Good instructor, but very wordy. You should write everything down, his exams are "open book"-anything you can fit in the book. He says quizzes for the novels are "easy as long as you read the book." Make sure you know it well enough b/c he will ask some random questions. Includes reading for every class plus 2 novels.
Very nice teacher and pretty funny. Easy and straight forward and no homework what so ever. All assignments are in class, except for one which is pretty easy. Read one book, which was a really good book! Would forsure reccomend Cresswell for Eng 100
Brilliant teacher!! Extremely interesting, well knowledged, entertaining and actually manages to keep an 8:30 am class on monday fun. A slightly hard marker but is very helpful and definitely worth taking.
Funny guy. Gives a lot of background info on the texts. Lots of notes in class. Exams are open book/whatever you can fit in your book. Passionate about the subject. Favorite word is "bullox!"
I will totally recommend Ian for Engl 100, he is a very good teacher, you only have to read one book( no h/w), he is willing to help, and very funny :) his classes are nice, you will learn a lot from this guy! a bit tough marker, but mainly cares about grammer, it doesn't matter what bc you will write in your essay, its you ideas- his words!!Superb
very good teacher, his eng 100 was very interesting class and fun.
He made a dry subject really enjoyable. Very modern approach to teaching. Would take another one of his classes in a second.
Amazing amazing. This is probably the most interested in English I've ever been. Haha, he's great, fun, and easy to understand. I love him so much I'm taking a second course with him right now!!
Good and very ease teacher. Though he is a hard marker, but easy to pass. Very kind to International Students.
The bomb-digity. I have always been horrible in the usage of the English language, especially when it comes to analyzing and interpreting. When a professor uses modern lyrics from John Lennon instead of dated Shakespeare to teach you about language, you can't help it but learn.
He is by far the most dope prof i've had! Hes very helpful and is always willing to help after or before class. He can be easy if you listen in class and read the text! the first day of class, he uses lyrics from EMINEM to help you understand and analyze better! he's just amazing and I would totally take another one of his classes anytime!
Freakin great prof!! Awesome! I would take one of his classes again with no hesitation. A little bit of a hard marker but he makes it really interesting and fun. Definately go see him during his office hours if you need help or want some feedback he's extremely helpful and it helps make it clearer what he expects of you. Takes a very modern approac
Amazing teacher...Cares for his students...soo engaging...its a pleasure to attend his class...you won't wanna miss a second...and trust me u wont fall asleep...
Unreal teacher. The man made me want to attend class, with very in-depth conversation. I really enjoyed his class and would definitely take another one.
I dreaded English before Ian. Between his engaging body language and thought-provoking discussion sessions, however, I found it impossible to be bored. He encourages his students to voice their thoughts with no fear of being 'wrong'. I can't wait to take another of his classes!
great teacher. i was a little intimidated by him in the first class, but he turns out to be really nice. he made English 100 as interesting as possible. i'll definitely take more classes with him.
Great teacher! really helpful, and passionate about his subject! I've hate English since grade 8.. he was the only prof to actually make me enjoy English class..MAD PROPS!
Pure theatre, and you will be amazed at what you have learned. Clever, funny, helpful. He's slightly hard on the marks, but if you read, listen and attend class, you will be fine. The best instructor I have had - and very easy on the eye. Hot!
FREAKING AMAZING...actually best teacher ever.
i think the best teacher i've ever had. it does indeed feel like a theatre. he is very engaging and passionate about the subject. the level of thought in his class is so high that in the classes to come all i do is droop. very helpful and fair. if you put the effort in and he'll put in the As. Best class ever!!!
Incredible prof but be prepared for an unusual approach to ENGL 100. The focus is not on literature and more on the use of language (eg. political speeches, rhetoric, argument, etc.) Found him fascinating! Class itself has a very low workload. One short novel, one essay, two in-class essays and a group presentation.
A great professor. Ian's classes are fascinating. Don't be mislead by comments that imply the class is easy. Ian is a fair professor. If you do the required work and put in your best effort, you can expect a great mark.
