awesome ! knows his stuff. knew him at his previous college; he would help all of us from another professor's class because she was too confusing and he would help us make sense of it all.
easy easy easy. just follow along because his lectures are all pre-outlined on handouts. Stay awake in his class and you will pass his tests easily. and good likeable dorky type personality. harmless and highly helpful.. handholder seriously.
If you come to lecture and just pay attention, you'll pass. Plus, he's funny in that cute, dorky kind of way.
He was a fun guy and very easy to get along with. He drops your lowest midterm and quiz grade, which is helpful. If you follow along with his lectures, there is no reason you won't pass
he's cool. good grader when it comes to tests, h.w. and quizzes. just go to class and do the work. i'm still in his class but i'm nervous about the final. he's nice too.
All tests based off of lectures. There was no text book. Must go to every class. He cracks a couple jokes here and there but mostly they are funny because he is a total bio dork. Always talks about his pet snakes/fish/turtles. Interesting class and straightforward. Have to memorize a lot. Quizzes, Midterms, and article reviews. Good class.
Easy, and clear. I never needed the textbook except for occasional homework. Test are based on his lectures so just go to all his classes, listen to him and take notes.
Pretty easy class considerin it is biology. Sometimes his tests/quizes had really confusing wording so i'd get the questio wrong because he didint proof his tests, but other than that he is easy and clear.
great teacher! seems very young, maybe new teacher, but very excellent with his profession. easy grader, 3 midterms + final, (drops lowest midterm). very fun guy, and very good teacher!
Stuff on tests are not covered in class. Fill in exams and weekly quizzes.
Very easy teacher. gives you all test material in lecture. You you copy everything he writes down and memorize it you will get an A. Gives 3 midterms and 1 final. Lets you drop lowest midterm. I got over 100% on every midterm. Very helpful and understanding. Quiz every week keeps you honest. I would recommend this teacher to anyone!
I think the reason why a lot of students end up dropping or failing his class is because they DON'T STUDY! I mean he is pretty challenging but he does give a lot help with study guides and follows the book so if you miss class READ THE CHAPTER! He has a good sense of humor and he gives a lot of interesting info. Too bad he isn't teaching Bio 210
I thought BIO was going to be hard but Mr. Tran makes it so easy! Especially if all the oher science topic are boring, animals in this class is really easy. Just follow his notes for hte test and you will ace it.
Had him in Fall of 2007. You have 3 tests and 1 final. He drops the lowest test grade. The first test is really easy, make sure to study and Ace it because the second and third are WAY harder. If you Ace the first and second, you can just skip with the third. His tests are about 80% lecture, 20% stuff from the book. He's funny and nice. A+++
Coolest BIO professor I've ever had! Tests are hard, but you can drop the lowest, just be sure to study hard, read the summaries @ the back of the textbook, and look over all notes & quizzes. He should be teaching @ a UC or something but he's easy to understand and always there to help if you have questions.
HARD HARD HARD....HAD 2 DROP THA CLASS...HELA OTHER PPL DID TOO...DNT TAKE IT
Good teacher, always explains the topic clearly. Not a completely easy A, but easy enough I guess.
He describes the subject so clearly. Every once in a while he'll bring in a critter to entertain the class. Easily jokes around but still sticks to teaching. Very good teacher, highly recommended.
Lecture exams are not that hard. Lab exams are difficult. You have to pay attention and take notes during the lab to pass the lab portion. The class overall requires a lot memorization. Fun teacher. Fun class. Not an easy A.
[Zoology] He makes class very fun and is very clear when it comes to lectures. In labs, he takes time to explain anything that you don't understand and he'll keep explaining it until you understand it. You will get a good grade (A or B) if you study his lecture notes, go to class, and read the chapters.
1 credit lab, fun class but it gets confusing if you do not like science. I did much more work than my friend, but he got an A and I got a B? He favors certain students if you talk to him.
This is for sure the easiest lab class to take on campus here at CSM. If you want an easy A take this class, just make sure you turn in the weekly homeworks, because they make up most of your grade! The quizzes are REALLY easy, just don't over think them because you will waste time studying.
rate my professor is misleading. I took this course thinking that the professor is easy. I ended up dropping the class since his exams and quiz are too difficult. About half of the students also dropped. Highly not recommend.
His class by far has been one of the hardest classes I've taken.Pulled a B. Take notes during lecture and study the book as test and quizzes consist of both. Take good notes some stuff is from the lectures not the book. I love his class. I am happy to say i walked away with some pretty good knowledge :)!!!
