He is a horrible teacher. His lectures are straight out of the book and if you ask questions in class, he talks down to you.
He does not give a lot of partial credit on the midterm. Its either you know it or not. His lecture are boring and you can just read the book to understand the class.
Terrible, unprepared lecturer (not a Prof, I hope!--no matter what his syllabus says). Lectures right out of the book in an impossible-to-follow style. Managed an A, but worked my tail off reading--exams are open-book notes, so make sure you know where stuff is.
Even though it was hard to follow the lectures sometime, he was the best one of all the other teachers (Oklabzija, Akella, Redinbow), teaching this course! He was very helpful if you asked for it. Very nice and funny at times.
Horrible Lecturer. He basically gives no partial credit for the midterms and if your program is slightly off, you can only get very little partial credit.
Exam grading policies are very poor, little to no partial credit for small mistakes.
most of the students get A's and all previous hw solutions are available, get to drop one hw, and exams are relatively easy
Al-Assad is an increadable professor. I took EEC 180a and 180b with him. His lectures are clear and easy to follow. Study practice exams, they really help. His exams and grading are fair. He always makes himself available for help. Do not take digital systems with any other professor. His test averages are higher and you will learn a lot more.
Great teacher, very helpful and nice personality as well. Very knowlegable on the material and lectures are easy to follow, although he goes a bit fast. Fair midterms and final, grading is lenient. He's my favorite professor in the EEC department, highly recommended!!
Labs and homework are easy but the majority of your grade depends on midterms and final. And unfortunately, there's a horrible grading system on the latter. Partial credit is virtually nonexistent. You either got the problem or you didn't. You mess up on one problem in any of the midterms and you're grade is pretty much dead. If you can, avoid.
Nice man, likes to see young engineers succeed
Programs were easy. Taught pretty clearly. was helpful on OH and is very knowledgeable. but midterm/final were really hard, partly because of a lack of time to finish, but also because of some nasty surprises. getting a decent grade isn't impossible, but requires good test taking skills and finishing the HW. still a decent prof.
very helpful. goes out of his way to make sure you understand the material. go to lectures, ask questions, and read the book and you'll do fine. midterm and final are easy if you understand the concepts in the homework. overall, good professor.
Okay professor. He gets pretty frustrated when questions are asked in class but he knows his stuff. Definitely listen to lectures and study hard for tests. Homework is decent.
I found him to be easy, partly because i took the class over summer. The midterm was difficult (didn't get much sleep), but just slept before the final and did awesome. You get a sheet of notes for the midterms, which is useful. Homework helped, but the book wasn't good (so go to lecture)
Most of his classes entailed solving examples. If that suits you, then you will enjoy it. The midterms test your creativity on the harder problems, and I found that I didn't need the note sheets he allows. Labs can be long and tiresome. Homework is really easy, and the book we used was horrible. His review lectures make the midterms easy.
Assad's not the best teacher around, but he's well organized, easy to understand, and won't make the class any harder than it has to be. My one complaint is he doesn't like to give much partial credit on exams.
Really nice and helpful guy. His lectures are organized and clear despite having and accent. Highly recommended!
Poor guy, he teaches a really hard class, but does a wonderful job at it. His tests aren't too generous though, but he allows a page (front and back) of your own created cheat sheet that you may bring to midterm, and 2 pages front and back for the final. It helps. Office hours helped alot. He was an overall okay instructor. Nothing to brag about
Great lecturer- he's super clear at explaining things. If you're taking the summer session, he does warn you that it goes by fast, so keep on top of things always.I think he's the best lecturer for this class- if you don't at least pass w/ him, you aren't going to have much luck elsewhere.
I took him for SSI and he's great. He goes over the topic answering all the what's, how's and why's. He has sample midterms and finals that he goes over before the tests. They are extremely helpful. If you understand them, you pretty much AT LEAST have a B. He's probably the best teacher for this class. Akella sucks so don't take him.
Great Prof. Very clear in his explanations. Very to the point in his presentations. I'm glad he didn't use powerpoints. He is a great blackboard teacher.
His material is tough but still very doable on a busy schedule. Final project was difficult and most people didn't build the final circuit since debugging it would cut into studying for the exam. I've had this professor for 3 classes and he is fair, straightforward, and overall a very good lecturer. Would strongly recommend.
Professor Al-Assad is one of the nicest engineering professors you will meet at the UCD institution. He is very kind, clear, and fair. I took his class Fall 2013 and had a broken leg at the time. Professor Al-Assad was one of the few professors who remained in contact with me via email and helped me stay on track to finish the quarter.