Fabulous. Incredibly high-energy, unflappably friendly, passionate and knowledgable about his subjects. Helpful!!! And very fun.
Can't argue with what's been said. I've been studying at SFU for a year now and Ian is still the best prof I've ever had. Funny, helpful and super smart. I miss him badly :(
Well one little advice. If you don't write well (i.e. grammer, punchuation) then be ready for a ZERO. I spent 20hrs on an assignment with, to be fair, lots but tolerable grammer mistakes, he only graded firt paragraph on a 10 page essay and F me. Oh, and plus he graded the whole class in one night, how much effort he put in grading is questionable.
Ya pretty much what everyone has said. And you won't think this when you first meet him but he has an incredibly HOT personality. So so hot, it's ridiculous. Never been so attracted to a prof before ;). But you won't get an easy A. It's not as dreadful as other courses in putting the time required for an A since the course is very interesting, espe
Just sign me up for the next one. Never thought I'd be into English, but I am now. Quite a lot to read, but it's all good. Best course ever.
He is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. He is always so lively and passionate about English. I didn't even want to take English 100, but he makes it fun and worthwhile. I always look forward to going to his class.
A really great teacher! Knows what he is talking about. I would recommend to anyone.
Fantastic professor who really knows what he's talking about. Has a thing for grammar, and will lower your letter grade because of comma use. Amazing though, you'll definitely learn a lot from him.
I found a new love for English! Super engaging and a fair marker! You don't want to miss a class you will fall behind !
Difficult but extremely interesting class. I enjoyed it even though I did not like some of the course texts (novels). Had it's boring moments.
His bald head reflects his teaching abilities; he is very clear, smooth, and his effort is shining. His accent alone makes this class so good. There is quite a bit of reading so make sure you keep up with that and you'll excel!
He is just a professional. I really do not know what is he doing in cap uni. I mean he should go teach in Harvard. His class is NOT BORING, and I am not saying this because he is just fun. He is really good at teaching. Do not even think twice. Take his class.
AWESOME TEACHER
Great instructor. Always looked forward to the next class.
Great teacher, really interesting and fun. Hard course, textbook and assignments are challenging
Need participation but other than that great teacher. Learned a lot in this class.
Awesome teacher.
Such a great prof. Really interesting and easy to talk to.
Ian is the most incredible teacher I've ever had. He is beyond passionate about what he is doing. Do not hesitate to take his 100 course, its phenomenal. He is so insightful and intelligent and has a pleasing english accent! No homework very few assignments. I looked forward to every class. SIGN UP NOW.
Excellent professor!! Extremely knowledgeable and charismatic. He's absolutely professional, and is one of the rare professors at CapU who goes above and beyond to enrich your learning experience. Tough, but fair marker .. learn all you can from this man!! It's only a pity that he's teaching CapU when other unis can make better use of his skills.
I have never had a professor like Ian in my whole life. He is so knowledgable beside being fun. I had him twice and I look forward to take more courses with him in the future. His classes are not easy at all, specially for students whose first languge is not English. But the way he teaches motivates you to work hard. Hardly recommend him...
Wonderful teacher, very engaging and choose interesting course material to get you thinking
Wondered what all the fuss was about and now I know: Ian is a genius prof. Great class. Very funny at times and hugely informative.
Ian is an amazing prof. He's incredibly smart (which can sometimes be intimidating, but he's super nice) and pretty funny, too. Strong anti-electronic policy in class, and serious about grammar, but what do you expect out of an English class? You'll learn a lot, but you can't get away with putting in no effort.
Incredibly smart teacher! He will definitely keep you interested and entertained in class (especially with that British accent of his lol). One of my favourite profs ever!
Super rad prof, all he wants is for his students to succeed and do well. Great sense of humour. You need to really work for this class and he is more than happy to help!
THE BEST PROF EVER
Ian, quite clearly, has passion for what he does, and he conveys this through his lectures. He teaches efficient strategies for essay writing, and they helped me with the in class essays. Although, I still found them difficult. *Just make sure you pay attention, which is pretty easy with Ian, and you should do well enough.
