EXCELLENT PROFESSOR; EARNED HIS AWARDS
No Comments
Decent guy; gets a bit cocky at times; extra help is where you get the best hint
This guy is awesome! If you need a good organic chem. teacher, Ian is the man!
amazing teacher. if you get anyone else for organic chem you will fail.
AWESOME DUDE>...... Ian is the man
best prof at the university
So bad
Without a doubt the best teacher on campus. Always available, always makes sense, has unbounded patience for idiots who don't know what a complete octet is.
very very good teacher, but material still hard as hell, tests very hard.
A real loser.
He makes failing fun!
By far one of the best profs I have had. Though the course is hard he makes himself very helpful through email and office hours.
ooh day before the midterm.. uhm... Dr Hunt's a good prof I think very organized for sure and seems to care about his students.
Best teacher ever. I can't imagine learning Organic Chemistry from anyone else. He knows his material inside out, and althoguh seems stern, is very willing to help. Tests are tough but manageable. Oh and listen to the way he says nomenclature.
Dr. Hunt is a very good prof. His subject material is hard, but he always goes out of his way to make sure the student understands. I think it bothers him that some students do not go out of their way to learn. This, a few days after my midterm.
the best professor i have come across in sciences, he spends alot of time helping students and making sure they understand and learn the material, although he does seem to be a bit tough to approach. his tests are hard but very fair.
It's been four years since I took it with Dr. Hunt but I still have remember him as one of the greatest profs I've had in my 6 years of Sciences.
very good prof, though cynical and sarcastic. His website of one of the best on the net, and his notes are very clean. the tests were hard though
The guys has the neatest notes and is the most organized I've seen. You'll get no surprises with him on exams. Helpful in that he spends like 8 hours in his office waiting for students to come in and ask for help. Just hated the inconsistant lab markin
I had one of the "other" profs for 351 and received a B, and Hunt for 353 and received an A, not because of anything I did, but because the teaching was that much better. Simply the best teaching professor at the University, bar none.
Crazy hard marker. Very rude and intimidating. Made you feel stupid when asking for help. Was not approachable. Was good with office hours, but then would be totally rude when u asked for help. STAY CLEAR!
I've never seen a prof more willing to help his students than Hunt. He loves chemistry, and he loves teaching. There are no surprises on the tests. If you put in the effort this class requires, you'll do well.
He may know his stuff, but he is unneccesarily gruff, vindictive, and just plain obtuse. I'm an older student with a high GPA - I work hard - and I have had very benign statements turned against me by this man. Odd. Wish he would just go away!
For a super-hard course like Organic Chem, Dr. Hunt does an awesome job of helping out his students. He is very available as far as office hours and online help.
YEA GO IAN!!! The guy has a tendency to make clas really fun. Even if it's organic chem, he makes it so enjoyable that it's a crime not to go back!
Arrogant and kind of unapproachable.
His online resources are excellent and are a immense help. Though his British humour comes off as arrogant and awkward. For a****ty class he does his best to help the students survive.
Great Notes! Predictable Tests ... Dr. Hunt is truly the master of sp2 hybridization and the father of modern organic chemistry
Agreed! This guy is indeed the father of modern spectroscopy
expects you to knowww everything. very rude during office hours, acts all nice in class and then just ****es you away for asking a question, where u need help .
Arrogant and intimidating. He knows chem like the back of his hand, and just expects that you should too. Watch out for the final! He doesn't teach you what you need to know, and leaves you swimming in this mass of reactions that he just decided to ignore. Use the website. It helps.
People seem to love him or hate him, but I have a feeling the people who complain about him being gruff are the ones asking him the same question he's already answered ten different times in ten different places already. He really is a great instructor--just be prepared to work.
Well it was a good class, and he made O-chem tolerable only thing is the final exam was mostly on a unit he taught in a week and a half before running out of time, and the spec problem was from the ninth circle of hell. Now he is teaching 353 as if he got throught the content in 351...I'm not amused
This is possibly THE RUDEST person I have ever met!!! Always going on about how the British are superior and always condecending. I still have nightmares about him.
Had him for 351, and he was pretty good. He seemed to get even better at 353, and was very clear at explaining the concepts. As long as you show him that you're eager to learn he'll always show you his good side.
Just had the final exam and we all got pretty ****ed....this class is sooo hard, B+ on the midterm, ****eddd the final, cant say this enough, hope ppl applying for med/dent schools get a new professor otherwise gpa is ****ed
Make sure, you know enols, enolates, whatever was covered on the LAST day of lecture like the back of your hand.
Difficult class but excellent teacher. If you work hard, you will do well.
Excellent, does expect you to work but like a lot of profs; if you show that you have put in the work and give the effort you WILL succeed. Stick to exam packages and try to actually understand the course material(ie; don't memorize reactions, but understand reaction conditions and what they will do) If you have a problem talk to him!
Although he pretends to be the biggest prick of all time in lecture, one on one Dr. Hunt is a sweetheart (really!) and will help you understand the **** that is organic chemistry. Is going to be sorely missed in chem 353.
He's not a bad proff, but the major problem with this guy is that he'll waste tooooooo much time on stuff that's not that hard. For instance, he spent too much time on arrow pushing for god sakes. And yet he spent 3 days on reactions and the whole final was on reactions. He'll probably screw you cause of that, TAKE CAUSTON INSTEAD.. TRUST ME!
I did not enjoy hunt at all. Too little time spent of important stuff, too much time spent on unimportant stuff. Not only that, but i didnt learn the required material for the second course, 353 in 351, which totally screwed me. Add to the fact that he has a perminant snarl on his face, thumbs down.
This university has a notoriously bad chemistry and physics department. Why don't they do something about that! This guy is just collecting a paycheck. He needs an office job that requires little social interaction.
Hunt was one of those professors who answers your questions with a questions. His answer is always the same : "You tell me."
He's not a bad proff at the beginning. He goes nice and slow, things make sense, things seem easy! But then one week before the final exam he throws SO MUCH new material that you start crapping your pants cause he's going so fast.To make it more enjoyable, the whole final exam is based on that last week!
Fair course - Lab write ups suck. CAL assignments are easy. Midterm/Final are fair. Since they post all the previous exams you know exactly what to expect. Dr. Hunt is blunt about things and some people find him mean, but he knows his stuff and he is clear and a good teacher. I think it is the fact that the course is a bit hard in general. Dr. Hun
The anwsers to our questions are always "you tell me." Sorry, but I wouldn't ask if I knew, seriously.
possibly the worst class ever! stay away from it.
I got owned in the CHEM351 final because he rushed like more than half the course in 3 days.and the whole final was based on just those 3 days. He is actually a pretty good teacher but needs to schedule his time proplerly.
He's pretty much just a jerk, to be honest. I mean, he teaches the stuff well..but he's so RUDE and MEAN about it. I went once to ask him a question about the course and he pretty much was antagonistic right from the beginning. expects you to know every little detail and looks DOWN on biologists (jerkk). His accent is weird..half english/half canadi
He's a great teacher and that's what counts. He can be tough but I think that's what motivates us to learn. If you go for extra help, he's very clear and definitely helps you understand. He expects students to put effort in and actually try and once he sees that, he appreaciates it. Good guy.