Tran is an excellent teacher. He has a great sense of humor & will take the time to explain things that you don't understand. He curves A LOT. With minimal studying, you can end up with a B on your exams. Chatting it up with him is fun & helps with your grade (hint*hint). And don't be rude! NO ONE likes rude students.
Super nice and curves tests!!! Tests were really hard but with the curve I aced all of them! AND i learned a cr@p load of stuff..win win situation
He's really chill & down to earth. For 195(lab class): in-class lab one week (easy stuff, like ID-ing different plants/animals), then field trip the next week (incl Huddart, Edgewood, Pillar Point). Quiz almost every week on what you did the previous week. Final=long quiz & you can use your notebook. Very knowledgeable & approachable. Highly recomm
Lots of material but good teacher. Has a good sense of humor so it makes it easier to learn. Study a little everyday and you'll be fine. Don't expect to study the night before and get a good grade (with only one exception -.- ).
DON'T TAKE HIM. I attended all classes(and trips)did all the hw and quiz and got a C. I was surprised. Also, when he corrects the quiz he mumbles so not everybody can hear him and helps mostly biology major students. he does not care about all students.too much work and gas(for the trips) for a 1 unit lab course. can't stand him.
HORRIBLE! EVERYTHING HE SAYS TO STUDY IS ONLY PART OF WHAT IS ON THE TEST. HE THROWS CURVEBALLS AT YOU ON THE TEST AND HIS LECTURE DOES NOT HELP AT ALL. DO NOT TAKE. I SAY THIS AGAIN. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH TRAN
Good teacher, I learned a ton in his class. Getting a B is fairly easy, homework doesn't count for much, and his tests are pretty hard, but heavily curved. Just pay attention to everything he tells you to study before the tests, and study it, I crammed each time before tests, and ended up getting an A.
This class was amazing and easy. Attendance is mandatory and your grade is based on this a lot. But all we did was go on field trips! Professor Tran is very straight forward and is helpful but can be hard to approach at times. He just has one of those faces. The final is worth a lot but you get to use this notebook to help. Be ontop of the notebook
Definitely would not recommend taking this class with Tran. Lectures are extremely boring. During lab no one really knows whats going on because he doesn't explain anything. He tells you what to study for the test and then there are the most random questions...it's ridiculously difficult. Avoid if you can!!
He really knows how to teach. I just depended on his lectures and notes. If you''re good at multiple choice questions for tests it will be a breeze. But he grades HARD on the free response. There''s TONS of dissecting. He may seem harsh but he really cares . I learned a lot from this class because of him
He's really rude when answering questions for dissections. His study guides aren't helpful at all, as he doesn't seem to follow them really. He starts out the class scaring you rather than motivating you to learn. On the 1st day of class he encouraged students to drop the class, unless the class was required for their major. Don't take him.
I don't recommend taking his class cz his lectures are really boring! Moreover, his tests are extremely hard with random questions he didn't mention at all. You have to study by yourself since his slides do not help you a lot! Focus on the textbook! Though I got an A in his class(he curves grade for every test).
So far the hardest class I've ever taken. His lectures aren't so clear and he doesn't seem ready to teach at all. Always mumbles. Seems unapproachable during labs. His tests are really though, sometimes it's hard to expect what kind of questions he'll give since he doesn't exactly go by his study guide. He expects a lot from you.
His voice is quiet and dull. His lectures are so boring that even he seems bored. He jumps from topic to topic so fast that you don't get a chance to let it sink in, and he doesn't make any opportunities for questions, so if you're confused you're pretty much effed. Be prepared to be tested on things in the book that he did not go over in class.
Lectures are so dry that I feel like I'm making out with a 90 year old woman.
The homework explains the material better then him, the lectures he provides (which are extremely boring) and the HW don't level up with the exams. He just asks really detailed random questions within 4 chapters. Avoid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and he curves exams on some people not all. Ha, what a great professor.
His class is probably the most difficult class I've ever taken. You really have to read/study the chapters he assigns for exams or else you're screwed. He speeds through his lectures too quickly and almost expects you to remember everything. The exams are also really difficult if you don't study the book or his (poor) study guide. Wouldn't recomm.
You are on your own 95% of the time, even in labs. There is little guidance and only swift deadlines for assignments. You better have eidetic memory before taking this class because memorization of terms and materials is MANDATORY. You cannot take this class with ease it is IMPOSSIBLE. I was so lucky to drop this since it didn't apply to my major.
Hardest class ever. Lecture exams are ok if you study at least a week ahead. Lab exams were torture; so much memorization. Not very approachable, boring lectures, tough grader for essays. An A is possible if you don't cram, read/reread, start studying way ahead of exams, memorize dissections and use Google. Self-study basically, but a group works.