Ian is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I learned so much in his class. He is intelligent, knowledgable, and charismatic. I'm hoping to take more classes with him in the near future
Ian is a great teacher who knows and understands the English language to a great extent. I found the class to be challenging, and the in class Essays difficult and hard to prepare for. If you struggled in high school english or other English courses, you will struggle in Ian's class.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. His rating on this site is a true reflection of his skill. Usually I come on here to give scathing reviews like most other people. Ian is good enough to make you take the time to come on here and do the exact opposite. He is truly a wizard among men and one of the only ppl who can make english class fun.
Ian is extremely intelligent and does great class lectures. You will not fall asleep in his class. If you are not passionate about the subject or struggled in high school, I suggest you do not take his class. Very hard marker.
I struggled greatly in high school english. Ian is the only professor i have ever met that manages to be stimulating, incept your mind with knowledge unconsciously, all while being caring intelligent and humorous. My confidence grew significantly in the academic world after taking two of his classes. Ian, if you're out there. I love you.
Ian's makes learning fun. You can tell he's really passionate about everything he says and definitely makes an effort to make things engaging. The only gripe is "textbook" you buy isn't used much at all. I think ESL students will find his class a bit difficult but I'm guessing that's what the book is for.
I struggle with english but he made it interesting. Not that much of a course load and a fair marker -- not an easy A but would defs take his courses again!
You can tell right away that Ian is a very intelligent person. However, his course was very difficult for me. The book that we studied was also a difficult read if you aren't educated enough on the topic.
The passion that Ian brought to the classroom made every single lecture extremely interesting. While participation and adequate writing skills are necessary to do well, Ian helps one develop these skills throughout the course. A very nice and funny instructor, I would take his class again any day!
I really enjoyed Ian's class. He made the boring structure aspect of writing very interesting by framing it with intruiging subjects and topics that were diverse (good for a required course bringing together students from all programs). He is funny and makes the class accessible. Thanks Ian :)
All I can say is that he is awesome. He is so nice and his classes are very very interesting. He is very helpful if you meet him in his office. Ian was my best prof ever.
Ian is amazing, such a nice guy!! His classes are so interesting. He knows what he is teaching. It is a challenging class for ESL students, but in my case, it was worth it to take ENGL100 with him. You will be required to read "Cambodia", which is a difficult book to understand, but Ian's lectures clarifies what this is about.
he is brilliant, the only bad thing about the course is that everything is worth so much. one essay is worth %25 of your mark and another %20. make sure to participate in class.
I thought I was going to hate taking eng100, but Ian made it a completely engaging experience. He used relevant examples and was not afraid to be edgy to keep students engaged. The quizzes are extremely easy, and there is next to no homework, but don't expect to be given free marks in the in-class essays or the research paper.
This is my second time taking a class with Ian, and he didn't disappoint. 103 was difficult at times, but Ian was always there to lend a helping hand. He has clear guidelines to getting good marks, and is very open minded. Above all, he's hilarious, leads very powerful and engaging lectures, and is an all round amazing instructor. Thanks, Ian :)
Ian is awesome. I have taken his class twice now (100 and 103). His lectures are always interesting and he doesn't sugar-coat anything. His in-class exams are pretty difficult but he is there for you if you have questions, so ASK!!! I would definitely take a class with him again. Best prof I've had so far.
I have never before found myself addicted to a class or a prof. You are hardly aware of it at the time, but after a few weeks you realize you are seeing things completely differently. I found this course quite life changing, but in a good way :) I miss him already ;)
he is awesome !
Amazing teacher, I enjoyed his lectures. Made me actually want to show up to class because he keeps it interesting. You need to show up to class and do your work to receive a good mark, but I felt like I wanted to do the work rather than I HAD to do the work. I feel like this class made me smarter!!
He is an amazing teacher. While the class I took was challenging at times, the skills he teaches you don't just apply to that specific class for that specific semester; they are skills you can apply to the rest of your university career. He makes things interesting and allows you to have your own ideas and interpretations. Highly recommend!
Kept it interesting. Hard at times but overall enjoyed the class.
