She was a GREAT teacher I learn more with her than any other teacher I've took so far for math. She really is a nice lady, makes sure you understand if not takes time to help you during her office hours. HW is due the day of the test, and if you do your HW you will do fine on the test.

The teacher is nice and all, but to be honest the book was actually the one that did all the teaching. The lectures she gave in class were confusing, she stutters alot and has an accent, which didn't help. HW is key, if you were to take this class with her.

Take it from a person who has NEVER taken a geometry class before: Ms. Lai is AWESOME! She makes everything understandable and is NEVER demeaning. She'll answer questions and walk you through troublesome problems. But you still have to work hard. Had it not been for her wonderful teaching and my hard work combined, I wouldn't have received an A.

I took math32 with her and she made this class pretty easy. She gives you a sample midterm& final to prepare you for exams. Also reviews them. I literally studied ONE HOUR right before the exam (just go over his sample exam) and got perfect scores on all midterms. Its very easy because She only changes numbers on actual exam. TAKE HER for EASY A =)

Great teacher; too much hw and teaches too fast. Tries to justify it by saying she doesn't assign every problem... but her hw is a LOAD of sections all at once so that doesn't make sense. She will say to drop if we can't handle it - but some of us want to grad in time and kind of need her class. I have a love-hate relationship with her.

Great professor. She is wonderful at teaching and makes math easy to learn. She does go a bit fast sometimes and give too much homework but oh well. Super easy, extremely patient and encouraging. The homework is very fair, worked through in about an hour and a half usually for each week. She makes math fun, interesting, and engaging, and she tries so hard! I love math after this class.

I love her teachings, especially when I had her back in the summer. Sad that I had to drop the class due to dental issues and unable to keep up the pace to the lectures, overall great professor. Looking forward to taking that class again in the future. Tip: do ALL of your HW, review your notes, and email her whatever question you have in concern.

I think what is happening is that these students want to take her next semester, but are trying to draw you away in order to secure a seat in the class. It's really pathetic and disrespectful. Ms. Lai is clear, sympathetic, and fun in her math instruction. The class focuses on how to translate word problems into mathematical form. While Finite Math may be the “easiest” of the college level math classes, it’s very difficult in a logical way. Focus! Do your homework immediately, and find a tutor. You’ll succeed ;-)

You can never go wrong with Miss Lai. Her class is fun!! Math was fun when she's teaching. You can never fail any of her classes if you put in effort and that applied to most of the classes taught by someone else. Lovable and always making students laugh.

Summer 2014 - Lai is a GREAT teacher. She is clear, concise, and on point. Her best attribute is her willingness to help her students with plenty of study/review sessions. I hate math beyond human comprehension however, Lai made my hate scale from a 100% to a 85%. There were times I enjoyed math... very few times. Clear in her lectures, gives a ridiculous amount of extra credit and is SUPER helpful. If you fail her class then its because you did not study or do the HW. Go to lecture, take notes, Sacrifice a lamb.

Professor I-Shen Lai is by far one of the best Math professors i have encountered here at SMC. She lectures very well and goes the extra mile for students. She's funny at times too. Professor Lai is the best. She cares about her students' educational outcomes. She's interested in your success. The note packets that she gives out are beautifully done and more valuable than the book. You will refer to them in future classes. The hard part is getting in to the class. If you can get, you should. Do what it takes!

Her lectures are easy to understand. Book is required but you would hardly use it. She drops the lowest test grade for your over all grade. Online homework is not so much if you do it on the daily. If you feel stuck ATTEND Math 50 workshops they do help a lot. She teaches on a clear steady pace.

Calc II is a difficult topic to take in esp if you took it during a 6-week period like I did but Lai definitely makes it sooo much easier for everyone. It takes a very skilled prof. to teach stats the way Lai does. She kills it! I tried taking stats with another prof. last sem. and dropped it. Didn't understand a thing. Now, I have a 98% in the class and it's near the end. TAKE HER! You won't regret it! Just know that you have to do the work. Stats isn't easy and theres a lot of material to cover!

Professor Lai is a class act. I have taken her for both Math 50 and 54, and her genuine care for students elucidates through her lectures. I cant recommend her enough. Prof. Lai made an intense 6 week course much less intimidating. She covered each concept in depth and made everything seem easier to understand. The class was very fast paced, so if you take her during summer/winter you definitely have to make sure you don't fall behind on all the work. She's very helpful in office hours too. Arguably the best math professor I've had up until this point. I came out of high school early and she was very supportive. Genuinely wants her students to succeed and go places. Offered so much help from office hours to dropping of notes for the semester to dropping off food. Her exams are the same format as the questions in the notes and hw.

