Bro Lewis is a very good teacher. I learned so much from him and was always anxious to come to his class, however you do have to participate because it is 1/3 of your grade. If you do the reading before class you'll be fine!
What an amazing Professor!!! I learned so much about the gospel and the Book of Mormon. It is important to attend class, read the material, and participate in class. It is worth it!

At first he wasn't my favorite teacher but he definitely grew on me. I've never met a person who knew his stuff more than he does. My class could ask him anything. The class is basically straight forward. Do your reading (which isn't too much) and take minie quizzes. I would recommend him...he really teaches you a lot about church history.
Was excited about subject.
Church History was great. He knows his stuff. Good class discussion. Straight forward. Show up, pay attention, and do your reading and you will be fine. You might even gain a better appreciation for Joseph Smith, a greater understanding of the gospel, and increase your testimony of Christ why your at it.
He was too controlling
Best History teacher I have ever had! Very passionate about what he teaches and knows a lot about it! I used to hate history class but now I really like it! If you study for his test you will be fine, but make sure you study! I actually looked forward to attending his class, it was never boring!
It's hard to take notes in the class because he makes it so interesting that you focus on the stories and content that you forget to take notes! Tests are a bit of a challenge but the class is fun.
He has a different teaching style, but I liked it alot and worked very well for me. He doesn't use a textbook, he gives you topics you have to research prior to class instead. Knows his stuff, makes it very intersting. Tests would only be hard if you don't study - soo study and you'll be fine
He really knows his stuff and brings excitement with the lesson. Makes it interesting. I am starting to like history now. Strict and sometimes doesn't seem like he cares about your grade; it's up to you to do the readings, take extensive notes and study hard for the tests. All in all, a great teacher.
Great professor. Pay attention, take notes and this will be the best class. It is for me
Great professor! He shows that he really wants to be there teaching, it isn't just a job. He is fun to listen to and great to learn from.
Brother Lewis is Amazing! His enthusiasm for the class is contagious and I always left class excited for the next lesson. Just come in, take Really good notes and pay attention. You don't have to tak if you don't want. The only homework is to have a journal entry every 2 weeks. Only 2 exams and those are tough. I highly recommend the class! :D
Hyrum Lewis is the greatest teacher I have ever had. He is so passionate about what he does it makes me want to teach what he is teaching. I am not a big fan of studying American History or worldwide cultural traits, but I ended up liking it. His attendance policy and exams are killer, but taking good notes during lectures will save you!
He was great! The class was so easy (granted I was a Junior taking a Freshman Foundations class), but it was a great class. The lectures can get kind of long but as long as you listen in class I barely studied over my notes for the test and got over 100 percent on the mid term and final because he curves it. Fun and easy class and I learned a lot!
I loved his American Foundations class and I am planning on taking other classes that he teaches in the future. He has a great sense of humor and is full of energy in every class that you can't help but listen to what he has to say. readings can be a bit tedious at times, but his class is so worth it.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING teacher!!! I don't usually like lectures but he puts so much passion into it that I always looked forward to going to class. Also, I've never liked economics, but I ended up loving it because of the way he teaches it. Do the reading because you're graded by your peers during small group discussion. Take his classes!!
THIS GUY IS THE MAN
TAKE THIS TEACHER- it will be the smartest thing you will do! You will love the class, and Brother Lewis' energy and passioin for the subject radiate from him! He is so smart, and really wants you to be better then you are. This was my favorite class, and i loved it the whole way through. He is so knowledgable and is the best professor here!
I am amazed at the passion that Hyrum Lewis had from Day 1 till the final. He deeply cares about the material and wants you to understand it. Don't take his class if you don't like to participate in class because you will lose some points. The tests can be hard if you dont take good notes but he curves them so it all works out in the end.
Greatest class I ever took in the History Department, I learned so much. I love the style of teaching and he makes you learn outside of class. He is the best teacher in the History department. Hands down!
I loved this teacher! I figured i'd sleep everyday, but the lectures are WAY too interesting. Class participation required, but he doesn't make you feel silly for asking questions and he gets so excited about what he's teaching; it's funny! (take really good notes, they're essential for tests) I would take a class from him again in a heartbeat!
I feel like this professor uses theatrics and drama and not intellectual stimulation. You must write a paper for each class and only 5 papers are ever graded. You don't get feedback and it's just busy work. However, he teaches cohesively and the tests are easy. Bring gum to class though, you might fall asleep!
My favorite class the whole semester. I didn't even mind getting up at 8 to go to his class every morning.
This one one of the easiest classes to stay awake in. Don't know how the other dude was falling asleep. I rhink it's entertaining, plus it's a little hard when someone is talking really loud. This professor makes class interesting each discussion.
This is an awesome class! Brother Lewis knows how to teach normally boring information and capture your attention. Homework isn't too much, dont even have to do any projects, pretty easy tests. Take american foundations from him!
I love this class! Brother Lewis is so interesting and work is very easy, not even any projects or papers to do! He makes normally boring subjects very interesting. Tests aren't that hard either.