Professor Al-Assad is really kind and helpful. He covers a lot of material during lecture. It's sort of like he's reading the textbook to you but he explains it really clearly. His exams are difficult but doable, you just got to spend a little bit more time thinking about how to solve them. Also, it's an open book exam. Hw & projects are also easy.
Hw and Projects were very easy, exams very difficult. Average of exams were 50/100 and 42/100. Did not give much partial credit on exams.
One of the most caring professors in the ECE department. His lectures have relevant examples that are very useful when doing homework and taking exams. Exams require you to think though however they are doable and you have to remember that the questions aren't complicated.
Al-Assad is the best you can get for 180A. The downfall is he is quite fast, but as a result he gets through tons of examples. All of his midterms require a lot of practice, but given that they are doable (never quite easy). Homework is simple, you need to do more. Give yourself a lot of time for the labs. Textbook is filled with mistakes!
Moves super quick but is excellent at explaining and OH. If you do the practice midterms and actually understand you will do well
The material was straight forward but he was a really tough grader. He gave minimal partial credit on exams and our midterm averages were 45100 and 48100. He made up for it though, by adding 20 points to each of our midterms and making a cumulative 85% an A-. Overall, he was quite difficult but I enjoyed the class.
His exams are decently difficult. If you practice enough problems, you should be able to do his exams. The problem is partial credit on his exams are rare, so make sure you double check your work. He's pretty clear during lectures, but he goes pretty fast.
I have had very very few bad professors at UC Davis. In fact, I have generally enjoyed most of my professors, and when I don't, I still feel like I actually learn something. However, Al-Assad feels like a different category to me. He leaves me wondering why I should ever care about the topic, and fails to explain any of it intuitively.
Assad's lectures are mostly about solving example problems while he is a bit fast-paced. He is so nice this quarter that he even drops the lowest midterm of the two!! Grading criteria not clear and rarely gives partial credits. hws are easy and small amount.
He is a amazing professor. Everything becomes easy after he explained and he uses a lot of examples to illustrate. He is very encouraging and patient. At the beginning of the quarter he would upload all the course materials which is more than sufficient for us to review. Also his test is 100% related to what he covers in the class.
The most caring prof. in the ECE dept. Always helpful at OH. Lectures very fast, but he doesn't post notes online so do not miss class! Posts ample amount of resources like old exams with solutions to help you practice. 1st exam is killer, but he designs 2nd exam to be "easier" and to help soften the blow if you didn't do great. Labs were fine.
Very good professor. I had him for EEC 180A and ENG 17. His exams are very fair and the homework load isn't ridiculous. I went to his office hours whenever I was confused and explained everything practically and clearly. I think that he cares about his students a lot.
Hussain is definitely one of ECE best profs. Though his lectures are very fast, just keep up in class and take good notes and youre fine. Gives lots of practice materials for midterms and finals and has in class review sessions. Also very helpful in office hours.
The average of the class is so high and his lecturing is so good that you dont need a book. And he is a very nice guy.
Good guy, organized class, fast lecturer, no online notes so attendance is a must, lots of old exams with practice problems, never was blindsided on a test, generous grading scale, allows 1 page cheat sheet each midterm, labs weren't too bad, learned a lot, was quick to reply to emails, welcoming during OH, Sry there's a character limit!
He is very nice and loves to help during office hours. This class is fun and tests are fair. There's hardly any homework.
Al-Assad goes very quick, but as long as you keep up you'll do fine. Everyone does bad on the first midterm but then they get better. Make sure to solve all the practice exams, time goes by super fast when you're taking the test. His lectures tell you everything you need to know for lab/tests/hw. Go to office hours if you need help, he's great.
Al-Asaad is a good guy and his 286 grad class is excellent. If you enjoyed the digital systems puzzles of 180a and want to take it to the next level I strongly recommend this class. Not much knowledge is needed for it beyond 180a knowledge. Taught us very well in lecture and we never needed to open the book.
Al-Asaad has amazing lectures. He goes relatively quick but will answer any questions, and is straightforward when it comes to what is expected for midterms and homework. I highly recommend going to lecture because you won't ever need the book if you do. EEC 286 and how he taught it was one of my most enjoyable classes taken within the department.
Great professor. His practice exams were very similar to his actual exams. The hardest part of the class is all of the algebra and math, so make sure to practice that and be ready for it. Al-Assad is a very generous grader, so even though I got a D- on the first midterm I was still able leave the class with an A.
As a beginner in programming, Al-Assad went through C programming like nothing and didn't really care much about people without experience. Despite not knowing anything, he was always willing to help during office hours. This was not an easy class at all for beginners in programming especially if this is your first programming class.
