Really hard class...but definitly learned a lot. Lectures really really fast and doesn't slow down when you go to his office hours. Though it's a really hard class it's mostly because their is so much material.
Dr. Ball is a nice funny guy but his class is next to impossible. His tests are some of the hardest I have ever taken. The class is all lecture based. He lectures to fast and it is hard to comprehend the vast amounts of information. He just needs to slow down and the class might be eaiser
His tests are extremely long and hard, there is no time for hesitation. He lectures really fast and too fast to absorb all the info.
Very tough class. Somewhat helpfully in office hours. Huge curve at the end of the semester because most people are failing.
Had Ball for Chem 151 Lab. We never knew what his expectations were. He'd say not to worry about something on the lab, but then take off points for it. Labs are only worth 10 points and he just takes off points here and there for whatever he feel like. Does a horrible job explaining. Thinks he's still at UCSD where he can yell at a huge lecture.
this guy is the nuts!!!!he is a bloddy legend in the making, and i wish i could be as good as him one day. hope to see you again my son
Dr. Ball is definitely the epitome of a nerd. His lectures are long and boring and the only reason I did well was because I took high school chem. He means well but he just isn't the best at making the concepts clear.
It was a great class!
DO NOT TAKE HIM. I dont say this just because he is a hard teacher but his lectures are not lectures. Its more like he is up there just to show everyone how much he knows. He is a good guy, but for a professor NO WAYY. Take him if you want to fail.
Dr. Ball is honestly a really good teacher... he is very smart and although he goes through his notes fast, which he warned us in the beg. of the semester he would, he is very helpful during office hours... Dr. Ball is a really chill teacher and Im excited to take him again.
I took his Lab class, he's a complete nerd. He's really passionate about Chemistry, and if you do anything wrong in the lab, he'll notice right away. I would recommend taking his Lecture class though because he seems pretty knowledgeable
If you are not a chem major take Chemistry in Society. He fills his lectures with tons of "fluff" that you don't need to know. So make sure you get the meat of the info. The actual Science stuff. But he will sometimes add the "fluff" to his tests. HOWEVER he always finds a way for xcredit, Ex: your name sometimes= 5pts. Oh and his ppt's are online!
LOVE HIM! a total chem nerd but he knows it! He is really funny too which makes class fun. Midterms aren't too hard and office hours are helpful. I didn't take notes all semester but just did optional homework and went to office hours! I got a B without trying too hard. I definitely recommend him!!
Asked at the beginning of the semester who had taken AP chem in high school. For the rest of the term those people were clearly his favorites, and the rest of us seemed to "inconvenience" him with our questions.
If you are willing to put in the time and effort you can get an A, he is VERY willing to put in the time to help you during office hours. His midterms are curved 10% which helps a lot, plus they're not too hard, just do all the practice problems he assigns. He also has quizzes which help to prepare for the midterms and to see what you need work on.
took him for General chem. He is a great guy. seems like a very nice dude, but as far as his teaching skills...mm lets just say he likes to brag about how much he knows rather than really try to teach. He is a nice guy though and on his good days he is rather helpful. average grade on tests is 65. good luck
Labs are hard enough as it is but he is a picky grader and never helps you. He is very stern and hates people that don't know what they are talking about. If Chem is NOT your major, pick an easier teacher because his class is hard to pass
switch out now if you have him
DO NOT take this teacher for chem lab. If you do, you will regret it. He has favorites and if you're not one of the few who are, he will find you as an "inconvenience" to him. Mr. Ball is not welcoming in his office hours and if you ask questions that he finds unintelligent, he will make you feel like an idiot. This class is suicide.
I don't understand the fuss everyone else is creating with this professor. Yes, he is very attentive to detail, so your lab notebooks have to be detailed, but that doesn't make him an unfair grader. He's helpful, and if you see him during office hours he will always help you. An A+ is definitely attainable.
Absolute horrible teacher. Extremely hard tests! If you have this teacher get out! Makes you feel stupid if you don't know how to do something.
He is a fast paced guy. He goes through very quick but all his power points are online ahead of time so just print those out and then take notes on them and you will be fine. I didn't think the tests were too hard if you study. Others hate him, but he is probably my favorite teacher.
Worst prof I've ever had. Takes off points disproportionately and felt like he hated me the entire year. Also, it's really infuriating that he's nice and jokes around with those who are willing to be dumb and brown nose.
