible prof, but a nice guy. Math 217 is not a hard class! Hugo makes it hard.
His lectures were not boring at all and made the class enjoyable. Vector Calculus is hard but Hugo makes it a bit less stressful on his students. He goes slow in lectures so it is not hard to keep up. He is a very funny man and I would 100% take another math class with him
Hugo was one of the worst math professors I have ever had. The assignments on webwork had nothing to do with the lectures. The final was the same format as the assignments but also had nothing to do with the lectures. You would think you understand from the examples in class, but then youd get to the assignment and have no idea where to even start
His lectures and examples are useless. I hated this class. Barbaric coursework! Complete abomination. Indubitably wretched. 0/10 i do NOT recommend.
Attendance is NOT mandatory in this class. Weekly homework assignment & quizzes which are fairly standard with the course material. Save yourself time, do not attend the classes & study on your own. Midterms are worth 35% each, or you can take your top midterm mark & the final. Final is not mandatory if you prefer midterm marks.
Hugo is very caring prof and very good at his job. His classes are intense and you will work very hard to earn your grade, and learn a lot ! He will also be hard marker at times. However you can get through if you try. If you want a high mark you will really have to work for it. Dont skip classes. Assignments, Quiz and Problems every week are A LOT
Class is awful! He makes you feel stupid if you ask a question, and doesnt control the class at all. Everyone is unmuted and blurting out answers at the same time, and theres clearly people that dont need this class. They randomly yell out the end answer when were doing the first step and make it confusing.
Lousy prof, cannot teach!
He uses a computer program that inaccurately marks tests and assignments, instead of having lengthy written answers to complex math questions marked properly by actual human beings. His class is a nightmare!
Hugo uses examples for almost all of his lectures and is very open to any questions. Attendance is highly recommended as his lectures are super useful. Office hours are very very useful and he will gladly help with homework questions or explain things further if you take the time to visit his office hours.
Professor Ordonez is the best math instructor in UofR. Took 2 of his course and it was a great learning experience!
you have to work hard to keep up the pace with him. complete your notes daily practice questions preferred to get good marks overall, my experience was goooooood
Hugo was a great prof! He was very enthusiastic and explained topics well. He was readily available for help and wanted everyone to succeed. There were weekly assignments and quizzes which I found helpful for studying. As long as you attend class, do plenty of practice problems and ask questions, you should do really well in this course!
Excellent professor, of course, the assignments are a little bit tough but the exams will have similar questions as discussed in class and assignments. He cares a lot about the students and has office hours for any problem.
Made simple things complicated and unwilling to help.
Amazing Prof, very helpful and respectful. You will be fine if keep attending classes and working on homeworks. Tests were closed book, long but not hard. Recommended.
Midterms are nothing like the sample exams and the assignments we get. Half of the class is near failling the course. Doesnt post lectures or share notes even if you're sick. Avoid
Midterm is way more difficult than the other quizzes, and he doesn't really teach much, just leaves it up to the textbook. The textbook is good for the most part, but can get ridiculously confusing in the second half of the semester. And when you're struggling to understand a concept or something Hugo isn't really much help. Would recommend avoid
2 midterms, a final and 7 assignments (lowest dropped). Gives you the answers to assignments if you go to his office hours. Crazy hard midterms and final. Does not post the slides (only posts the slide headings and you fill in the rest in class so you NEED to show up). He kinda gave up teaching midway through the semester. Textbook is helpful.
Amazing prof! Explained concepts well, was very knowledgeable, and very approachable!
Ridiculously tough graded homework assignments and WebWork quizzes which are overly picky. Poor time management so had to teach yourself sometimes with lecture videos even though the class was in-person. Lectures were clear and tests were fair. Attendance and doing all practice questions is the key to success,
Confusing at times, relies on the text book, which isn't much help. Personally always struggled with math, so this class was not a walk in the park. Asking for help, helps, but mostly doesn't. Docks marks off for silly little things. He is sometimes as confusing as the book, but is very nice. Exams in this class are a struggle. Also no calculators.
Lots of optional practice questions so u could be sure u knew what u were doing for the quizzes assignments midterms and final, prof explained in class very well and notes aren't posted so go to class. Caring prof, had lots of convenient office hours and was eager to answer questions. The class takes effort but it is very possible to do well! :)
Hugo is AMAZING! he knows what he's talking about, has tons of office hours (both online and in-person), and is open to questions and feedback. midterms and quizzes were fair. lots of homework assignments though. overall, an incredible prof that wants you to succeed.
very very bad about thestudents, no notes, no problem solving, no explaination. and when we tried tohave a talk about his notes he said to us that "university didnt paid me enough to do that much for you". very bad, if you got him then just DROP instantly. you can waste your money some were else in some better place.
Please I am begging you, please do not take any math course with him. PLEASE.
Yeah, He's basically the devil. He smiles everyday in class because he knows your going to need a miracle to pass.
I don't recommend taking this course from him.
Knowledgeable about the subject and wants all students to succeed. Clearly outlined everything that was to be tested and taught the concepts in the course really well with very detailed examples of everything we did. Always available to help, a great professor.
He is a great prof all around. I would recommend taking him as he is a very hardworking and helpful prof. His notes and examples prepare you for the midterm + final well. He is also available to help you out if you need it.