Dr. Hunt is an amazing teacher. Yes, he expects you to know everything that he teaches. Don't all teachers? I went for help a few times, and if he's talking about something you don't know, just ask him, and he'll try to explain it to you. If you get his practise tests they're pretty much identical to his tests with numbers and figures changed.
Best prof in the university. Beware of the course though, it's hard.
Good Prof. Very arrogant, and unhelpful
Took 559 and 351 with him and always asked him chemistry questions that were related to other courses. Don't come to his office and waste his and your time, unless you know the background, otherwise you wont understand his answer and will just nod your head in despair. Very helpful, loves football and mountain climbing and a great chem prof overal
He'll come across as extra harsh to a student if the student comes across as someone just looking for a free ride or an easy answer. It's true that he does rush through the last bit of the course, but you can work around this by going to his review session and to his office for extra help. What he doesn't rush through is taught really well.
Very helpful, very fair and does lots of online stuff for extra help- know your stuff.. its not easy

A GREAT prof, he really wants you to UNDERSTAND and LEARN, not memorize...GO DR. HUNT!!
Terrible class!
good at teaching although not very clear and very rushing at the end of the term before the final
Great. Detailed, clear, logical lectures. End material is often rushed or skipped but overall you will benefit from his methodical approach to teaching. End stuff is mostly applications of or closely related to previously covered concepts anyway. With a good understanding of rest of the course you should have no problem with the end material.
Not really sure why he has such a high rating... sure he can teach the material but he is unhelpful and rude when people ask him questions. Personally I think an excellent professor is someone who can teach the material well and also help students who need it, especially in a hard class like this.
Difficult class, but that isn't really Hunt's fault. Personally I never used the textbook, since so many other (read: free) study materials are provided. He may be a hard-ass in class, but talk to him outside of class and he definitely knows his stuff. Since he pretty much determines what goes on the exams, it's a good bet to be in his class so you
I survived O-CHEM!! Took 351/353 with Hunt. Talking to him one-on-one is great, but to avoid his wrath, phrase questions with "I've been thinking about X, and I'm stuck. Can I run my thinking by you?" Works like a charm. If your not chem oriented, try the Hunt's Student Led Sessions - tons of practice, tricks, support. Got me my first A in Chem!
Don't blame the prof for ochem being difficult. of all the profs at the u of c, he is the most helpful and thorough prof. go to lecture, understand the concpets, and the course isn't half bad. very little memorization in this course, which is a problem for lots of students that are good at regurgitating facts.
worst prof. in U of C. rude, and unhelpful. extremely difficult midterms and final.. not recommended at all!!!!
You know, I hate to be the person all you readers see just giving the prof all 1s. Normally I don't. The fact of the matter is, Dr. Hunt is an awful professor. Why he is popular, IDK. He's uncouth, vague and his PowerPoints blow. A typical student should not have to attend a "supplementary instruction session." Maybe he could just teach better?
Class is tough and i hated how we didn't finish the course material
horrible. didnt even finish the material to be tested and was useless at teaching the material that was covered extensively on the final. made me hate chemistry
realllly good prof. went over practice questions which were very similar to the tests. i would definitely recommend him you will learn a lot! i just finished 353 with him as well, im going into final with A- and i was never a strong chem student
Dr. Hunt is a wonderful teacher who is always there willing to help, despite what many may say. Chemistry is about commitment and Dr. Hunt's door is always open. Chem 353 is the most organized course I have ever seen and I was time and time again impressed with the impeccable structure and excellent webpage.
I think Hunt was great. His website is very concise and informative. You don't even need to go to lectures, just read his website and do practice questions. I don't understand why people have to go to do spring/summer UofA OChem, because UofC is way easier given the layout Hunt makes it. He deserves his teaching awards!
A really helpful professor!
Dr. Hunt is a good prof, but he expects you to work hard. If you work hard you can get an A.
Hunt is very good prof. Dont expect him to babysit students,, but if you put the time in he is willing to keep you on track. not the easiest prof ever, but very clear as to what is expected... its organic chemistry, of course its not a gpa booster, work is required.. knows content in his sleep. and then some.
he's okay... seems a bit rude sometimes
Actually he made an entire organic chemistry website with ebook, practice questions and exam archive so I think he does care about his students. But the final is so long and only 3 hours to write it (no time to go over the answers).
He comes across as aloof and sarcastic but he's actually a pretty reasonable guy and had a good open-door policy. His website was amazing, probably to make up for his absurd tests - but ochem is notoriously a GPA downer. Good prof overall.
i did not have him as my prof i had sutherland instead but when i studied for mids and finals i asked him alot of questions as his office was almost always open during exam week and he explained it really well witout any hesitation and his thinking style was very unique too, learned alot from him and got a gud mark.... it is a hard class tho.
Extremely judgemental and now hes the head of the chem department. Pessimistic and believes that he has put enough effort into the website so he doesnt have to teach properly in lectures. Will help u if you go to his door but he isnt the nicest person to deal with.
Tells you why you're probably going to fail on the first day...sad thing was, turned out to be true for me. A bit of a pessimist, but does help if you don't ask a stupid question
Organic chemistry may insanely hard but it's because of this man (and a lot of hard work) that I got an A in 351 and 353. He offers extra help sessions once or twice a week and will always help you if you come to him with questions. Do this BEFORE exam week unless he already knows you as a dedicated student or you may get a few snide remarks.
Dr. Hunt can be very direct and blunt at times but is willing to help if you want it. His lectures are very organized and he explains the material very thoroughly. If you're interested in organic chemistry, CHEM559 would be a great course for you.
His teachings are VERY clear. Probably the clearest I've ever had and gives great notes via his power point slides. I attribute my mark to the difficulty of the course itself but Ian made a very intimidating course more bearable. A little more time spent on reactions, mechanisms, and synthesis would have been nice for the final, however.
Be warned - the material is insanely difficult, which makes the tests and assignments difficult too. Dr. Hunt is very helpful, and apart from a few poorly designed labs, was a very good lecturer. The marking scheme given to the lab T.A.'s is ridiculous and you aren't told what they are expecting in the reports. Still, good prof overall.
Extremely helpful. Open door policy. The website and old exams are enough to get a good mark in this class. The department seems extremely organized.
If you are a chemistry major, this is one course you DO want to take as an option (Even if you hated spectroscopy in 351/353/355). Quizzes are easy! Midterm 1 was great! 2 and 3 were challenging but do able. The final is super long and you most likely need more than 3 hours to finish. I thought I bombed the final but he does give partial marks! A-
Hard class but great prof. Makes things extremely clear.
Hunt was really good at teaching the material and getting the point across, regardless it was an extremely difficult class I imagine I would have struggled even more in other lecture sections. The labs, however, were not very clear.
Dr. Hunt is a great prof. He is very helpful when you ask him questions in his office or after the class. Make sure to do as much as sample midterms and finals available on the website. If you can do good on them youll be fine on the test. and try to understand the reason behind everything. Memorizing will get you nowhere in that class
Dr. Hunt makes organic chemistry II easy. Easy in the sense that his lecture notes are clear, concise, and in the sense that you get free access to so many resources (practice tests, extra tutorials, etc.). If you do bad in the course it's your own fault.
