Make sure to read the textbook. Slides are from the text book and you will need the information in the text in order to do well.
Soooooo hottttt<3
He's so hot lol He always try to make his voice loud and clear. This has been my first week but I'm liking this course so much more because he's the professor. I can't rate him yet in terms of difficulty. So far, so awesome. Hot hot hot!
The best.
Loved this class and the prof! His tests were super easy and he was really fair and open to suggestions about the course.
Great;knows his stuff, able to joke around with students and ingrates technology with lecture notes to keep the students interest.BUT, his midterm questions are oddly worded and sometimes it is not clear what he wants as an answer. They are also more difficult to the average student because they incorporate outside of the box applications toconcepts
Great prof who is very interactive with the class and answers questions with great clarity. Made three hour lectures a breeze for the first time in my 4 years of university. I very much recommend this class!
He's British - what more do I have to say? In all seriousness though, I found that his classes became more interesting and fun as the semester progressed, and although the final exam was far more difficult than the midterms I would say that it was an excellent course overall.
Great prof, great at explaining concepts. Goes over what he explained from the previous class for a few minutes in the next - ie. if you didn't understand it the first time you can catch up in the next lecture. Midterm, not too hard, exam was slightly easier. Highlight what he says is on the exam bc it likely will be.
One of the best profs I've ever had! He knows his stuff and is very good at explaining important concepts in a way that students can understand. He seems to really enjoy teaching and genuinely cares about his students!
Great professor. Really makes an effort to connect with the class asking questions and taking questions in the middle of lecture. Material was straight forward, everything on the exam came from the lectures. Go to class/watch the lectures you get a feel for what is important.
a really nice proff. one of the best i ever had. hes really helpful and easy to understand.
Iain is an excellent professor. His accent combined with his passion for biology makes lectures something to look forward to in the week. He's got a great sense of humor and loves to answer questions. Midterms were very simple, and the exam was fair. If you have a choice, choose Iain. (Plus he's a babe.)
Definitely one of my favorite profs he's very clear and clearly passionate about biology. He's funny too which is a bonus and he makes the class very interesting.
A very nice and awesome professor. He is not only a professor, he is a true TEACH-ER. He is willing to spend as much time as you want in a subject that you'd need clarification on. Beside that, he has a very good characteristic, as a person, and a family guy. Value you him when you do have him.
Awesome Guy. Very interesting Class. Super Helpful. Actually asked questions during class. Great Accent. Just an all around nice guy and good prof. Very Fair. Study. Listen. Do the work and you'll do amazing.
Prof. McKinnell is by far the best professor I have ever had in my academic career. He's clear, knows his stuff, funny and makes you want to come back for every lecture! Very helpful when it comes to asking questions. 5/5 no doubt.
Very good prof. It's easy to tell he's passionate about bio. Can't say I ever asked him for help, the TA's were very helpful though. His tests are mostly fair and he gives a good idea of the important topics. Explains things very well. Easy on the eyes too :)oh yeah and his accent makes it 10x better to listen to him lecture.
Best prof. i had all year. His teaching style really made me interested in what he was saying (did not feel like falling asleep). really hoping to have him again in the future. M/C exam, labs were exciting and easy. Lecture slides were sometimes right from the book.
A good prof. he cares for his students and he is very helpful when asked for help. Recommended
Dr. McKinnell is without a doubt the best prof you could ask for. Extremely kind and caring towards his students, always willing to help no matter how long it takes and makes lectures something to look forward to. He makes the material very clear and makes the class atmosphere fun and relaxing. Definitely recommended.
The best professor I have had so far. He is willing to teach and passionate about biology. Explains all the concepts very well. I really liked the fact that he was open to all the questions from the class and he tried to answer all of them.
Professor McKinnell is very enjoyable to listen to, and is extremely clear and concise in his explanations.
Iain McKinnell is truly a amazing instructor. Very kind, funny and all around fun to have. His lectures are to the point and his exams are relatively straight forward- plus he gives exam hints. He's extremely helpful outside of class. Definitely my favourite professor by far, I would take any class with him again.
Great prof!