He is the best teacher I've ever had. His passion moves you to be a better person and have greater love for the subject matter. He taught the best class I've ever had and possibly changed my life.
super smart dude
Great teacher. He knows his stuff and knows how to teach it. He does get a little intense sometimes, but it does keep things interesting. If you study, the tests are very very fair. The homework given is interesting, just make sure to do it, he calls on people randomly to give answers from it. This is a good professor to take.
He gets his point across. Even so, it made me uncomfortable the whole time to hear him shout every single word, in his lectures. Homework is essentially trial-and-error, to be determined at class time.
Amazing!! Very clear, funny, keeps attention. loved this class!
What am amazing class! This was my favorite class last semester! I would recommend Brother Lewis again and again! Passionate, BRILLIANT, and just a really a great teacher!!!
THE BEST american foundations teacher, easy. He is so amazing at teaching, he is pretty much born to teach. I've never seen such a passionate professor about the subject matter they teach. I've decided to minor in Political Science because of his class.
Bro. Lewis is Awesome. One page paper due each time. Do the work and be prepared and you will do great. This guy knows his stuff. Take from him.
He is honestly the smartest history I have ever listened to. His tests are harder, but the class is very interesting.
Awesome guy. Best history class I've ever taken and probably will take. He is the only person you should take it from. He's passionate and that's the most important thing in a professor.
He's a freakin amazing teacher, all of his discussions are extremely interesting and he teaches very well. Do all the assignments, pay attention in class(which isn't too hard) and study the notes for tests and you'll get an A.
It was hard to comprehend and stay awake in the class. Sometime the test had stuff on it that we not even in the notes. It was difficult to know what to study for.
He was a good teacher. Very enthusiastic about what he taught and kept it interesting. He raised his voice a few times when he would get excited, but it was entertaining more than anything. His class was easy if you paid attention and took notes. Participation is very important in this class.
You will do well in his class if you have good attendance so you can show up for class and participate and take notes because the slides he gives you to help prepare for tests will not help you prepare because most of the things covered in class are not on the slides and those things not on the slides will make up the test. He is a nice guy
Brother Lewis is awesome! He explains things very well, and he's very passionate with his teachings! He challenges the students to think more, I love it! Definately take his class! Its not necessarily the easiest, but it is the most rewarding!
This was my favorite class the whole semester and I really dislike history. This professor loved what he taught so much that I actually began to like it. Easy class if your willing to take notes and study them. Love this professor!
Bro. Lewis has a great sense of humor and his course load is really quite easy.
Bro Lewis is my favorite teacher ever. Any comment left about notes that are not on tests is wrong. The tests follow very much with slides but study them well. He does not have study guide. His class is so rewarding you will not regret it. He loves what he teaches and really wants all in the class to come out with a better understanding!A+ Teacher
One of the most influential teachers I've ever had. His class changed a lot about how I approach academics and life. The class requires tremendous effort, but that's because it's a demanding class, not because he is unreasonable. If you honestly try what he tells you to and are humble enough to learn, it's extremely rewarding. My personal Yoda!
Amazing!! Uses powerpoints a lot, but makes sure it's easy to understand. Uses study groups so we're not alone. Not strict on grades, uses curve, and is very understanding. I loved him and would take him again if he taught the classes I take.
To start, I do not like history- Brother Lewis attempted to make class interesting, though I would dose off each class. He uses powerpoints every lesson. If you don't take notes, good luck. His test's are tricky and a bit confusing. Attendance is demanded. He lectures the entire class. Homework is difficult, and is due each time class meets.
AWESOME TEACHER. Very excited and passionate about his Job. Learned tons from this class and got a good grade fairly easily. Definitely recommend taking Foundations from Him. just make sure to attend class and take good notes.
Excited about the subject he is teaching, and passes that to the student, really makes history come alive. A little intimidating but a great teacher. Test and homework are hard and a lot of work but there are curves and lots of assignments to help your grade. Go to class, take good notes, and participate.
He's really awesome. Grades fair, teaches with passion, makes history interesting.
I had him for American Foundations 101. He definitely wasn't an easy teacher, but I learned tons! He required a short page paper every day on the readings, and takes attendance by having a seating chart and requiring participation. The class was more about the philosophy behind historical events rather than the events themselves. Awesome teacher!!
Tough tests! he asks some ridicuous questions on them and you have to study a ton to do well on them. the class is fun and he makes you feel involved, but when all he grades on is 3 tests and 3 papers, you end up with a crap grade
I LOVE BRO LEWIS! you need to study a bit but i found it all interesting. There are 3 two page papers due. and only 3 tests. you are graded on that and participation is 20% of your grade. there is reading and questions for homework. in class he will randomly call on people to answer the questions from the reading. he makes class lectures enjoyable
Bro. Lewis is a phenomenal teacher. I hated American History in HS, but now I love it. One of the most rewarding classes. Attend class, take notes, do the homework, and study, it will guarantee you the A grade. I fell in love with history. He is super passionate and knows what he's talking about. Never be afraid to voice your opinion, he enjoys it.
Brother Lewis is a BRILLIANT teacher. It's my 3rd semester at the school, and it's the first time I feel like I am in an actual college course. Preparation and attendance is key. For me, preparing wasn't a hassle- all of the assigned readings were super interesting. Attendance wasn't an issue for me, coming to class was treat. TAKE THIS CLASS.