Mumbles in a monotone voice.. Couldn't hear a thing. Speak louder please.
Dr. Hunt is a fantastic prof. He teaches the subject extremely well and very clearly. This is not an easy class, but he does what he can to make it manageable. Highly recommended to take Chem 353 with him.
Great Prof! Makes everything perfectly clear. Helps you in every way he can. Take it with him!
Considering this is organic chemistry II i thought Dr.Hunt did a pretty good job of clearly explaining the course. Tests are still tough however
WORST PROF!! So rude and not very helpful. He made it feel like it was our fault he had to take over for a prof on mat leave. Don't bother emailing either unless you have already solved your problem, as he has no interest in helping you
His notes are clear and he doesn't waste time in lectures. Having said that, there is just too much course material, so expect to learn a week's worth of material in one lecture at the end of the semester. He can be rude and mean, especially when you email him.
He always emphasizes what the important points are and how students usually get confused with certain concepts which is very helpful. Even posts podcasts of his lectures online.
Very clear on what is expected from students. His notes are really good and he makes sure you get all the information you need. The course itself, however, is really tough, I felt like I was taking 3 separate courses rather than just one :( (due to the lab, the lecture, and the mandatory tutorial)
Very very helpful, he has been teaching the course since the beginning of time. Go to his office, ask questions, DO NOT text in class (he will call you out), pay attention to everything he says, do to the tutorial sessions in Earth Sciences (they are very helpful)
Alot of ppl dont like hunt becos they r stupid. hunt is an awesome instructor, straight to the point and focuses on whats important. however he doesnt give u answers directly and wants u to figure them out on ur own. this makes students think hes mean. hes not. he just seems mean. 559 definitely recommended... ....
Awesome prof, when taking organic chem keep your head on track and consistently keep up with course material. There is a TON of resources provided through the course website which helped me tremendously throughout the term. Go to his extra sessions or drop by his office if you have questions, because he is great at rephrasing complex ideas!
He's not a mean prof if you don't act like an idiot. Don't text in class and review your notes frequently so you can keep up and know what's going on. He lectures are very good and example-heavy and the exams aren't so bad if you organize your study time to start early.
For a relatively difficult class, he taught the material very well. All lectures were organized, clear and to the point. Definitely the best organic chemistry prof, highly recommended.
Dr. Hunt is by far the best professor I had at the UofC. He compares organic chemistry to that of a mountain. He acts as the guide and gives you all the hints/strategies/tools that you need, but warns that in order to succeed you must be willing a lot of effort in these two courses.
Dr. Hunt is an absolutely amazing prof for CHEM 353!I attended both lectures, and he was by far the better one. Also, attend the Tutorial+ he offers. I attribute my A to attending his extra sessions.
Hunt went above and beyond in his teaching to aid students (including myself ) about the ochem topics. He was especially helpful outside of class and I dont think that I would've enjoyed Organic Chem if it hadn't been for him.
Incredibly knowledgeable, and the class was taught very clearly. Lectures were to-the-point and well organized. I knew he was a good professor, but his teaching skills went above and beyond what I expected.
Dr. Hunt is absolutely amazing- at first I just read of Rate my Prof to select a professor, and I thought the other professor was better since the rating was higher. However, I've attempted to sit through all 3 professors (for this semester) classes and I find Dr. Hunt as the most efficient and organized and replies FAST!!! :D He's the best!!!!!!!!
Dr. Hunt is the best professor I've had at this school. I had the pleasure of having him for this class and CHEM 353. I would recommend this course to anybody who finished CHEM351/353 and even somewhat enjoyed it. His teaching made this course great (I didn't even like spec in CHEM351/353 and I LOVED this course)
I had read comments saying Dr. Hunt was mean. HE IS NOT. He has a dry sense of humour, but he is the best of the O-chem profs. Go to his weekly tutorials, ask questions, do the assignments, attend his lectures, and O-chem will not be as scary as everyone says it is!
good prof, his email reply time is actually kind of scary, its that fast. He holds tutorial sessions on his own time that are drop in and you goes through harder problems getting you to write on the whiteboard etc... Has a great website for the class with lots of problems.
Ian Hunt is a very knowledgable professor and his lectures are worth attending due to his clarity and organization. However, he will ALWAYS come off as a pompous, ignorant person. Never ask for help outside of lectures.
Ian hunt is probably the best chemistry professor for chem 351. The notes he gives are very useful and you must attend class and pay attention in order for everything to click. Ian attitude towards students will leave you feeling like he is very mean but this is just how he is, ignore it and get your questions answered.
Amazing prof. Going to lectures is a must. Dr. Hunt couldn't be more clear during lecture, and gives a ton of practice for midterms and exams. This class is a lot of work but if you keep up you'll do well.
I took CHEM 351 in the fall last year with Dr. Hunt and didn't have a chance to write a review until now. I sat through all 3 professors lectures at the time of the course and Dr Hunt is definitely the best! Do anything in your power to enroll in his class! He responds to e-mails/Blackboard extremely fast no matter what day or time it is!!! :)
Dr. Hunt was honestly one of the most clear and knowledgeable professors I have had. I was able to pay attention in class (partially because I feared him), but he was able to explain concepts very clearly. Definitely attend his lectures, and Ochem will not be so bad (missed him for Ochem 2)!
Dr. Hunt does a great job at explaining all of the topics and has the best analogies. However, the in-class material is far easier than the tests. Make sure you use the practise material on the chemistry website and do as many practise exams as possible! The exams will be a righteous slap in the face if you go in without looking at a practise test.
Hunt is a very good prof, he answers emails very quickly and he does really well at explaining things so that you'll be able to understand. Taking CHEM 353 with him too!
OCHEM is inherently hard, his lectures are clear though, willing to help. Online resources are awesome. A bit frustrating that lecture material is substantially easier than exams. You would likely fail the final if you don't to practise exams. If you do lots of practise exams you can do ok on exams. Seems interested in teaching
Dr. Hunt is a very knowledgeable and excellent professor who treats the class extremely well. The only problem, in my opinion, is that he does not seem to be very approachable, in fact I am very afraid to ask him questions. However, if you do ask he does answer your questions. You MUST do the practice MTFinals or you will likely fail.
Lectures are informative and concise (fill-in blank slides). Although there is a 'required' text, I never had to crack open a textbook for this course. Dr. Hunt was generally ungracious in our one-on-one encounters, but always answered questions knowledgeably - as long as he does his job well, I couldn't care less. Good instruction but tough love.
His notes are nice and simple. The best part of this course is the CHEM351 website, use it for everything, labs, tutorials, and lecture. Make sure to go over plenty of previous exams as you'll notice they contain a lot of information you didn't explicitly go over in class. He replies to e-mails pretty fast. Textbook is useless, just don't.
Hands down the best prof I have ever had. The course is set up flawlessly. There is always some assignmentlab to be done (which may sound bad) but thats exactly how you do good in the class because you consistently work at it. Comes across rude, but he just has a dry humor and is actually a great guy. Definitely recommend because you'll get an A.
I don't regret taking this class an option; the material is something that any chemist should know. The class is based on problem-solving, so most study time is spent doing problems. If you are stuck on a problem, he tries to guide you in the right direction, but doesn't offer much help or hints.
