Handed in same paper 2 years. One year it was an A paper the next it was a C
Awesome Professor.
Very good professor. Very clear with his teaching
best prof i've had, really clear in his lectures, exam is hard
His marking is quite arbitrary, almost like he pulls numbers from a hat.
Great prof
excellent prof, clear and walks through examples. Tests are a little difficult.
excellent prof, clear and walks through examples. Tests are a little difficult.
What examples? Tests are too short. Very unprepared. Explanations good, but us the math!
I think he is a great prof. He explains things thuroughly and uses large but hillarious words. Uses the term "this is highly tangental" almost every class. His tests however are fairly difficult producing a very low class avg.
Ian is entertaining, but sometimes his socialist antics ruin the class.
Ian is by far the best prof I've at at u of m. So what if he has a distinct ideology --he doesnt push it on the clas and he examines every issue from MANY perspectives.
awesome class, hilarious commentary
Very good professor.Clear proof!
Definitly the best prof I've ever had. I picked my major based on his class. I've taken 2 courses with him and they were both very interesting and entertaining.
he's awesome. the best prof. he's sooo funny. and you can access him anytime in class, office or even at home. i wish all profs are like him.
funny prof, extremely clear explanations of theories. one of the best prof's i've had. tests are not too difficult if study guides are used, some questions are drawn from there.
Awesome prof. Easily one of the best I have ever had. Funny, interesting and easy to listen to, clear enough that if you attend classes, you won't have to do much reading. Highly recommend this prof. and this course.
Funniest/best professor ever. He provides different perspectives on everything. He always gives criticisms of different ideologies, even his own. Tests can be hard though. Overall, he's "highly fantastic".
Super hot! His hottness was sometimes distracting. Funny, smart guy. A hard marker though, sometimes test questions were unclear, open to interpretation. Overall great. Ohh, Maybe once I graduate I can go out with him!
tough marker and confusing lectures - he seems like he is always trying to impress students. too bad he always let the idiots in the front make rude comments
he's a very good prof with great lecture notes and easy to understand...but he's also made me now hate the work "conceivably" which he uses in pretty much every single sentence!! All in all though...good prof!
I had him for half the year. His tests were harder, but i got better marks than the previous term mostly because his lectures are clear and thorough. Hes loud and proud. He will tell you what he wants you to know and stress it if its really important. He's also easy to find outside of class for help.

Great teacher. One of the best. Passionate, clear, concise and to the point. Knows how to convey the material in a manner such that even morons can understand difficult concepts. Always willing to help. His office door is open at all times. Hard marker but fair. Delivers and expects the best. A+++
Awesome prof!
nice prof ever.
Amazing prof!!!!!!!!! He is funny, smart, concise, and actualy cares that the students do good in his class. He makes economics so easy, and cuts all the useless crap out that other profs still teach. Although the assignment is faily difficult.
this prof is sooo great. he is really funny and knows how to teach. he makes the class interesting and actually cares if people in the class understand the material before he moves on to something new. the best part of this prof by far, of course, is that he is totally THE hottest professor that you will ever have. oh my.....so very very hot!!
His tests are not easy, that's for sure. His lectures are very structured and taking notes is easy. But prepare to study hard, especially for the final exam. This year it was very difficult.
the guy is nice.but don't let that fool you,he is stealth and will zap ur academic tagets.
this prof is the best i have ever had he gives great notes and gives humorous lectures.
Awesome Prof! Is interesting, clear, to the point, and really funny! Encourages questions and actually takes the time to make sure we get it before he moves on. Definitly the best prof I've had so far!
Excellent prof ... great notes, clear, funny, knowledgable, tests are hard but fair... study the examples he gives you... Take any class you can with this guy!!!
Don't recommend to international students.
i don't see the fuss about this guy,he is the most miserly marker i have ever encountered ,you think you are smart? take his class you will get whacked by hard marking and doctored marks
excellent prof . . . powerpoint notes are very clear . . . he is very helpful and will spend as much time as he needs to to ensure that everyone understands . . . very organized . . . tests are very easy if you study for them
He is supposed to be in the department of philosophy. He is a friendly lecturer.
very good prof, fully understandable and keeps it interesting!
Absolutely fantastic. Well prepared and organized. Loves to teach and committed to students. Tests ARE hard, but it makes you want to study and really learn the material, and after all, that IS what we're here for. Articles he uses are great, although we skipped nearly half of them. Focus on his notes for exams, and the exam prep class.