Professor Lai has been one of the best professors that I have ever had. She explains everything clearly, and you always have a chance to ask questions during office hours and after classes. She wants everybody to learn, and you can tell she does. Their exams are fair and if you put in the necessary work it is easy to pass with an A.

Professor Lai is the BEST math professor at SMC hands down. You will not regret taking her.

She's amazing! She gives everyone a packet with the notes, so you can take notes while she's taking notes. It's either PDF or she sends them through you by mail. For in person sessions, she does this too! This makes it perfect to study from. She also gives study guides that are somewhat similar to the exams & she's overall caring & understanding.

She has excellent lectures and gives tons of extra credit. She is a bit of a late grader though. I feel like she could go more in depth in each topic, however, the lack of depth could be the topic itself. All in all, Lai is a good professor and made this class easy for me. Math 8 itself isn't very hard if you just do the work and know how to study.

Aside from Professor Lai being a great professor, she has a lot to learn as a human being. Study hard (of course, you should since this is calculus 3.), participate in the class, be consistent with studying, be kind to classmates, and try to respect others' time. Then you'll be fine.

The only bad thing I have to say is she takes long to grade exams haha. If you struggle with math, try doing some hw every day, at least 2-10 Q's. If you cant do a lot of Q's don't stress. You can always ask Lai for help during office hours or emails. She's super approachable. Do the study guides before exams! The exam Q's are usually similar.

One of the best math professors ever. You can tell she really loves her job. Very passionate about math, and will try to make you as enthusiastic as her. Cares for every student, quite funny and uses some math memes. Tests are reasonable as well. Take her class if you have the chance, you won't regret it.

Prof. Lai is very, very good. I have had many instructors and She is my ATF. Her organization is great and she gives you everything you need to do well BUT YOU MUST DO THE WORK. If you work at it every day and keep up you could do well but the subject has a lot to cover so I am not sure how it can be any easier. Exams reflect material covered.

I highly recommend taking prof Lai's classes, I took her class for both Calculus 2 and Multivariable Calculus. Her lectures are very clear and show detailed frameworks for doing each steps, and you can really learn a lot in her classes. You can get good grades if you make effort on homework, lecture, and studyguide for the exam.

Professor Lai is the sweetest! She is hilarious and truly is passionate about math. She is an excellent teacher and explains confusing concepts with grace. Highly Recommend!

Professor Lai is amazing, always understanding and happy to help. Took her Calc 2 & 3. She loves math & shows it in her teaching. Lectures are very clear & encourages questions. Gives students a chance to approach problems in groups. Records lectures, recommend rewatching to study. Pay attention, do homework, & do study guides and you'll pass.

the best person + prof. you can tell she wants everyone to pass, she holds several review sessions EVERY week. though lectures get pretty tiring, you learn a lot. exams are fair: if you put in effort to study they won't be too hard. would take again for every math class. could not recommend enough. smc needs more professors like lai.

The subject itself isn't easy, but her lectures, and her workshop and office hours are really helpful. You will never get bored; in fact, you'll find yourself liking the subject and feeling less intimidating by taking her class. Homework is grade optionally; nonetheless extremely encouraged. Overall, best professor I've ever had.

The Best Prof at SMC. Patient, humorous, and inspiring. She truly cares about her students. Always ready to help. Straightforward homework and tests. Just follow her, and you will get a perfect journey in math. ( She always speaks Chinese, which is helpful for international students from China.)

She is the BEST professor at SMC. I have taken both Math 8 and Math 11 and have gotten an A in both classes. She is passionate about teaching and makes sure that students can reach out to her outside of class. If you put in the work and study, earning an A is definitely doable. If I were to continue with the math sequence, I would take her. 10/10

Great professor for a very hard class. I think she teaches extremely well, but if you don't put in at least 10 hours each week of self-studying, you won't do well. Her exams are really difficult and she doesn't give a ton of half points. It's a hard class, so put in a lot of your own time and you will be ok.

TAKE LAI! Amazing Professor and is truly passionate about teaching and her students and it is very clear. Extremely accessible, provides multiple extra credit opportunities, and is very good at teaching. Her lectures may be long, but she makes the concepts super clear and understandable. Truly the best prof at SMC and I mean that!

This teacher is highly recommended. She will help you succeed by answering any questions you have during office hours. The amount of work she gives you is fair and doable when taken with other courses. Furthermore lectures are very simple and easy to follow.

Professor Lai is truly passionate about teaching. The lectures can be long but she breaks down the concepts clearly. Taking advantage of the study resources like the textbook, notes packets, and Unstuckstudy's practice tools helped me succeed in this challenging yet rewarding class.