Decent ochem prof, but not a nice person. Don't bother talking to him, he does not care about students at all. Pay attention in lectures and review old midterms (seriously, dont even bother looking at your notes. Just review midterms). But don't try to talk over a question with him, its like he gets upset when students come to ask about question
Dr. Hunt is a very knowledgable chem prof. He ensures that he explains concepts in a way that promotes comprehension. He may come across as very rude and frightening, however he actually cares about his students very much and has a decent sense of humour. The "etext" he uses is golden and has an archive of practice exams from more than 10 years ago
If you fail the midterm, you're pretty much done... the final and midterm are long, and everything he ever taught (even the smallest comment) can be a big part. The final should be reduced in %, maybe then students would be less stressed. Otherwise a good teacher, very smart, and hot. Just requires so much extra time and preparation.
Dr. Hunt is an awesome prof. Lots of people assume he's mean because his sense of humour is a bit abrupt, but he's so helpful. Especially one-on-one, no one ever went to the tutorials in my class so I would just ask him questions the entire time, he's really good at explaining anything you don't understand, and he's very patient.
Extremely clear explanations for all topics covered in class, and he makes sure that everyone is on the same page before you go on. If you go in to talk to him for clarification on any topic, he will not let you go until he is certain you fully understand the concept, which is excellent. Thumbs up.
Dr. Hunt is one of my favorite profs. He is always willing to make time to give you one on one learning and is there to make sure you actually understand the material. He is very respectful and funny and his lectures are easy to follow. This class is a great upper level option and I would definitely recommend it. Be sure to take good notes!
Awesome prof, really cares about his students and makes sure that you are understanding the content. Don't be deceived into thinking 559 is an easy class though, it starts off with a lot of review but by the time finals come around the material becomes super difficult.
If you bring the slides with you to lecture and participate in class, you are pretty well set. Quizzes and exams are frequent, but open book. The course is essentially fancy chemical puzzle solving, so if you had a good grasp of spectroscopy in OChem this is a good choice for you.
Ian Hunt is a fantastic prof and a chemistry god. CHEM 351 is tough and you'll really have to work for it, but he's there to help in case you need it.
Dr. Hunt is the MOST caring prof. He makes heavy use of online resources (ie. email, discussion board, bulletin) which is amazing. He's dedicated to students, even replying at 3am before exams to ensure everyone understands. He's very easy to talk to and lays material out clearly. The course is a weeder course for bio students so exams are hard
Very knowledgeable with subject matter and easy to take notes since current and previous slide are always up simultaneously. Can be hard to determine grade since lab marks aren't posted until the end.
Extremely difficult course, but the Dr. Hunt was very good at explaining things. Skipping lectures is not an option. He does sometimes come across as a little abrupt or maybe even a little rude, but he means well, and that's just his style.
Good prof with good notes and a good lecturer. Just don't ask him for help or he will rip you apart, doesn't care about his students and is very rude. Other then that he is a very good prof and I learned a lot from him. Wouldn't want anyone else to teach me ochem.
He knows his stuff and he lectures are decent- he knows how to teach. He went slow at the beginning and then near the midterm and final he had 2 or 3 lectures left to do and rushed through them to stay on track, which was frustrating. Asked some questions on the anonymous chat and he tore a strip off of me. Incredibly rude and overly sensitive
Went to 90% lectures/tutorials and felt lost. Tut format is bad its 1 on 1 help if your not sure what to do u wait hoping he gets to u b4 its over (bad use of time) rather have him work problems as a group. Uses D2L forums to answer practice Qs, he partakes but waits mainly for student answers (its unhelpful) Open book tests but its little help.
Terrible prof. In his fall 2017 class he legit through a tantrum and almost stormed out of the class just because no one answered a question he asked. He's better off doing research. Teaching is not his forte. Last day of classes and we still didn't cover an entire chapter. If you get him as a proff better switch as soon as you can.
A tough class made tougher. He was really slow at first in reviewing material from the pre-reqs, which seemed nice at the time until he has to rush heavily to finish content before the exams. Be prepared to essentially teach yourself to pass the exams from old exams, b/c the exam questions are unlike the style of questions seen through the course
Dr. Hunt is a great prof. He can be very blunt, if you ask a stupid question he will tell you that it's stupid question, but he just likes to stay focused on the difficult concepts and help students avoid making dumb mistakes. I thought that his lecture templates and the course website were both really good.
Dr. is a fantastic lecturer. He is very clear and easy to understand. Try to take his upper level courses CHEM 559 and CHEM 555 he is really laid back and funny in them. He seems intimidating but is really nice and caring. Just don't stupid questions and check for answers online before you ask. If you respect him he will respect you. 10/10 prof.
Dr. Hunt is good at explaining difficult chemistry concepts. However, he's temperamental and unfriendly. I would only give him a score of 1/5 because there are lots of nicer and better chemistry professors than him. You won't pass this course if you miss too many lectures by the way.
Never in my life have I met a prof who has this much disrespect to his students. He is rude, has a short temper, and responds negatively to emails if you try to ask for clarification. However, I would never want anyone else to teach me ochem because he is incredibly knowledgeable on the subject plus his powerpoints are very organized and concise.
Do not recommend this prof. He insults students and expects his students to have a full understanding of material without proper teaching. Does not prepare you well for his exams and does not care about his students successes or failures. I went to 100% of his lectures and still failed the course.
Easiest course in my life. Easy credits.
Get ready for a rollercoaster if you have to take a course with Dr. Hunt. He is an excellent prof, and makes his standards very clear, however, he can be very harsh and come across as rude. Dont ask a question unless youve scanned every document in the world to find the answer. He will go out of the way to help if you 1:1 though. Rollercoaster
Ochem is one of the hardest courses you can take at pretty much any university, and Dr. Hunt is very unapologetic about that fact. There's a ton of material to cover in the course so his mantra is "don't fall behind." Make sure to take full advantage of the resources on the course website especially the posted midterms and finals from past years.
For 201, 203, 351 --> he's not there to help you, he's only there to weed you out. 353 --> he's there to help you but will try to weed you out if he feels you're incompetent
Just do every single practice test you possibly can. The stuff you see in lectures is not even similar to what you will see on tests.
so rude, didn't even answer my questions
so rude, didn't even answer my questions, do not take this class with him
These awful, rude professors always get over-rated and he's no different. No idea how his rating is so high. Not a great teacher even by university standards and as stated before, the lecture stuff is nothing like the exam. Very boring and dry sense of humour, so hopefully you're into that.
This prof makes no secret of how hard the course is and its designed to weed out people. Lectures are well laid out and understanding is easy enough but the tests are nothing like the lecture material. Take practice tests early and teach yourself. Prof is blunt and can come across as rude. Ask him questions as a last resort. Teach yourself.
Great Prof. Very knowledgeable about the material in Organic Chemistry. He teaches well. However can be a little intimidating. But definitely would recommend him.
He had a hissy fit in class when no one answered his question and stormed out
I thought this class was fair until the final exam yesterday. Tutorials match the lecture material and help you study. Midterm was fair if you did practice tests. However, the final came out of nowhere in terms of difficulty. None of his previous finals had been even close to that difficult. Went in it with an A and don't even know if I passed now.