Brother Lewis is a very interesting and smart teacher. I was always captivated. You need to prepare and do the readings. You can't slide by in this class. Participation is mandatory.
I feel so inspired whenever I sit in his class. He's brilliant and knows his stuff better then any teach I've seen. Great Public Speaker and knows how to poke your brain to get you to think about how you feel about a topic verses only his option on a political matter.
Brother Lewis is the bomb! He is one of the smartest men I have ever met. He teaches in such a captivating way that allows students to understand and apply concepts in life.
He is a rad teacher! I learned so much! He is really strict and you have to do your work, but I really enjoyed every class.
I really enjoyed his class! I love how he didn't just grade on tests but he had you write papers as well. He is really insightful, smart and helpful. And he thinks textbooks are immoral! :) Fantastic teacher!
History 300 is a tough class and I have not yet finished, but I know that Brother Lewis was the best history professor I have had. If you fail it was because you did not put the time into your final paper. He always answers emails and is willing to help you succeed.
if you are ok getting a D in a class while trying hard... take it from him he's your man.
Great class, but professor has a bad attitude and makes the class harder than it should be. This is a level 100 mandatory history class not a 300 level Chemistry class. If you love history, I hope this professor doesn't ruin that for you...
Brother Lewis is a awesome teacher!! He is extremely clear, and will tell you exactly what to do. Follow the instructions EXACTLY. The Syllabus is your bible. He will help you all he can if you ask. The biggest key to this class is not procrastinating. Listen to Brother Lewis he will give you the answers but will make you work for them.
HE is a hard professor that doesn't care about his students. he has a bad attitude and no desire to help his students pass or learn
He is a great professor! He may be very strict, but if you follow what he says and don't procrastinate you will love his class. He paints the picture very clearly: come prepared, you'll do well. Don't come prepared, you'll do poorly.
I had Brother Lewis for American Foundations, and while I thought he was a great teacher, I had this class as a hybrid and it was horrible! If you can take him for lecture I would, but definitely not hybrid, it was very difficult and stressful.
This semester I was in a hybrid class which we met once a week. This class was horrible as well as the instructor most of the time. As a class we had to ask him to actually teach the class. He does know a lot and is competent but he is not a very good teacher. He is very short and not very helpful. I will not take a class from him ever!
My class was a hybrid. He gives alooot of readings, and sometimes long videos, that are as long as movies. Every week, we had to take a "Quest" at the testing center BEFORE he went over the material in class, it was so stressing. The study guides did not help at all with the Quests. I would not reccomend him.
Bro. Lewis was intimidating at first. There seemed to be a tinge of attitude in his emails, which made me anxious to approach him if I had a problem. But without fail, each time I approached him he was happy to help. My class was a hybrid which was difficult but in the end he helped us out MAJORLY. Prepare each week sufficiently and you'll do fine.
Very intimidating and hard to work with. Like many have said before, I had him for the hybrid class and while I did well, it was way more difficult and busy than it needed to be. Lots of group work and online videos, not enough lecturing. TONS of quizzes and tests too. Wouldn't recommend him.
Brother Lewis is a fantastic teacher! He's strict and no-nonsense and moves at a very fast pace, but I think that's refreshing. His classes have a lot of material to learn, but his lectures will always have you engaged and interested and the busy work is minimal. It's all on you, and you won't regret taking this class if you work hard for it.
Sadly to say I did not like his class....not because of the class but because it was just very boring. Every class we would just go over powerpoint after powerpoint...so if you wish to take his class make sure you take notes. I fell asleep almost everyday because of how boring and monotoned it was...but its all good!
Brother Lewis is a great teacher, he is very knowledgeable and he helps you think. I took a hybrid American Foundations from him. If you take his class you will soon find out that Brother Lewis is very fair and that you have to work for your grade. Sometimes is challenging, but I recommend it. You can learn a lot in his class.
He knows a lot and is good at lecturing, but when it comes to actually caring about students and wanting them to do well, he doesn't care at all.
This is my least favorite class because I took it as a hybrid. The material is overbearing sometimes but I feel that's more of the class than the teacher. He moves very fast and if you don't prepare for the class you will fail. Start the first day of class as if its life or death... Be prepared and you'll be fine.
very hard teacher if you do not study 7-8 hours per week. He makes you study more in depth. A lot of question on test will be questions covered in class and in the reading, not in the review questions. Makes sure everything is studied, do not focus on just one thing. He is a very exciting teacher though and he makes you want to learn more.
Best teacher I have ever had! Got the class excited and inspired me.
I took the hybrid course and it was a lot of work. You definitely have to go through the material throughout the week and not just on the quiz day. His lectures are pretty dang amazing. I learned so much from this class. He goes through the quizzes every week and curved every test. His grading is very fair and don't expect any sympathy.
I really enjoyed this class. As long as you participate and put in the work (minimum of 7 hours a week) then you'll do well and learn a ton. Highly recomend
His class was the most difficult foundation class I have ever taken. It was the most rewarding class from my first semester. Heads up! you will easily fail the class if you slack off. He has a lot of readings/videos to go through so don't fall behind. In the end his class is hard but well worth taking if you want to learn about history.
This course is too much work for a foundations class. The professor does not care about students grades. If you fail he does not care. Do not take this class from this professor.