It's kinda funny how i got an A in my chem lecture class but barely passed his chem lab class with a C-. Hard grader and is very detail-oriented. Unless you end up being one of his "favorites," you will get a low grade. Take anyone else, ANYONE!
Very smart guy. Very clear with his teaching. Rarely made mistakes during lecture. His lectures engaged me and he was also very open to questions. He wasn't the most helpful person during office hours but did help. Tests were reasonable, nothing too extraordinary. Very fair amount of homework. I am very thankful of his online notes.
Knows his subject well. He is very easy to reach and will take time to help you if you ask.
I took professor Ball at Mesa college. He's a nice enough guy but an absolutely horrible teacher. He definitely plays favorites and has a moody grading scale. He also had a hard time explaining things when questions were asked. Avoid him at all costs!
The worst Professor in the history of Chem professors. He definitely has his favorites and those are the people who do well(already understand chem or took AP Chem). If you are a FRESHMEN DON'T TAKE HIM!!! If you barely understand Chem, YOU WILL FAIL. Take him if you want to fail.
Brilliant professor; slides are clear and simple w/ multiple examples even though he goes way too fast.Very flexible w/ hrs via appointments and helpful; tests are fair enough;comprehensive final was surprisingly tricky b/c part of it test on knowing concepts of certain equations.Overall,it was okay class; recommended professor. Take him.
I know a lot of people didn't like Dr. Ball at all, but I thought he was great. He talks fast and has crappy hand-writing, but he knows his stuff. I had him for 151 lecture and lab and 152 lab and thought he was great. And he's super helpful in office hours. Definitely recommend him for lab - it's more relaxed and he explains more.
He is the worst Professor I have ever come in contact with. He favors the people who have taken AP Chem and ONLY the people who understand. Absolutely useless in office hourss, he's a super nerd. Bottom line....if you want to fail by all means take him.
Awful Professor he doesn't teach well and has favorites. (Those who have taken AP Chem.) Doen't explain well and if you don't know or like Chem he is not the professor for you. Take him if you want to fail.
Dr. Ball rushed through his lectures but his powerpoints are very insightful. When I went to office hours he would never give me the answer to a question but he would help me to try to reach the answer. If you take his class you will have to put a lot of time and effort into studying.
This class is difficult. Dr. Ball is very intelligent and he is always willing to help. Office hours are a must. His sarcasm is entertaining for those that understand and although the class is fast pace with a lot of information, he does an excellent job teaching it.
SUPER hard class. Regardless of the teacher, this is a challenging course. Dr. Ball is a nice guy but has a very scientific mind and its hard understand the concepts sometimes.
Hes not HORRIBLE - but he certainly isn't great. He does have a lot of points so even if you fail two tests, you can still do really well in the class. Office hour arn't much help though.
Dr. Ball is very intelligent and is well educated in chemistry. However, this class was EXTREMELY difficult and I often had no idea what he was talking about. I would not recommend taking his class if you haven't taken AP chem in high school because he goes very fast and to me he made absolutely no sense
Dr. Ball is a straight up GOOBER hes hilarious cause he's so nerdy. True, he goes kind of fast so Its hard to keep up in lecture. I didnt go to alot of lectures, just read up on the chapters and visited for office hours with a couple questions. Its very doable this class, he doesnt have favorites, its just cause the AP kids talked more was all. :)
I am a hopeful Chem major, but, after my experience with Dr. Ball, I am not sure if I will be pursuing this field. I did not take AP Chem, and Dr. Ball always seemed to be "punishing" me for that. He was never helpful in office hours, and he would always criticize my lab reports, without offering any guidance. Next semester, I am NOT taking him!
He is super smart but not super nice immediately. He definitely likes some students over others. Not very clear teaching but I think thats how 151L is. Graded unbelievably harshly, I do not know how I got an A-. If you work and show an interest in him and the class you do well.
Dr. Ball is brilliant. Definitely knows what he is talking about but goes VERY quickly. He is very helpful during office hours, he will essentially walk you through all the homework questions if you ask. Tests require a lot of studying but he holds review sessions before each one. I found skimming the textbook before lecture helpful.
Really not a hard class. He knows students at this level don't like chemistry, and he curves everything way more than necessary. If you do the homework and read the book, this class is a very manageable one.