Is it even legal to have an exam worth 50% the FIRST day of exam break when we learned half the material in the few days before? Final was way too hard compared to all the practice ones posted. This year just got screwed for all professional school applications... Should have taken this course last year because that final was a breeze
Not the worst, but certainly not good. You must teach yourself half, exams are nothing like lecture. Doesn't post some slides, gets upset easily, not approachable. Content he bothers to teach is well explained though. Make heavy use of past exams + teach yourself w/ outside resources. You'll fail if you only study lectures, tutorials, and labs.
Be ready to study for the course yourself! Final was nothing like what he taught in the class.
I see a lot of hateful comments towards this guy. I honestly thought he wasn't half bad. Keep up with lecture content and do as many past exams as possible. He is very accessible outside of class - he answers the discussion posts within an hour, on weekdays, weeknights or weekends. If you swing by his office, he's more than willing to help you out.
Wasn't the worst but wasn't the best either. Expected you to know all the material prior to class, very hissy if you didn't answer his questions, doesn't post the slides or the notes on them. He teaches well but not much of what he teaches is on the MT or final, lots of self-teaching. Pretty blunt and rude during lectures, wouldn't do it again.
Hunt is a great professor in terms of teaching, he gives clear notes and his notes are really good if you actually come to class and listen to him talk through the material. The course is hard in itself but Hunt tries to make bearable - just do as many practice exams as you can and don't fall back! If you don't understand something, get it cleared.
Dr. Hunt is one of the best professors I have ever had. Organic spectroscopy is HARD, but Dr. Hunt does a fantastic job of teaching such a difficult concept. He is always available in his office and will take as much time as you need to help you understand a concept. He truly wants you to succeed and is very willing to help you do so if you ask.
Hard course to begin with, but ontop Hunt does nothing to help students. He is also abrupt on email and condescending in his D2L posts, which is not to be taken personally, he does not like teaching. He should not be course coordinator, and this course needs to be completely changed.
Unreasonably hard exams and grading comparing to what he taught.
This professor is really terrible. Unreasonably harsh grading standards and high expectations. If you take CHEM 351 with him I feel sorry for you.
Dr. Hunt is not the best, but also not the worst. He comes across as rude in class and in electronic communication, but I thought he was reasonable when approached in person. Study the old midterms and finals like your life depends on it, and really UNDERTSAND reaction mechanisms. Memorizing helps, but you'll eventually hit a wall. Ochem is tough.
Hunt may seem rough on the outside, and he certainly is, but he is also a very smart man who explains detailed information very well. If you ask a question in lecture or challenge him, he will make you feel terrible and everyone will feel bad for you. To his credit, he does try to throw in some humour and make lectures not entirely dull.
Teaches concepts but doesn't teach you the process which you need for the exams. Hunt is extremely rude, and if he thinks a question is dumb he will call you out in front of the entire class. As such, he is not approachable at all and students are scared to answer his questions for fear of being wrong and being called out
Dr. Hunt knows a lot about organic chemistry and his notes were clear and concise. In that regard he was a pretty good prof BUT, he was extremely rude to the students in his class. He'd get frustrated when people would not answer questions and would make students uncomfortable. Also, I still have nightmares of him banging his hands on his desk.
People get intimidated with organic chemistry and if you don't put in the work you won't do well. Dr. Hunt does a very good job of teaching such a hard subject and is very helpful if you ask for it. Don't be discouraged by the negative ratings, Dr. Hunt is one of the best professors I have ever had at the U of C.
I don't like his teaching style at all and he humiliated me for asking questions
Feel sorry for the below rater. ian hunt has a way of humiliating students who ask honest questions. He has a problem with people who just want to improve and understand very complicated problems, that he himself designs to fail students.
Awful professor. Notes are copy-pastes from the website but attendance is essentially mandatory. If you don't understand something it's your fault and you should work harder, not ask him. I'm a fan of dry humour but this guy just isn't funny. 90 is an A+ so it isn't too bad but it's the same for any 351/353 prof.
The way he set up the course was not appropriate at all and does not give you a chance to do good in course. He uploads practice worksheets without answer keys which is really "helpful", so thanks for that. And the hardest material of the course was taught in the last two lectures, which were rushed, and that correlates to more than halfontheFINAL
Lecture notes were terribly organized in sync with tutorials. Hunt was decent at explanations but wasn't approachable at all... which any competent prof should be. He continues to put students down at every chance he gets (emails, test reviews, even lecture explanations, yes lecture note explanations) and makes it difficult to ask questions.
Ian Hunt gets a bad reputation but honestly, he is a good prof. He was really good at explaining difficult topics and his notes were really good for studying for the final. OChem is a hard class but he made it a lot easier for me to get through.
Dr. Hunt seems a bit scary, but he teaches CHEM 559 well! It's a spectroscopy course and he's very good at teaching it. He always tries to make the class more interactive and engaging by letting us work in groups. His exams were fair and consistent with the past versions. I recommend him because he's a good teacher.
I had the professor last year and had a very poor experience. He got angry that the class because we failed to participate when he asked us a question and threw his headset on the table and stormed out. He did come back a few minutes later to continue. Embarrassed multiple student for simply asking a question(reason for the lack of participation).
He is horrible. He should be reported. He seems very insecure and immature to be constantly having temper tantrums in class
Dr. Hunt was a good prof. Some concepts in organic chem are difficult to understand, but Dr. Hunt does a good job of explaining them. He seems mean and not approachable, but if you ask for help in office hours, he will gladly help. If you attend lecture, do all practice sets, the old exams, and go to his office hours, you'll get a good mark.
Chemistry 515 was a tough course but he walked us through it well.
Don't let the negative reviews turn you away from Dr. Hunt. So far, he is by far the best prof I've had! His notes are strategically made for you to fill in the key concepts, his lectures are very informative and interesting and he's extremely helpful in office hours. You just walk in and he'll keep explaining until it clicks for you! 10/10!
He seems to enjoying giving his students anxiety for no specific reason aside from outdated teaching methods. Best of luck to all premeds in this course.
Horrible, immature and unprofessional. Very arrogant and humiliates students due to his own insecurities. Should be reported for his disrespectful treatment of students.
Dr. Hunt comes across as a harsh man, but if you'd been asked the same stupid questions (that are easily answered by reading the basic documents) for 20 years you'd be a little coarse too. If you try, this man will meet you there 110% and give you all the time that you need to fully grasp a concept. Ochem can be hard but if you try he will too.
Treats students in a horrible and disrespectful manner. Can be reported anonymously to protected disclosure office at university.
He makes every portion of the course tough but if you toughen it out and stick with it, you'll have really good foundation in chemistry. His tutorials are very useful, along with the website. Also, the labs can be unreasonably demanding. You have to rely on yourself to pass this course.
Dont listen to all these positive reviews. Its his job to answer stupid questions- just because theyre stupid questions doesnt mean he is justified in mocking the students asking them. But seriously, what did you expect from the guy who had an affair with a grad student?
I understand he could be sometimes intimidating, but I agree with other students that he teaches really well and you can build good foundation in chemistry. Seriously, organic chemistry started making sense to me after I took his classes and I personally think he is the most knowledgeable person in the chemistry department.