Took this course during summer session I. Cool professor, great lectures, homework and practice problems are similar to the exams. Covered most of the topics despite short time. The only bad experience had in this course was with my section TA, she didn't know proper basics of subject, couldn't help me with the lab assignments much.
This man is a legend. If you are able to take circuits with this man, do it by any means necessary. VERY FAIR EXAMS. Looks exactly like his practice exams. Awesome curve, didn't expect to get the grade I got. If you can't pass his class, wait to take it again with him cause he's worth the time and effort. It's a hard class so good luck!
Lectures pretty fast...
One of the worst professors I ever had. Lectures super fast which makes it hard to keep up. Doesn't even post his lecture notes online. Doesn't curve exams when most of the class does poorly. He turned a really interesting subject into a dreadful class.
The topics are mostly recognizing patterns and putting computer logic to practice, which was simple but the lectures are so fast it was impossible to learn. WATCH OUT for the final project worth 9% of your grade. ALSO take your exams for regrades, the TA grading was very unfair. The exams surprised me;similar to practice but couple of curbeballs
Looking retrospectively, i think Assad is an ok professor but there are some things he could've done differently. He goes really fast which is fine, but I preferred him writing on the chalkboard so we could have more time to write things down. He also needs to be more clear about logistics and post about exams / homework through emails.
Lacks compassion for students. I was forced to take an exam at 2:40AM at night just because he cannot accommodate special circumstances. Did decent in the course but he didn't make it any easier. Glad this course is over!
First fully online class due to COVID-19 where I felt like the Prof understood the circumstances. Lecture not mandatory and he uploads everything. He made it very clear that TAs were told to grade easy. Weekly homework, but all doable. He lectures off the book, but doesn't require it. He's very thorough and straight forward. Just don't fall behind!
Overall a good professor. He lectures very very fast. Don't expect to understand core concepts just from being in class alone, as he goes through so much material in so little time. Example problems are explained as if he's doing it alone, instead of laying out his thought processes to college student as he should. Tests are 70% of total grade.
Talks fast and easy grader
Professor Al-Asaad is awesome. He is very clear and explains things well in office hours. I think he can get a bad wrap sometimes because classes like circuits are not easy, no Professor you get where you learn will make this class easy. However, Professor Al-Asaad is considerate, fair, and will help you learn.
Professor Al-Asaad was a very understanding and kind professor. The class was 20% HW, 25% each Midterm (There's 2), and 30% Final. Class was very hard, make sure to pay attention and understand the initial topics as they are very important throughout the course. Circuit problems are HARD!!!, but he gives generous points for difficult problems.
Eng 17 is definitely a difficult class, but prof Al-Assad was an awesome prof. Explains the topics well during lecture. Test are difficult, but he is very fair with partial credit. Homework load is reasonable. Plus he is very accommodating if needed. Don't fall behind on lectures and study the practice exams and you'll be just fine.
Took his first year seminar, "The Fig", and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought it was interesting to see a plant science seminar being taught by an electrical/computer engineer, so I took it. He really has a real passion for figs, and I actually learned a lot from him. Class was graded based off of final project. No homework.
Looking back at my time at Davis. Al-Asaad was one of the better professors there. I would definitely recommend taking his classes. Again there is a handful of professors I recommend in the ECE department, he is one of 4 that really stood out. Take Rashtian, Al-Assad, Juan Sabastian, or Momeni for the majority of your classes and you will LEARN.
Took his first-year seminar about handling faults in systems. He seems to be a very respected faculty in the ECE department. He made the class very simple so that we could focus on our other classes, but I think we learned a lot from doing our presentation and paper. I'm excited to take EEC18 with him in fall!
Overall a decent experience. Lectures were pretty fast paced but were still helpful. Midterms are pretty difficult, but the final was comparatively easy and both midterm grades and the class grade had a generous curve. Homework was minimal but useful. Overall felt like I learned a lot from this class.
He made 180 super easy tbh, only 4 HWs and lowest was dropped. Labs were all very straightforward (other than 6, but TAs were very helpful for that). Exams were pretty simple, no real surprises. Very fair professor, explains everything well and is a nice guy. He literally extended due dates by like 4 days just because one person asked, lol
Great professor and lecture notes were very helpful. TA Satya was the lead TA and hands down, the best ever TA, helped for every single assignment and lab.
Excellent Professor and an easy class. Don't miss any of the TA office hours (especially, Satya and Terry), you will be good with the labs and other concepts.