This is the class I've learned the most from this semester, but he does come across as a bit intimidating and overexcited. I suppose he's a pretty good teacher overall.
Genius of a professor - I learned the more from this class than any other. You have to study a lot to do well but it's worth it. Every lecture is freaking amazing and ties history, politics, culture and econ into life in a way that makes you see the world in a new light. TAKE THIS CLASS - it'll change your life.
Lewis is incredible. Like AMAZING! I have never learned so much much in a class before. He is motivating, interesting, and I never got bored in his class. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't the easiest class I have taken, but he pushed me to my limits and it made me better! I would dare say that he is the best professor iv'e ever had and on this campus.
Brother Lewis is a great teacher! He can be super hard if you do not go over the assigned material before class. I had him in a hybrid class. He was very enthusiastic about the subject material and made things very interesting.
All I can say is, beware. There is a ridiculous amount of reading, and he expects a minimum of 7 hours a week. His test/quizzes are insanely difficult if you don't remember every little detail. He is passionate about history, but could care less about his students. His expectations are unfair and unrealistic. I immensely regret taking this class.
Hybrid class, He is super hard on you, he expects 7 hours at minimum to be spent ing and reading....He assigns that much busy work. miss more then 2 classes, and its an automatic fail. Doesn't look at his student when he talks, seems like he like to hear his own voice. Test are ridiculously hard. I highly don't recommend taking this.
This class was a hard class for me. There is a no technology excuse policy. I understand the policy, but it gets a little crazy in my opinion. Some of the assignments arent that clear and when asking for help, well, you just dont get that much help. I know there were others in the class that enjoyed it, but I wouldnt go back and take this class.
In a nutshell: You're hw is to study key terms and create your own flashcards to share with an assigned group and to be ready to respond if he cold calls on you. Together with your group you write a textbook based on the key terms you study each class period. You have to work hard on knowing the terms and always be ready to share to get an A.
I LOVED THIS CLASS!
Hyrum Lewis is one of the best professors I have had at BYU-Idaho. His class was difficult and you definitely have to put in the time, but I learned more than almost any other history class I have taken. He is exceptional, passionate, and KNOWS the content. You will not waste any time in his class. Well worth the time and effort!
It's a tough class, but it's really rewarding. The lectures are fast-paced, and you'll need to take a quiz on time every week, but you will learn a TON. At the beginning, he promises you that you'll get an 'A' grade if you devote 6 hoursweek to studying. IT'S TRUE!!! I recommend his class! He's available to help when you need it.
This class requires the expected college-level effort to pass, but it's easy if you work on it daily. He's a fan of group projects, so be sure to put forth effort there and it will pay off. Pay attention to grading criteria--he's very specific. He's a top-notch teacher. He can make you excited to learn about the dumbest little things in history.
Best teacher I've ever had hands down. He cares about his students and is passionate about history. Yes, he expects you to work, but you will learn a ton and you will actually love the material. It basically comes down to this: if you don't care about school and aren't willing to work, get into a different class. Vice versa also holds true.
You will work! He doesn't give you busy work. Everything is relevant and helpful. He is super strict on food and technology during lectures. Be there and be ready to be inspired. He gives fabulous lectures that work with the homework as a foundation. You don't do the homework, you're oblivious. Great professor :)
Brother Lewis' lectures are AMAZING. I felt the Holy Ghost very powerfully as he taught. Tests are tough, lot of reading, three group papers. If you're diligent you'll get an A. The papers very much require someone to step up as a leader to make sure it gets done. Class is required, so DEFINITELY take it from Brother Lewis. Some got over 100%.
Brother Lewis might possibly be the best teacher I have ever had. He's an absolute genius and incredibly knowledgeable, but teaches in a way that anybody can understand. His lectures are amazing which I never thought I would ever say about any lecture. There are not enough good words for this teacher. Hyrum Lewis 2016!
Group Projects sucked. When I went to him a few times for help, I received none. He is passionate about history but could care less about the success of his students. Quizzes & Exams are ridiculous. His TA was not helpful in anyway, every time I went to the TA's exam review session, I left with less knowledge than I came in with. Take FDCIV101!!
The best teacher I have ever had. The class is straight forward, you know his expectations from the start. He definitely knows his stuff. Take this class, you will not regret it!
Oh I could go on and on about Bro Lewis! lol He was a lecture teacher for sure. I can't retain info when its just being repeated to me from a slideshow. His tests were way hard and so were the online quizzes. I took a hybrid class so it was a lot of outside reading! And we had 3 group papers to write. Don't opt out of the groups! They saved my butt
Bro. Lewis knows his stuff which makes for some really incredible lectures. I learned more in his class than any other I have taken. The class is tough and you will have to work hard to get a good grade but you'll be so glad you did.
I'm not exaggerating when I say he changed my life. His tests aren't easy- but if you put in the work you can pass no problem. He's a talented lecturer and knows so much about history. You will never have to wonder what he expects. I recommend him especially to those who are PoliSci majors. If history/gov doesn't interest you, take someone else.
Brother Lewis is the best teacher I have ever had. I left his class empowered to learn things for myself. He looked at charts and spectrums (like "nature vs. nurture") and showed the higher way of thinking of them. You will learn a lot about agency in his class. I will keep the textbook he wrote forever. You will learn all about writing, too!