Proceed with caution. Tran is a nice human being, but as a teacher, he is insufferable. VERY unorganized. 210 is a 5 unit class, so there is a TON of material, but he does not do a good job of spacing it out. He crams 85% of the material in the last month and a half or so. Test questions are rarely from his study guide. Only pro: he curves heavily.
DON'T EVER TAKE THIS CLASS!
This class was awful. He makes you pay 100$ for this online hw system that has nothing to do with the class, no warning for hw. he doesnt reply to emails, very unapproachable. his exams are different from his lectures so good luck memorizing the whole book. doesnt post slides, posts 5 hw assignments 3 days before the exam. This class was ridiculous
Yes, this is a hard class. Want an A? Do the following: respect the class, DO NOT depend on lectures, you MUST read the book, write summaries of each chapter, for practicals, internet is your best friend, GO to his office hours, ASK questions, start studying at least 3 days prior to exams. Lastly, dissections are really fun; you learn A LOT. GL
The review below me has some solid advice. However, as long as you get your work done and aren't one of those idiots who doesn't know how to study, getting an A in this class is pretty easy due to the enormous curve. Don't get me wrong, I studied a lot for the tests, but its more about distinguishing when to study hard and when you have some slack.
There are some professors who should stay in their profession and there are those who clearly arent good at their job and should find another career. Tran is one of them. Ive taken many science classes for my major and he is the worst teacher Ive ever taken. Hes very unorganized HWs are assigned randomly no warning! Dont take this B
Tran is a really nice guy. He is a bit shy but has a definite passion for bio. Lectures can get a little boring sometimes but he does a good job of covering the material. Lab exams are tough. Be prepared to study after each lab so you don't have to cram a couple of days before the test. He really cares and loves to see his students succeed.
The lecture is disorganized or somewhat scripted (he always looks back to his computer with a long pause). If you have to take Zoology class, take it with someone other than Tran Huy or elsewhere. Unless, brace yourself to go through hell. The lecture is mainly the exam, plus other unmentioned stuff he says. Also if you have bad memory study ahead.
This is a great class but he is a difficult professor. Do not feel demoralized by low grades because he does help you out a little bit. However, this is a ver difficult class and you need to make sure you're prepared for hard work and a lot of reading. Exams and midterms are indeed difficult but just push through it and you will be fine.
Overall, Professor Tran does his job pretty well but its really easy to get off track in his class. You really have to go over material outside of class in order for you to keep up with lectures. His lectures can be boring but very interesting too so make sure youre wide awake for his morning class. Dont wait till the last minute to study either
Please designate time to teach yourself the material. Make sure you ask a ton of questions, the lab tests are brutally long and heavy. Take it elsewhere if you can. Class lectures don't prepare you for tests. Take pictures in lab and create/organize albums for the test prep and coursework. Slack off, you'll FAIL! Read every day, it will help.
Tran knows his stuff, but this is a hard class and hes not a nice guy. Lab exams are crazy hard, lecture are pretty hard too. Do your homework and hes not joking about spend 5+ hours a week studying this stuff. Labs are dissection so if youre squeamish its not gonna be fun.
Honestly Tran was a really good professor in my opinion. Yes the lectures can be a bit boring but if you take good notes and actually study like you're suppose to, than the class isn't really that tough. Alot of terminology that you have to remember but if you put in the time to study then you'll be fine. Study guides are clear so be prepared.
If you take Tran, STUDY THE MATERIAL BEFORE EVERY LAB SESSION! At the end of almost every lab you'll have a small quiz on the stuff you learned that day. It is hard to memorize everything just in one lab session, so come prepared. Also, be ready to teach yourself :/ Tran is a nice person, but was not the right prof for me personally.
Great teacher if you're just fulfilling your transfer requirement. I'm taking the field lab course and the field trips are really informational and pertain to a lot of what we discuss in class. Quizzes on last week's material at the beginning of every class. Answers questions thoughtfully but doesn't care to remember your name, which is fine.
From one human being to another make sure to avoid having him as a teacher. Essentially everyone gets c's and d's for every test, and from everyone's low grades, he curves the overall grade. Getting a question correct on a test means flawless spelling and 99% in his words. If there's one word he doesn't think fits the answer, or misspelled0credit
He's not a warm person and he rarely compromises. He gives out study guides for each chapter which are only somewhat helpful. Expect to do a lot of studying outside of class and pretty randomly assigned online homework. The tests seemed to be curved heavily-- on the lab tests I left several answers blank but still ended up with A's on most of them.