He is awful. I can't understand anything in he says in class because he over complicates his explanations, he hasn't passed out not one study guide, and overall, VERY unhelpful and unfriendly. I definitely would not recommend this class. At this level, chem should be simple. Especially for non-majors.
This professor was completely unhelpful, extremely picky with lab reports and was non-existent during his supposed office hours (which there was only 1). His quizzes before experiments are almost impossible to do well on. DO NOT take him for gen chem lab!!
Great teacher. Picky and makes you think but once you figure him out it's easy to get tens on lab reports. There will be no faking knowledge with Dr. Ball but he is very helpful and super brilliant. If you aren't into sarcasm or want an easy A don't take him, but it you get on his good side and crack a joke he will forever help you out.
Chem 101 should not be a difficult class, however, he made it nearly impossible. He is SUCH a smart guy, but he can't explain things with clarity. He never pauses during his lectures, and always faces the board, so good luck trying to ask any questions. If you're looking for an easy GE, DON'T take his class.
Chem 101 for non-majors shouldn't be impossible. He goes through about 100 slides in one lecture and has an extremely difficult quiz every week. He also overanalyzes homework and rarely gives A. Also, don't expect him to help you. He is very condescending and un helpful in office hours. Do not recommend for your GE.
He's not that hard, 5 quizzes and 9 problem sets (due once every 1-2 weeks), but he removes worst one of each as long as you do them all. Midterm and a final, gives extra credit to start on both. Most importantly if you go to class and take notes that pretty much is the quizzes and tests; everything comes from the lectures so you should go to class
If you come to lecture, read the book, and actually spend time on doing the homework, it's a manageable class. The lecture PPT slides AND STUDY GUIDES FOR THE TESTS are online. He does give extra credit on both the midterm and final. And he drops your lowest grade from homework and problem sets. I liked him, he's funny in a quirky way!
Dr. Ball was not interesting or helpful whatsoever! On the first day, he said he did not know how to incorporate the "society" aspect of the course into his lecture. This class was more difficult than it should have been; he did not take questions during lecture, talked fast and unclearly, and sped through lecture. Do not take his CHEM 101 class!
This class is pretty much as boring as it gets. I used a tutor for pretty much the whole class because I did not understand Dr. Ball's lectures. I got an A+ on the midterm but pretty much failed every quiz (they're ridiculously hard). Got a B on the final so overall B in the class. I would definitely not take him again.
I absolutely loved Dr. Ball! Yes at first i thought he was a little difficult and unfair but go to office hours and he is amazing! one of the funniest teachers i have encountered and pretty fair guy. I love him take him for lab but not if you just want to slack off
Dr. Ball often seems annoyed on the surface but in lab and in office hours, he's a super nice and funny guy! His grading is kind of harsh but once you get used to it, it isn't difficult to get a 13+ out of 15 on labs. He tells you exactly how he wants it if you ask him. Lets you use notebook on quizzes and makes lab interesting. I'd recommend him!
Dr. Ball is really intimidating. His office hours are somewhat helpful. His ppt lectures are of no help, I learned most of the course by reading the textbook.
Chemistry is not an easy subject, that being said Dr. Ball's class is as easy as it is going to get. Attendance is not mandatory, he will give you the answers to the graded hwk before class. He does move very quickly and is so intelligent that his explanations can be complicated. If you have previous knowledge of chemistry this class is very doable
As a disclaimer, I'm terrible at chemistry, thus it would've been hard no matter what. Ball is so intelligent that he can't really dumb down his lectures, which isn't his fault, but unless you are very well versed in Chem terms you're going to struggle. He is very nice however and will definitely help you. He hosts study sessions for the big tests.
Dr. Ball is tough and awkward at first but after going to office hours a lot he will be nicer. The lab is easyboring for an AP Chem student. There are quizzes for a few labs but they are easy. Pre-labs are due on fridays before lab, and skill builders are online problems due sundays before lab. He is hard when it comes to lab work.
Toughest grader I have ever seen. He definitely plays favorites so if you are stuck in this class you better know how to brown nose. I asked him twice about every step in the labs and he still took off a bunch of points. I had an A in lecture and had a hard time with this lab. This lab had the more work than all of my other classes combined.
Dr. Ball understands you aren't taking Chem 101 bc you're interested in the subject. He has a quirky sense of humor that I liked. He does talk fast. The class is 60% review from HS chem. He can be a tough grader but he'll always say exactly what you did wrong. 6 quizzes, 15 homework sets (lowest dropped for both), 2 tests.