I hate to generalize, but anyone who didn't like this class is lazy and/or angry that Brother Lewis makes you learn for an A. Hands down best teacher I've ever had, no exaggeration. He's passionate, an absolute genius, and if you follow the way he has set up the course, you will get an A. I didn't even care for history and finished w over 100%.
Brother Lewis is a great teacher but he is crazy. He is so strict I feel like im in kindergarten. You leave to go to the bathroom during class he marks it as a tardy and so many tardy counts and an absence and so many absences docks your grade. I mean he is a good teacher and passionate about what he does but is it worth his craziness? not sure.
Somewhat confused by the rave reviews Brother Lewis has gotten. Yes, hes a good professor who knows his stuff. But hes so strict and lecture heavy that it takes away from the class. Asking a question feels like youre wasting his time. No electronics, no speaking in class, straight lecture. Wouldnt recommend - unless you cant find anyone better
Brother Lewis is an amazing instructor and he has tons of knowledge to share and youll learn a ton with him. But hes a tough grader and very specific and particular on students behavior. So, if youre not disciplined, dont take him!
Brother Lewis is the extremes of the spectrum! Hes funny, energetic, passsionate about what he teaches and his lectures are stellar! But he is incredibly strict with his grading, his students behavior (ie no electronics in class) and doesnt help too much with his assignments but his tests arent too bad and if you study, youll pass.
He's very passionate about what he teaches and I learned a lot. Made it worth it for me. Tests are difficult, take LOTS of notes and study them. He's not flexible so do not expect any mercy from him. A lot of homework. None was busywork though, it helped me prepare for class. If you are not willing to put in a lot of effort, do not take this class.
Bro. Lewis is awesome! Don't expect to get an A if you don't put any effort. Participation matters in his class, he takes notes of whoever participates. The prep material can be time consuming (I took a hybrid course), but it is totally worth it. You only have 3 exams and 3 papers due in his class.
An amazing teacher, you learn loads in his class. Everyday he does pop teaching, (randomly calls on two students to teach the class that day's material for five minutes) There's no textbook, you just have to research on your own, only 4 tests and 2 papers. Very passionate lectures, but you get marked down missing class, late, or leave for 5 mins.
He really know his content and I feel like a learn a lot, however I had the hardest time with his tests. He gives us review questions, but I never felt like they were actually on the test. They're comprehensive, which is fine, but I take at least 2 pages of notes every class period, it was a lot to study. Also felt like I couldnt ask for help.
He is a good teacher, he gave good lectures, but he has a zero tolerance policy for tardiness. You will not be allowed to turn in late assignments. If you ask to turn something in late the answer will be no and he will dock participation points for asking. If your good with deadlines and being ontime he is great, if you arent DON'T RISK IT!!!
While you certainly have to put forth immense effort and discipline, his teaching style is fantastic and provides for much learning. Hes a really great historian!
Bro. Lewis gave amazing lectures that I wish were recorded so I can show them to other people who enjoy this topic. Honestly just do the work. Do not try to skip any of the readings or videos, do the discussion boards, they are easy points that will help you in the end.
I tried to give Brother Lewis a shot, but if you have an option... DO NOT take him. He wrote the textbook used in class, therefore he expects students to understand it perfectly. His lectures are super difficult to follow. There is no prep for the test, its basically I hope you paid attention and wrote down everything. The work load is CRAZY!!!
Bro. Lewis is very knowledgeable about what he teaches. However, he treats you like you are in high school. Super strict on attendance, participating in class, wants you to understand everything the first time, and adhere to his opinions. I loved his book, but honestly, don't take him if you have a choice. He makes it way harder than it needs to be
Simply do not take him. His feedback on papers and assignments is harsh, vicious, and in no way offers constructive feedback. His classes are pointless; it's just him talking the whole time and running through his power point quicker than you can take notes. Very disappointed with his class.
He definitely makes you work for your grade. But I learned SO much in the class. His assignments are meaningful and his textbook is fantastic. He is an amazing speaker and he is so knowledgeable about everything! I loved this class and this professor! If you want to actually learn something of eternal value in americanfoundations take it from him.
Brother Lewis is a great teacher. He makes you work for your grade though. He grades everything fairly and if you do what you are told and are responsible you will do great. He can come off as arrogant at first but he grows on you and is actually a very good lecturer. Be responsible and don't slack off if you do DON'T make excuses just own it!
Bro. Lewis is smart as a whip. He has high expectations for the class, but will give an A when an A is earned. The students that don't care for him are the ones that want to be spoon-fed an A. I have dreamed of studying at a prestigious university and while in his class I felt that I was receiving that kind of education. He's very inspirational.
This will by far be one of the hardest foundation class you will ever take! This class is very lecture heavy as well as homework heavy. There is a text book however the quiz ask questions that the book has very little information on. You are also required to watch a two hour video as well. So good luck with that! I dont recommend taking this class!
Brother Lewis wrote the text book for the class and he did a VERY great job. It will teach and inspire you to be more patriotic and to see the miracles God gave this country, though it has history in it, the book is not a history lesson. He also teaches you to be a skilled writer. His Lectures are Amazing and completely changed my way of thinking.
