PROFESSOR RAYA IS AWESOME. HE MAKES MATH EASY TO UNDERSTAND. TAKE THIS PROFESSOR!!!
He helped plenty! Very clear on what is wanted, I definitely would recommend
Does he have any idea why he is here? You ask him a simple question to explain a problem he doesn't explain it to you and you can hardly hear him talk. Don't take this class
you can barely hear him and he isn't confident in his work
I just wish I could say I like him as a professor but he isn't the professor type. He is more like a friend who has no idea about math... not professional at all and not very clear when he speaks or teaches. I don't recommend him.
Prof Raya was great. We covered a lot of material very quickly but he always stopped to answer any questions along the way.
Sometimes I felt like i had to teach myself because he wasn't so clear and when you asked him a simple question it took him awhile to respond because he had to think for 2 minutes before answering a simple question.
I TOOK MATH 113 IN FALL2013. HE IS VERY NICE AND PATIENT. HE GIVES HOMEWORK AFTER EVERY LECTURE BUT ITS NOT MUCH LIKE OTHER PROFESSORS GIVE. TESTS ARE NOT THAT HARD YOU JUST HAVE TO GO OVER THE MATERIAL. TAKE HIM.
Good understanding proffesor and easy and clear.
He's more of a friend, you won't feel that you don't belong in the class because he knows everyone. but sometimes he is not sure about his answers but he is willing to be corrected.
I took Math 125 during Spring 2015 and he is such a great math teacher. He actually makes you want to learn the material he's teaching. Tests are 10-15 questions max. And he gives a study guide before the tests and you get into a group of 4 people and solve the questions. All is hw is on mymathlab! You can come in late or leave early but it's on u
Great guy he really is there for the students. No nonsense lectures, by that I mean no long boring theorem stating. Lectures consist of example after example and not easy ones like other professors seem to do. Test are somewhat similar to his study guides. Study guide consist of a quiz, homework, and his own personalized study guide with solutions.
His lectures are very clear and concise. Attendance is a must for this class. He takes the time to answer any questions and if you don't understand something he'll go over it. His exams are fairly easy. He gives a study guide that you do in groups of 4 and counts as extra credit. Very patient, caring, and helpful! Absolute BEST stats professor!
This professor is amazing. Math is not my strength and he managed to get me to understand it. His lectures are clear and he is always willing to go over the examples with the students. Also he assigns homework and ask daily if there were any questions on the homework. Groupwork is good as he goes around and helps each individual group. Take him!!!
Professor Mendoza is the best teacher in the whole wide world! i took his class for summer bridge to see if i am able to be placed in a higher level math course. Because of his patients and helpfulness i was able to go from math 110 to math 115 hes very knowledgeable and kind i would love to take another class with him.
Hands down BEST math professor ever. Whatever you see on the group work and homework is what you are going to see on the exams. Exams are straight forward and easy. Just do the homework and practice the group work and you'll get an A. OH and he drops the lowest two exams!
He really knows how to teach the subject in a way that other teachers don't. He makes it easier to learn and comprehend. We had group work everyday which helped a lot and then with the hw online, the class started to get easier. If you need help he will help you. One of my fav math teachers ever. Drops lowest test which includes the final.
Mendoza is a God amongst men when it comes to teaching. I took 259 (pre-calc and trig 6 units) in a 5 week winter class and it was the easiest math class I have ever taken. All of his lectures are crystal clear and he assigns group work during class so no one will go home without understanding that days topic. Totally worth waking up at 7 everyday.
He is the best im a person who hates math but when i took him he changed my mind hands down there will never be a math teacher as good as him i recommend him for everyone
He goes right to the board and starts lecturing, his examples don't compare to the online work often so it can be confusing; his way, tutor's way or online. Not available after class -jams out. Explains things using stat term so CONFUSING. Gives in class quizzes but doesn't let you know the correct answer to study from. Better be great at math/word
Really good lectures. If you complete all the assignments, you should be able to solve the quizzes, which is an exact replica of a tests. Very helpful If you need more explanations. Great teacher: patient and supportive.