Best prof ever. Learned a lot. Fair grader. Don't miss this class!

I. Hudson is one of the top few professors I have encountered at the U of M. When teaching about controversial subject matter he presents both sides of the argument and he manages to prove his point without shoving it down your throat. Hudson puts a lot of energy and humour into his lectures which keep them very interesting. N.B. Study a lot.
Very good prof, extremely clear, extremely good lectures. He keeps the material constantly interesting and engages the class. His test are tough though.
This class is supposed to be easy. Don't get me wrong, he's an excellent professor but the test are just too complicated compared to other professors' tests. If you want a good mark, go with another professor. If you want a good prof, then stick with this guy.
this prof is sooo great. he is really funny and knows how to teach. he makes the class interesting and actually cares if people in the class understand the material before he moves on to something new. the best part of this prof by far, of course, is that he is totally THE hottest professor that you will ever have. oh my.....so very very hot!! but

very clear but hard tests
great prof so interresting, helpful, clear, he is so funny, tests are a little hard, seminar clases are fun
Ian Hudson is an awesome professor. Energetic and engaging, he makes you want to show up to class. His class is very interactive, so students feel encouraged to participate: and, he'll never embarass you if you don't know the right answer. Even though the tests are more challenging, it is worth it. Great individual rapport with students...
he may be way more lively in lectures than lots of the other econ profs, but its really not worth it. His tests are much harder. He is really helpful tho, and gives you lots of resources to look up. But if you're looking to just get this credit easily and aren't that interested, then take it with someone else.
Ian is a fabulous prof - one of the best I've had in my entire 5 year "career" at the U of M. He is passionate about his subject matter and his students and wants to make sure that you succeed. Make sure you do your readings, pay attention, attend class and you'll do fine. If not, he'll help you without any hesitation.
good teacher
he is wonderful professor!very loud voice, clear english, very nice personality,Just like others said,"the reason I go to class". extremely helpful,If you are interesting in Economic.this is your choice.because he can answer any question about economic. What you need to do is just go to the lecture, listen to him,and you will be fine in the test.
Extremely good prof; he's knowledgeable and entertaining. His explanations are far clearer than the textbook's.
I really enjoyed this class. He was funny and kept it very relevant and interesting. The only hitch is that he is very particular about grading. Not an easy course to get an A in.
Great prof. I really enjoyed his class - he made it interesting. Go to class and listen and you'll do fine.
BEST TEACHER I've ever had - I love this guy, I wish I could take more of his classes!
Hated Econ, but the teacher was okay. He wanted you to understand and always responded if I emailed him questions. I had a hard time with the course, but I don't think it was his fault.
Great prof. Easy to approach after class. Very good notes. Clear in class. Everything tested on was fair. There weren't any surprises.
One of my favourite profs at the U of M, wish I could take more courses with him. Course is well prepared, explanations are excellent, is great at giving feedback, is very approachable. Can't think of another instructor I'd recommend more. As with any class, go to it, participate, do the readings, make an effort, and you'll do well.
Best professor at the U of M. Great lectures, easy-to-follow explanations, brilliant insights. Tough marker, especially on essays, but he gives useful feedback. Tests can be long, so be prepared. Highly recommended.
Awesome young prof who knew the subject material and actually made an effort to know your name! Used power point and was very fair. He even gave out his home phone number. Great sense of humor and loves sports too.
Worst teacher ever seen.Don't waste time on sample questions before test, they useless. I've take over 10 Econ classes,he's the worst.
It's fun to be Chinese and not understand anything but what your translating computer tells you. But hey, studying the sample exams really helped me get my D.
Amazing amazing prof. He was the reason I went into economics. He made the material very interesting and his tests were all fair. I did well in the course even though I didn't work as hard as I should have.
This guy is brutal.
I'll sum this guy up in a word: Convincing. You'll think he cares about you, but the reality is he was trying to impress you for that nice grade and is actually almost 100% sarcastic, unrealistic, and unimpressed with 95% of the students he teaches. I don't see any compassion for students, you need to be his underling to succeed, which isnt practicl
Great professor. He is more difficult, but I'd rather this and get something from the class then have an easy class and get nothing. Attendance is mandatory, if you attend class and pay attention, you'll pass otherwise you are doomed to fail.
he is a hardmarker, everyone says that. but he is a good teacher. he is helpful when you have questions.
hard. very very hard. just because you write things close to relevant doesnt earn you marks.