Some people don't like Dr. Ball, but I liked him. He doesn't make you stay after the allotted lab time; instead, he tells you that you can submit any unfinished lab work to him at a future date for full credit. He grades a little harshly but if you go in and talk to him, he'll basically tell you everything you need to put on your report for an A.
Ball is seriously the worst professor ever! His lectures are unclear, boring and long. He goes through 50 slides per class and does not stop to take questions or clear things up. He is rude and will practically laugh if you ask what he thinks is a dumb question. Worst professor at USD. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Dr. Ball is a very smart guy. Lectures are grueling but you can certainly learn. I really like the guy and respect him because he definitely knows how to teach. Chem isnt easy but I really liked the class.
Do not take Ball. The worst professor I've ever had. He was so unnecessarily picky with grading. Condescending and not helpful. Quizzes, and prelabs were hard. Lab practical was awful.
Dr. Ball is tough grader but a great professor. He adds humor to the lab and is always willing to help and reexplain to make procedures more clear. I disliked lab in general but enjoyed having him as a professor.
Dr. Ball was a pretty tough grader. He also wasn't always clear when giving lectures before lab. However, I discovered that he would practically give you answers to work if you went to his office hours. HIS OFFICE HOURS ARE A MUST! Personality-wise, Dr. Ball was pretty funny and would light-heartedly tease students which made the labs go by faster.
Ball is a funny guy although sometimes impatient with students. His prelab quizzes are difficult and he's an extremely picky grader when it comes to lab write ups. However he is helpful during office hours and when answering questions in lab, also he is fluid with deadlines for assignments which was very nice.
This was an extremely hard class. Do not take unless you really like chem and are a STEM major. Also, you should have previous chem experience because he skips a lot of stuff by saying of "You learned this in HS so I don't have to teach it" which is understandable but frustrating. '
Ball is a decent Professor. He moves quickly through the lecture and gives a lot of information. He was a little difficult to receive help from just because it felt like he expected you to know it and wasn't very welcoming to questions. He is funny though and let's you use a notecard on the tests! He also has great review sessions before exams!
Hilarious professor, made Chem 152 worth going to at 8 in the morning. He's more than happy to give you feedback/answer questions during office hours, as long as you're willing to go in and get help. He knows his stuff, and though he moves fast it's not an impossible class by any means.
He doesn't exactly teach you everything; you teach yourself about half the material. Fortunately, the class itself isn't too difficult, but could be easier with a better teacher. Exams aren't too hard, pretty parallel with his practice questions. I wouldn't pick to have him again, but would stick with him if I got assigned his class again.
Really nice person, lectures are too fast paced. You're going to have to self-teach yourself the material if you want a good grade.
One of the worst teachers I have ever had. Rushes through material and instruction and does not go out of his way to make sure you understand. Hard to ask questions without receiving a condescending answer back. Extremely hard grader and disorganized feedback.
he's a funny guy, but the lectures aren't as great as they could be. A lot of the material you will have to learn on your own. He says at the beginning that if you haven't taken chem in the last year it will be a tough course, and he really wasn't wrong. Very condescending when you go into ask a questions during office hours.
Expects you to come in to class knowing absolutely everything about the lab. Doesn't give very clear instructions, and isn't great when you ask for help either. The only saving grace was that he was very fluid with deadlines. However, unless you come in to class doing a lot of research, you won't really know what you are doing
Loved Dr. Ball. He is a tough grader, but if you go into office hours, he is very helpful. He speaks kind of quickly during lectures, but other than that he is a great guy. Super intelligent and resourceful. He is super funny too
Professor Ball is a solid professor. He is very knowledgeable about the content. He does go fast during lecture, so beware to take quick notes. He also lets you use a notecard on each test. He also drops the lowest quiz score. He tries to be relatable and is goofy and makes chemistry jokes. I enjoyed him.
Dr. Ball is hilarious. I had him for lab and lecture. He will help you if you go to office hours. I hadn't seen chem in 7 yrs and wasn't expecting to do as well as I did. Some students complained that he goes through lecture quickly but I liked his pace because it kept me attentive. Lab you need to be prepared but your in college, act like an adult
Cons: - Moves very quickly during lecture - Gets annoyed with questions during lecture (sometimes) - Online homework is annoying and takes up to an hour and a half to complete Pros: - Helpful during office hours - You can pass the class with a 60%(?) - Extra credit online assignments - Holds study sessions the weekend before a major exam
I saw Dr. Ball's low rating and thought I'dc chip in to tell you that I found him to be very helpful when I was in Chem 151 Lab last fall. His explanations were clear, he had some humor so his lectures weren't boring, and he helped us to learn the lab report format. I would definitely take him again for Lab.
