Was course supervisor for CMNS 372 distance ed. Assignments were slow coming back and he didn't care to respond to emails. Seemed lazy, but hey, I would be too if it was possible.
The instructions for the assignments are not well defined. It is difficult to understand the link of how the course material relates to the assignments.
I also felt the assignments had vague instructions and were very poorly related to the course material. Material was uninteresting - moreso than I expected. If you have to choose between this and Ian's other dist. ed. course, CMNS 372, I'd recommend 372
lets just say i dropped it. the assignments are so flakey and the readings are ancient and boring.. who wants to read more than one chapter on copyrighting.. bleh! 372 was better, but still was not one of my fav cmns classes.
I am not sure who picks the teacher assistant for the course, but lets just say that evidently they were more concerned with essay foramt then essay content. Do not take the class unless you are destined to determine your tolerance to irrelevant course asignments to boring course readings.
Very boring. Lectures are scattered and vague. His TA's are useless. And he assigns a lot of reading, most of which is repeptitive.
One of the greatest human beings who ever walked the planet.
Ian is very passionate in this field of study and he takes great notes for you. however, he is very boring as a lecturer.
the TA's are horrible! I wont mention names but she was absolutely horrible, she was an english nazi, everyone i know had bad feedback on their papers and she suggest "english workshops" bleh! Ian is passionate, but veryyy boring. TA's are horrible.
BORING. VERY BORING.
The TA's were bad. I was wondering who chose the TA for this course. I was also wondering if this is a year 3 English course or a communication course.
Very enthusiastic about course material, Very knowledgable, Lectures a little funky
Ian seems like a good prof, however he has little to do with your grade. The TA was useless.. All he did was tell stories and use out of context analogies in explaining. Why do i pay over $500 a class to learn out of a $100 course wear book?
Seems like a nice guy but I didn't know what he was talking about half of the time in lectures. Kinda scattered. Lots of written work in this class.
Sometimes I wondered where he was going with his lecture and I couldn't see the forest through the trees, but after going over the notes, it all made sense. It was very enlightening and useful for everyday living. My T.A. was wonderful :).
Unhelpful.
Lectures were very scattered and unrelative to course material. Basically, they were pointless, and half the time a quarter of the class would leave in the middle of the lecture. TA's were very inexperienced and not helpful at all. It just really seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. Would not recommend this course.
Ian was so boring that by 3 weeks into the semester there was 1/10th the class he started with. The TA was funny with his accent but we never actually learned anythign about communications or writing as this is apparently a writing intensive course. I dont suggest it.
I had a fair TA so for me, the course is pretty easy...EXCEPT the super hard final! However, it isn't hard to get a B. Ian seems like a nice guy
I'm sure he means well, but his lectures were pretty much pointless. As I flipped through the lecture notes at the end of the semester (before throwing them out), they made more sense, but they're pretty much a waste of paper right 'til the end. Meera Nair is a great TA and is the only reason I passed this course (or even bothered staying at all).

The lecture is soooo boring. but my TA is quite nice and helpful. I wish my TA had taught the lecture instead of the prof.
He seems like a really nice guy. However, his lectures are beyond boring and rather pointless.
boring, can't keep class's attention, poor visuals
Lectures were BORING! Readings were almost unbearable. Iann seems like a nice enough guy, but he's pretty clueless when it comes to keeping a classes attention.
worst teacher i have ever had
Very kind prof.
semi-interesting class, super hard
Likes to "sprint" through material, claims that nothing is important, say oh you already know this...so rushes through it. Lots of info not enough time, doesnt bother to emphasize important points, so if you want to bother, you basically have to review the lecture tapes or have a really good TA. Pretty useless
Great prof, I think the reason he has been getting horrible ratings is that he likes to discuss many things in lecture and a lot of first years who take it don't understand how to process that. I'd suggest stop taking notes and just LISTEN. This man has many great things to say; always trying teach his students something about LIFE.
The worse class I ever had, Geeze
Literally the worst course ever. Prof is unclear in his lectures and boring at the same time. Lectures are all over the place and having them be 2 hours long is even worse. Avoid this course at all cost
The boriest class ever!!! He talks exactly the same in EVERY LECTURE ...like a tape recorder. Bascially, if u have HELEN as ur TA..u dont even need to attend lectures ...Overall, DONT TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS YOU REALLY NEED IT ...IF YOU REALLY DO..TAKE IT W/ SOME OTHER PROF.