Dr. Hunt was the lab coordinator and did not personally teach me, but from the various communications I had with him via email, he came across as extremely rude and unhelpful. Seems knowledgeable about the material, but do not expect to get any clarification from him. Talk to your TA, another professor or legit anyone else first.
Worst prof I have ever had very rude and unprofessional. I would wait to take the course rather than take it with him.
He presents the material in a well-organized manner, which facilitates organic chemistry. However, his personality is quite toxic and disrespectful. He tries to act like he is above everyone else, which completely backfires since everybody at university is an adult. He is also terrible at emailing, which is very laughable for a professor.
Hunt had decent lectures, he explains things well in the videos he posted, but he's terrible with emails. Everytime I have sent him an email I've gotten a response that made me feel stupid for asking a question, and they've just been overall very rude. Better off just watching youtube videos.
rude, would not reply back to your emails, not approachable, and makes everything harder for no reason. avoid at all costs
In my personal experience with Dr. Hunt, I had a medical emergency that made me miss a synchronous graded activity and Hunt got back to me super fast and helped me take it at another time that worked for me. His lectures are incredibly informative and I am sure if you take this class you will do well. At the end of the day, he is a really good prof
Rude. The final exam was synchronous but the website crashed because he decided to do deliver the exam synchronously in a class of 400 people. When the students emailed him about the technical difficulties, he said everyone "STOP emailing me." How could we have known that other people are having problems too??? I don't get him
Dr. Hunt can be extremely helpful if YOU put in the effort and try to improve in this class. Organic chemistry is by no means easy, but if you spend the time Dr. Hunt will be there to support and guide you. His lectures are a great resource to succeed in the course as they are extremely informative and articulate the important details.
Dr. Hunt's lectures are overall pretty good. He definitely knows the material well and knows how to teach it. His online resources are also amazing. He is pretty much unapproachable tho. Very rude and condescending, and he seems to enjoy making simple things frustrating for no reason. His attitude makes it difficult to ask questions or seek help.
Made me feel like the bug on the side walk he skipped a step to squish
this guy isn't as bad as his reviews make him out to be. Every week he was nice, clear, and respectful of questions all semester in lecture. i don't believe he covers what you really need to know for tests in class which is a bummer, but he's half interesting. such a hard class but a decent prof, get the best grade possible in labs/cal helps a lot!
His attitude towards students is very mean and condescending, no wonder his ratings are consistently so low. Unfortunately no one else will teach this extremely boring and dry subject.
Teacher cares more about giving students a hard time than actually teaching, like he takes pride in student's failing. Will yell at you during class.
Dr. Hunt is fantastic during office hours, however, I found myself having to rely on the other lecturers' recorded videos to understand the content on the exams. He often does not cover what will be on the tutorials and exams but is great for questions. He can also come across as rude via email, but don't let that deter you from getting help.
Dr hunt gets a bad rep from ochem 1 students. He's not a bad prof people just blame him when they do bad in the class. He was very nice and helpful when I asked him questions and made sure we all understood the content well.
Dr. Hunt is very passionate about OCHEM. I received a higher grade in his class then in CHEM 201/203 due to clearer expectations and grading criteria. I agree that he seems intimidating, but if you have the courage to ask questions after class or meet with him you will find that he will go out of his way to help you understand- he really cares!
Read the online text (kind of painful to navigate) and you'll realize he makes everything much more confusing than it needs to be. Not to mention, he is rude and condescending. We're all adults so it's weird that he acts as if he's a superior being and his students are just some measly children.
Dr. Hunt has always been very rude in emails. His content is lecture heavy and the lectures aren't as helpful either.
Chem 351/353 are the hardest courses student will ever take on campus. Ian Hunt teaches in a no nonsense way. His notes are clear and concise. If you have any questions he is very helpful in office hours, I sent hours with him over the course of the semester and especially after I bombed the midterm. Best chemistry prof out there.
Thinks he is above all his students. Seems he has been at the uni so long he has a god complex and no matter how much he is criticized, he will not change teaching styles. Avoid at all costs honestly.
His exams are 100x harder than what he actually teach on class. So his tests are to challenge you rather than assessing your knowledge/learning! He will never realise that if most of the class failed that means there is a problem with his teaching !
Thanks to Ian Hunt i do not need to look for a true definition of a Narcissist. He thinks he's above all student while his income is actually from our pocket. He will never answer your question politely, he is very rude to students. If you have any question please ask dr. van humbeck or your TA instead. Avoid him at all cost and you've been warned!
Hard class, I don't think it's all his fault. His lectures are hard, not the best explanations but decent. He's great in office hours though, he will spend an hour just to explain one concept. I am 50/50 on if I recommend him or not. Read the textbook and learn all nomenclature soon. Teach yourself as much as you can. Tests are freaking hard, prep!
No nonsense. Great during office hours and super accessible for extra help. You need to work very hard in this class, but I found it enjoyable. People who don't like him probably asked him stupid questions and were lazy-- he has little patience for this. If you want to be coddled, take a different class. Do old tests and understand the concepts.
I failed CHEM 351 2 times with ian hunt. His lectures leave you more confused. Final exams will have questions that he can't provide solutions for. It's pass final pass course for one of the harder technical subjects in chemistry and with the most incompetent prof in the uni. Science department doesn't care about frequent complaints about him.
He can be rude to students during class and he's horrible at explaining his own slides. He does not teach, he just reads his slides. I decided to stop attending the lectures and use the textbook instead and found that incredibly useful. I was able to understand the course content at a much higher level.
Absolutely the worst teacher I've ever had, super rude and does not care about your education.
He lives such a sad life that he likes to take it out on his students. You will be humbled by this man in the discussion posts for asking reasonable questions. Tenure is a crazy thing.
he's scary in lecture but office hours he is soooo helpful, he will spend time with you until you fully understand the concept you're struggling on. In lecture, he teaches slowly but personally it is very helpful as we spend more time on a concept instead of skim right through it. This is a hard course, do all the practice and ask questions!!!!
Dr. Hunt regularly gave rude and biting responses in communications with students. His textbook and lab manual are so passive aggressive it leaves you feeling attacked just for reading it. Exams don't measure your learning but ability to withstand pressure; the final exam was primarily content covered in the last 2 weeks of class. Good luck.
Dr. Hunt is amazing! he is super good at teaching course material and is even better in office hours. He's so kind and motivating, made me really want to try hard in this class!
I found Hunt to be a great prof, I really enjoyed how concise and to the point his lectures and slides were. He was also great in office hours and was great at explaining or clarifying concepts. Chem 351 is very hard, but not as difficult as I thought it was going to be, but was extremely time consuming (weekly tutorials, labs, exam prep).
Possibly the worst excuse for a professor I have ever had. Extremely lazy and careless, if you have to take a class with him do yourself a favor and get the lecture notes of another prof. Also tested students online during Covid in the most nonsense way possible. Good Luck! Positive reviews are fake, written by himself obviously.
Very curt over the written word, which is unfortunate because it dissuades many students from attending office hours, where he is incredibly nice and helpful. The rumors are true; OChem is not easy, BUT Dr. Hunt provides all the tools you need to succeed (practice tests, open-door policies for help, etc.). It's just up to you to make use of them.