He is a life changing professor. He is very passionate about what he teaches and wants everyone to learn. He will push his classes to think for themselves and learn to speak up and if you do the assignments before class you will be just fine. I highly recommend taking a class from him. He is very intelligent and that allows him to be able to teach.
Brother Lewis is a solid choice for any history classes. He is strict and has his expectations set, but do your work and attend class and you will do fine. He doesn't give out easy A's but I learned a lot in this class about how to write and study history better. He's a touch grader and doesn't coddle his students, but all around good professor.
If you get nervous talking in front of people Brother Lewis's class is not for you. He does "pop teaching" moments every class where he randomly picks a student to give a five minute presentation about an assigned topic. His tests are very straightforward and if you study and take good notes you'll do well. He is a strict grader but good guy.
Hyrum Lewis is the single most influential teacher I have ever met. His lectures are always engaging and you will never leave class without feeling inspired and ready to take on anything! However, BEWARE FRESHMEN WILL STRUGGLE. Hyrum takes what is an easy class and pushes you harder than his own agenda. If you want an A stay far away from him.
READ THIS IF YOURE CONSIDERING TAKING HIS AMERICAN FOUNDATIONS CLASS: Brother Lewis is the best teacher Ive ever had. He is also the hardest. If you want an easy A, this isnt the class for you. However, if you actually want to learn something with your tuition money, take this class. Favorite class of all time, right here.
Brother Lewis is my favorite professor that I have had so far! There are 3 cycles, that include only 3 tests and 3 papers. He makes his rules and expectations very clear, and emphasizes that you follow instructions. I loved his lectures, they were inspiring and insightful! If you love U.S. history and are dedicated to learning, you will do fine!
Bro. Lewis is an amazing lecturer. He is incredibly intelligent and since he wrote the textbook, his lectures follow the text exactly. I don't suggest taking the class half online, the online classes were a lot of busy work that didn't help on tests or assignments. Still, an amazing teacher and really cool guy.
Brother Lewis is a very inspiring professor. He has a strong passion for what he teaches, and his teaching has even inspired me to switch my major. He does a great job incorporating the gospel to each lesson. He's a tough grader and has high expectations, but it's all to help make you a better college student.
You should be grown up enough to show up for class, no issue there. If you're an international student, don't take a class from him. I get it, you're proud to be American, the USA is God's nation (apparently), and yeah, Mao's China was awful (to say the least), but take a chill pill. His "passion" makes supply and demand sound like ideology...
It is a hard class, but you learn a lot.
Bro. L is a gem! He has very clear and high expectations for his students so he can sometimes come off as intense, but he cares a lot about them too. If your one to skip class then pick a different professor. He doesn't take excuses. He knows his stuff and is very passionate about what he teaches. To my surprise his class ended up being a favorite.
It's tricky, I love how passionate and lively this guy's lectures are, if it wasn't for how unfair and ridiculous his grading methods are.:( A lot of work with little payoff. Very prideful and convoluted. You memorize his interpretation of history down to the bullet point to succeed. Harder than my 300 level classes combined. Shouldn't be the case
Brother Lewis is a phenomenal teacher. People made his class out to be a crazy hard class but it isn't. Just stay up to date on assignments, go to every class, take notes and you'll be fine. He speaks with a lot of conviction and it turned out to be one of my all-time favorite teacher. The things I learned in that class I can take with me forever
Brother Lewis is a very intense teacher. If you want to mess around, this is not the class for you. he WILL help your writing to be better, but he won't make you feel good in the process. He is VERY picky about what he wants, and his grading system is annoying. Follow the syllabus and write down everything. He is smart but scary. Good luck.
Brother Lewis was beyond the worst teacher I have ever had. There was a death in my family while I was in his class, and I was super sick with the stomach flu on top of that the week we had to take a test, and he didn't care. He told me that I shouldn't be in college if I can't handle death and I should just give up while I still could.
Brother Lewis is one of the greatest professors in the history department, maybe even the school. His knowledge, especially in his field, is overwhelming. His lectures will make you think for days and he gives great feedback. He pushes you to be the best student you can be. He is hard but he will help you become a better person. TAKE HIS CLASS.
Brother Lewis is absolutely amazing, if you want to get your money's worth, take this professor, you will learn things that will inspire you and make you want to be better and be more proud and grateful for our fore fathers. I would highly recommend him is you want to learn and work hard :) very inspiring.
Brother Lewis is AMAZING. He is incredibly smart and is a very clear teacher. My favorite thing about his class was how organized it was. I always knew exactly was expected of me and when it was expected to be done. This was one of the most rewarding classes I've ever taken.
In a nutshell, if you don't know what you are doing, you must not take any of his classes. If you are grown up and know what to do, how to study, and how to deal with the world, then you must take him. He is a teacher for an adult. Sometimes his pontification on certain things bother me, but I know he knows what he is doing.
Brother Lewis is the man. I took many classes from him and loved them. He expects a lot from you, but you will learn a ton if you try. His film class was one of my favorite classes I ever took. Your writing will improve. He is pretty conservative, so you will hear his opinions. But overall, awesome guy. Take a class from him!