Ian Cresswell is an engaging and enthusiastic professor who encourages students to break outside of their comfort zones and participate. Our very first ENG-100 class started with a debate, after all. He is very clear, concise, and challenges you--which makes the course interesting and enjoyable. I would describe his marking style as firm but fair.
Ian is legit one of the best teachers I've ever had! He does make you work, but it's all useful things that you need to learn. I would 100% take one of his classes again!
I have taken a class before with Ian (ENG 103) and honestly, he is still the best and most lovely english prof! he gives you the midterm questions in advance and you can put as many notes as you want in the book the test is on! also, he looks scary but actually a very nice and caring person. Can be tough, but if you make the effort, it's an easyB+
I learned so much more about essay writing and building an argument and rhetoric than i did in all my 5 years in highschool english honors. Though I disagree with him on some his beliefs about media, that didnt get in the way of his insightful and interesting lectures. The stuff I learned in this class I'm gonna use for years later.
Really enthusiastic, and very approachable. His lectures are interesting and he is very understanding if english isn't your strong suit. Not an easy A but a fairly easy B+. Would definitely recommend.
I really enjoyed Ian's class. First impression was that he was a hardass but after a few classes, it's pretty obvious he does care about how well the class is doing. He's entertaining to listen to and as long as you put in the work, you'll pass. My advice is not to be afraid to approach him during his office hours, he's happy to help!
If you genuinely care about the course, he will help you, don't be discouraged to reach out to him for help. He is very professional so people take him as cold but he is caring and very organized. You will learn every device in the best memorable way. He has genius strategy to teach students in all ages. I enjoyed his class. don't give up.
THE BEST
Ian gave amazing lectures and was very knowledgeable. He is hilarious and cares about his students. I went to his office hours and he was very helpful and provided great feedback. The course did not have very much homework. All you have to do is read a short novel and prepare for some easy quizzes and the in class essays.
Very witty and knowledgeable. Made a boring class easy to wake up for.
Worst English teacher I ever had. Very arrogant.
Genius prof. I was dreading this class as I had to do it, but ian made it interesting and even fun. Very friendly and approachable once you get to know him.
Ian is amazing. He is super clear about his expectations and makes class interesting. He's got a British accent so that always helps. He is very into rhetorics, so be prepared to grasp that concept. I wish he taught all of my classes honestly.
Great instructor. Exceptional teaching methods. Not to mention, that classy British accent. Even though my performance wasn't that great, still I learnt a lot from him. He wants you to clear the course & gives worthy feedback. I regret the days I wasn't able to attend the class and feel thankful when I was. He'll improve ur perspective & writing.
Ian is a really great English prof. His lectures were very detailed and were easy to follow along because of examples and a bit of participation. Make sure you read the book early and not the night before. You need to know some detailed info for the quiz and essay. Group project was simple, but make sure it's entertaining.
Horrible
Arguably the best teacher I've ever had.
There's a couple minor quizzes, a couple in-class essays, and a final research paper, and a last class presentation. No homework. Ian's pretty enjoyable to have as a lecturer, and was pretty good at getting material across. No electronics are allowed to be used in class (e.g. laptop, phone, etc.). Start reading the book early.
Makes you enjoy English. The text was something I wouldn't touch with a meter long pole but the course was thoroughly enjoyable. Made me contemplate switching to Arts. There are presentations and papers so but he schedules it well, giving one lecture for checking drafts.
He is very very passionate about English and great for someone that is equally interested in English. However, his level of passion was too intense for me.
Very difficult marker and attendance is mandatory to do well especially cause there's no moodle. If you do not like in-class essays and presentations do not take this class.
Arguably one of the best prof's i have ever had. He is very passionate and as a past lawyer he is very clear about getting his point across. Homework given is very simple and assignments are very interesting. His class and energy builds on participation so be sure to communicate or it will be so very dry. Almost switched my major because of him
He is an awesome Instructor. He teaches each subject through a metaphor or an example. Be prepared for lots of writing. He is fair and teaches well. I learned a lot from him. He was professional and reachable when you needed help. I would take another class with him.