This class was terrible. His tests were extremely hard and meant to fail to learn from them for the midterms and finals he told us. The questions on the midterms are the most difficult he can find and phrased super odd. Unless you have a strong backround in chemistry this class will be very difficult to pass. Although, he is a nice and funny guy.
This class was probably the most difficult of the semester. Lectures weren't the worst with his sense of humor. Don't be afraid to stop him and ask questions. Office hours helped a lot. Do test and quiz corrections, similar questions are usually on the final. You have to put a lot of work into this class. He's is slow on putting grades in so ask.
I went to his office hours and he legit told me "we did this in class check your notes", I had an excused absence due to illness and was going in to get help but he legit won't help you and he only uses 1/10 of the board so if you don't have a good seat just don't go to class because he writes so small and only writes on one corner of board.
I personally really liked Dr. Ball, He is a very smart man and taught the material well. you definitely have to show up to class though if you want to learn the info. He is socially awkward so can come off as condescending even though he doesn't mean it.
Ian Ball made my first semester of college miserable. He was a horrible professor, and laughed at me when I asked for help, saying there was "little hope for my grade". Not a science major anymore, thanks to this guy. Prime example of a weeder class. Only take this guy's class if you want to walk out crying with very low self esteem.
I think that Dr. Ball was a good professor for CHEM151. His lectures are very fast paced, but he will gladly stop or slow down for questions. Uses online homework, which I don't like, and quizzes aren't too bad. Use the review sessions as much as possible; those are the only reason I got an A. I didn't use the textbook but keep it nearby in case.
I actually learned a lot from Dr. Ball. I had him for 151 and Friday afternoon 152L. For lecture, he goes super fast to the point where notes are hard to take. Not the best for lecture. For lab, especially since our class was small, I really enjoyed it. He can be super picky, but he taught me a lot and it made me more comfortable in a future labs
DrBall was the worst professor I have ever taken at USD. He makes chemistry far harder than it needs to be. Gives the worst explanations ever, socially awkward. Creates exams so we can't finish. quizzes are so hard. Unless u know everything in chem you will fail with him. Have friends in other chem class and they are doing well. Worst teacher ever
I had Dr. Ball for lecture and lab and I actually liked having him. He moves fast and wants very specific lab reports so you have to put in a lot of work but itll pay off. homework is online so you dont need the textbook. he doesnt make eyecontact in class but is always willing to help in office hours, you can tell he wants you to succeed.
He is a wonderful guy. If you pay attention and class, do your homework, you will do great!
By no means an easy class, but Dr. Ball is a very thorough and organized teacher. Moves at a fast pace and requires a lot of work outside of class, but is helpful in office hours. You can score over 100% on tests and he drops 2 lowest quizzes, so if you commit to working hard you will succeed in his class.
He is smart and knowledgeable of chem but doesn't make learning easy or enjoyable. Goes too fast in lecture and makes you feel uncomfortable asking questions. Not welcoming in office hours. Chem 151 is problem solving heavy but he did not have us practice a single problem in class, only on our own. The lectures don't have anything to do with test.
Such a good professor for lab. He doesn't wait for you to turn in your lab to explain how to do something correctly when you might me going in the wrong direction. He really helped me learn and understand chemistry labs which was a challenge for me.
Ian Ball is by far the WORST professor I have ever had. He is incapable of making eye contact with students so he stares at the ceiling during lectures. He is unable to communicate concepts at a basic level. He assigns an absurd amount of homework so expect to be doing busywork until your fingers bleed.
Please don't take this professor. You won't know what he wants until you get your paper back. And you may not get it back until after you've done the next one or two papers. But by then, he has already marked off for something that you didn't know about because he didn't tell you how to do it right, regardless of the rubric. Pick a diff professor.