Course material is very interesting and worth coming to class. Power point notes are very well prepared. Be careful with midterms and tests his marking is extremely picky and getting full marks on questions will literally require you to record his lectures.
A very interesting prof that is worth going to class for and I would take more courses with him. Although it will be up to you to make sure all explanations are understandable so visit him for clarification and it will be well worth the effort.
Great professor! Very intelligent and knowledgable about his subject. His lectures are so interesting, that I could not wait until the next one. Ready to help if you have any questions. There're no 'surprises' at the exam if you studied the material and listened to his lectures. Overall, one of the best professors so far at UofM. Highly recommended
Great prof! Lectures were very interesting and he did a great job explaining difficult concepts. Highly recommend him as a prof.
The first few lectures in his class were interesting. As you get further into the class, he seems to start caring less and less about you. He throws whatever material at you and expects you to understand. He doesn't post any of his lectures online so you have to go to class. I hated the midterms. The M/C question all seem to share the same answer!!
Very good prof, very clear, funny and very organized. But the tests and exams are hard, usually he does a combination of multiple choice and long answer. I would recommend this prof! Very good, even if the course is very hard.
Very, very good prof. Always takes time to explain anything in class and will often explain it in another matter if one student does not understand. Organized, crystal clear and funny. Tests are often harder than the practice questions provided, so studying and understanding of concepts is a must (but no 'surprises').
Super good prof, only thing was that he welcomed and answered so many stupid questions, which slowed the pace of the class. If you pay attention to lectures you should have no problem with the exams.
Awesomeeeee
Awesome professor!Absolutely loved the class. His lectures are entertaining, and engaging!Greatly enjoyed taking the class with him!
He's the best as far as I'm concerned. He explains explicitly. his lectures are engaging and exciting. Only thing is that he spends most of the time in class answering redundant questions, as such we tend not to cover a lot in one class.
Amazing economics professor, very engaging and interesting teaching style. His tests are relatively difficult and require a lot of prep. But overall a very enjoyable class and professor. Highly recommended!
Helpful and nice
GREATEST teacher ever!
one of the best profs I've ever had! very kind, helpful and gentle. always answer with a smile. I strongly recommend him.
AWESOME prof! Super friendly and knows his stuff. Highly recommended!
Great Prof that really engages with his class and answers any questions that might come up. Going to class is a must, he will not post notes online. Marks hard, you better be precise.
Very nice and great prof!!!!!!!
One of the best profs I've had so far! It's great to see a professor who is so passionate about his work. His classes soon became the highlight of my week (and not just because he's super cute).
Teaching style is really engaging with the class. His exams were 2 questions , so it was rather overwhelming studying for this tests, but he makes study notes for exams. He's awesome
Best prof I've had. Intelligent and has well prepared lectures that make sense. Respectful to all students and always willing to help. Very tough marker though. Expects you to know your stuff really well. Midterm and final are short answer and there's always one specific thing he's looking for. Notes only offered in class. Tough, but learned a ton.
MUST go to class and take good notes!!! If anything is unclear, ask for help!!! It's his first time teaching this class, so exam format may change (2 midterms 30% each; final 40%). If you can't answer the practice exam questions you WILL fail. Midterm format: 2 questions worth 15% each. All exams were long answer.
He doesn't post any notes online, so you have to take them during class (Powerpoint). He explains concepts and theories thoroughly. He's funny and easy to pay attention to. Didn't really need to textbook, but it was of great help if I needed it. I got below the grade-cutoff for an A, but still got one, which mean he grades on a curve
He's hands down the best professor I've ever had. Lectures are wonderful, and he is so clear and concise when delivering the material. His 50 min lectures flew by, I wished they were longer. Need to study a lot for his tests, but if you do then you will do well. I found he was a bit of a tough grader on the essay, but I still got an A in the course
Amazing prof. Knew nothing about Economics and he made this class so interesting. Very clear and goes through everything so well. Tells you exactly what will be on the tests. So easy. Loved going to class.
A wonderful professor - never have to worry about rushing to take notes, he clearly and slowly explains all course concepts in class. If you take good in-class notes based on what he says, you will have clear study material for tests. This was my first Econ class and the 50 min flew by - going to class was a pleasure, not a chore.