He is very passionate about Biology and always loves what he's talking about. He definitely does not bore you! He is also very sweet, helpful and tells you exactly what to study for an upcoming midtermfinal. Definitely recommend this professor you will get an A if you attend his lectures, and his slides are FULL of enough information !
He's very passionate and gets people into his lectures. He is also fair when it comes to the questions he asks on his midterms and his grading. One of my favorite professors so far!
Iain is a good professor, in terms of describing the material well in class. He does that very well; however, his slides are one word points. If you miss a class, you are screwed. Also, if you aren't a good note-taker, then he isn't your best option. Aside from that, a good lecturer.
Amazing and kind. Works hard to ensure the course material is understood, taking the time to go over details and reexplain important concepts. Starts lectures with a review of the last one, which is very helpful. Attendance is key, not all information is on slides. VERY fair tests, focus on fully understanding large concepts. Top 2 favourite prof.
As a passionate biology major it is always refreshing to find a professor that is crystal clear at explaining exactly what you need to know while also keeping it engaging. Dr. McKinnell is a brilliant lecturer, one of the best at Carleton. In a matter of weeks I learned more from him than any biology class I have ever taken. 5 star Professor.
excellent prof, very passionate and explains concepts thouroughly
Hes a great prof. Hes able to explain everything in detail and in a way you can understand. As well, if you need help, he will gladly answer your questions. The tests were tough, but if you study you'll do well.
You need to attend his lectures to understand his slides. But his lectures are fun and he makes everything fun and understandable.
He's honestly one of the best profs I've had in my first semester at Carleton. He's clear and informative. He occasionally makes jokes which makes you like the lectures more. His exams are a bit tricky though since one answer is more correct than the other. I would definitely take another class with him.
Iain is an amazing prof and makes all the lectures enjoyable. Tests and exams were tough, but if you do well in the lab it helps balance out your grade. He's very passionate about biology and is always willing to help answer any questions. Enjoy this class because BIOL1004 is brutal in comparison!
Lectures are pretty boring because its a repeat of grade 12 biology pretty much but even though it makes you want to sleep, PAY ATTENTION! Lots of details he conveys verbally that aren't on the slides. Exams were surprisingly difficult? At times it was hard to determine exactly what he was looking for. Good prof, cool accent
I've had Iain for many classes and he is one my favourite Profs at Carleton. Go to his lectures, listen, make good notes and you're set. He describes everything really clearly and is super approachable if you need help. It's clear how much he loves anatomy and he is great at teaching it. The tests are fair if you study and go to all the lectures.
did his anatomy course in 2013/2014 and repeated 1103 with him just because he was teaching. Great Professor! Very committed to getting knowledge in your head and will help you with any problems in class! Anytime I see him I always say hi! Never had a prof this good. Go to class, listen, read the text and visit his office for help A or B+
He made the class very interesting. You could also use the cuol if you dont make it to class which was very handy in reviewing in exam season! An amazing professor, wish I have more classes with him in the future!
easy on the ears and eyes. just stop slurping your coffee every 5 seconds, its gross for earphone users at home
Every detail he says is fair game on his exams - which makes his exams very difficult. You always have to pay constant attention
Great guy, I don't regret taking his class one bit. He really cares about his students and puts in the effort to explain the course material properly. He's pretty funny too so going to his classes aren't boring. Shows lots of videos in case what he's saying doesn't make sense to you. Pretty bummed that he's not the Bio1104 prof
First year Biology is always a tough course but Iain makes it so fun and really teaches with passion about his subject. He really cares about his students and is just an all around great prof. Exams are hard, but not unreasonable if you attend the lectures and actually study well. Would love to have him again!
Overall great proff! Would take this course again if he taught it!
great teacher very passionate about his work and it makes you interested. fantastic guy but exams are diffacult
He's great I love him. Funny and he knows what he's talking about. It is biology though you will need to put in your own work to ensure that you know what you're doing.
Great prof. Makes lectures enjoyable and really cares about what he is teaching. If you put in the work unlike any other class, you will do well. Exams were fair and reasonable. 10/10
IM is awesome. Really good speaker and hilarious prof, although the material can pile up quickly. My advice is start studying well before test/exam dates. And beware! His notes are not very informative at all. You need to take your own... and good luck keeping up!