He is an alright professor, however is TA Kate Millberry is the worst. She is rude and talks down to you which makes it very difficult to approach her for any clarification on an assignment. By far the worst experience with a TA ever at SFU. What good can a professor do when the TA marks and is in charge of everything. Avoid her at all costs.
The prof is terrible and to top if off he talks so quite. His lectures are boring and hard to understand. A teacher lecturing about interesting material should be an interesting person.
He is not as bad as people say. Most of the lengthy lecture powerpoints is for your own knowledge and use (which is a good thing) and you only need to spend time studying a small proportion (which is made clear). Basic generic introductory stuff. I barely did any readings or work and got an A-.
SAME COMMENT: "Likes to "sprint" through material, claims nothing is important, says oh you already know this...so rushes through it. His lectures are pretty interesting. He definitely knows his stuff. He's very into it, too. He encourages discussions (since we were in harbour center). Lots of writing, but..what do you expect in communications class?!
Oh man what a bad prof. This guy just keep talking and talking, you can't tell what's important. He just keeps putting up notes on the overhead and getting off topic. He talks almost like he's stoned when he lectures.
totally agree with it, kinda just keep talking. But good scale for the course outline, which final is worth for 25% and no midterms
Absolutely terrible I am only about 3 weeks into this class and I am already so angry I wish I could launch a formal complaint. He does not appear to understand citation as he wants it on everything including creative assignments and closed book midterms. Despite numerous emails he has not adequately responded appropriately to anything.
To paraphrase: "I'[ll] never let my school interfere with my education" - Twain. I am sad to realize that our education is being taken away from us. Because when given the opportunity to explore, we were penalized. All because we didn't cite the guide that we assumed was a given. My vigor for this class has been taken away. Thank you Prof. Chunn.
While there is no doubt that Professor Chunn is a really knowlegeable and passionate instructor, his lectures were somewhat disorganized, the marking of the essays and written assignments were beyond ridiculous, and students paid more attention to his sweater than to his course notes! MAJOR improvements need to be made!

i've never heard of having to cite readings in a closed book mid-term. what's that all about? This guy has a real thing for referencing the course reader even in creative writing. If you chose to take this class, make sure to cite everything you write or else.
He is a good prof. He gives out lots of good examples, and tries to make hard concept easy to understand. He is also very caring and kind when you actually talk to him. He is actually not bad at all.
Lectures were unfocussed.
Watch out. Assignments are vague at best. The prof is anal about citations. Cite everything.

boring class... monotone voice... if you have Xinren Li you're in trouble because you won't understand a word he's saying..
Ian is a nice guy and easy to approach for help, but he doesn't seem to provide that help very well. His lectures are the most boring of all lectures I'm taking this semester. There's one more week to go and I still feel as though I haven't learned anything. His videos are great though! His assignments are huge and tedious.
Chunn is seriously dull, despite his good intentions. I found it nearly impossible to pay attention to him for more than about a minute. His final exam is heinous.
Unclear, rambles on and on, can't stand listening to this guy's lectures, something about him that is so nerdy that makes me want to give him a wedgie. TA was Carolyn Liu(Lui?), horrible TA, brutal in her marking
He's a picky. For a professor he doesn't really use much thinking. Snow=SFU closed, how are we supposed to hand in assignments when the fax method does not work properly, does not allow emails. Just plain ridiculous.
Professor Chunn can be very confusing at times, going on tangents about literature and other topics. He seems like a nice guy though.
This class is helpful (for future cmns classes) and interesting but take it with another prof - higher marks guaranteed. As well, switch tutorials if you had Carolyn Liu as your TA, she's mean and brutal, not just her marking, her personality too!
I am a 3rd year student. I usually receive As and Bs. I have only received 3 or 4 classes in the C range and this is one of them. Not because it is difficult, but because the marking makes no sense, and the T.A., Sherry Yu, is incompetent. Ian Chunn is unclear, probably because his assignment guidelines, and his lecturing, are so convoluted. Y
I enjoy Ian's lectures and find his comments to the films amusing. Lots of interesting material to read. However, the T.A. is mean and unapproachable. Is this a 1st year course or a 3rd year? T.A. is demeaning to students and intimidating. Because of her I do not enjoy this course and find it more challenging. I am not the 1st to say this either!
I went to class just to watch him laugh at his own jokes. He's a very good TA, but a very hard marker...as long as you do EXACTLY what is on the assignments, you will get a good grade. Be warned, your hand can and WILL fall off after each lecture. He's a sweet guy & knows a lot about what he's teaching and his final was fair. Do your hmwrk!