Professor Mendoza is AMAZING! I hadn't taken math in forever and he is the best teacher I could hope for. He really cares about students' success and understanding of the subject. YOU MUST SHOW UP TO CLASS or you will be lost at the next lecture. Lots of homework, do it on time and you'll be fine. I would take a class with him again.
This was the second time, I've taken Math 227. I'm glad that I took Raya. Homework is on-line, quizzes were on-line too, but could repeat them, til you got a better grade. Homework and quizzes are half of the grade. So if your not a good test taker, then you still have a good chance to pass the class through homework and quizzes, Great lecture too
Amazing Professor. I took him Spring 2016 for Stats and his class is amazing. The math is tough but he does everything he can to help you pass his class and understand the material.
He is really great teacher. Unless you work hard you would not get good grade in this class so, better you show up to class everyday and review your group work before you go to take the test.
He is one of the best professor I have ever had in my life. Today if I have transferred to the university, I owe to him because I failed the math 227 two times and I passed this class with an A. He is a great teacher and I remember whatever he taught me after 3 years.
Professor Raya-Mendoza is the best math professor I have taken at LAVC. His class is a bit tough but their is no way you can fail his class. He does whatever he can to help students pass his class, thanks to him I got to transfer. His class is about online homework, quizzes and test. All pretty easy. Make sure you do great on the hw & you'll pass.
Professor Mendoza is one of the best math professors at LAVC. The group work and exams are parallel to each other. The tests are straightforward and it directly comes from the lecture material. He gives a lot of time for review and sample problems. He also drops the lowest exam, including the final.
He is one of the best professor at valley for maths. Before i took him i used to be really scared of maths but he was an inspiration to me he made me love maths again. 4-5 tests drops the lowest, gives extra credit. Make sure you do the online homework and quizzes he assign. As long as you doing that u can get easy A on your test.
I took this class over the Winter semester, which isn't as bad as you would think it would be, since he's gives the best probability to receive an A. Half your grade is based on tests, and he drops your lowest grade. The other half is based on homework, groupwork, and online quizzes. Overall he's a great teacher, and teaches as a reasonable pace.
Honestly, the three tags don't sum it up enough. Prof Mendoza is amazing! He has a clear grading criteria, and he's organized. All of the homework is through mymathlab. Don't buy the book, take good notes and you'll be fine. He will answer any questions that you have and make examples until you get it. He's respectful and cares about his students.
Professor Raya is amazing! I suggest you take him for any math class. He makes sure that you understand the material and if you don't he explains it in different ways until you understand it. He truly cares for his students. He's also makes his lectures fun. Had 4 tests and quizzes/hw were online. Gave out study guides as well! THOSE WILL HELP!
He's without a doubt the BEST math teacher I've ever had in my life. He's loves math, and you can tell that he does. He showcases that in his lectures. He makes it really easy to understand. If you're lost, he WILL help you! He makes examples until you understand the material. He actually inspired me to change my major and pursue a math career.
This professor is really interactive with the class and genuinely cares for his students. There are many opportunities to get help as he stays 1 hour after class in his office to answer questions. The best professor I've ever had.
Such a great prof! He answers any questions you might have in a way that really explains how and why the material works. Really likes math and it shows! Ntm he's a fun lecturer. Definitely take him if you can
Three tags aren't enough to describe Professor Mendoza. He is an amazing professor and really cares for his students. I was struggling so much in his class and he answered my questions in his office hours. I passed his class with a B. He is the best math professor I have ever had. Too bad he is not teaching Calc 2. :(
Math 265 (calculus 1) was renamed to Math 261. All-around great professor; very passionate, knowledgeable, patient, & often relates lessons to real-world problems. The class is tiring & takes a lot of time, but is much more interesting than preceding classes. Used webassign which seems slightly better than mymathlab. Read your graph calc manual.
I don't know how to put this man into words he is literally the math god in my opinion. He made Calc 1 so much fun for me that its indescribable he's class is not hard as long as you put in the effort and do the hw and group works you should be good. HE IS THE GREATEST TEACHER AT VALLEY DONT HESITATE TO TAKE HIM!!!!!