Iain is a really nice guy, and good at explaining the material, but his lecture slides tend to be disorganized and disjointed. He also makes his multiple choice tests unnecessarily hard- it seems as if he is trying to trick us.
Love Iain!! Best prof ever. fair exams but don't just use the slides he will give more detail than whats written and questions can be specific. He is passionate about what he teaches which makes it easy to learn
Obviously is very passionate about biology and anatomy. Makes hard concepts easy to understand! He uses the black board a lot which is useful if you go to class. Would take any of his classes, plus he has a great accent
the absolute greatest prof i have ever had and ever will have. the nicest and loveliest human being on planet earth. iain, i love you. lots of people complain about it being difficult to pay attention to his lectures, H E C K N A H, this man has the greatest voice ever i swear !! iain is actually hella cool and rly cares about his students.
Prof tells you to mostly focus on material taught in lecture and expand on it using the textbook, if it's not covered in lecture you don't need to worry about it. He is very passionate about his work and makes you want to listen to what he's saying, his British accent also helps. Overall great prof
Easily the best biology class I've ever taken at Carleton. I want him to teach every single course, he is absolutely lovely. Sweet, kind, passionate about the material, and so dang intelligent!! I was excited to go to his classes, and if you study according to the learning objectives on the slides and go to class, you'll do well.
Yes, I failed, but I did not take Biology in High School so it was very difficult. Taking it a second in the summer was much better, it was the same lectures so I understood better. He is overall a good teacher, pay attention to what he says in lectures.
Absolutely amazing prof
I found this course extremely challenging as I didn't have any background in biology. He was a good teacher, though.
His British accent is super beautiful and makes it really easy to pay attention to. He's very passionate about biology and you can tell by the way he teaches. His lecture slides don't cover nearly as much as what you need to know for the tests though so make sure you go to class and read the textbook. Overall super nice, would take his class again.
Hes a dilf so he makes it easy to pay attention, really great prof cares about what hes teaching and makes it entertaining
Professor McKinnell is very passionate about what he is teaching and makes you want to learn more and be excited to go to class. I found the midterms pretty difficult and the questions a lot harder then expected. He's an overall pretty fair and good prof and I enjoyed his lectures. This course is basically a review of high school grade 11 and 12.
Iain is awesome, keeps the lectures engaging as possible, he really cares for his students and makes sure to go over topics students do not understand. To get . good grade in this class, study study study, and make sure to understand the material beforehand so you can better be grasp his lectures
Dr. McKinnell is a pretty good lecturer, he definitely makes the hard concepts easier to grasp. Unfortunately, the 4 assignments were quite difficult because it's open book. Exams are pretty fair. I suggest using his slides as reference but definitely don't rely on them. I read the textbook like it was a novel and I did well.
A great professor for first year science students. The lectures are a little slow, but that can benefit some people who need time to process the information. The tests are difficult, and I would highly recommend reading the textbook on top of the lectures, because you need to truly understand the content. Would definitely take his classes again.
Guys an absolute beauty. Unreal at explaining concepts. Takes his time for students who are slower learners. Makes lectures very interesting. Only downside is the exams and how they consist of all exteremly difficult multiple choice questions.
Overall great, easy to listen to teach, very engaging, and is clear in what is required of you for each assignment and exam. Test formats are somewhat difficult, just requires proper studying with textbook and mainly good lecture notes. Definitely one of the best profs Ive had this semester.
Great prof. I really enjoyed going to the biology lectures. He was really accessible after class and if you found something confusing or interesting, he was really easy to approach and ask about the topic.
Yes, you must put in work and read the textbook/slides to do well in this course. However, with Dr. McKinnel makes it much easier than other Profs. His lectures consist of everything you need to know for the midterms/ exam. I recommend taking his course. he is very passionate about what he teaches. I would definitely take his course again.
Hes super easy to pay attention to with his angelic accent. Not to mention his fabulous flannel fits. Hes a passionate embryologist and truly loves what hes doing. Makes me want to come to class, also he goes into depth thats not on the slide. If its not on the slides its not on the final. ALSO GO TO TUTORIALS!!!