This is not a hard course. Ian however makes it into something way more complicated than it needs to be, and i find him a little eccentric. DO NOT take Carolyn for your T.A, she is mean and an unfair marker, with no real clear marking scheme.
This class has A LOT of reading and writing. Reading overload. Lectures are not interesting. The professor doens't make the class interesting.
Lacks etiquette and very rude for a communication professor. He's probably an outcast among other student-oriented professors. Never replies emails, but when he does, he does so arrogantly in hope to make you feel bad. Chunn needs to get off his high horse and realize the needs of his students.
I must admit that he is talented. He can make the most interesting topic dull. He never sticks to the outline and tells us about too many other books to read "for fun". I reccommend taking a computer to class, then you can actaully get work done. I use the time to do other homework. I feel bad for his TA's.
So boring, wears the same sweater every lecture. Laughs at his own jokes which aren't funny. He makes communication sound like a science, and has the most complicated definitions for everything, i could've summed up what he said in like 2 words. make sure you attend tutorials because you will have no idea whats going on in lecture
Nice guy, but boring lectures. They are totally off topic, and he really makes the material sound like rocket science. I never came out of his lectures with any good notes. He's helpful when you need something.
love his sweaters-they manage to remind me of xmas ornaments, namely the 1 reason why i attend class. ive nvr been so motivated to facebook or msn or do my hwk until i attended his class. i thought i didnt need a laptop.WRONG.you need it for notes to save your hands & your sanity! his final was killer on the hands. and his TA's? iono wt to say
I totally disgree he is helpful when you need something, he never reply emails after the semester finished. Imagine if he is a customer service representative; the company will be closed within 3 days.
worst prof ever. boring as hell, do not sit down in his lecture without a DS or laptop. totally agree that he overcomplicates things and his lectures don't help at all. his TA's are the worst ever. mine barely speaks english - not to be **** - but come on. Nice sweaters, Cosby.
One of the worst lectures I have ever attended. Professor really likes communications but cannot teach. Extremely tangental, lectures rarely cover course material.
Course materials are less organized.
HE IS THE BEST PROF EVER! His jokes are hilarious and the content is very interesting!!!
Never again. Boring and unclear. Very specific when it comes to assignments. Has a passion for communications but cannot teach.
Lectures boring, vague, random, overcomplicates the most simple things. There were no key points or main ideas to the class- told us to only take notes on what we found 'interesting', so no clue what we will be tested on. For the amount of money we pay and work we put into his (useless) assignments students deserve much better than this.
He honestly means well and I liked him as a person but as a prof... he was bland and his jokes seemed rehearsed...and very proffessor-humor-ish. And if that is the worst I can say about him then he must not be THAT bad... right? Also in his defense... he has the most boring Communications class to teach. really.
He wore the same sweater to almost every class! It was blue and looked like it had dolphins on it, maybe. I took this in Fall 07 adn the slides had so many notes on them but they were pretty much useless. After the first few weeks of class, half the class never showed up until the last day before the final. But we got to watch movie clips, which wa
Boring no point of going to lectures nothing of them on exams!
This was the worst communications class i had ever taken. Ian is a nice guy, but the most interesting part of the lecture is seeing which crazy sweater he will wear next. He tends to ramble and get sidetracked with stories that bear no relevance very easily. The course is not hard, just be sure to attend tutorials and complete all assignments.
He is totally off topic. Makes irrelevant topics during class. I totally lost interested in the course because of his lack of enthusiasm
Can wander off, but generally interesting (and certainly interested in what he does!)
Avoid him at all cost. Strangely-worded papers and lengthy emails leave you in the dark. He TRIES to be helpful, but it just doesn't work out. Lots and lots of reading. Make sure your writing skill is solid when taking this course.
His lectures are useless. since cmns 130 is a writing course. You'll be fine as long as you do okay on those essays.
i found the topics very interesting. He sets lectures up well, however they aren't mandatory as lectures are recorded. I liked that he was very interested in teaching the course. Maybe a little keen with all the emails, but it was always a nice break in lecture when he would show a bunch of videos related to what he was talking about.
I took the distance ed version so he's just the course chair. Assignments were fair and there was no midterm. Final tested our broad understanding not specifics. Overall a good class, would recommend!
one of the best profs I ever had....thank you.
Awesome!
Awesome profs, very helpful. My favourite COMN prof)