He's incredible! He really knows his stuff, and he will help you!!! Take him for any math class you may ever need. You won't regret it!!!
BEST MATH PROFESSOR IVE EVER HAD! Take him for any math class you may ever need. You wont regret it!!!
He is the worst professor I have ever had. He is not ready to teach linear algebra at all. All he does is just writing stuff from the book, doesn't explain anything, never answers the questions and always runs away right after the class ends. He doesn't care about students. His test questions are very tough. DONT EVER TAKE HIM.
Professor Mendoza is a great professor. I took math 260 (precal with trigonometry) with him in the summer, which is not a good idea because the class is fast-paced. His lectures are great and he really knows the material, if I could I would definitely take him again without a doubt.
I noticed he made several mistakes in class that students would correct. He also made mistakes on exam solutions. To me, Linear Algebra should not involve so much calculus but he made the final calculus heavy. It's not about testing calculus knowledgeit's about Linear Algebra which it was not. Take Castro if you canyou'll be better off.
Such a great professor, he has a lot of patience and answers every question you have. One of the most professional and knowledgable professors I have came across during my college career. Wish he'd taught every math class. His lectures are very straight forward and he is one funny guy! He cares about his students.
Mendoza is amazing! Definitely will keep my eye out for this professor later on if given the chance. There is however a lot of online homework, so you can just opt for the online version and skip buying the book itself. And btw I just took my final and Im still doing online quizzes left up. BUT he gives amazing feedback, and is always available.
The pest Calculus professor This was the second time, I've taken Math 262. I'm glad that I took Raya. Homework is on-line, quizzes were on-line too. Homework and quizzes are half of the grade. So if your not a good test taker, then you still have a good chance to pass the class through homework and quizzes, Great lecture too and he is very patient.
Very good professor and being young his modern approach to teaching is excellent! Study from the homework and group work! Lenient grader with exams on the tougher side. Definitely better prepared me for Calc2 which I'll be taking with him. 4 exams+quizzes+final+hw. How many Students Take Calculus? Answer: All students take Calculus :)
I have failed calculus two times. I have failed it during my senior year at high school, and I have failed it during my freshman year of college. I had a very tough time with the subject, but when I took Prof. Mendoza's class I understood it through his concise, understandable, and sometimes funny lectures. P.S I did all his homework and asked Qs
Excellent professor. Has a practical teaching style which makes lectures interesting. Teaches the advanced concepts to make sure we are more than prepared for exams, which are congruent to group work and easier than HW! Why a lot of professors only teach the basics and make exams v hard, idk. I feel a lot more confident taking higher level math!
In all honestly he is one of the best math professors in LAVC. I have taken another professor before and they don't truly care like Raya does. His study guide is the classwork he give outs because those questions are what is on the test. He will always answer all the questions you have and will help you out when needed.
70% of your grade is based on 4 exams plus the final (he drops the lowest score). The rest is participation and homework. Homework is time consuming. He isn't condescending when you ask questions, he's helpful and caring. He doesn't use the textbook for homework, so you can just buy the online code (its half the price).
Took for Linear over summer. Liked him a lot better for Calc1/2. Unresponsive to emails, sometimes late on posting HW, rushed through a lot of material (meh, its 5week class). Few concepts you had to learn yourself that were on exams. Final was absurd hard, def could have been better formulated. Professor always slow on grades. He's OK for Math270.
I took Linear Algebra with him this past summer. Its a fast paced class; It WAS a summer class though! He could be a slow grader at times, but hes FAIR. He gives out partial credit. He has office hours like crazy, hes super helpful. And gives out study guides! He explained the material well, you just have to work like in any other math class.
Has amazing office hours, I mean come on, who hosts office hours on Friday AND Saturday? He truly cares about his students. Hes a fair grader, keen on partial credit. Lectures are good, take him!
Raya Mendoza should avoid teaching Linear Algebra. He's a knowledgeable professor, but the way he gets that knowledge is not so good. Some assigned homework has nothing to do with class lessons. He does care however, good office hours. Just get ready to study a lot in this class, because his worksheets can be very confusing.