Dr. McKinnell is a very cool professor. He keeps his lectures interesting by including tons of jokes. His lecture slides are very bare, so be sure to take good notes throughout the semester as all of his midterm/exam questions come from what he says in the lecture rather than what is on the slides. Use the textbook for clarification on topics only.
Iain is an amazing professor. Definitely a tough class but he makes it so interesting and easy to follow. Tests are tough but fair. Would 100% recommend anyone take a class with him
Interesting lectures, great accent. Very difficult midterms & final. I would suggest going to class and using all resources available (tutorial, practice tests etc) as he sometimes uses similar questions on midterms/finals.
Study from the text book. If not you won't pass.
Tests were not fair, questions were very unclear, purely hypothetical situations. Questions mostly related to random details from the textbook or lectures. Lectures are just a review of the textbook, everything in the same order and same explanations. Classes were a waste of time. That being said, nice man, accommodating, good at teaching.
Iain is very passionate about what he's teaching. Lectures were enjoyable. Quizzes were easy, but tests were very long and difficult, basically all scenarios where you had to critically think. The labs (workshops because online) were DREADFUL. Took 8+ hours to do, it was weekly, and your TA really determined your grade. Need to put the work in.
honestly amazing teacher, so passionate about his students and his field of study. he tries to only teach what you actually need to know, doesn't ramble. reading textbook is great since it covers a-lot of the things he doesn't talk about that would be included in his tests and quizzes. however, he includes tricky questions on his tests & exams
Interesting class, lots of high school review. The weekly labs were horrid and took up all my free-time every weekend. Fair marking scheme though, overall pretty cool guy. I stopped watching the lectures and just read the textbook chapters because the lectures were extremely vague and tests used material not covered in the lectures.
Dr. McKinnell is an amazing prof. He is incredibly passionate in his lectures, so even the "boring" subject matter becomes interesting. His lecture format is easy to study and I learned a lot from him. I did find the tests were tricky. You need to really understand the material, not just memorize facts.
This guy is truly amazing. He set up his CuLearn page better then any other professor I have every had. Made it easy to navigate. He put tons of effort into his online lectures. Made the material very easy to understand, Taught very well.
Love Iain, after having him for first year bio it was nice to have him again for anatomy. The course is hard, but his enthusiasm during his posted lectures makes it a very interesting course. Labs sucked but Iain doesn't have anything to do with those. Tests were challenging but fair, MUST watch the lectures as you are tested on things he says.
A true rarity of a professor. The man loves his work. I say this because I have never witnessed such care for the students and their learning. Its almost like he prioritizes inspiration and enthusiasm and this is what drives the learning. I pray my future professors are at least HALF as good as this guy, and that is the truth!
Nice dude, but tests are very hard (mostly application based) and long scenarios and there's very little time for the tests as well. Labs are HORRIBLE and the TAs for this course are one of the most useless ones I have ever met in any course in uni. They don't answer questions on time (will answer after assignment is due)
There's weekly study modules AND homework quizzes which take up extra time and give you extra work to do. They're easy, but I wish we didn't have them because it wastes a lot of m time
Even though i'm not a biology person, I loved the way he taught the class. He's a pretty nice guy and his lectures were easy to follow. I liked how we were graded on multiple different things (quizzes, labs, assignments, tests) as it gives you the opportunity to improve your grade if you do poorly on a couple things. His exam wasn't too hard either
I was looking forward to Bio 1103. I am disappointed. I'm not sure what it is but work was very unclear on what to do and how to do it. Grading was harsh and unhelpful. Test questions were brutal and required lots of thinking but not enough time to do so. So much potential but ended up making people miserable
Professor Iain is a wonderful educator. His lectures are clear, detailed and are divided into segments which makes it more convenient for the student. He is always there to answer any asked questions during his office hours. But the labs are horrible, very unfair graders and not enough info provided. The course plan is dropping everyone's average!!
i have a vendetta against British people now
I don't think I've ever had a teacher as passionate about his teaching and I probably never will. He is a great guy and somehow makes really boring content interesting. Plus he actually cares about students well being. Tests can be challenging so you do need a deep understanding of the content
Iain McKinnel is a fantastic professor that is very passionate about what he teaches, which makes the class a lot more enjoyable. Tests are mostly application based, so get ready to actually understand what's going on, but he does give many chances to boost your grades 5-10% if the class average is poor. Overall a great prof, he is fair, and kind.