Good professor, Satya on the other hand was very rude and MEAN
Al-Assad is pretty great lecture wise, you really don't even need the book. His exams can and are tricky, just do what you can, and you will likely be fine. The material isn't pretty difficult to grasp, so just make sure you spend time understanding what each topic and problem say. Besides that, Assad is survivable, just push through
EEC180 with Al-Asaad is not bad at all, and should be taken with him if at all possible. The labs can be kind of annoying, but are doable with enough time (regardless they aren't written by him). His exams were okay for the most part, no curve needed. Just show up to lecture, and study before the exam, and you should be fine.
He is a very nice professor, and makes his lectures interesting. The final is a presentation that you essentially have the entire quarter to think about and work on it. Would recommend this class.
I took this class during summer session. Although his lectures were hard to keep with in class, granted due to the summer session pace. He was very helpful and caring during his office our sessions and is willing to go step by step with you on any problem you request. The tests were fair, very similar to practice. There are also some nice curves.
Handling Faults in Systems Around Us (with Emphasis on Electronic Systems) This class was OK but very boring, especially for an FYS. You just need to complete a research paper and presentation on a topic of your choice; neither has to be high effort because the class is P/NP. The paper at 5 to 7 pages is long for a lower-division course.
Great example of a good and clear professor making a hard class ok. Fair curve at the end of the quarter and lectures are good enough to go without reading the textbook. Labs are terrible and you'll likely spend the entire 4 hours trying to complete them, but that's on the software and FPGA's more that anything else.
took "the fig" FYS and it was very interesting. professor is very passionate about figs/growing produce in general and knows a lot. lectures could sometimes be a little boring, but very small class and P/NP. 1 paper + presentation at the end of the quarter. fun & easy if you're looking to take a seminar.
EEC 18 was a fairly simple class, especially with the lenient grading typical of Asaad's classes.
Professor Al-Assad is by far one of the best professors I've had. His lectures are clear and insightful and he is always open to questions. He answers them very well. He also has entire class sessions dedicated to exam reviews, and his exams are similar to the practice exams. Gentle and caring guy, you can tell he really cares about his students.
Al-asaad was awesome. As long as you go to the lectures and do the homework you will be fine. He was always very nice in office hours. I could not recommend him more.
He just seems to want to finish teaching as quickly as possible, regardless of whether the students understand or not. The homework done had nothing to do with the test, resulting in a low grade point average
Our grade was calculated on three things, HW (30%), MT (30%), and a Final (40%). The biggest issue is that the problems we were tested on in homework versus what is on tests is completely different. The average grade on the midterm was a 56. Grading scale made 65 passing, no clue if I can pass.
He is the 'him' of the electrical engineering teaching staff at Davis. Incredible lectures, easy homework, and lots of resources available for the exams. Highly recommend taking him. A few notes - lectures are very fast-paced, make sure to stay on top of things to keep up with the material. very passionate about the topic - clearly seen in lec.
Take Dr. Al-Asaad for EEC 18! He is incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and accommodating. He holds review sessions before exams and provides lots of resources for you to study from in order to do well on the exams. He is open to student feedback, very approachable during office hours, and genuinely cares about students succeeding in the course.
This man is the GOAT. Homeworks are very straightforward, exam is easy (he drops the lowest 2 problems out of 6), and the material is chill. There's a group project with a presentation and paper due at the end, so don't procrastinate and you'll be fine. He loves late night lectures so most people stop coming after a few weeks.
circuits I is a hard class in general but he explains it well. tests are difficult but there are generous points given for half credit, and problems align with the homework. only critisim is that he is not very good at presenting the equations needed to solve problems things in a clear way. pay attention and do practice problems and you'll be fine.
Very helpful, kind, and extremely patient with questions. Exams can be challenging, but he gives useful information on what to expect. The homework is never too much, but it often does not match the difficulty of his exam problems. Study the textbook, practice consistently, and go to his OH; he knows his stuff well.
I actually very much enjoyed prof Al-Asaad's course. Taught a clearly as he could with the Summer Session limitations. His office hours were so helpful, and he was even willing to help solve the problems with you! Go to OH! He's very accomodatating and you could tell he wants his students to do well. Open note/book MT, and 4 cheat sheets for final!
Moves fast for SS1 (only 6 weeks), but recordings allow you to work at your own pace. Assigns only a few HW problems per chapter weekly. Finished material for each exam a week prior, so plenty of time to prep. Lowers cutoff scores for final grades by 5% + curves exams if needed. Very well-structured class with a prof who wants students to succeed.
very rushed lectures and its impossible to sit there and learn from them. however, he teaches straight from the book, so spending time and going through every problem he lists on your own is extremely helpful. his exams aren't exactly like the practice exams but the practice exams prepare you very well.