This was my second time taking Linear Algebra. Its a difficult class, but hes really helpful. Has awesome office hours and provides worksheets that are basically the test. He doesnt try to trick you, his worksheets are study exams! He just changes the numbers. Drops the lowest exam, including the final.
Mendoza is above average we dont have alot of good math profs at LAVC atm. Linear is not easy,I felt that alot of stuff he covered he did an ok job. He gives worksheets which are suppose to help you for the test but alot of times the questions he gives arent in the book or they are questions he makes them up. he 1000x is better than Castillo.
He is good prof and cares about his students. Diff eq is very calc 2 heavy so beware! He expects you to know linear but will help you if you dont know it. I wish he didnt rush laplace or eigen in the last week of class since they are really important. His lectures was like rereading the book and the book that he uses was not good. Thats why 4/5
Group work assignments are very similar to tests. Score well on your first few exams so you can skip the final. You will learn the procedure for many of the problems well, but not much of the theory/application of diff. eqs. Typical exam questions are more focused on diff. eq. than calc. 2 integration techniques. The last few chapters are rushed.
The exams are similar to the group work but not all of them. Sometimes would pick out proofs from the notes and make up his own questions. The final is cumulative. He's nice overall but doesn't give out solutions on online homework like other profs. Doesn't provide lots of examples during lectures either so I have to read more from the book.
This guy is a real gem. His office hours says it all - always accessible and genuinely cares about the student. My biggest kudos is his teaching. He makes the connection; he understands what might be confusing and he navigates his students through those pitfalls. His lectures are great. He prepares his students for exams. Great professor!
Hes amazing, a true mathematician.
He is very nice and patient. Explains calculus concepts in a very simple and understandable way. Overall 5 tests(4 quizzes and 1 final). He drops the lowest grade including final which is great! I was able to skip the final. An easy A calculus class! Take him!
Mendoza is amazing. His lectures are clear and straight to the point. He gave our class group work and if you answered everything on there you were pretty much set for the tests. Hes generous when it comes to grading the tests too. I left the class feeling very educated on the subject as well as prepared for the next courses. Thanks professor!
Never responds to emails, considered multiple times sending a messenger pigeon. Takes forever to grade, he didn't grade 80% of the assignment and just posted the final grade. Doesn't provide examples during lecture, its really difficult since he skips a lot of the steps take a different professor.
MAJOR REGRET HRM for Calc 3. Only math "teacher" I've had who refuses to work out ANY examples for students. His idea of "answering" is to give you "hints" so you can "go from here." Spends the whole class doing proofs and theory, you get ZERO help on problem sets. Tests are comparatively easy, but the HW load is killer and he's mean. Strong AVOID.
His lectures tend to drag a lot since our break isnt until class is over. His tests are based on the GW assignments but when asking for help he only gives hints and thinks its enough to help us get the correct answer. Had to teach myself majority of the class & taught lectures before finals which didnt give enough time for studying.
I've taken all my upper level Math classes with Professor Mendoza after struggling in Calculus with the other professors at LAVC. I took Calc 1, 2 and Linear Algebra with him and he is by far the best professor when it comes to lecturing the material, keeping it interesting and being helpful throughout the class. Take his course you wont regret it!
He is a solid professor. The class is very difficult but he explains the concepts well. Make sure to go to office hours for help with the problems. His tests are difficult but he gives partial credit and drops your lowest grade.
he doesnt want to grade a single test. never answers to emails. all our tests were based off were groupwork assignments. it seems like he doesnt know how to teach cause he never answers when you ask for help.
He's a great teacher, ez grader too, but made us do tedious groupwork that in the end wasn't very helpful for learning the material (our tests aren't group tests after all) Plus, he graded some exams WRONG. His answers to some questions were totally wrong, and you'll lose points because of this. Use symbolab to check the answers and inform him.
Professor Mendoza's lectures were very entertaining and were never boring at any point. His tests are easy if you know the material and if you do the groupwork assignments, you will pass them. The major downside is that he takes a REALLY long time to grade stuff. But if you have the patience, I would highly recommend.
I've taken plenty of math classes at valley college and this was the first time the professor would activity slurp his coffee during lecture. His writing is unlegible and his notes are terribly crunched together. I found it really hard to read the math he was writing. It felt as if he was just copying from the book. I had to drop.