He makes the tests way harder just cause it's online/open book.. there's a difference between application based and whatever he puts on his tests because they're things he never taught. He also claims we will only be tested on lecture material but that's a lie read the textbook thoroughly. I'd rather it be proctored cause the q's were too hard.
Glad there's a character limit or else I would have wrote a whole dissertation on him. I never had a problem with his test time limits until the last test because each question required you to draw punnet squares, which takes a lot of time. Yet he didn't take that into account when making the test. AWFUL PROF
Dr. Mckinnell is my fav prof from this term, his lectures are amazing and he always sounds like what he's talking about is the most fascinating thing on the planet. Tests are really hard, so make sure you read the textbook and take notes to understand. There's sometimes 5-10% bonus make-up quizzes though which is nice. Definitely suggest him!
Great class. Very proactive! Overall such a great professor
Dr. McKinnell is an awesome prof! Kinda wish he made his tests a bit easier though. I feel that my grades on the tests were not reflective of my knowledge on the subject. However, he is always accessible outside class and is very helpful. He responded to my emails within mins with a zoom link to answer my question a few times. It's clear he cares!
It's very true when people say the tests are difficult and application-based. To do well on these tests you need to read the textbook and really understand the material. To be honest I found his lectures useless aside from the fact they gave guidance as to what to read from the textbook. Nice guy but his tests will make you feel stupid lol
Really good prof!
He is very passionate about teaching biology. You will feel like you understand the material after listening to him. The tests are really hard though, you must study well for them. The tests are all application based and not necessarily definitions. You must know the material well to do good on them.
I had Professor McKinnell for a first-year class in Biology in the Fall Term and I would say that I really liked his course! Although the course was online, Professor McKinnell was thoroughly available to answer any queries via email or the discussion section on Brightspace. The course was not too difficult. 10/10 would recommend Prof. McKinnel!
Can't wait to take future courses with him! Very engaging!
The prof is amazing, too bad the online lab section is awful.Sometimes it can go as far as being a guessing game for labeling anatomical parts. If you have the option, never take the labs online. I don't know if I am just handed a set of horrible TAs, but lab marking is completely unreasonable. Once again, prof is very good, just very annoying labs.
SHOWING UP IS VERY IMPORTANT since theres worksheets, and he goes more into depth about what is on the slides to give you deeper understanding. He is clearly passionate he makes everything interesting and cares about his students which is evident from one class. I find myself focusing on my biology marks just because he has made it so engaging.
Took this class last year and Iain is a great prof, he is super sweet and always willing to help out. It is a very lecture and textbook heavy class though so make sure to be on top of those. If you put in the work, you will get a good grade.
His storytelling method during the lectures keeps you engaged and the class itself is very interactive. He is light-hearted and simplifies the concepts relatively well for a general audience. His tests however are very difficult (being open book and all), so you really have a strong grasp of the topics and study the textbook.
Professor Iain is one of the best profs I have met in Carleton. As long as you pay attention and focus 100% focus in the lecture, you will get everything you need. The way he teaches and engages with his students is really unique, plus he is a British professor so his accent is spot on. He is a passionate, friendly and lovely professor.
Prof. McKinnell has a clear, methodical approach to teaching BIOL1103. He understands that it is intended as an intro course and is careful to not overwhelm students. His lectures are very engaging and are a great supplement to the textbook; he also gives generous accommodations. Absolutely worth taking a class with Prof. McKinnell.
Probably didnt do as well as I could have in this class since i didn't read the textbook, expecting a B. This is no fault of this prof, he gives engaging lectures with amazingly organized and descriptive slides. Lab was very difficult and is worth 40% which I felt wasn't really fair. Would take another class by him just to have him as a prof again.