Literally, any other professor will do. I also doubt these positive reviews are even real...
Happy guy and good professor. Disregard the comment about him not giving notes and not helping. He was literally available at 9pm for office hours. If you can study, you will do fine.
Hugo Rodriguez Ordonez is basically rating himself good at this point, Ipromise this man is from hell, he legit wants you to fail. I am begging you in God's name, avoid him please. biggest scam ever, he does not upload notes ffs.
If you are currently in any Math class with Hugo as your Professor, drop it. Man's basically rating himself good at this point because 75% of students he taught this course got a failing grade. No Notes, horrible lectures, smiles at you but wicked at heart. He legit wants to destroy you!!!
Kindly stop misleading people with the positive opinions, we all know so many people struggled and failed this class and the Professor made it unbearable for us.
Won't suggest anyone
By far, the worst professor I have ever seen! Not an ounce of care for any of his students. If you take his class, you have been warned!
I actually took his class 2016 or 2017. I basically go to his class to write note because I did not understand anything he teaches. I would advice you get a Tutor, watch youtube or a friend who understands the class well to assist you.
Very passionate and also a very nice human being. Idk what went on in 217 for his ratings. Most of the people in 111 who struggled didn't put in effort or didn't show up to class. Quizzes and first midterm very easy, second midterm a little tougher, and the final was pretty tough (but was written by multiple profs). If you work hard I recommend.
Always smiling, and always available for office hours. Also makes the class interesting, as well as keeping the tests manageable. Any questions will be answered, and he cares about his students even though he teaches 8 courses this semester. Great prof for Math 111, and you will learn all the material to be prepared for future courses.
do not take class with him.
happy guy, available basically 24/7 for help. Class is difficult and the Lab was terrible. Homework assignments were long and constant. professor cares about the class but your going to need to put the effort in.
Hugo is a very nice person with a lot of energy. But asides from the he assigns way to many assignments. From quiz's to homework assignments it seems like something is always due. Also Webwork is the worst program of all time, its an absolute pain to use. Also overall not a good teacher he doesn't teach he just does.
try to avoid.
His midterms were so difficult and he does not give half marks so if you get the start of the question wrong the whole question is wrong.
The exams are incredibly easy, he lets you bring in a cheat sheet (both the midterm AND final) and they are HEAVILY based on the practice exams he posts (seriously, DO THEM and you'll thank me). Beware however that this course uses proctortrak for some online quizzes and webwork. Textbook was free and he's pretty enthusiastic about statistics.
This guy is awful. He is the worst prof I have ever had. He had told us multiple times in class that if we did not understand the way he taught something that we could do a different way. I did this and he gave me 8/15 despite me getting the answer correct. I would never have him as a prof again and please DO NOT take this class. It is horrendous.
Best Stats prof by far. Has so many 'learner hours' in person and on zoom. Make sure to stay on top of homework assignments and quizzes (quizzes on proctor!). It is clear that he loves his job and will make the course very fun to learn. Do the practice exams and you will do so well.
does not teach, just does. he was enthusiastic but he's a really bad teacher. if you aren't a strong math student, try to avoid. however, his midterm and final were both a complete copy of the practice exams (seriously every single question in the exact order, not a single decimal out of place) and he allows a cheat sheet for both.
After our classes midterm and during the final unit he stopped responding to emails and didn't even teach us the last unit. The practice and examples given to us in lectures were nothing like the ones in quizzes and the ones in the midterm and final were completely different from the examples and quizzes.
Hugo was very thorough in his teaching and quizzes/midterm were fair. His quizzes are proctored but they are reasonable and he gives lots of time to complete them. He is very enthusiastic and returns grades in a week or less. I would take classes with Hugo again.
This prof is bad, he never really explains things in detail and just assumes you already know how to do it ,he basically didn't teach us the last chapter of the coarse. Towards the final he stopped responding to messages and when he did respond it would be a week later, he apologized and said he had 500 kids he was teaching. Take some else, I will.
Take a class with any other professor. Assignments took forever to get graded, blamed everything on TA's, lectures were impossible to follow along to. He just assumed we knew everything already in an into course.
Its very hard to pass his lectures
Hugo is very knowledgeable about statistics. His lectures were engaging, and it is evident that he puts a lot of work into class plans. Class was always timely. He had many learner hours throughout the week, which included before/after class, on zoom in evenings, or by appointment - all very helpful and appreciated.
You better know your stuff because he grades tough and the midterm and final was very difficult. Only good thing about him is that he is very nice
Hugo provides open office hours thrice a week on zoom and in person, provided clear instructions on reviewing materials and what will be given in midterms/finals. Webwork homework are a lot and time consuming, but the midterms follow exactly that. Answered every question whenever he can and was lenient in grading.
He was an amazing teacher! He writes on the board and always stops and make sure everyone is understanding the subject. He teaches you things in an easy way to understand. He is really great and quizzes and midterms were very straightforward.
Provided well-thought out lectures and clarified when needed. Midterms were very fair if you prepared. He also provided scans of the textbook and a thorough overview of topics that would be covered on exams. Super available and easy to reach. Clearly passionate about this topic. Attending lectures is definitely important. Would take him again!