Down to Earth and cares about teaching in general. I took him in Fall 2018 and am recommending him to my sibling whose about to enroll in CC as well. Goes over all material that you will see on the exam. However, I struggle with Math theorems in general, hence went to office hours and this is the only reason I got an A.
Not an easy class. Exams are watched by zoom and proctor. Homework online, need to buy a book with an online code. Tests are impossible.
I really enjoyed this class. He makes his class and lectures so clear and understandable. Just study and ask him for help when you need. Exams are very doable if you know the lectures. Take his class if you get a chance. Perfect Professor with good manner. Thank you so much Professor!
Professor Mendoza is a brilliant teacher, a fair grader, and a consistent professor despite the pandemic. He teaches in a way where students can arrive towards the answer on their own. His lectures are fast-paced; however, if you make the effort to interact with him during his lectures and office hours, he will invest his time towards your success.
HIS LECTURE EXAMPLES ARE VERY HELPFUL FOR THE EXAMS. DO ALL THE GROUP WORK AND YOU WILL DEFINITELY PASS ALL HIS EXAMS. IF YOU ARE EVER LOST DURING THE LECTURE, DO NOT HESITATE TO ASK. IF YOU ARE HAVING A HARD TIME ANSWERING THE GROUP WORK, JUST ASK. HE EITHER GIVES YOU HINT TO ANSWER THE PROBLEM OR ANSWERS THE PROBLEM FOR YOU. PLEASE DO TAKE HIM!!!
Great professor, cares about his students. Gives you every opportunity to do well. Took his Linear Algebra winter course and had a great time learning from him. Highly recommend.
Really good Math Prof
Lectures are leaning more towards solving proofs than doing examples. Proofs WILL be on exams. Study them. Four exams with the groupwork assignment meant to serve as study guide but it's not a real representation of exam. No study guide for final exam given. Don't expect anything on canvas to be graded and expect tests to be given back weeks later
The class was advanced but the professor made things easy to understand. Would highly recommend.
I think I would have honestly failed this material if I hadn't taken it with this Professor.
Good class. Would recommend.
Best professor at LAVC for math classes.
Fantastic professor, great lectures, explains everything clearly, clear grading criteria. Not necessarily an easy class, but definitely worth the effort.
Class is composed of majority proofs and concepts that are very abstract. Teaching style follows the book and is slightly over complicated. Homework is in webassign. Tests are similar to groupworks. Does NOT post grades but does give tests back upon grading. First couple weeks of class are difficult because a lot of new content is being introduced.
Caring professor but doesn't have strong math skills. Chronically making mistakes on the whiteboard. He isn't super accurate with his math. He teaches shortcuts other professors don't use. If you need the class to get by, like an accelerated course, he is a good professor to take. He isn't my cup of tea but a lot of people like him.
Lectures perfectly follow topics covered in the textbook and are so easy to follow, even for a slower learner like myself. Group work assignments are given for further practice and can be used as study guides for exams. Exams are extremely fair and so is his grading. Would take again.
I took Professor Mendoza's Precalc class over winter and it was great! Professor Mendoza is super kind and cares about his students understanding and is very encouraging. Don't be afraid to ask questions! It was a super-fast paced class since it was winter, so you will have to put in time for self-study!
Professor Mendoza is absolutely GOATED!!! Took him for 8 wk calc1/2. He cares deeply about his students and their understanding of the material. Amazing lesson plan. Always available for office hours and if you don't understand something from a previous math class he has no problem doing side review. Study the groupworks and you'll get an A!
He would ruin your GPA. Too much homework like this is the only class in the school. He doesn't explain things well.
Great Calc Professor who is extremely lenient in test grades and explains concepts clearly. Almost impossible to not get an A since the tests are also based off of group works. Online homework can be tiring since it is a fast paced course but still doable regardless. would totally recommend especially if u are new to calculus!
The professor did not post grades until the course was over. Lots and lots of homework. Did not explain well during lectures was expected to know things already even though it's Calc 1. No breaks in those 2 1/2 hours.