This is one of those classes that'll give you a stroke. Like not even joking this is probably the hardest class I have ever taken in my life. The exams are 75% of your grade and EXTREMELY hard. If you don't answer the free response in his words, expect 0 points. Homework is online and tedious. Lecture heavy and boring. Cool tarantula tho.
Professor Tran loves what he does. He's very passionate and knowledgeable but he is not cut off to be a professor. Unfortunately, he's the only zoo professor at all 3 colleges. He's a very tough grader, since he wants you to say the stuff with his words. If you wanna pass, take good notes, read the book and keep in mind the homework. Lab is fun tho
Tran was the worst professor ive ever had. He mumbles during lectures so its hard to hear but that doesnt even matter. Spent 6 hours on a study guide for each test and still failed all of them. Hes also a bit rude. Hes unorganized and the finals are EXTREMELY difficult. I would rather drop out than take him again. ive never failed before him.
Like many people have said, he's not a great lecturer. The only reason I'm doing well in this class so far is because I took AP Bio in high school, and about 70% or more of the material in this class overlapped with that. He curves exams pretty heavily. A 65% on our first lecture exam ended up being worth an A, so there's that.
Absolutely terrible. Gives exams back a month later, study guides aren't useful at all and he just reads off of the lecture slides yet somehow still misses stuff. You never know your grade and hes unclear about everything he expects. Tests are curved but you never really can catch a break or really figure out what he wants.
He's deadass the worst teacher I've ever taken, like the way he teaches is the worst. Don't take him, but you have to since he's the only zoology teacher is all 3 campuses. You don't have to show up to lecture because they're so boring and he doesn't grade attendance. Tip: Just work on the study guides he gives and read the book and it should be ok
class itself is a lot of work, but that's to be expected given the content. he's boring, just lectures to the class off of slides. grade is mostly dependent on exams: 4 lecture exams and 3 lab exams. tough grader with multiple choice and short answer. you never know your grade in the class, b/c he takes months to grade (yes, months) and update
Prof Tran is probably the absolute worst teacher one could experience. I would not recommend his class to anyone. His tests are purely based off of his words so if you answer a question in your own words, count on failing the test. He does not care about how hard the course is and takes pride in the fact that his class is a living hell.
This zoology class was one of the worst experiences I have ever had with a teacher. This was online this semester but you barley meet for zoom. All work is done outside of class and be ready to teach yourself everything. Your grade is based off of the lecture exams which he doesn't even grade. If I knew my grade soon I would've dropped this class.
This class online was a nightmare. Professor Tran has the class set up in a fast paced module after module course. Exams are split by lecture and lab exams, and you are expected to be doing lab modules while studying for lecture exams, vice versa. He recommends studying 2-3x a day everyday for 30 minutes each. Don't take if you have a life.
it is super unfortunate that this class has to be mandatory for me. He isnt nice, very blunt. Does not grade anything. Makes you study for two different exams at the same time. Use the book it is much better than his lectures. You must study everyday. These issues date back to 2005, come on csm theres been enough complaints about this guy.
Literally do not take this class if you want to maintain your GPA. I know some bio majors who had trouble with this introductory course. This professor was such an issue a me and a group of students had to contact the dean. Additionally, he informed us that the highest student in the class had an 88% .
I will be honest, this is one of the most caring Professor. His class is very hard for students who tend to be lazy in reading and studying for exams. His exams are difficult but studying the study guide will help a lot. He also curves exams heavy. If you are struggling just email him and he is always there to help you succeed. One of the best!!
This is the worst class at CSM I have taken, and I had no other options. He is the only 210 teacher at all 3 campuses. This class would not be difficult if it weren't for his lack of effort and enthusiasm. He avoids questions and doesn't know anyone's name. If the class was run better, the information would be engaging and easily learned/retained.
Professor Tran is a nice guy and you can tell that he knows what he is talking about, but his class is just not good. It's unclear what you're supposed to know for the exams, which are 80% of your grade, and there are basically no assignments to help you learn the material. Do not take this class if you can help it, but good luck if you have to.
Honestly, this class isn't as difficult as the reviews make it seem. Biology is a difficult course in general, so going to office hours makes this course significantly easier. Tests are extensive but you don't need anything outside of the lectures and study guides; they cover everything. Be prepared to work but Professor Tran was a pleasure to take
I got an A in the class but it was very tough to get. I had issues with him pushing out a single grade when the semester was already halfway through. I emailed him twice about grades and he never responded. The labs were easy but the class is weighed heavily on exams and quizzes. He does curve exams which is the only way I got an A in the class.