Amazing guy. Had him for 151 and 151L and took him for again 152L. Always willing to help you outside of class and has a great sense of humor. Yes his class is "hard" but that's because it's chemistry. You have to be able to keep up in lectures but tests never have anything you haven't covered in class. Make sure your lab reports meet his standards
Dr. Ball is a very interesting professor. He is very sarcastic but sometimes it can be funny and enjoyable during a 4 hour chem lab. He is pretty clear with his expectations however he is a very tough grader. He takes points off for the smallest details in the labs. He is very straight forward with what he says in class but overall, his lab was fun
Prof Ball is really lecture heavy, everything you learn is from his lectures and Mastering Chemistry homework. He moves quickly so take notes on your own time from the textbook. He is really specific on what he wants and he does take away points on the smallest things. You have to do your work if you want to pass and you do have to study.
Honestly a great prof. Really knows what hes talking about. Goes into depth in explaining during lecture, doesnt just read slides. Very animated! Tests worth 100+ points, so its possible to do well in his class. Quizzes not bad. take good notes. Hes a tough grader, and I struggled but managed. Didnt take AP Chem like others, did okay.
Find another professor. It is not worth dealing with his personal peeves and confusing/spontaneous demands for lab reports. Teaches like it's drudgery and there are definitely better options at USD for lab.
Prof. Ball is very challenging and he really makes students learn the material!
I would AVOID for chem lecture. on the other hand I did enjoy his lab. He is a tough grader but you learn a lot.
Dr. Ball honestly is a pretty decent chem professor. He talks really fast but I pay attention better with fast lectures so that worked for me. You do not have much time for the tests which can be really stressful but his test prep sessions are helpful.
Professor Ball is a good Professor because he loves what he does. Unfortunately, when hes explaining the material in class he often makes it way more confusing then it needs to be. I dont recommend taking his course as it is very challenging and hard to follow.
I would NOT take him for lecture, avoid at all costs. He is a great prof for lab though. He is pretty straight forward of what he wants and is nice at times. He is a bit intimidating and expects a lot from him students. That being said, the class is hard in general but he is OKAY for lab.
Professor Ball is genuinely the worst professor/teacher I've ever had. He somehow is always "running behind" in lecture, which is hilarious given that in reality, he's lecturing weeks ahead of the tests/quizzes on the given unit.
Do not take him for lectures and avoid him for lab. He goes too fast but yet is always behind. I put a great amount of effort and still felt like I was failing. Although I gave him a 2 because he is accessible for office hours and does give extensions. However, he can be passive-aggressive and expects you to know everything about chemistry.
I wouldn't say he's the worst professor I've ever had but he requires a lot of his students and has no extra credit and the test is totally different than what he lectures in the class
I absolutely loved this man. I loved him so much I got him for chem 152 lab. It is a class that requires you to put in the work, but I have no idea why he has such bad reviews. I thought he was fantastic. I would take every chem class with him if I could.
Ian Ball is fantastic. I wish he could teach every class I take. Honestly no joke. Obviously the class is "hard" because it's chemistry, but he gives you a lot of opportunities to do well. Knows what he is talking about. Makes amazing jokes. Absolutely wonderful. If you didn't enjoy the class maybe chemistry isn't for you.
Prof. Ball is pretty good, my biggest issue is that he lectures for 95% of the class time so taking notes and following along can feel super tedious and boring. But, he has good enthusiasm and knowledge.
I felt very overwhelmed in Professor Ball's class. ITS SO HARD!! It is all lecture-based and tests are wildly difficult. I studied ridiculously hard and do not feel that it really paid off. He is not a very personable professor. However, he is accessible in office hours so take advantage of study tools outside of class.
CHEM 151 is a hard class but Ball did a great job explaining the material to the class. He is a tough grader and there is a lot of homework but if you pay attention in class and take good notes and study hard, you will do just fine. Go to office hours.
Dr. Ball is insanely smart but expects his students to be on the same level. I can't emphasize enough how much of a hard grader he is, so get used to what he likes and dislikes FAST. Overall, he wants everyone to succeed but will not help if you don't put in the effort. Overall, I really like him but would definitely not take his class again.
Dr. Ball comes off scary at first but he is honestly hilarious. His sense of humor is probably not for everyone so you have to have thick skin but I thought he was a good prof. He responded to all my emails quickly and WILL help you but you have to advocate for yourself. He cares about his students, he just is hard to read.
I loved Prof Ball for Gen Chem 1! Definitely need to go to class and be able to take good notes in order to receive a good grade in the class (very lecture heavy). He's a great teacher but you need to put the work in to do well in the class. He's a funny/sarcastic guy but also clear in his lectures and I learned a lot in his class.
