nice, a little boring, tries to inject too much of his liberal political beliefs into course lectures, a little self-righteous, multiple choice tests
He is a nice person, but sucks as a professor. He spaeks very low and in the same tone of voice throw out the whole class. He makes history a VERY boring subject. The only good thing is that he gives multiple choice test and he gives ques before.
Seems like a good professor but gives way too many writing assignments. Just to start off you will need to write journals for every class. But I agree with the other comments, the multiple choice tests are a plus.
I strongly disagree with some of the comments. This Professor is very thoughtful and more than willing to help students improve. While his course is demanding, it is worth it - especially if you have writing problems as I had it really helped me.
I hate this class and everything about it. Kirkland needs a heads up and needs to lighten up a bit with his plagerinzing crap. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLAss. TO MUCH WRITING AND TO LITTLE LEAAARNING
Not very hard at all, gives alot of papers that sucks unless you like writting 5 papers, plus 25 journals all based on readings every chapter do not take this class. Tests are easy you learn alot gives all away all the answers to the tests.
he is sooooooooooo human. i want to marry him.
Class was great! Just scan the reading and utilize the study aids he hands out!!!
I enjoyed this class, the writing assignments are a bit much, but it helped my writing to improved. Do what is required, his quizes are multiple choice and be prepared to do 3-4 papers. Any professor who only gives you multiple choice insults your intelligence.
fair grader, requires work for his writing entensive class.
He's nice but boring. Sorry, professor. It was too much work and so little learning. He gives too many historical dates that no student will ever remember instead of focusing on those events that really matter. I really tried to like this class, but I couldn't. If you are wondering, I got an A.
Taking this class, you will practically never get a normal lecture. his communication skill are so low that he is not able to explain himself. his physical apperance is beyond any norm, i believe college professor has to wear some kind of underwear, esspecialy if he is constantly sweating. i wound not suggest this class even to my enemy.
Easy A!!! Just study the test prep questions. He does however go on and on about dates, but in the end is pretty easy. Alot of writting but hey did you think you were going to go to college and not write?
Cool professor at times can be boring if you did not do the work. He does try to help you and like to make jokes at times. Pay attention and no doubt you will pass
A little intimidating but SOOOOO worth it. I feel smarter and more capable after taking his class. It also doesn't hurt that he's like this big hot brilliant mountain man. Real easy to look at!
Ok.. you're gonna get an A in this class if you have at least 4 brain cells and aren't completely lazy. However, this may very well be one of the most boring professors I've ever had.. it was a struggle just to stay awake in class. You probably won't learn squat about History either. You NEED the book. 3 papers, some quizes and a lot of E.C.
i honest to god don't think he knows anything. he comes late to class (always sweating profusely) & answers questions by asking other members of the class to give their opinions--which inevitably don't have anything to do with the orginal question and are illogical, at which point he'll consider his job done. he also thinks very highly of himself
Great Prof. super easy, well not really but his test are awesomely easy. I would definately recommend him to anyone.
You have to be extrordinarily lazy to fail his class. First of all he tells you exactly what will be on the test so as long as you study you will do well there. With his papers he expects a little more from you, but if you are at all articulate you'll do well there too. Lastly, the journals are all extra credit and add 20% to your grade. Easy
I want to have his baby! He is a very nice person, very knowleageable about his subject matter. You must participate in class and do a good job on his papers, his tests are to die for, he gives you a prep test, what else do you want?I have taken 2 of his classes and he is a total GPA booster! he is perfect! Run to take his class, is worth it!
What a fun class. Who knew history could be fun? He is very humorous with his lectures. His quiz’s and tests have a lot of questions, but he gives his students the questions before hand. As long as you do the readings you will do well. His papers are also fun to write… if you do the readings. What’s more, the journals are worth doing. They c
He is not a bad professor, but I wished that he would go over materials more thoroughly to make it easier on students to be prepared for the exams. Everytime when an exam comes up, he just gives the prep exam and you have to find the answers and it is hard. The good part about him is that he gives student chances to revise work for better grades.
I don't know why so many people are giving Kirkland such good ratings because he has terrible teaching methods. He doesn't go over the materials for the exams. He expects you to know on your own. If he teaches that way, he might as well not teach the class at all.
He is a terrible professor. He does not go over the materials for exams. He expects you to know the info on your own by using the textbook. If you are one of those students that don't like textbooks, then don't take him.
He cannot teach. All he does is make brief notes on the board and talks. When the exam comes up, non of the materials and notes are on the exam. He just gives you a prep exam to study and expects you to know the info by using the textbook. If you love reading textbooks then he is right for you but if you are not, don't take him.