Biology 210 is a tough class with so much materials to read and lots of works to do. The exams are really hard but he curves the exams very heavily and that was the only reason I could get an A. It takes a lot of time for him to grade exams and quizzes. Labs are easy and he is very generous for grading lab assignments.
Difficult class, not because of subject matter as he thinks but because of his teaching style which I found scattered. Only engagement with students in class was walking around the lab to check dissections. Didn't grade anything for most of the semester so impossible to tell how you're doing. Test-heavy grading, labs count for very little.
Professor Tran is super nice and accommodating. However, he reads of the slides in his lecture and doesn't give clear directions to what is on the exam. You have to get the answer he wants or he will mark you incorrectly. He also just expects you to know what to do in lab without giving any clear directions.
I don't get all the negative reviews, yet I enjoy taking Professor Tran's Anatomy class. He is a decent and considerate professor! Knowing that it is Human Anatomy, there is a lot of material to learn, but when it comes to lab exams, he provides study resources and even practice tests to help students.
Very difficult course because of the professor's teaching style, hard to learn. Labs are not graded and there is no instruction on how to preform the labs. Tests are the major contributors to your grade and they are graded very harshly, the grades are not input till the last weeks of the course.
This is truly a SCIENCE class. Prof. Tran covers more zoology than you ever knew existed but it's fascinating and compelling if you're into the Biological Sciences. If you're not, then don't put yourself through this course. Great effort is required to get a passing grade and several students in my class had failed it before; sometimes twice :)
Professor Tran was by far the worst professor I've ever had. He expects you to learn everything on your own and won't help even if you ask. In his lectures he jumps all over the place and he would just read off of a textbook. His exams are nothing like the study guide. Don't take his class if you don't want to fail or repeat the class!!!!!
I throughly enjoyed the lectures and labs but the test were extremely difficult. He curves every test and drops your lowest grades on both the lab and lecture exams. Class was very manageable. As long as you study and try you should be fine!
Most of the people in this class were struggling and a good amount were retaking it because he's so hard. He grades very late so you can't get the best idea of where you're at. Little to no instruction on labs. I think he's great at bio but unless you're good at bio and memorization it's going to be a lot of work.
Very hard to get to, very unprofessional. Hard to get to and hard to understand the lectures.
Straight forward class, a lot of learning by yourself. Exams are curved and allows for up to 5% extra credit if you do really well on exams. Wish there was a lot more support in identifying structures, but if you do your due diligence you can figure it out.
He basically reads off the slides, he knows a lot about the subject but doesn't really know how to pass that on to the students. Grade everything so late, so it makes it very hard to know where you're at in the class.
Honestly dont take him, he is very rude and questions students ability to learn based on them asking basic questions? I have never met such a rude professor, you have a better chance of taking this class at Canada with Hirzel or Lee. Do not take unless you want to end up failing or withdrawing. Let this be a warning
Genuinely cares abt his students & stays after lab to answer questions/review dissections. Class is lecture-heavy with few minor assignments, so not much work aside from intense exam studying. There are 4 lab and 4 lecture exams, with the lowest of each dropped. Lecture exams are tough, so aim for extra credit on lab exams to boost your score.
Unfortunately this is the only professor for Zoology. Lectures are scattered and do not prepare you for the tests. When I asked a question the professor told me it was covered in the study guide. Study guide took hours to complete. Labs cover a huge amount of material with little instruction by the professor. Heavily curved.
Made it 13 weeks, but am dropping. Exams are very difficult, the main issue is that they make up like 95% of your grade. If your not a good test taker youre kinda screwed. He is also late to everything showed up to our lab exam 35 minutes late which idk maybe I'm too judgy but thats not great. Tons of dissections that make no sense, slowwww grader
Tran is NOT a good professor. Very knowledgeable on the topic but not a good teacher. If you're not a big test taker then DON'T take this class!! We only had one homework assignment the whole year even though the syllabus says otherwise. No retakes or extra credit to make up points lost on tests :(
Absolute worst. Luckily I changed majors and could withdraw from this class and even changed schools but bro left me with a traumatic experience. Take this class if you enjoy being tortured. Very little guidance, basically constant studying, at the very least the tests were not always super difficult but only if you study extremely hard.
For starters the class description was Wildlife Biology study North American wildlife. We may have talked less than 5% of that. He was always a minimum 5 minutes late for class, then another 5+ minutes for him to get his lecture together. I do not recommend him. I am limited space so cannot write a thorough review