Professor Ball is a friendly and helpful professor but is extremely picky when grading pre-labs and labs. He wants everything to be precise, and the quizzes were challenging. If you could, take someone else for lab first, but don't worry too much if you have to take him.
This professor was not approachable at all and expected us to know everything. Lectures were way too fast paced and a very tough grader.
On the first day, he told my entire class that we would fail if we hadnt taken chemistry since sophomore year of high school (which was most of the class). He always made me feel stupid when i asked genuine questions too. I will admit he did have some fun dad jokes though.
Professor Ball is definitely very knowledgeable on the topic and, in my opinion, a good professor. The only thing is that he lectures fast and grades tough on his exams. However, if you take notes during class and reach out to him, like going to his office hours, he is very accommodating, and overall the course is very doable.
Don't know why he gets a bad rap here!! Very knowledgeable on the content. He explains things thoroughly in class and is a very laid back person. I encourage office hours for questions and free points on HW you missed the day before. Does review sessions before exams which help a lot too. The course is just hard, not the professor, so put time in.
Professor Ball's lectures go by very fast and the class is pretty hard overall. Studying outside of class to keep up with/understand topics is important. It's also important/helpful to go to his office hours to ask questions (when you have them) or go over homework problems.
Honestly really enjoyed his lab. He's very straightforward and doesn't waste time yapping, so we always get out early. Never overcomplicates things and is really fair with grading
take his lab for real
Great professor! He will always help if you need, and the class is graded on lots of things so it isn't that hard to do well.
Ian Ball is perhaps the worst professor I've ever had. He assumes we know all the scientific language and the basics of every single topic we go over as if this isn't a 100 level class. He fails to explain anything meaningful in class unless you actually read the entire textbook. If you didn't take AP Chem, you're basically done for.
Genuinely a super chill prof for lab. Always willing to answer questions and to clarify what he's looking for when grading. Highly recommend if you have past Chem knowledge, he's very to the point and you'll breeze through.
Very rude. Wants labs done to his specifications and he doesn't bother to write that in the instructions basically assumes you know what he wants. Also thinks he's so funny
Talks very fast in his lectures! Not helpful at all in office hours, he just talks to you and excepts you to know everything, I went in for clarification on a topic that took him one week to teach and he only took 5 min in office hours to explain to me. Very intimidating. DO. NOT. RECOMMEND.
Professor Ball is knowledgeable but his lectures move quickly. Staying on top of the material and utilizing resources like the textbook and office hours are key. I found unstuck AI and ChatGPT helpful for study prep. Overall, a challenging but manageable class with a fair grading system.
Professor Ball is a very fair and knowledgeable teacher. He is nice and funny, and I think his reviews are wrong. I am by no means good at chemistry or enjoy it, but he gives points on exams wherever he can and makes it very clear what will be on them. He shares his notes and is kind with grading.
I have met few people as condescending as Dr. Ball. Although very organized and a lightning-fast grader, Dr. Ball's people skills are severely lacking and come off as cold. Lectures cover a large amount of content and move at a very quick pace. Additionally, Dr. Ball assigns an unnecessary amount of homework, some of which is due on weekends.
you will not understand a single thing he is saying in class you have to teach it all to yourself its horrendous
Worst professor I have ever had. Talks so fast during lecture about topics that he then says will NOT be on exams. Tests that are so long nobody finished them. His grading scale makes it so that a 76 is a B- because nobody was passing so that is the only way I got a B-. Quiz, midterm, and final all in the same 2 weeks at the end of the semester.
He really is not that bad, chemistry is hard subject so you need to put in the work. the lectures contain some valuable information, so just go to class. use your resources and youll be fine. dont expect to breeze through with minimal effort
yes he's bad, but there are worse teachers out there. avoid him if you can but it's not the end of the world if you end up with him. i took ap chem so i thought it was fine, but my friends who had no background really struggled with him. doable if you put the effort into it.
He's obviously very knowledgeable and knows what he's talking about. But he has no business being a professor. He SPEEDS through the material, like he's trying to break some kind of record. And good luck with office hours. It feels like he would rather be doing anything else than help you. The most unapproachable professor I've ever met.