I'm sorry, are all of the positive reviews written by Hunt himself? Because there is no way they're accurate or genuine. Believe the negative one-star reviews, they're a true reflection of his "teaching" ability.
This man is the worst excuse for a prof I ever had. He is so condescending and rude and has no respect for his students at all. You would think after years of teaching that he would know how to design reflective and fair exams, but no. The mental torture you experience while writing his 12 page exams will forever scar you. Avoid him at all costs!
I failed CHEM 351 2 times with Hunt. His lectures leave you more confused. Final exams will have questions that he himself can't provide solutions for. It's pass final pass course for one of the harder science subjects, and with the most incompetent prof in the university. Chem department doesn't care about frequent complaints about him
While Dr. Hunt is probably no one's favourite prof, no one can deny he knows what he's talking about. Go to his office hours and you'll see a much better side of him to how he acts in lecture and over emails. As for excelling in 351/353, the key is simply to just do as MANY practice MTs and finals as you can. Don't expect his lectures to save you.
I absolutely hate this man. Despite years and years of complaints from students, the chem department suck doesn't remove him. It seems as though his exams have been getting progressively more difficult as the years go by, despite students continuously. Never take a chem course with him, in fact never take a chem course at this chem department.
I just wrote the worst final I have ever written in all my time here at the university. I never knew that HUNT go descend to such lows to create a final this difficult. Because of him, I genuinely wanted to jump off a bridge. This final exam could ruin the future of the rest of my degree, so thanks Hunt, for making my life a miserable hell.
Thanks hunt for giving us such a difficult final exam. That was the hardest exam I have ever written, after doing so poorly in this class already. This class will forever haunt me in my nightmares.
I found the content of the class to be pretty lazily put together by Ian Hunt. Aside from the assignments there is not much content compared to a class with full lectures, so I found the points pretty vague. A lot of self studying which is not really why I pay for a university level course.
He made the second test and final exam way too hard. His lecture was useless and did not prepare at all for these. Worst prof ever seen and don't ever take this course if you don't absolutely have to.
HE IS SO CONDESCENDING...Interesting material for a Chem major, but ridiculous workload even for a 300-level, and marking is incredibly harsh. Avoid if at all possible!
Undoubtedly the worst professor i ever had at UofC. I got an A because of how hard I studied, not because of this "prof". I dont give him any credit for my success whatsoever. He derived questions that would never be used, and gave us no practice problems for exams. Don't even bother going through his slides, because its useless.
There is a reason for the rating. How are you suppose to learn if Ian writes all the formulas on the board, you write it all down, then he erases it all and tells you it's wrong. Absolute nightmare.
Be ready to self study. He didn't give any instructions as it's "your" responsibility, not his. You need to check the syllabus and follow the due dates for each assignment because he won't remind you. The topic is chemistry based so if you haven't taken any chem, this would be slightly difficult to handle the exams
This guy should be banned from teaching, Like, bro he didnt do anything useful. He literally just yaps some bs in class. He's really rude, like his way of speaking, its like he's holding us hostage kinda bs. NEVER EVER TAKE CLASS FROM HIM.
While Professor Hunt can be tough, he really knows his stuff. Go to office hours - he's super helpful there. For success, just do tons of practice problems, even with tools like unstuckstudy ai. Not the easiest class, but worth the effort.
He was hard to reach, an extremely slow grader and in general absent. Don't ask him for help even if it says in the assignment to ask if you have questions as he will just tell you a snarky response. The class has the potential to be interesting and informative but is taught horribly. would avoid at all costs.
Seemed annoyed when asked questions. Website he used was very confusing and overwhelming with so many links everywhere. Answered questions like the answer was obvious and made students feel discouraged
This class was brutal! Never take a class from him, ever. Soooo dry! He was disorganized right from the beginning of the course. The midterm and final were easy if you studied (got As). All assignments are mandatory, so prepare to get an incomplete if you hate participation marks.
Hunt knows and conveys the material very well, and clearly outlines what is expected of students. I think his lectures are actually organized for the most part. However, many students can say that he will respond to questions, in person and online, with an attitude that comes across as unpleasant and condescending.
on god idk why this guy is still a teacher worst teacher of all time dont listen to the other glazers
Just do yourself a favour and avoid him
This was my second time taking the course and he taught it much better than the last prof I had. He is passionate for chemistry. He has good office hours and well structured notes. If you can look past his snippy attitude I highly recommend taking the course with him. The exams are tough so you have to study a lot and really understand the material
Dr. Hunt is a very straightforward man who can sometimes be rude, but that is because he is a busy person who wants his students to succeed in an incredibly difficult course. He taught the content very well and did a good job as a course coordinator. The exams were quite fair and the tutorials were a well thought out process. Didn't like the labs
I hate giving such a low review because usually there is some silver lining but I honestly learned more by skipping lectures and using the time to teach myself the concepts. He was very angry and not very much help. This is not helpful behaviour, especially for a second-year course. The course concepts themselves were not especially difficult.
brutal class and his lectures were way more basic than what was tested
Although Dr. Hunt can come off as rather crass online, he is very knowledgable and wants to help students. Answers emails and questions really quickly. His lectures were straightforward and helpful yet you need to do a lot of practice to really internalize the material. The exams were fair and the tutorials were helpful. The labs were really fun!
Lots of work with the tutorials and labs, plus little instruction for what was expected. Tests were much more difficult than class content, and many heavy exam concepts were barely discussed in class or not anywhere near the depth of the test (focus on the old exams over lectures for studying) He is also very Passive aggressive in his emails.
He is very helpful and in class he would go over problems with the class as a group which really helped reinforce my learning. He will help you with questions you have during tutorials and the lecture videos are good and straightforward. He is also great at getting back to emails you send him!
Only says that he will help his students and tells them to ask questions, but when questions are asked, those questions are rejected as "stupid" or you should read the material more carefully
This prof is the rudest prof I have encountered in my 4 years at u of c. He belittles all his students just for asking questions about the tough material. His exam questions are 1000X harder than the class material, so no practice problems in class reflect the exam difficulty. He is rude online and in person. Don't ever ask him any questions.
Do yourself a favor and take this course with literally ANYONE else. It's not worth it to tank your entire GPA by taking even one class with this man. You'll get a horrible experience and a poor grade at the end of it.
He goes off topic of course material for 25-35 mins every lecture. He's rude in his emails replying to students when asking a simple question. overall quit lazy and does everything when convenient for herself and not others. 10/10 do not recommend him as a prof.
He purposely teaches bad and makes everything intentionally confusing during class, to weed students from the course and make people suffer on the midterm and final exam. Avoid if possible.
Explains concepts in a confusing and overcomplicated manner but only goes over easy practice questions that do not reflect the difficulty of those on the exams. Also, he is often rude when answering student's questions. Expect to teach yourself the course if you want to do good.
Super condescending, and very unhelpful during lectures. Relies EXTREMELY heavily on his own website notes to the point where most of her lecture is spent whining that nobody has read it, and tests are for irrelevant material one will never see again outside of the class. Has an endlessly long "email policy", and is super rude on emails.