Super engaging prof who is very clear about what is expected on tests. Makes what could be a boring subject pretty interesting and is usually available for extra help if you need
Ian is a friendly prof, a little over done, but keeps lectures somewhat interesting. Online assignments are a little obscure compared to lectures, which can be frustrating. He has a pet peeve about participation.
He is one of the best teacher i have ever seen. Both midterm and final is easy if you attend all the classes and know the concept well. he wont post the class note on UM learn, so you have to attend to every class.
Lectures were very clear and you would think you understood everything until it came to the test. Tests were very hard and very few questions (15 questions worth 25% of final grade). The final was worth 44% but only had 30 multiple choice questions, very hard to get a good grade. He also didn't post any slides online so attendance was mandatory.
His lectures are amazing ! Easy A if you put it some effort !
Really enthusiastic about what he's teaching.
Great prof. Actually cares about the lectures and the course material. He'll answer any question you want. Very fair exams, take down class notes. If you know the class notes, the exams are very fair. Excellent prof
He was very bad, his lectures dont make sense he doesn't post them online. He rambles about lots of unimportant stuff, most of the imformation in lectures isn't on tests . All I am say is be prepared to work for your grades becuase this guy will not give you partial marks and you better hope you can understand what he is saying or you will fail.
If you think this guy is a difficult prof, you are in for a rude awakening at Uni. Attendance is mandatory as lecture slides are not posted, but he gives more than enough time to copy them word for word. Required reading/textbook was not at all necessary. Check online, as his past exams are posted and are word for word what you will see. Easy A.
One of the best prof at UofM. His lectures are very clear but he doesnt post his lecture slides online. Very tough marker but if you study hard, youll be fine. Must attend all his lectures and study hard to get an A.
Possibly one of the best professors U of M has to offer. Lectures are extremely well-conducted, concepts are explained thoroughly, and he always makes sure that students have a chance to ask questions. Very accommodating if you need to ask questions outside of class. Inspirational because you can tell he cares about the material he's communicating.
Fantastic prof! He always made sure to explain all possible sides of the issues he discussed, and genuinely cared about his students' perspectives on them as well. If anything was unclear, he would take the time to explain it over again. Take careful notes and study carefully and you'll be fine. Would highly recommend taking any course of his!!
Fav prof so far, Ian is ferda.
Show up or you won't pass, nothing is posted on UMLearn. Very interesting and easy to understand the material with lots of examples. He's a great and caring prof. Don't mess up the paper though it's worth 35%.
Ian is my favourite prof at the u of m. 50 minute lectures lasted what seemed like 5 minutes due to his engaging teaching style and hilarious comments - don't be afraid to ask questions! There's little to no readings, but don't be fooled, he is a very tough grader (esp on papers). Make sure you take notes during the lectures and you should be OK.
Outstanding prof!! Interesting lectures, you can tell he's interested in what he teaches. Easy to ask questions in class, and he's totally willing to go back and re explain concepts. Easy A if you pay attention. I didn't really use the textbook, but it wouldn't hurt to read it. He wrote part of it. WARNING: no homework, just tests.
At first I was intimidated to take this class because he's the department head, thought he would be very strict and bland, but he's very approachable, open to questions, and outgoing . One thing about taking a class with him is don't slack off! he doesn't believe in posting lectures online. He is a tough grader, everything has to be accurate
Best prof I've had so far. Took his Social Justice class first semester, and I absolutely loved going to every single lecture. He's interesting, so nice, and you can tell that he cares about the content. Great at fostering conversations and participation. Graded by 2 midterms and a final, and the notes aren't available outside class, so take notes!
I needed GPE1700 for my degree program, but Professor Hudson made me love this class more than I expected to. His lectures are clear and interesting, but make sure to listen attentively as he doesnt post notes online. Although, he is pretty accessible outside of class and he makes sure students understand the content.
Hudson gives some of the best/most interesting lectures that are honestly very enjoyable to sit through. There was never much homework but be aware that the marking of tests can be harsh. The day before the final, he set aside office time for students to ask last minute questions which was very considerate. Overall, he is a very good prof.
He clicks his pen A LOT during the Zoom lecture. It's really distracting and super annoying.