He does not go over materials for exams. If you want a professor who goes over materials for exams, don't take him.
slack-off prof, lots of writing which u can cheat the summary @ back of the book he wilnot notice.if u wanna learn somtin from college don't take him. notworth it AT ALL but if u r lookin 4 A,get him. tests r multiple choice so he can slack off don't have to correct them.honestly,we(all classmates) memorized the answer just b4the tests.boring yawn!
bring a pillow to class,u may need it coz his talking puts u to sleep.lots of journals,2 papers and some multiple choice tests.u wil learn NOTHIN but a lesson that u made wrong choice.u can read text at home but u need good lecture2.Though he bad @ teaching,he expects good quality works.don't waste yr $ n time.college=learning.i guaranteed my words
he is great take all. 2 short papers fun to write. and all multiple choice test. He knows his stuff. class was very fun. just do the readings he gives, and you will do great
Great History Prof.
A hard professoer to have. He is chalenging but you learn in his class. Some times makes fun of you when you ask a question. I got a good grade from him. Writting assignments are tough to get a.
IT WAS AN INTERESTING, AND REASONABLE CLASS.I liked the tests, and just listen, and do the work, and you'll pass.
HE IS THE WORST HUMAN BEING AND I MEAN IT
THE BEST EVER TEST ARE MULT CHOICE. AND 2 PAPERS. REALLY NIUCE IF U WANT TO LEARN. OO NYEA HE GIVES YOU THE ANSWERS FOR THE TEST AS WELL. YOU JUST NEED TO FIND THEM.
The subject is interesting but this man is a horrible teacher! He never explains anything, he never articulate's his questions and he makes a lot of inappropriate remarks. By inappropriate I mean offensive religious remarks and **** grabage talk. A lot of my classmates feel the same way and it's shocking to see how many think he's great.
At first he seems very hard but really if you read the book, do ur papers, come in 2 class everyday & participate u will have a good grade.Sometimes he can be rude & corney but he give you a lot of chances to do the work.He gives u the exact question from the test.As long u do the work u will be fine & ignore his comments & don't take it personal.
Good professor. Lots of writing assignments. Be ready to read the textbook thoroughly. Lots of assignments to improve grades.
One of the best teachers I've had here. He clearly outlined the course in his syllabus. Those who consider him "rude" are actually rude themselves - what with their private conversations and poor attitude. Complaining about having to actually read the text? Amazing. This is college!
One of the best history teachers, this is one of the few teachers in college who I've met that is reasonable, easy... a gaurenteed A+ if you do what you do your part as a student...
Kirkland will talk down to students, and is disrespectful with his off color personal remarks. He is a awful teacher and will just try to show off his knowledge which is limited. He actually once said " if i took the quiz( speaking on a quiz he recently gave ) i would get 100" He will talk down to students and treats them with no respect.
I took US His.You will have 2B at ur Best when writing his paper in order to get close to an A on the essays. He can B kind of rude at times He told to put the tests study sheet away after my group and i had finished the class work on time. That got me really mad.U need to read ur book if u want2 do well.U also need to participate in class.
It's not the easiest class. The journals are hard to keep up. Some people complain that there's too much writing, uh..you're in college, you have to work. You have to read, you have to do SOME work on your own. You cannot get any easier on the multiple choice tests. However, he is a hard grader on the essays.
Loved the class it was fun, hes such a sweetheart! He plays these hilarious videos with this guy who has the best accent. He tells jokes, and keeps the work load like. Pay attention, participate, do the work and youll get an A.
The first time he came to class I thought he came out from a history textbook. But he cut most of his hair. He sucks at grading essays, I always gotten A on my essay, but in this class it was always a B. He is easy when it comes for grading, but the bad thing is you might become lazy to do work. Do all journals!!! That would help you pass with an A
He is a great professor the key to passing your class is all in the book he gives you a prep to prepare for test so just study and you'll do well .. Journals are very helpful do them ! They count a lot at the end .. I got an A for his class because of the test preps and journals :)
The only complaint I really have about this guy is his grading method. His tests are okay, he actually gives you the questions and answers to fill out at home, ALL multiple choice, but his essays are the part that get me the most. I put a ton of effort into my essays, and yet I got a C- on both. Also, he makes a lot of really bad jokes.
You can write A papers in every English class in the world, but he will give you a B. journals help to pass the class, but if you want an easy A don't take. For every test he gives he gives the questions to you so just study answers, but he is truly terrible at grading essays!!!
Best professor ever.He gives you every opportunity to generate points in his class from journals to extra credit museum assignments. He has a dry sense of humor, which I thought was funny. He will appreciate your participation if you deserve it.Work Hard and get an easy A+You can get an A,even if you receive a C on a final from the extra credit work.