Great prof, truly has your best in mind. What was expected of us was clearly laid out and so was the contents of quizzes. Labs were also pretty fun to do and often matches the contents of the course.
Professor McKinnell was amazing! He made lectures entertaining, and truly cared for his students wellbeing and performance. Definitely read the textbook though, as he only covers the basics in the lectures and the tests cover more in-depth understanding from the textbook. As long as you put in the work, the course isn't that difficult.
Professor McKinnell provides engaging lectures, however, the lectures cover the basics and you definitely need to read the textbook to get a good grade on tests. I found the tests to be hard and wordy but since they are online and open-book, it helped a lot. Use the textbook, study well, and you will get a goo grade.
Dr. McKinnell was an excellent prof. As a first-year student, his focus on student well-being and success was certainly appreciated! There are many chances to score a high grade in the class with in-class worksheets, multiple tests, etc. The best advice... attend your lectures! They are critical, as the slides do not contain the complete picture!
Amazing prof! He is so fun and easy to listen to, and makes everything interesting! Very compassionate teacher cares a lot about his students, truly wants you to learn. He is very fair with his grading and listens to students' concerns. He loves teaching and he is so good at it. If you have the chance to take one of his classes, absolutely do!
Great professor, and super interesting lectures. The lectures and easy to follow along with, and he will always answer questions. The only thing about this class is that the tests are hard, and you have to read the textbook if you want to get a 90+. Mckinnel obviously cares a lot about his students!
Uses a test bank for his tests which is why they're so hard -they're technically biology questions but not related much to what we've learned. There will be questions that'll have you sitting there thinkng what they even have to do with the unit.
He is a very passionate, kind and approachable Professor who truly enjoys teaching. His midterms and exams can be a little tricky, but most of this course is a review from high school biology.
Loved this professor. Very passionate about teaching, very easy to understand, teaches very well and is very engaging. Was also extremely understanding and caring when I asked for an extra day on a quiz as I wasn't feeling well at the time. One of the best professors I've had.
This guy right here is the reason I make myself go to school. He is such an amazing professor who really cares about his students and want to see them succeed. He is super funny and engaging during lectures, and he is awesome at answering questions and helping outside class hours. I would go out of your way to take a class with him!
Literally my favorite prof I had this semester. Lectures are fun and engaging, and content is explained super well. I loved this class so much and he had such a huge influence on that. Expectations are crystal clear, and test content is always directly linked to the review and lecture content. Loved it so much and can't suggest it enough.
The most fun, inspiring, caring, well-spoken prof ever. Approaches teaching with applied learning activities, case studies and reasonable quizzes to practice modules. Lectures are fun and engaging so show up and make the most of it! Best Bio class ever, cannot express enough how much I loved this class with Prof McKinnell.
Great prof who is extremely entertaining to listen to and genuinely has a great passion for biology. Lectures are very clear and concepts are explained well, with minimal textbooks readings. Weekly quizzes are fair and unit tests are certainly tougher, but all online open book which is nice. Great course would take again!
Such a great professor, he is very nice and always wiling to answer questions and encourages them, the lectures were always very captivating and made me want to learn more. Gets us to think outside the box and inspires curiosity which is also great! Definitely would recommend!
It was very interesting!
Prof. McKinnell is a passionate and engaging instructor. The lectures are informative, but the tests can be tricky. Attending class, reading the textbook, and using resources like Unstuck study are key to doing well. Overall, a rewarding course.
Tests and homework were online, multiple choice, and open book. He's boring and easy to tune out, but the class wasn't difficult.
He is really interesting and entertaining during lectures. There's a lot of info packed into the course but his explanations are concise and easy to understand. If you show up to lecture you should do well
He explains the course material very well. Great lectures
My favourite professor in my 4 years of undergrad!!!! he is amazing
He's a super engaging prof. He's funny and he's kind and you can tell he really cares about his students and wants them to succeed. The material and learning outcomes are super straightforward.
Great prof. He tries to make things engaging and there's always a good visual aid which I appreciate. The lectures are not entirely exhaustive of what you need to know but he does a great job of teaching the basics. You can tell he actually enjoys what he does!