Ian is the best English teacher I have had!! He makes any subject o interesting that I am never distracted in his class not even for a second!! He is amazing!!!
I have always dreaded English classes and was not excited with having to take a university-level course, but Ian made it very interesting and even sparked some passion for it within me. You will get a lot out of the lectures. The reading material is very interesting and Ian gets his point across well. Leaves you thinking after you leave the room
Ian is the BEST English professor I've ever had (and I've taken three English courses prior). I won't lie- he's not an easy marker and he is a little intimidating, but he's very kind, funny, and really drills into you what you need to know. You are what you make of this class, so stay motivated! Listen to his tips and you'll succeed! Love that guy!
I normally despise English so much, but I actually really enjoyed his class and had lots of takeaways from it. It's refreshing to have a prof that knows his stuff and doesn't just read lectures to you that you could read yourself at home. He's very clear on what he expects for assignments and if you go to class and listen you'll do well!
He is a very hard teacher if you dont want to apply yourself. Really makes you work for it. Even though hes hard, you learn a lot from his class like useful skills for the future. A lot of quizzes and essays just saying.. if you participate in class he will like you!
Had Ian for my first English class at capilano so keep that in mind but I found the class helpful and Ian really does care. He is quite tough but will be of help if you ask for it.
He is a tough grader. Not an easy task to get an average score on his assignments. Instructors are clear, but his expectations are high! Sends recorded lectures which are sometimes very interesting sometimes full of stuff that is not even necessary. I think, it would have been easier if it was not online.
Changes assignments a lot, Not clear
Best experience I had online last term. The videos are really good. I was actually looking froward to them. Will take another course with Ian when I can.
Ian is very charming and intelligent. His classes are interesting and his accent is lovely. However, he is a very tough grader and it is nearly impossible to do well on his assignments. It is important to mention that he only assigns a few assignments for the term which are each worth a lot so if you do bad on even one assignment, you're screwed.
This was a very interesting course. The videos were detailed and extremely helpful. Ian is a natural in front of camera - very engaging. I will do another course with him if I can.
not at all good
Ian was a very understanding professor. I had a very overwhelming semester so I asked him for extensions on some of the projects and he understood my request with the valid reasons I gave him. His lectures are him talking about his passion and understanding of a piece of writing. For the writing segment of this course, as long as you can deliver ea
won't take this professor again
If you like online, this is great. The videos are really good and the texts are interesting to read. I didn't think I needed this course, but I ended up learning a lot. I signed up to take ENGL 103 with Ian.
Too philosophical. Didn’t feel I learnt anything about literature per se. Got stuck taking his course He’s NOT a psychologist Needs to stay away from psychology aspects. Memories - how we get it/Keep it/Retrieve it. Seems like he should be teaching higher levels of Engl-not 2nd intro courses Avoid if possible Gets rude if ask too many questions
Do really hard checking. Do not give marks
A lot of what he would say in his video uploads was pointless or irrelevant to what we were learning or what the focus of the lesson was SUPPOSED to be. 90% of our mark was from papers that we had to do (3 @ 25%, 1 @ 15%), in which he gave 3 of them all at the end of the year due within a period of 4 days. It was super unfair.
Professor Ian Cresswell has been, by far, my favourite English prof. ever. Prior to his course, I never enjoyed English, thinking it was a waste of time. Professor Cresswell revived a love for reading, writing, and deep analysis of some of my favourite works. Amazing professor, I could go on forever. 10/10, would take again.
Very lecture heavy!
Assigns about 75% of the grade to be due within the last week of course. Lectures are outdated and long tangets that don't help much with the content. And if you ever have to read Cambodia for a class in 2023.... run.
I always dread taking English courses but Ian made this online class very enjoyable. He is funny and explains concepts extremely well. His assignments were fair and he always gave amazing feedback. I highly recommend taking a course with him if you have the chance.
Professor Ian's class was a mixed bag - lectures could drag on, but Unstuck ai and the textbook helped me stay on top of the work. Overall, a challenging yet rewarding course.