He is not great but not bad at all. If you try hard he will notice and help you out. DO THE JOURNALS. They really help save your grade. Get the main text book, he'll ask multiple papers and activities from it. He will give you any chance possible to earn extra credit.
He puts a video for the students to watch just about everyday of another man teaching the class, then he somewhat goes over it. Gives a chapter or two a week to do for homework, midterm was 50 questions and an essay. The review sheet didn't help at all. Two museums assignments that you have to do. If you fail the midterm you're not going to pass.
He is a good teacher , I respect him except to read quizzes one essay final exam 50 questions.
Nice, but as a professor I've had better. He relies on video clips and doesn't write notes, just talks. Makes the class boring and not interesting. Doesn't give enough information, you will need to rely on textbook chapters. Test questions are given before the test. It's like an automatic A on the test. If you want to learn DONT TAKE THIS CLASS!
Expect no hand-holding in this class-- you must buy AND READ the text to pass. Expect to learn most of the material from the book. His lectures and video clips supplement the book and explain more complicated topics. The journals and museum extra-credit trips are really helpful for improving your grade. Laughing at his jokes doesn't hurt either.
He gave two tests the whole semester, his class is based on his own political views and isnt really interested in creating an engaging enviornemnt. He doesnt teach but gives videos to teach for him
He's really funny. He is a good professor if you are a visual learner because he shows a lot of videos. Which worked in my case but may not work for others. I found him fairly easy, as long as you do the journals. They are optional but trust me DO THEM! Do not miss more than two classes either or be late! He's very strict about that!
after taking the first excm and he gives you it back he writes what your grade can possibly in the class and what you can do to improve it he is such a tough grader very hard and he does not give you the chance to say what you want to say with out him having a silly remark for what you said .
You need to work hard for your grade which is good because it challenges you to work for what you want and shows you how hard work pays off he gives you and exam to study for and its the same questions which makes life so easy he gives many chances and extra credit so do what he gives you and you will get a good grade he is a very strict grader
If you want to watch boring videos and hear LOTS of humorless jokes then this is the prof for you. We spent most of the term watching EXTREMELY boring videos then he uses the last fifteen minutes of class to talk about the topic. When you ask him a question it's either "I don't know cause I wasn't there" or "We don't have time and I need to finish"
his lectures are BORING. he's a tough grader but at least he gives you a second chance to re-do work. PARTICIPATION IS A MUST. "you will not get an A if you don't participate" - it's clearly stated in the syllabus. cool thing about him: gives all test questions as a test review sheet and selects questions from the review sheet for the actual test.
I'm a teaching major&what I have learned is:engage your lesson with the students, have a connection with your students, give feedback in which students can improve work... and what he does is the total opposite. Very hard grader, he doesn't tell you whats wrong just gives you a bad grade for it.
A lot og assignments! Research papers and journals are must. Still grades very bad. Don't understamd anything in the class. I have done a great mistake by taking his class. I don't recommend him.
Had him before and failed the first time. Teacher really helped me out and didn't hold it against me that I failed the class before. Was really worth it to ask questions after class and during office hours. Also, helped having a teacher that allowed me to revise my papers and do extra credit journals. Looks like this time I will be getting an A!
At first I felt lost in this class and thought there was no way I could ever pass. But then I saw how his journal and museum assignments helped me to learn at my own pace and way. Also, what I didn't understand in class the professor helped me during his office hour and helped me to revise my papers and keep me on track and moved from a C- to an A!
Great teacher! He inspired me to become a history major! Didn't just teach from the text, but helped me to develop my own opinion and stand by it. Allows for and encourages revising papers. I too thought he was a "harsh grader" till I realized he was trying to get me to think for myself and improve and be the best I can be.
Professor Kirkland is amazing! He made history interesting and easy to understand. Gives a lot of reading and writing assignments - which are mostly extra credit, so one way or another if you really apply yourself it is pretty easy to get a good grade out of this class. Wish he taught more classes, as his teaching method really helped me a lot.
Great professor. Don't understand some of the comments , as he gives every opportunity to improve and gain credit in his class from journals to museum assignments to revising your paper. He has a dry sense of humor, which I thought was funny. Participation helps. Work hard and get an easy A!
Loved this class! it was fun, he was so caring in and out of class - always available to answer questions after class or during his office hour. He plays these hilarious videos which really helped me understand history. He tells jokes, and keeps the work load light. Pay attention, participate, do the work and you'll do well.
Great teacher! Really helped inspire me about history and the world. Helped to bring history alive by connecting current events with what we were learning. Totally amazing teacher.
Learned so much in this class. At first I felt overwhelmed and didn't see how I could pass. Mr. Kirkland was so helpful and was always available after class that in the end I not only passed, but got an A in the class! His jokes always made the class light and his way of mentioning current events made the class more interesting and valuable.