Lewis is sarcastic, analytical, and knows his stuff. He's not afraid to take pot shots at historical figures, but he also emphasizes their strengths. Sang "You'll Be Back" for us, and it was impressive. You'll be doing a lot of prep research, and he will cold call on you for answers. If you pay attention and keep up, his lectures are super fun.
I have never had so much anxiety in a classroom, he is super hard on students, he isn't patient and he expects perfection all the time. I don't really think he cares about the wellbeing of his students. Do not recommend him to anyone.
I worked super hard on my analysis paper in his class and he assigned it over thanksgiving break. My family was all having fun and I was in my room writing my essay. But I accidentally turned in the wrong file and when I realized, it was too late. And he wouldnt even give me partial points. He doesnt realize people make mistakes. Dont recommend.
He doesnt realize that people make mistakes. He wouldnt help me out when I accidentally turned in the wrong file even though I had spent hours writing my essay.
He is very smart but does not seem to understand that people make mistakes. He makes very harsh critisisms and he is not very helpful.
Doesnt care about his students. Will not help you pass even if youve tried your best the whole semester and done all the work on time, he is a harsh grader even if you spent hours on the work. You better be perfect the first time around or youre just going to fail.
Smart man, but if youre not as smart as him you might as well quit. He treats everyone like 5 year olds and makes everyone feel dumb even though we are in the class to learn. No respect or kindness towards his students. Very self absorbed.
Knew the class was gonna be a ridiculous when both both we had to get were written by himself. Very Self absorbed and talks down to people in his class when called on randomly. Class is based on 3 papers and 3 tests, and a weekly quiz. He loves to hear himself talk.a
Learned a lot in his class and worked very hard, got 90s on every essay, exam, quiz, discussion board and assignment. A week after the class ended he curved my grade down -190 points because he had marked me tardy and absent twice despite going through a lot of effort to be present every lecture. I assumed he'd marked me as present the whole time.
I learned so much from Professor Lewis. He is an incredibly tough grader but he gives excellent feedback and explains exactly what you got wrong. My writing improved leaps and bounds in his class. If you take a class from him you must be ready to participate as he likes to cold call.
He's got a brisk way of speaking and keeps his classes fast-paced. If you space out for a minute you might miss something, but he really hammers in the things you need to know and will repeat them every class. Understood that this was a 1 credit class and didn't expect much. However, he does expect you to participate a LOT if he calls on you.
Look, I get why people dislike Brother Lewis. He will say things in a way that make it feel like he's talking down to you. He has a very quick way of talking and stays focused on the subject at hand. Brother Lewis wants you to pass, but doesn't make avenues for you to do so if you have an emergency and will tell you to just drop the class.
This class is such an easy "A," but your attendance matters. He only accepts two unexcused absences. You only meet once a week, so it is easy to just show up to class. Take notes during the lecture, and then take a quiz after class about what you learned in class.
Im taking him through zoom and the zoom cut out & I was marked late because it was my fault the zoom wasnt working. He doesnt seem to understand that technology just doesnt work sometimes. He also has a really bad absence policy & if you miss more than twice say goodbye to passing the class. You automatically lose 40% of your final grade.
He has a very tight run class. If you dont show up you wont pass. If you miss a few classes you get kicked out. He comes off as rude.
I only took a week of his class before I dropped it. I've never seen a teacher this self-absorbed and rude to the students. The class was on zoom. One time he called my name for roll, and I unmuted, said "here", and muted. He then said "not here ok". So I unmuted myself again and said "I'm here." He then yelled at me and the whole class about it.
One of the Worst professors I have ever taken, Changed to online a week before class. Extremely strict and unempathetic. Easy to fail from being absence late. NO excuses for late woke. He loves hearing him self talk and majority of his question he asks are "guess the answer in my head questions" and if you don't know, he'll humiliates you.
If I could rate any lower trust me I would, He is rude and inconsiderate. If you don't know as much as he knows than you might as well throw in the towel because he doesn't care that it's an intro level class. I had a family emergency and he told me that if I can't handle that and still attend class then I wasn't fit for college. Such a rude man.
He cares a lot about making sure his students are prepared for a career and the benefits of studying history. He's not super nice but the class is super easy. all you have to do is show up, pay attention, take the short quiz, and the two big assignments for the semester and you're golden.
To take this class you must be prepared. You must read the assigned homework and remember principles. There is a graded lecture participation in which the professor selects discussants. The discussant (student) is placed in a one on one Q and A in front of the class. Know your HW and you will do well. Come unprepared and you will struggle.
Class content is well organized. If you study well, you will excel. PLEASE NOTE IF YOU HAVE ACCOMODATIONS/DISABILITIES: This teacher may seem insensitive to personal circumstances, but if you communicate to him frequently about your accomodations or disabilities, you will find him merciful and very willing to help. Not many understand this.
Brother Lewis is direct and transparent, and is a phenomenal instructor. The first week or two of the class can be intimidating, but the organization of the class is clear. If you prepare for class and take good notes you will do well. Participation is important, and each class you need to be prepared to teach on a specific question.
He is super aggressive in his classes. He puts you on the spot and then when you dont understand the question he is really rude. He is INSANE with attendance. If you are even a second late he will make you absent and if you get more than 2 absences, you fail the class. Dont recommend at all
Worst professor at BYUi, beware.