Before taking the course, I heard many bad things, but he turned out to be a great professor. He does teach at a pretty quick pace, but if you're ok with that, you will be fine in his class. Tests are hard, but they all have an extra credit opportunity, which is nice. Uses Mastering Chem for HW and textbook, assignments can be repetitive.
Came into the class without having taken a chemistry in 10 years. Material was straight-forward and explained very clearly. Actually paying attention during lectures and taking thorough notes are very important. Do all the hw and you'll be fine on test/quizzes. While he isn't a very personable professor, he is a very good lecturer and fair grader.
Speeds through material and it doesn't really stick. Doesn't look at the class while lecturing (super weird) and he makes u feel like such a burden for going to his office hours and is unnecessarily rude. His class got the job done but I wouldn't take again.
He is very knowledgeable. I think my soul is missing, and I'm now debating whether to continue with a STEM degree.
If you haven't taken chemistry in years or at all, do not take him! He will talk way too fast for you to understand anything. But I thought it was clear that he was enthusiastic about the topic, it was nice to have a notecard for the tests, and he makes terrible jokes that are somewhat funny. But, I think I only passed because I took AP Chem.
Bad at teaching and unfriendly. The course felt mostly self-taught. My AP Chem background helped a lot. He assigned too much online homework. and rushed the material in class. If he's your only option, take him. But if there are other options, choose a different professor.
I'm sure you've heard, but Dr. Ball is excellent for lab, just not so amazing for lecture. He has a very dry sense of humor which, so do I, so I enjoyed the lab. He graded pretty fairly and quizzes were well laid out. Definitely a recommendation for lab!
Unfortunately he likes to belittle people, that's the sad reality. He will find ways to make you feel small, incapable and in the wrong. He is nitpicky & harsh. But he is decent for lab and not a bad pick. Know he is an atrocious and unwelcoming lecture instructor who should be supportive & helpful to intro students especially as gen-chem director
if you have him, drop the class unless you are really smart and just took AP chem. all he does is lectures and he's so bad at lecturing and nobody understands what he is talking about. His first test was nothing like the quiz, but then the rest of the tests weren't too bad, but they were still hard. Our test averages were super low. DON'T TAKE!!
Very difficult at first, but after learning his teaching/testing style I scored better as the semester went on. Pretty boring lecturer. Grades very harshly against you -- he takes points off for everything. Tests are up to 110 points, only grades out of 100, yet class averages are still in the low 70s. It's doable, especially with prior knowledge.
Has his ups and downs. Personally, not a fan, makes you feel inferior when you ask questions. Definitely passionate about the subject and tries to be funny, however, very dry and unfunny.
I do not necessarily recommend him if you struggle in chem like I do. I am not good at it and jumping straight into his course was difficult, not impossible, but difficult. I recommend participating in class and asking questions because if you do not stop him he keeps going and you will be lost. Take advantage of the tutors!!
I cannot emphasize more, do not take this class. I struggled all semester long when I would go to tutoring, and study for days only to do awful on exams and quizzes. Teaches as if you already know the material. Even if this is the only chem class available, wait until the following semester for a different class. save yourself the stress!!
I took AP chem in high school so I was fine. Skipped class unless there was a quiz or test and did fine. Don't take if u haven't taken chem ever or aren't strong in it, he isn't the prof for u if that's the case.
DO NOT TAKE HIM. Especially if you did not come with a strong Chem background. He is a really tough grader,he takes pride in knowing his students are failing. His lectures are not helpful and he talks extremely fast.I died for a semester while taking his class and barely made it out by a miracle. If there no other teacher DO NOT take him just wait.
Professor Ball is a very hard professor. He doesn't seem interested in helping students learn. I don't even know how to describe it but I just wouldn't take a class with him again. He skims over important topics that show up on the exams. He doesn't prepare students well for exams
Dr. Ball has a rough reputation but chemistry is just not easy. If you struggle he will do his best to help you and it's not impossible to pass his class if you use all your resources. That being said, he is notoriously better to take for lab than for lecture.
He's not as bad as everyone makes it seem. He's a little impersonable but if you're doing this class just to get the core credit then its not a big deal. It helps to have a chem background for sure though.
Definitely so much better than people say!! Lectures were very clear and he explained difficult concepts well. Make sure to attend his review sessions and do the review worksheets. I had no chem background and this class really worked for me but if you're someone who doesn't learn well with lectures I wouldn't recommend, it's fully lecture based.