Great teacher! I was gong through a tough family situation and the teacher was very understanding and very helpful and gave me the guidance I needed to do well. Very easy going and good sense of humor.
Really inspiring. Loved this class! Really made history and politics come alive for me in this class. Very helpful professor who gives 2nd chances and allows for plenty of extra credit work and ways to improve your grade. If you do well early on, you don't have to take the final exam - which really helps!
Loved this class! Wish he were teaching our classes too! Not too difficult, as long as you pay attention and follow the directions - and even if you don't he gives you a 2nd shot at it, so what is there to lose? Great teacher, would gladly take him again. Wish there were more like him at BMCC.
One of the best professors. Gives many options over the semester and drops the lowest grade, so if you play your cards right you might find that you don't need to even take the final exam. Offers extra credits if you need them. Everything was so smooth through out the semester and he is very polite.
I was pleasantly surprised by this class. At first I was overwhelmed as history isn't my subject. But he made it so easy and was so helpful - and gave so many chances to improve my grade, along with extra credit! Great class and I learned a lot! Now I like history!
Such a treasure! Great class and great teacher. So happy to have ended up in this class. He really helps the students and gives them multiple chances. Loved this class!
Had a blast in this class! Professor make this so much fun and accessible for students. From chances to revise work, to dropping the lowest grades to extra credit work and credit for discussion board posts - made this an easy class to do well in. Would gladly take a class with him again!
Very easy going and makes history fun. Extra credit assignments if you need it. Also, drops the lowest grade and gives extra credit if you do everything, so pretty hard not to pass or do well in his class. Great teacher! Really cares about the students and wants them to succeed.
Great Teacher! Love this class so far! This teacher makes it so easy for students. Seems like only the lazy students who don't do the work fail, otherwise he drops the lowest grade and gives extra credit and plenty of opportunities to succeed in his class. Would gladly take another class with this teacher!
Really enjoyed this class. And he really made it easy for me and others - drops the lowest grade on quizzes and exams and gives extra credit assignments. What's not to like? Even if you bomb a exam, you can still turn things around and end up doing well in the class. Would gladly take this teacher again, as he really helps students.
Loved this class! And I'm not even a history major. He really made history come alive for me. And even when I didn't get at first and didn't do well on my 1st quiz, he drops the lowest grade and gives so many opportunities to do well in the class - would gladly take this professor again! Great class and teacher!
Easy A, just do the work. And even though I'm not a history major I really enjoyed this class. It helps to participate and is difficult when people don't. I enjoyed the class most when people participated and weren't just blobs, and when they weren't his lectures always amazed me. Very helpful and cares about the students.
Hard not to do well. Only those who are lazy end up failing or not doing well. Easy A, as he drops the lowest quiz and exam grade and gives extra credit. I was able to get an A and didn't have to take the final exam! But if you take the final and did the work, he gives extra credit for the final exam. Lectures and videos were great too.
So inspiring and helpful! Loved this class and would gladly take him again. He definitely made it easy - and even if you didn't do well on a quiz or exam, he drops the lowest grade so it is pretty much stacked in your favor. Not to mention he really made history come alive and relevant for me. Great class!
Awesome professor who really cares for students. If you don't understand or have trouble passing, ask him and he really helps! I know because I was one of those students too afraid to ask questions - then I did and the class got so much easier! Also, with extra credit and allowing to revise work I went from a B- to an A in the class! Love him!
Great teacher! Professor Kirkland is very easy going and constantly reminds students of due dates. So many opportunities given to do well in this class - would gladly take another class with this professor!
Great teacher! So many opportunities given to do well in this class - would gladly take another class with this professor! Really helps students, like me, who didn't do well at first and gives the opportunity to still succeed in the class. I ended up loving history in the end.
Such a breath of fresh air! Just do your discussion posts and show up (I promise it's not hard). He constantly reminds you of due dates, and he truly does care about the material. He even lets you have an entire week or two to work on quizzes/tests and encourages you to show him what you have before submitting it.
He is an amazing professor! I took HIS as an elective and it was so interesting to learn history with him. His classes are diverse with lots of films and not boring lectures. It's easy to receive a good grade and hard to fail. I would definitely retake him.
Great teacher! Professor Kirkland is very easy going and constantly reminds students of due dates. So many opportunities given to do well in this class - would gladly take another class with this professor! Had a great time in this class and really enjoyed this history class.
Had a great time in this class. Really learned a lot and his easy manor, yet firm deadlines with options to still succeed with dropping one exam/quiz and extra credit assignments makes this an easy class to succeed in. Would gladly take other courses with this professor!