Never seen a professor like him. He's too harsh to mark the paper and exams. Gave tons of questions to solve in really short time. Makes the finals unimaginable hard. Doesn't want student to get a good grade
I thought he was a very good prof. You NEED to attend lectures and take notes on basically exactly what he says because that is 90% of what he tests on. His exams are all application-based. He does break down stuff very well in class. Again, do NOT skip class. Use his skeleton slides as a guide and add your own notes to them.
ÝHe is a tough marker. He expects you to write exactly what he wants to hear in the exam paper otherwise he won't mark your answers. Lots of applications questions and doesn't even bother to give an average of C to all the students in the class. He thinks that's what a class should look like
The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because I think he spends too much time recapping previous lectures. Sometimes a quarter of the class is just repeating last classes points, which can be boring if you understood the material first time around, (which you will, because his explanation of concepts are so thorough and captivating!).
Very great lectures, and is very good and clearly explaining things. Is a very tough marker and doesn't give much time on exams, so even if you understand everything in the lectures, still be extra cautious while taking the exams. Not much homework at all and he is an overall very nice and caring guy.
I loved Professor Hudson's class! It was very engaging and discussion oriented. He was great at explaining concepts and checking for understanding. He was also really good at involving the class in the discussion. He only tests on lecture material and select notes provided. Be prepared to come to every class and take good notes.
Good prof! Very understanding with the strike issue and ensured that we wouldn't get the short end of the deal.
Very very tough grader never ever will take his class again.
Heavy tester with tough grades
Worst professor ever
Great prof, shows he is very passionate about economics and caring towards students. Very understanding and willing to answer any questions thoughtfully. tests are not a surprise, if you listen in class and prepare, you will do fine.
One of the worst professors. He tries to be friendly but is very arrogant and rude. His top hat quizzes' questions don't appear in exams. Makes the course over complicated and wants you to know many irrelevant out-of-syllabus topics. Very Harsh grader, and doesn't know how to evaluate students. Knows the subject but does not know how to teach it.
Best class ever! So interesting and he was super helpful answering questions always. Pretty heavy marker, but sticks very closely to his rubrics. Had very clear lectures and was always entertaining. The textbook was cheap which was appreciated but not necessary for me. The content in the course was super interesting and varied a lot.
His lectures were really interesting and not super intense. Overall he was a great prof but just a tough marker. I would still recommend taking the course!
Ian is the best prof I've had in 5 years at uofm. He is engaging, caring, clear and makes lectures interesting. He really cares about making sure topics are understood. Make sure to attend all class' as midterms and tests are based on his notes from class, he won't post them. Highly recommend
this professor is great learn what he teaches and you are good.
Overall not a bad prof, the course material is just boring. the course moved slow, but there were long weekly assignments for participation marks (website was extra $) which made the class a lot of work. fairly tough for a first year course. Very engaging lectures and ATTENDANCE IS TAKEN. Really nice prof just not my preferred teaching methods.
Gives amazing lectures, but will go off on tangents depending on what students ask. Very hard marker, points taken away if keywords aren't used even if you explain the concept. PackBack used for weekly participation, I think it's unfair that those who gave little effort got the same mark as those who did. iClicker also used, attendance is taken.
He was a very intelligent prof who knew a lot about the subjects at hand and could clearly answer any questions thrown his way, and the lectures were interactive and useful. I believe GPE1700 is generally easy but his amazing ability to explain concepts made it so much easier, I'll definitely look for his name in the future when picking classes
You do not need the textbook as test are all based on lectures. While attendance isn't mandatory you will fail if you do not attend. To succeed pay attention to material and his explanation of such, take good notes, and memorize topics before tests. Class is interesting and not too difficult, would take future classes with him
Very engaging and good at explaining course material. Easy to get an A by just attending lectures and minimal studying. Content was also interesting and fun to learn. Only complaint would be the weekly discussion posts which were time consuming and required paying for a subscription.
Engaging in lectures. Harshly marked tests, formatted as paragraph responses worth 2 or 4 marks, you needed to be exact to receive points: tests were easy to fail. His course is very test heavy. No math involved in the content. The discussion posts were easy, but time consuming, and overall unnecessary. He said the textbook was required, it wasn't.
Engaging lectures, but be prepared for tough marking. Attendance is a must, and the weekly discussion posts can be time-consuming. Unstuckstudy helped me prepare for the tests. Overall, an interesting course worth taking.