If you are not confident in your knowledge of history or feel uncomfortable being put on the spot to answer questions during class, then Brother Lewis is not for you. He is intense, but I would say it comes from a deep passion and love for the subject matter. Maybe the best lecturer on campus and you will learn a ton!
Bro. L is the worst picks on one student to talk to and only asks that person questions. Got multiple historical facts wrong and said he should burn every k-12 school because we didn't know his favorite auther's last book. Condescending, rude, treats everyone like idiots, has a specific format for essays but it's wrong sometimes. save yourselves!
For his History of Film class, he does not have you use a textbook. That's great if you are strapped for cash, but you feel lost in the woods when you prepare for potential pop teaching presentations. His classes are predictable and are lecture heavy but you can tell he is passionate about the subject and the lectures are more engaging than most.
Brother Lewis is very straightforward with why he teaches the way he does. His pedagogy is backed by research, and he is forgiving when cold-calling people. He doesn't expect you to know things before the content is covered, but you must be willing to get a few wrong answers to learn. Great lectures and very engaging
Make sure to take the quizzes and show up, and you'll be fine. He's a bit emphatic but is super passionate about making sure you're prepared for the major.
JUST FOLLOW THE CHECKLIST, AND YOU WILL GET AN "A" It's not a super tricky class, just time-consuming. You'll be doing a lot of research, but Bro. Lewis is available to help tailor your thesis and gives good feedback. Also, stay far, far away from passive voice :)
This class was amazing!! Brother Lewis is so kind, and he cares about his students. His lectures are amazing and very passionate. He does require participation, but it's not that hard. His homework load is super easy-just a 5 question quiz after each class, and then 2 larger but still very doable projects. He expects you to be to class on time.
While Brother Lewis is knowledgeable and easy to follow in class, many of his classroom policies are harsh. Asking for an extension results in an automatic point deduction, there are no electronics allowed, and his attendance policy is strict even if you're in an emergency. He has also yelled at us in class and used "yikes" when giving feedback.
He will cold call on you with no remorse or hesitation, and will continue to do so for half the class. If you take notes, you'll be okay. Get a notebook and a pen though he doesn't like electronics. He is intimidating, but if you act like that doesn't bother you he will like you more. That's what I did. He pushes you though.
I loved his teaching style. He was clear, concise, and thorough with his lectures. I thought I succeeded well, even beyond the grade I received. Being said, his grading and comments are personal based, rather than by rubric. He follows more of what he believed to be right, which if he does not agree with you on subjective matters, you are screwed.
Dr. Lewis is one of the best teachers I've ever had. His lectures are well-organized and prepared, and he exerts passion for the subject. He inspired me to be the best student and writer I could be. He is accessible and willing to help on any subject. I learned more from his class than any other I've taken. You definitely get out what you put in.
Would not recommend this teacher, the only good thing about this teacher is that he shows a great deal of enthusiasm.
Brother Lewis has very high expectations for his students! He might start out as a little scary but you come to learn that all he wants is us to learn. You will have a lot of reading during the week but he has great lectures and you will learn a lot.
Had some significant health issues that cropped up the first week of the semester and later took a medical deferral. Asked for an extension on a big assignment the first week and he was extremely dismissive and condescending of my circumstances. Highest grade I could get after 6 days was a C. He showed me no mercy at a very difficult time.
Hyrum Lewis is a challenging but rewarding professor. His lectures are thorough, and he expects active engagement. Attending class is a must. I found Unstuck study and the textbook helpful for prep. Overall, it's a tough but worthwhile course.
Professor Lewis is so passionate about history which awesome! But he cold calls a lot and makes it seem like the answer should just be obvious even though it's not always. He does get very passionate and raises his voice in class. The class itself wasn't hard, he's just VERY intense. Don't take from him if you don't want to be called on a lot.
Awesome professor. His class is very entertaining and engaging. He is very passionate about his teaching which I really liked. Class is easy and you will get an A if you just show up and participate.
Wowwwza. Brother Lewis is amazing. He knows his stuff, and knows how to teach. He's very animated and even though I regret taking the class, I still loved going to the lectures. Start off with a Quizlet and put the prep questions from each unit into a study guide. REVIEW THE MATERIAL AND QUIZZES AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN! Make the syllabus your Bible.
Brother Lewis is super passionate about history and it is reflected in his teaching style. Don't let yourself be intimidated, he is awesome! This class helped me feel more secure in my major.
Participate and raise your hand and you'll be fine, be ready to be called on at all times bc he will call you on the fly, take notes for his quizzes, assignments are not hard, be his friend and you'll be fine, he is very passionate about what he does but his teahing style isn't for everyone, I liked him but he was annoying to some of my classmates
Highly recommend him! He gives great feedback. Just be aware—he's very strict about deadlines. If you show up, participate, follow the assignment checklist, and turn everything in on time, you'll be just fine. Be prepared to be called on during class to answer questions. If you stay engaged and do the work, it's a great class.
Oh boy. Where do I start. Brother Lewis is one of the most enigmatic professors I've ever taken. If you show up and put in the work, this class will be great. If you miss class or assignments, your life will get very very difficult. He is super particular about the way his class is run. But do it right, and you'll have an incredible experience.