I hate giving such a low review because usually there is some silver lining but I honestly learned more by skipping lectures and using the time to teach myself the concepts. He was very angry and not very much help. This is not helpful behavior, especially for a first-year course.
lectures were kinda useless and example questions didn't match exam difficulty. tutorial material is self-taught (but easy), and labs don't relate to lecture content. Hunt can seem rude over email/lectures, but is very helpful during office hours so go regularly (enough so that he knows your name) if you want an A! do lots of practice exams!!!
This guy's reputation (certainly not good) precedes himself. Not approachable in the slightest. Being someone who has never saw this material, he made me develop a hate towards it! If there is an option to avoid him for your mandatory organic chemistry credit, please do. You can thank me later.
Dr. Hunt has a very strong personality, his emails come across as very unprofessional and such tones wouldn't be tolerated if it were the other way around. This class was horrible, every time I go to it I hope I'll get hit by a bus so I'll be spared from the torturous hour I am about to endure.
He is not very approachable - I didn't want to go to him for help after not doing great on the midterm. But he is good at teaching. His notes are pretty well organized and understandable, but place more focus on doing the previous midterms/finals as the questions there are much more difficult than ones in class/tutorials.
everything he taught is useless, so different fromt he exam. Only learning from the previous exam pratice. Heavy workload for everything while is not related. The prof itself doesn't want you to be success, show no respect to student, even the course outline saying it
Grading criteria unclear, off topic lectures for entire class time, all material comes from his OChem website, and announcements are contradictory at times. Ian Hunt may be better suited to online classes only because I see no purpose in coming to class with the class structured as it is.
Dr.Hunt was not helpful and if you ask him a question Ian comes up with a smart remark instead of actually helping out, for a every day job he should come to it with a smile on his face at least but instead ruins your day. Ian should reconsider his career path as he is not caring or sympathetic towards any students
Very weird guy me and all my female friends felt at fear being in this guys classes give weird stares and stuff
Truly inspiring how Professor Hunt manages to turn even the most straightforward topics into an enigmatic labyrinth of confusion. The syllabus alone was a literary masterpiece like a puzzle wrapped in a riddle, soaked in mystery. Every lecture is an intellectual adventure where comprehension is optional and frustration is guaranteed.
He is the course coordinator, not my prof. Overall the most confusing assignments and syllabus that I've ever had in a course. Everything was full of errors and conflicting instructions. Issue is he doesn't even teach, only works through tough problems in lecture.
The course was EXTREMELY unorganized. He posted the rubrics so late, so you would have to work blindly on the assignments until you finally DO receive the rubrics and realize that you spent too much time on the wrong things. Changes things up at the last minute. assignments are changing days before due. Tests were NOTHING like what we learned.
I saw his bad reviews before going into this class and thought that maybe it's just because it's a difficult class, but no he just makes the difficult class even worse. His lectures are confusing because he is not good at explaining topics clearly. I learned more from the TA in labs and office hours than I did in any lectures.
Come to lab prepared and get a good lab group because assignments are due at the end of class. Pray you get a good TA and ask questions if they're nice! Assignments are extremely time-consuming, but BE AS DETAILED AS YOU CAN. TAs have a separate rubric.
Get ready to teach yourself everything! He doesn't respond quickly, is condescending, and expects you to already know everything. He asks too much of us and refuses to answer your questions directly. His tests almost never have anything to do with what he teaches. This class will drain you of your mental and emotional energy. Take anyone else!
This professor was the worst I've had at UC thus far. The entire course is self taught, and he is a man child who threw temper tantrums about low attendance despite not teaching during class while cursing at the students swearing he did not care if everyone failed and he would not curve. The only help he offered was to help students drop his class
Lectures were pretty boring and monotonous. Almost no one in class would pay attention and everyone went on their laptops, but attendance wasn't mandatory anyways. Exercises were a little difficult and assignments are a lot - he isn't a good instructor at all.
he has the skill of making a one hour lecture into two hours. And treats us like kindergarteners.
Dr. Hunt was an incredibly difficult man to learn from, his less than lacking lectures was complimented by his incredibly condescending emails. He is a smart man who knows his content but is just not suited to be an educator. The only thing that saved me was the lab (great TA, Ewan Gillard), tutorial practice, and past exams but not his teaching.
Tough course, unnecessarily harder than it needs to be, seemingly to weed students out. Having seen Ivy League o-chem exams, this was tougher. Hunt was often rude and unprofessional, throwing tantrums. Grading was inconsistent, with rotating markers penalizing different things. Exam averages were always around 60%, so maybe take it elsewhere.
I am currently taking this class online with in person labs and tutorials and it is by far the worst class I've ever taken. The entire course is located on three different websites one of which looks like it hasn't been updated since the 90s. The professor is extremely rude and assignment expectations are unclear and grades are basically arbitrary.
Quentin Tarantino probably took this course with Ian Hunt where he became so inspired by him that he created the character Hans Landa for Inglorious B word
Awful. Does not explain concepts well. Grading is strict but the curve is solid. He is supposedly an absolute genius, but he's losing her mind, there are numerous mistakes during lecture and even on exams (he forgot to remove an answer from below a question on the final).
Not funny to anyone. His lectures were very unclear and indigestible, and he brought with him a sense of intensity with all talk no action.
Dr. Hunt is great. He is available for office hours most of the time and provides great support. The format of lecture is strange but helpful. M in class office hours, W problem set, TH tutorial, F is quiz or midterm. All the lecture notes are provided online with videos which helps a lot.
Most poorly organized class I have ever taken. Does not care about the success of students whatsoever. Designs it so that everyone does poorly no matter what. He has made me hate chemistry.
We pay for 50 minute lectures yet our online videos are rarely ever that wrong. People in his in-person class are at a different pace than us. TAs cannot answer certain course questions. Overall, this course is very disorganized and you're better off taking elsewhere. Prof doesn't help and is really condescending, glazes over vital info.
dont take.
Very weirdly structured course... you have to teach yourself a bunch of concepts that are supposed to be taught by him. Labs are very stressful and the TAs don't seem to have consistent marking. Feels like he is purposely mean in emails and D2L discussions, and nice in office hours because he only feels respected when you ask questions to him irl.
He's not THAT bad. I actually found his lectures to be easy to digest and understand, and you really only need to learn nomenclature and some lab techniques (that you practice in-lab) outside of them. However, the course itself is pretty awfully organized, using like 4 different websites. He's not the greatest, but he isn't the worst either.
Dr. Hunt gets a bad rep due to appearing unapproachable and sounding snarky in his emails. I mustered up the courage to go to his office hours and he was amazing (+ dare I say, nice). He's extremely available and explains concepts so well. The more Dr. Hunt's exam questions annoy you, the more you should go annoy him by asking questions yourself.
He's very helpful outside of class
This class took any sparkle of light out of my eyes
Avoid at all costs. Hunt is a terrible prof and makes you spend over a hundred dollars extra on a useless textbook and mandatory online quizzes. Unclear exams and useless lectures where all he does is yap about nonsense.
He is honestly a genius when it comes to organic chemistry, he's a guy who's brutally honest when it comes to lectures and emails, absolute sweetheart in office hours though! Taking 353 with him too!
Cried myself to sleep every night.
